BACK TO THE GARDEN
A
nice, wet winter was just what Ventura County needed. A decent infusion for our water table. Enough moisture for vegetation to grow on charred hillsides. The scent of rain instead of smoke in the air. It feels like a fresh, clean start. My thanks to the atmospheric river. Winter’s chill is starting to lift, too, and with grass and flowers popping up all over, cabin fever is giving way to spring fever — which is why this season’s Home and Garden issue is a little heavier on the “garden” this time around. We just couldn’t help ourselves; the outdoors are calling. The beautiful landscape of Ojai’s east end has been the chief inspiration for Ross Anderson and Patricia Teague Anderson (Nesting). In creating their smart, modern, self-described “shack,” Ross, a renowned architect, followed his own credo: “Buy the biggest piece of property [you] can afford and build the smallest house [you] can.” The design is so intelligent that it feels much larger than its footprint . . . but the real emphasis is on its 1.25 acres. And there are so many ways to enjoy that land: a bocce ball court, a pool, an outdoor stone fireplace, a table long enough to seat 30 or more people and beautiful yet drought-resistant plants all around. Some of us look for ways to get back to the land. Horticulturalist Jo O’Connell (Cover Story) never really left it. The Sydney transplant has spent a lifetime tending to growing things, and she brought her love for plants

(and her country’s endemic flora) to California, opening up the gorgeous growing grounds of Australian Native Plants in Casitas Springs. Australia, like California, is plagued by frequent droughts and raging wildfires, and those acacias, banksia and mat-rushes have a way of weathering such difficult conditions — making them a great choice for local landscapes. It’s a good thing, too, because the Thomas Fire raged through her property. Nurturing her stricken plants back to health, she has wisdom to share about survival, re-emergence and being prepared. The call of the wild took us beyond our county borders as well, as we explored some of the most glorious botanical gardens found in Southern California (About Town). With vibrant blooms, sparkling fountains and artful accents all around, these are open-air Wonderlands for which many a garden lover would happily fall down a rabbit hole. But fear not — a short drive, a hat and some good walking shoes are all that are required. Southern California was lucky to get so much precipitation this year. No, it isn’t going to end the drought, but it is fueling a splendid spring . . . and now is the time to enjoy it. THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY, ART COLLECTIONS AND BOTANICAL GARDENS 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino 626.405.2100 or www.huntington.org This cultural institution near Pasadena has been a center for art, science and literature for 100 years. Established in 1919 by railroad magnate Henry Huntington and his wife, Arabella, the Huntington boasts a research institution, a collection of rare books and manuscripts, five art galleries and 120 acres of meticulously maintained botanical gardens. It has arguable become most famous for the latter. With 16 themed gardens, nearly every significant biome of the world is represented. The grounds include cycads, an Australian garden, a large and impressive desert garden and a shady sculpture garden with Greco-Roman replicas. But that’s just a small sampling of the lush Eden that awaits the visitor. Inside the greenhouse Conservatory, a spiral pathway leads through different levels of a tropical forest canopy, with a separate section for a carnivorous plant bog and numerous interactive exhibits. From there you’ll encounter the Children’s Garden, a wonderland of fountains, underground tunnels, fairy doors and more. Designed for the younger set, but enchanting for visitors of all ages. The tranquil Japanese Garden has meandering paths that traverse a landscape filled with groomed shrubs and trees, a serene koi pond, a ceremonial tea house, numerous bonsai and the Zen Court, with carefully raked gravel and rocks. Two gorgeous paths — a lower one along a picturesque rushing stream, or an upper one among the colorful camellias — lead from the Japanese to the Chinese Garden, or Liu Fang Yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance. This beautifully designed landscape is dominated by a large lake surrounded by bridges, limestone rocks imported from China’s Lake Tai and doorways designed to frame specific views. The Dumpling and Noodle House offers delicious Chinese and Tibetan cuisine with the most serene views at the Huntington. The Rose Garden features shrubs and trellises of roses which are at their most glorious in June. Nearby is the everfragrant herb garden. In between them sits the Rose Garden Tea Room, where a traditional English tea is offered daily. Reservations are highly recommended for this very popular pastime. There’s so much to enjoy at the Huntington: art galleries, the library, a jungle garden, the lily ponds and more. A solid 3-4 hours (plus time for lunch) is recommended. And definitely bring your walking shoes and some water, as there are over 100 acres to explore.

