Printing Tips

Although you can print this magazine to A4 (either actual size or scaled to A4), this magazine has been set up in A5 format. This allows you to print 2 pages up on an A4 or even a booklet if your printer supports it.

If you open the magazine file in Acrobat Reader, and select file>print, under Page Size and Handling (see image below), you can print multiple pages per sheet. Click File>Print>Multiple>Pages per sheet> 2

If your printer supports printing both sides of the paper, you can also print a ‘Booklet’. Which allows you to print, then staple and fold up into an A5 magazine.

Chairman’s Report

Eric Foley

Chairman’s Report for March 2024

Well, there is no doubt that summer is drawing to a close. Mornings are getting quite cool and daylight-saving ends shortly. As I peck this message out, I can see the maples in our front yard turning brown. Another couple of months and we will be at our shortest day ! (Winter solstice 21st June).

However, we were fortunate enough to have a good day for our Country Roads Rally. The event went like clockwork – the organisation was excellent; the support personnel did a great job (despite two of them getting lost on their way to the lunch stop at Orakei Korako), and the hard work put in by Heather and Owen over an extended period of time certainly paid off. The Duncans had attended a rally in Wellington a couple of years ago, and some of what they observed down there was put into effect for us. The idea of concluding the day’s activities midafternoon was one of those ideas. It saved those from out of town the cost of an evening meal and a night’s accommodation. The feedback that Owen, Heather, and I received was very positive. After Covid and the absence of entries in 2023, the success of this event was very pleasing. The drivers and navigators of the 27

Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque APRIL 2024 7

vehicles entered had a really good day. Winners of the various categories received very good awards of car care products from Meguairs. Having been successful in our P60 category and having been the first to enter the rally, I doubt if I will need to buy car care products ever again.

The monthly events of breakfast at the Hub and Petrolheads went off as usual, with their regular group of attendees enjoying the occasion. The work put in by Barry and Owen to arrange these two events is appreciated by those who participate.

Club night this month was a quiet, but well organised affair primarily intended to prepare goodie bags for rally entrants. As a result of the earlier work done by Owen, Heather and Trish Poupard, the preparation was over in a flash and after about 30 minutes we sat down for a cuppa and a chat. It really was a very slick operation.

Before I move on to the item that is at the forefront of my mind at the moment, I would like to advise those that knew him that Laurie Tyler had passed away recently. Laurie was a teacher at Taupo-nui-a-Tia and owned a very nice British racing Green Daimler SP250. On retirement, Laurie and his wife retired to Orewa some years ago. During his time here, he was a very active member of our club. Our condolences go to his family.

It is now time to look to the future. Our AGM is on Wednesday, 8th May, about six weeks away. Please put that date in your diary. I have high hopes of a good attendance. It is your chance to have a say in how our club operates. You will shortly receive nomination forms for the various roles that need to be filled. We need to elect a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Club Captain, and a committee of 4 people. In addition, there are ex officio roles such as Editor, Librarian, Spares Supervisor, etc. I am also hoping that there is an agreement to continue the Events Committee. My view is that this group has been well organised and fulfils a very useful function. My thanks go to Murray and his team for their work.

See you on the 8th – for the meeting and a light supper to follow. Take care out there.

Eric

Country Roads Rally 2024

Finally - we got to run our national annual rally on Saturday, 16 March, after a couple of years of hiccups and after the pandemic. Unfortunately, there were a couple of late cancellations, but we still managed to have 25 cars participate on the day, which was amazing. It is nice to see the support given to the club and this event.

Many thanks to all the helpers who made this day a success, not only those who assisted on the day, but those who assisted behind the scenes leading up to the run and the knowledge imparted to us from the experts. It could not have eventuated without you all, so a big thank you from Owen and myself.

The run itself started on a very dreary drizzly day, and ran from the clubrooms around town, the marina, through

Wairakei and it’s steam fields and Aratiatia out to Broadlands to our morning tea stop at the Broadlands Hall. Gosh it’s amazing how small the silent checks looked from a vehicle. And without organising it we even had a bit of metal the same colour as the checks in the long grass which made it look like a check had fallen over! Tricky!

Our next stage took everyone out to Orakei Korako to the thermal valley on the Waikato River over back roads and one lane bridges. The venue offers discounted trips over to the valley by boat for $40.00 for Gold Card holders if anyone wants to go back there. They also have scrummy pizzas which we found while setting the route. The weather was most kind to us and fined up so everyone could enjoy a picnic lunch and chat.

These two stages saw the completion of the competitive sections. The third stage was a scenic drive which returned everyone to town via a private road which we obtained a permit for. It is very scenic and consists of forestry to open farmland. Some of the later cars had to give way to a herd of over 500 cows off to milking.

Our main sponsors for the event were Craig and Lynise Morrison of Taupo Brake and Clutch. Craig and his daughter also participated on the day and by all accounts had a great time and committed to continue their association with the club. We also had a number of other sponsors, including Meguiars who sent us first and second prizes for each section.

To all entrants, thank you once again for supporting the club. Owen and I take this opportunity to apologise now for a couple of tricky questions, but it makes it easier to find placings when the course questions were relatively easy. We hope you all had a fun day and enjoyed the countryside.

The committee is currently in the process of booking next year’s event and getting it listed on the national calendar. Set aside Saturday 15 March 2025 and get your cars ready.

Parts Shed

After a clean up of the Club’s Parts Shed we are now looking for anything suitable for a work bench that we can mount a small vice and bench grinder with a wire wheel on one end for cleaning. We are also interested in anything that we can make some more shelving for parts.

Remember when you are having a clean out of that back shed to keep the Club in mind, we just might be able to help you out.

Also always on the lookout for good used car parts thay are identifiable that we can on sell to other Club members and visitors.

Just give us a call and our team at the parts shed can arrange pickup.

Cheers, Tony Mannington.

The Cadillac Eldorado is a luxury car manufactured and marketed by Cadillac from 1952 until 2002 over twelve generations.

The Eldorado was at or near the top of the Cadillac line. The original 1953 Eldorado convertible and the Eldorado Brougham models of 1957–1960 had distinct bodyshells and were the most expensive models that Cadillac offered those years. The Eldorado was never less than second in price after the Cadillac Series 75 limousine until 1966. Starting in 1967 the Eldorado retained its premium position in the Cadillac price structure, but was manufactured in high volumes on a unique, two-door personal luxury car platform.
