Our main focus for 2015 was to challenge all of our employees to add more value from each of their departments for our members. Based on the feedback we have received from you through our on-going Medallia surveys, we have added more group exercise classes in the evenings to accommodate our working members. We have increased the number of programs for our junior members at all of the clubs. This year all of the spin studios were upgraded to provide a fresh, motivational environment. New fitness and cardio equipment was added to all of the Village clubs.

In April, 2015, we opened our fourth Village club, the Ocotillo Village Health Club and Spa, our first club in the Chandler market. Many Village Choice members have taken advantage of this new club and are enjoying meeting new friends and participating in new programs at our Ocotillo Village. The Camelback Village remodeled their locker rooms and added a new group training space. The DC Ranch Village Tennis Center is in full swing and has brought a quality tennis facility to north Scottsdale for both adults and juniors.

The Gainey Village is planning an expansion of their training center and will be adding more space for group exercise, Pilates, Cross Fit, and small group training.

Construction will begin in the first half of 2016.

The New Year is a great time to share the gift of fitness and health with family and friends. As always, you will receive a free month of dues for every new member you refer that joins a Village club. Once again, thank you very much for your loyalty and support. It is our members that add such life and energy to our clubs.

The Village is also committed to bringing better technology to our members. We are working on a plan to improve our Wi-Fi at all Village clubs, re-cabling our older clubs in order to have individual TVs on the majority of our cardio equipment, adding more online

It is the support and loyalty of our members that allows us to accomplish all of these projects mentioned above. As we move into 2016, we will continue to reinvest a portion of our enrollment fees and dues revenue back into the clubs. To add to the value of your club membership, we will continue to introduce new programs, classes, and social events that will be included in your monthly dues.

Neptune Swim Team

The Village pools are rocking all winter long! The pools are heated so Village Aquatics programs don’t miss a stroke.

Swim Neptune at the Village offers year round swim team opportunities for swimmers ages five and up, from beginners through high school swimmers with a focus on Technique and Fitness. Practice groups are available for swimmers interested in fun, fitness, and stroke development, as well as for serious competitors at all levels interested in fun as well as honing their competitive skills. Swim lessons are available at all Village clubs for infants through adults. Group, semi-private and private lessons are offered. Each instructor brings expertise and a love of swimming to share with you.

Halloween in the Desert Open

The Village Health Clubs & Spas hosted numerous squash tournaments in 2015. One of our biggest has always been the Halloween in the Desert Open, taking place at DC Ranch. This year was no exception! There were amateur divisions for all levels and ages and also a Pro draw with players competing for $1,000.

Pro players from all over North America and Mexico participated. Lots of great matches, good food, and fun had by all!

Fall Recap

Village Members were hard at work this past fall with so many local and out of state races. Members including TriScottsdale Founder Preston Miller, wife Clem Miller, Camelback Member Sam Coppersmith, and Gainey Members Christina Catalano, Tami Ramano, and Mimi Shaps (among other TriScottsdale members) competed in Ironman Florida on November 7th. Over 50 TriScottsdale and Village Members competed in Ironman Arizona November 15th, including first timers from the Camelback Village Mark Livingston and Christina Spetzler-Chambers. Gainey Member Shawna Glazier competed in Ironman Cozumel November 29th. Not to be outdone, many Village Members competed in local, smaller triathlons and running races this fall, including the New York Marathon, Hot Chocolate 5k/15k, Fiesta Bowl Half Marathon, Tucson Marathon, and the Tour de Tucson Cycling Event. We had a great crowd for the Annual Post Turkey Day Fun Run and the 16th Annual Jingle Bell Triathlon as well as our Kids Triathlon at the DC Ranch Village this past September.

Triathlete Magazine named Arizona the number one place to go for winter training. It’s also the reason some of the country’s top triathlon and cycling coaches call Arizona home and so many top international professionals and teams train in Arizona in the winter.

And no place on earth can beat our sunsets. Add great restaurants, bike lanes and bike-friendly drivers, easy access to trails, and the ability to easily get away from the hustle and bustle, and you’ll be so glad you live here!

Great bike rides There are several group rides each weekend on Saturday and Sunday mornings and you never know what pros and top amateurs you just might see!

