2020 is a hugely exciting year for Toyota worldwide being a key sponsor of this years Tokyo Olympic games. Welcome to our spring edition of the Vertu Toyota Link magazine. As 2020 and a new decade gets underway it’s a pleasure to update you on all things new at Vertu Toyota Chesterfield. The motor industry is at a very exciting point as global manufacturers gain momentum on the journey to electrification.

So why all the fuss? Essentially measures are in play across the UK and Europe to ensure that future cars produced meet stringent emissions rules. A better planet for us all and a challenge I am more than confident that Toyota will not only meet but excel with the technologies available right now and in the future.

As we entered into 2020 a huge 15490 customers in the UK had a Toyota Hybrid on order for 2020 delivery.

The Aygo really does have a fun-to-drive character.

The All New Yaris renews the model’s reputation for ground-breaking achievements. Due for launch during the second half of 2020, it will strengthen its position as Toyota’s best-selling model in Europe, benefiting from significant advances in design and engineering.

The All New Yaris is the first model to be built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-B modular platform for small cars. This is the foundation for radically improved dynamic performance, safety and design freedom of the kind already witnessed in other TNGA-based Toyota models, such as the new Corolla, C-HR and RAV4.

THE RETURN OF THE HOMOLOGATION SPECIAL

Toyota has released images and details of the forthcoming Yaris GR. A turbocharged, all wheel drive three door variant of the soon to be launched Yaris. The Yaris GR is the homologation model for its 2020 WRC world rally car.

Powered by a bespoke 1.6 litre turbocharged three cylinder engine, the 257bhp Yaris GR reaches 0-62mph in just 5.5 seconds. The four wheel drive system can split the torque between the axles depending on a selected driver mode.

Despite sharing a name with Yaris hatchback this is a three door only model, featuring a bespoke body which is wider and lower than the standard 5 door model. This incredible car weighs just 1280kg resulting in lightening quick handling and responsiveness. It really is a race car for the road, a road legal 2020 Gazoo Racings 2020 WRC car which requires a production run to homologate the race car. 25,000 examples will need to be built to comply with the WRC regulations with pricing still to be confirmed. In 2017, Toyota re-entered the World Rally Championship with the Yaris WRC, inspiring development of the performance-focused Yaris GRMN road car. Drawing directly on the competition success of Toyota Gazoo Racing, this limited-edition Yaris – the first global GRMN model – was an instant sell-out.

This history of innovation has helped Yaris grow from generation to generation, with more than four million sold in Europe, including more than 500,000 hybrids.

The new, fourth generation Yaris marks the debut of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-B platform that will be used for new generations of small Toyota vehicles and their derivatives. It will continue to be manufactured in Europe; more than €300 million (around £270 million) has been invested in Toyota Motor Manufacturing France’s operations to enable GA-B-based vehicle production.

With the experience of developing two generations of its Prius Plug-in Hybrid model, Toyota is wellequipped to produce an impressive new powertrain for RAV4. With full system output of 302bhp/225kW*, this has the potential to deliver acceleration from rest to 62mph in just 6.2 seconds*, outperforming any of its conventionally powered rivals. Moreover, it is also on course to deliver best-in-class CO2 emissions and fuel economy: Toyota’s pre-homologation, WLTPstandard data indicates CO2 output of less than 30g/km*. These levels are unmatched by any current D-segment plug-in hybrid AWD SUV.

RAV4 PLUG-IN HYBRID

Toyota has harnessed the potential of electric power to achieve a significant increase in output compared to the standard RAV4 Hybrid. It has developed a new, high-capacity lithium-ion battery and added a boost converter to the hybrid system’s power control unit. The 2.5litre hybrid petrol engine is the same unit as featured in the regular RAV4 Hybrid.

The result is not just rapid off-the-line acceleration: RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will also have a greater driving range in pure electric EV mode, with zero petrol consumption and exhaust emissions. The expected range (WLTP standard) is of more than 37 miles (60km)*, further than competitor plug-in hybrid SUVs and beyond the 31mile (50km) average European daily commuting distance.

