The development of Idrija began with the discovery of mercury in 1490, which is even before the discovery of America. This underground treasure brought many of the great minds of European natural science to this town, played an important part in the town’s life and provided food for the miners’ families. The mining process led to hundreds of kilometres of underground galleries situated directly under the town. Today, the Heritage of Mercury in Idrija and Almadén – the biggest mercury mine in the world – is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The 2.5 km trail along Rake is the only trail in Idrija that offers a leisurely walk without having to go uphill. It runs on the Idrijca River’s left bank past suspension bridges that offer a nice view of the thundery beauty of Idrijca to the Wild Lake. Along the way, you can observe some of the botanical jewels that have always aroused the curiosity of European natural scientist. FEATURES

Geopark Idrija as seen from Javornik
The Idrija Geopark that includes the territory of the Municipality of Idrija is an area with exceptional geological features and other natural and cultural heritage, unique to Slovenia. For over 500 years, since the discovery of mercury in 1490, the history and development of Idrija and its surroundings have been inseparably linked to the mercury mine, which is the second largest mercury mine in the world.
Črni Vrh as seen from Velika peč
The Idrija Geopark is located at the junction of the Alps and the Dinaric Karst. A quarter of the eastern part of the Geopark is comprised of a high-lying, vast, partly-karst Rovte Hills with four plateaus (the Ledine Plateau, the Vrsnik Plateau, the Dole Plateau and the Zavratec Plateau). The western part of the Geopark encompasses the Vojsko Plateau, the Krnice Ridge, the Šebrelje Plateau and the terraces in Čekovnik. These plateaus feature isolated karst with a low level of underground water and rare karst phenomena. The southern part of the Geopark with its typical deep karst rises above the Idrijca Valley and encompasses the Črni Vrh Plateau with karst fields of Črni Vrh and Zadlog. The southernmost parts of the Črni Vrh Plateau are surrounded by steep hills with elevations between 900 and 1200 meters. The plateaus are separated by deep valleys with steep slopes and mainly flashy watercourses. The Idrijca and Belca rivers, flowing through the deep valley, are joined in the settlement of Idrijska Bela and wind as the Idrijca River towards the town of Most na Soči.
Here, one can find carbonate rock, rock from the Permian, Triassic, Cretaceous to rock from Palaeocene and Eocene. During tectonic movements in the Middle Triassic, the unique Idrija mercury ore deposit started to form. The area of the Idrija Geopark is a part of the thrust structure with characteristic individual nappes and intermediate thrust slices and can be followed all the way to Istria. It was formed in the Miocene due to subduction of the Adriatic Plate under the Eurasian Plate. Various faults, such as the Idrija Fault, have contributed to the present structure of the area. The area is mostly covered with woods; the most typical are fir and beech trees. There are also numerous botanic features on high-mountain, arid, semi-arid and wet grasslands, communities of crevices, screes, rocky grasslands and marsh communities. The area is very rich in pteridophytes and spermatophytes that have always been of interest to researchers. Among these, a special mention goes to the following endemic species: Primula Carniolica, Hacquetia epipactis and Scopolia carniolica. The woods of Idrija are a part of the karst plateau Trnovski Gozd, which stretches all the way to the woods in Croatia, where there are big mammals (bear, wolf, marten, otter, wildcat, deer, and wild boar) as well as small ones (dormouse, rodents, hedgehog, shrew, and bat). A lynx, which may soon become extinct, and chamois, which lives in rock ridges, gorges and sunny slopes, have also found their habitat in this area.

Heritage of Mercury. Almadén and Idrija inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2012
Idrija lace is a significant part of the Slovene cultural heritage that has been preserved and developed through time. It is a monument of inventiveness, persistence, precision, and patience – characteristics that were and still are common to the authors of bobbin lace patterns, lace makers, tenderers, and also to us – lace users. We, who want the lace to brighten our everyday or holiday, are the ones to keep the skill in making of the Idrija lace, one of the most difficult manual dexterities, alive and present.
The uniqueness and richness of the most significant sites of the Idrija cultural heritage and its surroundings as well as the perfection of preserved monumental technical devices and machines testify to the exceptional significance of this area in its 500-year-old history of mercury production. The mine enabled the town of Idrija to develop educational and cultural institutions that provided knowledge and culture to the locals. The mining activity also brought the lace
activity into town. It was developed by women with their feel for aesthetics, and provided an additional income. The heritage of Idrija and Almadén, the world’s largest mercury mines, were acknowledged as the exceptional universal values for all humankind, and in 2012, they were inscribed on the UNESCO’s List of World Heritage. A rural population lived in the surroundings of Idrija. Farms of wealthy farmers in Spodnja Idrija and large isolated farms in the Idrija Hills, whose residential and economic facilities bear witness to their economic independence, have been preserved up until today. Military facilities, routes, boundary fortifications and burial grounds from the First and Second World War prove that turbulent world events in the recent past have left a mark in the area.
Visit the Idrija Geopark and discover the neverending creative power of nature and human mind, enjoy the fresh air, magnificent views, our hospitality and interesting stories, written by nature and the people.

IDRIJA Geopark
The Idrija Geopark will not only satisfy your curiosity and sports spirit, but it will also take care of your taste buds. Idrija with its surroundings offers various typical dishes, desserts and drinks that please every traveller. Idrijski žlikrofi, made of paste with a potato filling and of characteristic shape, are the most recognizable, even EU protected holiday dish, prepared by Idrija housewives, and continue to be a regular dish on the menus of many ceremonial occasions. The locals like to serve them to every visitor, preferably with bakalca, a dish with mutton and vegetables. For special occasions, many other local specialties, such as zeljševka, ocvirkovca, smukavc or štruklji, are being served. In the past, every house in town had its own wormwood bush. The miners cooked the wormwood and this pelinovka was mixed with spirit to produce geruš - wormwood bitters.
