BEAUTY MEETS MIRACLE BERRY Words: Jenna Moore

CAROLINE LORINET Caroline Lorinet is a former international top model who — on a personal quest to combat her skin troubles — has created a self-named natural, organic, cosmeceutical skincare range. At 16, Paris-born Caroline Lorinet catapulted onto the European modelling scene. Eight years later, while busy working as a covergirl for magazines like Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire, a motorbike sent her flying. “My face hit the concrete,” remembers Caroline. “I woke up in an emergency ward and refused to look in a mirror.” She credits determination and the practice of Buddhism (SGI) with her ability to overcome the disfigurement and make a full recovery. When she began working again, Caroline’s agency asked her where she’d like to work. She chose Australia. While there, New Zealand’s modelling doyenne Maisy Bestall-Cohen requested her for a Fashion Quarterly cover. “I loved New Zealand and stayed six months,” Caroline says. Contractual obligations then took her to Japan, but life took another twist and she became a mother and settled with her family in New Zealand. Now 49, Caroline is in front of the camera again as the face of Caroline Lorinet sensitive skincare. “I’ve always had sensitive skin — in my 20s I had problems with dermatitis and allergies,” she says. “Then in my late 30s it changed dramatically; a

Next month ‘Light Show’ will open at Auckland Art Gallery, having previously sold-out London’s Hayward Gallery. Some of the artworks haven’t been shown for decades. “’Light Show’ is an immersive multi-sensory experience that celebrates and plays with perception,” says Rhana Devenport, Auckland Art Gallery’s Director. “We are delighted to be the first to present this major exhibition to New Zealand audiences on its global tour.” Devenport says that it affords Kiwis the chance to enjoy a wonderful selection of, “extraordinary international art works” that “offer rare and unforgettable experiences." The use of light in art is nearly as old as art itself. Shadow puppetry was known to have taken place as far back as the 4th century BC. The Egyptians and Aztecs both harnessed the sun’s rays in temples and pyramids, while stained glass can be traced to Ancient Europe. As critic Hillary M. Sheets explains in her Art World piece: “The interplay of dark and light has been a theme running from Greek and Roman sculpture to Renaissance painting to experimental film.” But with the advancement of technology, she goes on, from the glow of the electric light bulb to the computer monitor, “artists have been experimenting with actual light as material and subject.” It is the first time that ‘Light Show’ will have been exhibited outside Britain, and it will make its way back to Europe via Australia and the Middle East. Hayward’s Gallery curator, Dr Cliff Lauson, describes the exhibition as a visual and bodily experience that explores light as a sculptural medium that will even go as far as to transform the way we perceive the world around us. He continues: “from atmospheric installations to intangible sculptures that you can move around and even through, visitors will experience light in all of its spatial and sensory forms.”

Fittingly, ‘Light Show’ opens the same weekend (11th October) as our city’s Diwali celebrations in honour of the Hindu Festival of Lights. It’s organised by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), along with the Asia New Zealand Foundation, and ATEED Chief Executive Brett O’Riley promises it will be one to remember. “Auckland is shaped by its people, its heritage and traditions,” he says. “Diwali Festival gives our large and vibrant Indian community an opportunity to come together and share this much-loved cultural tradition with all Aucklanders in a truly joyful occasion that the whole family will love.” The following month we’ll be celebrating Ponsonby’s fifth ‘Art in the Dark’ under the theme ‘Out of Nothing’. Director Celia Harrison says the exhibition frees the artists to do as they please: “From nothing, great things can happen,” she says. “Something small or insignificant can become monumental - like a tree growing from seed. What we see is not always what we get and this theme celebrates that. With ‘Out of Nothing‘, artworks will emerge from the darkness of the trees and reveal themselves to the audience, who will see Western Park, and art, in a new light.” New Plymouth’s award-winning TSB Bank Festival of Lights (www. festivaloflights.co.nz) will stretch over Christmas and into the New Year, and if that’s still not enough dazzle, head over the Tasman to Vivid Sydney (www.vividsydney.com), an 18-day extravaganza of “light, music and ideas”. This year’s event, by 140 artists from 15 countries, attracted over 1.4 million visitors. It sure promises to be an illuminating few months ahead.


Electric Cars: A Fine Balance Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

A study by the University of Victoria, Australia concluded that the number of Kiwis genuinely willing to invest in electric cars would dramatically decrease the volume of greenhouse emissions from our roads, if the cars were more readily available. “I surveyed people intending to buy a car in the next five years and found that if electric vehicles were easy to buy now, 20% would choose them,” says PhD researcher Doug Clover, who has previously worked in energy and transport policy roles for government agencies. “Plug-in hybrid cars are the most popular option, followed by city EVs, or small electric vehicles.” Globally, these low- and zero-emissions vehicles may seem to be the Holy Grail of green transportation, but there’s rather a large catch. The emissions – or at least a significant portion of them – simply become another industry’s problem. Charging of those cars requires power. “Under current conditions,” continues Cover, “with a low price on carbon, it still makes economic sense to use coal plants to meet increasing demand for electricity. The price of carbon needs to rise to ensure this rising demand for electricity is met through the use of renewable energy, which we have plenty of in New Zealand.” So are hybrid and electric cars really the answer? Or are they driving us from the frying pan into the (coal) fire? Automobile pollution – whether the vehicles are electric or not – begins way before cars are driven from the forecourt. According to the California Energy Commission, up to 20% of a car’s lifetime greenhouse gas emissions occur during the manufacturing stage. Ironically, the most famous green ride of them all, Toyota’s Prius, in its production stage emits more poisons than its petrol-powered peers. One of the biggest issues with electric and hybrid vehicles is the batteries. Whether they are of the nickel-hydride or the lithium-ion kind, their production relies on the mining of rare earth metals, which is

itself a savage process. The battery manufacturing process then uses toxic metals treated with harsh chemicals and solvents with one by-product, sulphur hexafluoride, being up to 20,000 times worse than CO2 in terms of global warming (though C02 still currently comes out way on top due to sheer volume). Neither, do those cells then last forever. “When a battery can no longer power an EV,” says Clover, “it still retains around 80% of its capacity. We need to be looking at ways of reconditioning them and selling them for other purposes.” A contentious 2012 Norwegian study by the University of Science and Technology stated that, “the global warming potential from electric vehicle production is about twice that of conventional vehicles… a more significant reduction on global warming could potentially be achieved by increasing fuel efficiency.” However, the report did also find that “electric vehicles powered by the present European electricity mix offer a 10% to 24% decrease in their global warming potential relative to conventional diesel or petrol vehicles.” The study’s author, Professor Stromman concluded: “if you are considering an electric vehicle for its environmental benefits, first check your electricity source and second look closely at the warranty on the batteries.” With New Zealand’s array of sustainable power, it’s fertile land in every sense. There are around 2.6 million light vehicles on our roads, but presently only a few hundred of those are electric. The biggest barriers, says Doug Clover, are high purchase prices and limited driving ranges and access to battery charging facilities: “if the government want to encourage uptake of EVs, what would make the most difference is having a network of easily accessible charging points, especially for those living in apartments or with no garage.” Let’s hope they’re listening.

Verve: Give us your overall impression of the Honda Jazz and your driving experience. Jay: From the first moment I pushed the start button, I thought WOW! This car is made for a lot of fun. It drives great, looks great, and to be honest, I didn’t want to give it back. I’ve been in the market for a bigger car, but now I’m not sure if a gas-guzzler is what I want. The Honda Jazz ticked ALL the boxes and I would highly recommend it; at least a test drive so you can see for yourself. Debbie: In three words — fun, fast and spacious. I just loved driving the Sporty Jazz Mugen. Totally user-friendly and welldesigned. V: Tell us how the Honda Jazz looks on the inside.

Quite simply the whole kit and caboodle; well positioned and easy to use. Great sound too. V: What do you like best about the Honda Jazz?

J: I was really impressed with the styling. It felt bigger inside than I expected for a small car. Well-supported seats, easy-touse touch screen. All-in-all, a very comfortable experience. D: Very slick and stylish, making the most of space with pockets, cubbyholes and drink-holders. Lots of legroom and storage. V: Does the Honda Jazz work as a family car? J: Again, for a small car, it is roomy. It fits two adults, two teenage kids and some luggage with no problem. There is

Finnish Designers on Top of the World Words: Melanie Dower

Helsinki, the world’s second-most northern capital, continues to lead the way in design with new takes on old traditions. Finnish design came into its own in the postwar years, when artists like Ilmari Tapiovaara created works inspired by limited resources and small living spaces. In an attempt to encourage people to embrace austerity, a sense of beauty was introduced into everyday items and Finns were encouraged to recognise quality products — a value still inherent today. Finnish designers like Aalvar Aalto were also moving away from straight lines and bringing the natural surroundings into their works. His iconic vase is said to mimic the movement of a Sami woman’s dress or the flow of the country’s lakes. Aalto’s influence can be seen today in edifices such as Kampii Chapel. Like most European capitals, Helsinki is a city hewed from stone, however, due to the forested landscape, wood has always been the preferred medium for building. Built in 2012 as part of the World Design Capital programme, the Chapel sits like a warm, wooden egg nestled into the concrete womb of the city. It won designers K2S Architects the International Architecture Awards in 2010. Big names like Marimekko are still prominent on the Finnish scene, with their bold textiles bringing pops of colour into the dark Nordic winters. A current exhibition at Kiasma teams 16 contemporary designers with the Finnish design house for new takes on its signature themes. Artists were invited to use Marikmekko’s materials and production processes in new ways and the results include paintings, photographs, sculptures, fashion and ceramics. Just outside Kiasma sits Salakauppa (sala — secret, kauppa — shop). Designers Aamu Song and Johan Olin of COMPANY visit traditional factories in Finland and create new designs based on each factory’s story. Using traditional skills and local materials the team design quirky and modern takes on familiar Finnish household items. With its connection to the natural world and willingness to create new forms from traditional methods, Finland in many ways leads the design world from its position on top of the globe.

LYNNE HUNT THE TALENT BEHIND LAUCALA ISLAND’S UNFORGETTABLE INTERIORS

Lynne Hunt is admired for the interior design of many outstanding projects, for example, The Jumerirah Lowndes Hotel in London, the Intercontinental Mar Menor in Spain, the Brompton Bar and Grill in London, as well as the amazingly integrated villas on Laucala Island (see previous article). These showstoppers, completely encompassed the stranded-inparadise vibe, and were a result of Lynne’s talent and aesthetic. Verve Magazine is privileged to bring you this mini-interview with Lynne, one of the world’s leading interior designers. Verve: When you were approached to do the interior design at Laucala Island you must have felt huge apprehension yet utter excitement. Was this the first interior you had done for a resort such as this? Lynne: I was very excited to be involved in such an idyllic project and in such an exotic location. I have worked on many hotels and resorts throughout my career, so in that respect I was not overwhelmed but excited by the challenge and the creative opportunity. V: We walked into our room at Laucala Island and felt it was pure understated luxury. How did you achieve this? L: We worked closely with the architects and owner on space planning and scale of the spaces. Then the luxury came from the finishes, the quality of the furnishings and custom designs we were able to create that are unique to Laucala. V: The lighting was something that we thought had been mastered to perfection. What was your thought process in creating the lighting? L: We wanted to create an authentic experience and the Fijian people have homes that are somewhat dark and therefore protected from the elements, be it rain or sun. We wanted to work with that feeling and to create a play on light with a cocooned feeling within the rooms.