Paul Getty. But for those who love Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities, the Getty Villa, situated on the beautiful Malibu coast in Pacific Palisades, is where it’s at. The Getty Villa is a replica of the Villa dei Papiri, a luxurious Roman country home that was near the city of Herculaneum, buried by volcanic ash from Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Thus, the museum offers an excellent example of early Roman architecture and a taste of life in the first century. Its galleries house an impressive collection of pottery, statuary and other artifacts from ancient Greece and Rome. But the big draws are four wonderful gardens with Mediterranean plants, traditional fountains and pools and dozens of works of art. Within the galleries is the open-air Inner Peristyle, surrounded by a colonnade and featuring decorative marble floors, walls and ceilings. This courtyard holds replicas of artifacts found at both Papiri (the bronzes and fountains) and Pompeii (the ceiling, walls and Ionic columns). The shady square is lush with well-manicured foliage, Roman busts and marble fountains, and the central pool is lined with elegant statues of young women. The Herb Garden is designed in the traditional Roman style, and contains neat square plots of plants first-century households would have used for cooking and medicine: thyme, rosemary, lavender, sorrel, basil, etc. There are also vegetables and numerous fruit trees. In the center is a pool filled with koi and decorated with a waterspout featuring Silenus (a companion of Dionysus). Don’t miss the small but impressive East Garden. A cool, quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of the main sections of the museum, it features ample shade with benches for relaxation, sycamore and laurel trees, a circular fountain and another against the wall with a colorful and intricate tile mosaic. The largest and most stunning is the Outer Peristyle. Frescoes adorn the columned loggia on either side, which frame a garden of Mediterranean plants (bay laurel, boxwood, oleander and pomegranate) and statuary. The central focus is the long, narrow reflecting pool, decorated with sizable bronzes on either end. Refreshment can be found at the cafe, offering Mediterranean-inspired fare prepared with locally sourced ingredients, as well as a coffee cart with hot and cold drinks, snacks and ice cream. On the way out, take some time to shop the museum store, which has a wonderful mix of jewelry, books, glassware and more. Entrance to the museum is free, but a timed-entry ticket is required — and readily available via the website. Parking is $10-15 per car. The museum is closed on Tuesdays.

entura County hillsides have burst into landscapes of color, thanks to warmer temperatures and rays of sunshine. But there are other places to take in the glorious riches of the season. Just an hour (or so) away you’ll find botanical gardens which promise dense foliage, colorful flowers, sparkling fountains and other splendors (both natural and manmade) that will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired. LOTUSLAND Montecito 805.969.3767 www.lotusland.org Madame Ganna Walska, born Hanna Puacz in 1887, was a Polish opera singer who graced stages on both sides of the pond in the 1920s-30s. Her talent is a matter of some debate, but most agree that she was beautiful, intelligent and captivating, with a flair for the dramatic that made her both a style icon and a popular socialite. She married six times, traveled extensively, developed an interest in spirituality and horticulture, and came to California in 1941, purchasing an expansive estate in Montecito that would become both her home and her passion. Walska spent the next 40-plus years of her life creating the botanical wonderland that is Lotusland: 25 themed gardens on 37 acres, home to more than 3,000 plant species. She had a special love for succulents and cacti, but delights of all types can be found at Lotusland. Walska’s keen sense of fashion and style extended to landscape design, and throughout the grounds one finds diversity, color and whimsy. In the Aloe Garden, a pale blue pool has a perimeter of irridescent abalone shells and a cascading fountain made of enormous clam shells. A swimming pool in the fern garden was designed to resemble a sandy beach. Squat, peculiar antique

