From t he EDITORS

We Have Exciting News to Share! Our MoveGreen Golf Tournament which was held October 21st benefiting our Teacher’s Fund charity was a huge success. We were able to net over $47,000 for our local classrooms. The event was a huge success and people are still talking about how much they enjoyed every aspect of the day. These much needed funds will come in handy since the California government is looking to cut education again. Our agents are the backbone of our Company and they again came through for the Teacher’s Fund. On another note we as a company are also trying to support our local Community by buying local. It is easy to get on-line and do your Holiday shopping but we have found so many local opportunities and are sharing those with each other. We all feel that supporting our local merchants will benefit our beautiful city in so many ways.

Circulation & Subscriptions Kelly McClean

Locally, we are still working hard to bring Sellers and Buyers together for the good of both parties. Many of these sales are distressed sales, either a short sale or foreclosure sale, and making sure everyone is well informed with good communication is utmost on our minds. We realize how stressful these sales can be and we are definitely sensitive to those involved.

On a National level our National Association of Realtors President, Ronald Phipps, announced that continued efforts are in full force advocating for practical solutions in Washington DC to bring housing back into balance. He also said that this is a long-distance race, and we have a long way to go. That’s why NAR has shifted over ⅔ of their resources to this effort.

Making Your Home

a Sacred Sanctuary The happiest people in the world are those with abundant love in their lives and in their homes. After all, Spirit tells us it is how we love that brings us happiness. And, when we take care to make our home a haven or sanctuary, we create the ultimate healthy and loving retreat. I am not being flippant when I say such a space is a sanctuary for the soul – a sacred place. Sacredness can be found anywhere – in everyday architecture and in ordinary objects. The sacred can be a matter of perception, identified in the relationships between the many levels of its totality: mind, body, spirit, home, environment, community and cosmos. The warm, comfortable feelings of a home cannot be measured by

the amount of money spent on decoration and construction. Many an owner has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to build, furnish and decorate a home only for it to feel as artificial as a furniture store window and as personal as a hotel lobby. In contrast, natural and authentic materials, meaningful personal objects, adherence to the primary principles of Feng Shui and Vastu, a coat of paint in just-the-rightcolor, aromatherapy, or purposefully placed candles, can radiate a warmth and personality that leave even the simplest home alive with the feeling that all who live there are nurtured and enriched. There are multiple layers of meaning in our feelings of attachment to house and home. Joseph Campbell once said, “People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will resonate within our innermost being and reality, so that we can feel the rapture of being alive.” We seek the feelings of balance, love and contentment. Rapture infiltrates us when our life experience deeply resonates with

your innermost being and reality. By creating a home environment that is a sanctuary infused with loving, healthy and harmonious energies, we become deeply connected to our soul. These feelings provide balance, harmony and contentment, enabling us to experience, authentically, who we really are. Whether you live in a creek-side cabin, a modest apartment, a converted loft, or a stone manor house, you can discover elements, rituals, techniques and inspiration to help you create your own special sanctuary. With a harmonious haven that resonates with simple, natural, authentic, soul-evoking energy, can a deeply enriching, loving and authentic life be far behind? Start now by taking a spiritual journey through your home with the following list of elements and “imagine” the energies of sanctuary. Make notes, talk into a tape recorder, or take snapshots; do whatever it takes to get in touch with your imagination and your feelings. This need not be a structured exercise. To get in touch with these experiences, allow your thoughts and feelings to flow freely. This ‘record-keeping’ will help as you begin to create your own personal sanctuary.

Imagine . . . . . you CAN create your home as the ultimate sanctuary when you follow your heart, listen to your soul, and feel what deeply resonates within you. Shawn Mitchell Village Properties 805-689.4956 Shawn@SoulStyle.com www.SoulStyle.com www.ShawneMitchell.com

THE RESIDENCES

Situated on a high point with 360-degree panoramas, the roughly 7,000-square-foot main house has blended red-tile roofs, creamy stucco walls, and large windows, all in a traditional hacienda style. Wood-plank and Italiantravertine flooring and wood-beamed ceilings accent the living areas, which include a high-ceilinged foyer, handsome family and dining rooms, library, heated outdoor dining area, gymnasium, gourmet kitchen, and substantial great room overlooking the vineyard and mountains. The master suite looks out on glorious mountain vistas, while the guest wing comprises two additional bedrooms with full baths. Fannie, Freddie & Ginnie:

Who Are They?

by Tim Taylor

P

resident Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal established the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) in 1938 as a federal agency in the wake of the Great Depression. Its purpose was to bring liquidity, stability and affordability to the U.S. housing and mortgage markets. Congress converted Fannie in 1968 to a publicly held corporation to help balance the federal budget. To compete against Fannie Mae's domination of the secondary market and further lower housing costs, Congress chartered the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) as a public corporation in 1970. Freddie and Fannie have similar Congressional mandates, charters and regulatory structures. Both entities buy mortgages from lenders and package them into mortgage-backed securities that are sold to investors with a guarantee against default. This creates a secondary market, allowing mortgage lenders to use the freed-up funds to make more home loans. The Government National Mortgage Association (Ginnie Mae) was established by Congress in 1968. Unlike its GSE siblings, Ginnie does not purchase loans, but guarantees investors the timely payment of principal and interest on mortgagebacked securities containing federally insured loans — mainly FHA and VA loans. In September 2008, the U.S. government rescued Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from the brink of economic failure and placed them into conservatorship with the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). Some members of Congress have called for the gradual elimination of Fannie and Freddie to leave mortgage finance completely in the private sector. A Treasury Department report on the future of Fannie and Freddie will be delivered to Congress in the first half of February 2011. Firestone Walker Brewing Co.

