Census Day 2020: Be Counted!

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1 4:00 – 7:00 PM BENSENVILLE LIBRARY MUSICAL PERFORMANCE BY CIELITO LINDO AT 5:30 PM 2020 is a census year! Join us for a Census Day celebration on Wednesday, April 1 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm — we’ll have computers to access the census questionnaire, giveaways, food, kids crafts, an appearance by Uncle Sam, and a musical performance by family folk band, Cielito Lindo!

BILINGUAL & BILITERATE District 2 is proud to offer families a new program choice that will give students the opportunity to learn in both English and Spanish.

The District’s new two-way dual language program will begin next year at kindergarten and expand each year through fifth grade.

The program will blend native English and Spanish speaking students in the same classroom, where they will spend portions of the day learning in both languages from teachers using curriculum units that have been carefully planned with biliteracy objectives in mind.

“The goal of the program is to reach high levels of academic achievement, bilingualism, and biliteracy in a safe, engaging learning environment,” said Dr. Kay Dugan, Assistant Superintendent for Learning. “It is designed to teach students a second language in a natural way through subject content instruction and everyday classroom conversation.”

Within the two-way dual language program,

kindergartners will spend 80 percent of their instructional day learning in Spanish, and 20 percent in English. As they progress through the program, that 80/20 allocation will gradually shift to a 50/50 ratio.

Participation in the new two-way dual language program is optional.

Parents of incoming kindergartners will still be able to enroll their children in traditional kindergarten classes, or in the District’s existing bilingual program if their children qualify for those services.

Enrollment in the new two-way dual language program will be based on the number of applications received during the kindergarten registration process, and will be limited to the number of students the program can effectively accommodate.

On April 1, Census Day will be observed nationwide. By this date, every home will have received an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. In partnership with the Village of Bensenville and funded by a grant through the Illinois Department of Human Services, via Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) and The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus (MMC), we want to celebrate Census Day with our community and let you know why the census matters. Be counted! When we all respond, we all benefit. When everyone is counted in the 2020 Census, our communities get the funding they need for things like health care, education, emergency services, and more.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

BSD2 Superintendent to be honored with Project HELP’s first Outstanding Leader Award.

Incoming kindergarten students will be able to register for the 2020-21 school year on Tuesday, March 10, from 3-7 p.m. at either Tioga School, 212 W. Memorial Road, or W.A. Johnson School, 252 Ridgewood Avenue.

Students will need to register at their home school, so parents who are unsure which school their child will attend should call the Educational Administration Center at 630-766-5940.

Parents also need to bring their child to kindergarten registration so the student can be assessed for kindergarten.

On May 6, Project HELP will present its first Outstanding Leader Award to Dr. James Stelter, Bensenville School District 2 Superintendent of Schools, during its Fifth Annual Community Begins at Home Breakfast. Dr. Stelter will be honored for making effective change, for his significant contributions to the community, and for his investment in strengthening families.

Registration requirements are as follows: • Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2020 • A certified copy of an Original Birth Certificate • Proof of Residency—Lease/mortgage, current driver’s license/photo identification, and 3 additional proofs of residency will be required at the time of registration.

DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS Bensenville School District 2 will be conducting developmental screenings for 3- and 4-year-old children at Tioga School on Thursday, April 23, and Friday, April 24. (There will be no pre-kindergarten classes on those days.)

These screenings are the first step in identifying children for our Preschool for All program and/or Head Start.

SMART SUMMER FUN! District 2’s STEM camps and JumpStart program will offer exciting learning opportunities for students this summer.

Registration forms will be available Wednesday, April 1, in schools’ front offices, and must be submitted – along with a $25 nonrefundable registration fee – by Friday, April 24. Space in each program is limited, and seats will go fast!

BENSENVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS ACCREDITATION After many months of preparation, the Village of Bensenville’s Police Department was officially awarded a prestigious accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This accreditation is nationally recognized as a gold standard in public safety and recognizes the high level of policing offered by the Bensenville Police Department.

