Joie de vivre, vibrancy, cultural diversity: these are all words that apply to Karlsruhe, a fan-shaped baroque city established by Margrave Karl Wilhelm in 1715, now home to more than 300,000 people and the second largest metropolis in BadenWürttemberg. Karlsruhe is considered the gateway to the Black Forest and its location on the Upper Rhine makes it one of the sunniest regions in Germany. So the climate is pleasant, but what about the lifestyle? It’s not bad either: there is the Badisches Landesmuseum (Baden State Museum) in the palace, the Staatliche Kunsthalle (State Art Gallery) and the Natural History Museum with its fascinating vivarium. Not to mention the outstanding Center for Art and Media (ZKM), Germany’s very own Centre Pompidou, which, despite its recency, ranks fourth among art institutions in the latest Artfacts ranking. And this worldwide. Wow!
What’s missing? Green spaces? Hardly. Karlsruhe’s zoo, which doubles as a city garden, is one of the largest gardens in Germany, while the forests and the rare plants in the palace gardens are simply spectacular. Which can also be said of the much-praised Baden cuisine: the fact that Karlsruhe’s chefs consistently achieve the highest culinary standards is common knowledge, as is the fact that they almost exclusively use regional products for their creations. International standards with local ingredients, that’s definitely a winning combination.

Art in all its media forms is right at home in Karlsruhe. Video, painting, dance, audio or IT – in a city that has traditionally valued its cultural diversity, all these different cultures come together in numerous events to create an experience that is unique in Germany.
Just as Karlsruhe is the only German city to bear the UNESCO title as creative city of media arts. Be it southern Germany’s largest screen at the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival, the fourth most important cultural institution in the world, namely ZKM l Centre for Art and Media or media installations in the city centre.
H
ermann Billing. Robert Curjel. Karl Coelestin Moser. Not everyone in Karlsruhe may be familiar with these names. However, the many magnificent art nouveau edifices constructed by these three architects are most certainly well-known far and wide. They helped transform Karlsruhe into one of the beacons of architecture in the south-west of Germany at the turn of the 20th century. In their buildings, it made no difference to them whether they were commercial or private buildings, even before prestigious urban projects such as the Krautkopfbrunnen fountain on Gutenbergplatz (1905), they did not resort to any common, traditional fountain types when designing the fountain, but instead pursued a highly individualised artistic solution to the task. Fortunately for the city. The elegant interplay of geometric and botanical ornamental features has left the city with striking witnesses of times gone by.
The many art nouveau facades in the Oststadt district and the August Billings villa district in Baichstrasse in Karlsruhe are a beauty to behold. A typical feature of Karlsruhe art nouveau is the combination of natural stone and contrasting rendered surfaces in orange and mustard yellow, some of them embellished with timber frames and shingles, adding to the overall charm of the façades.
Beautiful and ecological: Visitors travelling by train will immediately see Karlsruhe at its best when they arrive at the art nouveau train station built by August Stürzenacker in 1913.

… and the Black Forest meets urbanism.
Karlsruhe is the latest addition to the Central/North Black Forest Nature Park, Germany’s largest natural park with hiking and adventure trails, forest playgrounds and mountain bike trails right on the doorstep of the vibrant Baden city.
Karlsruhe Rittnert tour
Just a few minutes’ drive from Karlsruhe, the districts of Grünwettersbach, Hohenwettersbach, Palmbach, Stupferich and Wolfartsweier invite visitors to cycle, hike, walk and relax in magnificent forests featuring rare plants and orchards with idyllic views over the Rhine plain.
The ‘WaldWelt’ educational forest trail between Durlach and Hohenwettersbach has 17 stations, where the mascot Diane Dachs amusingly helps to recount interesting facts about water, badgers and fallow deer. A particular highlight is the ‘WaldGugg’ station with its swinging lounger, giving you an entirely new view over chic Durlach. The ‘WaldLausch’ station reminds us of all the things we can hear in the forest if we strain our ears and listen to nature’s soundtrack. While at Oberwald Zoo, antelopes, elks and horses roam happily and freely around the forest. Small tip: Spieloase and Oberwaldsee are easily accessible by bike.
An aural experience: each of the seven stations along Durlach’s dialect poetry trail around the Turmberg features poets from the region. You can listen to these using the Blukii app or try reciting the texts yourself.
In the beginning was the castle. Karl Wilhelm Margrave of Baden built his town around it, starting from the castle - that looks like a huge fan from above. Didn't you know? And did you know that the first e-mail in Germany was received in the “fan-shaped city” of Karlsruhe? Then it's high time you took one of the many opportunities to get to know Karlsruhe better on a guided tour.