stone grotesques (brought over from Walska’s home in France) are arrayed in the Theatre Garden. The ground-dwelling clock in the Topiary Garden is designed with colorful low-lying succulents and decorated with copper signs of the Zodiac. Several gardens feature stones and glass in a variety of colors to coordinate with the plants. Truly, Walska considered every detail. The name “Lotusland” was derived from the Water Garden, filled with Asian lotus of various species and cultivars, with water lilies in the ponds around it. A peaceful pool in fall and winter, the Water Garden becomes a thing of beauty and majesty in spring and summer, when the flowers bloom in bright pink and white. The lotus bloom starts in late May and is a highlight of the season. In 2017, an extensive renovation was begun on the Japanese Garden, to make it accessible to all visitors and create a space of serenity and healing. The Japanese Garden will reopen in fall 2019. Up until the last years of her life, Walska was Lotusland’s head gardener. In her hands it became a place of beauty and wonder: captivating, intelligently designed, full of drama and spectacle. Much like the Madame herself. Access to Lotusland is by guided tour only, and reservations are required. Directions are provided upon tour confirmation. Tours take place at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 16-Nov. 15, and last about two hours; comfortable clothing and good walking shoes are recommended. v

EAST TO EDEN
Exploring the unspoiled gems of San José del Cabo. BY DAVID COMDEN
F
or nearly a century, tourists from around the world have visited the fishing village of Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of Baja California. Cabo, on the western side of the cape, has for some time been the star of the sun-and-surf show. But over the past few years, adventurers seeking a different experience have explored the east coast of San Lucas. The result has been the construction of chain resorts and condo developments dotting the beaches in the area known as “The Corridor,” where tourists stay on premises that differ little from Hawaii or Cancun. Meanwhile, another destination has emerged, that of San José del Cabo, both as a quaint town, harbor and gateway to somewhat still undeveloped territory to the east.
THE TOWN OF SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO Originally founded as a mission in 1730, San José del Cabo is the seat of the municipality and has a population similar to that of Ventura. What was not long ago a sleepy town has emerged into a seasonally thriving destination for food and art, with a recently expanded harbor and amenities to supply those who live further east along the coast. Cabo is known as a surfing destination, and the East Cape is known for its warm water, consistent waves and, occasionally, hurricane activity. Downtown San José is a collection of old commercial buildings and new retail shops and restaurants. Where once there was only typical Mexican cuisine, you can now find more upscale and diverse offerings. Catching onto the craze of locally produced beverages, a few breweries have come to life, notably Baja Brewing, a stone’s throw from the San José del Cabo Church in the civic center. Originally built along the river bordering the town, the mission and its church suffered through insurrection and weather, and were abandoned in the 18th century. The church was rebuilt in its present location in San José’s historic district in 1840. Like many settings in Latin America, the church grounds are a meeting place for residents to gather, worship and socialize.
LOCAL TASTES One of the more popular eateries sits next door to the brewery. La Lupita Taco & Mezcal is a restaurant with interesting food and an intimate patio, where musicians perform on an elevated stage above restaurant patrons. With a rough-lux feel of brick walls and black metal-framed windows, this eatery’s atmosphere reminds me of Gjusta or Scopa in Venice Beach. But it’s the food and style of presentation that make this a destination. The menu features exotic tacos made with lamb, pork, duck, steak, fish and octopus. For vegetarians, there are also mushroom, cactus and eggplant tacos. In addition, a wide selection of mescal, tequila’s smoky cousin, is served in traditional tasting cups. I was entertained by the chef who nimbly sliced the pastor pork cooking on a shawarma-styled spit, who then flicked various condiments into each taco he prepared with a long knife. After dining, take time to walk the city streets, where galleries and handcrafted folk art beckon. Or pop into one of several tequila tasting rooms for s sip. There are hundreds of types of tequilas, a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant in the western state of Jalisco, Mexico, each having its own unique flavor characteristics. But that’s a story for another time. }}

