Dear Readers,

die letzten Monate waren geprägt von einigen Hoteleröffnungen, die wir Ihnen in der aktuellen Sommerausgabe vorstellen dürfen.

The past few months have seen a number of hotel openings, of which we are pleased to report in our latest summer edition of VI Magazine.

So haben wir im März unser mit 557 Zimmern und einer Konferenzfläche von 3.800 m² bisher größtes Hotel – das andel’s Hotel in Berlin – eröffnet. Wenige Tage später folgte das Pannonia Tower Hotel in Parndorf/Burgenland und kurz vor den Osterfeiertagen dann das Rainers Hotel in Wien. Ein weiteres andel’s Hotel, das in einem ehemaligen Manufaktur-Komplex errichtet wurde, eröffnete im Mai in Łód´z/ Polen, zirka 120 Kilometer westlich von Warschau. Im Juni kommt noch das jüngste Hotel der VI-Gruppe, das Chopin Airporthotel in Bratislava, hinzu.

Doch Sie finden in dieser Ausgabe nicht nur die neuen VI-Hotels und Destinationen, sondern auch wie gewohnt viele aktuelle Highlights, von Veranstaltungen in den einzelnen Städten bis hin zu Wellness und Wohlbefinden mit Ayurveda. Neben dem 20-jährigen Bestehen unseres Unternehmens feiert VI noch ein zweites Jubiläum: Das Hotel Palace Praha ist heuer 100 Jahre alt. Lesen Sie über die Geschichte eines Jugendstiljuwels, das aus der Prager Gesellschaft seit 100 Jahren nicht mehr wegzudenken ist. Die Fülle der Aktivitäten, die wir im aktuellen Magazin präsentieren, ist groß, vielleicht auch zu groß, um sie alle in diesem Sommer unterzubringen. In addition to marking 20 years in the hotel management business, Vienna International is also proud to be celebrating another anniversary this year: the 100th anniversary of the Hotel Palace Praha. In March, we opened our largest hotel so far – the 557-room andel’s Hotel in Berlin, with 3,800 m² of conferencing space. This was followed just a few days later by the Pannonia Tower Hotel Parndorf in Burgenland and, just before Easter, the Rainers Hotel in Vienna. Another andel’s Hotel opened in May in a 19th-century factory complex in Łód´z, about 120 kilometres west of Warsaw. In June, we expect to open our latest hotel, the Chopin Airporthotel, in Bratislava.

The wide range of activities which we present you in our magazine is enormous - perhaps too much for one summer. But the selection we offer is sure to have something for everyone.

Das 4-Sterne andel’s Designhotel überrascht den Gast hinter der Fassade einer alten Textilmanufaktur mit zeitgenössischer Architektur und extravaganten Materialien, Farben und Formen. he andel’s Designhotel is situated directly on the grounds of the attractive Manufaktura shopping, arts and cultural centre – the heart and soul of an up-and-coming city district. The past few years have seen the creation of an over-the-top entertainment complex on a total area of 150,000 m². 300 shops, countless cafés and restaurants, a multiplex cinema, a fitness centre, a disco, a special children’s world and a museum are all housed in the ensemble of buildings that is Manufaktura. Also nearby is Łód´z’s famous Piotrkowska shopping boulevard.

Great attention was paid during the construction to preserve and restore the historic architecture of the textile mill. The structural elements such as the red brick façade, fully restored during the renovation, bear witness to the industrial origins of the building’s architecture. The cast-iron portal is from the Art Nouveau period. Inside the new hotel itself, 278 designer rooms and suites await the discerning guest. The exceptional and lavish interior design is in keeping with the proven excellence of the internationally renowned team of British architects Jestico + Whiles. Following the successful openings of the andel’s hotels in Prague, Cracow and Berlin, Łód´z represents the first time that the modern andel’s concept has been merged with the historical fabric of a building to create a monumental work of art.

The andel’s Designhotel Łód´z has the largest conference centre in the entire city. With enough space for up to 800 people, the ballroom has been designed as a venue for conferences, banquets and congresses on a grand scale. It and a further seven conference rooms are flexibly designable and flooded with natural daylight. The 1,000 m² ballroom features state-of-the-art audiovisual and multimedia equipment as well as a special acoustics system that makes it perfectly suited for concerts, theatre performances and trade fairs of all kinds. Business guests are offered exclusive use of the executive sky lounge on top floor of the hotel. The modern and lavish atmosphere of the hotel is also reflected in the international, creative cuisine of the à-la-carte restaurant Delight. The comfortable atmosphere of the hotel bar and Oscar’s Brasserie is the perfect setting for a business lunch, drinks or coffee and cake. The large spa & wellness area offers guests absolute rest and relaxation. On the top floor of the hotel, guests will find a sauna, a solarium and a fitness studio with cardio equipment as well a selection of massage and beauty treatments. Eine Stadt stellt sich vor A City Introduces Itself Direkt im Herzen von Polen, nur 120 km westlich von Warschau liegt die durch ihre Textilindustrie weltweit bekannt gewordene ehemalige Industriestadt Łód z´ – das einstige polnische Manchester. Heute strotzt die Stadt nur so vor Leben und Dynamik. Die rasante Entwicklung und der liebevolle Umgang mit der Vergangenheit machen Łód z´ einzigartig. In the heart of Poland, just 120 km west of Warsaw, lies the former industrial city of Łód´z, the Manchester of Poland, made famous by its textile industry. Today, this dynamic city teems with life. Łód´z’s rapid development and its loving care for the past make it unique among cities.