Toyota is about to open a new chapter in the history of RAV4, the world’s original recreational/lifestyle SUV. This first plug-in hybrid version of RAV4 draws on more than 20 years of Toyota leadership in hybrid powertrain technology to offer customers a vehicle that promises to be not only more powerful than any other in its class, but also more efficient in terms of emissions and fuel consumption.

RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid’s position at the top of the RAV4 range is founded on its combination of high power and performance, exceptional efficiency, the dynamic excellence of its GA-K platform and the on and off-road handling capabilities provided by its standard AWD-i intelligent electric allwheel drive system. It will further broaden the appeal of the fifth generation RAV4, which has reaffirmed its historic status as one of Europe’s most popular SUVs, with more than 120,000 customer orders in Western Europe since its launch earlier in 2019. Of this figure, more than 105,000 have been hybrid models.

RAV4 WINS BEST MEDIUM SUV TITLE IN THE 2020 4×4 OF THE YEAR AWARDS The new RAV4 has triumphed in 4×4 Magazine’s 4×4 of the Year Awards, named Best Medium SUV. The award reflects the all-round qualities of the fifth generation of Toyota’s compact SUV. It also sustains RAV4’s reputation for market-leading success since the original model created the concept of the recreational SUV 25 years ago.

4×4 Magazine said: “The Medium SUV award category probably had more potential winners in it than any other, but the new RAV4 was a

clear winner. Its styling is brilliant inside and out, it’s superbly made and it’s as pleasing to drive as it is practical. It came incredibly close to taking the overall win, only coming second behind a vehicle costing three times as much.”

In its awards report, 4×4 Magazine hails RAV4 – an all-hybrid model – as “the slickest of all the current crop of medium SUVs,” praising its “modern, classy and well-made” appearance. The multimedia system, cabin space and ease of loading are all highlighted and the hybrid powertrains – front or all-wheel

drive – are commended for their smooth and quiet character.

A “natural feel” in the steering and composed suspension add to the positives, together with the vehicle’s ability to automatically switch to all-electric power whenever possible – a key benefit of Toyota’s “full hybrid” technology.

Value for money is a critical factor, too, the new RAV4 offering “a lot of kit for your money, as well as a very good SUV indeed”.

For 2020, RAV4 is newly available with smartphone integration as standard on all models, providing both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions. Demonstrators are ready to impress at Vertu Toyota Chesterfield.

TOYOTA BECOMES ALL-HYBRID AND ADDS NEW VERSIONS FOR 2020 The impressive popularity of the Britishbuilt Hatchback and Touring Sports, plus the elegant New Corolla Saloon, is now being enriched with a series of upgrades and new model versions for 2020.

Significantly, the New Corolla becomes exclusively a hybrid range in the UK with the discontinuation of the 1.2T turbo petrol engine. The new line-up carries forward Toyota’s improved 120bhp 1.8litre system and the new, 181bhp 2.0litre hybrid which made its debut with the model. This dual hybrid strategy – also applied to the new C-HR crossover – gives drivers the traditional rewards of Toyota’s self-charging hybrid technology with low emissions, fuel efficiency and a relaxing drive, plus improved response and, with the 2.0-litre, greater power on demand, effortless acceleration and added fun-to-drive quality.

New Corolla GR Sport The New Corolla is the latest model to benefit from the influence of Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s

global championship-winning motorsport arm, with the introduction of new GR Sport models. These feature design and specification details that give the car a wider, more planted and powerful look and a sportier cabin ambience.

The equipment specification matches the Corolla Design grade and further includes a new seven-inch colour TFT multiinformation screen with 3D-effect graphics, and a colour head-up display.

The dedicated styling elements include a sharper design for various aspects of the car including new 18 inch black alloy wheels, the finishing touches being black backgrounds for Toyota emblems, official GR badging and the option of a new Ash Grey paint finish.

New Corolla Touring Sports TREK celebrates a partnership between Toyota and the internationally renowned bicycle manufacturer TREK. It stands apart from the rest of the range with its SUVinfluenced look: the suspension has been raised by 20mm and special exterior styling details have been added, including black edging for the front and rear bumpers, silver-finished front and rear under-runs, black wheel arch mouldings and black rocker panels with silver inserts. There’s a new machined/black contrast design for the 17-inch alloy wheels and TREK badging on the tailgate, plus rear privacy glass, a honeycomb-pattern grille and LED headlights. Perfect for an adventure.

