Audio Tour

In Rapid City, history isn’t just something you read about—it’s something you can reach out and touch. Embark on a presidential tour through downtown, where 43 life-sized bronze statues of America’s leaders tell stories of their defining moments. The City of Presidents Audio Tour is accessible via QR codes or a dial-in phone number at each statue. For an even more interactive experience, stop by the Rapid City Visitor Center at 613 Main Street for a printed guide and scavenger hunt. Complete the challenge and earn a presidential prize!

The City of Presidents began in 2000 when the first four presidents – George Washington, John Adams, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush – were placed. The presidential statues are privately funded, made by a group of local artists and are gifted to the city upon completion. As a trail of history, new additions are placed only after a president is no longer eligible for or seeking the office.

Local Q&A

With Joshua Muir, National Travel & Tourism Week Photo Contest Winner.

Q: What’s your favorite Rapid City attraction and why?

A: Bear Country USA is my favorite attraction in the area. It’s a really unique experience to be able to drive so close to the wildlife. Bonus point for going in the spring to see all of the bear cubs playing.

Q: What would you recommend as a must-do for someone visiting?

A: I would say Custer State Park is a must do item. It’s very accommodating as there are many good sites and chances to see wildlife just from driving around the park. For those who want to be more active there are also some great hikes.

WINNING PHOTO

About The Contest

Every year, the United States celebrates National Travel & Tourism Week to recognize the value travel holds for our economy and personal well-being. Visit Rapid City holds an annual photo contest in recognition of this week to explore the beauty of the area through the eyes of visitors and local residents. The contest winner receives a downtown gift card to use during their trip, local goodies and a feature in our Visitor Guide.

Q: Do you have any tips for planning a Rapid City and Black Hills vacation?

A: Try to find some food trucks. Most breweries and some parks will have food trucks there almost every day.

Q: What is your favorite part of Rapid City?

A: Even though it’s a city, Rapid is very close to some of the darkest skies in the country. Just a short drive to the Badlands will get you a great seat to see the milky way or watch a meteor shower.

Q: What would you say is the ideal length of stay in Rapid City?

A: One week should give you enough time to not feel rushed but also still be able to see all of the major attractions around the city.

Q: Is there anything you want people to know about your winning photo?

A: If there’s ever a chance to see the Northern Lights, look for dark sky zones such as the Badlands. It’s definitely a bucket list item worth making a little effort to see.

Some think of Prairie Edge as a Native American art gallery; others see us as an authentic trading post reminiscent of days gone by, but everyone who visits us leaves with the same thing — an experience that lasts forever. Ray Hillenbrand established the Prairie Edge concept in the early 1980s with two primary purposes: First, to educate the public about and preserve the heritage and culture of the Northern Plains Indians. Second, to provide Northern Plains Indian artists an outlet for their finest work (at a fair price to them). Located on the corner of 6th Street and Main in downtown Rapid City, Prairie Edge stands two stories high and stretches out for half a block. The brick, wood, and glass storefront has been restored to its original 19th century glory. Inside, the hardwood floors and polished cabinetry bring to mind the spirit of the Old West, while the distinct smell of sage and sweetgrass as well as the soft sound of a Lakota flute evoke the mystique of the Great Plains Indian.

CONNECT WITH THE SPIRIT OF GENERATIONS AND MAKE TIME AND SPACE TO EXPERIENCE THE LIVING STORY OF THE LAKOTA, DAKOTA, AND NAKOTA PEOPLES.

Ancestors of Native American tribes deeply rooted in Paha Sapa (Black Hills) consider this land to be the center of the universe. Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota customs emphasize the importance of balance in the distinct natural landscapes of this area. During your visit, you can learn and appreciate the lifeways, stories, arts, and traditions of indigenous peoples in Rapid City and the surrounding area.

While hiking Mato Paha (Bear Butte) , you may see pieces of colorful cloth tied to trees along trails. These prayer offerings are intentionally left behind and should not be disturbed.

When visiting Wasun Niya (Wind Cave) , you can read or listen to the emergence story of the Oglala Lakota tribe at the Visitor Center to understand how Lakota people were brought into existence on earth.

