The Park District Winter/Spring 2019 Program Guide is full of new and returning classes, programs and events that are available to you and your family this Winter and Spring. We have classes and programs for both youth and adults alike. Teach Me Sports, offers your little ones the opportunity to learn the basics of a variety of sports while learning teamwork and sportsmanship. This season is recital season for our School of Dance and Movement, participants will get the chance to showcase their moves and what they have learned this season on stage. Our active adults have all sorts of trips which are open to them both near and far.

HOPE DUPAGE: Resources, Prevention, and Education DuPage County, like many communities across the United States, is facing an opioid epidemic that has cut short the lives of too many of our residents. Most people who develop an addiction to opioids begin with legitimate use of opioids, which then develops into misuse of opioids.

In order to help protect yourself and family members from the misuse of prescription drugs, remove any expired, unwanted, or unused medications from your home and learn how to safely dispose of them.

There are several drug take back locations throughout DuPage County where you can safely dispose of medications. Bensenville residents can take steps to reduce the opioid epidemic by safely disposing of their medications at the Bensenville Police Department’s RxBox, located at 345 E Green Street, Bensenville, IL 60106.

The Heroin/Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce is a joint operation of the DuPage County Board and the DuPage County Board of Health. The HOPE DuPage website was launched in August 2018 to provide the community with information about opioid misuse, how to prevent it, and provide community support and resources.

Visit hopedupage.org to view various resources, including safe drug disposal sites across DuPage, how to talk to your doctor about pain and safe prescribing, how to recognize and respond to an overdose, and

treatment and recovery resources.

SMALL GROUP TRAINING CLASSES Tuesdays | 6-7 pm Group training gives a more focused, individualized workout in a small group setting. You can expect to see changes in exercise routines that will keep your workouts interesting, challenging and dynamic. Workouts will include using weights and other functional strength training equipment. Classes are held in the Deer Grove Leisure Center’s Exercise Room and are complimentary for those with Fitness Center + Classes Membership, $6 for daily resident fee, or fitness punch pass. YOUTH SOCCER TRAINING The Youth Soccer Training Program is designed for players ages 4 through 14 who are looking to learn the basics and fundamentals of soccer. Participants work on fitness, foot skills, and basic tactical movement. Winter and Spring sessions are available. Registration is currently underway; register your child early for space is limited. OAK ROOM The Oak Room is an active adult drop-in center at the Deer Grove Leisure Center and offers use of a TV, card tables, cards, puzzles, board games and books. Open drop-in is available anytime the Oak Room is not in scheduled use. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-10pm and Saturdays and Sundays, 9am-5pm.

Fenton Community High School District 100 congratulates Mr. Paul Wedemann, Board of Education President, as Level I of the Master Board Member Program. Mr. Wedemann was recognized at the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) Fall Division Meeting.

To be recognized at this level a board member must earn at least 60 points through participation in professional development opportunities through the IASB. Master Board Member points are earned by attending IASB division meetings, governing meetings, legislative leadership programs as well as holding positions of leadership within the Association. Upon receiving the recognition, he stated, “I am honored to receive this recognition from IASB on behalf of Fenton High School. This has truly been a rewarding experience to work with the Board and Fenton staff to effect positive changes contributing to the success of Fenton High School students. We will continue to strive for educational excellence for each of our students.”

Mr. Wedemann and his family have been Bensenville residents since 1994, and both of his children are Fenton graduates. Mr. Wedemann was elected to the Fenton Community High School District 100 Board of Education in April 2015. During his tenure on the Board, the District has accomplished the following:

FENTON RECOGNIZED ON COLLEGE BOARD’S 9TH ANNUAL AP® DISTRICT HONOR ROLL Fenton District 100 is one of 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 9th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. To be included on the 9th Annual Honor Roll, Fenton had to, since 2016, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP.

“This recognition is for our students, parents, teachers, staff, and community who embraced this journey which started approximately four years ago. We deliberately changed our Advanced Placement program by having the mindset of equity access and inclusiveness, and this recognition is the fruition of this on-going and challenging work,” says James Ongtengco, Superintendent.

FENTON STATE REPORT CARD 2018 | Commendable School The Illinois State Board of Education released our annual School Report Card on October 31, 2018. This Report Card shows how well school are progressing on a wide range of educational indicators. It includes information about academic growth and achievement, student and teacher demographics, enrollment, and district-level financial information. A few of Fenton’s academic indicators include a graduation rate which is at 93%, and 9th grade on track to graduate on time which is at 92%. These indicators have continued to improve over the past five years.