There are plans to start a twice-a-month group ride for beginner and intermediate riders, leaving from the Ocotillo Village. Be sure to check on specific details with the Program Director, Rodney Kinney.

If you are wanting to just head out on your own, there are plenty of open roads with wide, smooth shoulders, and limited traffic and street lights, just minutes from the Ocotillo Village. Being in close proximity to the Gila River Indian Reservation gives riders access to long stretches of roads that are good for endless miles of riding. If you are looking for some hill work, it’s a very short ride to the Ahwatukee Foothills.

If you are looking for other group rides in the Chandler area, Global Bike Shops have two locations in Chandler

that offer weekend group rides. Their Chandler North location offers a no-drop ride on Saturday mornings and their Chandler South location offers a no-drop ride on Sunday mornings.

If you’re into mountain biking, there are endless trails to ride just a short ride away on South Mountain.

Great running locations If you run out the Ocotillo Village lobby doors, you are just steps away from some of the best road running in all of the Valley. There are group runs that leave the Ocotillo Village Club on varying schedules, so check with the front desk for details.

You can run the Jacaranda Parkway loop, located inside the Ocotillo neighborhood. It’s a great five-mile loop that runs through the Ocotillo Golf Resort, around lakes, and over bridges. It has limited traffic, wide shoulders and bike lanes, and smooth pavement.

There are other great options that include a run through Fulton Ranch, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Chandler. It’s a beautiful run along lakes, open grassy parks, and small waterfalls, with sightings of an array of water fowl and some of the most beautiful multi-million dollar homes in the valley.

If you’re a die-hard miler and looking for some nofrills straight miles, you’re a short jog from the Queen Creek Road extension through farm fields to the I-10 overpass. It’s a good ten-mile loop.

If you’re on the west side of town, try Starr Pass trail. The trailhead is in the neighborhood of Starr Pass, right behind the golf course. You’ll soon be so far in the mountains you’ll forget you’re ten minutes from downtown.

If you’re looking for a track workout, there are many school tracks located very close to the Ocotillo Village that are open to the public as well, and are perfect for a group run workout or some speed sessions.

If trail running or hiking is your thing, there are endless trails on South Mountain.

Wonderful swimming opportunities The Ocotillo Village has a beautiful five-lane lap pool available from open to close, every day. It is heated in the winter and chilled in the summer.

Five days a week, you can join in a Masters Swim Class. You can do your own workout or one of the highly experienced Masters Swim Coaches can create a workout for you. Classes are scheduled at 5:30 am on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.

There are also evening classes available at 6:00 pm on Tuesday and Thursdays.

State of the art fitness, strength equipment, and recovery The Ocotillo Village has the best Strength Training equipment and machines, to help build that base strength for the long season a head. If you prefer to do your running on treadmills, there is a variety of the top treadmills on the market available for you to use, including Woodways, along with a variety of indoor cycling options.

Other great services available to supplement your training Restorative Yoga consists of deep stretch poses to help release tight, tense muscles while reducing stress. Perfect for recovery from long miles on the bike or running.

And when you’re ready to go out to a nice dinner after a hard day of training with fellow Ocotillo Members, or your friends or guests, there is a huge variety of local restaurants with varying types of food, from inexpensive to elegant dining, all within walking distance or minutes by bike or car.

The Spa at Ocotillo Village is a must for recovery. Massage therapy has numerous benefits for athletes. Massage can speed up recovery after a large day of training, a race, or a big block of training. According to Spa Director Margo Altman, “Massage increases blood flow to the muscles to help speed healing by flushing out the metabolic waste.” Altman says it can also give the athlete a chance to reconnect his mind and body, and decompress.

Non-Member training options: For those members who have guests or friends that would like to join them for training at the Ocotillo Village, there are some ways to do so. If your friends are from out of town, there is a Holiday Inn Express, located just across the street. There are short-term guest passes available as well.

The process of opening the restaurant from scratch was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. To start up a restaurant is every chef’s dream.