“I commend the Bensenville Police Department for their hard work to earn this accreditation through CALEA. It is an honor for the department to achieve this accreditation and is another demonstration of the high level of professionalism provided by our officers,” said Village President Frank DeSimone.

With less than 5% of law enforcement agencies achieving accreditation, it serves as a strong foundation to assist the Bensenville Police Department in attaining the high level of professional service it provides to the community. The Bensenville Police Department stands amongst the few departments in the state of Illinois to attain dual accreditation demonstrating an ability to comply with the best practices of law enforcement at both a state and national level.

SPRING INTO ACTION! Be Prepared with the CodeRED Alert System The Village of Bensenville uses CodeRED as one way to alert residents and businesses of emergency situations and to provide up to date information.

This system uses a database of phone numbers including land lines and cell phone numbers.

Multiple numbers can be submitted for each person or business.

A CodeRED message will have the caller ID # 866.419.5000 for emergencies. We suggest that you program this number into your cell phone as a new contact and use CodeRED as the contact name. If you miss a message, you can dial this number and listen to the message again in its entirety. To sign up for the CodeRED system, go to the Village Website Home Page and click the CodeRed Alert System icon. The highlighted link will take you to the enrollment page.

Parking on the grass or gravel is not permitted. No inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicle shall be parked, kept or stored on any premises. Motor vehicles owned by village residents require a village sticker.

Garbage and yard waste containers can be put to the curb or alley no earlier than 12 hours prior to pickup and must be removed no later than 12 hours after pickup. Electronic devices including TVs and computer electronics shall not be placed at the curb for disposal. Contact your local recycling center for disposal.

Brush Pick-up & Maintenance of Parkway Trees Republic Services collects brush April through November. Individual branches less than three feet in length and one inch in diameter on your regular trash collection day from your regular collection point. Village Crews collect larger brush on the first Monday of each month from April through November. Parkway trees are maintained as part of the Village’s Urban Forest Tree Preservation & Protection Plan. If a parkway tree appears damaged or in need of pruning, contact Public Works at 630-350-3435.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day provides the perfect opportunity to clean out your cabinets and safely remove any old, unused prescription medications. Discarding your old medications safely will help insure that they will not find their way into the wrong hands.

In order to reduce the amount of unused and expired medications in the household and dispose of them safely, residents may bring their medication to the Bensenville Police Department located at 345 E Green Street. The prescription drug drop-off box is located in the lobby and is available year round. Regular business hours are 8am – 5pm Monday-Friday.

DISPOSING INSTRUCTIONS • Bring household medication including over-the-counter, prescription medications, ointment and liquid medications, asthma inhalers that are expired or no longer wanted.

• Empty pill containers directly into a zipper top plastic bag to protect your personal information.

• For spill-free disposal place liquid medication in a zipper top plastic bag.

• Deposit your medications in the collection container marked RxBox in the law enforcement facility.

2020 VILLAGE BRUSH AND BRANCH PICK-UP

DO NOT BUNDLE BRUSH OR BRANCHES REPUBLIC SERVICES collects April through November: individual branches less than three feet in length and one inch in diameter on your regular trash collection day from your regular collection point. Place in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans with two Yard Waste Only labels attached. Yard Waste Only stickers can be picked up for free at the Village Hall. Republic Services collects these branches with other residential yard waste.

To discard root balls, break them up into small enough pieces to fit into your trash container for Republic Services to collect.

VILLAGE CREWS collect larger brush on the first full week of each month from April through November with the following regulations.

• Brush may be placed on the parkway for collection beginning the Friday before the scheduled collection week, but no later than 7:00 am on the first Monday of each month.

• Each street receives a single collection during a scheduled week; placing brush or branches out after the deadline can result in a citation and no pickup.

• Piles should be placed on street side of property NOT in the alleys.

• Place cut ends of brush and branches towards the street without root systems.

• Individual branches must not exceed eight inches (8”) in diameter.

