Like the sea glass that inspires its name, the Sea Glass Initiative is a symbol of transformation— taking what is broken and reshaping it into something beautiful. For those experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity in Baldwin County, Sea Glass offers not just resources, but a path forward.

Founded to serve the local unhoused population, the organization provides individualized case management, helping clients secure everything from emergency shelter and rental deposits to childcare, car repairs, and job readiness support. “We don’t just hand someone a resource list and wish them luck,” a team member shares. “We walk alongside them, from intake to move-in day.”

Each story is personal. Mary, a 74-year-old widow, lost her home after rent increases outpaced her fixed income. She now tries to remain unseen, showering at a local gym and walking parks during the day. Sadly, her story is not unique— 60% of Baldwin County’s unhoused have lived here for 10 years or more.

i n t o H o p e

Sea Glass responds with compassion, offering programs like The Table food outreach, Move Day assistance, and a Mentor Program to ease the transition into stable housing.

Volunteers are vital to the mission— mentoring, transporting clients, hosting fundraisers, and serving meals. “You don’t need to fix everything,” one volunteer shares. “You just need to show up—and that’s powerful.”

Looking ahead, Sea Glass is planning a comprehensive resource center, bringing multiple service agencies under one roof to streamline care and increase impact.

Despite the emotional challenges, the victories—big and small—fuel the team’s efforts. One client, unhoused for 10 months, recently moved into stable housing. “It’s not just about finding someone a place to live,” the team says. “It’s about restoring hope.”

FAIRHO P E ROTARY

STEAK COOK - OFF

This event is a testament to how deeply our community cares,” said Chad Clarke, Steak Cook-Off Coordinator. “We’re honored by the trust Fairhope places in Rotary to serve where we’re needed most.”

The 2025 Cook-Off saw record-breaking engagement— sponsors reached out before being asked, early bird tickets sold quickly, and the VIP experience earned rave reviews. For the first time, one team—Fairhope Sunset Rotary Club—claimed both the Grand Champion and People’s Choice awards.

The Rotary Club of Fairhope—the oldest and largest on the Eastern Shore—continues to live out its mission of “Service Above Self.” With the support of major sponsors like Piggly Wiggly and continued partnership with event planner Mary Megan Parker, who assisted with this year’s success, the club is already planning for its 20th anniversary—and it promises to be the biggest year yet.

THE FACES OF Great BBQ & Good Vibes

When John MacArthur, owner of Johnny Mac’s, spotted pitmaster Drew Davenport hauling his smoker after a Live at 5 event, he knew they could cook up something special together. That chance encounter led to Fairhope Smoke Shack—a new venture blending Drew’s low-and-slow BBQ roots with John’s passion for great food and good times. Drew shares, "John had the space and I had the smoker—and we both wanted to bring something authentic to Fairhope. We’ve been building it out together ever since."

What's on the menu?

Texas-style brisket, cowboy beans—a hearty pinto bean flavored to perfection—and other simple sides done right. Four meats, four sides, fast service, bold flavor. The Texas-style pit-smoked brisket goes low and slow for 16 to 20 hours. The menu is heavily influenced by Drew's wife’s family.

John adds, "Drew had cooked behind the scenes from Montana to Texas, serving major artists and music festivals before catering for Live at 5 backstage. I wanted to bring that same laid-back, backyardstyle setup—where musicians could relax and recharge over a great meal—to the people of Fairhope.

What does John want folks to know about Johnny Mac's?

Picture an old-school garage meets juke joint—cold beer in hand, live music in the air. Johnny Mac’s is all about creating a laid-back space where people can relax, connect, and enjoy consistently great BBQ, thanks to the addition of Fairhope Smoke Shack. With a full bar and welcoming vibe, everyone’s invited to kick back and stay awhile at Johnny Mac's.

MICHELLE

Bigler

THE FACE OF Southern Hospitality in Real Estate

Whether spending time with her own or helping yours find the perfect home, family comes first for Michelle Bigler. A real estate professional serving the Gulf Coast for over 25 years, Michelle brings deep community knowledge and a strong entrepreneurial background to her work. As a former business owner—including a children’s boutique and advertising agency—she combines marketing expertise with a personal touch to deliver standout service and results. A devoted wife and mom of four, Michelle is also a passionate advocate for individuals with neurological and developmental differences. Known for her warm approach, Southern hospitality, and tireless work ethic, she makes each client feel like family.

What makes you different from other realtors?

Though I never pursued a career in psychology, studying it in college helped me better understand people and navigate important life moments. That insight, along with my retail and marketing background, allows me to meet clients where they are—offering personalized service rooted in patience, creativity, and strategy.