ód z´ wurde erstmals 1332 in einem Schreiben urkundlich erwähnt. Im 15. Jahrhundert stieg Łód z´ in den Kreis der Städte auf. Das erste Stadtrecht wurde 1414 nach Magdeburger Recht verliehen. Man besaß dadurch Privilegien wie die Festlegung von Handels- und Markttagen. Die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung war damit gesichert. Łód z´ sollte jedoch noch bis zur Industriellen Revolution eher an ein Dorf als an eine Stadt erinnern. Die Bevölkerung bestand größtenteils aus Bauern und einigen Handwerkern. Der heute noch erhaltene alte Marktplatz Stary Rynek mit seiner Kirche war das Zentrum von Łód z´ , wo auch alle Straßen hinführten. Erst die industrielle Entwicklung um 1920 ließ die Stadt wachsen. Einwanderer und Ansiedler aus ganz Europa

kamen nach Łód z´ , um im „gelobten Land“ zu arbeiten und reich zu werden. Die Textilindustrie blühte und den Fabrikanten folgten Kaufleute, Bankiers, Architekten und Gelehrte, die viel zum Aufschwung der Stadt beitrugen. Der Mythos Izrael Poznańskis, des erfolgreichsten Visionärs und Fabrikanten der Textilindustrie von Łód z´ , lebt bis heute auf dem Manufaktura-Areal fort. Im Herzen des ManufakturaZentrums befindet sich in der ehemaligen Appretur ein eindrucksvolles Museum, das zu einer Zeitreise von der industriellen Hochblüte bis in die Gegenwart einlädt. Die Piotrkowska-Straße ist die Visitenkarte von Łód z´ , zugleich Einkaufsstraße und Flaniermeile. Hier finden sich auch Berühmtheiten der Filmbranche in Form von Sternen in Beton verewigt. Die „Allee der Stars“ begleitet die Passanten durch die große Einkaufsstraße von Łód z´ .

Manufaktura Łód´z

Heute zählt die Stadt 900.000 Einwohner und gilt als eines von Polens Zentren für Wirtschaft, Kultur, Wissenschaft, Medizin, Handel und Religion. Die Blütezeit der Großindustrie war gleichzeitig auch eine Zeit des kulturellen Aufschwungs, dessen Erbe heute vor allem in einer Vielzahl von Festivals seinen Ausdruck findet. Die Festivals „Dialog der vier Kulturen“ und „Plus Camerimage“ sowie das Internationale Comicfestival zählen zu den Fixpunkten im Kulturjahr. 2016 wird Łód z´ den Titel der Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt tragen. Łód ´z gilt seit Jahrzehnten als das polnische Filmzentrum. Viel dazu beigetragen hat die international bekannte Filmówka-Hochschule für Film-, Theater- und Fernsehwissenschaft. Diese veranstaltet auch jedes Jahr „Mediaschool“, das internationale Festival der Filmschulen – ein Muss für junge Filmemacher. Seit 1993 findet in Łód ´z auch das internationale Festival für Filmproduzenten „Camerimage“ statt. Nationale und internationale Künstler aus der Filmwelt pilgern alljährlich nach Łód z´ , mit tausenden Fans im Schlepptau.

In the 15th century, Łód z´ was raised to the status of town – its first town charter was issued in 1414 in accordance with the Magdeburg rights, which gave Łód z´ the necessary privileges, such as the right to determine trade and market days, to ensure its economic development.

Nevertheless, until the industrial revolution Łód z´ resembled a village more than a town. The population consisted primarily of peasants and a few craftsmen. The town’s centre was its still-preserved market square (Stary Rynek) and its church. All roads led here. Łód´z truly began to grow with the development of industry around 1920. Immigrants and new settlers came

from all over Europe to work and grow rich in the “promised land”. The textile industry flourished, and the factory owners were followed by merchants, bankers, architects and scholars, all of them adding to the town’s boom times. The legend of Izrael Poznański, the Łód´z textile industry’s most successful visionary and factory owner, continues to live on in the Manufaktura. In the heart of the Manufaktura Centre, you will find an impressive museum housed in a former finishing plant, offering a journey through time from the height of the industrial boom to the present day. Piotrkowska Street – the public face of Łód z´ – is both a shopping street and a popular place for strolling. Here you will find famous film personalities commemorated by a star in the pavement. This “Alley of the Stars” accompanies shoppers on their walk along Łód z´ ’s great shopping street Today, Łód z´ has some 900,000 inhabitants and is considered one of Poland’s centres of economy, culture, science, medicine, business and religion. The flowering of big industry was also marked by a cultural renaissance whose legacy lives on in the city’s many festivals such as the Dialogue of Four Cultures, Plus Camerimage and the International Comic Festival. In 2016, Łód ´z will bear the title of European Capital of Culture. Łód´z is also the centre of Poland’s film industry, to a great extent thanks to the presence of the internationally renowned Filmówka school for film, theatre and television. Every year, the school organises Mediaschool, an international festival of film schools and a must-go for young filmmakers. Since 1993, Łód z´ has also been home to the Camerimage international festival for film producers, when national and international artists from all over the world make the yearly pilgrimage to Łód´z with thousands of fans in tow.

Industrielle Architektur Industrial Architecture ehr günstige Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen zogen um 1920 viele ausländische Geschäftsleute nach Łód z´ . Damals wurde die erste Weber- und Tuchmachersiedlung der Stadt gegründet. In kürzester Zeit entstanden Manufakturen und maschinelle Industriebetriebe. Diese wurden zunächst im klassizistischen Stil mit glatten, verputzten, grauen Wänden erbaut. Später entstand die prägende industrielle Architektur mit ihren typischen roten Ziegelfassaden kombiniert mit Bauelementen aus Gusseisen, welche meist von ihrer Formgebung her dem Jugendstil zuzuordnen waren.