• Items larger than eight inches (8”) in diameter, materials such as construction wood, branches with nails or spikes, wooden fence pieces, rose branches, poison ivy and grass clippings/rakings cannot be mulched and must be disposed of by the resident through other means.

• Brush collection is for single family residences only.

• Contractor generated brush will NOT be collected.

• NO bundling of piles with rope or wire.

• Branches smaller than three feet (3’) in length and one inch (1”) in diameter should be placed in bio-degradable bags or cans labeled yard waste only for pickup by Republic.

FREE MULCH PROGRAM Beginning in April, the Village of Bensenville will offer FREE recycled triple ground mulch to incorporated Bensenville residents. This opportunity is the result of in town brush pickups, tree trimmings and tree removals. This is one of Bensenville’s environmental initiatives to recycle our material and reinvest back into the community. Mulch is available 7 days a week at the Public Works Facility parking lot at 717 E. Jefferson Street (right across the Redmond Recreational Complex) and is accessible at the NE corner in a concrete bin for residents to help themselves. Residents are responsible for loading their own mulch, containers, shovels and their own transportation. The property is under surveillance – please be respectful of other residents and the Public Works Facility.

Spring Storm Preparedness

The National Weather Service designates the first full week in March as Severe Weather Preparedness Week. This is the time to review severe weather (i.e. tornado) preparedness, review the difference between a watch and warning and review when watch or warnings can be issued. Take the time to review what steps you can take to protect yourself and loved ones by designating where the best place to go for safety is located. This event includes a pancake, tater tots, sausage, and egg breakfast, a photo-op with the Easter Bunny, as well as other crafts and activities. Buses will also be available for transportation to and from the breakfast, bus route information will be available one week from event. Registration is not required, but space is limited. It is not a secret that parent participation in school improves academic and behavioral outcomes. For example, research has found that parent involvement is related to a host of student achievement indicators including better grades, attendance, graduation rate, attitudes, expectations, homework completion, and state tests. In addition to academic outcomes, we want Fenton parents to be involved because it is the right thing to do and, as a parent of six children speaking, your students want you to be involved.

Fenton’s partnership with parents contributed to many of our first semester accomplishments, which can be seen in the adjacent text box. We invite parents to help us build our next list of accomplishments.

At Fenton, there are many ways parents can be involved. This includes, but is not limited to, attending our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), Padres Unidos, Przyjaciele Fenton, Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC), Athletic Boosters, and Music Boosters. Each of these groups are unique.

Another way parents can be involved is by simply attending events and showing support for the clubs and athletic teams your student is passionate about. Seeing a familiar face can go a long way. Parent-Teacher Conferences are a great way to keep in touch with your teachers and stay apprised of classroom expectations.

Parents can take little steps while at home, such as logging into PowerSchool to monitor grades and email teachers.

We understand that parents are busy and have other obligations that might prevent you from being as involved as you might like. Being a parent is not easy. You’re not in it alone: Fenton is a community. Others who attend Fenton’s parent groups can relate and might have good ideas to share.

Parents are one of the pillars that support a school district, and our most valuable resources are our children. Thank you for your partnership and we look forward to seeing you often.

Special Olympics Basketball Team Takes Second in Region Fenton’s Special Olympics basketball team charged through its regional schedule and on Sunday afternoon made it to the championship game of the state qualifier tournament.

They fell a few points behind and took second place. Fenton is extremely proud to have the second best team in the region.

Coach Simon Sanchez praised his players for their hard work and patience. He also thanked the parents, fans, and school staff who supported the team this season. During its Pack the Place home game in December, Fenton’s Special Olympics basketball team and Interact Club raised more than $750 for Special Olympics through ticket sales, raffles, and shirt sales.

Fenton High School’s Theater Department presents Sister Act for its annual Spring Musical this April. The show is based on the hit 1992 movie staring Whoopi Goldberg. The plot revolves around a diva singer who’s put into witness protection after witnessing a crime. Where do police hide her? In a convent!