Celebrating 15 years in 20

One of its best years ever

T

he brewery was named the Great American Mid-Sized Brewery of the Year in 2011 for an unprecedented third time, taking home six medals. They also took home awards at the European Beer Star Awards, Los Angeles International Beer Competition, the Australian International Beer Awards and several others. In all seven different Firestone beers won gold medals in competition this year and the brewery took home a total of 27 awards. “This year’s competition was the stiffest yet. There were more beers and breweries than ever before,” said co-owner David Walker of the Great American Beer Festival, which is the largest beer competition in the world. “I still am in a state of disbelief, but it’s very satisfying and a tribute to our brewers’ hard work.” Firestone Walker also launched two different beers for the very first time in 2011, Double Jack, which won gold at the European Beer Star Awards and silver at GABF and Abacus, which was named one of the 25 best new beers of 2011 by Draft Magazine. The brewery also released their latest anniversary ale, ‘XV’, in November. It is one of the most unique and highly anticipated beers in the craft beer world. XV is the culmination of intense blending sessions by local Paso Robles area winemakers to create a complex yet balanced ale. Eight beers were artfully blended together to create this masterpiece. “I really like what the winemakers bring to the process, they usually go for blends and flavor profiles that brewers never think of,” said Firestone Walker’s Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “That’s why I like bringing them in, it pushes the boundaries of our taste and that’s exciting.”

A number of events put on by the brewery grabbed the attention of beer fans across California. Oaktoberfest returned for its 7th year and was a hit once more attracting more than 2300 Firestone lovers to the Avila Beach Golf Resort for food, games, live music and of course beer. ‘From the Barrel’ was a first year event held this past April and it too was incredibly successful, selling out all of the space that was allowed at the historic Santa Margarita Ranch. The prohibition themed event brought together the best, bourbons, ports and barrel-aged beers and paired them with a stunning environment and fantastic food from the area’s top local chefs. Deconstructed LA was another first year event that married beer and food together. In eight courses, the Homebrew Chef, Sean Z. Paxton, explored the flavor profiles of all of the component beers that made up ‘XV’ at the Avalon Theatre in Hollywood. Firestone also underwent some renovations at their brewery in Paso Robles, adding more cold warehouse space, renovating their tasting room with a new bar and starting construction on their second restaurant, which is set to open on Valentines Day right next to the brewery. There is more to look forward to in 2012 than just the restaurant; Firestone will also be adding two more beers to their Proprietor’s Reserve Series of Beers. Double DBA and Wookey Jack will join the existing line-up of beers, which sees distribution all over the country. Wookey Jack, an 8.3 percent alcohol by volume, unfiltered black rye IPA, will be a yearround beer that will be released in mid-March. Wookey Jack will put a serious twist on the IPA theme weaving in jet-black dark malts, assertive citrusy hops and a spicy addition of rye malt. Consumers will see this beer in 22oz bottles and on draft wherever Firestone is currently sold.

r

011

r!

Double DBA, has been a part of the anniversary blend over the past three years and was originally brewed for that sole purpose. Now the Imperial Special Bitter will be released annually to the delight of beer fans that have been calling for it to leave the brewery. The 12 percent brew is aged in a variety of barrels including retired Firestone Union barrels and 20-year-old Bourbon barrels. This beer pays proud homage to the Firestone Walker flagship beer, DBA. It will be available in 22oz bottles and limited draft in select accounts beginning July 2012. “The Proprietor’s Reserve series allows us the opportunity as brewers to exercise our creativity and really push the limits of our brew kit and our raw materials.” Brynildson said. “Wookey Jack is our take on newly established ‘Black IPA’ style while also being our very first rye beer. DDBA is a familiar friend that we have been perfecting in our barrel-aging program over the past 3 years. We believe that both are ready to leave the nest in 2012.” Currently the Proprietor's Reserve Series consists of three oak aged beers and two year-round stainless steel releases. The year round releases are Double Jack Imperial IPA and Walker's Reserve Porter. On February 1st the beer formerly known as Abacus will return under the new name ‘§ucaba.' This Bourbon Barrel-aged Barley Wine will be the same great beer just with a new, more elusive name. Parabola, a Bourbon Barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout, will also return, it will be released in

mid-April. '16', Firestone's anniversary blend, will return next November to celebrate yet another year of brewing. “Looking back this has to be one of the most, if not the most, exciting years for Firestone Walker and we have no reason to think that next year is going to be any less hectic,” Walker said.
