Moto GP teams roll into Silverstone. You may well have seen the extensive coverage Honda achieved at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The New Honda e prototype silently seared up the hill as a new dawn beckons for the future of Honda and indeed for motoring in the UK. Our dealership teams at Vertu Honda continue to go from strength to strength.

The foundation of passionate Honda people we have is something I am particularly proud of. I believe that having knowledgeable and interesting people you can connect with in our teams are the fabric of our longevity of sustained success with Honda in the UK. This year we were once again amongst the award winners at the National Honda Awards. Our local business team, led by Andrew White, won Corporate Sales team of the year. An achievement that everyone at Vertu Honda felt pride in.

The world is an everchanging place, and with Honda, we are seeing rapid progress being made in new technologies as a world leading force in producing electrified and hybrid power options along with petrol powered products producing some of the lowest emissions in Europe. Honda, as you know, use the track as their development laboratory In the last month alone we have witnessed Formula 1 and MotoGP wins for our Red Bull and Repsol Honda teams. In my view this is a hugely exciting time to be a Honda retailer and a time when you, our valued customer, will experience the benefits of extensive research and development in products and services you buy in the future.

This year we have enjoyed a quintessentially British summer. The events we have been part of so far including the Rutland County Show, Heckington Show, Nottingham Motor Show, Melton Show, Catterick Garrison Forces day and numerous local events to name but a few, have enabled us to catch up with customers old and new.

Our bikes teams at Nottingham and Grantham have spent quality time on customer ride outs including a ride to HondaRacing Headquarters, Louth, a stones throw away from Cadwell Park.

The Lincolnshire Wolds always a joy on two wheels! These are always fun events and I know our teams all want to add value to the communities we are part of up and down the country.

HONDA CR-V WINS TITLE OF ‘BEST CAR LAUNCHED IN THE LAST YEAR’ IN AUTO TRADER AWARDS 2019

The latest-generation Honda CR-V continues to prove its credentials as the world’s most popular SUV, winning the title of ‘Best Car Launched Last Year’ in the influential Auto Trader New Car Awards.

The Auto Trader New Car Awards collated feedback from a survey of more than 60,000 car owners. The CR-V was ranked highest by real owners for comfort and cost of servicing, thanks to the option of a 5 year service plan for £599 (Inc. VAT) on all brand new Honda models. High scores for durability and safety reflect the models recent 5-star Euro NCAP rating and comprehensive suite of Honda Sensing active safety technologies as standard.

Beating off competition from some big names, Honda CR-V owners were impressed by the quality of the interior, with its sleek design and contemporary, sophisticated trim. The in-car features and accessories were also cited, as the CR-V

offers enhanced intuitive operation and full, seamless smartphone integration via both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A spacious cabin with an increase of 50mm between the first- and second-row of seats, and class-leading forward visibility, also helped the CR-V to be ranked highly for comfort and quality.

ELECTRIC vs HYBRID THE FUTURE OF MOTORING

We are entering a period of rapid change in the motor sector. Honda is at the forefront of Hybrid technology. After a brief absence from the market it launched its revolutionary next generation i-MMD system in the CR-V earlier this year. This technology will, in time, feature in the whole range. Hybrids will also be complimented by all electric vehicles, the first of which, the Honda e, joins the range in spring 2020. Below is a brief summary of some of the most common questions regarding hybrid and electric cars. It’s going to be an exciting journey and we’d very much like you to be fully informed and be a part of this revolution with Honda.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HYBRID, A PLUG-IN HYBRID AND AN ELECTRIC CAR?

HOW FAR CAN I DRIVE WITH A HYBRID CAR? Due to the fact that the hybrid car has a conventional motor as well as an electric one, you can expect a similar range, or more, to that of a standard petrol or diesel car.

With a full tank, the petrol CR-V will travel for around 400 miles, whilst the hybrid CR-V has a range of almost 700 miles.