A DIFFERENT WAY TO HOTEL There are dozens of hotels and resorts between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, but further east you’ll find more intriguing options. Not far from San José is Puerto Los Cabos, a growing destination for pleasure boats, with over 220 slips, and where yachts can be seen departing for fishing trips and cruising the coast. S
crolling through architect Ross Anderson’s website and Instagram posts before meeting him in person at the “modern rustic” Ojai abode (that he hashtags #shack) he designed and built five years ago, I am impressed by a photo of a wood, steel and concrete building at Ravenswood Winery in Napa. To my eye, it’s Le Corbusier meets Frank Gehry, with a little sprinkle of Luis Barragán thrown in for good measure, yet it is completely original and seems very much from the imagination and heart of this very talented architect. I’m also attracted to a uniquely wonderful sleeping porch in a St. Helena vineyard house. Based on these two snapshots alone, I can’t wait to meet the marvelous Mr. Anderson and experience one of his projects in person: the home and gardens that he and his wife of five years, Patricia Teague Anderson (originally from }} Zimbabwe), share in Ojai’s bucolic east end.

Ross Anderson, FAIA, FAAR, is a native Californian born in San Francisco whose family moved around a lot. He attended and graduated from Ojai’s Thacher School, and from there studied art and architecture at Stanford followed by Harvard Graduate School of Design. Returning to California, he worked for renowned Bay Area architect William Turnbull, Jr. in San Francisco, among others, before deciding to move to New York City in 1979. Thirty years ago, he opened his own practice, Anderson Architects, in the Big Apple, and recently joined forces with a large Bay Area firm, MBH, to create a boutique design footprint in New York. “I had lots of artist friends in New York, which was the pull. It was cool, cheap and interesting. I taught for a while and worked in other offices. Apparently, I wanted to have my own studio,” he said over a cup of afternoon tea. Most of the design studio’s output has been with startup companies and established brands, like Levi-Strauss and Abercrombie & Fitch, creating work spaces and inventive retail spaces, as well as residential projects. Design projects spread from Ohio to Florida, Vermont and New York to California and around the globe. He’s designed the Fossil flagship store in London, O’Neill in Amsterdam, Cole Haan in Tokyo, Abercrombie & Fitch headquarters and even a soccer stadium at Princeton. A building published in DWELL was likened to a “Swiss Army knife” because it had components with multiple uses. “I love doing houses,” he admitted, so being his own client to create the Ojai home “created an opportunity to build a modest structure that responded to the local vernacular of shacks, sheds and barns, but still had its own relationship to the landscape and the outdoors, as well as aspirations of grandeur and modernity.” Those attributes, plus timely and valued input from his wife, shaped the outcome. The couple met while Ross was a “visiting scholar” at his alma mater, The Thacher School, where Patricia, whose two children from a previous marriage attended Thacher, was proctoring exams. “It’s a work in progress,” Ross told me as we walked the 1.25-acre property that feels much larger, thanks in part to one of his credos: “I always tell my clients to buy the biggest piece of property they can afford and build the smallest house they can. This is my reaction to the whole hideous McMansion thing. People who need 10-, 20-, 30-thousand square foot houses, it’s absurd. I’ve always liked the landscape to be dominant,” he maintains. The fantastic outdoor landscape is an entertaining dream that spreads out with a bocce ball court, outdoor stone fireplace, table long enough to seat 30 or more, lap pool and more. Native and drought-tolerant Australian plants add color and texture to the garden. In the architect’s work studio/guesthouse, more talent is revealed: handsome bronze sculptures cast at an Oxnard foundry are based on Chinese scholar stones that invite quiet contemplation. Perhaps the piece de resistance is the cozy bathhouse, a self-contained structure and sanctuary with a claw foot tub, wood-burning