V: Lynne, could you talk us through the creative procedure? L: We initially started with a visit to Laucala and then we did many research trips to museums in Suva, other hotels, and then lots of reading and reviews of books and reference literature were all used to start the creative process. V: Staying on Laucala Island must have been a treat — or was it? Can you describe a typical day on the island whilst you were going through the creative process? L: Staying on Laucala now that the design has been realised is indeed a dream and a privilege. During the construction period it was hard work — starting at 9am and working through until sunset and then staying in not so glamorous portocabins on the beach and wearing shorts and timberlands! Of course the natural beauty of the island was always there, which was overwhelming and therefore a pleasure. V: What was the best thing about this job? L: I think the location, the team, the owner, and having the opportunity to create something truly unique. It has been an amazing experience for me!

Her broad experience in interior design and project management has mainly been in the hotel and leisure industries, but also includes luxury residential and corporate office interiors. Lynne formed Hunt Hamilton Zuch in 1993 and continued to specialise in luxury interiors. The business became incorporated as a Limited Company in 2002, and was recently relaunched as Lynne Hunt London at the beginning of this year.

Frances Cooper: Laying the Foundations of Success Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

“I’ve always been happy with a pencil in my hand,” says Frances Cooper. “I wouldn’t say drawing necessarily came naturally — growing up is a constant struggle of where you want to be and where you want to go — but putting pen to paper was something I was certainly comfortable with. An easy articulation of what I was thinking.” That talent last year saw her scoop top international gong, the Architectural Reviews Global Architecture Graduate Award, for her re-imagining of Wynyard Point as a post-industrial port. Her master’s thesis project, Architecture of the Synthetic, the Spectacular and the Belligerent, came top of 700 entries, with a proposal that included creating new grounds using synthetic materials. “That area is a very special place,” says the architectural graduate. “I was quite dissatisfied with the urban scheme that had been put forward. I felt it could have been anywhere else and that it was not specific to being on the reclaimed land. The project was partly in response to the increasingly private nature of our waterfront, as well as just starting something brand new. The site is fascinating to me. It’s an interesting piece of land in New Zealand’s history. The whole project resides within the wider argument, that whole discussion of ownership specifically, the foreshore and seabed.” The concept caught the eye of renowned Kiwi architect and author David Mitchell, who invited her to be part of the New Zealand team at this year’s Venice Architectural Biennale. “I travelled over to Italy for a couple of weeks for the June opening,” says Cooper. “It was my first trip to Europe and was a wonderful, wonderful experience.” A highly inspirational destination to study architecture?

“It’s overwhelming, and at times baffling. Not just the architectural aspect, but the complicated series of stories that go with them, particularly in Venice. The buildings unwrap. Speaking with the locals, each one would have an incredible legend, whether it be about Marco Polo, Napoleon, the Black Death or a young man trying to propose to a princess. What was truth was not always so clear, but it was intensely fascinating nonetheless.” Cooper also travelled to Florence and Milan, the latter, she says, in terms of spread and scale is similar to Auckland. I ask how Auckland design compares. “In an urban sense, we’re certainly learning lessons,” she says. “There is good architecture, wellplaced, well-situated and carefully speculated upon. The projects that actually get built — and the handful that don’t — are wonderful notions. Some of it comes from borrowing, sometimes looking to Australia, in the past Wellington, but maybe now more so Christchurch. There’s a style that, for me, couldn’t really go anywhere else other than Auckland.” The geography, too, plays an integral part. “We’re an island and certain things are built here in certain ways because of that fact,” continues Frances. “The remoteness can be limiting in terms of what’s imported and what is locally available.”

I ask if the isolation influences the design psyche. “I think it has an effect on us all, it’s inherent,” she says. “To leave this place, you have to get on a plane, which is a bit strange when you think about it. You can’t just drive across the border. Leaving and coming home become marked as significant events. Also, being made up of many islands, the unique topography and dramatic climate plays a part. The fact that we’re not a big enough landmass to affect the weather, that it just kind of rolls over us, there’s something significant about that. There’s something of that in us all I think, a little bit.”

Small but perfectly formed

Higher-density residential development is (literally) on our doorstep, but good design can circumvent the pitfalls to create liveable neighbourhoods, says Dan Heyworth, CEO of design-and-build company Box™. The challenges of building on smaller city-fringe sites have been highlighted by the media recently, with the provision for higher-density zones in the Auckland Unitary Plan. This tighter-fit future is causing some concern for homeowners who value their privacy and still cling to the quarter-acre dream. Yet the reality is that designing for in-fill sections is now the norm — and it’s a job that should not be left to amateurs. How do you maintain that sense of light and proportion in a home that is squeezed onto a 350-square-metre piece of land? How do you still include all the conveniences that today’s families demand? The solution is two-fold: change your mind-set and call in a good architect. Learn to value quality over quantity Rather than a focus on constructing ‘McMansions’ that sprawl over all available land and eat up every inch, ask: “how much space do we actually need?” In order to provide a larger home, but simultaneously keep overall costs down, many building companies down-spec fixtures and fittings. Savvy homeowners are increasingly opting for a less-is-best approach. They value good design over big design, which leaves some room for landscaping. These green areas between dwellings were the key idea behind the original development of ‘garden’ suburbs. It’s all in the plan A double-storey home is probably going to be the approach for an in-fill site, but there are architectural tricks that avoid ‘dead’ space within this two-floor footprint. For instance, corridors are

unnecessary in any floor-plan. A clever way of giving the master bedroom a more capacious feeling is to create a walk-through wardrobe that leads to the en suite as we did in one Box™ house in Remuera. Often, when space is at a premium, an island bench can be omitted. A dining table placed directly in front of the kitchen becomes another work surface and acts as a natural gathering space instead. Is it really necessary to have a downstairs loo? You may want to omit this to create more storage under the stairs. Study areas with a built-in desk ledge can be slotted into nooks and crannies. A sloping ceiling in the upstairs zone allows bedrooms to feel larger. Keep it simple Using too many materials in a compact home just complicates matters and makes the dwelling feel smaller. Run the same flooring throughout; sometimes using the same tile indoors and out brings a more expansive feel. Naturally, don’t include a level change between the outdoor area and the inside, as this will bring a seamless flow to the layout. Use only cavity sliders between rooms and visual dividers such as timber-slatted screens or shelving units to define open-plan spaces. Keep the colour palette consistent. The magic of multi-tasking Create ‘flexi’ rooms, for example, a bedroom that can be converted into a study or television lounge. Install a tilt-away bed or, better still, get your architect to design one into the plan. Turn the roof above the double garage into a deck as an added alfresco area. Look outside The more spaces that open directly to the outdoors, the roomier a house feels. Using full-height joinery and glazing further enhances this connection. Designing a wrap-around alfresco zone where, for instance, there’s a kitchen terrace, decking that opens off the living room and an outdoor dining area linked to the indoor dining, is important. By creating a covered patio you’ll ensure that in rainy weather the home can still be opened to the elements, so occupants don’t feel cooped up. On a small section, there’s unlikely to be much lawn, but make the most of the landscaping features. Any retaining walls should double-up as either bench seating (there may not be room for a table and chairs) or built-in planter boxes.

MASTER STOVE MAKERS The Esse Ironheart solid fuel cooker was launched in 2004 to celebrate 150 years of Esse Cookers, and is still a best seller. Painting a World of Possibility: ANNIE SLOAN’S EXPRESSIVE PAINT INFUSES VERSATILITY AND FUN INTO EVERYDAY RE-DECORATION

Renovating through painting can be truly therapeutic and fun, an empowering tool for the human spirit. BEEING FRIENDLY IN YOUR GARDEN

While I’ve always found bees interesting, our relationship has at times been rocky. On the plus side they provide honey and account for approximately 80% of all insect pollination (which is crucial to our survival). But detracting from this is their occasional tendency to sting. A tendency that once reduced me to lurching zombie-like down a street in Christchurch (much to the amusement of some spectators) after both my feet were stung.

‘Beeing Aware’ can also be fun and provides the perfect excuse to grow plants that help bees and potentially add a dizzying array of scents and colours to your garden. While many plants will provide bees with nectar, I’ve chosen some of my favourites, which will hopefully provide you with some planting ideas for your garden.

But at the end of the day, the importance that bees play environmentally and economically, and the pleasure I gain watching them work in the garden, more than makes up for their ability to sting. Despite their importance, bee numbers are declining globally at an alarming rate as the impact of the varroa mite, foulbrood and Colony Collapse Disorder is felt. To raise awareness The National Beekeepers Association has dubbed September ‘Bee Aware’ month, and as such I thought now was the perfect time to look at how we as gardeners can help. ‘Beeing Aware’ while gardening shouldn’t be difficult, though particular care is needed if you need to spray with insecticides. Even organic sprays such as pyrethrum will kill bees if they are applied on plants when they are active. To reduce the effect on bees try spraying in the evening when they aren’t active and when possible use spray options that won’t harm them (if you are unsure, feel free to ask for advice at any Kings Plant Barn store). Lauren Palmer — Industrial Designer, Fisher & Paykel Words: Louise Richardson

Her absolute passion for what she does is evident in the voice of bright, bubbly Victoria University graduate Lauren Palmer who was appointed Chief Industrial Designer at Fisher and Paykel’s Dunedin design centre two years ago at age 29.

A recent trip took her to Italy where she was joined after the work part by her partner Carl, a fellow food-lover. Together they embarked on a gourmet odyssey, bringing a whole raft of new ideas home with them.

“People imagine that I sit at a CAD station all day, just designing, but the process is much bigger and holistic than that. It’s not only about how a product looks, but how it feels, how it performs and how people interact with it, so we’re always testing — and talking.

The pair share a Dunedin house and Carl commutes weekly from his job in Christchurch. “Lately when he’s been home for the weekend we’ve been practicing our pizza-dough-making skills. It’s a fun way to fill a cold Dunedin winter afternoon and at the same time it’s helpful on the design front. Our kitchen itself is a work in progress, but I’m lucky to have all the latest appliances to play with.”

“We follow people into their homes to see how they cook and what they cook; we even go to the supermarket and watch them shop. In New Zealand these days, it’s especially important to see how different cultures interact with food so that we can produce appliances which suit everyone’s needs!” “It’s all about designing flexibility into the products so customers can use them in different ways.” A typical day at work includes lots of cooking and that’s just fine with Lauren, because she’s an enthusiastic foodie.

Lauren is very passionate about the blog she set up with several colleagues a couple of years ago: www.ourkitchen.fisherpaykel. com. “It’s an awesome project,” she enthuses. “We all loved sharing recipes, so we thought it would be an amazing way to connect with our customers — and that’s turned out to be true!” The blog is beautifully produced and features regular contributions from the founding team — along with offerings from guest cooks.

“We have a fantastic test kitchen and we use it to try out the different appliances and fine tune their functions. There’s always something delicious coming out of the oven, but of course, while it’s fun, this is a vital part of the design process if we want our products to be the very best.”

“One of the guys at work is a keen photographer, and we all enjoy the food styling. In the test kitchen we have shelves full of plates, fabric and bric-a-brac we’ve picked up between us. “We know that the blog is popular because we even get comments and questions from overseas. Someone in America recently, was wondering what golden syrup is!”

When asked how staff keep their waistlines under control, Lauren laughs. “Most of them cycle to work and I guess they do plenty of exercise on the weekends!”

Lauren travels a lot for her job, looking at trends overseas. “The internet is great and we can keep up to date with kitchen design that way, but I also need to get up close to other appliances and actually interact with them.”