What do you enjoy most about a career in real estate?

Relationships are everything to me, but I also love the negotiation process. If I hadn’t become a realtor, I would’ve gone to law school. Real estate gives me the best of both worlds—social connection and strategic thinking—without being tied to an office. I truly love what I do.

THE FACES Behind the Gulf Coast’s Premier Vacation Experience

How would you describe the BEACHBALL PROPERTIES experience?

Hunter: It’s hospitality with heart. From booking to checkout, we’re hands on real people delivering real service. Owners know us by name. That’s the BEACHBALL difference.

In what ways have you been game changers in your industry?

Ginger: I helped draft Alabama’s groundbreaking Merchant of Record bill to protect vacation rental managers from third-party platform overreach, now a model for other states. Hunter and I have always been fierce advocates, carving out space, claiming our market share, and standing up to burdensome regulations. We’re not just growing a business. We’re protecting the future of our profession.

What’s new and exciting at BEACHBALL PROPERTIES?

Ginger: We’re expanding into Perdido Key and launching SNOWBALL PROPERTIES in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. Same BEACHBALL service in a brand-new setting.

Hunter: We’re investing in tech that helps owners earn more and guests enjoy smoother stays. From dynamic pricing to better communication and direct booking, we’re staying ahead while staying true to our roots: local service, real relationships, and a team that shows up.

What role does community involvement play in your business?

Ginger: It’s everything. We sponsor local events, support small businesses, and show up. We believe in being active members of the place we live and work.

Hunter: We live here, raise our kids here, and serve here. This is personal.

How does your team deliver on your promise of “service with a hug and a handshake”?

Hunter: That phrase was born from how we were raised. Do right by people, treat them like family, and follow through.

Little Bird Opens Its Doors

Little Bird, a new coastal Southern restaurant, has opened in downtown Fairhope under the leadership of five-time James Beard Award nominee Executive Chef Bill Briand. With over 30 years of Gulf Coast culinary experience, Briand—alongside his talented team—offers a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Virginia Eileen. The restaurant’s name and thoughtfully designed interior reflect her legacy, with each room telling a piece of her story.

Blending elevated Southern cuisine with genuine hospitality, Little Bird serves locally sourced seafood, comforting sides, and a mix of casual lunch and refined dinner options. Known for his signature “seafood Southern soul food,” Briand partnered with Deep Roots Restaurant Group and Hope Farm co-founders Robert and Bentley Evans to bring his vision to life.

Officially opened on June 4, the restaurant was welcomed with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce. Supermom

Kristi Deason Hagood

BALANCING the scales

Kristi’s experience as a working mom has taken many forms over the years, from full-time work with a baby in daycare, to part-time work from home, to stepping away from paid work to care for aging parents. She believes that having it all is possible—but not all at once—and that flexibility and patience are key. Through every phase, Kristi has remained committed to both her family and her calling.

She graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2000 and has spent nearly 25 years practicing law, primarily as a criminal prosecutor. She is licensed in both Alabama and Louisiana and has served in the Attorney General’s Offices of both states. Since 2017, Kristi has worked for the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, focusing on the Child Advocacy Unit and the Elder Abuse/ Financial Crime Unit. In these roles, she prosecutes some of the county’s most sensitive and complex cases, advocating for children, seniors, and vulnerable victims with strength and compassion. Her work often involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to pursue justice and protect those who cannot protect themselves.

Kristi and her husband, Dr. Lanier Hagood—a gastroenterologist at Baldwin Health—have been married for 22 years. They have two children: Molly, a junior at the University of Mississippi, and Thomas, a freshman at St. Michael Catholic High School. The Hagoods have called Baldwin County home since 2009 and are active in 3 Circle Church in Fairhope.

Creative

She hopes her children see in her and Lanier’s relationship a model of mutual support, partnership, and unconditional love. When she’s in trial mode, Lanier steps in completely at home, and she credits their teamwork with helping their family thrive. One of Kristi’s most treasured memories is a simple one—her daughter’s fondness for a last-minute Valentine’s box she threw together during a particularly hectic season, reminding her that small moments matter most.

Kristi felt drawn to advocacy for child victims while studying political science in college and interning with The Birmingham News, where she reported on cases involving children. That experience confirmed her desire to become a prosecutor and dedicate her career to standing up for vulnerable victims. Over the years, she has also come to value mentoring and training others who do this important work.

She acknowledges the emotional weight of her job but finds balance through her faith, family, and consistent self-care—including sleep, exercise, prayer, and time spent reading or enjoying music. Kristi believes motherhood has helped her better connect with child victims, building the trust required to guide them through difficult legal processes.

