WELCOME! We are delighted to welcome you to the 36th Annual Viennese Ball, held for the first time at the historic Palace Hotel in San Francisco!

The Viennese Ball is a long and cherished Stanford tradition, inspired thirty-five years ago by the elegant balls that grace Vienna during the winter season of Fasching, or carnival. Throughout its history, the Ball has moved many times, from Toyon to Roble, from Palo Alto to Burlingame, and finally, to San Francisco, our beloved City by the Bay. In many ways, we consider ourselves extremely lucky. After losing our venue over a scheduling issue, we explored hundreds of other options, every venue we could find in a fifty mile radius. Only one matched all of our criteria, and, fortunately, it matched them perfectly! Thus we decided on the Palace Hotel, which has been nothing short of amazing in terms of its ambience, accommodations, and amazing staff.

We are also grateful beyond words to our amazing Steering Committee, who has been working tirelessly to initiate new measures and coordinate with new people in order to maintain and upgrade every aspect of the Ball as it moves to a new location.

Most importantly, whether it’s your first - or thirty-sixth - Viennese Ball, we want to take a moment to thank you, our attendees, for offering your heartening encouragement and honest critiques. We cannot thank you enough for the support that you have shown us, and the motivation you have given us.

As you arrive at the Palace on the night of the Ball, we hope that you will check both your coats and your trepidations at the door, and joyously and unabashedly join us in carrying on one of Stanford University’s most famous and cherished traditions. We hope to greet you in person on the dance floor; until then, we send you our heartfelt thanks for being a part of this year’s Viennese Ball, and we wish you an evening full of joy!

Alles Walzer!

EVERYONE WALTZ! The waltz is a vibrant partner dance that moves with both grace and exuberance and whose character is as elegant as it is playful.

Originating from the Austrian countryside, the waltz evolved from the traditional Ländler, a lively folk dance performed by small groups in inns near the Vienna woods. As the first dance to be performed primarily in closed position, the waltz was slow to gain acceptance in high society ballrooms, but it finally flourished with the musical talent of Johann Strauss I and his son, Johann Strauss II. By the mid-1800s, the Strauss family had all of Europe waltzing.

Today, hundreds of balls take place in Vienna during the season of Fasching, which begins in early January and ends on Ash Wednesday. Retaining the splendor and excitement of the age of Strauss, balls typically begin with a lavish opening ceremony featuring honored dignitaries, costumed dancers, and handsomely-clad young couples. The elegant atmosphere serves to make the ball all the more unforgettable as guests of all ages share the evening of dancing and merriment. Orchestras and bands provide a variety of music for all to enjoy, ranging from waltz and polka to swing and tango, and the dancing continues until dawn.

In 1978, students returning from the Stanford-in-Austria program organized the first Viennese Ball at Stanford. That first ball, held in Toyon Hall and attended by 350 students, began a tradition that would be cherished by generations of Stanford students to come. Now in its 36th year, this elegant celebration will be held at to the exquisite setting of the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. This is a great, fun dance to know for the Ball. Come learn the basics of 4 and 6-count swing and we’ll make sure to hold the door open for you at Toyon Hall!

Beginning Rotary Waltz BCSC

This will be the second kind of waltz taught during Austria Fortnight. It’s typically danced to faster waltz songs, so come prepared to spin and get dizzy at least once!

Wed, 13 Feb 6 - 8 PM

Beginning Cross-Step Waltz BCSC

An introductory/review lesson in cross-step waltz for new dancers as well as those looking for more practice.

Intermediate A follow-up lesson to our Cross-Step Waltz beginning waltz class. Come BCSC expand on your skills with cool variations.

Beginning Tango BCSC

An elegant and creative dance that is sure to catch the eye at any ball!

Intermediate Swing BCSC

A follow-up to our beginning swing lessons. Learn more variations to add to your repertoire just in time for the big day!

Wed, 20 Feb 6 - 8 PM

Beginning Salsa BCSC

You have to try this fun and sexy dance at least once! Learn the basic step and some cool spins to impress your partner!

Am Abend EVENING OF ATTIRE   

Guests are encouraged to select from various styles of comfortable formal wear suited for dancing, including suits and tuxedos for men and dresses and ball gowns for women. Black-tie formalwear is encouraged.

Please wear soft-soled shoes (no stilettos or bare feet).