The GR Sport cabin is fitted with sports front seats, upholstered in fabric with a dedicated pinstripe pattern and with seatback and cushion bolsters finished in black and grey synthetic leather. It is also equipped with Toyota’s latest multimedia package, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions for seamless smartphone integration.

2020 Corolla range The new-look Corolla range is available in Icon, Icon Tech, Design, Excel and GR Sport grade for the Hatchback and, with the addition of TREK trim, Touring Sports. The New Corolla Saloon, powered by the 1.8-litre hybrid system, is offered in Icon, Icon Tech and Design specifications.

The New Corolla has taken the title of Best Hybrid Car in the 2020 What Car? Awards, leading a haul of three honours for the brand.

The awards also saw the Toyota Yaris Hybrid taking the title for Best Hybrid Car for Less Than £20,000 and the Toyota AYGO being named the Best Value Car (priced between £10,000 to £12,000).

What Car? said: “The Toyota Corolla comfortably beats the fuel economy of pure petrol-powered rivals and betters a fair few diesels in its 1.8-litre form that we recommend. The New Corolla Hatchback and Touring Sports are built at Toyota’s UK car plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, and use engines supplied by its factory in Deeside, North Wales.

Corolla has pioneered Toyota’s new dual hybrid strategy as the first Toyota model in Europe to offer customers the choice of two hybrid powertrains – 1.8 and 2.0-litre – offering a wider range of performance but with uncompromised fuel and emissions efficiency.

Following Corolla’s lead, the same choice has recently been extended to the C-HR compact crossover.

The strength-in-depth of Toyota’s hybrid technology helped the Yaris compact hatchback claim the award for best hybrid car costing less than £20,000. This success follows on from its 100 per cent fault-free record in the What Car? 2019 Reliability Survey The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is one of the most efficient cars we’ve ever tested, returning 80mpg around town and doing decently on the motorway.

Toyota’s third award recognised the great value of its AYGO city car. What Car? commented: “AYGO has plenty more going for it than just funky looks. Not only is it cheaper to buy than rivals in our recommended x-play trim, but its 1.0-litre petrol engine is gutsy yet efficient, so should be cheap to run. It’s agile around town, too, with a tight turning circle, which makes it ideal for city car parks.”

Toyota’s C-HR Hybird crossover has undergone its first important updates since its launch in 2016. Well-established as one of the brand’s best-selling models in the UK, it now boasts an all-hybrid line-up and benefits from new equipment features and dynamic improvements.

It follows the new Corolla in adopting Toyota’s dual hybrid strategy, giving customers the choice of a new-generation 1.8-litre hybrid system or a more powerful, all-new 2.0-litre powertrain.

Engines and performance The New Toyota C-HR Hybrid is unique in its class in giving customers the choice of two

different hybrid powertrains. The established, 120bhp 1.8-litre hybrid system remains in the range, but with its eco performance enhanced by an upgrade to a lithium-ion high-voltage battery and by size, weight and efficiency improvements in all its principal hybrid components. CO2 emissions start from 86g/km (NEDC correlated data)/109g/km (WLTP data).

The additional powertrain is a new 2.0-litre system that produces 182bhp, with CO2 emissions from 92g/km (NEDC correlated data)/119g/km (WLTP data). It features an all-new 2.0-litre petrol engine that achieves a maximum thermal efficiency of 41 per cent – the world’s highest level for a

mass-produced engine – which means more of the energy potential in every drop of fuel is captured.

As well as greater power and higher efficiency, the 2.0-litre hybrid versions of C-HR benefit from uprated suspension and improved noise and vibration countermeasures.

Multimedia system with smartphone integration The New Toyota C-HR Hybrid introduces Toyota’s latest developments in connectivity and infotainment. Its new, 2019 multimedia system incorporates Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, allowing the most commonly used smartphones to not just synchronise, but actually merge with the car’s media-system.

