VILLAGE OF BENSENVILLE NEW ICE AT THE EDGE ICE ARENA As hockey season approaches, construction on the East and West ice rinks at the Edge Ice Arena are nearing completion. This brand new equipment will drastically improve the ice quality while reducing energy costs for both rinks, improving the overall experience for skaters. This $2.56 million dollar project began March 31, 2017 and is scheduled for completion in early fall of 2017. As a result of failures in the underfloor warming system, the flooring of the rink was experiencing heaving. This heaving ultimately produced inconsistent height throughout the rink floor, resulting in uneven ice thickness and increasing the amount of energy needed to refrigerate the floor of the rink. A 2016 refrigeration systems assessment by Stantec Engineering concluded that, “The failed rink subsoil heating systems have created a serious operational issue for the facility that needs to be addressed and corrected soon” and that “further progression of both frost depth and surface heaving should be expected. The heaved floor surfaces provide undesirable skating conditions, increased energy use, and greater possibility of leaks in the floor coolant piping that could result in the untimely complete failure of the refrigerated floors.” To repair the arena floor system, construction crews removed frost and replaced the concrete floor and embedding system. The processes required 70 truckloads of concrete to fill the entire base of the rink. Also replaced were the 20 and 21 year old original evaporative condensers. The condensers surpassed their typical lifespan of 15 years, and were replaced with more efficient models. These renovations also required staff to update several safety codes making the entire facility safer. These updates include the addition of ammonia diffusion tanks, increased ventilation and ammonia sensor replacements. Completing this project allows the Edge Ice Arena to maintain its reputation as a reliable, safe and well maintained facility. In addition, it satisfies the demands of current tenants as well as attracts regional, national and international level events. The recent signing of four long term facility usage agreements helped in making this project possible. Village President Frank DeSimone shared his enthusiasm about the project saying, “I am personally very excited that one of the first major projects of my administration will be delivering the fastest ice in the Midwest. I believe this renovation will help put Bensenville on the map.” The Village is excited for the doors to be open and for everyone to continue experiencing high quality ice skating in Bensenville.