Unter den mehr als 200 architektonisch äußerst wertvollen Industriegebäuden in Łód z´ ist besonders die ehemalige Textilfabrik von Izrael Kalmanowicz Poznański hervorzuheben. Die Fabrik beschäftigte damals 6.000 Personen und stellte feinste Baumwollstoffe her. Dieses Areal wurde gänzlich revitalisiert und ist heute ein einzigartiges Kultur-, Unterhaltungsund Einkaufszentrum mit dem historischen Namen „Manufaktura“. Hier werden moderne Architektur und historische Bausubstanz harmonisch und charmant verbunden. Karl W. Scheibler errichtete in Łód ´z die größte Baumwollfabrik Europas, die zu einem ganzen Industrie- und Wohnviertel heranwuchs. Die Fabrikanlage Ksie˛z˙y Młyn an der Ecke der Straßen Prze˛zdzalniana und Tymienieckiego besteht aus einer Spinnerei, einem Feuerwehrhaus, einer Eisenbahnstation, einem Krankenhaus, einer Schule, Geschäften und Arbeiterhäusern. Besonders sehenswert ist das Kraftwerk in der Fabrik. Ein Stück technischer Geschichte im Jugendstil! Nennenswert sind noch die Kopisch-Bleicherei in der Tymienieckiego-Straße, das älteste Industriegebäude der Stadt aus dem Jahre 1826. Ein beeindruckendes Beispiel der architektonischen Mischform ist die Fabrik von Markus Silberstein, die an der Piotrkowska-Straße 250 zu besichtigen ist. Erfolglos – aber das nur nebenbei. Und auch mit dem Grünanteil Wiens kann in ganz Europa keine Großstadt mithalten: Wälder, Wiesen, Parks, aber auch Gartenanlagen, Sportstätten und Felder machen mit 20.200 Hektar rund die Hälfte der Wiener Stadtfläche aus, die Donau und die anderen Wiener Gewässer gar nicht mitgerechnet.

Aber all das fällt den Wienerinnen und Wienern nur auf, wenn sie nicht zu Hause sind. Weil dann irgendwas fehlt, was das Leben halt doch und gerade in Wien so angenehm macht. Und das nicht nur für Herrn und Frau Wiener. Als in den 1970er-Jahren in der Donau ein zweites Flussbett gegraben wurde, um die Hochwassergefahr einzudämmen, entstand in der Mitte eine Insel. 20 km lang und 200 m breit, entwickelte sie sich zum Freizeitparadies der Wiener. Ungestört vom Autoverkehr sind hier Radfahrer, Jogger, Inlineskater und Spaziergänger unterwegs. Lokale mit Küchen aus allen Herren Länder siedelten sich an und es entstand die heute gern besuchte „Copa Cagrana“ – eine Urlaubsidylle, die immer Sommer niemals schläft. Sein Pendant dazu befindet sich am Wiener Donaukanal zwischen der Rossauer Kaserne und dem Urania Kino. Die „Summer Stage“ ist als Flaniermeile mit unzähligen Restaurants und Bars der beliebtest Treffpunkt an warmen Sommerabenden mitten in der Stadt und doch am Wasser. Um den Weg von der Innenstadt ans Wasser zu finden, bedarf es aber nicht unbedingt des Bootes oder der UBahn: Wien ist eine ausgesprochene Fahrradstadt. Nicht nur das dichte Netz an Radwegen (rund 1.000 Kilometer städtischer Radwege) lässt immer mehr Wienerinnen und Wiener den Drahtesel besteigen. Auch Wienbesucherinnen und besucher sind so gut unterwegs: Ob auf geführten Fahrradtouren zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten, auf einer Rundreise zu den Denkmälern der berühmten Komponisten und Dichter in den malerischen städtischen Parks entlang der Ringstraße oder auf eigene Faust mit dem Leihrad: Man ist schneller als zu Fuß und trotzdem hautnah an der Stadt.

Seinen Namen hat dieses Vergnügungsviertel von den böhmischen Arbeitern, die in den Ziegelöfen am Laaerberg und am Wienerberg arbeiteten. Eine Kantine der Wienerberger Ziegelwerke wurde damals zu einem Ausflugsgasthaus umgewandelt, andere Wirtshäuser kamen dazu und später folgten die Schausteller mit ihren Ringelspielen, Schaukeln und Schießbuden. 1922 entstand am Laaer Berg eine Filmstadt, in der Außenaufnahmen für Monumentalfilme gedreht wurden.

ome 125 years ago, the “Bohemian Prater” was built on the Laaer Berg. This amusement park received its name from the Bohemian workers who worked in the brick factories of Laaer Berg and Wienerberg. At the time, a canteen belonging to the Wienerberg brickworks was converted into a country inn, which was soon joined by other taverns and later followed by performers with their merry-go-rounds, swings and shooting galleries. In 1922, a film city was established on Laaer Berg which was used for exterior shots for film epics.

In der Mitte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts begann die Stadt Wien, einen ausgedehnten Baumbestand zu pflanzen, so dass man dort, im Laaer Wald, auf einem gut ausgebauten Wegenetz im Grünen spaziert. Ein Eingang in den Laaer Wald befindet sich gleich am Beginn des Böhmischen Praters: Man kann dort seine Botanikkenntnisse intensivieren oder aber von einer Aussichtsplattform auf den idyllischen Butterteich hinunterschauen. Dieser Laaer Wald hat den Zauber eines jungen Waldes, es gibt dort keine hohen Bäume, es ist alles sehr hell und luftig und viele Bänke oder Lagerwiesen laden zum Rasten ein.

In the middle of the 20th century, the city of Vienna began an extensive tree-planting programme, so that today the Laa Forest provides a well-developed network of walking paths. One entrance to the Laa Forest is located right at the beginning of the Bohemian Prater. The Laa Forest has all the magic of a young forest – there are no tall trees, everything is light and airy and there are many benches and meadows for rest and relaxation.

Irgendwann einmal kommt man aus dem Wald heraus und steht vor einem großen Feld, um das ein von Hecken bestandener Weg führt. Von dort hat man einen wunderschönen Blick in den Süden Wien. Zurück geht es aber dann durch das sympathisch-idyllische Vergnügungsviertel, eben den „Böhmischen Prater“. Am schönsten ist es dort, wenn man unter der Woche an den alten Ringelspielen, Minigolfplätzen oder sonstigen kindlichen Vergnügungen vorbei schlendert und sich im Gastgarten eines der Wirtshäuser Original Wiener Küche servieren lässt. In einem dieser Wirtshäuser, dem „Zum Werkelmann“ befindet sich auch ein Drehorgelmuseum. Am Südhang des Laaerbergs liegt übrigens der kleine Weinort Oberlaa, der sich noch seine Ursprünglichkeit erhalten hat.