Summits seen in the distance join the earth and sky – reflecting the spiritual power of sacred places like Hinhan Kaga Paha (Black Elk Peak) . This mountain is the tallest point east of the Rocky Mountains, and is named after Black Elk, an Oglala Lakota medicine man who was present at the Wounded Knee Massacre and respected as a visionary.

The Journey Museum takes its guests through the entire story of Rapid City — from prehistory to today. The Journey houses some of the best artifacts in the area and really gives you the opportunity to see firsthand the beauty and impressive nature of the people who have long called this area home. This stop is great for families — The Journey is as interactive and engaging as it is fascinating.

Discover the finest selections of Native American art, crafts, beadwork, and more in Downtown Rapid City. Meet Del Iron Cloud (pictured here) – a talented acrylic and watercolor artist who creates vivid Native American scenes. Del has a small studio inside Prairie Edge Trading Co. & Galleries. This locally owned store started with two purposes: to educate the public and preserve the heritage and culture of the Northern Plains Indians, and to provide Northern Plains Indian artists an outlet for their artwork. The store often hosts artists on site to demonstrate their creative process and meet visitors in person.

Make sure to stop into Dakota Drum Company and watch Lakota artist Sonja Holy Eagle as she paints traditional buffalo hide drums in her own unique style.

Another comprehensive way to learn about Native American history in South Dakota is with a visit to Crazy Horse Memorial®. Only a 50 minute drive from Rapid City, this ongoing mountain carving of the great Lakota warrior is not only a tribute to the Lakota people, but to tribes everywhere. Explore the grounds to tour places like The Indian Museum of North America®, which showcases authentic items donated from Native Americans all over the United States and Canada.

S outh Dakota Iconic SD Dishes and Top Spots to Experience Them Savoring

From the mouthwatering Chicago deep dish pizza to the hearty Massachusetts clam chowder, every state boasts its iconic dishes – and South Dakota is no different. Here are a few of our state specialties and local Rapid City restaurants where you can find them!

*Many Rapid City restaurants rotate menus and specials seasonally so be sure to check their website first.

One of the most iconic and probably the highest recommended foods in South Dakota is Chislic. This cubed red meat, typically beef or lamb, is deep-fried or grilled and served with a tasty dipping sauce. Simple, yet utterly delicious. Here’s where you can get a taste: Dakotah Steakhouse, Murphy’s Pub & Grill, Bokujo Ramen, Thirsty’s, Paddy O’Neill’s Irish Pub & Grill, and The Park.

Walleye, the official state fish of South Dakota, may not be a familiar choice for some. It’s a freshwater fish known for its mild, slightly sweet flavor with low levels of fishiness. Local restaurants in South Dakota have perfected their walleye dishes to provide a unique culinary experience. Treat yourself to the best walleye around at one of these locations: Dakotah Steakhouse, The Park, Colonial House, Shipwrecks, and Paddy O’Neill’s.

Fry Bread Walleye

Fry Bread is a traditional Native American bread made by frying a dough mixture of flour, water, and salt until golden brown and puffy. This versatile bread can be enjoyed on its own, sprinkled with powdered sugar or honey, or used as a base for toppings like chili, beans, or cheese to create a flavorful dish known as an “Indian taco.” You can try fry bread at Thirsty’s.

Bison

Bison is leaner and more tender than beef with a delicious, slightly sweeter, flavor but not “gamey.” You can find this meat uniquely incorporated into many dishes around town: Tally’s Silver Spoon, Dakotah Steakhouse, Colonial House, Bokujo Ramen, Murphy’s Pub and Grill, Firehouse Brewing Co., Bashful Bison, Delmonico Grill, The Wine Cellar, Enigma, and Thirsty’s.

Pronounced as “koo-ken”, this is actually South Dakota’s state dessert. Kuchen is German for “cake” but that’s not all it is. This heavenly mixture of cake, pie, creamy custard, and often fruit is a spoonful of melt-in-yourmouth goodness. Get your hands on it at one of these locations: Dakotah Steakhouse and Fork Real Café.

You can find a variety of vegetarian options as well.
