Or perhaps the verdant Ulko-Tammio, the sandy beaches of Kaunissaari or the effortless Varissaari? Sail to the archipelago and fall in love with the atmosphere!

Distance from Helsinki
Come on a voyage of discovery to the mystically wistful archipelago of the Eastern Coast. The Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park comprises over a hundred islands and skerries, where you can feel nature’s embrace on the shores and in the forests, surrounded by the open sea.
Venture from the East Coast harbours into the archipelago with your own boat or on board the archipelago transport. See idyllic fishing villages, fish huts, birdwatching towers, coastal meadows, beacons and rocky islets. Soak in the archipelago atmosphere, let your gaze wander across the wind-swept skerries, where ruggedness meets beauty, and the dramatic turns of history live in harmony with romance.
Spot migratory birds, ringed seals and the other diverse wildlife of the archipelago. Bask on Kaunissaari’s long sandy beaches and enjoy the atmosphere of Tammio along village paths lined with lilac bushes, with the song of swallows in your ears.
Take a day trip to Suomenlinna’s counterpart, the Svartholma fortress, sail aboard the traditional sailing ship Österstjernan in the Loviisa archipelago or take the M/V Nestor to the lighthouse island of Orrengrund. See Rakinkotka, the island of the vikings, and hear the wartime stories of Rankki, known from the silver screen. Fall in love with the authentic Haapasaari and smallest cooperative store in Finland. Find stillness and switch off your phone amidst the seascape, greenery and rich history of Ulko-Tammio.
Make the most of summer in Kaunissaari, for since the 1950s, the summer paradise of Pyhtää’s Kaunissaari has attracted sunseekers and sea adventurers to enjoy the archipelago atmosphere. The long sandy beaches, peaceful pine forests and picturesque fishing village of Kaunissaari are sure to charm anyone who visits with flying colours.
Hike through the island’s beautiful nature and take a dip in the sparkling sea. Dine and stay overnight at the Kaunissaaren Maja or in the holiday cottages of the island. Try the Maja’s legendary fish soup and Cafe Mustikka’s local delicacies. At Cafe Mustikka (=Blueberry), you’ll hear Finnish top artists perform on summer Saturdays and during the Blueberry Day festival in July. At the Maja’s karaoke nights, you can let your inner performer shine with a
seascape backdrop.
At the Maja, you will sleep in a traditional cabin or a luxury apartment, with an uninterrupted sea view from the terrace, as well as from the sauna and the hot tub.
The island is at its busiest during the summer months, but if you come in May or September, you’ll easily find a quiet jetty for peaceful archipelago ambience – and you might even spot local herons or otters. It is worth booking several nights’ stay at once, because the charm of Kaunissaari is irresistible.
Kaunissaari is accessible by ferry from Kuusinen harbour in Kotka, by water taxi from Kotka Sapokka or on cruises run by local entrepreneurs. The traditional sailing ship Österstjernan also sails to Kaunissaari from the Loviisa Laivasilta from time to time.

On the way, admire the open sea views and the stunning islets sculpted by waves and wind. Once in Tammio, you’ll experience the authentic atmosphere of a fishing village as you wander between boathouses and timber buildings.
Located in the open sea, Tammio has been inhabited since the mid-1500s and fishing continued there until the 1950s. Stop by the island’s museum to learn about its history, and visit the adjacent village hall built in 1891 to hunt for second-hand treasures at the flea market and take in the nostalgic atmosphere.
In Tammio, you will relax by the sea and enjoy the summer archipelago. Bring along a picnic basket and soak up the sun on the coastal rocks.
Not even a mobile phone disturbs the peace of Ulko-Tammio. On the world’s first phone-free island, it feels as though you’ve stepped into a jungle. This stunning, uninhabited island in the outer archipelago is home to rare birds and plants. Its beautiful and lush nature, combined with rugged coastal rocks, leaves a lasting impression.
Hike along well-marked nature trails through green forests, over bare rocky outcrops and through a wartime cave.
Sit on a wind-beaten bench atop a cliff in the south-easternmost corner of Finland and take in the deep blue seascape and calm horizon. Climb the birdwatching tower and grill your packed lunch at the campfire spot. It would be no surprise if you found yourself returning to Ulko-Tammio again. You can reach Ulko-Tammio on a Meriset cruise from Kotka’s Sapokka harbour or by private transport.
Rankki, one of the Eastern Gulf of Finland’s most fascinating islands, served as the main filming location for the movie “Summer Book”, starring Hollywood actress Glenn Close. The filming sites of the movie, which is based on Tove Jansson’s novel, are among the island’s highlights, but there is much more to discover. Hop on the ferry from Kotka’s Kuusinen harbour and set off for an excursion
to the diverse and scenic island of Rankki, where every corner holds a story.
Bask in the sun on smooth coastal rocks, admire the charming old stone daymark, explore the gun bunker of this former military island and the tsar-era wooden barracks, and follow the island’s nature trails. Rugged Rankki captivates both everyday
Would you prefer a romantic picnic while watching the sunset or a joyful day of splashing around on a sauna raft, followed by terrace vibes and the generous delicacies of Restaurant Vaakku, all with nearly 360-degree sea views? Just off the coast of Kotka, Varissaari is a firm local favourite for both of these options, with boats departing every hour and the journey taking only 15 minutes.
Walk the island’s nature trail and explore the island’s history at the Svensksund Pavilion. Once known as Fort Elisabeth, Varissaari, together with the nearby Kukouri (Fort Slava), protected the fortress town of Svensksund, located on Kotkansaari. Some of the structures and walls were destroyed as early as the Crimean War, but in recent years, the ramparts have been restored.