Today, as we commemorate the 200th anniversary of his death on 31 May, this question is being asked and hopefully being answered in many books, lectures and symposia. He is accused of having written works which are too instrumental, that his pieces cannot be sung as easily as those of Mozart, that his texts are too banal, etc., etc., etc. …

Darum soll das Interesse an Haydn wieder erweckt werden. Den Anfang hat ja schon Daniel Barenboim beim Neujahrskonzert gemacht, als er den Schluss der Abschiedssymphonie aufs Programm setzte. Seit 1. April ist die Ausstellung über das „Phänomen Haydn“ zu besuchen, die in Eisenstadt an vier Orten, im Schloss Esterházy, im Haydn-Haus Eisenstadt, im Diözesanmuseum Eisenstadt und im Landesmuseum Burgenland zu sehen ist.

All the more reason to re-awaken the public interest in Haydn. The opening salvo was fired by Daniel Barenboim with his New Year’s concert, which he concluded with the final movement of the Farewell Symphony. And since 1 April, the town of Eisenstadt has hosted an exhibition on the “Haydn Phenomenon”, which can be seen at four different locations: Esterházy Castle, the Haydn House, the Diocesan Museum Eisenstadt and the Landesmuseum Burgenland.

Lesen kann man über ihn zum Beispiel – um nicht in den Verdacht des Chauvinismus zu geraten – in dem Buch des deutschen Musikwissenschaftlers und Dirigenten Hans-Josef Irmen. Aber dann sollte man ihn hören, auf die Einfachheit hören, die er in die Musik gebracht hat. Und die so schwer umzusetzen ist. Weil diese Einfachheit dann, wenn man sie nicht beherrscht, halt bald einmal langweilig klingt.

In order to avoid accusations of Austrian chauvinism, we offer a German source of reading about Haydn: a book by music historian and director Hans-Josef Irmen. Better yet would be to listen to Haydn’s music, to hear the simplicity which he brought to music that is so difficult to bring to life. Because if one has not mastered this simplicity, it sounds plain boring.

m 2. April 2009 fand im 4-Sterne Pannonia Tower Hotel Parndorf eine gelungene Eröffnungsfeier statt. 600 Gäste folgten der Einladung. Zahlreiche Prominente aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Society kamen, um das höchste Hotelgebäude des Burgenlandes kennen zu lernen. Österreichische Persönlichkeiten wie der burgenländische Landeshauptmann Hans Niessl, Landeshauptmann-Stellvertreter Mag. Rudolf Tucek, Vorstandsvorsitzender der Vienna International Hotels & Resorts, und Architekt DI Erich Paugger von Cserni & Paugger Ziviltechniker GmbH standen bei einer Pressekonferenz Rede und Antwort, die im 14. Stock mit fulminanter Aussicht auf die Region Neusiedler See stattfand, und übergaben anschließend das Hotel feierlich seiner Bestimmung.

Das 5-Sterne Hotel Savoy hatte Mitte März die Ehre, General John Craddock, den NATO-Oberbefehlshaber für Europa, unter seinen Gästen begrüßen zu dürfen. Er kam anlässlich der Konferenz der europäischen Verteidigungsminister nach Prag. Unter der EU-Präsidentschaft der Tschechischen Republik wurde die Kooperation der Europäischen Union mit der NATO diskutiert.

Anfang April fand bereits zum zweiten Mal das Coffee Festival in Opatija statt. Das Café Palme im 4-Sterne Hotel Bristol war gemeinsam mit vielen weiteren Kaffeehäusern in Opatija an dem Festival beteiligt. Es wurden traditioneller Wiener Kaffee sowie Spezialitäten serviert. Die passenden Mehlspeisen und spezielle Cocktails mit Kaffeegeschmack durften natürlich auch nicht fehlen.

Nur 46 davon konnten sich für die Bewertung qualifizieren. Das andel’s Hotel Cracow wurde mit der maximalen Punkteanzahl und 5 Sonnen als Symbol ausgezeichnet und in den international bekannten Familienhotel-Guide aufgenommen.

Das 3-Sterne Chopin Hotel in Krakau lud seine Top-Kunden zu einem Frühlingsfest. Da die Mehrzahl der Entscheidungsträger bereits Frauen sind, veranstaltete das Hotel ein originelles Schaukochen mit Küchenchefin Małgorzata Strzelecka und ihrem engagierten Team. Wie bereits in den vergangenen Jahren wurde das angelo Hotel Prague auch heuer in die neue Ausgabe des Guide Michelin aufgenommen. Es ist eine große Auszeichnung für das Hotel und seine Küche, das MichelinEmblem am Hoteleingang platziert zu sehen.

Am Sonntag dem 8. März lud das andel’s Hotel Berlin zum Tag der offenen Tür. Es kamen mehr als 10.000 Berliner, um einen ersten Blick in das extravagante Designhotel zu werfen. Der Küchenchef und sein engagiertes Team produzierten 13.800 Stück Kuchen, welche in der Folge genüsslich verspeist wurden. Phasenweise musste das Hotel wegen Überfüllung geschlossen werden.

Ende März präsentierte das bekannte Versandunternehmen QUELLE seinen neuen Sommer- und Herbst-/Winterkatalog erstmalig im Rahmen einer Modeschau in den Räumlichkeiten des andel’s Hotels Prag. Gemeinsam mit professionellen Models konnten auch wieder tschechische Künstler und Moderatoren auf dem Laufsteg bewundert werden.

Anlässlich der Eröffnung des 9. Internationalen Energiekongresses 2009 im andel’s Hotel Prague hatte das Hotel die große Ehre, den damaligen tschechischen Premierminister Mirek Topolánek als VIP-Gast begrüßen zu dürfen. Vor den 200 Teilnehmern hielt Premierminister Topolánek die Eröffnungsrede des Internationalen Energiekongresses.

At the end of March, German mail-order company QUELLE presented its new summer and autumn/winter catalogue at a unique fashion show held at the andel’s Hotel Prague. The show gave guests the chance to see Czech actors and actresses on the catwalk, in addition to the professional fashion models.