Over the next five years, Bensenville schools will receive $3 million to fund critical community schools initiatives through the Illinois State Board of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants program. Fenton Receives Illinois Library Grant to expand Digital Library Fenton Librarian Steven Smidl applied for the State of Illinois Library Grant and was awarded $1,104.75 to provide supplemental support for the library program to enhance student learning and academics. Mr. Smidl stated, “Since we do not have a large collection of digital books, I am trying to build that collection through our cooperative of shared resources through eRead Illinois. The money will be allocated towards new audiobooks that service underdeveloped readers.” He is excited to use these funds to expand the library. This is the 3rd consecutive year Fenton has been awarded this grant under Mr. Smidl.

VILLAGE RESPONDS TO NOVEMBER WINTER STORM On November 25, 2018, Chicagoland was hit with the first major winter storm of the season. Bensenville received over 8.5 inches in some areas. Village crews promptly responded with 17 crew members to clear the streets. The Village used a total of 220 man-hours, 487 gallons of liquid (Beet Heat / Brine mix) and 99.95 tons of salt. Crews plowed 107 miles of roadway and 5.73 miles of alleyways. In Addition, the Village continually communicated with ComEd regarding the affected outages within the Village. Once it was determined that some outages were going to be extended, the Village provided residents with an opportunity to utilize a 24-hour warming center with the CodeRed alert system. “The Village of Bensenville is

proud to have served every resident that came to the warming center,” said Village President Frank DeSimone.

Permission for overnight parking on Village streets will not be granted after a snowfall of two inches (2”) or more. In order to ensure effective plowing and salting operations, it is imperative vehicles are not parked on Village streets or in alleys. Alley parking is prohibited at any time. Please do not park or keep a vehicle on public streets after a (2”) or more snowfall for twenty four (24) hours, or until the streets have been cleared of snow.

WELCOME NEW POLICE CHIEF DAN SCHULZE

Warming Centers

Chief Dan Schulze has been selected by the Village of Bensenville to lead the Police Department into the next chapter after the retirement of former Chief Frank Kosman.

Chief Schulze is a professional law enforcement officer with over thirty years of experience in all ranks and divisions including ten years as Commander of the regional Major Crimes Taskforce. He served as President of the Fraternal Order of Police lodge and understands the challenges police officers face from both a labor as well as a management perspective. He approaches this new challenge with both confidence and humility: confidence that he has the ability to apply his experience, and humility in knowing the police officers of Bensenville have knowledge and experience to bring to the table as well.

Shortly after the 1993 Browns Chicken murders in Palatine, Illinois, the consensus was reached that municipal police lacked the means to conduct long-term complex investigations such as homicides. The solution was to form a taskforce consisting of the best detectives from multiple jurisdictions to pool their resources and share information to combat this problem. Chief Schulze was ultimately chosen by the chiefs of the twenty-one towns that comprised the taskforce to be one of its leaders. Shortly after inception, he was chosen for the director’s position and commanded the taskforce for over 10 years supervising over fifty homicide investigations.

He believes policing in a modern society involves embracing the community. Since coming to Bensenville he has met the majority of the Police Officers as well as some of the Firefighters, Village employees, and residents and is very impressed with the spirt of cooperation between the various Village departments. Chief Schulze appreciates the Village’s warm welcome and looks forward to meeting the residents and serving the community.

CP HOLIDAY TRAIN MAKES FIRST EVER STOP IN BENSENVILLE For the first time, on Thursday, December 6, 2018, approximately 400 attendees welcomed the CP Rail Holiday Train as it pulled into Bensenville at the corner of South York Road and Railroad Avenue. This was the first time that Bensenville had been selected as a stop and was one of only two stops in Illinois. The CP Rail Holiday Train serves as a way to raise awareness of local hunger issues and encouraged attendees to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to benefit the food pantry.

Currently staff is raising money to assist a student in North DuPage Special Education Cooperative’s (NDSEC) Transition Program in completing a college class. The Transition Program is committed to the development and enhancement of independent living skills of students as they transition from school to adult life. The Transition Program serves students with moderate to severe disabilities who are between the ages of 18 -22 years old (after completing 4 years of high school) as they prepare to be contributing members of a community.

