FITNESS CURE FOR THE

AMASSES $1.2 MILLION FOR TGEN RESEARCH

For the 8th year, TGen volunteers organized a fundraising weekend at the Village Health Clubs in Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Chandler. The event, Fitness for the Cure, raised an amazing $165,000 (and still counting), bringing the total amassed over eight years to more than $1.2 million for TGen cancer research. One of the key participants in these annual events is Dr. Matt Huentelman, a long-distance cyclist and a professor in TGen’s Neurogenomics Division. Also this spring, a scientific paper authored by Dr. Huentelman was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, suggesting how—for the first time—exercise could be customized based on genomics.

6

“We hope to leverage these findings into more precise exercise recommendations in the future—ones that are tailored to an individual not only based on their physiological needs but also based on their molecular response to exercise,” Dr. Huentelman said.

Meantime, organizers and supporters of Fitness for the Cure are doing some leveraging of their own. “We are opening up this event to more than spinning classes and a few yoga options to a whole variety of exercise modes, enabling TGen supporters to select the activities that best fit their goals and passions,” said Vicki Vaughn, one of the co-chairs of the event (in past years known as Cycle for the Cure). Fitness for the Cure now includes a number of exerciserelated activities, such as hiking, tennis, a variety of yoga options, a fitness boot camp, and an hour of interval training called Mixxed Fit.

Fitness at TGen is both a focus of our science, and the funding of our science.

“Village Health Clubs are exclusive, state-of-the-art workout facilities, and we are so glad that they … support all the good work TGen does to find better treatments for the many types of cancer that afflict Arizonans,” said Robyn DeBell, also a co-chair of Fitness for the Cure. One of the major sponsors of Fitness for the Cure is Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company, an 82-year-old nationwide health and life insurance firm that specializes in helping policyholders pay for the high out-of-pocket costs associated with cancer treatment and other critical illnesses. GTL donated $50,000 to this year’s Fitness for the Cure event, bringing its total donations in recent years to more than $200,000. “We are extremely excited about our collaboration with TGen as we work together to create innovative insurance policies which actually pay for genetic testing. By leveraging TGen’s world-class research capabilities we believe we can craft more precise plans of care and deliver better outcomes

for our policyholders when they are faced with critical illnesses such as a cancer diagnosis,” said GTL Chairman, President, and CEO Richard S. Holson III. In the meantime, Dr. Huentelman is excited about the future possibilities of his exercise study, which was conducted in collaboration with Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions, with contributions from Midwestern University and Purdue University. By better understanding the unique molecular processes stimulated by different types of exercise, the researchers hope to find better ways to promote muscle health. They also maintain that this research could lead to more effective exercise interventions that target abnormalities associated with specific muscle dysfunctions.

Dr. Huentelman’s study— “Transcriptome response of human skeletal muscle to divergent exercise stimuli” —was published March 15 in the Journal of Applied Physiology.

WEIGHT TRAINING AND WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT FOR WOMEN My name is Ronea and I have been working at the Village as a personal trainer for just under a year now, and It’s absolutely amazing what this facility has to offer its members. I recently moved here from Connecticut to pursue my professional track career and came across the Village while hunting for a part-time job. Fitness has always been a huge part of my life and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. Specifically, I encourage women to weight train and I thought I would give you all a few reasons why. Contrary to what many women think, we will not “bulk up.” Muscle mass is hard to put on and doesn’t happen overnight. I can personally attest that it is not that easy. First and foremost, women should weight train to protect and improve our health. Weight training helps maintain and improve bone density, which as we know is a prevalent issue in women’s health. It has also been shown to help those with high blood pressure, which in the end decreases your chance of heart disease. During a training session our bodies release endorphins, otherwise known as “feel good” hormones, which have been correlated to a decrease in depression. Aside from health benefits, weight training aids in weight loss.

Ronea Saunders, Gainey Village Personal Trainer

Proper weight training teaches us how to use our bodies functionally. If you are not comfortable in the weight room, reach out to a Personal Trainer— that’s what we are here for! Most importantly, train smarter not harder. Training programs are developed to fit your personal needs and goals. Simply entering a weight room and picking up whatever is easily available is not the way to go about it. Invest your time and energy into your well-being. It may look intimidating at first but I can promise you it is not. Just like everything else, it becomes fun once you get good at it!