The andel’s Hotel Prague had the great honour of welcoming then-Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek among its VIP guests on the occasion of the 9th Czech Energy Congress held at the hotel. Mr Topolánek gave the opening speech for the event, which was attended by some 200 participants.

nde Februar veranstaltete das Castellani Parkhotel Salzburg seinen ersten humorvollen Krimiabend, bei dem es galt, vor Mitternacht mit viel Spürsinn und Hausverstand ein Verbrechen zu lösen. Das engagierte Küchenteam verwöhnte die Gäste mit einem viergängigen Menü, das zwischendurch von einem mörderischen Spiel begleitet wurde. Es war ein gelungener Abend mit kulinarischen Highlights verbunden mit viel Witz und Comedy. Gestartet wurde die Veranstaltungsserie 2009 mit einem „Blind Dinner“, bei dem in völliger Dunkelheit mit ausgesuchten Gaumenfreuden ein berauschendes Feuerwerk der Sinne entfacht wurde. Mit „Dinner & Crime“ hat diese Veranstaltung nun eine Fortsetzung gefunden. Aufgrund der regen Nachfrage wird der kulinarische Detektivabend heuer noch weitere vier Mal stattfinden.

The 2009 season started with a “Blind Dinner” which, in complete darkness and with a selection of tantalising treats for the taste buds, turned a simple dinner into a veritable feast for all the senses. “Dinner & Crime” represents the sequel to the “Blind Dinner”. Thanks to its great popularity, this culinary detective evening is scheduled to take place four more times this year.

„KäseStraße“ Bregenzerwald The Bregenzerwald „CheeseRoad“ Käse gehört zum Bregenzerwald wie der Rotwein zu Bordeaux. Die SennerInnen pflegen die Kühe und Weiden das ganze Jahr wie ein guter Winzer seine Reben. Wären die Alpen des Bregenzerwalds Weinberge, sie hätten die Bezeichnung Grand Cru, also beste Lage, verdient. Cheese is to the Bregenzerwald (Bregenz Forest) as red wine is to Bordeaux. The local cowherds and cheese-makers look after the cows and pastures all year round, just like a good vintner looks after his grapes. If the Alps of the Bregenzerwald were vineyards, they would earn the label “Grand Cru” – meaning best location.

Von Alpe zu Alpe schmeckt der Käse ein wenig anders. Das muss auch so sein, denn wie beim Wein spielen auch hier die natürlichen Voraussetzungen eine ausschlaggebende Rolle für das Endprodukt.

Im Bregenzerwald erzeugen 16 Dorfsennereien pro Jahr 4.500 Tonnen Käse. Sie werden von 1.100 Milchbauernfamilien täglich mit frischer, silofreier Rohmilch beliefert, und das macht den Bregenzerwald im „Ländle“ so einzigartig als Käseregion. Die Milch ist ein besonderes Qualitätskriterium, denn nur knapp 2 Prozent der Milch im EU-Raum sind silofrei. Der bregenzerwälder Berg- und Alpkäse, beides schmackhafte Hartkäsesorten, sind die Aushängeschilder der Region. Insgesamt werden 30 verschiedene Käsesorten produziert, wie der international preisgekrönte Rohmilch-Emmentaler, Schnittkäsesorten von mild bis würzig, Camemberts, Kuh-, Schaf- und Ziegenfrischkäse und Bachensteiner (Rotschmierweichkäse). Sogar einen „Wälder-Mozzarella“ gibt es. Für Käseliebhaber ist die Käsestraße Bregenzerwald mit Sennereibesichtigungen, Bauernhofführungen, Wanderungen zu den Alpen- und Handwerksbetrieben, Sennkursen und Käsespezialitäten ein besonderes Urlaubserlebnis. Überall, wo an der Straße ein Schild mit „K“ für Käsestraße zu sehen ist, sollte man die Bremse betätigen und einen Zwischenstopp einlegen.

Kampa Island When Charles Bridge begins its descent toward the Lesser Town Gate, a set of unimposing steps lead down to Kampa Island. Just south of the bridge, you will find several centuries-old houses, some with intriguing house signs, such as the house of the “Blue Fox” (no. 1) or the “White Boot” (no. 13). Shops and cafés invite passers-by to linger a little longer before going on to explore the beautiful peninsula. Because of its many canals, extensive green areas and playful alleys, the peninsula has earned its nickname as the “Venice of Prague”. In the summer, this area is still an insider’s tip for relaxing from the pulsating and scorching hot city. Both tourists as well as locals enjoy spending time in this quiet oasis in the middle of town. The Kampa Museum The Kampa Museum, which opened in 2003, is located directly on the banks of the Vltava. It contains an extensive private art collection by Jan and Meda Mládek, where you can see the work of František Kupka, a master and pioneer of abstract painting, the sculptures of Otto Gutfreund, and works by famous European artists from the 1960s. Especially worth seeing is the glass viewing platform, which offers an impressive view over the Vltava and Prague’s Old Town.

Zeit für Bukarest Time for Bucharest as Stadtbild Bukarests ist geprägt von einer erstaunlich vielfältigen Architektur. In kaum einer anderen europäischen Hauptstadt findet man auf engstem Raum eine derart bunte Mischung an einzelnen Stilen.