SERVES 6

INGREDIENTS 1 cup walnut pieces 2 cups grated parmesan (loosely packed) 1 cup mint leaves, roughly chopped ½ cup flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped

METHOD Preheat oven to 180Âş C on bake. Lay walnuts out on a baking tray and lightly

THE GOOD, THE BAD

A recent report by the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organisation estimates that a third of all produced food is either lost or wasted. It makes for even more dire reading for the United States, where the figure rises to 40%, while in Europe 100 million tonnes of food is thrown out per annum. Overall, 28% of farmland effectively grows food that will be chucked. According to New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment, in 2011 nearly 2.5 million tonnes of solid food waste was deposited in landfills, with us contributing around 60kg each. With around one in seven people on Earth starving, these figures are as shameful as they are shocking. What’s worse, while a chunk of the 40% of fruit and vegetables wasted is due to improper or unavailable means of storage, in the West it’s often simply down to cosmetics. The Soil Association estimates that up to two-fifths of British produce is thrown out because it’s misshapen, yet a United Kingdom study by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers discovered nearly half the population to be unconcerned by how their fruit and veg looked. Intermarché, France’s third largest supermarket chain launched a stylish campaign with the help of trendy advertising agency, Marcel Paris, to promote the plight of the edible rejects. They called it “Inglorious Fruits & Vegetables”. The items were photographed, assigned names such as “grotesque apple” or “disfigured eggplant”, then given their own dedicated aisle and priced 30% cheaper than their pristine counterparts. Soups, smoothies and juices were also on offer to prove taste to be unaffected by unattractiveness. Traffic to the supermarkets increased by a quarter, and all the ‘ugly’ stuff sold out, an average of 1.2 tonnes per store. United Kingdom-based Waitrose, too, has taken to offering “misshapen” and “weather-blemished” stock. It’s just the kind of quirky concept that Kiwis would wholeheartedly embrace. Let’s make sure the supermarkets cotton on to it soon.

ANGUS BEEF FILLET TATAKI | STYLE SALAD WITH STICKY GINGER SOY JAPANESE SAUCE

SERVES 5-7 INGREDIENTS 500g Angus beef fillet 200ml Tataki sauce Fresh salad (cherry tomatoes, radishes, mizuna sprouts, daikon turnips) Tataki sauce: 150ml water 5g dashi powder

METHOD TATAKI SAUCE: Put all ingredients (except ginger juice and corn starch) in the pot and heat together. When boiling, add the dissolved cornstarch. Put the pot in ice water and once cool, add the juice and keep in the fridge.

4tbs soy sauce 2tbs mirin 1tbs rice wine negar

BEEF TATAKI: Cut the beef fillet into a few pieces (about the size of a fat

sausage) and season with grated black pepper and flaky sea salt.

1tsp ginger juice

Heat one tablespoon of canola oil in a frying pan and sear beef

5g corn starch (with 10ml water)

pieces to a nice golden colour on the outside. When seared, place the beef pieces into the freezer for 10 minutes and then place them in the fridge.

CUT AND PLATE THE BEEF TATAKI Thinly slice the beef into 2mm thick pieces and plate with the fresh salad. Using a brush or a spoon, brush the Tataki sauce onto the meat.

If you want to serve tapas-style, roll the beef up with sprouts in the middle and place on a Chinese spoon or small plate.

The black liquid elixir that most of us need to get us going in the morning is in fact a great super food. The beans are scoured from several continents and blended in so many ways to unlock amazing flavour combinations, which keep us going back to our favourite cafes. First cultivated way back in the 6th century in Ethiopia, coffee plants are now cultivated in more than 70 countries, primarily South East Asia, Africa and Latin America.

There are many techniques and variations that coffee producers use to prepare the beans but the process is usually the same: sorting the berries — selecting only the ripest ones (which is best done by hand), drying the beans and then roasting. These variations change the nutritional profile of the beans to each individual ‘roast’. Coffee has a stimulating effect on us due to its caffeine content. In humans, caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant, temporarily wearing off drowsiness and restoring alertness. It is the world’s most popular psychoactive drug, but unlike most, is legal and unregulated. With heavy use, tolerance develops rapidly

to autonomic effects such as elevated heart rate and muscle twitching, but not the cognitive or arousal effects of caffeine. Decaffeination is common, which involves an added process to the production where the berries are soaked in water or solvents, which is then passed though activated charcoal which removes the caffeine. This caffeine is not wasted however, it is sold to soft drink manufactures and is also used for over the counter caffeine pills. Coffee has played its part in history in both politics and religion. The first coffeehouse opened in 1475 in Constantinople by traders coming from Damascus, spreading rapidly in the Ottoman Empire. We now know this area as Turkey. The first appearances of coffee houses in Europe outside of this region were in the 17th century — 1645 in Venice, 1650 in Oxford (this still exists as The Grand Café), and 1689 for Paris, which also still is in operation. AT THE MOVIES WISH I WAS HERE SEPTEMBER 11 Directed by and starring Zach Braff, Wish I Was Here is the story of Aidan Bloom, a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasising about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he’d always dreamed he’d be as a little kid. When his ailing father can no longer afford to pay for private school for his two kids (ages 5 and 12) and the only available public school is on its last legs, Aidan reluctantly agrees to attempt to home-school them. The result is some funny chaos, until Aidan decides to scrap the traditional academic curriculum and come up with his own. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn’t find.

NIGHT MOVES SEPTEMBER 11 When admirable aims lead to disastrous deeds, does the intention or the aftermath win out? Writer/director Kelly Reichardt probes this quandary in Night Moves, an eco-activist parable brimming with the simmering tension of ‘70s psychological dramas, including the Arthur Penn neo-noir that inspired its title. We follow the project’s instigator, ex-dancer and refugee of the Christchurch Earthquake Billie Jordan on her single-minded vision to take the 40 strong group to the world champs — an outrageous plan that has split the island community. STORIES UNTOLD FROM BETWEEN THE LINES OF NEW ZEALAND HISTORY

The lives and legends of New Zealand’s yesteryear are the focal point behind upcoming work Wheel of Experience, penned and performed by musical luminaries David Ward, Dave Khan and Peter Daube, taking place at Q’s Loft from September 9. Integrating music and theatre, Wheel of Experience unfurls tales such as, “the crimes of the Burgess Gang, love and betrayal on the Raurimu Spiral, the murder of Joe Kum Yung, the plight of a hardy band of shipwrecked sealers, confidence trickster Amy Bock’s most infamous transformation and he legend of archetypal ‘westie’ Francesco Rodriguez Figuera, known since as ‘Don Buck’.” Walking a fine line between history, legend, humour and heart, Daube, Ward and Khan bring to life a rich story with each tale — with their journeys traversing from haunting ballads and wailing sea shanties to blistering bluegrass and pounding blues, painting eight tales of struggle, triumph and iniquity from a bygone time. “I loved the way the old-time ballads had such an emphasis on storytelling. People and events that would get larger and more outrageous with each telling.” David Ward reveals the reason for creating the work: “I wanted to do this with some of New Zealand’s characters and events from a time when Europeans were starting to arrive in New Zealand; to paint the hopes and hardships of carving a new life in a strange land at the bottom of the world.” “People really respond to the emotional commitment and immediacy of the music and love engaging with the array of characters that come alive through the songs.”

The choice of instruments that the multi-talented trio perform with has also been a focal point with audiences — as they discovered after their 26 date nationwide tour from earlier this year. “They are invariably fascinated with the range of musical instruments performed — fiddle, mandolin, five string banjos, banjolin, guitars, trombone, cigar box slide guitars and the Chinese zhongruan," says Ward. The work has been universally acclaimed by audience members, theatre reviewers and the music press. Resident muso for Radio New Zealand and New Zealand Listener, Nick Bollinger decreed that, “neither musical nor theatrical experiences come any more astonishing than the Wheel of Experience. Tom Folwell & Michelle Bellamy Two Tales PREVIEW: TUESDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 5.30PM Exhibition: 9 September – 23 September 2014 Presenting Tom Folwell and Michelle Bellamy in a joint exhibition at Parnell Gallery. Each of these highly regarded artists began their careers at a young age; at 15 Tom was the youngest ever accepted into Elam, and at the same age Michelle exhibited for the first time in Nelson. This is an exciting opportunity to see new work from these talented realist painters. Michelle has been painting full-time for over nine years and is based in Nelson. She is most often drawn to the water’s edge for her subject matter and has a fascination for the unique buildings and structures to be found there. “I am always looking to record a small part of New Zealand history, that in the relatively near future may no longer exist.” Of her new work, Seven Moorings at Orakei is a stunning example of Michelle’s particular style. This finely wrought depiction of the area’s muchloved boathouses across rippling water demonstrates her ability to capture the clarity of our antipodean light. Consistent with all of her work, the artist holds her subject matter up in stunning colour and crystal clear detail through precision brushwork and careful layering. Similarly Tom Folwell achieves his extraordinary effects through keen attention to detail. He renders texture, light and shadow with utmost clarity, creating a photographic depth of field and building layers of colour over pencil under-drawings to achieve a serene hyperrealism. Tom lives in Coromandel and finds his subject matter readily amongst the residents, flora and fauna of the peninsula. New work such as A Watchful Eye and Stock Sales, Colville provide an opportunity for the artist to deal with textural features such as the oilskin coat, checked shirt and silver beard of a local character. An endearing tatty-eared sheep is placed close to the picture plane and gazes directly at us from beneath pale eyelashes and a mass of glorious wool in Vincent. The Coromandel’s rural idyll and idiosyncratic colour palette is further invoked in works such as Daybreak Te Kouma, with a timeless view of rusting corrugated iron sheds across the road from the sea. Combining their respective interpretations of our unique heritage and landscape in Two Tales, the new works of these accomplished painters promise a wholly engaging show of impact and quality.

The Rise of the Amateur Snapper Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Last year, in celebration of 125 years in the business, the National Geographic magazine launched a campaign called ‘Your Shot’ whereby readers were requested to submit their travel snaps. The global community project continues with a different theme each month. The title is now also into its 27th yearly photo contest and last time around, over 20,000 people from 130 countries took part. Apple, too, has been holding a similar event for the past eight years with their only stipulation being that all entries must have been captured on one of their iPhones or tablets. “It’s really weird,” award-winning Mexican photojournalist Antonio Olmos tells the Guardian. “Photography has never been so popular, but it’s getting destroyed. There have been so many photographs taken, but photography is dying.” Nothing better demonstrates the omnipotence of these amateur snappers than modern-day music concerts witnessed by audiences holding a sea of tablets and smartphones aloft (NME magazine also runs a competition for fans to submit images of their rock ‘n’ roll icons). With highly portable, relatively high quality cameras constantly in our pockets – and no longer constrained by the cost of image development – we can be as snap-happy as we please. Just as the Infinite Monkey Theorem argues that a monkey will, given an infinite amount of time at a typewriter, likely eventually reproduce the complete works of Shakespeare (or any other text), if the average Joe holds down that camera trigger long enough, chances are at least one of the images will be a goodie. But that’s not to say there aren’t talented amateurs out there also.