So little time, so much to see. The early bird gets to experience the real Karlsruhe and make a few discoveries along the way. It’s best to leave the car at home as most of the attractions are within walking distance.
8.30 a.m.
Karlsruhe’s weekly markets are calling. The market on Gutenbergplatz is the preferred haunt of foragers and foodies alike, especially on Saturdays. It’s been around for more than a century.
10 a.m.
You have to climb up to look down. But the view of Karlsruhe’s fan shape from the 42-metre-high Schlossturm tower is well worth the effort. Follow this with a visit to the Badisches Landesmuseum where you can view the world-famous Türkenbeute (Turkish spoils of war) collection dating back to the 17th century.
TIP Enjoy a restorative coffee while seated comfortably in the former margravial conservatory
11.30 a.m.
A visit to the botanical garden next door to the palace is definitely a must. Exotic trees and conservatories filled with cacti and tropical plants right in the heart of the city are a great pick-me-up for nature lovers.
1 p.m.
It’s lunchtime! The Cantina Majolika serves international and regional dishes of the finest quality. What’s more, just getting there is a pleasure in itself. The path is marked with pretty ceramic tiles that guide you to the Cantina through the palace gardens.
A cultural highlight awaits you at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM), an interactive media museum also known as Germany’s very own Centre Pompidou. If you have bored teenagers or a partner with a fear of museums in tow, you can easily park them at the games section of the ZKM.
What’s a city break without a proper shopping spree? Karlsruhe has three places that qualify as a shopper’s paradise: the ETTLINGER TOR, the POSTGALERIE and Kaiserstrasse, Baden’s longest high street, could very well cause you to max out your credit card. But the city’s side streets and alleyways are also home to many quaint shops selling quirky fashion and a variety of curios.
The long day is taking its toll and the lunchtime delights at the Cantina Majolika are but a distant memory. Your stomach growls in anticipation so you head to Ludwigsplatz, to one of the many excellent restaurants, bars and cafés that line the square. What to choose!

The Karlsruhe Palace was built between 1715 and 1718. For almost 200 years it was the residence and seat of the government of the Margrave, and then the Grand Dukes of Baden. Today the Palace houses the Baden State Museum. From the palace tower there is a fascinating view of the layout of Karlsruhe – „the fan-shaped city“
The Town Hall was completed in 1825 using plans drawn up by the city architect Friedrich Weinbrenner. A statue of Mercury, the symbol for trade and commerce, graces the top of the town hall tower. The centre of the building features a pillared loggia. There is also a Glockenspiel here, dating from 1981. Inside the town hall a miniature version of the first automobile by inventor Carl Benz as well as a model from the inventor of the dandy horse, Baron Karl von Drais can be seen.
The Market Square with its pyramid, developed by the famous Karlsruhe municipal architect Friedrich Weinbrenner is probably the most well-known place in Karlsruhe and more or less forms the city centre. Here, there is also the city landmark, the pyramid which was built in 1823. Underneath is the crypt of the „Konkordienkirche“, which was demolished in 1807. It is here that the city‘s founder and namesake, Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach is buried. In addition, the municipal Protestant church and the Town Hall are also located here.
Ständehaus memorial
The Karlsruhe Ständehaus was the first separate new Parliament building in Germany and represents 200 years of parliamentary history in Baden. It is rightfully considered to be a pioneer of democracy in Germany. The „Ständehaus memorial“ has been a reminder of this tradition since 1993.
In Karlsruhe, there’s no way that you can avoid Friedrich Weinbrenner, one of the city’s most important architects. The Protestant church was also built to his plans between 1807 and 1816. Its defining features are the six Corinthian columns in the vestibule and the gilded angel atop the spire.
The Grand Duke‘s Burial Chapel is atmospherically situated in the middle of the Hardtwald forest. It is the only royal building of that period in Baden to survive the Second World War undamaged. The crypt in the basement of the chapel is well worth seeing with its original stained-glass windows adorned with plant motifs.
TIP It is worth taking a look at the crypt. There are almost always interesting exhibitions there.
“All the way to Karlsruhe,” isn’t just something sturdy hikers from Baden say. It is often used in the context of Germany’s highest legal institutions: the Federal Constitutional Court, the Federal Court of Justice and the Office of the Federal Public Prosecutor General. Without these pillars of German democracy located between the Schlossplatz and the botanical garden, the modern constitutional state as we know it would be inconceivable.
Prinz-Max-Palais
This neo-Renaissance jewel in the crown designed by Josef Durms is a veritable cultural and historical chameleon. It was a palace for Baden’s aristocracy, the residence of the last imperial Chancellor of the Reich, the seat of the Federal Constitutional Court and also an unpretentious university building. Today it houses the Stadtmuseum (city museum) Karlsruhe and a children and youth library.
Platz der Grundrechte
„Platz der Grundrechte“ (The square of fundamental rights) was laid down as a gift from the city of Karlsruhe to the Federal Constitutional Court in 2005. Here there are 24 double-sided signs, which deal with the topics of law and injustice – with statements from judges, lawyers and citizens who have come into conflict with the law.
Badisches Landesmuseum at the Karlsruhe Palace
The Baden State Museum is a major cultural history museum in Baden-Württemberg and one of the most active museums in Germany. With its internationally significant collections, the museum displays the art and living environments of prehistoric times and early history through antiquity to the 21st century in different museums. Creative park „Alter Schlachthof“ (Old slaughterhouse)
Where do you find the young creatives in Karlsruhe? At the Alter Schlachthof of course. Over the years, as befits a repurposed smart industrial building where only names like Alte Hackerei (old abattoir) and Fettschmelze (fat rendering) recall its former purpose, it has become a meeting place for a creative crowd of artists. The Alter Schlachthof is home to studio communities, traditional artisans and artists, architects, new media agencies and Filmboard Karlsruhe, creating a space that fosters mutual inspiration. It has developed into a vibrant district in the east of Karlsruhe with thriving eateries, needless to say.
The permanent exhibitions show native and exotic animal worlds, rocks, minerals and fossils and convey the formation of the earth and the diversity of life. Changing special exhibitions complete the offer. Highlights include live animals in near-natural aquariums and terrariums, including tropical fish and Germany's largest living coral reef with reef shark Karla. The museum brings the natural sciences to life for the whole family.