Independence and life skills are the primary objectives of this program.

This is the fourth consecutive year Bensenville School District 2 will host the SIT Conference. This year’s conference, with its theme of Ready, SIT, Go! will be held Saturday, February 9, from 8:30 am to 2 pm at Blackhawk Middle School, 250 South Church Road in Bensenville. Registration is $30 and closes Wednesday, January 23. (Registration fees are waived for all District 2 staff and student presenters. Student fee waivers are also available.)

GROWING UP!

District 2’s student growth scores in math rank among DuPage County’s best.

Illinois School Report Cards listed growth scores measuring student progress from one year to the next for the first time this year, and District 2’s 57.5 percent growth score ranked among DuPage County’s best.

Dr. Kay Dugan, Assistant Superintendent for Learning, attributes much of this success to two initiatives: • K-5 Professional Development for Math Instruction: The increased rigor of the state’s math standards has required K-5 teachers to incorporate a wide variety of new problem-solving strategies into their instruction. This professional development, which has been led for the past several years by our two K-5 math specialists — Angela Adams and Kristi Mullen — has helped our teachers deliver their math instruction with the same confidence that they approach literacy, which is often the strength of teachers at these grade levels.

• Increased Rigor of Eighth-Grade Math Curriculum: To provide our students with a better transition from middle school with us to high school at Fenton, our team of eighth-grade math teachers at Blackhawk — Joe Hanley, Loren Martell, and Erika McKenna — has worked incredibly hard over the past three years to increase the rigor of their instruction. In particular, their focus on incorporating more geometry into the curriculum has paid off given that the Illinois Grade 8 Math Standards have a significant emphasis on geometry competencies.

The Illinois State Board of Education annually releases school report cards that show how each school, each district, and the state is performing on a wide range of educational goals. The report cards contain information about student academic growth and achievement, student and teacher demographics, enrollment, district-level financial information, and information from the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.

SING IT!

Johnson and Tioga students team up with Nashville hitmaker to write and perform their own songs.

This fall, hit Nashville singer/songwriter Steve Seskin returned to District 2 to team up with fourth and fifth graders at W.A. Johnson and Tioga Schools.

Together, they wrote and performed two news songs to add to the growing catalog of tunes written by District 2 students with Mr. Seskin’s assistance.

At Johnson, they wrote and performed Rise and Shine, which will serve as the theme song for the District’s new RISE Academies. At Tioga, they wrote and performed Learning and Leading.

This is the fourth year Mr. Seskin has visited District 2. The goal of his student song writing program is to instill a love of creative expression, and to help students create their own songs that speak to issues that affect their school community, such as bullying, respect, peer pressure, diversity, and self-esteem.

“When students write their own song, they’re more apt to live by the words and quietly convince other students to do the same,” said Mr. Seskin.

To date, District 2 students have written eight songs with Mr. Seskin, including this year’s District 2 theme song, I Belong. Mr. Seskin will now take these two newest tunes to Nashville, where they, too, will be recorded by professional singers and musicians for release this spring.

BETTER TO GIVE

More than 185 students received gifts this holiday season through BSD2 staff’s annual Giving Tree program.

Each fall, school social workers and classroom teachers work together to identify students from families that may not be able to afford gifts and invite them to anonymously share their children’s wish lists and clothing needs. Those lists are displayed on paper ornaments hung from Christmas trees in each school’s staff lounge, where staff members volunteer to choose different ornaments. They spend about $25 purchasing gifts from each list they select, and return their donations wrapped and ready to deliver to BSD2 families in need before Winter Break.

This year, every student who had an ornament on the tree received a gift through the Giving Tree program, as BSD2 staff generously combined to donate more than $4,700 to this charitable effort.

Winter storms can happen almost anywhere. They can cause us problems.

Know what to do before, during and after a storm. This will help keep you and your family safe from a winter fire.

KKK Test all smoke alarms. Do this at least once a month.

This way you will know they are working. Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Test the alarms.

KKK Plan two ways out of the home in case of an emergency.

Clear driveway and front walk of ice and snow. This will provide easy access to your home.

KKK Make sure your house number can be seen from the street. If you need help, firefighters will be able to find you.

KKK Be ready in case the power goes out. Have flashlights on hand. Also have battery-powered lighting and fresh batteries. Never use candles.