When I put together The Lakeview Café menu I wanted to offer a smattering of options that would cover all fitness and flavor bases. Some of the most popular items turned out to be The Power Bowl, The Lean Bowl, The Tex-Mex, and Blackened Salmon. The Power Bowl is lean ground turkey breast sautéed in a little olive oil with diced tomato and roasted poblano chilies served over white beans and roasted red potatoes. I focused on including a certain amount of complex carbohydrates and protein per meal so that it helps “power” you through rigorous workouts. And the menu is full of items with the same focus. You’ll find fresh salads/ingredients, grass-fed beef, free-range poultry, seasonal produce, whole grains, organic items, gluten-free options, vegan choices, and so on.

It is important to me that you want to eat here, enjoy what you’ve chosen, and hopefully feel good about what you’re eating, not only for your health but also for all the great flavors we offer.

For those looking to be part of a team and a like-minded group of athletes, there is a growing group of Ocotillo Village Club Members that are unified by the love of participation in sports and a passion to compete and achieve their personal best. TEAM Village is, very simply, a group of athletes who enjoy group coaching, training, social fun, travel, and opportunities to work together to compete in their favorite sports (runners, cyclists, triathletes, obstacle racers, swimmers, crossfitters, etc.). They enjoy building strong camaraderie and the loyalty of being an active member of the Ocotillo Village Health Club and TEAM. How often do you smile in a day? Do you smile when you meet new people? When you see your friends? Around your co-workers? How about your significant other? Your face has 44 muscles in it that allow you make more than 5,000 different expressions, many of which are smiles. Read on for seven reasons why smiling is good for you, your health, and your social life!

Reducing stress is important for health, too, as it can lower blood pressure, improve digestion and regulate blood sugar. Note that this works during workouts, too! If you’re having a hard time getting through that last rep or getting those final five minutes in on the treadmill, smiling can do wonders!

Smiling can make you happy (even when you’re not).

It turns out that the simple act of smiling sends a message to your brain that you’re happy. And when you’re happy, your body pumps out all kinds of feelgood endorphins. This reaction has been studied since the 1980s and has been proven a number of times. In 1984, an article in the journal Science showed that when people mimic different emotional expressions, their bodies produce physiological changes that reflect the emotion, too, such as changes in heart and breathing rate. Another German study found that people felt happy just by holding a small pen clenched in their teeth, imitating a smile.

Smiling can help you land a job.

Just remember that the research goes both ways.

When the people in the first study frowned, they felt less happy, and in the German study, people who held a pen in their protruding lips, imitating a pout, felt unhappy. So the next time you feel sad or upset, try smiling. It just might make your body—and therefore you—feel better.

Smiling can make others happy.

“When you’re smilin’, the whole world smiles with you.” Ever heard that song, made famous by Louis Armstrong? Well, it’s true. Research shows that smiling is contagious. Ever been around someone who just had something fantastic happen to him or her? Isn’t it almost impossible not to feel good, too?

Studies show that something as simple as seeing a friend smile can activate the muscles in your face to make that same expression, without you even being aware that you are doing it. Crazy, right?

But remember that this, too, can be for better or for worse. You know the expression “misery loves company”? Frowns act just like smiles, just with a negative reaction, so choose to smile and watch the world smile back!

Smiling makes you more attractive.

Ever wonder why are we always asked to smile in photos? Because people usually look their best—and happiest—when smiling. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 96 percent of American adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex. So the next time you are about to ask someone on a date, smile. It’ll make them feel happier (see No. 2), and you’ll already be more attractive in his or her eyes!

Smiling can lead to laughter.

Have you ever laughed without smiling? It’s pretty impossible to do. And it’s funny how a smile here and a smile there with friends can turn into a whole fit of hysterical laughter. Numerous studies have been done on the health benefits of laughing, including how it acts like a mini-workout that burns calories and works the abs. Laughter also helps blood flow, lowers blood sugar levels, reduces stress, and improves sleep. It may also raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body, which helps boost your immune system.

So the moral of this story is smile—and laugh—often!

Smiling just feels good.

Have you ever found that smiling just feels good? Go ahead, smile now. Doesn’t it feel natural? Make you feel happy to be alive? It sure does beat the heck out of a frown.