The Hallenbau - the cultural quarter in Karlsruhe Karlsruhe’s new cultural quarter brings together ZKM l Centre for Art and Media, Staatliche Kunsthalle, Städtische Galerie and the Hochschule für Gestaltung under one roof. This is where research, teaching and over 600 years of art meet: from old masters, through modern art, to contemporary art, sculpture and media installations. The building was constructed in 1915 and its characteristic atriums create ideal spaces for exhibitions and events combining art, media and science.
Although this is where all media and art genres come together into a harmonic whole, the scope of the ZKM is not only to host a wide range of exhibitions. Indeed, one of its top priorities is to create the ideal conditions for the creation of art. This is why scientific research, development and work is carried out in the Hertz laboratory. In the words of Karl Valentin: “Art is beautiful, but it’s a lot of work.” The ZKM is by far more than just a museum, it is an art centre, a meeting place and a future laboratory.

Do you think the former mayor of Karlsruhe likes his nickname? In the local vernacular, the indubitably delightful green space between the districts of Südweststadt and Grünwinkel named after him is called ‘Klotze’ (klutz). This ideal urban recreational area couldn’t be more different: the Alb river flows through it and it boasts generous play and sunbathing areas and even a little lake where you can hire a boat.

OLD TOWN CHARM AND VIEWS TO DIE FOR
Medieval flair has left its stamp on the old town of Durlach with its picturesque market square, town walls, castle and the narrow streets and old walls. Small cafes and restaurants await you. With over 30,000 inhabitants, Durlach is the largest district in Karlsruhe and is referred to as the „mother“ of Karlsruhe.
Karlsburg Castle - former residence of the margraves
Karlsburg Castle once stood in the centre of Durlach. Today only part of the first residence of Margrave Karl Wilhelm II remains. The Pfinzgau Museum located in the baroque Karlsburg shows everything worth knowing about Durlach, from its foundation to the present day. With artistic, cultural and social history exhibits, the Carpathian German Museum is dedicated to the culture of the Sudeten Germans from Slovakia.
Turmberg with viewing terrace
256 metres have to be climbed to reach the Durlach's local mountain (also its landmark). To enjoy the magnificent view over Karlsruhe, visitors can climb the 529 steps of the 'Hexenstäffele'. The area also offers several scenic walking trails, a large playground, and a forest rope park.