Die Altstadt liegt zwischen dem Platz der Vereinigung (Piaţa Unirii), dem Cişmigiu-Park, der staatlichen Oper und dem Platz der Revolution. Ein Fünftel der Altstadt wurde abgerissen, um Platz für das neue sozialistische Zentrum zu schaffen. Kilometerlange Boulevards, gesäumt von neostalinistischen Wohnblöcken für die Nomenklatura, sowie übermäßig verzierte Springbrunnenanlagen, die allerdings die meiste Zeit trocken bleiben, prägen hier das Bild. Die kosmopolitische Hochkultur und der dominierende französische Einfluss in der Architektur der Stadt brachten ihr den Beinamen Micul Paris (kleines Paris) ein. Die restliche Altstadt blieb allerdings von den architektonischen Eingriffen unangetastet: chaotisch gewachsene Viertel mit krummen Straßen, kleinen, alten Häusern und viel Grün. Von wenigen großen Achsen abgesehen, an denen die Adeligen früher ihre Paläste und Repräsentationsbauten errichteten, strahlt die Stadt einen ländlichen Charme aus. Zu den wichtigsten Straßen Bukarests gehört die Calea Victoriei (Siegesstraße). Diese Hauptstraße führt an prächtigen Gebäuden vorbei. Hier sind die prunkvolle Kuppeln, raffinierte Arkaden und hohe Mansardendächer, die mit Metallschuppen gedeckt sind, zu sehen. An einigen Stellen öffnen sich weite Plätze, wie vor dem Rumänischen Athenäum, der zentralen Universitätsbibliothek und dem königlichen Schloss. Der Parlamentspalast, bekannt als „Haus des Volkes“ ist das zweitgrößte Gebäude der Welt. Seine Grundfläche beträgt 65.000 m². Auch rund 100 Kirchen befinden sich in Bukarest. Zu den bekanntesten gehört die Stavropoleoskirche, welche aus der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts stammt. The result: mile-long boulevards lined by Neo-Stalinist apartment blocks for the ruling elite and excessively ornate fountains that remain dry most of the time. Those parts of the historic centre which were spared Communist systemisation remain an interestingly chaotic jumble of crooked streets, small houses and plenty of green. Apart from the large boulevards and avenues where Romanian aristocrats built their palaces and villas, the city has an almost rural charm. Bucharest’s most important streets and thoroughfares include Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue), a major thoroughfare in central Bucharest leading past a number of beautiful buildings and monuments featuring magnificent cupolas, sophisticated arcades and high-attic roofs covered with metal shingles. Here and there the streets open up onto broad squares in front of places like the Romanian Athaeneum concert hall, the Central University Library and the former royal palace.

The new design hotel, one of the biggest hotels in the German capital, was an immediate hit with the many specially invited guests and famous personalities from the worlds of politics, business and society. Entertainment was provided by the renowned Austrian band Jazzfrequenz and included a performance by the Phoenix Firedancers. Raus aus der Stadt – rauf auf den Berg! Out of the City – Into the Mountains! Einen Sommerurlaub mit der Familie zu planen ist nicht einfach. „Uuu, wandern, ist doch langweilig“, war alles, was wir von unserer Tochter hörten. Da gelangte ich auf die Website der CUBE Hotels und zeigte sie meiner Familie – am Ende konnten wir doch noch gemeinsam in den Sommerurlaub starten. CUBE ist alles, außer gewöhnlich! Planning a summer holiday with the kids isn’t easy. “Oh, man! Hiking is sooo boring ,” is all we could hear from our daughter. Then I found the website of CUBE Hotels and showed it to my family – and in the end, we were able to enjoy a summer holiday together after all. CUBE is everything but ordinary!

Während dem köstlichen Frühstück tauschen sich unsere Kinder schon über die unterschiedlichsten NTC Funsports aus, von denen sie gehört haben. Alles wollen sie ausprobieren: Mountain Roller, Mountain Cart und vieles mehr. Wir lassen den Kindern ihren Spaß und entscheiden uns selbst für eine gemütliche MountainbikeTour. Unser Guide weiß genau, mit welcher Tour er unsere Faszination fürs Biken wecken kann. Wir fahren einen leicht ansteigenden Weg, der immer schmäler wird und bald durch ein Waldstück führt. Die Stille des Waldes, das Zwitschern der Vögel und das Rauschen eines Baches ist schon fast kitschig. Als wir den Wald hinter uns lassen trauen wir unseren Augen nicht: eine idyllische Almlandschaft breitet sich vor uns aus, wir hören Kuhglocken läuten und sehen urige Hütten, die uns die Hektik der modernen Welt vergessen lassen. When we get to the CUBE Hotel and get out of the car, we feel a welcome breeze that helps make the summer heat more bearable. Instead of lugging our trolley cases up the stairs, we leisurely pull them along a series of ramps – called “gateways” – up to our rooms. But it isn’t until we see the “showroom” in front of each hotel room, where you can store your bike and other sports gear, that we understand the purpose of the gateways: with your bike all the way to your room! The unconventional architectural style and the modern design of the CUBE Hotel entice us to gather more impressions with a tour of the building. “Hey, look! Here’s the way to the terrace!” We join the other guests on the terrace and enjoy the evening sun together. But if relaxation is not your thing, there are plenty of other activities at CUBE as well. Anyway, exhausted from the many new impressions, we hit the sack and wonder what the next day holds in store… During the breakfast, the kids are already talking excitedly about the different types of fun sports that they’ve heard about. They want to try them all: Mountain Roller, Stanley Rider, Mountain Cart and more. We let the kids have their fun and decide to embark on a mountain bike tour ourselves.

Our guide knows exactly which tour is the right one for us. We follow a trail that slowly but surely goes up the mountain, becoming narrower all the while and finally passing into a wooded area. The stillness of the wood, the chirping of the birds and the babbling brook is almost too kitschy. As we come out of the wood, a picturesque alpine meadow opens up before us, we hear cowbells and see a landscape straight out of the Sound of Music that makes us forget our everyday routine. With all the excitement, beautiful scenery and unspoilt nature we also forget that we’re not used to such strenuous exercise – and it isn’t until evening that we notice the cramps in our calves. Good thing CUBE has everything you need for rest and relaxation after an active day. The relax area is the perfect place to end the day – in our case, with a wonderful and soothing leg massage. At dinner, the culinary highpoint of the day, we exchange our experiences of the day – and everyone wants to be the first to talk… In the end, our holiday was far from the disaster my kids had feared – it was everything but boring!