So the next time you’re feeling down or out of sorts, try a smile. If you can’t find a reason to smile, pop in a funny DVD, read the Sunday comics, or call a friend. Heck, you may be able to even read the word smile and feel better. According to research published in Psychological Science, simply reading certain words may also have the same effect. Just like seeing someone else smile makes you smile, reading emotion verbs (like smile, grin, frown, etc.) can also activate specific facial muscles.

Isn’t it time you turn that frown upside down? Now say “cheese!”

Smiling can help you de-stress.

The next time you’re stressed about work or realize that your favorite jeans feel a little snug, don’t freak out. Take a few deep breaths and smile! Smiling may help to reduce symptoms associated with anxiety.

When that smile signals to your brain that you’re feeling happy (even though you’re not really feeling happy...yet), your body will usually slow its breathing and heart rate.

If you’re about to go on a job interview, you may think that your appearance is just about wearing nice clothes. Wrong! You can’t just wear that suit; you have to wear it with a smile. In a study published in the December 2009 issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, people looked at full-body photographs of 123 people they had never met. The people in the photos had one of two expressions: neutral (think of your passport photo) or a smile.

And guess what? When observers saw the photos of smiling people, they were more likely to think that the person in the photo was likeable, confident, conscientious and stable. Sound like traits most companies want in an employee, right? So the next time you’re dressing to impress, make sure to take that beautiful, natural smile with you!

It starts out on the easy Dixie Mine trail in Fountain Hills and then connects with the very steep road up the east side of Thompson Peak. If you don’t feel like you’re an advanced hiker, you can just go up as far as you want and then turn around when we are coming back down. We’ll meet in the Sprouts parking lot on Shea & 92nd Street at 7 am to carpool to the hike. TUSCANYTRIP I want to share with you the incredible experience of the 2015 Tuscany trip for Village members.

with overwhelming history and beauty, and Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera.

We departed on September 4, arriving the next day in Tuscany at the Castello di Santa Maria Novella, which is the highest point between Florence and Sienna in the rolling hills of Chianti. This amazing Tuscan Castle was to be our home for the week. We could enjoy daily tours or stay at the castle, relax, and do other activities such as cooking classes, watercolor painting, or ceramic painting, taught by Italian cooks and artists.

The food was fabulous, and we dined each evening in different restaurants in addition to a dinner in the castle with our own private concert by an opera singer while we dined.

We toured the Uffizi Gallery in Florence with the statue of David and other Michelangelo sculptures, and other amazing cathedrals and sites, such as the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio. Siena was another favorite of mine, with Giovanni Pisano’s wonderful black and white Gothic cathedral. We saw San Gimignano, Voltra

This region is noted for Chianti and we were in Greve and visited the vineyards with wine and cheese tasting.

One of the biggest joys of the trip were all the people in our group who were fun, enjoyed the beauty, and we were all impressed and fascinated as each day brought a great adventure to share.

Front Desk Manager Amanda Ware knows that she needs fierce competition to thrive.

“A few years ago, I decided I wanted to compete in something,” recalls Amanda Ware, a Village employee with an impressive tenure that spans the past 15 years.

“I tried figure competitions, but it just wasn’t enough for me. Eventually, I found Half Ironman triathlons and I’ve never been happier.”

Fresh off a 10th-place finish out of a field of 120 in the 30–34 age group at Ironman Austin 70.3, Amanda is already looking ahead to next year. “I want to qualify for Worlds,” she says. To do so, she must finish in the top five of her age group at any qualifying event before next September. “I’ll pick two or three races, including one in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, that my dad will be running in.”

Amanda’s pursuit of excellence is just as obvious outside the confines of a 70.3-mile Half Ironman course. At the Village, she’s a powerful advocate for the eight front desk attendants she supervises. “I was a front desk attendant before, so I know how important it is for the people at the front desk to know everything.

I’m tough on other department heads when it comes to communicating with me about everything that’s going on at the Club.”

We caught up with Amanda to see how a competitive spirit can really take you places.

the village: What do you like best about triathlons? amanda ware: Triathlons offer a ton of variety. I tried cycling competitions for a while and did really well, but the races and the training were a little too boring for me. With triathlons, I get to train in a different way every day, and each race forces you to really focus on what you’re doing.