Weight Training Benefits:

1 Increases & maintains bone density 2 Increases metabolism 3 Improves body image 4 Increases heart health 5 Keeps weight off 6 Releases “feel good” hormones 7 Decreases blood pressure

summer 2018 BET TERLIFE | 13

Women should weight train because it boosts our metabolism. Instead of only hitting the cardio room, try including some weight training in your regimen. Resistance training increases our muscle mass, which consequently increases our BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), the calories we burn at rest. If we don’t change how our bodies work on a metabolic level, then how can we expect to keep weight off? The easiest way to think about this is to imagine

you have a two-sided scale; you need to expend more calories than you consume to create a caloric deficit in order to lose weight. Now, if you can increase your BMR so you’re burning more calories even while you rest, wouldn’t that make achieving a caloric deficit that much easier? Furthermore, we can also increase the amount of calories we expend on any given day by including weight training in our routine—thus making weight easier to get off and keep off, which is typically our end goal.

HELLO Women often have misconceptions about weight training. I’m here to clear those up and show that lifting can benefit everybody. — Ronea Saunders

JUMPING RIGHT IN High jumper Ronea Saunders is reaching new heights at the Gainey Village Health Club & Spa.

14 | BET TERLIFE summer 2018

Ronea Saunders has a history of jumping into things. She was a competitive high jumper who broke records in Connecticut as a high school and college student. She moved to Phoenix, sight unseen, after graduating college in 2015 to pursue a pro career through the ALTIS training center for elite track and field athletes. And when her program was unexpectedly cut last summer, she jumped at the chance to work at the Gainey Village as a personal trainer. Ronea is putting her degree in exercise science, along with an exercise physiology certification from the National Association of Sports Medicine, to good use, helping members of all ages reap the benefits of a fitness lifestyle. We talked to Ronea about tackling new adventures, facing challenges, and her sarcastic attitude. She also gave us some great advice that even non-pro athletes can use to get in better shape.

the village: What was your impression of Phoenix

when you first arrived? ronea saunders: I thought it was gorgeous. I never imagined living out here, but an old roommate of mine moved here and predicted that I’d end up joining her. We still hang out all the time. When they canceled your high jumping program, what did you think? It was a personal disappointment. The coach was fired and we were informed by email. Later, we found out that a new coach wasn’t being hired so the program was canceled.

Did any of the other jumpers stay in town? No, just me. The others either transferred to other programs or went back where they were from. We had people from all over the world, and I met great people from Australia and Jamaica who I hope I can go visit one day. Why did you decide to stay in Phoenix? I had just signed a new lease, and I really felt pretty settled here. I like it a lot and my friends and family back East like coming out to visit. So was that the end of your pro career? I’d be open to getting back into it, but being a professional track and field athlete isn’t always easy. We had to cover our own travel expenses when we went to meets and then get reimbursed later, and that sometimes took months. Plus we only got paid if we won events. Did you have any sponsors? RSP Nutrition sent me supplements, which definitely helped. Do you miss it at all? I definitely do. I got to train five hours a day! Now you train other people. What do you like best about working with clients? The best thing is when my clients see results. I love encouraging them, and it’s great to see their confidence grow. The ones who stay with it usually amaze themselves. What kinds of clients do you work with? I work with just about everyone. My youngest client is 12 and my oldest is 75. Do you have any favorites? I like them all! Millennials can be a little more difficult because they’re busy with careers, dating, going out, and things like that. It’s harder for them to commit their time. How do you tailor programs for different age groups, genders, etc.? I’ve been in athletics since I was really young, so I have lots of experience going back to when I was 10, and when I was in college I got to work with some residents of a senior citizens’ home. Honestly, it’s more fun for me when I have to figure out ways to work around any limitations my clients might have. What should people look for in a personal trainer? I think it’s helpful to work with someone with a similar personality type. I have a lot of sarcastic clients, which makes the training sessions a lot more fun. How did you develop your sarcasm? I got it from my parents. They’re from New York and Connecticut, and are always making smart remarks. What’s your best advice for people who want to get in shape? If someone says they want to get in shape and don’t put forth the effort, then it’s not going to work. You really have to be consistent, and that means weightlifting two or three times a week and a couple of days of cardio. You’re a big advocate of getting women in the weight room? How’s that going? Men and women approach training so differently, but I think it’s really important for women to hit the weights because you can’t go wrong with strong. Most women shy away from it because they think they’ll get big and bulky, but we’re just not built that way. Weight training is a really efficient way to lose weight and stay toned, so I always encourage women to give it a try.