However, a plug-in hybrid has the ability to travel a distance on electricity only. Most plug-in hybrid cars currently on the market offer an all-electric range of 20 to 40 miles.

ADVANTAGES OF A HYBRID CAR

• The main difference is that an electric car is fully electric while both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid are essentially petrol-electric.

• When there’s enough charge in the battery pack, many hybrid cars can pull away using electricity only.

• Hybrid cars use a combination of both petrol and electricity in order to power the car.

• Indeed, these hybrid cars can travel for short distances at low speed without using any fuel at all.

• However, when it comes to the hybrid and plug-in hybrid, the difference is that the plug-in hybrid can be plugged in and charged. This allows it to drive solely on electric power for what is typically a range of 20 to 40 miles.

• One of the main advantages of a hybrid car therefore, is that it improves fuel economy as well as reducing overall emissions, saving the environment and the driver’s money!

• In contrast, a standard hybrid charges its own battery when moving, allowing it to provide assistance in low speeds and in acceleration. The current Hybrid cars in Hondas range are i-MMD Hybrids, a combination of an electric motor which gains its charge from regenerative braking and a petrol engine. This technology will be rolled across the range; indeed, the next Jazz will have a 1.5 i-MMD Hybrid drivetrain. The Civic and HR-V will also have Hybrid derivatives in the future.

• The effectiveness of the hybrid car is enhanced in urban areas where traffic jams are common and air pollution a real problem.

• Electric cars have a battery pack, normally lithium Ion. These require charging from a mains supply/charging point. Range can vary depending on the size of battery pack. The forthcoming Honda e, designed for city driving, has a range of 125 miles, it can be charged to 80% range in thirty minutes on a rapid charge. In time the Honda e will be joined by a range of electric Honda models.

• Hybrid cars have become more affordable over time as the technology has become more commonplace.

• Since the vast majority of hybrid vehicles are automatics, drivers who choose the hybrid car find it offers a smooth driving experience with little in the way of noise.

• A hybrid car may also be a good compromise for those who are interested but not quite ready for a fully electric car, particularly because a hybrid car doesn’t need to be charged.

Driving a hybrid car feels much the same as driving other vehicles.

However, there are some more subtle differences, particularly from those who switch over from a manual transmission. That’s because hybrid cars are in the main automatics, the Honda CR-Z was the only Hybrid to have a manual gearbox. Automatics tend to offer a smoother and quieter ride with less engine noise and vibrations, particularly when accelerating using electricity. When it comes to acceleration, the hybrid provides a more moderate, constant speed since it doesn’t need to go through manual gear changes.

It's also worth noting that driving a hybrid is a different experience in that the driver learns how best to recharge the battery using the brakes and the resistance from engine braking. By using engine resistance to slow down earlier for traffic lights or a roundabout, for example, the car charges its battery more quickly and frequently, making for a more fuel-efficient drive.

At the Geneva Motorshow earlier this year Honda announced its intention to move 100 per cent of its European sales to electrified powertrains by 2025. This new ambition builds on the brand’s 2017 aim of two-thirds of its sales to be electrified by 2025, and places it firmly at the forefront of Honda’s global electrification shift announced as part of its 2030 vision.

HONDA E PROTOTYPE UNVEILED Further proof of Honda’s electrification ambition was seen in the shape of the Honda e Prototype. Unveiled for the first time in the UK at Goodwood Festival of Speed, the car previews Honda’s first production battery electric vehicle for the European market.

FURTHER ROLL OUT OF FULL HYBRID TECHNOLOGY Early in 2019, Honda successfully launched the all-new CR-V Hybrid, featuring its twomotor i-MMD full hybrid technology. The iMMD hybrid system will be available in the next generation of the popular Jazz hatchback, expected in 2020, and rolled out across the range in the forthcoming years, including Civic and HR-V. Honda expects full hybrid technology to play a key role in meeting its aims of 100% electrification by 2025.

