WELCOME! On behalf of the 2015 Viennese Ball Committee, we are delighted to welcome you to the 38th annual Viennese Ball, held this year at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara.

The Viennese Ball was inspired thirty-eight years ago when students returning from Stanford’s Austrian program wanted to bring back the elegance of Vienna’s winter balls and Austrian dance culture. Since then it has become a Stanford tradition, an event that unites the elegance of social dance with the wonderful talents of Stanford student performers in music and merriment.

Over the years, the Viennese Ball has attracted attention from dance communities around the world. One goal this year, however, was to keep the focus of Viennese Ball on the Stanford community. While steering committees in recent years have experimented with new venues and larger dance floors, we have always tried to ensure that the Ball remains a truly student tradition by keeping costs affordable. Additionally, we made an effort to include students in every aspect of our celebration – from performers to the event photographers and the orchestra.

We want to thank all of the wonderful people who make this Ball possible: performers, musicians, honored guests, sponsors, ball assistants, and event staff. We are most grateful for the Steering Committee that has volunteered their time to make this Ball truly magnificent. All of the details and splendor tonight could not have been possible without your contributions.

Lastly, we want to thank each of you for joining us tonight in celebrating this cherished Stanford tradition. When we attended our first Viennese Ball, it seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We joined the Steering Committee because we wanted to pass on this great tradition to another class of Stanford students, and we hope you feel that same magic and enthusiasm tonight.

Alles Walzer!

EVERYONE WALTZ! The waltz is a vibrant partner dance that moves with both grace and exuberance and whose character is as elegant as it is playful.

Originating from the Austrian countryside, the waltz evolved from the traditional Ländler, a lively folk dance performed by small groups in inns near the Vienna woods. As the first dance to be performed primarily in closed position, the waltz was slow to gain acceptance in high society ballrooms, but it finally flourished with the musical talent of Johann Strauss I and his son, Johann Strauss II. By the mid-1800s, the Strauss family had all of Europe waltzing.

Today, hundreds of balls take place in Vienna during the season of Fasching, which begins in early January and ends on Ash Wednesday. Retaining the splendor and excitement of the age of Strauss, balls typically begin with a lavish opening ceremony featuring honored dignitaries, costumed dancers, and handsomely-clad young couples. The elegant atmosphere serves to make the ball all the more unforgettable as guests of all ages share the evening of dancing and merriment. Orchestras and bands provide a variety of music for all to enjoy, ranging from waltz and polka to swing and tango, and the dancing continues until dawn.

In 1978, students returning from the Stanford-in-Austria program organized the first Viennese Ball at Stanford. That first ball, held in Toyon Hall and attended by 350 students, began a tradition that would be cherished by generations of Stanford students to come. Now in its 38th year, this elegant celebration will be held at to the exquisite setting of the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara. Guests are encouraged to dress in formal attire, such as evening dresses for women and black tie attire for men.

Comfortable dance shoes are the recommended footwear. Stilettos, pumps, and other dressy shoes are forbidden for dancing, as they can be dangerous to other people on the dance floor.

DANCE ETIQUETTE The “fast lane” on the dance floor is the outer lane, and the inner lane is slower-paced. Stationary patterns should be done in the middle of the floor. For the safety of all dancers, please do not block traffic.

Both partners should take initiative in changing the couple’s speed and direction in order to prevent collisions.

Please refrain from free-style dancing during a choreographed dance.

Please do not perform aerials or other exhibitions out of consideration for other dancers on the floor.

GOLD RIBBONS Those new to Viennese Ball or looking for a fun person with whom to dance should seek out dancers wearing gold ribbons. Dancers wearing this ribbon indicate that they enjoy meeting and dancing with new people, in the spirit of Stanford social dance. To help make Viennese Ball a warm and welcoming place to dance, attendees may pick up a gold ribbon at the registration area.

HOTEL POLICY    

A coat check is available. However, due to space concerns, we ask that you bring a maximum of one bag and one coat per guest.

Please do not leave valuables in public areas. The hotel and the Viennese Ball do not assume responsibility for damage to or loss of articles left in the hotel prior to, during, or following the Ball.

No food or beverages may be brought into the hotel.

MEMORABILIA Commemorative champagne flutes will be available for purchase at the Ball.

Each flute is $8 and will be sold next to the check-in table after 9:00 PM. 8

PARKING A self-service parking garage is located at the hotel. It is complimentary and based on availability. Guests can enter the parking structure by turning onto Bunker Hill Road off of Great America Parkway and proceeding straight to the stop sign. The parking structure is located behind the hotel and offers three floors of complimentary self-parking.

Valet Parking is offered at the rate of $20 per car.

SHUTTLES

We strongly recommend that our guests take advantage of our free shuttle service to and from the Viennese Ball. The shuttles will run between the Stanford University Faculty Club and the Hyatt Regency. Please be at the shuttle stop, located in front of the Faculty Club, 15 minutes before departure, as shuttles will depart on time.

SHUTTLE POLICY

The shuttles are to remain alcohol-free. No alcohol is permitted onboard, and you will be denied entry to the Viennese Ball if you are visibly intoxicated. If you become ill on the bus, you will be subject to a cleaning fee of $500.

STEERING RIBBONS

The members of the Viennese Ball Steering Committee will be wearing blue ribbons on the evening of the Ball. If you require assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to our committee, and we will do our best to assist you.
