Restoration of the Year
By Editor Ian
Four entrants, consisting of two cars and two motorcycles, participated in this year’s Restoration of the Year. Tom Clouston was the People’s Choice in the car section with his stunning Veteran, a 1908 AX Renault. This former Carterton Sawmills car sat in Tom’s late father’s garage for 35 years in an unrestored condition. Tom owned it for another 16 years before beginning a comprehensive restoration. The 2-cylinder car, capable of cruising at 30mph, retains its original motor and gearbox. Tom collected the car from the upholsterers on the day of the judging.
Shane and Noeline Hobman entered their race car, a very fast-looking 1957 Chevrolet 150 Utility Sedan. This Black Widow replica was formerly a drag car in the USA and originally built by SEDCO. And no, I haven't made a mistake in describing the vehicle; it is indeed a Utility Sedan!
Lloyd Williams is no stranger to restoring motorcycles. Lloyd won the People's Choice award in the motorcycle section with his immaculate 1928 AJS K5, a 350cc machine. He recently purchased this after it had sat unrestored for over 30 years. He undertook a full restoration over the past few months.
Mike Marshall is also no stranger to restoring motorcycles. He showcased a beautiful 1956 BSA Bantam 150cc. Mike seems to have a fondness for these machines, having restored others previously. He found this one in a dilapidated state in Taupo, and then worked his magic on it.
Congratulations to the four entrants, and thank you very much for showcasing your vehicles. It was a splendid display.