Varissaari is indeed a unique blend of history and relaxed summer spirit, as it is also the perfect place to enjoy paddleboarding, beach volleyball and barbecuing in scenic surroundings.
If you’re looking for something truly unique, bring your picnic basket and take a water taxi from Kotka´s Sapokka harbour and on the one-ofa-kind fortress island of Fort Slava, also known as Kukouri. This tiny island barely fits within itself the ruins of a circular fortress, built in 1794 to defend Svensksund fortress, which was located on Kotkansaari Island. There’s also a narrow stretch of sandy beach and breathtaking views over the Eastern Gulf of Finland archipelago. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more perfect spot for a romantic picnic with sparkling drinks and strawberries.
Discover Svartholma, the sea fortress that once guarded Loviisa
Let the sea breeze and gentle rays of sunshine seduce you to a sea trip to Svartholma, the sister fortress of Suomenlinna, just off the coast of Loviisa! Admire the restored sea fortress, walls of which once kept watch for approaching enemies on the horizon and the tunnels offered shelter in times of threat.
Enjoy a meal at the island’s restaurant and hop on the waterbus back to Laivasilta for the evening. Or stay overnight on the waves of Loviisalahti at the 70-berth guest marina if you’re travelling with your own boat. Day visitors often combine their sea voyage with the harbour atmosphere of Loviisa’s Laivasilta, swimming and waffle breaks at Plagen beach, boutique shopping in the charming alleys of the wooden town and summer vibes at the delightful Loviisa Camping, where you can spend the night in the cosy Willa Björksten or a ready-pitched tent complete with private terrace and sea view.

Not absolutely anyone is allowed to dock at Orrengrund’s harbour, but now you can reach the cliffs of Orrengrund aboard M/V Nestor and enjoy a picnic in the waters of Loviisa at this historic island.
On this cruise, which makes a stop in Kaunissaari, you will also enjoy a local whitefish meal and have the chance to grill your own food along the way.

While walking along Hamina’s historic streets, it is easy to imagine the sound of hooves and the rattle of carriages.
You can see a lot in Hamina by walking. Explore the hiding places of the starshaped fortress town’s ramparts, pop into the Ruutikellari (Gunpowder Cellar) Gallery and admire the charming, worldclass small town from the fortress trail. Despite its over 400-year history, the Malmgård estate is primarily a working farm, producing Finland’s tastiest heritage grain flours and risotto grains, as well as award-winning beers from its own grains. Drop by the manor shop before you leave – you won’t be disappointed!
Take a weekend trip to one of Finland’s best-preserved ironworks villages. You’ll be amazed by how charming it is, how much there is to see and do, and how the legacy of the iron lady, Virginia af Forselles, still breathes through the red riverside buildings along the Kymi River.
Founded in the 1600s, Strömfors Ironworks is one of the oldest in Finland. The rapids of the Kymi River provided water power, and the surrounding forests supplied raw material. The unique setting has remained largely unchanged to this day.
Life in the ironworks village continues today in its centuries-old setting, with respect for old traditions visible in the handiwork of local artisans. In the blacksmith’s workshop, you can watch iron being forged with the only water hammer in Finland, and in the loft of the adjacent stable, you can pause to experience the atmosphere of art. In the village’s Ruotsinpyhtää Church, you can marvel at the altarpiece painted by Helene Schjerfbeck, the only altarpiece ever made by our internationally renowned artist. In the small shops, you’ll find lovely souvenirs and charming interior decorations.
The most energetic ones may set off from the ironworks on the Kukuljärvi hiking trail or rent paddling equipment and head into the maze of Finnish Amazon. It’s worth staying for several days to have time for both!
In addition to history, at the ironworks, you can enjoy go-karting, escape rooms, pampering treatments and a swim from the cute beach into the cooling embrace of the river.
On your journey through the Loviisa countryside, stop and experience the charming 1950s atmosphere at Finland’s smallest shop museum, tucked away on the edge of the fields in the village of Skinnarby. Olavi Virta croons from the radio, and the shelves are filled with colourful tins and jars competing for space. Few environments offer a more unique and exhilarating paddling experience than Strömfors Ironworks and the western branch of the Kymi river, often called Finland’s Amazon. In many areas, the Kymi river remains in its natural state, forming an astonishingly
beautiful network of paddling routes along which you will pause at numerous wilderness islands and may customise your route with endless new options. Many of our routes either start or finish amid the picturesque scenery of the ironworks and all the equipment and

Kymi river and the Eastern Gulf of Finland offer Southern Finland’s best fishing hotspots. Here you can enjoy sea excursions, the roar of the rapids and tranquil river estuaries.
Salmon from the Kymi river were a sought-after delicacy at both the Swedish and Russian courts. And it is no wonder, since the Kymi river is southern Finland’s most significant salmon river, where anglers enjoy plentiful catches, peace and quiet, and excellent services. The river’s numerous branches offer a great deal of choice. The Korkeakoskenhaara branch is deep and fast-flowing, whereas the Langinkoskenhaara brach is a favourite among fly fishers.
The biggest salmon ever caught in the Kymi River weighs 35.6 kilos.
The Eastern Coast is also a paradise for sea anglers. From sheltered bays you can catch zander and pike, and from the breakers around the outer skerries you can hook sea trout. The open sea, meanwhile, is an excellent venue for trolling salmon. The best fishing spots are in the outer archipelago, where the wide expanse of sea beckons. On your fishing trip, pause at Kaunissaari or Tammio islands to soak up the atmosphere of an authentic fishing village. Book a guided fishing excursion with the East Coast’s experienced fishing guides.
At Lohilaani in Kotka, you can net salmon and sea trout from Siikakoski or fish for rainbow trout in a guaranteed fishing pool.