What are your future plans? Things are going really well here at the Village, and I hope to stay here as long as I continue to learn and grow. Eventually, I want to get into real estate and flip houses. It really appeals to me because it’s a bit risky. It’s also a lot like training, because you take something that’s all beat up and turn it into a masterpiece.

HydroLight FACIAL

Ashley Lew, The Spa at DC Ranch Village Lead Aesthetician

Our newest addition to the facial family incorporates Hydrodermabrasion, Microcurrent, Radio Frequency, Ultrasound, Cold Hammer Therapy, and Oxygen Infusion Therapy, as well as LED as an optional addon to this 6-in-1 treatment. The HydroLight Facial is a multi-faceted treatment which tightens, tones, lifts, firms, builds collagen, and delivers and infuses nutrients. This treatment requires no downtime and is beneficial for all skin types. Below is a brief breakdown of the technology behind this spectacular treatment!

16 | BET TERLIFE summer 2018

Hydrodermabrasion has become quite the buzzword in the beauty industry and is taking over in popularity from microdermabrasion. This is partly due to the fact that the treatment utilizes the natural healing powers of water and oxygen to exfoliate rather than using abrasive microcrystals or textured wands. Hydrodermabrasion treatments provide deeply hydrated, firmer, smoother, and healthier-looking skin. It improves skin texture and tone, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, provides deep hydration of the skin, improves blood flow (which leads to collagen production), reduces and improves acne scarring, helps to soften pigmentation, and minimizes skin congestion. Microcurrent is often referred to as a “natural” facelift. This safe and painless facial helps erase fine lines and wrinkles, while firming your skin and defining your features. It improves muscle tone, reduces puffiness, increases cellular activity, and tightens pores. The overall result is healthier and younger-looking skin.

Radiofrequency (RF) is an energy treatment that is used for skin tightening. It is ideal for those who either don’t want, or don’t believe they are old enough to have, a surgical procedure. RF is primarily used to treat skin laxity by facial tightening, and is best suited for clients with mild to moderate sagging of facial tissues, usually those in their mid 30s to 50s. It is commonly used to treat the forehead, under the eyes, cheeks, mid-face, jaw line, and neck. With current RF technologies, most people should see at least a mild improvement in their skin tightness with no downtime. Ultrasound technology aids in the production of collagen, helps to firm up the skin, and encourages skin cells to cycle faster, which creates clearer, younger-looking skin. It also helps to lighten under-eye circles and tighten and tone the skin. During an ultrasonic facial, high-level sound wave technology is used to penetrate deep below the surface of the skin, promoting cellular renewal and repair, toning muscles, increasing blood circulation, encouraging lymphatic drainage, combating puffiness and swelling, and improving skin care product penetration.

Cold Therapy using a Cold Hammer technology has multiple functions and benefits for the skin, especially for facials. The hammer is applied cold on the treated areas, helping to reduce wrinkles and soften the skin. Using the hammer in cold mode is also very beneficial for after diamond dermabrasion treatments, helping to close the pores and smooth the skin. It is also quite beneficial to use after a peel, microneedling, or laser because of its calming and cooling effects.

THIXOTROPY

AND MASSAGE

I was asked the other day by a member what massage does, and gave my pat answer: “Massage increases circulation, which in turn helps the body heal itself.” Although this answer is true, I wanted to explain the more complete picture. Sure, massage increases circulation. Great! But there is more to the story. TJ Fritz, The Spa at Camelback Village Massage Therapist

To paint a more complete picture we will need to examine an often unknown term: thixotropy. To understand thixotropy and its role in massage therapy we need to examine the connection between muscle, connective tissue, and ground substance in the body.

18

Muscle is the tissue that gets all the press. It moves! It’s dynamic! It’s what tones up when we get fit! Muscle has the amazing ability to shorten, lengthen, and relax. The muscle system is comprised of the muscle itself (the contractile tissue) and two forms of connective tissue: bone and connective tissue proper. The connective tissue that wraps around the outside of a muscle is the fascia. Inside the muscle lie deeper, elongated compartments of connective tissue filled with muscle fibers. The connective tissues from these compartments and the fascia travel beyond the ends of muscles to attach the muscle to bone. These connective tissue attachments give muscles the ability to power our bodies through space.