Beeren Berries Das Sammeln war eine der ersten Möglichkeiten des Menschen, sich zu ernähren und die Beeren waren da naturbedingt einer der ältesten Rohstofflieferanten. Noch immer ist es auch für den Genießer unserer Tage ein ganz eigenes Vergnügen, Beeren sammeln zu gehen.. Gathering food was one of the earliest opportunities for man to find nourishment, and berries are naturally one of the oldest sources of sustenance. Even today, many an epicure enjoys picking wild berries.

hilippe Delerm schreibt davon, wie das ist, in die Brombeeren zu gehen. „Ihr geht immer zu derselben Stelle, zu einer kleinen Straße am Waldrand. Jeder hat einen Plastikeimer dabei, in dem die Beeren sich nicht gegenseitig zerquetschen. Ohne übertriebene Begeisterung beginnt man zu pflücken. Zwei, drei Gläser Marmelade wären schon genug…“

Weil eben die Saison so kurz ist, die Beliebtheit aber sehr groß, hat das die Phantasie beim Einkochen besonders beflügelt: In den Marmeladen, Konfitüren, Gelees, Fruchtliköre und Sirups soll ja noch der Duft der in der Natur gereiften Früchte liegen. Weil aber nicht alle Beeren, die wir kaufen, im Wald wachsen, ist man schon bald dazu übergegangen, die Aromen zu verfeinern, ein wenig Abwechslung hinein zu bringen. Und es ist ja unwahrscheinlich, welche Variationen beim Einkochen möglich sind. Aus Andrea Karrers Buch „ab ins glas“ seien nur einige dieser Möglichkeiten angeführt. Um bei den Brombeeren zu bleiben, dazu passen – so schreibt sie - Limetten, Pfirsiche, Holunderbeeren oder Mangos. Als Gewürze sind besonders geeignet: Zimt, Nelken und Ingwer und Scotch. Sie bietet auch ein Nektarinen-Brombeer-Kompott an. Man kann aber über Beeren nicht reden, ohne die Erdbeeren zu erwähnen. Denn die sind bei uns wahrscheinlich die häufigsten und beliebtesten Beeren. Von

der südamerikanischen Westküste brachte der Franzose Frézier 1712 Erdbeeren, die einen angenehmen Ananasgeschmack hatten und diese Ananaserdbeere ist heute wohl die verbreitetste Sorte. Waverley Root schreibt in seinem Buch „Alles, was man essen kann“ auch davon, dass den größten Erdbeerverbrauch in der Geschichte eine Madame Tallien hatte, die gab den Saft von elf Kilo Erdbeeren in ihr Badewasser, um ihre Haut weich und geschmeidig zu erhalten. Zurück zu den Geschmackskombinationen, die man mit Erdbeeren anstellen kann: Andrea Karrer bietet Vanille und Erdbeerlikör an, Zitronenmelisse, Zitronenschale, Nelke oder Sternanis, dann extravagant grünen Pfeffer und Wodka. Oma Schreber – die vom M´einkochbuch – kennt auch eine Rubirosamarmelade, in der geben die Erdbeeren die Farbe und das Aroma und Bananen die Cremigkeit und den milden Geschmack.

All you need is a plastic container to protect the berries and the picking can begin. It’s a random process, to be taken at a leisurely pace. You only want enough to make two or three jars of jam, for autumn breakfasts.”

The season is short but the popularity high, and so human fantasy knows no bounds when it comes to making preserves: whether marmalade, jam, jelly, fruit liqueur or syrup, the nature-ripened fruits are said to retain their delicious aroma. Since not all berries that we buy grow in the woods, man soon learned to enhance the natural aroma in order to provide a little change of pace. And it is unbelievable how many different approaches to making preserves there are. Andrea Karrer’s book ab ins glas [Jump in the Jar!] presents only a few of these many possibilities. Let’s take our example of the blackberry: according to Karrer, blackberries go well with lime, peaches, elderberries or mangos. Especially suitable spices include cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and Scotch. Karrer also suggests a nectarine-blackberry compote. Of course, it is impossible to discuss berries without mentioning the strawberry, probably the most common and most popular of all berries. In 1712, the Frenchman Frézier brought strawberries from the west coast of South America

with the pleasant taste of pineapple, and this “pineapple strawberry” (the garden strawberry) is perhaps the most common variety today. In his book Food, an Authoritative and Visual History and Dictionary of the Foods of the World, Waverley Root writes that the history of the strawberry includes a certain Madame Tallien who would add the juice of eleven kilograms of strawberries to her bathwater in order to keep her skin smooth and soft. But back to the various taste combinations which are possible with strawberries: Andrea Karrer suggests a vanillastrawberry liqueur, lemon balm, lemon rind, cloves or star anise, as well as more extravagant variations such as green pepper or vodka. Oma Schreber of the seminal making preserves cookbook M’einkochbuch suggests Rubirosa jam, which gets its colour and aroma from strawberries and its creamy consistency and mild flavour from bananas.

Orangenzesten frische Waldbeeren Vanillezucker Brombeeren Orange

ür die Topfencreme den Topfen mit Vanillezucker und 100 g Staubzucker schaumig rühren. Zwei Blätter Gelatine in kaltem Wasser einweichen und ausdrücken. Danach in den Topfen einrühren und das Obers unterheben. Die Masse in vier mit Folie ausgekleidete Förmchen füllen und im Kühlschrank mindestens fünf Stunden rasten lassen. Für das Ratatouille den Kristallzucker im Rotwein auflösen und 200 g gewaschene, halbierte Waldbeeren sowie den Saft einer Orange, die Zesten und eine Messerspitze Zimt beigeben. Zuletzt die restliche aufgelöste Gelatine unterrühren, ebenfalls in vier mit Folie ausgekleidete Förmchen einfüllen und im Kühlschrank mindestens fünf Stunden erkalten lassen. In der Zwischenzeit für die Brombeersauce 200 ml Wasser und 100 g Staubzucker aufkochen und auf die Hälfte einreduzieren. Die Brombeeren im Mixer zerkleinern und durch ein Sieb in das abgekühlte Zuckerwasser streichen. Ratatouille und Topfencreme aus den Formen auf einen Teller stürzen, mit der Brombeersauce und den restlichen Waldbeeren dekorieren.