It is traditional for a couple to exchange flowers: the gentleman presents a corsage to the lady, and the lady in return presents the gentleman with a boutonniere. Be sure to get the official Viennese Ball flower for 2013!

DANCE ETIQUETTE 

 

The “fast lane” on the dance floor is the outer lane, while the inner lane is slower-paced. Stationary patterns should be done in the middle of the floor. Please do not block traffic, as it poses a hazard to you and to other dancers.

Both partners should take initiative in changing the couple’s speed and direction in order to prevent collisions.

Please do not perform aerials or other exhibitions out of consideration for other dancers on the floor.

GOLD RIBBONS In the spirit of the warm and welcoming environment of the Viennese Ball, we are continuing the Gold Ribbon program this year to encourage dancers to ask people they may not know to dance. Gold ribbons available at the ball. If you are particularly open to dancing with others, you may pick up a gold ribbon at reception. We recommend tying it around your wrist. We do not intend for the lack of a gold ribbon to indicate a refusal to dance with others.

Instead, the ribbon is intended as a standing invitation on the part of the dancer wearing the ribbon. Please do not hesitate to approach these dancers to ask for a dance. Thank you in advance to our Gold Ribbon dancers for making the Viennese Ball a warm and welcoming event!

A coat check will be available. Please do not leave valuables in public areas or foyers. The hotel and the Viennese Ball will not assume responsibility for damage to or loss of any articles left in the hotel prior to, during, or following the Ball.

No food or beverages may be brought into the hotel.

SHUTTLES

We strongly recommend our guests to take advantage of our free shuttle service to and from Viennese Ball, as parking is limited at the Palace Hotel. The shuttles will run between Tresidder Union at Stanford University and the Palace Hotel.

Please be at the shuttle stop 15 minutes before departure, as shuttles will depart immediately at the posted time.

SHUTTLE POLICY The shuttles are to remain alcohol-free. No alcohol will be permitted on board and you will be denied access if you are visibly intoxicated. If you become ill on the bus, you will be subject to a cleaning fee of $500.

PARKING

The Palace Hotel has requested that Viennese Ball guests use alternative transportation and parking. We have arranged flat rate parking for the evening with Hearst Parking Center, which is located just one block away from the Palace Hotel on 45 Third Street, San Francisco. You will need to pay for and pick up your permit from Viennese Ball at the venue.

Die Musiker THE MUSICIANS FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA The Stanford Festival Orchestra comes together to perform symphonic dance music at the Viennese Ball, Stanford's most elegant gala celebration.

Composed of select student and alumni musicians, our ranks also include members of the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra (PACO) and the California Youth Symphony (CYS). Conductor Samuel Hahn, who formed the first-ever orchestra for the Viennese Ball three decades ago, returns to the podium with this year's Festival Orchestra. Kevin Hsu is the group's music director and manager. Our ensemble has worked closely with the dancers of the Viennese Ball, and we are excited to bring you classic waltzes, polkas, schottisches and more!

THE SWING SOLUTION The Swing Solution has been together since 1990 and is currently enjoying the resurgence of interest in swing music as the world's youth discovers the joys of this happy music and the wonderful dances that go with it. The members of The Swing Solution come from all walks of life, but they all share a common love of this wonderful music and a dedication to its promotion and preservation. Enter the magnificent musical world of the Beethoven Project!

The Stanford Symphony Orchestra is proud to support the Viennese Ball and our musical sisters and brothers in the Stanford Festival Orchestra.

Please join us for SSO’s season-long celebration of Beethoven’s artistic genius, to mark the opening of Bing Concert Hall, our new home. “The Beethoven Project” will encompass all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies and all five piano concertos, featuring Van Cliburn gold-medalist (and Stanford alumnus) Jon Nakamatsu.

Performances continue in March with Beethoven’s Pastorale Symphony, her Mass in C, and more! The season culminates with a twoweek tour of Europe, where SSO will give concerts in German and Austrian cities, marking milestones in Beethoven’s life. About our Sustainable Flowers The Stanford Office of Sustainability and Soulflower Design Studio present to you the official flowers of the Viennese Ball. Our corsages, boutonnieres and bouquets are all Veriflora-certified and hydroponically grown within California, to minimize their environmental impact.

The Office of Sustainability connects campus organizations and entities, and works collaboratively with them to fulfill University President Hennessy’s vision that sustainability will "become a core value in everything we do."