Connective tissue wraps around and cobwebs through all skeletal muscle. It consists mostly of two major components: collagen and ground substance. Collagen is also what gives the body its tensile strength. When you hang from a pull-up bar, for example, it is your collagen that keeps you together! Collagen is also what your pesky IT band is made of. Forty percent of all proteins in the body are collagen. This stuff is everywhere and permeates the entire body including the skin, nervous system, and circulatory system, and it is a major component of the musculoskeletal system. One of the most basic substances in the body, ground substance accompanies connective tissue wherever it goes. In fact, ground substance is the “ocean” that all of the body’s cells bathe in. It is a carbohydrate and protein amalgam that surrounds all of the body’s cells, has the liquid viscosity of an egg white, and has the ability to change from gel to liquid and liquid to gel. Areas where the ground substance is more gel-like than fluid-like will have a harder time transporting

wastes out of and nutrients into those tissues. In muscle tissue, this will have the adverse effect of decreasing muscle performance and increasing recovery time. When the fascia that surrounds and separates all of the muscles in the body functions properly, the fluidity of the ground substance surrounding the collagen fibers allows the muscles to slide over each over with minimum impedance and friction. Due to overuse, disuse, and time, adhesions sometimes form between muscle bellies, creating unwanted connections between tissues. These adhesions happen wherever collagen fibers from nearby structures that normally should remain separated form a special bond called hydrogen bonding. When this happens between opposing muscles the result can be dysfunction and pain. Hydrogen bonding also happens within the fascia itself and can limit range of motion in joints of the body. The long strands of collagen will pack closer and closer, creating stiffness where there should be fluid movement. In these bonded areas, the ground substance is often found in a more gel than fluid state, limiting the ability of the area to resolve its deficiency. So how do we counteract and break up adhesions, eliminate unwanted hydrogen bonding between fibers, and create a more organized and fluid environment? That brings us back the word of the day: “thixotropy.” Thixotropy is the phenomenon in which gel, in this case ground substance found in connective tissue, shifts from a gel to a liquid state when it is stirred. Regular exercise, stretching, and proper hydration all play a part in maintaining the health of these tissues. Yet as much as all these healthy activities add to the fluidity of ground substance and connective tissue, sometimes they are just not enough. Sometimes the body needs help. The ground substance needs energy added to create a more liquid environment. On a macro level the body needs a more fluid environment to allow the fascia move more easily. On a microscopic level fluidity of the ground substance allows cells to more easily transport waste out and for nutrients to travel into the cells. This is where massage comes in. Massage is thixotropic by definition because it pushes, pulls, and adds energy / warmth to the layers upon layers of ground substance, transforming gelatinous ground substance in to liquid and creating a more homeostatic environment. This takes us back to the original question, “What does massage do?” Massage does much more than stimulate blood circulation. It adds energy and fluidity to the ocean outside the circulatory system where our cells live. Massage utilizes the liquefying effects of thixotropy to separate adhesions, break down unwanted hydrogen bonds within the fascia, and create a more conducive fluid environment for optimal health.

KIDS

TOILET

LEARNING

Is your child ready?

Every child is different. Some children are ready as young as 18 months, but most start between two and four years of age. Marcia Leach, Ocotillo Village Youth Services Director

Here are some signals to look for that may indicate your child might be ready for toilet learning: • Staying dry for more than two hours at a time or waking up dry from naps. • Aware that they need to urinate or have a bowel movement BEFORE actually going. • Interest in the toileting process. • Understanding the difference in being wet/soiled and dry.

There are many methods to choose from depending on how much time and outside support you have. Below are just a few:

1

Buckle down Spend a week at home without diapers or pull-ups on your child. Make the potty chair readily available so they will learn quickly where they will need to start going.

2

Pull-ups May prolong the process as they are much like diapers; however, they come in handy when you have to run errands or when you are outside the home.

3

Peer pressure Have older siblings or even other toddlers go in the bathroom together to demonstrate the process.

4

Rewards Have small rewards or recognition for when they actually go in the toilet. This will help reinforce what you are trying to accomplish.

• Dressing him/herself.

20 | BET TERLIFE summer 2018

• Communicating when they need to be changed. You may also want to start toilet learning in order to be ready for pre-school. Most preschools require your child to be fully capable of using the restroom on their own and wearing underwear prior to being enrolled.