HONDA TO DEVELOP ENERGY MANAGEMENT BUSINESS FOR EUROPE Honda took the opportunity of its Geneva press conference to share the first details of its developing energy management solutions business for Europe. This announcement builds on the Power Manager bi-directional charging concept first shown at Frankfurt motor show in 2017.

Honda intends to build a portfolio of energy management products and services offering a comprehensive solution for both EV customers and service operators in Europe.

The first fully electric vehicle from honda will be arriving in the UK early 2020.

Previewed in the last edition of The Link, further details have now been released.

An urban commuter, the Honda e is powered by a water cooled lithium-ion 35.5 kWh battery, positioned centrally, resulting in a perfect 50:50 weight distribution. A single electric motor feeds the drive to the rear wheels. Being an urban vehicle driving characteristics will focus on sprightly acceleration, excellent level of visibility and high levels of manoeuvrability with an ultra-tight turning circle.

Honda e features a competitive range of 125 miles and a ‘fast charge’ functionality providing 80% range in just 30 minutes. It also features trademark Honda driving dynamics with a sporty rear wheel drive configuration.

The contemporary styling of the Honda e is characterised by clean, simple body lines, smooth contours and stepless A-pillars that sit virtually flush with the glass. Inside, the spacious, contemporary interior creates a comfortable lounge-like feel with an intuitive and customisable dual touch-screen interface to keep passengers engaged with their connected lifestyles.

Five colour options will be available, comprising of; Platinum White Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, Crystal Blue Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic and the striking Charge Yellow.

The production version of the Honda e Prototype will be unveiled later this year.

Vertu Honda has won the ‘Corporate Dealer of the Year’ award for a third time, as part of Honda (UK)’s annual awards to recognize the top performing dealers within its car network.

On Thursday 16th May more than 400 representatives from across Honda (UK)’s car dealership network came together with senior management to celebrate the successes of 2018/2019 and look forward to the forthcoming year, which has already seen the successful introduction of a much-anticipated CR-V Hybrid.

CLIMATE CONTROL AND AIR CONDITIONING

Climate control systems are commonplace on modern vehicles and as a Honda driver you should expect to travel in comfort, your climate control system performs a major part in this task by keeping the interior of your car (cabin) at your desired temperature.

The climate control system allows you to dictate the temperature of the cabin, and in some vehicles, dual zone setting allows the driver side and the passenger side to be set at different temperatures. Once the desired temperature is set, the climate control system automatically calculates the temperature at which to blow air into the cabin to obtain your desired temperature. It is important to remember that in different circumstances varying temperatures of air will be emitted from the air vents, for instance if the climate control temperature is set to 20 and the cabin temperature is 25, cool air will blow from the vents, but if the cabin temperature is 15, warm air will be blown from the vents until the desired temperature is met.

The climate control system depends heavily on the operation of the vehicles air conditioning. It is important that your air conditioning system is kept in good working order to optimise your comfort. With this in mind we recommend that the refrigerant gas within your air conditioning system is recharged every 2 to 3 years as natural migration of the gas occurs over time. The recharge procedure includes removal of the existing gas, applying a vacuum to the system to draw out any moisture or debris that may have entered the system and recharging with the factory specified amount of gas. Bear in mind also that your air conditioning is used to dehumidify the air that de-mists your windscreen during winter months.

Regular maintenance is the key.

Tim Watts, business manager at Vertu Boston Honda is celebrating after receiving recognition at a national awards ceremony.

Tim was named ‘Business Manager of the Year’ at Vertu Motors CEO Awards dinner, hosted by the Group’s CEO, Robert Forrester, at Oulton Hall in Leeds.

He began his career in the sector at the age of 18 working in administration at an accident repair centre and has worked in different roles including as a service adviser.

Tim, who lives in Boston, oversees a sales team of five.

The CEO Awards recognise the company’s ‘gamechanging’, top-performing colleagues from each area of the business, who have delivered exceptional performances and produced outstanding results.