“We picked the show to contrast shows we have done in the past, and thought it would be a good opportunity to highlight the talented musicians and actors we have,” said Mrs. Seredy Williams, co-vocal director.

Show dates are scheduled for April 16, 17 and 18. Senior Citizens are invited to enjoy a free lunch at noon leading up to a free seniors matinee show at 1 pm on April 18. FENTON FACES RECOGNIZES POSITIVE STUDENT CHARACTER We had our Fenton Faces breakfast this January in the Academic Resource Center (ARC). Teachers wrote a paragraph explaining their nominees’ positive contributions to class or positive influences upon classmates. Those nominations were then sent to Principal Jovan Lazarevic throughout the semester. The selected students and their parents arrived at school early to have breakfast with their teachers and hear their nominating paragraph read aloud in front of the group.

ILLINOIS NAMES 27 STATE SCHOLARS FROM FENTON

CHESS ALUMS RETURN AND PLAY IN LEGENDS MATCH

Principal Jovan Lazarevic was notified in January that 27 Fenton students were selected for recognition by the State Scholar Program because of their outstanding academic achievements. Students are selected based on their standardized test scores and their cumulative GPA after their second semester of their junior year.

Alumni of Fenton’s chess team visited campus on in January to square off against current Bison in our fifth annual Legends Match. The pawns, knights, bishops and royalty were flying across the boards. Mr. Frank Kekstadt, Fenton’s previous chess coach, was on hand to support the Legends, while Ms. Stephanie Downen and Ms. Shelly Bibel coached the current students.

FOOTBALL INSPIRES AND LEADS STUDENTS TO SUCCESS Fenton running back Andre Bess (#2) can’t imagine his life without football. The senior, who also runs track for the Bison, is in talks with Benedictine University following a stellar year on the football field.

“Being on the football team has been a real blessing,” Bess said. “It’s not just the football, it’s the people I’m with.

My teammates and coaches influenced who I am as a person. They’re always there for me.”

Bess compiled 1,102 rushing yards on 221 attempts and smashed into the endzone 13 times. He also caught 11 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Because of those stats, Bess will play in the Illinois High School Shrine All Star Football Game on June 20 in downstate Bloomington. The charity game is organized in partnership between the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children and the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

The success stories continue off the field as well. Eleven Bison were recognized by the Upstate Eight Conference for academic successes. Quarterback Nick Benn and lineman Eric Moreno were later named to the Class 6A Academic All-State Team by the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association. “My grades are usually better during football season,” Benn said. “I end up having limited time and more incentive because of our coach’s expectations.”

Moreno said football brought him a lot of quality friends who band together for topics both on and off the field.

“That drive for football, it applies to school, too,” Moreno said. “Coach has taught us a lot about respecting ourselves and others, and finding your drive, your reason for whatever it is you’re doing.”

Fenton Celebrates and Explores Innovative Hour of Code Activities Students explored writing code and creating custom projects with robotics during the annual Hour of Code activities.

Hour of Code celebrates advancements in the computer science industry and showcases opportunities students can join right away or aspire toward. Fenton’s week-long celebration was organized by Mr. Mike Berago, Mr. Mike Baker, Mr. Brian Agustin, Mrs. Sara Pahl, and Mrs. Elizabeth Wright (plus many others who welcomed activities into their classrooms).

Mr. Berago said Hour of Code teaches critical thinking skills, introduces students to career opportunities they might be passionate about, and he said some colleges are starting to require introductory computer science coursework as a prerequisite for admission.

Several programmers, including a few alumni, visited campus or participated in video conferences to share their experiences and take questions from students. Other activities included programing spheres (little plastic balls) to navigate an obstacle course, writing basic code for short video games, writing short code that creates large animated names for websites, among others.

In the library, Mrs. Wright helped students write and record a short script about a book they read, and then program a mother board to play the audio upon completing a circuit.

Students then connected the mother board to a speaker and a piece of fruit decorated like the character. When guests touched the decorated fruit, the recorded script began playing aloud.
