SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 NOTHING BUT NET! District 2 to host 2018 SIT Conference on February 10.

ATTENTION STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND TEACHERS! Register now for the 2018 Students Involved with Technology (SIT) Conference!

This is the third consecutive year Bensenville School District 2 will host the DuPage County SIT Conference. This year’s conference, with its theme of Nothing but Net, will be held Saturday, February 10, from 8:30 am to 2 pm at Blackhawk Middle School, 250 South Church Road in Bensenville.

The SIT Conference is a technology conference unlike any other: hosted by kids, for kids. Students in Grades 3-12 present to their peers on the latest in technology: animation, MineCraft, Google, Spheros, 3D printing, Scratch, coding, Lego robotics, favorite apps, photo editing, drones, Makey Makey, web tools, and much, much more!.

Registration is $30 and closes Saturday, January 20. (Registration fees are waived for all District 2 staff sponsors and for presenters and participants who qualify for free/reduced-price meals.)

PRESENTERS NEEDED! Student presenters can share their tech knowledge with other students during 30-minute hands-on workshops or tech demonstrations. Students can present on their own or in teams of up to four students. All presenters must have an adult sponsor to accompany them throughout the day.

The Bensenville Arts Council, in conjunction with Fenton High School, is offering a hands-on community art experience.

The purpose of this project is to unite our community, provide wellness, and allow for positive expression through art.

Volunteers will be guided in the creating of a permanent sculpture to be installed outside the Fenton High School track and field. Three handcrafted ceramic totems, known as Welcome Poles, will be the final outcome.

Students, FHS staff, and community members of all ages are invited to join this free art experience. All sessions will take place in Fenton’s new 3-D art room on the last Thursday of each month.

HOUR OF CODE Tech activities put computer science center stage.

In celebration of Computer Science Education Week (December 4-8), students all across District 2 participated in Hour of Code activities.

Led by the District’s Instructional Technology Specialists, these activities explained to students the importance of coding in the creation of their favorite websites, apps, and software, exposed them to careers in computer science fields, and introduced them to the coding process through a variety of fun tutorials designed for different grade levels.

HELPING HANDS

BSD2 schools’ charitable fundraising efforts benefit those near and far.

This fall, students at W.A. Johnson School donated nearly $2,150 for hurricane relief efforts in Houston, Florida, and Puerto Rico, and the earthquake recovery effort in Mexico. They collected the money by holding a variety of charitable fundraisers.

For instance, on Hats for Houston Day, students who donated $1 could wear their favorite hat all day, and on Inside Out for Irma Day, students who donated $1 could come to school wearing their clothing inside out. Students also raised money by selling emoji bracelets and key chains and popular treats such as Takis for Texas and Fruit Snacks for Florida.

Additionally, Johnson students donated change toward the fundraising effort, with Grades K, 2, and 4 comprising Team Hurricane Irma and Grades 1, 3, and 5 forming Team Hurricane Harvey. The first team to collect enough donations to rebuild their houses displayed in the school’s Innovation Lab won a prize.

Also, at Tioga School, the Helping Heroes Club sold candy grams to help support the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, with the $511 they raised going to the American Red Cross.

ADOPT A SENIOR Over the past year, Blackhawk Middle School and W. A. Johnson School have teamed up to Adopt a Senior at the Bridgeway Senior Living community in Bensenville.

Last spring, W.A. Johnson School’s Service Club sold cookies on St. Patrick’s Day, and their fundraiser was so successful they sold out of cookies (and had to buy more) en route to exceeding their $400 goal by raising $464.

Then this September, Blackhawk Middle School held its first-ever Sixth Grade Mixer. With music, dancing, and concessions, the event provided the school’s newest students with opportunities to meet and make friends with classmates who attended a different elementary school last year. It also raised more than $475.

Each school donated the proceeds of these efforts to help pay for a Bridgeway senior resident’s living expenses for a year.

BETTER TO GIVE

Giving Tree and Coats for Families efforts help BSD2 families in need enjoy a warm and happy holiday season.

Thanks to the generosity of Bensenville School District 2 staff members, more than 200 students received gifts this holiday season through the District’s annual Giving Tree program.

Each fall, school social workers and classroom teachers work together to identify students from families that may not be able to afford gifts and invite them to anonymously share their children’s wish lists and clothing needs. Those lists are displayed on paper ornaments hung from Christmas trees in each school’s staff lounge, where staff members volunteer to choose different ornaments. They spend about $25 purchasing gifts from each list they select, and return their donations wrapped and ready to deliver to BSD2 families in need before Winter Break.

This year, every student who had an ornament on the tree received a gift through the Giving Tree program, as BSD2 staff combined to donate more than $5,000 to this charitable effort.

In addition to the Giving Tree program, dozens of children and adults will be able to stay warm this winter thanks to the Bensenville Rotary Club’s 16th Annual Coats for Families event. Held December 9 at W.A. Johnson School, the coat drive distributed new and gently used coats from the Bensenville community to local families in need. Thanks to fundraising efforts by the Rotary Club and District 2, the event gave away almost 400 coats to local children and adults in need.

Bensenville Rotary’s annual Coats for Families event was hosted through Operation Warm, a not-for-profit organization that has provided more than 2 million brand new winter coats to children in need, helping to improve their self esteem, peer acceptance, school attendance, and overall wellness. Each $20 donation purchased a new coat through Operation Warm, and many of the children who received those new coats rarely feel the emotion associated with receiving something brand new that no one ever owned before. INTERIM FLY QUIET ROTATION PLAN On Friday, December 8, 2017 the full O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) voted to adopt an Interim Fly Quiet Rotation Plan for the next two to two and a half years.

