El proyecto de reciclaje de redes de pesca descartadas de la Alianza Menorca Sin Plástico y Menorca Preservation avanza viento en popa: durante este año se centrará en su desarrollo comercial con el objetivo de afianzar y reforzar esta maravillosa red de colaboraciones.

Para quienes todavía no conozcan la iniciativa, PescART Menorca nació en 2020 como un proyecto de economía circular que busca dar salida a las redes de pesca desechadas de los pescadores para reconvertirlas en nuevos productos comercialmente viables. La motivación de la Alianza Menorca Sin Plástico para desarrollar este proyecto era clara desde un principio: intentar acabar con el significativo impacto medioambiental que este residuo estaba suponiendo para nuestro entorno. Y es que, anteriormente, a través de otro proyecto centrado en la identificación de redes de pesca fantasma, Menorca Preservation junto con Asociación Leader Illa de Menorca pudieron verificar que

The project by the Alianza Menorca Sin Plástico and the Menorca Preservation society to recycle discarded fishing nets is fully underway and this year will be concentrated on the commercial devolpment with the objective of consolidating and strengthing this wonderful network of collaborations.

For all of you who do not know about this iniciative, PESCART Menorca was founded in 2020 as a economic circular project which looks for options of recycling discarded fishing nets and repurposing them into new viable commercial products. The motivation of the Alianza Menorca Sin Plástico used to develop this project was clear from the start, their intention was to stop the significant impact caused to the environment by this residue. Previously through another project which focused on the identification of nets used in ghost fishing, Menorca Preservation together with the Asociación Leader Illa de Menorca were able to verify that around 600 discarded fishing nets were be - alrededor de unas 600 redes de pesca descartadas al año estaban siendo enterradas en el Centro de Tratamiento de Residuos por falta de alternativas de gestión de este residuo.

El recorrido de colaboraciones que hace posible que PescART Menorca sea una realidad empieza con la implicación fundamental del sector pesquero, ya que son los mismos pescadores quienes posibilitan el proyecto depositando estas redes descartadas en unos contenedores situados en los puertos de Ciutadella y Fornells, gracias a la colaboración de Ports de les Illes Balears. Acto seguido, la Alianza Menorca Sin Plástico se encarga de recoger estas redes y gestionar tanto su almacenamiento como la distribución entre los demás agentes: entregándolas a la Fundación para Personas con Discapacidad de Menorca, que colaboran con la iniciativa tratando y gestionando el residuo para luego facilitar el maravilloso trabajo de las artesanas que, con su pericia y saber hacer, ing buried in the Residual Treating Plant instead of using alternative forms to process them.

The circle of collaborations which make PescART possible begins with the fundamental implication of the fishermen who deposit their unusable nets into containers situated in the ports of Ciutadella and Fornells with permission by Ports of the Illes Balears (Local Port Agencies of the islands). Alianza Menorca Sin Plástico then collects the nets and handles the storage and the distribution between the other agents. They are delivered to the Fundación de Personas con Discapacidad de Menorca (The Foundation of People with Disabilities ) whose members with their great skill and dexterity treat and manage the residue and convert it into wonderful economically viable handmade pieces of art.

It is amazing how simple pieces of discarded fishing net can become something so incredibly reciclan este material creando nuevos productos económicamente viables.

Finalmente, lo que se puede crear a partir de una materia prima tan simple como una red de pesca, es sin duda sorprendente: desde joyería, como collares y pendientes, hasta lámparas, bolsos, libretas, enormes tapices o incluso esculturas decorativas.

Inicialmente, la fase piloto del proyecto contó con la participación de las artesanas Silvia Vivó, Júlia Triay, Caramuixes y Magda Triay, cuya colaboración fue crucial para definir la potencial viabilidad de la iniciativa. A través de varios talleres, las artesanas elaboraron diferentes productos, cuya viabilidad económica fue estudiada. Todos los productos creados fueron presentados en torno a una exposición y, además, se pusieron a la venta en diferentes puntos, consiguiendo destacables resultados: más de 900 personas visitaron beautiful such as pieces of jewellery, necklaces and earrings, lamps, bags, notebooks, large tapestries and even decorative sculptures.

In its beginnings the first trial part of this project boasted of the collaboration of great artesans such as Silvia Vivó, Jùlia Triay, Caramuixes and Magda Triay whose collaborations in the project were crucial in order to define the potencial viablitly of this iniciative. These artesans through several workshops elaborated different objects whose economic viability was then studies. All the handmade products were presented in different PescART exhibitions around the island visited by mre than 900 people and over150 products were sold at the different craft fairs. Once this phase was closed Alianza worked hard to make the products even more viable, they incorporated new collaborators, artensans and other producers who could reconvert this material.

Concluida esta fase, la Alianza ha seguido trabajando para reforzar los productos que resultaron viables, incorporar nuevas colaboraciones tanto de personas del gremio de la artesanía como de otros sectores productivos con capacidad para dar un nuevo uso a este material.

La Alianza, formada por Menorca Preservation, GOB Menorca, OBSAM, Leader Illa de Menorca y 0 Plastic Menorca, trabaja para fomentar de manera activa la reducción del plástico en la isla. En cuanto a PescArt Menorca, nada de esto habría sido posible sin el formidable trabajo llevado a cabo por el equipo de la Alianza Menorca Sin Plástico junto con Menorca Preservation, que además de mantener vivo el vínculo entre los distintos agentes, también se encarga de organizar nuevos talleres para seguir sumando colaboraciones, potenciar la comercialización de la marca al mismo tiempo que organiza interesantes formaciones para las personas involucradas y, por supuesto, de seguir consiguiendo financiación con la que continuar fortaleciendo la estructura del proyecto.

La fase piloto de PescART Menorca contó con el apoyo económico de Menorca Preservation, la IUCN y la Fundación Fomento del Turismo de Menorca. Actualmente, gracias a los resultados obtenidos en la primera fase, ha conseguido apoyo y financiación por parte del Ministerio de Derechos Sociales del Gobierno de España y la Secretaría de Estado para la Agenda 2030, así como de la Fundació Sa Nostra y CaixaBank en el marco de la convocatoria de Medio Ambiente 2022.

La Alianza formed by Menorca Preservation, GOB Menorca, OBSAM, Leader Illa de Menorca y 0 Plastic Menorca, work in unison in order to foment the reduction of plastic on the island. With reference to PescART, none of this would have been possible if not for the formidable work carried out by the Alianza Menorca sin Plástico team in conjunction with Menorca Preservation, who as well as maintaining the connection between the two associations is also in charge of the organisation of new workshops so as to attract new collaborators, foment the commercialisation of the brand and at the same time organise interesting training programmes for those people involved and of course carry on looking for financing with which they can continue to reinforce the project.

The first trail phase of PescART was aided by the economical support from Menorca Preservation, the IUCN and the Fundación del Turismo de Menorca. Nowadays thanks to the results obtained in the first phase the Ministerio de Derechos Sociales and the Gobierno de España and the Scretaria de Estado have given their support and financial aid for the coming year of 2023, as well as the funds raised by the Fundació Sa Nostra and Caixabank in the Medio Ambiente (environmental area) convention in 2022.