Have you always been active? Yes. Sports have always been important in my life and I’m dedicated to helping other people live an active lifestyle. I’ve coached varsity volleyball at Tempe Preparatory Academy for 15 years and I teach spin and yoga at the Village.

Why do you think that competition is so important to you? It’s probably because I was born in Texas. I moved here when I was 18 months old, but I honor the fact that I was born in the place you don’t want to mess with.

With a competitive spirit, the Village must be great place to work. It’s hard not to be active when you work here! While most of my training is done outside, it’s great to have access to the pool, the weights and the foam rollers. And it’s nice to be able to run inside if I have to. We’ve got the best treadmills, which are really easy on your body. All the resources at the Village are incredible. When I was competing for a figure competition four years ago, I relied on Kevin Shephard for all sorts of training advice. I won second place, but the sport wasn’t active enough for me.

How long have you worked at the Village? I started working at Gainey when I was a senior in high school, so 15 years! I worked at Camelback for a while, then I moved to DC Ranch when it opened.

How long have you been the Front Desk Manager? For about two years. I took the position about the same time I started running triathlons!

Do members ask you for triathlon training advice? Sometimes.

I mostly get questions about cycling and yoga, though. A lot of people ask me for tips on what kind of bike they should get, and what stretches they can do.

Is stretching important? It’s huge, especially for someone in endurance sports. Bike riding and running are really hard on your body, so stretching has to be a priority.

How often do you stretch? I do about 30 minutes a day, usually in the afternoon or evening.

How do you get people to stretch more? I tell people not to do the same stretches every day. In my opinion, it’s a lot easier to get your stretching in if you have a threeday rotation. I’m also a huge proponent of foam rollers.

They may make you cry, but they really help your body heal and stay flexible.

Has your diet changed since you’ve been doing triathlons?

Yeah. Six weeks ago, before I ran the Austin race, I cut all candy, dessert, alcohol, and processed sugar out of my diet.

I was really clean, felt great, and even lost some weight.

And it was a big deal for me, because I used to eat at least some candy every day.

Do you have goals for yourself professionally at the Village?

Just to make sure that the members are happy and that my Front Desk Attendants have everything they need to provide the best customer service.

You left The Village for a while. Why did you decide to come back? I left The Village in 2002 and came back as a part-time cycle instructor in 2003. I jumped at the opportunity to become the front desk manager in 2013. I love being at The Village because of the positive relationships I have developed with my fellow co-workers and members over the years. I could not imagine accomplishing what I have without the support of everyone. The Village is home for me and is my second family.

Manage Stress—find ways to relax. Get a massage at the Spa, relax in the Jacuzzi, or read a book out by the pool (really, how long has it been since you actually read a book?!)

Cultivate a Support Network. What better place than the Village! We have the childcare area and activities to keep your kids busy and employees that are willing to help! Spend some time in the café area to catch up on emails and phone calls, or meet with other parents to share stories and ideas. Because it takes a Village to raise a child!

Be a Realistic Parent—you don’t have to be a “super” parent. As parents, we tend to juggle everything around our children, which leads to very busy schedules with not a lot of time for ourselves. At the Village, there are kids activities and programs that are offered alongside classes for you. You don’t have to drive all over town to be a good parent!

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others. At the Village you are sure to find what is best for you, your family, and your lifestyle.

Sit down with a clean sheet of paper and map it out. Begin with your first meal of the day, and continue for each meal until you have planned what to have, even up to pre-bed time if you choose to do so. Map out each possible meal you might have.

This is the first feed of the day and it will jump start your metabolism and buy you some time before you have a breakfast meal later. Step, by step, by step, etc… This initial planning lays the foundation of the plan and the map toward success.

Next make a list of your favorite food choices for each meal. For example, for my breakfast, I have 3/4 cup oatmeal with 1.5 cups of water, all microwaved for 3 minutes and 15 seconds. I add cinnamon, raisins, and some butter. What is your favorite breakfast choice? Have it 5 to 7 days a week. You might make cold oatmeal and have a portion every morning. I do not support having shakes as meals when there are so many wonderful food choices that are just as fast to prepare, and that are more filling and just as nutritious. Take the time to figure out what works for you.

