IWRA Regional May 2022 Proposal to host the IWRA Regioanl Water Congress in the Faroe Islands Suggested date: 17.-19. May 2022

Welcome to Faroe Islands

Welcome to the Faroe Islands In the heart of the North-East Atlantic Ocean - where the warm Gulf Stream and the cold Arctic currents meet - lie the Faroe Islands. Eighteen wild islands rising from the heaving and roaring ocean. Sculpted by the forces of nature. With open waters on all sides, there is nothing to deter or slow down these currents. The steady stream of strong ocean currents that flow across the ridges and banks prevent the accumulation of pollutants, making the waters around the Faroe Islands one of the cleanest marine environments on the planet.

Welcome to Faroe Islands

Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands

GOVERNMENT OF THE FAROE ISLANDS Dear guest, Welcome to the Faroe Islands. I am delighted that you are here. These 18 rocks in the North Atlantic have a lot to offer. It’s a good place to take some time out of your regular routine. To make this your place of work, even for just a short while. To slow down. The Faroe Islands are geographically remote. But we think we are right where we should be. The natural conditions make their mark on a culture. Volatile weather, natural disasters, unsteady agriculture, precarious fishery and disease, including the current pandemic. It’s what makes us who we are. Isolation has it’s benefits. It’s what makes islanders patient, hard-working and dependable. It’s also what makes us able to offer you a unique and inspirational setting for your undertaking. This is a quiet place – ideal for concentrating on a specific task. But despite the tranquility, we also know how to have a good time and we know how to satisfy the needs of the most seasoned adventurer. Please enjoy your visit. Best wishes,

Bárður á Steig Nielsen Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands

Welcome to Faroe Islands

Welcome to the city of Tórshavn

TÓRSHAVNAR KOMMUNA When I look at the City of Tórshavn from my kitchen window, I see a capital in rapid development – a place that has taught entrepreneurs and managers alike to appreciate an outlet not commonly seen. Like the colourful houses around the capital, I can see a pattern in the stories that visitors from abroad tell me. People tend to mention not only a vibrant atmosphere when doing business in Tórshavn but also the unique combination of progress and calmness. The close-to-nature environment will most likely inspire new ideas to flourish and at the same time brace the mind to unwind for a few days. A foreign friend of mine once asked me how come Tórshavn can be such a modern city with its remote geographical location in the middle of the untouched North Atlantic Ocean. I answered him quite simple: It all comes back to believing in yourself, having a crystal-clear focus, and insisting on doing what has been seen not possible. When you thrive on achieving more than can be expected, things will change. And things they change when you explore your business in the heart of the world’s most talked about travel destination. This is how businesses grow and this is how our city has developed and will develop. So feel free to push the agenda of your business in a capital that most certainly will make your company and its people take the next important steps.

Heðin Mortensen Major of Tórshavn

Welcome to Faroe Islands

Welcome to the Faroe Islands

We at Visit Faroe Islands and Visit Tórshavn together with the local host committee welcome the IWRA Regional Conference to the Faroe Islands. Our wish is that the event will have a lasting footprint in our destination, where authorities and citizens become more aware of the value of a resource that seems abundant to us – water. That we in the future get the most out of this plentiful for us yet highly valuable and scarce resource.

Visit Faroe Islands and Visit Tórshavn are the official coordinators of MICE related activities and work with a large network of suppliers. Do not hesitate to send us an email or give us a call if you have any questions concerning meetings and conferences in the Faroe Islands. The Safe to Visit stamp is Faroe Islands official Covid-19 Safe to Visit guidelines applied to all venues proposed in this proposal.

Welcome to Faroe Islands

Jarðfeingi – Faroese Geological Survey

Local Hosts The Faroese Geological Survey (Jarðfeingi) is an institution under the Ministry of Environment, Industry and Trade. Jarðfeingi’s purpose is to administer, research, consult and teach about oil, energy and geological nature values. The goal with hosting the regional Water Conference in the Faroe Islands is to inform about water in general. To show all the possibilities that are in water, and ultimately to show the true value of water as a source for energy and health. How can we care for, preserve and recycle water in the most sensible way.

Fee to IWRA: EUR 20,000

Welcome to Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands There are 18 beautiful islands in the Faroe Islands. Most of the islands are connected with bridges, ferries or sub-sea tunnels – in 2023 90% of the inhabitants will be connected through one network of roads. This gives the delegates the possibility to live and attend the conference in the capital whilst traveling to the different islands and have unique nature experiences through a modern and efficient infrastructure. In fact, to get from Tórshavn to the northernmost point only takes one hour and 15 minutes in a bus.

Conference Information

Public awareness One of the main goals with hosting the Regional Water Conference in the Faroe Islands is to teach the public about the true value of water as a natural resource. The Faroe Islands is very rich when it comes to water compared to other places, but we do not always make the best use of it. By caring for, preserving and recycling water, the Faroe Islands could increase the value of water. To increase the local awareness, we suggest organising open sessions for the public.

Speakers Corner: Traditionally, throughout the history of time up until today, the square outside the Parliament has been used for public speeches and debates. An open speakers corner where everyone is welcome to speak and debate the topic of water.

Policy Day: A policy day with guests from the industry and politicians participating in panel discussions. The panel discussions will be open for the public to attend, and will run in parallel with the other sessions.

Conference Information

Suggestions to field trips

Kirvi: Bottled water For decades the people of Faroe Islands have travelled to the village of Lopra and the volcanic Kirvi mountain range in the island of Suðuroy to sample the heavenly water that flows there. Kirvi is naturally sourced spring water which is channelled to the factory through gravity. This makes it one of the most environmentally friendly bottled water available.

SEV: Hydroelectric power plants The first hydroelectric power plant in the Faroe Islands was built in Botni on the island of Suðuroy in 1921. Many of the iconic yellow power plants are still in operation by the national power supplier SEV.

Leading aquaculture The Faroe Islands are world leaders when it comes to premium, sustainable production of salmon. A visit to Bakkafrost or Hiddenfjord to understand the importance water in their entire supply chain.

A reception that will welcome your conference guests into the proud fishing traditions of the Faroe Islands Overlooking the iconic harbour in the centre of Tórshavn called Vágsbotn, Mullers Pakkhús was built in the 1890s as a supply base during the times of smack fishing. In the attic they would repair the sails; on the ground level, each smack would have its own storage room; and the salt was stored in the cellar.
