Partnering for success with DWP
FREDA migration, from stalled to success
DWP encountered challenges with the stalled migration of the FREDA application from on-premises to AWS, initially handled by another supplier.
The application also required modernisation to improve its performance, reliability, and scalability. DWP engaged Version 1 to take over both the stalled migration and modernisation.
Our primary goal was to reduce your total cost of ownership, improve uptime, enhance recoverability, and introduce modern development and deployment practices.

The migration was performed seamlessly, ensuring minimal disruption to your end users. The solution included redesigning release pipelines with GitLab, implementing a highly available architecture, and adopting a robust and scalable 3-tier datacentre.
We also provided comprehensive training to DWP staff on using CI/CD pipelines, ensuring best practices through the AWS Partnership and the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP).
The project delivered a 10% reduction in the total cost of ownership, improved uptime with 99.9% availability, and enhanced RTO and RPO to within a 2-hour window. Moreover, the migration fostered a cultural shift towards embracing cloud-first principles and continuous learning, providing significant long-term benefits to DWP.
By partnering with Version 1, DWP overcame the challenges of the stalled migration and positioned itself for future success with a modern, scalable, and reliable infrastructure.

Mastering cloud costs: FinOps tagging
DWP recently completed a large-scale migration to AWS, primarily using ‘Rehosting’ and ‘Replatforming’ due to tight deadlines. Post-migration, the focus shifted to managing the AWS estate, as cloud costs were rising significantly, estimated between £1.2 – £1.4 million per month.
To address this, we were tasked with improving tag compliance across your AWS estate without disrupting existing production services. We developed a unified retrospective tagging approach to maximise compliance with minimal operational disruption.
Our team rapidly prototyped and iterated a solution, conducting limited manual rollouts in controlled environments. This powerful retrospective tag compliance solution empowered developers to fix tag compliance for their products consistently and without impacting production environments. The solution was integrated into the client’s GitLab compliance framework, ensuring compliance across approximately 10,000 repositories.
The solution led to increased tag compliance, providing your FinOps team with comprehensive data for true insight into cloud costs. This allowed for better categorisation and comparison of

cloud costs across business units, teams, and applications, increasing accountability and cost awareness. The FinOps team could also identify and terminate noncompliant resources more easily, significantly decreasing cloud costs and improving visibility, accountability, and traceability.

This collaboration delivers sustainable transformation and boosts public safety and road user experience by modernising infrastructure and enhancing traffic flow, making England’s roads safer and more efficient.

As the chosen digital transformation partner for Companies House, we propel their digital transformation through a landmark initiative, unlocking significant value through expertise in modernisation and automation. while effectively managing risks.

Cafcass
Cafcass collaborated with Version 1 to seamlessly migrate its case management system to the cloud, delivering sustainable digital transformation and maintenance with an ongoing managed service by Version 1. This initiative unlocked considerable operational efficiencies and financial savings of approximately 40%, ensuring system availability and compliance with legislative deadlines. By reallocating budget to frontline services, Cafcass can now focus on its core mission.
Large UK Government Department
A major UK government department partnered with Version 1 to migrate over 40 Oracle databases to the cloud, achieving substantial cost savings and operational efficiencies. Provisioning time was reduced by approximately 99.5% and post-deployment checks were reduced to 1/12 of the original time. This strategic initiative ensured robust data security, providing a resilient and secure cloud solution that unlocked substantial value while effectively managing risks.