What do you like for snacks? What would you plan for lunch that you can bring from home? What is the dinner you made the night before? Can you make extra food so you can take leftovers for lunch for several days? This is planning your meals. Any food choice you make and bring from home will taste just as good as purchased food, cost less, and have fewer calories.

Plus you know exactly what’s in the food.

Next, make a shopping list of ingredients for your meals and snack choices. Go to the store the day before you plan to cook.

What is your cooking day? For me, it’s Sunday afternoon. I pour a club soda, add lemon and lime, turn off the phone, and put on some Motown soul music for two to three hours. I’m the labor, instead of paying a restaurant or food establishment. When I emerge I have my own kitchen café full of freshly prepared food for the week… a large beautiful green salad with fresh balsamic dressing, salt-and-peppered baked chicken, and salt-and-peppered sautéed salmon. Wrap the cooked portions tightly in plastic wrap, then place in freezer bags.

Each morning, take out a portion of protein from the freezer for the next day. Frozen, pre-cooked food will thaw in the refrigerator in 24 hours.

Learn to make a delicious mixed green leaf or garden chopped salad. Learn to make your own balsamic vinaigrette dressing in a jar, which is simply 1 cup olive oil, 1/3 cup of any wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar, 2 tablespoons Dijon-style mustard, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and that’s it!

Wash and clean grapes or your favorite fruit choice. Place four ounces in snack bags. When the week begins you can have eight four-ounce bags of grapes ready to go. Why pay a company to do this when you can do it yourself? Wash and clean snack vegetables and place them in snack bags and be ready to go. If you routinely perform these simple acts you increase the likelihood, 100 percent, that you’ll eat fruit and vegetables all week long.

Buy your favorite frozen mixed vegetables and microwave for five minutes. Add a pinch of salt and 1/2 tablespoon of non-salted butter for taste and you’re good to go. Make the vegetables as you need them all week long.

Using a container with a lid, measure three to five ounces (using a food scale) of protein, and add three or four ounces of vegetables. Or measure three to five ounces of protein in a container. In another container take some salad and place the dressing in a separate container on the side. Toss salad prior to eating. Now you have a protein choice and salad meal. Learn to repeat this process all week long.

If this is your first go-around of trying this type of meal planning know that it may take you several weeks or months of trial and correction to get this figured out. Remember you are the labor. You’re not paying someone else to feed you.

Once this is learned, this is how simple cooking for and feeding yourself can be, on a regular basis.

You have a lifetime to figure this out. Have fun experimenting and learning.

Only you can create the perfectly cooked and spiced meal of your liking.

VALLEY TRANSPLANT KIM BRADSK Y, ALONG WITH HER HUSBAND RICH AND THEIR FOUR KIDS, FOUND A WARM WELCOME AT THE OCOTILLO VILLAGE.

It’s not easy to uproot yourself from the place you grew up and move to a completely different environment, especially when you have four kids who have to leave friends and familiar activities behind.

But that’s exactly what Kim and Rich Bradsky did in June of this year, when they gave up the cold climate and small-town feel of Rapid City, South Dakota, for a warmer, more urban lifestyle here in the Valley.

“We were told the summer months would be brutal,” Kim recalls. “Our house didn’t have a back yard yet and the kids were pretty limited when it came to activities.”

Kim and her family found solace just five miles away at the Ocotollo Village. “It quickly became an extension of our house,” Kim says. “The kids were excited to have a pool to swim in and a basketball court to play on.”

The Village helped the Bradskys make a smooth transition to desert living. “Everyone made a huge effort to welcome us,” Kim says. “Very quickly, the people at the Club knew who we were. Everyone’s been so friendly.”

We caught up with Kim one cool fall morning, to find out how she and her brood are adjusting to life in the Valley.

the village: What attracted you to the Phoenix area? kim bradsky: My husband and I were ready to pave a new path in our lives, and we wanted to settle in a place with warm weather and more of a big-city vibe.

My husband still does business in South Dakota, and it’s fairly easy for him to travel back and forth each month.

What do you think of the Valley now that you’ve been here for a while? We like it a lot. There’s definitely no shortage of things to do and new places to visit nearby. We lived in the second-largest city in South Dakota, but there were still only 75,000 people and it’s fairly remote.