Above all, Kristi hopes her children learn the importance of courage, empathy, and standing up for what’s right—from watching her do just that, every day.

Why are you running?

I care deeply about the people, values, and future of Orange Beach. As a parent with children in our schools, I understand the importance of strong public education. I’m committed to transparent, commonsense leadership and being a strong voice for families and small businesses. After years of conversations with residents, parents, business owners and city leaders, I felt it was time to serve in a more direct way.

How has your background prepared you to serve your community?

I’ve worked inside City Hall and built a business from the ground up. I know how to plan strategically, navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and see every angle. That lived experience matters.

2025 BALDWIN COUNTY MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

As Baldwin County’s municipalities prepare for the upcoming elections, candidates are aiming to protect the charm that drew so many families here in the first place. Baldwin County is growing fast, and the decisions made in this year’s municipal elections will shape our communities for generations to come— impacting everything from infrastructure and emergency services to parks and long-term planning. While general elections often inspire higher turnout, local elections determine the leadership that most directly affects our daily lives. Bridging that gap in civic engagement is critical—because the future of Baldwin County isn’t just decided in Washington or Montgomery; it’s being shaped right here, one local vote at a time.

JAY ROBINSON

FAIRHOPE CITY COUNCIL PLACE 4

Jay and his, wife, Alex feel incredibly blessed to be raising their four children—ages (16), (12), (8), and (4) - in Fairhope. All four are proud Fairhope natives, born at Thomas Hospital and currently attending Fairhope’s public schools. Jay is a strong supporter of Fairhope schools and believes they play a vital role in the strength and future of the community.

For nearly two decades, giving back to Fairhope has been a top priority for Jay - whether through volunteering on the Planning Commission, Recreation Board, Historic Preservation Commission or mentoring youth through coaching in many of Fairhope's youth recreation sports. Jay and his family are active at Fairhope United Methodist Church, where they have volunteered to teach Sunday School and Vacation Bible School over the years.

Professionally, Jay is a partner at the law firm Frazer, Greene, Upchurch & Baker. His legal expertise has proven to be a valuable asset to both the City Council and the citizens of Fairhope.

Growth is one of our biggest challenges.

I’ve listened to your concerns about traffic, overdevelopment, and infrastructure—and I share them. On the City Council, I’ve worked to protect what makes Fairhope special while guiding smart, responsible growth.

I’ve supported development moratoriums for better planning, $60+ million in infrastructure upgrades, zoning updates to protect neighborhoods, and investments in recreation, walkability, and quality-of-life projects that reflect Fairhope’s character.

Why should Fairhope residents trust you with another term?

I’ll continue to lead with humility and respect for the trust you’ve placed in me—showing up, listening, and doing the work. Now more than ever, we need experienced, steady leadership to navigate the challenges ahead. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, and I remain deeply committed to building the best future—for your children and mine.

FAIRHOPE CITY COUNCIL PLACE 3

JIMMY CONYERS

Jimmy moved to Fairhope in 2003 with his wife, Ashley—a Fairhope native— to raise their family in the town they both love. The Conyers have two daughters. Their oldest graduated from Fairhope High School in 2024, and their youngest is a rising Junior at the school.

Jimmy brings strong experience in finance, leadership, and service. As Alabama Market President for Merchants & Marine Bank and a 2000 graduate of Auburn University with a B.S.B.A. in Business Management, he is deeply engaged in the community through St. James Episcopal Church, local Kiwanis Clubs, and leadership roles with Family Promise of Baldwin County and the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber. He originally ran for office to establish a foundation rooted in responsible growth, education, economic strength, and quality of life—and continues to build on that vision.

Responsibly managing growth is vital, especially given the strain it places on our infrastructure.

I’ve supported over $50 million in infrastructure projects in this year’s budget alone and voted for multiple moratoriums to allow time for smarter, more thoughtful planning.

How does your background help?

I bring valuable experience in budgeting, forecasting, and team management—skills that are essential as the city manages nearly $190 million in combined budgets. Leading teams across multiple locations has given me insight into navigating personnel-related matters, including compensation, benefits, staffing, and organizational structure.

How do you approach working with others to achieve common goals?

Collaboration is key to meaningful progress. I rely on emotional intelligence to build relationships, listen, and foster consensus—with patience, empathy, and calm leadership at the core of my approach.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

That future generations enjoy the green spaces, restored waterfront, and community assets we protected—and that, no matter where life takes them my daughters can proudly say, “I’m from Fairhope.”