“The photographers who used to make make £1,000 for a weekend taking wedding pictures are the ones facing the squeeze,” Olmos goes on. “Increasingly we don’t need photographers – we can do just as well ourselves. Don’t get me wrong. I love iPhones and Instagram. But what I worry about is that Kodak used to employ 40,000 people in good jobs. What have they been replaced by? Twelve people at Instagram.” Indeed, in 2011 the sale of point-and-shoot cameras dropped by nearly a third. The following year, Kodak, who built the world’s first ever digital camera, filed for bankruptcy. They emerged from it in 2012 having sold a slew of their patents to the likes of Facebook (now Instagram’s parent company), Microsoft and Apple. But the future does look bleak for low to medium priced digital cameras. According to the Camera & Imaging Products Association, 2013 saw a 36% drop in sales, while over the same period market researchers IDC found smartphone sales were up by practically the same amount, their sales topping a billion. “And so it is that the smartphone has cannibalised the point-andshoot camera, despite its inferior specs,” writes Ben Taylor for PC World. “Sometimes, it’s better to be convenient, than good.” According to a 2013 whitepaper, Facebook users are uploading an astonishing 350 million photos each day and according to Buzzfeed that’s only 20% of photos taken. The site also estimates that by the year 2000, 86 billion images were shot annually. By 2012, we’d capturing a jaw-dropping 3.8 trillion (it’s unclear how many of those were Kim Kardashian selfies). This year, so says Australia’s The Age, the world’s 1.5 billion smartphones will snap one trillion stills. Antonio Olmos, like a true romantic, remains defiant. “I’ll survive the profession because I have skills,” he says. “I’m a storyteller in images. My compositions are better than most people’s. Just because you’ve got a microprocessor in your computer doesn’t make you a writer. And just because you’ve got an Instagram app on your phone you aren’t a great photographer.” So there.

Few firms, if any, boast the aural expertise of The Audio Consultant, with over a quarter of a century’s worth of experience and a passion and wisdom to match. The company was founded in Hamilton by Jeff Clark, who soon established himself as North Island’s go-to guy for all things hi-fi and automation. A prestigious store has now opened in Grey Lynn, a few minutes stroll from Ponsonby Road. “Nearly half of our customers come from Auckland anyway, so it just made sense,” says the new store boss John Moher, whose appointment seemed almost fated. “After 28 years in the corporate world, I wanted a change of lifestyle. I wanted to do something that I was truly passionate about, and music is my first love. The day I rang Jeff was the same day he’d decided to open up this shop.” The Audio Consultant is an audiophile’s dream, stocking everything from $300 headphones to systems worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s those premium products and the staff’s in-depth knowledge of them that really sets these guys apart. “The whole business is about engagement,” John continues. “You can just stroll in off the street and take a look round, there’s no pressure. We’re totally committed to doing right by the customer. It’s not about pushing expensive equipment on customers just to make a fast buck.” It’s important, he says, to nurture customer relationships: “if someone is really passionate about their music and just starting out, we can provide them with a really nice entry system. Then, when they’re ready, or when funds allow, we can take them to that next level. They can trust that we have their best interests at heart.” Then there is the other end of the market, where money isn’t the limiting factor; “recently we’ve been kitting out the super yacht

of one of New Zealand’s wealthiest men,” he says. “We’re also carrying out home automation at three of his properties too. It’s a relationship that has been built on trust over time. There has been a lot of planning.” These solutions include speakers by legendary French speaker maker, Focal, widely acknowledged to be the world’s finest speaker manufacturer and an absolute Audio Consultant favourite. Not to think this is some sort of high tech man-cave, that is not what we are about. Anyone can come in and ask questions, no one will be judged. We’re genuine and passionate and straight-up and we genuinely believe we will provide the best solution for any customer’s needs.”

Although the term 'magazine' hadn’t yet been coined, this literary and philosophical publication was effectively the very first one. As Verve continues to celebrate its tenth year, we take a look at some other magazine milestones, from A through to Z…

AIRBRUSHING The manual airbrush was invented in the late 19th century and photography manipulation has been occurring for nearly as long (a tampered with 150-year-old image saw the head of Abraham Lincoln fixed to the body of another politician, John Calhoun). But with the modern media, the art of airbrushing has just gotten sillier. No longer enough to simply remove blemishes or untimely zits, waists are also shrunk, breasts enlarged and lips even given digital doses of collagen. Kate Winslet famously went public with her disgust of her treatment on a GQ magazine cover which saw some ridiculously overzealous stretching of her legs.“I don’t look like that and, more importantly, I do not desire to look like that,” she fumed. Right on, Kate. BEVERLY JOHNSON In 1974 a 21-year-old Beverly Johnson became the first black woman to appear on the cover of Vogue and a year later, the first black cover girl of French Elle. When Johnson began modelling in her late teens, she was told she would never make it. Some hairdressers refused to do her hair and camera giants Kodak didn’t even make film that would work well with her skin colour. Johnson later became a successful businesswoman and was named by the New York Times as one of the 20th century’s most influential people in fashion. CONDÉ MONTROSE NAST One of the most significant names in the history of magazine publishing, Condé Montrose Nast founded his eponymous company in 1909. Vogue was immediately bought and he later became responsible for the likes of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker. Today, along with the above, the firm’s spectacular portfolio boasts a diverse range of publications such as GQ, Architectural Digest, Glamour, Condé Nast Traveller, Golf World and Wired.

DC COMICS New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine #1 was released in 1935 by newly-founded National Allied Publications. The series became a surprise hit and three years down the line the company created Action Comics featuring a certain Superman. The idea of an all-conquering flying gent in a cape was considered a ridiculous notion by some in the editorial office, until they saw the sales figures. Then came Bob Kane’s Batman, released under the firm’s new name, DC Comics. The rest, as they say, is history. EDWARD CAVE Eighteenth century English printer and publisher Edward Cave was the first person to use the word ‘magazine’ in publishing, derived from the military usage of the term to describe a storehouse of varied goods. Cave founded the Gentleman’s Magazine in 1731. A gathering of essays and articles collected from other publications, it ran until 1914. Cave had edited the periodical under the pseudonym Sylvanus Urban. FORT PECK DAM Legendary Life magazine was established in 1883. Known for its iconic covers, it has featured the likes of Winston Churchill, the first moon landing and Vietnam War battle scenes. For its first 50 years, Life’s editors relied on illustrators for the covers, but in 1936 the very first photographic one was released. Taken by Margaret BourkeWhite, it was an image of the Fort Peck Dam, the largest of the Missouri River, and was later also used in the ‘Celebrate the Century’ United States postage stamp series.

GONZO JOURNALISM A form of satirical writing whereby the rules — and truth — are stretched to breaking point and the journalist becomes the story’s star. The term ‘gonzo’ was first used in 1970 to describe a piece concerning America’s Kentucky Derby, written by Hunter S. Thompson, and published in Scanlan’s Monthly. Thompson would go on to perfect his new-found voice as a regular contributor for the likes of Rolling Stone and with a host of essays, books and novels including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream. HEARST CORPORATION A publishing monolith, the Hearst Corporation was founded by William Randolph Hearst in March of 1887, with just one newspaper, the San Francisco Examiner on its books. It now owns 15 dailies and 34 weekly papers, along with 29 television stations and hundreds of magazines around the world, publishing titles such as Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan and Elle. Orson Welles’ 1941 movie Citizen Kane, regarded as one of the finest films ever made, was loosely based on the life of the publishing magnate. INTERNET THREAT? British magazines Nuts and Bliss closed their doors this year and other major titles to have shut up shop include Australia’s FHM. The rise of the internet is at least partly to blame, though Hearst Magazine publisher boss David Carey feels that the very nature of the magazine should protect the industry due to publications’ longer shelf-life and less reliance on classified ads than, say, newspapers (who have felt the pinch even more). If anything, high-end advertisers prefer them. According to research firm MediaFinder, north American magazine launches outpaced closures for the first half of 2014 by nearly three times.

JET MAGAZINE Founded in 1951, Jet, a United States lifestyle magazine aimed at African-Americans, swapped its print for digital presence earlier this year. John H. Johnsons, the magazine’s original publisher, became the first black man to appear on the Forbes 400 List. United States comedian and actor Red Foxx once praised the publication as “the Negro bible.” It received acclaim for its coverage of the racially-aggravated murder of teenager Emmett Till in 1955, and later for its promotion of civil rights. KIM AND KANYE GO VOGUE Oh how fashionistas snorted at the sight of Kim and Kanye West adorning the April 2014 cover of Vogue, but the fameloving pair had the last laugh when the issue became the biggest selling in history, with half a million units shifted. That puts Beyonce’s 350,000 and Michelle Obama’s 300,000 sales into perspective. Former vampire-slayer Sarah Michelle Geller was so disgusted by the rapper’s and the reality star’s cover coup that she cancelled her subscription. That sure showed ‘em, Buffy. LADIES MERCURY Although the term ‘magazine’ hadn’t yet been coined, the Ladies Mercury was basically the first one to be aimed solely at women. Published by London author John Dunton in February of 1693, it dealt mainly with issues of love and relationships. Readers were also asked to submit their queries, giving birth to the modern-day agony page. Alas, the periodical lasted barely a month, proving that the publishing world was just as cutthroat over three centuries ago.


MARILYN MONROE The first issue of Playboy was released in December, infamously featuring Marilyn Monroe as its centrefold and cover star (the images were actually originally taken for a calendar, not the magazine). The copy was produced in Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s kitchen, and he was so unsure of its success that he left the magazine undated. He needn’t have worried. The issue sold out in weeks, and two icons were born.

Q MAGAZINE GOES GAGA British rock ‘n’ roll bible Q was banned from certain United States chain stores in 2010, due to its cover featuring a seminaked Lady Gaga and the displaying of part of her lower left boob. In New York State, it is forbidden to show any of the breast area below the nipple, though there is, apparently, no law against the fact that she also had a phallic-shaped (and possibly vibrating) object stuffed down the front of her trousers.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC One of the world’s oldest and most widely read publications, National Geographic, was founded after its eponymous society, a group dedicated to the conservation of and education about our Earth. As famous for the quality of its photojournalism as it is for the written word, the multiaward-winning magazine is read by over 8 million people in 36 languages. Last year it celebrated its 125th birthday.

RUNNER’S WORLD Runner’s World was founded in 1966 by long distance runner, photographer and producer, Bob Anderson aged only 17, and with just a hundred bucks to his name. It’s now the world’s biggest selling running publication with 14 international editions. In 2012, in celebration of 50 years of racing, Anderson decided to compete in 50 races and his journey was captured in the film A Long Run.

OK!... NOT SO MUCH British celebrity bible OK! caused uproar in 2009 by running an official tribute issue for terminal cancer-stricken reality TV star, Jade Goody. The front page read “In Loving Memory”, along with the years of her birth, and death. The only problem was, she was still very much alive at the time of going to press. The following June, decency was stretched once more with an image of Michael Jackson wearing an oxygen mask at the apparent time of his passing.

SCOTS MAGAZINE Probably the world’s oldest continuous publication, The Scots Magazine is a monthly glossy focussed on the places, people and culture of Scotland. It was established on 9 February, 1739, published as a 48-page pamphlet in Edinburgh and priced at a sixpence. It has since relocated to Glasgow and boasts an average monthly readership of 200,000. It is also the world’s best-selling publication of its kind.

PULP FICTION A dominant form of entertainment in early 20th century America, ‘pulp’ magazines were printed on cheap forms of wood pulp paper, a stark contrast to the glossiness of contemporaries such as the New Yorker. Their fantastical fictional content concerned matters of exploration, adventure and warfare. Comparable to today’s beach paperback reads, pulp fiction offered a start to writers such as science-fiction legend Issac Asimov and L. Ron Hubbard of Scientology fame.