Here at the Village Kids’ Club we support whatever process you use. Just communicate with us how we can help and be sure to bring an extra change of clothes…or two!

HEALTHYCHOICES FOR THE

LITTLES

Creating a nutritious home is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure the health of your child. Smart food choices for yourself and your children will be a great start, and will begin to help your child develop a positive relationship with healthy food. Your children will learn their food smarts from your example. Simple Tips •K eep healthy food at hand. Children will eat what’s readily available. Keep fruit in a bowl on the counter, not buried in the crisper section of your fridge. And have an apple for your own snack. •P raise healthy choices. Give your children a proud smile and tell them how smart they are when they choose healthy foods.

• Give the kids some control. Ask your children to take three bites of all the foods on their plate and give it a grade, such as A, B, C, D, or F. When healthy foods—especially certain vegetables— get high marks, serve them more often.

Blueberry Yogurt Parfait 2 cups blueberries 1 cup of your favorite granola Spoon 1/4 cup yogurt into each of 4 parfait glasses; layer each glass with 1/4 cup blueberries. Continue layering with 1/4 cup of your favorite granola and, 1/4 cup yogurt, and top with 1/4 cup blueberries.

TRAINING WITH

INTENSITY Higher intensity training burns more calories while exercising and also burns more calories post exercise as well.

24 | BET TERLIFE summer 2018

Corey Degenstein, Gainey Village Fitness Director

Many publications and magazines have stated the varied benefits of higher intensity training over the last decade. The obvious benefit is being more time efficient. A shorter workout at higher intensity gets you in and out of the club quicker on days when you need to get to work. Higher intensity training burns more calories while exercising AND also burns more calories post exercise as well. If a member has consistently trained at a steady pace for mid to long duration (think of 30 – 60 minute cardio sessions), adding a short interval at higher intensity can increase their max VO2. This increase creates the opportunity for your body to be more efficient at various intensity levels. Your body is an amazingly adaptable system. If you have been doing the same cardio workouts for years, it no longer is a challenge to your system. Intervals can be just what you need to break through a plateau and see better health and fitness results, including losing weight. Broadly speaking, cardio intervals, HIIT classes, minimal-to no-rest interval training, and the like would be similarly beneficial to most Village members. Many of the group fitness classes and small group training programs offered at the Village Clubs do a fantastic job of providing higher intensity training. If you do not partake in these group programs and classes there is still hope. Many of our cardiovascular equipment (treadmills, stair climbers, ellipticals, and stationary bikes) have built-in interval programs. Search them

out next time you are in the club and try something different than just hitting Quick Start. Along with many great benefits of higher intensity training (I have only mentioned a few here) there are also risks. Exercising at higher intensity can be a shock to your body and might require a longer recovery period. Too much of a good thing can also be the case with high intensity training. Try mixing up your workouts so some are medium intensity and others are high intensity. If your high intensity workouts are truly high intensity, they should be relatively short in duration and only occur a few times per week. Overtraining and the adverse effects it brings can set in with too much high intensity in your workouts. The benefits of higher intensity training can be well worth the effort when approached consciously. Look to add intervals into your workouts slowly, and gradually increase the higher intensity component as your fitness improves. As always, if you would like some professional guidance in adding high intensity bouts into your workouts, contact your club’s fitness director or favorite personal trainer, who can help you reach new heights in your workout programming!

With summer rapidly approaching it is very important to eat healthy and stay hydrated. In the desert climate our heart rate increases and blood flow slows down. A healthy diet can increase mobility and improve quality of life. Eating foods high in protein, grains, and greens with low-fat high fiber can regulate blood sugar and promote a healthy lifestyle. While eating at the Village, your home, or other restaurants, include superfoods in your diet. Some of these include: avocado, blueberries, bananas, kale, lemon, salmon, and spinach. Always include lots of water in your diet and remember, life—and healthy food—are better at the Village!

INFLAMMATION

TAME

WITH REGULAR EXERCISE Linda Hertzberg, Camelback Village Group Fitness Director

Inflammation is a vital part of your body’s immune system. For instance, when you have a fever or experience trauma, your immune system goes into high gear by increasing blood flow and bringing in special immune cells to repair and remove damaged tissues. This is the inflammatory response at work. The ability to marshal this response is a sign of a healthy immune system. However, too much inflammation can be caused by a serious illness, being a couch potato, or even too much exercise.