Paid for by Committee to Elect Jimmy Conyers, PO Box 1971, Fairhope, AL 36533

Jack and his wife of 30 years, Patti, have proudly called Fairhope home for over two decades. Their two children are both graduates of Fairhope High School. Jack is an Advanced Certified Municipal Official and was named Fairhope’s “Volunteer of the Year” in 2009. He has twice served as President of the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation Board and remains active in the Sertoma and Lions Clubs, with past leadership roles in several other local nonprofits. He was recently honored as a Distinguished Alumni Fellow by MSU’s Bagley College of Engineering.

Professionally, Jack brings a wealth of experience as a Senior Principal Aerospace Engineer at Leidos Dynetics, where he designs and tests aerospace hardware for the Department of Defense and the U.S. Armed Forces. He also owns a successful vacation rental property business.

How has your leadership shaped Fairhope?

I’ve worked to eliminate the city’s General Fund debt, led efforts to require live-streaming of Council and Planning Commission meetings, and supported acquiring the Fairhope K-1 Center—soon to become a hub for entrepreneurship. As Chairman of the Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization (ESMPO), I helped secure toll-free routes for locals as part of the Mobile Bay Bridge project. I also serve as Council liaison to both the Fairhope Airport Authority and Industrial Development Board.

Why should Fairhope residents trust you with another term?

Experience matters. With over a decade on the City Council—including ten years as President—I bring steady, proven leadership. I understand the inner workings of our city and have a track record of action, not just promises. I’m not afraid to ask tough questions and always lead with transparency, smart growth, and fiscal responsibility. I’ll continue to listen with intention and make thoughtful, forward-looking decisions that reflect Fairhope’s values and priorities.

SIP

Signature Cocktails from Local Hotspots

THE GINNY

INGREDIENTS:

2 oz Ford’s Gin

0.25 oz Olive Brine

0.75 oz Dry Vermouth

1–2 dashes Orange Bitters

Sidecar: Pimento stuffed olive, blue cheese stuffed olive, candied jalapeno stuffed olive, lemon peel

WHAT YOU NEED

Cocktail shaker

Hawthorne strainer

Jigger (for measuring)

Fine mesh strainer (optional, for extra clarity)

Chilled martini glass & sidecar glass

Bar spoon (optional, for stirring if preferred over shaking)

DIRECTIONS:

Chill your glass ahead of time by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the gin, olive brine, vermouth, and orange bitters. Shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds until the shaker is icy cold—or stir if you prefer a smoother, silkier texture. Strain the mixture into your chilled martini or coupe glass using a Hawthorne strainer. For a crystal-clear finish, you can double strain through a fine mesh strainer.

Garnish: Serve with a sidecar filled with crushed or pebble ice, topped with a mix of blue cheese-, pimento-, and candied jalapeño-stuffed olives, finished with a twist of lemon peel.

&OLIVIA JACOB

On a beautiful day surrounded by love, laughter, and a setting sun, Olivia Firth and Jacob Bailey said “I do” in front of the charming white chapel at Hatcher Farms. Their wedding, held before 150 close friends and family, was the culmination of a love story that began nearly a decade ago—when they were just 14 years old.

PHOTOS BY LACEY BOSARGE - LACEY HOPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Olivia, an aerospace engineer, and Jacob, a delivery merchandiser for Coca-Cola, first met during their freshman year of high school in 2015. Though they hadn’t attended the same middle school, a mutual connection— and a little help from social media—brought them together. After more than nine years of dating, Jacob proposed on January 13, 2024, on the banks of Fowl River at Olivia’s aunt’s home. What began as an ordinary evening with family turned into an unforgettable moment, complete with a surprise engagement party and the perfect sunset.

For the wedding, Olivia chose a timeless strapless ballgown with a slit, discovered on Bliss Bridal’s Instagram. The day featured an elegant color palette of tan, mocha, white, and pops of sage green. The ceremony was full of sweet moments—including a humorous one when Jacob’s swollen fingers made sliding on the ring a bit tricky.

From the couple’s heartfelt vows to the packed dance floor, the celebration was a true reflection of their personalities. Guests enjoyed a delicious Southern-inspired spread including grilled chicken Alfredo, pork tenderloin, and a mashed potato bar. The three-tiered wedding cake, adorned with a gold "B" crest and fresh flowers, featured a strawberry filling, while the groom’s cake—chocolate with peanut butter icing—paid tribute to Jacob’s love for the Atlanta Braves.

Following their wedding, Olivia and Jacob honeymooned at Excellence Playa Mujeres in Cancun and returned home to their new house in Theodore, Alabama—near Fowl River where their forever began.
