It is hard to believe that it is already December again. I am sure that you are getting ready for the holidays in your home and hope you are thinking of your Sisters and friends again this year as this pandemic seem to stretch longer than we thought possible. I realize it is becoming harder to maintain your lodge connections as we cannot see and visit each other as we used to, but I hope you take the time to get together whenever you can and try to “visit” our virtual Tivoli lodge or our partner, NFDA, who both have had several online interactions and programs of interest to all.

This year seemed to have flown by compared to 2020, possibly because we have been busy. We successfully completed our fundraiser challenge to support a matching grant for the archival preservation position at the Museum of Danish America. This was a major accomplishment with us donating over $43,000 and ensuring the preservation of our many Sisterhood treasurers which we could not have completed so fast if not for all the generous Sisters and friends of the Sisterhood.

We added several new items to the Sisterhood butikken and hope you like them! Please do keep your suggestions coming so we can continue to have a variety of items based on what you all would like. Your Board was also able to meet face to face for the first time in over 18 months, which was fantastic! It really invigorated us all and helped us focus and reconnect to keep us going in the same direction. We hope we will be able to meet again in the Spring as we plan for the upcoming District Conventions.

On a different matter I wanted to remind you that we are planning on going to Denmark in August 2022, and currently registration is open to Sisterhood members and their guests. Come January 1st registration is open to all, so if you plan on going, I suggest you sign up with Connie Schell soon. This could also be the perfect Christmas present for someone special. I hope to see you there and in the new year.

Dear Sisters, It's December again and it's very hard to believe!

What a whirlwind 2021 has been.

I just moved into my very first house in mid-November and have been enjoying settling in.

We have also put up our Christmas tree and have decorated it with all of the usuals­-childhood ornaments, Danish flag garlands, candles, collectible Danish ornaments and, of course, a star on the top of the tree. I am already planning our julefrokost this year with a small group of close friends. It will be wonderful to gather again, after having to do a Zoom version of julefrokost last year.

I am also looking forward to the New Year and hope that it will continue to improve upon the last few years.

As for the Danish Sisterhood News, we'll have some fun things coming up in 2022 and can't wait to share all of them with you. Please continue to share YOUR stories with us, as this newsletter is by and for the members of the Danish Sisterhood!

I hope that all of you are happy and healthy and that you will each have a lovely holiday season.

Officer Corner Tools to begin a fresh start in 2022 Glædelig jul og godt nytår!

Do you have a Facebook page, Twitter account, Instagram or LinkedIn account? Lodges who adopt social media may benefit from increased interaction, two-way communication and improved relationship with fellow sisters.

The coronavirus has changed the way we have communicated in the last two years. During that time we no longer had face to face meetings or host large events, instead we were left with only one option virtual events. The Zoom platform helped us host a variety of these events.

Depending on where you currently meet some of us still have to use a virtual meeting. I think mixing the way you meet in person or virtual throughout the year is something to consider.

When my lodge held our Zoom meetings we had sisters attend who usually could not attend in person, either due to distance or health concerns.

This might help to encourage more members to attend your meetings.

Ideas you can use when you hold a virtual meeting: Power point presentations

• What are the traditions in Denmark

• History of the Danish royal family

• Hygge

• Danish Inventors

• What Denmark is famous for

• Why is Denmark reported to be one of the happiest countries in the world?

Event ideas

• Æbleskiver breakfast

• Frickadellar or smørrebrød luncheon

• Bingo

• Lucia procession, Danish Christmas Service or Juleaften party

• Fastelavn party In person meeting ideas

• Flower arranging (do you know a florist)

• If you have a kitchen, teach different Danish recipes

• Meet somewhere for lunch or dinner

• Show and Tell bring something about your Danish heritage

• Bring in a map of Denmark put pins on the towns your members or their family is from

• Make a craft

• Cookie or recipe exchange

• End your meeting with a Danish pronunciation lesson

When you’re planning your meetings for 2022 remember the mission of the Danish Sisterhood. When the National officers meet for their board meeting we always begin the meeting reciting our mission statement. “The mission of the Danish Sisterhood of America is to strengthen, maintain and preserve the Danish heritage and traditions for future generations”.

I have only given you a fraction of ideas you can use when planning your meetings.

Enumclaw, WA Lodge #75 Nov. Bazaar 2021 Outstanding! Is the word that describes this year’s Lodge #75 November Bazaar.

Our first event since the pandemic started. We had to pivot a bit from last year, due to Covid-19. We did not serve a lunch this year, instead we sold two types of soup in to-go containers and the result was fantastic. People were happy to have the event back and encouraged us to do more in the coming years. Our community is extremely supportive of our Historic Danish Hall.

The hall was filled to brim with homemade baked goodies, handcrafted items, vintage treasures, raffle prizes and we even had room for three vendors.

Update from Davenport Lodge #3 Lodge #3 in Davenport, Iowa wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy 2022!

Due to Covid we have been meeting by Zoom and did celebrate our Lodge anniversary in September via Zoom.

Many of us are hoping to be able to safely physically meet again soon, but until then we will keep Zooming and hope for a much better new year.

Update from Lodge #102

At our September meeting, we enjoyed the fall weather and being together again. We had two new members with two children joining us at the last meetings. The meetings have been mostly used to plan our future events. We continue to send our monthly collections to the museum and a card was sent to Jan Broers as she recovers from her broken hip. We had a potluck in October at our Luther Memorial Church community center and worked on decorations for the Christkindlemarket festival. Cheryl Brinkman brought samples that will be used. We planned our Christmas party which we missed having last year.

Our Heartland District Convention will be held April 1-3, 2022. This is also in our plans as we are the host. Jeanne Clark presented a program where she read an article on the memories of her Danish family’s education and her own. We then told about our school years and of our parents and grandparents. Many could share memories of Danish backgrounds. We love our Danish connections!

Resolution: Marlene J. Colbert The sisters of Lodge #3, Davenport, Iowa, were saddened with the passing of Marlene J. Colbert on November 9, 2021. Marlene was born in New Liberty, Iowa on June 1, 1932 to Frank and Florence (Fahrenkrug) Meewes.

Marlene is survived by her children Raymond Colbert, Sharon Miller (Tom) and Donald Colbert and her grandchildren, Jeremy Farnum (Becky), Brian D. Lamb, Kelly Colbert and Brenda Colbert. She is also survived by 9 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Marlene was predeceased by her parents, her husband Donald Colbert, her son Randy and her siblings, Delmar Meewes (Lucy) and Jean Mueller (Elmer) and her pet, Sammy.

Marlene joined Lodge #3 in February of 1990 and was present at our monthly meetings until her health declined in 2015. Marlene will be missed.

A memorial service was held on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Runge Mortuary, Davenport, Iowa.

DSS Angel Member Status

Address Changes If you have moved please use this form to notify the Danish Sisterhood of America.

The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available:

• A change of beneficiary to: Danish Sisterhood of America or, • A change of beneficiary to one of the national scholarship funds. Be specific, ie: Betty Hansen Scholarship, Past National Officers, Camp Grant, etc.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or the National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change Form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you'd be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category can participate by donating $1,000 to the Danish Sisterhood of America.