TIME Launched by Henry Luce in 1923, Time is one of the world’s most widely read news magazines, with offices in New York, London, Sydney and Hong Kong. It’s now famed for its ‘All Time 100’ compilation lists concerning the greatest movies, novels and fashion icons. Its annual ‘Person of the Year’ title has been won by figures such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jnr., JFK, and, controversially, Stalin and Hitler too.

UP IN THE AIR There are over 150 inflight magazine titles around the world, the first was released by Pan American World Airways. Dutch carrier KLM boasts the oldest continuous publication, having been first released in 1966. According to consumer research firm Nielson Audio (formerly Arbitron), 80% of passengers read the magazines for an average of half-an-hour. In 2012, CNN voted Air New Zealand’s Kia Ora the third best inflight read on, well, above really, Earth. V-J DAY SMOOCH The father of modern-day photojournalism, Alfred Eisenstaedt, was a staff photographer at Life. His stunning imagery graced over 90 covers of the magazine, his most well-known being that Times Square kiss during V-J celebrations, with an American sailor embracing a nurse bent backwards in his arms. WATCHTOWER The world’s most widely-circulated magazine is one you’ve probably never heard of. The Watchtower is a Brooklynbased monthly publication distributed by hand, by Jehovah Witnesses. A staggering 40 million copies are produced every month, in over 180 languages, delivered to 236 countries. X-RATED The roots of pornography can be traced to Renaissance Rome with the creation of 16 explicit engravings by artist Marcantonio Raimondi, for which he was imprisoned. Erotic writings followed throughout Europe over the coming centuries, but it wasn’t until major advancements in printing technology that pornography was created in magazine form in the late 19th century. Early incarnations include the English Photo Bits, with burlesque models set to erotic stories, and French magazine, Le Frission, one of the first to display the female nude.

YOUNGEST EDITOR, SECOND OLDEST MAG In 1967, Willie Morris became the youngest-ever editor of America’s second oldest magazine, Harper’s (not to be confused with Harper’s Bazaar). While at the helm, Morris helped instigate the careers of scribes William Styron and Norman Mailer. The magazine had been established in 1850 by New York-based publishers Harper & Brothers, and within six months circulation, exploded to 50,000. Other past contributors include Jack London, Henry James and Mark Twain. ZINES A self-published gift to the literary world, a zine is often a cult publication, a ‘homemade’ magazine reproduced on a photocopier, the result of a labour of love. Three years ago a Charlotte Bronte zine, written when she was just 14, fetched $1.5 million at auction and in 2012 the Herald wrote of New Zealand’s thriving zine scene, with one about the Prime Minister trying to make it as a hip-hop star called John ‘Keywi’ Key.

Green tea, sugar and a microbe mix may sound like the basic ingredients of a health drink or an intriguing new flavoured craft beer, but for United Kingdom designer Suzanne Lee, it’s the basis for the creation of a whole new fashion sector. Her idea is, quite literally, to grow clothes. “The garments we create are made using fermentation,” Lee tells TED. “I’m essentially proposing moving to a model that’s closer to brewing or the food industry than to a textile factory.” The sartorial sorcery sees sugar dissolved in a brew which is then left to cool in a vat where living organisms and acetic acid is added. Over time, the liquid forms into layers. Up top there forms a web of nano-fibres of pure cellulose. “It’s a static culture,” adds Lee. “You don’t have to do anything. You can simply watch it grow.” When fully fermented the material is taken out, compressed and dried. The result is anything from a light transparent paper through to flexible vegetable leather which, says Lee, can be cut and sewn conventionally or used as a wet material to form round a 3D shape. “As it evaporates, it will knot itself together to form seams. Once the process is going, the old fermented liquid can even be recycled.” Lee tells TED that even the colouring can be carried out through organic means: dyed using iron oxidation or vegetable staining. In fact, while cotton would usually take up to 18 dips to attain a deep indigo hue, her cellulose designs need just one: “And a really short one at that!” One of the next goals is to create an organic fabric that is water resistant. Lee has founded BioCouture with the mission of taking her bio-based fashion mainstream. “What really excites me about using microbes is their efficiency,” says the designer. “If we only grow what we need, there is no waste. We can even make things from waste streams, such as a sugar waste stream from a processing plant. Finally, at the end of use, we can biodegrade naturally along with our vegetable peelings.” Bacteria cellulose is already used for wound healing and is being developed to repair bone tissue too. Lee stresses that she is not suggesting it become a replacement for current textiles, rather a “smart, sustainable addition to our increasingly precious resources.” Ultimately, concludes Lee, they could recreate such things as lamps, chairs, cars and even whole houses. “So my question to you is, in the future, what would you choose to grow?”

DISCOVER LOCAL FASHION As I write this month’s column we’ve just wrapped up another Fashion Week. This year I attended quite a few shows, but I do admit that I like being able to pick and choose; a few years ago I used to review them for the Fashionz website and that meant a full schedule. One of the things that NZFW cops flak for is the very ‘wearable’ nature of the designers’ collections. This can mean that it is all a bit dull and pedestrian. In New Zealand, we don’t run to the truly avant-garde, instead, our designers focus on wearable, and therefore saleable garments. I believe there’s two key factors at play here — the major one is our economy. The past few years has seen our fashion industry take an enormous hit in the face of online sales, a shrinking pool of people who are prepared to spend what little discretionary income they have on clothing, and a re-alignment of the way we spend (waiting for a sale anyone?). This has seen large numbers of independent boutiques and designers hold on for as long as they could, but finally succumb to low sales volumes, falling profits and rising costs.

Another key factor is our smaller population. We simply do not have the numbers of outliers that other countries have. Yes, we have our fashion darlings who consistently push the boundaries and create special pieces that will appeal to a more creative comsumer, but the buyers of these garments are a little thin on the ground. To truly survive in what has become a fairly cut-throat industry, it means focussing on producing garments that people will actually buy, and that means middle-of-the-road appeal. So, is this a bad thing? Perhaps. What it does mean is that you can easily buy and happily wear a piece direct from the runway — something that is unachievable in many other countries. It means that our fashion week is a more accessible one, and that is actually quite cool. On the other hand, it means that we might be stifling true creativity in economic reality, and that’s a bit of a shame. What to do? Support our local designers as much as possible. Buy less cheap, mass produced ‘tat’ and instead make an investment in a garment lovingly crafted locally. When we commit to doing this, our fashion industry will again begin to bloom.

Donatella Versace Born in Reggio Calabria in 1955, Donatella Versace was the youngest of four children. Her mother was a dress-maker and her elder brother, Gianni became a fashion designer, eventually going on to found the house of Versace in Milan in 1978. Gianni and Donatella were extremely close. He made outfits for her to wear at night and she became his muse and most important critic. In that time she developed her trademark appearance — dyeing her hair platinum blonde and wearing huge amounts of eyeliner. Always the social one of the Versace clan, Donatella had close friendships with numerous high profile celebrities, including Madonna and Liz Hurley — connections which added a sense of rock-prestige to the burgeoning brand. In the mid 1990s, Gianni battled cancer and Donatella effectively took over the reigns of the company during that period. Gianni survived cancer, only to be murdered outside his Miami home in 1997. In the wake of this disaster, the family sequestered themselves away in the Caribbean for a period of time before returning to face the music. Donatella had been the Vice-President of Versace prior to Gianni’s death. After that, she also took over as the Creative Director and her elder brother Santo became the CEO. Her daughter, Allegra, had been the apple of her late uncle’s eye and was bequested 50% of the company in his will.

Under Donatella’s stewardship, the Versace brand has gone from strength to strength. She has often favoured bright, vibrant colours and bold designs. A dress she designed for Jennifer Lopez to wear to the Grammy Awards in 2000 caused almost as much of a stir as 'That Dress' designed by her brother for Liz Hurley in 1994. It was a stunning jungle-green and effectively see-through silk chiffon number. It left little to the imagination, with a neck-line which plunged below J.Lo’s navel and took the sari-inspired style of dress to new heights. Donatella extended the scope of Versace’s designs into accessories, home furnishings and even hotels — there is a Palazzo Versace hotel gracing both the Gold Coast and the Dubai foreshore. As a younger woman, Versace had a sort of comely, natural beauty about her. Though it must be said that the passage of time, a serious smoking habit and an over-reliance on cosmetic surgery have not been kind to her looks. Nonetheless, she has established herself as one of the most influential names in fashion and created a brand her dear brother would undoubtedly have been proud of.

Given this month’s focus on beauty and fashion, I decided to chat to Laura Myers, founder and owner of Atea Oceanie womenswear and one of my oldest and dearest friends. Journalistic impartiality will obviously be impossible. Still, I trust you will enjoy a brief story of success and find inspiration from a young New Zealander, living life to the full with a rapidly growing brand of her own making. Laura is a truly cosmopolitan woman. After finishing school in Auckland, she attended Brown University in Rhode Island. She divided her time between the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Pacific Islands, particularly Tahiti. She now lives in London. Always possessing an innate sense of style, Laura decided that she wanted to start her own business. “It was to do a lifestyle brand inspired by the South Pacific” — selling gorgeous black pearls, tapa cloth and shell necklaces amongst other treasures. ‘Atea’, according to the mythology of the Marquesas Islanders, was the giver of light. In 2011 she opened a store in Kensington, but the location and the concept didn’t work. Atea Version 1 was an example of trying to do too much at once. As Geoff Vuleta (formerly of New York agency Fahrenheit 212) had said to her, “you can have a great idea, but is the idea on the money?” She went back to the drawing board and decided this time she would focus only on women’s clothing, keep it simple and do it right.

Unlike its predecessor, Atea Version 2 has been a resounding success. In fact, Laura’s over the moon as we chat on Skype, Thursday night London-time. It seems that Atea clothing will soon be found amongst the shelves in Selfridges. “We got an order in the last couple of weeks, so we’ll deliver that collection in November and that’s a real game changer because it’s our first stockist in London.” Atea has clothing for all seasons and all climates and currently supplies stores in Japan and New York, and is soon to launch in Zurich and Australia. Getting into Selfridges is a big deal and Laura’s justifiably chuffed. The word ‘classic’ is over-used in fashion circles. Rather, I would say that Atea’s designs are simple, elegant and smart. Laura and her designer, Semi Lee, regularly sit down together and try to get a clear picture of what the brand is trying to say and what the typical ‘Atea woman’ feels like and wants. I’m told that this woman is confident, relaxed and nonchalant. She wants to dress well, but also doesn’t want to have to try too hard or spend too much time fussing over her wardrobe. “She’s you!” I suggest. Laura laughs. “Well, I aspire to be like her.”