Ingredients (serves 4) 200 g curd cheese ¼l whipped cream 8 leaves gelatine 200 g icing sugar 200 ml red wine 150 g granulated sugar

20 g orange zest 300 g fresh mixed berries 1 pkg. vanilla sugar 150 g blackberries 1 orange cinnamon

o make the curd cheese cream, mix curd cheese with vanilla sugar and 100 g icing sugar until frothy. Soak two leaves of gelatine in cold water, squeeze out excess water, mix in with the curd cheese and fold in the whipped cream. Fill the mixture into four small moulds lined with foil and chill in refrigerator for at least five hours. For the ratatouille, dissolve granulated sugar in red wine and add 200 g washed and halved berries, the juice of an orange, orange zest and a pinch of cinnamon. Dissolve remaining gelatine leaf and stir in. Fill into a further four foil-lined forms and also chill for at least five hours in refrigerator. In the meantime, prepare blackberry sauce by bringing 200 ml water and 100 g icing sugar to a boil and reducing to 1/2. Let sugar water cool, chop blackberries in a blender and pass through a sieve into the sugar water. Remove ratatouille and curd cheese cream from their moulds and put on a plate. Top with blackberry sauce and remaining berries.

it viel Dynamik und gemeinsamem Engagement arbeitet Vienna International Hotels & Resorts derzeit an einem neuen exklusiven Bildband. Fantastische, kulinarische Kreationen der einzelnen VI Küchenchefs versprechen wieder ein fulminantes Werk zu werden.

Gemeinsam mit dem Medienproduktionsteam der Vienna International Hotels & Resorts wurden von den Direktoren und Küchenchefs der Hotelgruppe in vielen Arbeitsstunden Speisenvorschläge erarbeitet, Rezepte ausgewählt, aufgeschrieben und untereinander verglichen. Die Zutaten wurden speziell für Hobbyköche auf vier Personen abgestimmt und auf Richtigkeit überprüft. Seit Mitte Februar sind bereits mehr als 25 Küchenchefs nach Wien gereist, um ihre ausgewählten Speisen im professionellen Fotostudio von Lieselotte Biber, einer der derzeit namhaftesten Food-Fotografinnen Österreichs, vor der Kamera persönlich optimal in Szene zu setzen. ith plenty of dedication and team spirit, Vienna International Hotels & Resorts is already hard at work on a new and exclusive illustrated cookbook. Featuring fantastic culinary creations by the various VI executive chefs, the book promises to become a feast for the eyes.

Together with the media production team at Vienna International Hotels & Resorts, the general managers and executive chefs at the various hotels worked long and hard to select, compile and compare the many excellent recipes. With attention to detail, and keeping the needs of the hobby chef in mind, the ingredients were trimmed to serve four persons and all recipes were carefully inspected for correctness.

Since mid-February, over 25 executive chefs have travelled to Vienna to personally prepare the recipes for the camera in the professional photo studio of Lieselotte Biber, one of Austria’s most renowned food photographers. The book is set to become a stroll through the various cuisines of the Vienna International Hotels & Resorts, presenting the diverse specialities and aromas of the VI destinations in a balanced and harmonious way. The culinary journey through the world of the Vienna International Hotels & Resorts will have to wait until November 2009, however, when we present the book to the public in time for Christmas. The Culinary World of Vienna International will then be sold exclusively at the Vienna International Hotels & Resorts and via the group website at www.vi-hotels.com. For a taste of things to come, we have included here a recipe from our most recent Vienna International cookbook.

Pflaumentarte mit Zimteis Zutaten für 4 Personen fertiger Mürbteig, 400 g reife Pflaumen, 0,3 l Milch, 300 g weiße Schokolade, 8 Eigelb, 400 g Zucker, 0,6 l Sahne, 200 g Joghurteis, 2 TL Zimt Zubereitung Mürbteig ausrollen, kleine Formen damit auslegen und bei 180 Grad ca. 6 bis 7 Minuten backen. Für die Fülle Milch, Zucker und weiße Schokolade aufkochen und abkühlen lassen. Eigelb untermischen und geschlagene Sahne unterheben. Die ausgekühlten Mürbteigförmchen damit füllen. Pflaumen waschen und in dünne Spalten schneiden. Die Tartes fächerförmig belegen. Joghurteis mit Zimt verrühren und wieder einfrieren. Danach Kugeln ausstechen und vor dem Servieren auf die Tartes setzen.

Plum Tart with Cinnamon Ice Cream Serves 4 readymade shortcrust pastry, 400 g ripe plums, 0.3 l milk, 300 g white chocolate, 8 egg yolks, 400 g sugar, 0.6 l whipping cream, 200 g yoghurt ice cream, 2 tsp. cinnamon Preparation Roll out the dough into small forms and bake at 180° for approx. 6 to 7 minutes. Mix together the milk, sugar and white chocolate, heat and let cool before blending in the egg yolk and folding in the whipped cream. Fill the dough forms with the mixture when they have cooled. Wash the plums, cut into thin slices and lay out in a fan around the tarts. Mix the yoghurt ice cream with cinnamon and re-freeze. Top the tarts with a scoop of ice cream just before serving.

Stephan Prizl holte beim diesjährigen Lehrlingswettbewerb für Tourismusberufe auf der bekannten Gastronomiemesse „Gast“ in Salzburg Gold in allen Kategorien. Er überzeugte die Jury souverän mit einem fulminanten 3-Gang-Menü und ließ die Konkurrenz mit fachkundiger Unterstützung von Seiten seines Mentors, dem Küchenchef des Hotel Fuchspalastes weit hinter sich.

Die Teams der Prager Hotels angelo und andel’s lassen es sich auch nach Weihnachten nicht nehmen, das CharlottaMasaryková-Kinderheim im 5. Prager Bezirk weiterhin zu unterstützen. Jetzt wurden den Kindern mit dem bei der Weihnachtsfeier gesammelten Geld Müsli und Cerealien für die gesunde Jause und natürlich auch Süßes gebracht.
