The warmer weather is upon us (I am reliably informed) and we have a busy motoring and sporting time ahead of us.

The Peninsula Run is on for the 30th October and numerous rallies and races are noted below.

Banks Peninsula Branch Opening Run The day didn’t dawn gloriously fine and consequently numbers were a bit down for this year’s run, but cold though it was, the threatened rain didn’t really come and a nice day’s motoring ensued. Michael Pidgeon had organised a predominantly back-road run starting in Cashmere. Heading out through some Halswell roads of the less well travelled variety, we travelled through Weedons and Sandy Knolls before emerging a little muddier onto SH 73 and into Springfield. A brief spell of seal and we headed off into the Malvern Hills which we wended round in a most satisfactory route and imagined interesting views through the mist.

By a circuitous route we ended up a few miles from Springfield at Jenny and Don Wright’s farm where the assorted masses were shown around the interesting collection of veteran, vintage, agricultural and modern vehicles. We were then plied with wine and a tour of the massive irrigation scheme the Wrights have constructed was shown and we all went home well satisfied.

New Branch Event: ‘By Hoki’ Tour. (Ramon Famer)

By Hoki Tour; Christchurch Show Weekend, 11-13 November 2016.

Banks Peninsula Branch, Touring Weekend; depart from Pukeko Junction 0930 hrs Friday 11 November.

Friday 11th; Christchurch-Hokitika via Lewis Pass, Reefton, Moana.

Saturday 12th; scenic tour Hokitika-Ross hinterland and/or enjoy Hokitika arts/experiences.

Sunday 13th; Hokitika-Christchurch via Goldsborough, Arthurs Pass, Porters Pass.

Since we’ve not had a long weekend tour for some time and the whitebait are presently running well, a Friday tour to Hokitika via the Lewis Pass will be followed by a scenic Saturday about Hoki, with a planned return to Christchurch on the Sunday, via an interesting back road and Arthur’s Pass, to be home before 6:00 pm.

Gather for breakfast Friday morning at 9:00 am at Pukeko Junction, SH1, Leithfield, departing at 9:30 for Waipara, Culverden, Lewis Pass, Springs Junction and late lunch in Reefton at the renowned Broadway Tearooms. Continue down the Grey Valley, passing through Nelson Creek, Moana, Mitchells, the Greenstone, Kumara and thence to Hokitika.

Suggested accommodation is at Seaview, located on the high terrace above Hokitika as you enter from the north (turn left uphill just after the Information board; pass the cemetery and find the former hospital on your left). The two Lodge options, with bedding provided, are Seaview Lodge (up to 20 people in twin/double rooms or a family room) or Kiwi Lodge (up to 25 people in single/double rooms.

Prepare your own breakfast at the lodge Saturday and Sunday; dinner Friday/Saturday in Hokitika hotel/restaurants (own preferences) or prepare a meal at Seaview. Lunches each day will be taken at suitable commercial stops but some may prefer rather to take a picnic. Friday and Saturday evening enjoy a Happy Hoki Hour at Seaview before dinner. Comfortable quarters, good lounge, glimpse of Mt Cook on clear days and magnificent sunsets over the pond towards Australia (terms and conditions apply). Seaview also has its own resident glow worms which perform nightly; their home is described for tourists as Glow-worm Dell.

The Saturday scenic tour will reveal some aspects you may never have seen before, and the weekend will open some eyes to the West Coast Gold Rushes. The tour will cross or follow the Alpine Fault several times and though you may have seen the Whataroa Duzgo, have you seen the Ross equivalent? If you prefer a quiet Saturday, Hokitika has much for you to do and see; note that the Hokitika Museum (historic Carnegie Building, Hamilton/Tancred Streets) is currently closed due to earthquake concerns, however the following are strongly recommended: National Kiwi Centre (kiwis, eels and other wildlife), Hokitika Craft Gallery (artists co-operative for wool, wood, pounamu, pottery etc.), Sock Machine Museum (buy a machine and knit your own loud socks),and if in doubt visit the iSite adjacent to the clock tower where Shona and her team can suggest a number of other eclectic options.

The tour is not just for the hairy-chested, nevertheless do bring good wet weather gear. If the weekend is a success then Ramon Farmer and Michael Pidgeon are the responsible parties; if not, then at least you know whom to tar and feather.

This will be open to pre 1960 historic racing cars, sports cars, and sporting type touring cars. Some post 1960 cars have been accepted by Motor sport, others that do not fit into any other field because of lap times have also been accepted.

All entrants must have a Vehicle Identity Card, Log Book and Historic Licence, or Motor Sport equivalent. This is another opportunity to exercise your vehicle in an appropriate manner with similar vehicles.

All entries will be acknowledged with copies of the V.C.C. of N.Z. Inc. speed regulations, supplementary regulations, vehicle safety statement and drivers briefing. If you intend competing at this event please return enclosed entry form and indemnity form fully completed together with payment by SATURDAY 12TH NOVEMBER 2016.

Evolution Motorsport Classic Teretonga Park February 17-18- 19 Feb 2017 Historic muscle cars - 60 years of formula juniors - historic touring cars - classic saloons - sports & racing cars The vintage class is definitely a goer. As you can see and may have already known, this is the 25th running of this event. The Vintage class, although very strong in other regions, has had a bit of a diminished field of late down our way. There are some new entrants this year, and some cars returning to the fold, but we can never have too many. Make the effort to join us and see how good this venue really is.