Tried & Tested: Dermalogica’s New BioSurface Peel Words: Jenna Moore

Dermalogica’s latest innovation, the BioSurface Peel, is designed to address pesky skin conditions such as dryness, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, razor bumps and acneic inflammation. The word ‘peel’ is a bit of misnomer and refers to a deep exfoliating action designed to get rid of dull, dying skin cells on the outer layer of skin, leaving the way clear for the more luminous, newer cells to come through. We popped along to Bare Waxing in Grey Lynn to experience the treatment with Sifa. Sifa started by double cleansing the face to ensure a thorough cleanse. This is a standard Dermalogica procedure. She then used the four steps of the BioSurface Peel system. Step 1 The Prep Solution. This contains salicylic acid, which causes weakening of cell connections, allowing for sloughing of skin cells. Combined with a low pH, keratin bonds are loosened, speeding up the skin’s natural desquamation process (shedding off of old and dead skin cells). Step 2 The Enzyme Active phase uses a solution containing pumpkin fruit enzymes with papain, which tingles a little. To help couteract this, Sifa waved a small, soothing fan as it was processed. Step 3 Salicylic acid comes into play again in the Acid Active phase, which also delivers lactic acid, bran-derived phytic acid and sugar cane extract. The same protocol with the fan is used. This step brightens areas of hyper-pigmentation, helps increase cell turnover and aids the removal of plugged follicles. Step 4 Called the Decelerator Step, a soothing solution of sodium bicarbonate, yeast extract, soothing cucumber fruit, Japanese

green tea, oat leaf and saponaria leaf extracts stops the exfoliation process and slows the acid activity, calming the skin and returning it to its natural pH. Post-treatment our skin looked a little red, and also incredibly hydrated, smooth and glowing. One of the advantages of this peel is that there is no downtime and little to no post-peel redness. Most people do experience a little peeling, which exfoliation will remove. The treatment includes an after care kit, comprising a mini UltraCalming Cleanser, Barrier Repair, Intensive Moisture Balance, Super Sensitive shield SPF30 and MultiVitamin Thermafoliant. Rarotonga and its lack of surfing provided the incongruous inspiration for some of Tanya Carlson’s latest range, she tells me as we shoot the breeze in a studio above her Ponsonby store. “The reef means you can’t really surf, so I spent much of the time swimming and relaxing,” chuckles the designer. ”My partner and one of our closest friends, Fiona Pardington, were both having tattoos done up there — amazing pieces done in the traditional manner. We spent a lot of time walking the beaches, picking up shells and coral for Fiona to photograph. Those textures are reflected in the designs — there’s certainly a relaxed aesthetic. The vision of the locals attending church in their Sunday whites had an effect too.” It’s quite the contrasting imagery to her Dunedin roots, a place Carlson describes as, “very dark, brooding and academic,” with a “gothic music scene.” While still in her teens, she moved to Australia to study fine arts and later fashion, before returning home. “A friend of mine from design school summed it up perfectly,” she says. “He said that New Zealand is like the small, nerdy intellectual brother and Australia is the big, sporty blond one always teasing us. When I came back, I saw Jane Campion’s The Piano and I understood then, the darkness that New Zealand has that Australia absolutely does not.” I ask Carlson about her childhood fashion design dreams. “I’ve always known what I wanted to be. That has been the effortless part. I knew people who could sew things, but I didn’t know any fashion designers personally, especially at the bottom of the South Island. There was nothing like Project Runway. But I was so focussed, even from a young age. I just had this idea that I wanted to make clothes. You can count yourself as one of the lucky ones if you’ve always known what you want to do and you still like doing it.” Carlson founded her label in 1997 and ten years later relocated to Auckland. “When I first started, the women I employed on the machines were hugely influential,” she says. “They taught me about restraint. They taught me how to craft things beautifully.” Renowned print-maker Marilyn Webb was, adds Carlson, instrumental too. It was Webb, an early art teacher of the designer, who urged a young Carlson to study overseas. Carlson went some way to repaying that by being actively

Along with the fashion show, it offers up-and-coming designers the chance to showcase their wares as part of the iD Dunedin International Emerging Designer Awards. “The show takes place at the railway station and it has morphed into this huge event,” says Carlson. “We’ve had students from all over the world enter their final collections for the Emerging Designer Awards and there have been guests of the highest calibre, such as [United Kingdom fashion writer] Hillary Alexander, [world-renowned milliner] Stephen Jones and [fashion designer] Zandra Rhodes. It’s an incredible experience for the students because they have the opportunity to present in front of people they may never otherwise get the chance to meet.” The future’s bright, she believes, for Kiwi fashion, with many strong designers breaking through. Carlson states it’s essential that the next generation of designers find their own sense of style and stick with it. It’s harder than you think, she says, to not be influenced by those whom you admire. “My idea of things hasn’t changed greatly,” she adds. “I can pull pieces out from 15 years ago and still remake them.” A recent exhibition at Dunedin Public Art Gallery is proof of the timelessness of her designs. Entitled “Not All White: Wedding Dresses by Tanya Carlson”, it showcases a collection of 17 one-off bridal gowns in celebration of 15 years of iD Fashion. “It’s quite true of any strong label that it doesn’t change dramatically,” she continues. “Though you do embrace current trends, there are certain elements that remain. You could look at my work and say there are 1930s and 70s elements to it. I grew up reading Victorian children’s books, so I’ve always had a love for that period and style and I enjoy men’s tailoring too. It’s all a big melting pot.”


Being There: Memoirs of a Fashion and Beauty Writer 1956 – 2006 Words: Doris de Pont

This book is an insider's view of the world of fashion and is the NZ Fashion Museum's first e-publication. Due to be released on 11th September 2014 it is a thoroughly engaging tale told by veteran fashion writer Cecilie Geary. Beginning with her experiences in the 1950s in the advertising department of the D.S.A, one of Dunedin's major department stores it follows her on her O.E, working as a copywriter at Selfridges in swinging 1960s London. Back in Auckland in the late 60s she finds work with an advertising agency that makes TV ads with the likes of pop stars Dinah Lee and the Chicks and in 1969 Cecilie begins her long association with model agency owner and fashion entrepreneur Maysie Bestall-Cohen. Her role as scriptwriter for Maysie's fashion shows, her Auckland Star column “Fashion with Maysie Bestall-Cohen” and the Benson & Hedges Awards shows made Cecilie a fashion insider, meeting and observing the who's who of the local fashion scene, from stalwarts of the industry like Gus Fisher, to the superstars of the 1980s like Patrick Steel and introducing a 17 year old Kate Sylvester just starting her fashion design course at Wellington Polytechnic. Putting her connections and knowledge to good use Cecilie did some freelance fashion writing for More magazine and in 1985 began a writing relationship with Fashion Quarterly that went on to span 15 years. Her love of fashion and its people, an extensive archive of superb images and stories, make Cecilie Geary's memories in Being There a fascinating, nostalgic and informative read. This book, which includes 72 photographs, promises to charm and enlighten anyone with a fashionable eye. Start right away by making lists and store them in a place where you will regularly look at them for ease of adding and editing. Pack one or two colours as your base or layering garments. Black is the preference because most of us have black shoes and accessories. This means you only have to take one black handbag and two accessory looks; a long black necklace for current casual looks and a short option with a bit of shine or sparkle for special occasions. You will need a dressy and a casual shoe that coordinates with black basics, one pair of jeans and one winter weight coat if required. Pack lightweight pieces such as a layering top and a cardigan - they keep you warm and minimize the need to take heavier items. Your cardigans and light outerwear is where you can add a bit of colour. Pack blouses, tops and tunics in fabrics that do not crease. High quality polyester is lightweight and easy care - the last thing you want to be doing on your holiday is ironing! Lastly don’t forget your lightweight rainproof jacket. Bon Voyage!

COUNT YOUR STEPS, NOT CALORIES 10,000 STEPS A DAY IS THE GOAL! WE’VE ALL HEARD THIS A THOUSAND TIMES . . . BUT WHY? In 2004 the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) looked at 60,000 workers in 55 countries who aimed to walk 10,000 steps every day for eight months. At the end of the challenge, 67% of participants reported an increase in fitness and energy levels and participants lost an average of 5kg each — just from walking!

“After four months, the number of GCC participants with high blood pressure had reduced by 34% while waist size was reduced by an average of 5cm”. The ones that kept walking 10,000 steps a day, for a further one year were able to maintain blood pressure, keep the weight off and decrease their BMI. They also reduced significant risk factors for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. A few reasons to aim for 10,000 steps at least five days a week: 1. It strengthens you heart: regular walking has been shown to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. It lowers levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol while increasing levels of HDL (good)

Boost vitamin D level: walking outside in daylight boosts your body’s stores of vitamin D — a nutrient hard to get from food, but that our bodies synthesise from exposure to sunlight. 3. It gives you energy: it might seem like a paradox (and the last thing you might feel like) but a brisk walk is one of the best natural energisers around. 4. Tones your legs, bum and tum: regular and good walking can help strengthen and shape your legs, calves, quads, hamstrings and lift your glutes (buttock muscles) — especially if you add hills. Sounds pretty good to me! So, my September challenge to you is to try adding 2,000 steps a day to your total until you reach 10,000 a day and see how you feel.

I have recently moved back to Auckland in an endeavour to be an integral part of the growth of the New Zealand fitness industry and helping people better understand how to control their health and well being. I am currently a personal trainer at City Fitness Newmarket, a sponsored athlete, a competitive fitness and figure model and business owner, specialising in writing weight loss nutrition plans. 15 minute home workout 30 seconds of jumping lunges 10 situps 10 squat jumps 10 lying straight leg raises 10 pushups 1 minute plank repeat x 5 Recipe of the month: Vanilla Protein Pancakes Ingredients: 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein (I recommend ‘skinny protein’ from Green Tea X50 for its numerous fat burning qualities coupled with its incredible taste!) 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 4 egg whites 1/3 cup coconut and almond milk 30g coconut flour Directions: Blend all of your ingredients together in a blender until a batter is formed and then cook over a medium heat using coconut oil. Serve hot and enjoy! Mark KnoffThomas: Newmarket’s Newest CEO Words Jamie Christian Desplaces

He’s only been in the job a month, but it’s already abundantly clear that the future is bright for the Newmarket Business Association with Mark Knoff-Thomas at the helm. “I think Newmarket’s like a decentralised Harrods,” says the amiable new CEO. “You can buy everything from a Lamborghini to a ten dollar hoodie at the Warehouse. You can grab a pair of designer shoes, or a pair of jandals. Get your Will done, your eyes fixed and your accounts sorted! That’s so important, and it’s probably unique to New Zealand.” Mark has lived in and around Newmarket “over the past twenty-odd years.” He talks proudly of the area’s renowned reputation as one of the nation’s top fashion and shopping spots, as well as the well-established commercial sector. He believes it’s important to capitalise on that reputation to further develop the suburb’s hospitality hub. While there are, he says, already incredible bars and eateries in Newmarket, he wants to see more, especially as the new boss is somewhat of foodie. “One of the best things in life is having a group of friends around a table enjoying good food and wine,” he says. “That’s heaven for me. That’s what life is all about.” How’s your cooking? “I love it, I find it really therapeutic. Some of my dishes turn out pretty amazingly, some things, not so! I’m pretty proud of my salmon dishes, but I draw the line at baking.” Bill Clinton, Anthony Hopkins, Winston Churchill, Meryl Streep and David Lange would be, says Mark, his dream dinner guest list. His culinary skills aside, Mark, always a creative soul, once harboured dreams of becoming a carpenter (“of the woodwork, not singing, kind!”). He has experience in media, teaching, HR, business consultancy and recruitment. He has been a radio talk show host, still has his own business and is also a marriage celebrant to boot. It’s an eclectic mix that will serve him — and the businesses of Newmarket — well in his latest role. “My recruitment experience

undertaking many walkabouts, putting shopkeeper names to their shop faces. “It’s important that I’m visible,” says Mark. “I need to understand what’s going on in the area, what’s trending, what’s working and what’s not. As a business association, we must represent the interests of all of our members.” Newmarket, he continues, has got good bones, good people: “I think the area’s strength is its people. They’re amazing, there’s such a strong sense of community spirit, such a strong culture. “The higher we soar,” mused philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, “the smaller we appear to those who cannot fly.” Since man has possessed the ability to dream, he has dreamt of the ability to take the skies. Ancient Greek mythology offers one of the most tragic dreamers of all, Icarus, who flew too close to the sun only to melt his wings of wax and tumble to his death — a symbolic warning to latter day aeronautical engineers. Fourth century BC philosopher Archytas reportedly flew 200 metres in a flying device named 'The Pigeon'. Eleventh century English monk Eilmer of Malmesbury flew — or more likely fell — around the same distance after flinging himself from a hilltop abbey with wings attached to his arms and legs. For Leonardo da Vinci, flying was an obsession, his sketched bat-like machines as famous as his frescos.