26 | BET TERLIFE summer 2018

The role of regular exercise in the inflammation story The design of the human body requires regular exercise to maintain a healthy immune system that can keep inflammation under control. Ancient men and women exercised naturally by hunting and gathering food to survive. Today, we don’t have to do much more than drive to the grocery store to get our food. Little to no exercise needed to accomplish that! That is our modern day dilemma. In order to fulfill the requirements of our ancient genetic design, we must get the right amount of exercise to keep our bodies in a healthy immune/inflammatory balance. Achieving just the right amount of exercise to balance your inflammatory system is similar to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Too little exercise may not help enough and too much exercise may promote chronic inflammation. Just the right amount of exercise combined with time for

recovery is what’s needed. Every person has to find the proper balance of exercise and recovery.

The importance of recovery Moderate intensity exercise, like fast walking five or six days a week for 20 – 30 minutes, is great for beginners. Depending on your fitness level, you might experience muscle soreness. Soreness is an indicator that you should let your body recover by taking it easy for a day. Resting will allow your body to accomplish the complicated chemical process of getting rid of the inflammation that’s making you sore. The good news is that this recovery process will actually make you healthier and stronger. Varying the type of exercise you do will help with recovery too. Instead of walking, try swimming, dancing, or weight training. I recommend cross-training, which means engaging in many forms of movement or exercise as a way of avoiding overworking the same muscles in the same way everyday. As you get stronger, you will find that you will not get sore as much. That is a major benefit of exercise— your body adapts through the inflammation process. So, the next time you’re sore from spin class, take a swim or a yoga class and relax, knowing that your body is doing important and natural work.

Head Tennis Professional Ryan Sawyer runs this clinic with laughter and fun throughout. Clinic is from 6:30 – 8 pm every Thursday and is only $20—including beverages.

Welcome to the big leagues. If you don’t know how to handle pace, this clinic is not for you. This is also a coed clinic and there are many genders that think this clinic is a battle of the sexes. Players are constantly moving, and drills are based upon levels that can hit 3 – 5 balls in a row consistently. These drills work on hitting heavy topspin, carving slices, dink & dunks, penetrating the middle, real & fake poaches, defense to offense, and playing doubles on a singles court. This drill session is super competitive and beverages are only for after the clinic. This clinic is run by Director of Tennis and Master of Tennis Performance Josh Bates. Cost is only $30 and includes beverages, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

Live Ball 3.0 – 4.0 This coed clinic is for those who want to have fast-paced drills to enhance their level of play. Players will learn strategies and patterns for doubles. Drills will also include poaching & switching, recovery, overheads, approach shots, consistency, and footwork. These players are

VOWING TO GETFIT JD and Audra Tucker used the occasion of their wedding to recommit to a fitness lifestyle.

28 | BET TERLIFE summer 2018

JD Tucker likes to say that he met his wife Audra “in the produce section of Whole Foods.” Like many modern couples, however, they were brought together by an online dating service. No matter the method, the pairing seemed destined to be: Not only did JD and Audra both move to Arizona within a year and a half of each other, they could have crossed paths when they both lived in Italy, traveled extensively in Africa, or lived in Manhattan. The two matched up quickly online, towards the end of 2014. They hit it off right away, and have been living like marrieds ever since. “We were really lucky,” JD recalls. “There were never any stumbling blocks and we just fell into a comfortable rhythm.” Self-described homebodies, JD and Audra are content to hang out with their two dogs after a productive day’s work. They do find time to travel, though, and have gone to exotic

places like Greece and Romania together. And because JD is a huge sports fan, he occasionally drags Audra to Philly to see his beloved Eagles play, even though he was born and raised in New York. It took the couple a little bit of time to plan their wedding, but they wanted to do it right. They decided on Kauai, Hawaii’s Garden Isle, known for its lush rainforest, dramatic cliffs, and breathtaking beaches. And because there’s nothing like a destination wedding in a tropical paradise to motivate a couple to get in shape, they took advantage of everything the Village has to offer to get ready for the big day. We caught up with JD a little less than a week before the wedding, to find out how they approached and achieved their goals.

We knew we needed to change our lifestyle in a positive way , instead of just letting life get to us. — JD Tucker

the village: How did you come to join the Village?? jd tucker: We live about halfway between the Gainey and DC Ranch locations, so we joined last April as Village Choice members. We were going to Gainey more initially, but when they shut the locker rooms we got into a rhythm at DC Ranch. Audra’s sister and brother in law go there, which makes it fun.