I know I'm missing a couple of email addresses I would like to send stuff to, and am making good progress on fixing that, but if you know of someone with a suitable car, you could let me know their details and also forward this to them.

To all entered and intending Rally Entrants Feedback from intending entrants tells us that there are some very interesting machines destined for the National Motorcycle Rally at Waitomo in February. Some folk, it seems, intend to bring two bikes, their early model for the weekend of rallying and to use a later machine for the following tour.

Of course the touring bike is not required to have a VIC, just so long as it was originally built prior to 1987. We have made an arrangement for your spare machine to be stored in a secured lock-up facility just a few kms from the village if you need that whilst away touring – your risk of course.

Trailers can be left at Rally HQ if required, but in the interests of security you should have some way of disabling them while parked.

We have recently (mid-September) carried out a check of some of the accommodation available in the Waitomo district for the weekend of the rally, with the following results:      

Waitomo Caves Hotel (the old THC hotel) –four rooms still available and good trailer parking.

Ask for the vintage rally party preferential rate when booking with Corinne.

Kiwi Paka Lodge (bus tours or back-packers) – one or two and may have to change rooms during stay.

Top Ten Holiday Park – only motorhomes, tents or caravans (must book these and advise if a caravan).

Juno Lodge (YHA) – only one private room and dormitories, with shared facilities.

Caves Motor Inn at Hangatiki (7 kms to Waitomo) – eighteen units still available including one family size.

Glow-worm Motel at Hangatiki (7 kms to Waitomo) – just one family sized unit still available.

We did not check smaller operators or those further away, as there are still Waitomo rooms available. We are sure that this is going to be a memorable event, with great riding and much social opportunity. You will enjoy meals and entertainment in the great hall at Woodlyn Park, surrounded by so much interesting rural memorabilia. Our meals caterer is the same as looked after us so well in the town hall at Cambridge in 2005. Have you ever seen the inside of a rural helicopter service depot or ventured inside an early blacksmith’s shop? Stay on for the after-rally tour and each day further interesting visits will intrigue you. Despite the description of our daily breakfasts as ‘light’, there will be no excuse for going out for the day hungry as Sanitarium have excelled themselves in their generosity.

Our international body, FIVA, is considering giving this national event ‘World Motoring Heritage Year’ status in collaboration with UNESCO. You do need to be able to say you were there! Got a bike you are especially proud of? There will of course be a competently judged ‘Concours d’elegance’ competition as well as the more subjective ‘People’s Choice’. Have you encouraged your overseas motorcycling friends to come along and join in – why not do so and even lend them a bike to enjoy our kiwi riding and hospitality.

While the Rally HQ building is limited in size, some appropriate decoration is warranted. We would like to ask any owners of veteran era bikes if they would care to see them displayed in rotation in the Rally HQ building for the pleasure of other entrants.

The Country Gentlemen’s Historic Racing & Sports Car Club Hawkswood Bent sprint 20th November 2016. Members of the V.C.C. have been invited by The Country Gentlemen’s Historic Racing & Sports Car Club to participate in the above event. This will be open to all Club Eligible vehicles. All entrants must have a Vehicle Identity Card and Log book and Historic License or Motor Sport equivalent. This is another opportunity to exercise your vehicle in a appropriate manner with similar vehicles. All entries will be acknowledged with copies of the V.C.C. of N.Z. (Inc.) Speed Regulation, Supplementary Regulations, Vehicle Safety Statement, and Drivers Briefing. Scrutineering will be held at Auto Restorations 52 Stewart St Christchurch on Wednesday 16th November from 5.00pm to 7.00pm for local entries, non-local at venue from 8.30 am on the day. Wanganui Branch is proud to host the 2017 National Veteran Rally. The rally will be held on Sunday 22nd January, right in the middle of the Vintage Weekend, Wanganui’s premiere heritage event. The rally programme gives you the opportunity to be involved in Heritage Weekend activities and attractions, and social events that combine with the entrants of the Burma Rally (to be run on the same day).

They are trying to get a list of veteran vehicle owners, and others, who may be interested in getting further information about this rally.

Parliamentary Tour. 29th January - 5th February 2017.

Thirty five veteran cars, some to carry and escort Members of Parliament on a tour of the Winterless Far North to mark the centenary of the great Parliamentary Tour of 1917. The cars will leave Devonport on Sunday 29th of January and arrive back in Auckland on the 5th of February 2017. The run will finish at the Auckland Town Hall as it did in 1917. There will be a baggage vehicle and a tow truck behind the last vehicle each day. Participants can start and finish the tour in Warkworth if you wish. There will be somewhere to store cars and trailers both in Auckland and Warkworth. Participants on the tour will be responsible for their own costs. Haast Tour – 4/10 February 2017 South Canterbury Branch is still inviting registrations of interest for our next tour of the scenic West Coast. All Club vehicles eligible, though paced to suit older vehicles. Start and finish at any point. Format: Saturday 4 February: Check in, briefing, social evening at the Central Otago Branch Clubrooms at Cromwell.

Sunday 5 February: Participating vehicles start from Cromwell in own time.

Overnight stops: Haast, Fox Glacier, Hokitika, Westport and Hanmer Springs where the Final Dinner will be held.

Start times: Each day entrants can leave in own time.

Daily activities: The Tour Instructions will provide suggestions for places to visit en route or after arrival and Happy Hour venues.