How did you find the Village? We were members of a club in Rapid City and the owner told my husband that we should check out the Village. Apparently, the Village has a great reputation, even up in South Dakota! We did our due diligence and looked at other clubs, but the Village had everything we were looking for.

What was the major factor in your decision to join? Any club we picked had to meet a lot of criteria. We have four active kids aged 12, 14, 16 and 18, and they all needed a place where they could train and have fun.

Rich and I needed a place where we knew they’d be safe. One of the biggest advantages the Village had over the other clubs we looked at was that it offered a place for our youngest to feel like he had things to do, since he’s not quite old enough to train on his own.

How was it when you got there? Everything was just terrific, but the icing on the cake was meeting Ryan Udarbe, an NSCA-Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He’s an unbelievable trainer and became our family’s first friend in town.

How has he been helpful to your family? Ryan started working with our 16-year-old, who’s six-foot-five and plays basketball. Our son wanted to put on size and we wanted him to learn how to train to avoid hurting himself. We’ve seen high school athletes sustain some serious injuries that can lead to lifelong problems and we want to do what we can to avoid that for our kids. Through training with Ryan, our son put on nine pounds of muscle in a month.

But Ryan’s impact didn’t stop there. Our daughter started college this year and made the club volleyball team, thanks in part to Ryan’s training as well. Our 14-year-old is a golfer and he trains with Ryan twice a week. And my husband and I have started training with him, too.

What are you hoping to get out of your training with Ryan? I’m a Stott Pilates-trained instructor, and I wanted to see what his methods were compared to what I know. He’s showing me his craft and it’s really expanded my view of different ways to build strength and improve performance.

What else do you do at the club? I know, right?

It’s not all about Ryan! We do a lot of classes. My husband and I had never done yoga before, and now we do it together. We also take spin and Kinesis classes. We’ve tried it all. What I like about the Village is that there’s always something going on.

If you have an open mind, you can benefit from trying a cross-section of things no matter how busy your schedule is. We also enjoy the Spa, because massage is an important part of wellness. We’ve traveled quite a bit, and I can honestly say that the Village has some of the best massage therapists I’ve ever experienced. In addition to all those things, my husband has been able to take care of business at the Club, by taking advantage of the Wi-Fi and some of the meeting rooms that are available.

I want to go back to your son’s results. Was that just from training? Training and nutrition. We worked with Isaac Rios in the café to put together a trial nutrition program to complement our sons workouts, so he could gain the size he wanted appropriately. For an entire month, Isaac and the Café staff prepared

Has working with Isaac changed your eating habits?

Definitely. Coming from South Dakota, we’re constantly learning to use ingredients that we weren’t as familiar with, like black beans and quinoa for example. We’re definitely getting a Southwest influence while making healthier choices and opting for more organic food. Working with Isaac really raised our awareness about what our bodies need to perform at their best. I think people usually look at diet as targeting weight loss, but young athletes and others who are training for events really need to understand the importance of caloric balance. For instance, I realized that I was actually underfeeding my husband and I by trying to cut out carbs.

It seems like you and your family have always been active. What do you attribute that to? Sports are a big deal in the Midwest. My husband is an avid sports fan and has always inspired it in our kids. South Dakota is also really big for hiking, snow sports, and lake activities.

How do you juggle all your workouts at the Village with four kids? We’re pretty flexible, and because exercise makes such a difference in your life, especially when you’re going someplace you enjoy, we make it a priority. It was a little more complicated before our daughter started college because we didn’t bring her car with us. I was actually stranded one morning. I walked out to go to the gym and the cars were all gone, so they had to come back and get me.

As your kids grow up, what’s your future look like?

It’ll definitely be different with four kids out of the house in a few years, but I’ve been learning more about how Pilates is taught at the Village. It’s on my radar to maybe get certified in Arizona and teach again. Who knows?

Havana Nights There was no passport required for the hot night of fun and dancing at the Ocotillo Village Havana Nights Party on October 12th.

Members enjoyed authentic Cuban food and drinks, with high energy dance music that ranged from Latin, Caribbean to all the top dance hits that kept the members dancing all night long.
