COUNTING STEPS Pros, cons of meeting goals with fitness trackers

F

itbit ® is a small device designed to track various health and fitness activities, allowing you the opportunity to set goals and track your progress. And it’s a super-hot trend in the world of fitness and weight loss.

So is there some truth in the saying that good things come in small packages?

The basic functions of a Fitbit include measuring all-day activities (counting steps, distance, calories burned, etc.). In addition, most devices feature music control and automatic sleep tracking.

Fitbits with more functions are available but are typically more expensive. For example, the Surge has built-in GPS, the Blaze features step-by-step instructions and coaching with on-screen workouts, Flex 2 is swim-proof while the Charge 2 includes a feature called the Cardio Fitness Level, which provides your fitness rating based on age range and gender.

“I like the variety of features, especially that it records if I forget to log in the workout,” said John-Arthur Ingram, a tutor at Exponential Tutoring in Ventura. He owns the Blaze and depends on it for his daily runs.

The devices come in various styles, from wristband, watch and clipon to removable trackers that can be embedded in jewelry. While there are many choices, the particular functions that one may need in a device may not be available in a certain style. Presumably, this may be a significant disadvantage for many as this is a device that one would wear on a regular basis, and comfort is key. In addition, some features are provided in only one device, so if specific functions are of great significance to a potential buyer but unavailable on one Fitbit, purchase may be challenging.

None of these potential assets or flaws is unique to the Fitbit, so while it may indeed be considered a good thing in a small package, so can other available fitness trackers.

Rocio Rosales, an instructor at Legacy Martial Arts in Oxnard, uses a Garmin Vivo Fit 2, and like Ingram, she decided to do so because she was seeking motivation and a means to track mileage.

She found that the lightweight device helped her improve her sleeping habits.

“The only thing I dislike about this particular model is, in order to track my heart rate, I have to wear a heart rate monitor strap and it’s a bit annoying because I have to stop my activity if I forgot to put it on before.”

On the other hand, Ingram often gets frustrated with his device due to unreliability with syncing.

Overall, it seems that fitness trackers not only offer information one needs to monitor and improve lifestyle, but also the opportunity to inspire and be inspired by interacting with others through an app.

“I’m average satisfied. I can tolerate the flaws,” stated Ingram while Rosales said, “I’m satisfied with my fitness tracker. It gets me to be more active even on days I want to be lazy.”

One thing to keep in mind, however, according to Fitbit users reviewing the effectiveness of weight loss online, is that without a proper restricted diet and consistency in meeting step goals, losing unwanted pounds may be hard to achieve. fhb

here are undoubtedly many roads to better health, and resistance flexibility and strength training (RFST), conceived by Bob Cooley, is one of them. Like many, it requires patience and dedication. Like some, it is more than just a workout program, it is a lifestyle. Unlike others, it is based on the concept of contracting a specific muscle and resisting its extension.

“RFST isn’t something that can be done ‘to’ you. You have to be fully present and attentive, engaging your muscles, your attention, and noticing what is happening for you while engaging in the activity, which itself is, on the surface, pretty simple,” explained Patrick Gregston, an Elite Intern at Cooley’s The Genius of Flexibility in Santa Barbara. Although the main studio is based in Santa Barbara, there is another in Los Angeles, and classes are also offered in Ventura County, with one in Ventura at Chakra Strength.

It is a misconception noted by Gregston that some often

believe that to stretch is to pull/push on oneself, rather than allowing yourself to follow the body’s natural movement.

Whether it is a class of two or 25, or children aged 10 to adults to the elderly, the importance of the mind-body connection is imparted early on and, most importantly, the misconceptions are rectified. The journey that follows is unique to each individual, as are the reasons that brought each person to RFST, but there is great commonality in how the thinking and feeling processes occur.

For example, Gregston found relief from years of back pain, managed to resist his frequent sugar cravings and also learned how to readily self-address discomforts his body might present.

Meanwhile, his eldest son found a path to increased composure, decreased his intake of alcohol, lost 40 pounds and learned a valuable skill that he now also uses to help others.

RFST seemingly alters all aspects of one’s life.

“My sense of acceptance about myself started extending to accepting things in others. All of this generates a sense of well-being that continues to grow,” said Gregston. “For most all of our lives, we are taught to think our bodies are there to carry our brains around and, when appropriate, be presentable and attractive. In RFST we say that your body is a source of information and wisdom about how life is working for you, and not just in your body.”

The classes are taught by certified individuals who earn their titles (which indicate level of training) over a period of time wherein they undertake holistic and comprehensive lessons in anatomy, biomechanics and traditional Chinese medicine principals as well as community engagement.

Ojai goat farmer specializes in organic probiotic skin cream products

A

s a homesteader and goat farmer with a herd of eight, Erin Regan is the maker of Kefirology Cultured Beauty — a dense, creamy mask that she crafts by hand on her Ojai farm using raw, cultured goat’s milk.

“What many people don’t realize is that goat milk is the most consumed milk in the world,” Regan said. “It has more nutritional properties in comparison with cow milk — it’s higher in several vitamins and also minerals.”

These vitamins and minerals can be directly applied to the skin with her handmade product, Kefirology.

“It’s a kefir-based probiotic skin mask,” Regan explained.

Kefir, which means feeling good in Turkish, is also the name of a nickel-sized grain used to prolong the life of milk. These clusters of beneficial bacteria and yeast have a synergetic relationship as they fight to consume sugar — lactose — which naturally occurs in the milk.

“Kefir came from the Caucasus regions and the people that would make it didn’t have refrigeration, so they had to create something that would make their milk last more than two or three days,” Regan said. “So these grains were highly valued.”

Probiotics, found in foods such as yogurt, are live bacteria and yeasts.

“We’re comprised of more bacteria than we are cells in our body,” Regan said. “We are just a big ball of yeast and beneficial bacteria, so when you find things that are complementary or create more of those happy things that make our skin and our body happy, then it works in unison with our biology.”

Kefirology is considered unique for its natural properties that offer “a 3-in-1” product.

“You can put it over your makeup and the lactic acid will remove your makeup, so it’s a cleanser,” Regan said. “And it’s your moisturizer, too, because the fat in the milk basically moisturizes your skin way better than anything vegetable-based. And the lactic acid acts as a natural exfoliant.”

The milk used to make Kefirology comes from eight goats, Topaz, Ginger, Maple, Mimi, Felicity, Belle, Honey and Star. The girls are all fed organic grass that grows on Regan’s two-acre farm.

To create her facial mask, Regan allows the kefir grains to rest in the goat’s milk over a 24-hour period.

After the first fermentation, the result is a soupy version that looks like yogurt. The second fermentation produces a thicker, more condensed version of the first that’s packed with vitamins, minerals and probiotics.

“The result is a facial mask that does all kinds of great things for your skin,” said Regan.

Regan discovered her facial mask entirely by accident in the summer of 2016, when she was involved in the fermentation process of her goat’s milk.

“When you second-ferment things you put (the milk) in a locked-top bottle; and because it’s alive, it’s creating gases so you have to make sure that you burp those bottles or they can explode,” Regan said.

One night, she was all dressed up for a party when she went to check a bottle that had been fermenting for 24 hours.

“The bottle had created so much carbon dioxide, it exploded everywhere — all over the ceiling, all over the curtains, all over me, my hair and my face,” she remembered. “I was really upset it was going to get wasted, so I rubbed it all over my arms and my face. I cleaned up the rest of the mess and I went to rinse it off — and I was like, oh my God, my skin is so silky smooth – it was incredible.”

With that discovery, Regan gave the product to her friends and family.
