Chairman’s Report Hi Folks, First I would like to thank all those that had their cars at the Waimate “50”. A good selection. I felt that Saturday afternoon was very slow, but things improved on Sunday. Next year I would like to have someone on the Waimate “50” Committee so we can have some input.

At our last meeting Trevor Joyce spoke about his involvement with the Australian Road Show 20 plus years ago, it was a very informative talk on the comings and goings over the weeks and miles they travelled Next meeting Lindsay will arrange another Guest Speaker.

Owen is unable to carry on as our Secretary due to illness ( Hopefully Temporary Leave) so Marie has agreed to step in to that position.

I have written to VCC Head Office explaining what we propose to do about forming a Group consisting of Kids interested in Classic, or older, cars.

I hope to have more info at the next meeting. Anyone interested in helping to get this up and running ( PLEASE) let me know. We still have some bits and pieces of the Prefect to pick up, hoping for a free fine day.

Thanks once again for all your help and input. We are all wishing Owen a speedy recovery.

Club Captains Report The guest speaker for the October club meeting was Trevor Joyce, who gave us a fascinating talk on his involvement in the Australian bi centenary of 1988. With a cast of hundreds and many trucks, this enormous display was travelled around Australia depicting the history of the country.

Trevor had a great video to go with his talk, and this made for a very enjoyable evening.

The final event for the year will be a run to Omarama, in early December, to visit Murray Stuart, and look around his vintage vehicles, shed, and have an end of year picnic.

Wet or dry, Murray has a great set up, with kitchen,toilet etc,and we are welcome to use his facilities. Also, if desired, anybody can camp there the night.

In view of this, we will have the run on the Saturday the 2 December, and those who may wish to stay will be able look around Omarama on the Sunday. Most places are open all weekend, and to those not familiar with the area will find plenty to do.

This will be a great day out, or weekend if you wish.

A head count of how many would like to join in for this end of year get together would be appreciated, so I can advise Murray. Also if any wish to camp the night.

This was my 2 visit to watch the Great race where over 4 days 204,000 viewed the racing.

There is nothing quite like viewing the racing live, from the viewing on pit straight with all the activity going on in the garages, going up to the top of the mountain (that’s NZ for a large hill) to view the cars weaving their way up the mountain. And down on to conrod straight.

In addition to the main V8 races there is good support race from the V8 utes, Dunlop series for the second tier of v8 cars, porches and Toyota 86,s.

But the most exciting support race was the V8 muscle car series with 25 cars from NZ coming over to Australia to join 25 local cars. Brings back a lot of memories with the Mustangs, Camaro’s, Valiant , Falcon’s GT, GTHO’s and a few Holdens thrown in makes great racing.

This year was the 10th year since the death of the King of the mountain Peter Brock and to commemorate that during the lunch break on race day they paraded around the circuit a large selection of the cars he has raced over the years starting with a Austin A30 and thrown in the mix with the numerous Holden's were a couple of ford Sierra's.

All in All great 4 days of racing.

Candlelight Castle (part 2) Continued from last month After the show we went backstage and were taken on a tour of all the props used in the concert and then we were taken to the massive kitchen area.

The kitchen provides meals for the 500 plus community and all the folk that attend each concert or matinee over the 6 weeks of the show time. Quite a feat and as you can imagine the kitchen would rival any large kitchen through the country. The community makes their own bread: 5 ton of butter and 10 ton of cheese: and 2½ ton ice cream. They grow some vegetables weather providing: raise chickens for eggs and they have dairy farms for milk and cream.

However they do have to bring in food and also they buy some clothing and footwear from Greymouth.

The complex is the largest supplier of milk to Westland Dairy in Hokitika. They also have their own pet food manufacturing plant and the pet food is sold commercially.

Gloriavale also manufactures gardening products made from sphagnum moss. As well as all this members host deer hunting safaris.

There is a sewing room at the complex where they make the dresses for the women and children and possibly some of the men’s clothing.

They have their own school rooms and at present they are building a large new school at the complex.

They have buildings on site for training all their own male apprentices in most trades that are needed at the complex and the women do most of the washing, cooking, cleaning and the like. They have their own fully trained midwives but no doctor. A doctor visits the complex every few weeks.

After a good night’s sleep we went to another of the three storied buildings for our breakfast and met up with a few other folk who had also stayed the night. Breakfast was another well set out affair. Tables were set with tablecloths, cutlery, drinking glasses, breakfast cereals and we were asked if we would like a cooked meal of bacon and eggs, followed by toast, tea, coffee or milo. Members of the community joined us at the tables and we were free to ask any questions. All these queries were answered well and without hesitation. After breakfast we were given a box containing 2 filled rolls each, large white chocolate chippie biscuits, fruit and a bottle of their own apple cider – yummy – to take away with us.

Despite the fact that it rained the whole time we were there and we had thunder and lightning as well we deem ourselves very fortunate to have had the hands on experience for ourselves and yes we would not hesitate to return again in two years time to soak up the hospitality that was shown to us all the time were on their home ground. We heard not a cross word, the adults made us welcome, the children were a delight and all were polite, the whole complex was extremely tidy and the buildings were very clean.

Everybody is kind, caring and very considerate of others. Their concerts are world class and top marks to each and everyone of them.

If the opportunity arises for you to attend one of the concerts in the future I would suggest that you attend and form your own views on Gloriavale. I am certain that you will find it a very uplifting and worthwhile experience.