Provided as standard equipment, this also enables over-the-air map updates for the navigation system. Toyota provides a free three-year subscription for updates (available every six months) on every New Toyota C-HR Hybrid.

Chesterfield-based Brampton Rovers AFC Under 8s team, who play in the Sheffield & District Junior League, are proudly wearing their new shirts for the 2019/20 season.

The young budding footballers are a new team into the league.

Dave Littlewood, general manager at Vertu Toyota Chesterfield, said: “Brampton Rovers are a great team that does a lot to support grass roots junior football in our area. None of the youngsters have ever played in any team activity before so we wanted to give them a helping hand by providing the team kit.

The children’s faces were well worth seeing when John Wood from Vertu Toyota and the football coach Rob Stone presented the kit to the team.

I’m really pleased to be able to support the young players as part of our commitment to be an active part of the local community. It will be great to see the players sporting their new kits and we will be watching closely for their results.”

Vertu Toyota Chesterfield SUPPORT FOR ASHGATE HOSPICECARE Vertu Toyota Chesterfield has committed to ongoing support for local charity Ashgate Hospicecare following many years supporting the organisation.

The dealership, based on Lockoford Lane, supports yearly events held by the charity including the sparkle night walk, classic car show, open air cinema and light up a life Christmas event. General manager David Littlewood also commits a significant amount of his own time to volunteering at the hospice and has a strong bond with employees and other volunteers.

Recently, Vertu Toyota Chesterfield donated a van to the charity which will be used to transport vital equipment to patients’ homes across North Derbyshire, to help them stay at home when it matters most. The specially branded van will also make appearances at various events, raising awareness of the hospice and supporting the hospice’s fundraising efforts.

Ashgate Hospicecare offers specialist care and support to patients with life-limiting illnesses and extends its support to families during these tough times.

CHESTERFIELD STUDENTS DREAM UP GREEN VEHICLES FOR TOYOTA COMPETITION Vertu Toyota Chesterfield is helping students from St Mary’s Catholic High School to be creative and design their dream vehicles.

Pupils at the local secondary school took part in the Toyota Dream Car Contest 2020 to draw and paint fantasy vehicles for the future. The competition has one rule; all vehicles must help to protect and sustain the world’s natural environment.

Vertu Toyota Chesterfield has supported the international competition, organised by Toyota, by awarding its own prizes to the top three drawings at the school. The Toyota Dream Car Art Contest invites children from all corners of the globe to share ideas about the future of mobility by designing their dream cars.

The students’ artwork will now be entered in the national competition and then, if successful, advance to the global contest.

The three winners were:

A NEW COMPACT VAN TO STRENGTHEN TOYOTA’S LCV LINE-UP

The All New PROACE CITY, a highly capable and attractive new compact van range that will further strengthen Toyota’s European light commercial vehicle line-up.

Developed in collaboration with Groupe PSA, PROACE CITY will join the established PROACE medium duty van, and the legendary Hilux pick-up in building Toyota’s LCV market presence, competing in segment that’s enjoying steady growth and is on course to achieve around 900,000 sales in Europe by 2021.

Performance and capabilities: size, space and performance The PROACE CITY range meets a wide range of business needs, with different loading and seating configurations and powertrain options.

The compact van is presented in two different lengths – short at 4.4m and long at 4.7m. Both can be specified with three front seats, and as panel or glass vans; the long version is also available as a crew cab. The passenger version is offered with five or seven seats both in the short and long version.

The dimensions and packaging give PROACE CITY excellent load capacity, with maximum volume from 3.3m3 (short model) to 4.3m3 (long version with Smart Cargo option). Notably the Toyota is one of few vehicles in its class that can accommodate two Euro pallets. Adding the Smart Cargo system option gives best-in-class load length capability of 3.1m for the short version and 3.4m for the long, while the maximum payload is another class-best figure at one tonne (both versions). For those who need to carry even greater or heavier loads, the van can tow braked trailers up to 1.5 tonnes. Asymmetrical rear doors (glazed or unglazed) or a top-hinged tailgate can be specified.