In November of 1783, Frenchmen Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d’Arlandes became the first men to officially fly, taking to the skies in a hot air balloon. Pilâtre was to pass away soon after, when he crashed while attempting to span the Channel between Britain and France. Brothers Orveill and Wilbur Wright have long been credited as the first to pilot a powered plane — which they had also invented and built — in late 1903. That claim had long been disputed by supporters of Kiwi Richard Pearse, a farmer and inventor from Canterbury who some believe first flew his contraption many months prior. “From the time I was quite a little chap, I had a great fancy for engineering,” Pearse told the Timaru Post. “When I was still quite a young man, I conceived the idea of inventing a flying machine.” In 1902, aged 25, Pearse mounted a bamboo and linen wing structure to a tricycle frame powered by a twocylinder engine capable of delivering 25 horsepower. There are witness reports from that year and the next, of Pearse managing to take-off for short distances at low heights, usually followed by minor crashes. But Pearse sets the record straight in the newspaper article. “I did not attempt anything practical with the idea until, in 1904, when the St Louis Exposition authorities offered a prize of 20,000 to the man who invented and flew a flying machine over a specified course,” he says. “I did not, as you know, succeed in winning the prize, neither did anyone else.” What he did realise, Pearce goes on, was that his invention had potential, and that he was now only weeks away from success. This interview took place in 1909.

So it’s back to the Wright brothers then. Or is it? According to the 100th anniversary issue of renowned aviation journal Jane’s All The World’s Aircraft, German Gustav Whitehead (formerly Weisskopf) soared the skies before the Wrights in his plane, the Condor. The journal states on Whitehead’s flight that, it must be stressed, was more than two years before the Wrights manhandled their Flyer from its shed and flew a couple of hundred feet in a straight line. Thanks to the meticulous researches of [aviation expert] John Brown… an injustice is rectified with only slight bruising to Wilbur and Orville’s reputation. The Wrights were right; but Whitehead was ahead.” Pearse, however, gives it to the brothers. The BBC quotes him in another newspaper article, this time from 1915, as saying: “Pre-eminence will undoubtedly be given to the Wright brothers of America when the history of the aeroplane is written, as they were the first to actually make successful flights with a motor-driven aeroplane.” Pearse and his supporters can take pride from, and comfort in, the knowledge that his monoplane with a steerable nose-wheel is a design far closer to modern-day aircraft than the Wrights’ biplane. Also, that he inspired generations of New Zealanders to set their dreams high, and that he still does. By 1919, there were almost 300 trained pilots and the following year saw the first flight across the Cook Straight. In 1928 — a year after Charles Lindbergh became the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic — up to 40,000 Aucklanders cheered the landing of Southern Cross, a three-engine Fokker flown by an Australian-lead crew, which arrived from California via Queensland. The 1930s belonged to Jean Batten and her slew of solo record breaking flights such as the 1939 New Zealand to England sprint. Two years prior, Tasman Empire Airways Ltd, or TEAL, was created, later to become Air New Zealand. And so the wheels — and wings — of progress continue still. July saw Air New Zealand’s very first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner touch down at Auckland airport. The most elegant of machines, kitted out in all black, was greeted by over 50 of the carrier’s staff performing the haka. “Being on the flight deck on the delivery of this magnificent 787-9 aircraft to Air New Zealand has been a career highlight,” says Captain David Morgan. “Like the Boeing 747-400 in the 1980s this aircraft is a game changer for the airline and our customers.” And so it is with a certain sadness that the newest addition to the Air New Zealand family ushers out that iconic 747 'jumbo-jet', also known as 'the Queen of the Skies'. No longer considered economical enough, this month the carrier’s last one will make her last round trip to San Francisco. "It’s been the backbone of the fleet and deserves its name 'the Queen of the Skies’,” Captain Ron Woodward told the Herald. "It’s still a very pretty aircraft and certainly one of the most distinctive.” Former training captain Jack Priest also said that the planes "made the airline a lot of money and rebuilt the reputation,” but that it is time for them to go: "They’ve lasted a very long time and they were a great ship.” And as she looks down on this land of the long white cloud for the final time, 'the Queen of the Skies' will no doubt tip her wing — and crown — in respect to Richard Pearse and his piloting protégés who proved that kiwis can, after all, fly very, very well indeed.

JACK YAN – LUCIRE MAGAZINE Words: Angus St Clair Brown

Jack Yan, owner of Lucire magazine, is a dynamic and engaging figure who has packed a lot into his 41 years and as the proud possessor of a photographic memory, he also recalls most of it very well indeed. His family emigrated from Hong Kong when Jack was four and settled in Wellington, where he lives to this day. Jack was the dux of his primary/intermediate school and the runner-up at Scots College. It was at Scots that he had his first foray into publishing, putting together a student yearbook which proved to be a huge success, due in part no doubt to its cover image of Elle Macpherson in her underwear. By the age of 15, Jack had his own business creating typefaces for companies and restaurants around the Wellington region (he has since created over 100 typefaces). He wore a suit to university whilst studying commerce and law at Victoria, as he was also working full-time, now in graphic design and with an increasing focus on publishing. He had always been attracted to fashion magazines because of their beautiful layouts and photographic spreads and decided to start his own online fashion magazine as part of his honours degree in commerce. A friend suggested the name Lucire, which appealed to Jack because of its connotations of light and its European quality. It would be many years later that he discovered that it was in fact an old Romanian word meaning ‘to glitter’ or ‘to glisten’. The internet was then in its infancy, and Jack was perhaps one of the first people to start his own virtual company. Running the business from his office at home, photographers and editorial contributors would post their work on bulletin boards which Jack would download and incorporate into the magazine. The idea was initially to cover the Asia Pacific region, but the magazine

became increasingly international. A photographer in New York began supplying Lucire with photos and before long, Jack was covering New York, London, the Netherlands and Sweden and a certain critical mass had been achieved. When Condé Nast was launching Style.com they advertised initially in Lucire. Lucire is now always on the list of attending media at New York Fashion Week and has established itself as “part of the furniture,” as Jack says. It’s a great looking glossy magazine, available online and in print form. Jack tells me that they’re on the verge of launching Lucire Arabia which will vastly increase their circulation, currently sitting at around 300,000. As well as his publishing work, Jack has twice been a mayoral candidate for Wellington, is a Director of the Medinge Group think-tank, is a pioneering figure in the field of eco-fashion and is general counsel of the Miss Universe New Zealand competition.

ANTARCTICA No matter how well-travelled you are, there always remains one final frontier to be conquered. That for me, was Antarctica. I set off in March this year on an expedition-style cruise out of Ushuaia with 100 fellow passengers from all corners of the world. Don’t be put off by the word ‘expedition’, these cruises offer the best of both worlds — a true sense of exploration AND all the comforts of a modern ship, with spacious and extremely comfortable cabins. Leaving Ushuaia it was into the famed Drake Passage, which lived up to its reputation only for the first day on the way south. After two days of cruising we saw the first ice. It was real, we’d arrived. Great views were available from the open bridge as we navigated into bays and around icebergs. Even better, once you arrive at the Antarctic Peninsula, calm seas prevail as you are in the shelter of land. Twice a day we’d split up and pile into Zodiac inflatable boats to go ashore. The wildlife we encountered were so ambivalent to our presence you could get up close for photos. Chinstrap, Adeli and Gentoo Penguin chicks hassled their mums for the krill in their bellies. Ungainly and somewhat comical on land, they are wonderful swimmers, as they must be to survive — the slow ones end up as leopard seal dinners! The expedition staff were outstanding — a great bunch of highly qualified people who delighted in sharing their knowledge. They also doubled as Zodiac drivers who took us ashore, acted as guides, and often joined us for dinner. During the day we discussed history, birds, whales and geology, while over dinner it was politics, sex and theology. The whole thing had a relaxed ‘happy family’ feel about it.

The absolute highlight for me was cruising through the Lemaire Channel, aptly nicknamed 'iceberg alley'. It was totally surreal, slowly gliding through a sea of icebergs, some towering above you, in a myriad of stunning aquamarine blues. If you’re thinking of going to the Antarctic, book early! Cruising is only possible November to March when the temperatures are favourable, so there are limited sailings, and it’s a long wait until the next season! I have to say, the memories of whales breeching and beautiful icy scenes are the stuff dreams are made of. A frontier no longer.

Surprisingly it wasn’t anywhere near as cold as anticipated, being a dry cold. Layers of merino thermals, and keeping the wind out were enough to keep the warmth in and the parka you are supplied with (for keeps) offered amazing protection against the elements. A traditional polar plunge saw the more intrepid passengers tied to the ship for a mad dive into the freezing waters. Partakers soon beat a hasty retreat to the hot spa on deck. And you get a certificate for this insanity!

I’ve written about this website before, because it’s awesome. You can use it to study everything from history to calculus via free video lectures and interactive tests. Amazingly, and don’t laugh when you read this, it even makes maths fun. I know teachers that are using it in the classroom with great results — with groundbreaking tools that help them monitor the progress of their students across a wide range of skill levels and topics. Kids for their part see it as a game and work hard, even after school and at home, to increase their score. It would be easy to think that this was just something for children, but it doesn’t matter your age or your previous academic history — the website doesn’t care about that. The video mentioned above makes the point that even well known geniuses, such as Albert Einstein or William Shakespeare, started out not knowing how to tie their shoes or count to ten. It was something they learned to do. We all have an innate ability to learn (though we have different styles, preferences and attention spans) but we should not feel limited by opportunity. Sites like Khan Academy are that opportunity, and that was brought home to me again this week when our office administrator asked us how HTML and CSS work — two computer languages we use daily to produce websites. Her point was that, if she was going to run an office of web designers, it wouldn’t hurt to understand exactly what we did all day. Enter www.codeacademy.com, the coding equivalent of the aforementioned Khan Academy. MATTERS OF INTEREST: BALANCING THE BUDGET FOR YEARS TO COME

SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE INTO INDEPENDENCE

On August 28, I shared with Auckland where I think our spending should be prioritised over the next decade to strike a balance between investment in vital infrastructure and economic growth for all Aucklanders, while keeping our rates and debt low and sustainable.

Campaigning in Epsom the sense I get is that most people feel we are heading in the right direction and that the economy is going well. They still want to know that we’re doing everything we can to help young people get a job, especially in South Auckland and some of the remote rural regions. Young New Zealanders deserve more than a life of welfare dependency.

My budget proposal is not a final decision; it’s just the start of the conversation. The detail of the budget — the Long-term Plan 2015-2025 — will be debated and discussed with all Aucklanders over the coming months. What I can tell you is the council will continue to balance its budget every year.