The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) presented three runway rotation options to the committee including Option (A) which was recommended by the AD Hoc Fly Quiet Committee in November. The goals of the Fly Quiet Rotation Plan include providing near term relief, reducing impacts to the highest impacted communities, and to provide predictability to the extent possible. Based on the Fly Quiet Runway Rotation Test goal to avoid consecutive impacts, Option (A) was the only remaining option that did not include consecutive impacts.

Option (A) features an 8 week rotation plan with six configurations alternating each week between parallel and diagonal runways while rotating east flow and west flow.

Based on test results from 1, 2, and 3, Option (A) is estimated to have 74% operations on parallel runways and 26% of operations on diagonal runways, not taking into account future construction and maintenance schedules.

Village Manager Evan Summers and Village President Frank DeSimone were a driving force behind the vote to approve option (A). Evan Summers often made his voice heard at ONCC meetings leading up to the December 8th vote, consistently sharing his input and advocating for residents in Bensenville. They also worked closely with private aviation consultants as well as surrounding communities to ensure a fair vote at the full ONCC meeting in December. “Option (A) provides predictability and the most relief from nighttime noise by spreading the flights as evenly as possible,” said Village President Frank DeSimone.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will now begin an environmental analysis on the proposed rotation plan.

Once their analysis is complete and approved, the fly quiet rotation plan will be implemented at O’Hare during the fly quiet hours of 10pm-7am.

BENSENVILLE COMMUNITY RALLIES TOGETHER TO RAISE FUNDS FOR VICTIMS OF APARTMENT FIRE Village President Frank DeSimone presented a donation on behalf of the Bensenville Community Foundation to the victims of a tragic apartment fire that took place on November 19. Frank DeSimone initiated the fundraiser Neighbors Helping Neighbors in an effort to support the families affected by this tragic incident.

The fire claimed the life of one and displaced 17 families in Bensenville. The raging fire swept through the three story apartment building, destroying the roof and several apartment units. The community rallied together and raised over $13,000 to help the families affected. Donations were evenly distributed to help each family.

The Village thanks everyone who donated, especially the Roesch family and ABC Bank for their generous donations.

“I am extremely proud of the entire community for coming together to help their neighbors in need,” said Village President Frank DeSimone.

HELP KEEP SNOW OFF THE STREETS Permission for overnight parking on Village streets will not be granted after a snowfall of two inches (2”) or more. In order to ensure effective plowing and salting operations it is imperative vehicles are not parked on Village streets or in alleys. Alley parking is prohibited at any time. Please do not park or keep a vehicle on public streets after a (2”) or more snowfall for twenty four (24) hours, or until the streets have been cleared of snow. Vehicles in violation will be ticketed and towed. Snow plowing or dumping snow from sidewalks and driveways onto the public streets or public alleyways is prohibited.

SPREADING OUR WINGS WITH SWAN You may have heard the exciting news: The Library is joining SWAN (System Wide Automated Network)! This means we’ll be part of a larger library consortium in northern Illinois, expanding from twelve libraries to 97! Our membership begins in May 2018.

FENTON STUDENTS PRESENT AT IETC 2017 The 24th Annual Illinois Education & Technology Conference is a three-day professional development conference focused on technology integration strategies, engaging instructional practices, digital tools and resources, and emerging trends for teachers, administrators, and technology staff. Learn, explore and connect with other innovative educators to harness the power of technology and prepare future-ready students. More than 700 PreK-12 teachers, administrators and technology coordinators Teacher Lauren Lemm and Fenton Students Jamie Minard, Natalie Hernandez and Trisha Butz participated in IETC in Springfield in November. The students built mini solar panels which charge cellphones and eventually Chromebooks. They hope that one day they can expand to charge the Chromebooks in the library or student center.

HOARDING: Issues for the Fire Service Many fire departments are experiencing serious fires, injuries, and deaths as the result of compulsive hoarding behavior. The excessive accumulation of materials in homes poses a significant threat to firefighters fighting fires and responding to other emergencies in these homes and to residents and neighbors.

Often, the local fire department will be contacted to help deal with this serious issue. Since studies suggest that between three and five percent of the population are compulsive hoarders, fire departments must become familiar with this issue and how to effectively handle it.

What is hoarding?

Why do people become hoarders?

• Collecting or keeping large amounts of various items in the home due to strong urges to save them or distress experienced when discarding them.

Hoarding is a mental disorder that can be genetic in nature, triggered by traumatic events, or a symptom of another disorder, such as depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, or dementia. Studies have found that hoarding usually begins in early adolescence and gets worse as a person ages. It is more common among older adults.

• Many rooms in the home are so filled with possessions that residents can no longer use the rooms as designed.

• The home is so overloaded with things that everyday living is compromised.

Why is hoarding an issue for the fire service?

• Hoarding can be a fire hazard. Many occupants die in fires in these homes. Often, blocked exits prevent escape from the home. In addition, many people who are hoarding are injured when they trip over things or when materials fall on them.

• Responding firefighters can be put at risk due to obstructed exits, falling objects, and excessive fire loading that can lead to collapse. Hoarding makes fighting fires and searching for occupants far more difficult.

• Those living adjacent to an occupied structure can be quickly affected when a fire occurs, due to excessive smoke and fire conditions.

In some communities, officials are asking landlords and property owners to inform the local fire service or building commissioner or inspector when they become aware of a hoarding situation that poses a fire safety risk to the occupant or neighbors.