Was the wedding the reason you joined? Not really. The wedding was a big motivator recently, but the reason we joined was because some of our bad habits were catching up with us. I was traveling a lot for work and wasn’t eating as well as I should. My irregular gym routine led to a few nagging injuries, and then we had two family members and some close friends pass away or get sick in a short amount of time. We knew we needed to change our lifestyle in a positive way, instead of just letting life get to us. Do you work out together? We work out together for the most part. We do yoga and take spin classes, lift weights, and do cardio. I’ll play basketball more than Audra does. We both love the fact that the Village has lots of options, so you can mix things up if your workout routine gets stale or if you get an injury.

What sort of instructions did your plan give you? For me, it was the little things that we just wouldn’t have thought of on our own that meant the most, like what kind of containers to store food in, or a schedule that has us shopping for a week’s worth of groceries on Saturday and preparing the food on Sunday.

S carlet’s mom Lisa Summers, Michelle Obama, and Scarlet Summers.

Why is your workout window 5 am on weekdays? I’m a consultant to the power industry and Audra’s an attorney at Rose Law Group, so we’re both really busy with our careers. We decided that mornings would be the best time for both of us. It took a real commitment to getting up and going to the gym five days a week, but now it feels natural to us. Have you always been active? Yeah, I played baseball, basketball, and football and I was in good shape up until I turned 35. I put on 15 pounds then and it’s been a back and forth battle ever since. At that point in my life, I realized that you can’t just eat and drink whatever you want anymore. I can no longer push my limits with beer, pizza, and ice cream. Last year I hit a weight I never even got close to before, and that’s when I knew I had to make a change. After the wedding is over, will you stay committed to your healthy lifestyle? Absolutely. As soon as we get back, we’ll be going to the Village. Years ago, I was trapped in the mentality that if I couldn’t do a crazy, awesome workout then it wasn’t worth going to the gym at all. Kevin taught me that even if you’re tired and don’t have the energy for a full workout, it’s better to just get off your butt and do what you can. Half the time, I forget about being tired and end up having a better workout than I thought I would.

summer 2018 BET TERLIFE | 29

What did you do to get in shape for the wedding? We started talking about it around Christmas, but we took a vacation to Mexico and work got busy after the New Year, so it wasn’t until late January that we started to look for a personal trainer. We were steered to Kevin Shepherd but he was pretty much all booked up—we learned that it’s hard to get a trainer when your window is 5 am on weekdays. We really liked Kevin and he found time to give us five sessions so we could get started. The best part was that he laid out a simple workout and lifestyle plan that really clicked with us. Because it outlined everything we needed to do, it removed a lot of barriers and was really easy to stick to.

Was it smooth sailing after you had your plan in place? Yeah, for the most part. I’m proud of the fact that I lost 27 pounds since March 11. And it was all fat, not just water weight or some faddish thing. I’ve gotten close to my goals but I still have longer goals. I’m looking better for the wedding and I’m on a path to ideal shape for my age.

THE VILLAGE

DIFFERENCE

I started working for the Village one year ago and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. Our members are the heart and soul of our clubs and our staff is always looking for ways to enhance their experience. Ryan Wiederspan, Gainey Village Membership Director

Having lived most of my life in Colorado, I can’t recall any fitness club that even closely resembles what we offer here at the Village. With a large number of friends & family still in Colorado I get asked frequently how I like working at the “gym,” at which point I always explain how the Village is an executive health club unlike any other! It provides what I refer to as “The Village Difference.” The Village Difference is being part of a community. A community where our members are able to disconnect from the outside world and socialize with like-minded individuals. It’s providing rich and rewarding experiences to our members through social events in and outside the club. It’s the ability to get an amazing workout in during one of 160 weekly classes, then head to the café to enjoy a glass of wine, conversation and delicious food. The Village Difference is simple: it’s the sense of having a home away from home.

If anybody reading this article encounters questions about the Village from friends & family like I have, I’d recommend keeping your response simple and tell them about “The Village Difference.” Better yet, take them to a Village location near you and let them experience it for themselves.

I speak from experience when I say the Village is truly a home away from home.

Members and their guests were treated to a Hawaiian-style buffet, prepared by the Living Room Restaurant and Wine Bar. Photo memories of the party were provided by Fab Fern Photo Booth.