Getting off welfare and into work brings a better life, more opportunities, and a brighter future. We know that teenage beneficiaries are at high risk of staying on welfare for a long period of time. If they get the help they need, thousands more young adults will be able to lead productive lives.

We are in good financial shape, which is reflected in our double-A credit rating, and we intend to keep it that way.

A re-elected National Government would extend the intensive support currently provided to our youngest beneficiaries (16 and 17-year-olds), to all teen parents on a benefit and many 18 and 19-year-old beneficiaries.

This budget is not about reducing services; it’s about finding smarter ways to do more and continue to operate a balanced budget.

The days of the “all care and no responsibility” approach are over. We are not going to throw taxpayers money at young people and leave them to their own devices.

Average rates increases will continue to stay low and predictable — between 2.5-3.5% to allow for inflation.

Work and Income has found many young adults who approach them for help need more than just money. They need a helping hand to get on their feet, and National is offering just that. Services to guide young beneficiaries into education or training or help them find a job will be extended so that more young adults have the opportunity to live a prosperous life.

The council will continue to invest around $3 billion a year across Auckland, from smaller local investments to large regional infrastructure investments. We have suffered from chronic under investment for decades — that had to stop, and at last we are drawing a line in history and sorting this out. We will continue to borrow to fund much-needed new assets, such as transport, spreading the costs over the generations who will benefit from them. We pay only 11 percent of our income to service this debt, compared with an average Auckland household which pays about a quarter of its income to service its mortgage – more than double Auckland Council. We can’t do everything, but what we are doing is making sure your money stretches further and ensuring Auckland remains a fantastic and affordable city to live and work. Public consultation begins next January and the final Long-term Plan is due for adoption June 2015.

Many more young adults will be mentored and advised on budgeting and parenting obligations with a capable adult from a community-based organisation. This is about taking a longterm approach to ensure these young people learn the skills they need to build fulfilled and aspirational lives. Money is loaded onto a payment card for groceries and essentials — not cigarettes or alcohol. Young beneficiaries’ bills, like rent and electricity, will be paid directly to suppliers until they are ready to take this on themselves. There are increased training and education opportunities waiting for them with 10,000 fees-free Youth Guarantee places for 16 to 19-year-olds and 20,000 places in the Apprenticeship Reboot programme. As a result, the number of people under 20 who are not in education, employment or training is now the lowest it has been since 2004. With 1,600 people going off welfare and into work every week, National’s significant welfare reforms are working well. There’s so much more we can do if we keep heading in the right direction.

GOVERNMENT’S TREATY TRADE-OFF OF LOCAL PARKS ALL WRONG

FOCUS ON FUNDING, NOT FAST-TRACKING

The government’s Treaty of Waitangi settlement transfer of Auckland’s most iconic volcanic cones to the ownership of 13 iwi will be generally welcomed by fair-minded Aucklanders but the government’s plan to leave the funding of their upkeep and of the joint iwi-council body set up to govern them, to Auckland ratepayers will not.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the City Rail Link will now be $484m cheaper with the latest decision to scrap plans for a Newton station and reduce the number of trains. This saving coupled with the latest increased figures for rail patronage has the Mayor once again pushing hard for a 2016 start date.

But at least this Treaty settlement was well-signalled beforehand. Last year I helped make public, plans by the government to transfer Gladstone Park, Parnell including tennis club, popular day-care centre and Fred Ambler lookout, to a Hauraki-based grouping of Iwi, Marutuahu, whose historic associations with Parnell, is tenuous to say the least.

Last year the Government effectively brought forward the start date of the City Rail Link from 2030 to 2020, and promised to work with Auckland Council to develop a joint business plan in 2017.

In response to widespread opposition from the local community, the government changed the terms of the settlement from ‘commercial redress’ to ‘cultural redress’ and promised to build in protection in the proposed settlement legislation. One of the commitments made by the Minister of Treaty Settlements Finlayson was that despite the ownership being transferred to Marutuahu, ‘Gladstone Park will always remain a park.’ However ownership is 9/10ths of the law and any conditions restricting exercise of that ownership will be difficult to maintain over time. And to fulfil the Parnell community’s most pessimistic expectations, before even getting their hands on the land, the Marutuahu group has lodged submissions to the Unitary Plan seeking a change of status of Gladstone Park from ‘public open space’ to ‘Maori purposes’. The later zoning would allow ‘marae and papakainga’ buildings and ‘economic development’ activities on the land. But Gladstone Park is just one of many pending Treaty settlement transfers of Crown-owned, council-managed parks and reserves across Auckland - most of which have been paid for and managed by ratepayers for well over 100 years. These transfers are being concealed from the public by the Office of Treaty Settlements, presumably on instructions from the government, until after the election, when the public will be presented with a fait accompli. While many of the proposed Treaty transfers are in response to historical claims by Iwi, which certainly have a lot more validity than the Gladstone Park give-away, they are still being kept secret from neighbours and users in particular, who are under the mistaken impression that the status of their local park is safe. This approach is all wrong for a number of reasons. Treaty of Waitangi claims need to be proven in a fair and open process. If found to be justified they need to be fully compensated for. Minister Finlayson’s approach, Treaty deals on the cheap, including the giving away of public parks on the quiet, regardless of the merits of the claim, of which Gladstone Park is a particular bad example, just creates another injustice. Auckland deserves better than this

However within six months however the Mayor was writing to the Prime Minister believing the start date was no longer good enough and saying he wanted to start construction regardless. He suggested bringing forward $250m of spending and volunteered ratepayers to underwrite the Government’s contribution until 2020. Mr Key wrote back and held the line, reiterating that the Government was committed to funding its 50% from 2020 unless rail patronage and CBD employment growth numbers significantly changed. Getting the cold shoulder from the Government however wasn’t enough to deter the Mayor. He remains determined to soldier on. I firmly believe we should be working to the Government’s more realistic timetable. That will also give the council time to sort out its funding. And it’s not as though things aren’t happening. The route has been secured, properties have been purchased, and project design is highly advanced. In fact Auckland ratepayers have already spent $99m on City Rail Link preconstruction work and there’s another $70m in this year’s budget. I would like to see more money going into bus infrastructure, but sadly the likes of a north western bus corridor just keeps getting deferred. The City Rail Link is already gobbling up money that could otherwise be spent on bus-lanes, ferry facilities, cycle and walkways. It’s crazy to think that this financial year 84% of Auckland Transport’s capital expenditure for public transport is going solely into rail, when still only about 1.6% of Auckland commuters catch the train according to Census 2013. The Mayor now needs to focus his energy on coming up with sustainable funding solutions. 2020 will come soon enough.

We are roughly doubling the number of people receiving a Government grant to buy a first home from 10,000 per year to 20,000 per year, and doubling the Government grant they are eligible for if buying a newly-built home. I think this package will make a real difference for many young Aucklanders. We are backing young Kiwis who are disciplined, save up and want to put a deposit down on a house. These changes will give a lot more people the confidence that if they join KiwiSaver, and keep saving, they can put together a deposit on their first house — providing stability for them, and their families, for years to come.

A newspaper photo of red poppies tumbling out of the window of the Tower of London caught my eye this week. By 11 November, (Armistice Day) 888,246 poppies will have been ‘planted’ around the Tower’s 16 acre moat. One for every soldier who was killed in World War 1.

Dolls and bears are fun — gentle reminders of our childhood in an increasingly complicated world.

These centenary commemorations made me think of my grandfathers, George and William, from Timaru and Te Kuiti. One of William’s stories always makes me smile. Sometime between 1914 and 1918, William took a gift of two rabbits to a long-lost cousin in England. He knew the people would be hungry. Returning months later, he felt silly when he was told the bunnies were both bucks. No rabbit stew for them. I’m sure you’ll have stories linked to significant personal events too. Do you remember huddling around the wireless with the family in 1945 and hearing that the war was over? Where were you in the Wahine Storm or the Napier Earthquake?

Doll and bear making and collecting is a fascinating hobby for both young and old and has become popular all over the world. Collectors may specialize in certain types of dolls and bears or those from a particular era - for example antique, 1950s, modern — or in the case of dolls, those made from a particular medium — for example bisque (unglazed porcelain), porcelain, composition, cloth, felt, wax, wood, hard plastic or vinyl. Collecting old dolls in original costumes is as much about the history of fashion as it is about the history of dolls. The mid 19th century French fashion dolls, forerunners of the mail-order catalogues, travelled around the world showing off the latest fashions from Europe. Originally made as toys for well-to-do children, the beautiful antique bisque dolls produced by the great French and German doll makers such as Bru, Jumeau, Armand Marseille, Simon & Halbig and Kestner are now much sought after by collectors. The first soft toy bears appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. In fact, the name “Teddy Bear” came into popular use in honour of the U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt who refused to shoot a helpless bear cub on a hunting trip. The American Ideal Novelty & Toy Co. made bears on a large scale and in Germany Steiff had also begun, later expanding to manufacture a number of other animals. In Britain there were a number of makers including Chad Valley, Merrythought, Chiltern Toys and Pedigree, all of whom produced other animals as well.

Personal stories too, such as reasons for emigrating, or pride in an achievement, are part of the family’s story. I’d bet these sports trophies could tell a story or two.

Over the years there have been a number of very famous bears — for example, Winnie the Pooh by author A.A. Milne, Rupert Bear by Mary Tourtel and Paddington Bear by Michael Bond.

As you’re reading this, what’s come back to mind? Your recollections are precious gems — and they deserve to be recorded in your words, as you remember them. It’s a gentle, relaxed process which only takes a couple of sessions. All you need to do is talk; I take care of everything else.

MARK VETTE TRAINING TIPS Mark Vette is an animal psychologist and animal behaviour expert, who stars in the new TV ONE series — Purina Pound Pups to Dogs Stars, which airs on Mondays at 7.30. The show follows Mark as he rescues dogs on death row at the pound, rehabilitates and trains them, turns them into dog stars and finds them loving homes. Mark says that many dogs are surrendered to the pound because of destructive behaviour or biting, even though it can be treated. As we all know, prevention is the best cure — so Mark shares some advice on how to train new puppies out of destructive or biting behaviours. When puppies are teething, they show a lot more interest in chewing, biting and mouthing. This is natural and expected in all puppies but some are more inclined than others. There are numerous reasons they chew a lot around this time — they are learning to use their nose and their taste, along with how to use their mouth. They are also learning what they can and can’t eat or play with, so this is where we need to give them a bit of a nudge in the right direction. Here are some tips to prevent puppies from chewing and biting things they shouldn’t: — Make sure the puppy has soft toys it can play with and chew, but make sure they do not resemble anything that is commonly found in the house (like shoes!).

— Don’t leave slippers or clothes lying on the ground in the first few month’s of your pup’s life. — To discourage biting, when the pup approaches to mouth, bite or nip, simply let your hand be enclosed by their jaw and roll their lip onto their teeth and press down slightly as they bite, until they pull away. — Alternatively, press your thumb down under their tongue and pinch down against your forefinger on the underside of the jaw again, until they pull away. — As you use the above two techniques, use a firm 'no' command.

— Try rope, tennis balls if you don’t play tennis, special wood toys for dogs with no sharp edges, or toys from the pet store.

— Your puppy still needs to bite and chew, so encourage this in the form of playing fetch or tug of war — this fulfils their natural behaviour to hunt or chase, but shows them what is appropriate to chew. Plus, this is great playtime that helps your dog keep happy and fit!

— We don’t recommend soft teddy bears, blankets and pillows as this will encourage them to chew cushions, couches and bedding.