fireplace, Eames chair and wall of books where I immediately spot a tome on the aforementioned Luis Barragán. Ross admires the work of Barragán, along with early Frank Gehry projects, Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and lesser-known Bay area architect William Wurster. He also has a penchant for contemporary art, with many pieces by New York artist friends such as Carroll Dunham, Mel Kendrick, Terry Winters, Gregory Rukavina and Laurie Simmons, among others, on display. His self-professed “furniture fetish” is shown through midcentury pieces, such as a dining table and chairs by Alvar Aalto, a George Nelson bookshelf system and wood coffee table by George Nakashima (considered the father of the America Craft movement). Nicely worn 1930s leather club chairs and a sofa you can sink into add to the comfort factor in an interior that is not in the least bit stuffy, but well considered. The color palette is heavy on gray, taupe, black and white with an occasional splash of color. Ross says the outdoors provides color to his tableaux. The highly insulated, solar-panel-powered 1,150 square foot house (electricity bills are $3 a month) is technically a “remodel” but basically brand new. The ceiling shapes the interior spaces with varying heights and angles; an interior fiberglass roof acts as a glowing skylight to the open kitchen/ dining area/living room functioning like a Japanese paper lantern. It all suits the Andersons’ passion for cooking and entertaining. Ross’s favorite part of the compound is the wide front porch — a perfect transitional space between the cozy indoors and the compelling landscape where Sunbrella shades are adjusted with nautical hardware to keep summer heat out or maintain warmth for winter dinner parties utilizing heat lamps. “I would call this an earnest structure, trying to appear to be a big house with a vast porch,” the architect explains. “It’s as if I took a bicycle pump to the original house and said, ‘Let’s try to let it be the big house it really wants to be without making it the big house.’ ” Patricia, a longtime private therapist in Ojai who recently launched the nonprofit group practice Acorn Counseling, provided her own lovely take on their nest: “This is such a livable house, it’s so well designed and intimate, but still has privacy. There’s a loft in my office that doubles as a guest bed. The porch becomes its own separate room or can turn into a tent that glows with candles at night for an outdoor dinner.” Incorporating a rich material palette, Ross notes, means it doesn’t have to all be about size. “Building is expensive,” Ross admits, “I believe in architecture with a small ‘a,’ not a big ‘A.’ I’ve always liked the power of a confident but humble building.” “The house looks low and simple from the front, but when you walk in, it opens up immediately into this spacious high-ceilinged interior. You can’t see any of this until you get inside,” Patricia concluded. “I still am delighted, and a bit puzzled by it, each time I come home.” v

GROWING A GREEN RESISTANCE Scorched by the Thomas Fire, Jo O’Connell of Australian Native Plants reflects on that which has emerged, the wonder of survival and the wisdom of fire-resilient design. BY EMILY DODI PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MOORE
J
o O’Connell, the owner of Australian Native Plants in Casitas Springs, points to a Banksia integrifolia on her property. It’s a lovely tree, with sunlight dancing on its leaves and a crop of those famous cone-shaped flowers, a favorite in floral arrangements. You’d never know that it had lived through hell. On December 5, 2017, the Thomas Fire tore through O’Connell’s property, destroying her home, a “lovely old barn” and many of the plants that O’Connell, a native of Sydney and an internationally known horticulturalist, has been cultivating and selling here since the early 1990s. The scorched banksia wears its scars like a badge of honor. The tree is just one of the resilient survivors, O’Connell herself included, in this little slice of heaven just off Highway 33. Today, the growing grounds of Australian Native Plants are lush and vibrant. With hummingbirds darting about and O’Connell’s Queensland blue heelers, Wallaby and Blue, underfoot, it might be easy to forget that the property endured the second most devastating wildfire in California history. But not O’Connell. She still sees evidence of Thomas’s }} destruction. SMOOTH MOVE: The smooth bark of the Brachychiton (kurrajong or bottletree) helps make it fire resistant: Embers can’t easily attach to the sleek surface. At O’Connell’s feet is playful Wallaby, one of two resident Queensland blue heelers. APRIL 2019

“We’re still cleaning up after the fire. Here it is, 15 months later, and we’re still identifying plants succumbing,” she says. “But some are coming back. I was surprised by what came back first and I was surprised by what didn’t come back when I thought it might.” O’Connell adds that some plants, like a few acacias, held on for almost a year before ultimately dying off. “I thought, ‘Oh, they’re coming back,’ but they didn’t,” she says with a sigh. There are many plants, however, that did make it through the ordeal. Some banksia, for example, are thriving beyond belief. “They flowered bigger flowers and profusely,” O’Connell says. “I’ve never seen that.” She assumes that the trees’s dramatic blossoming is due to the increased potash and other nutrients present in the soil after the fire. This year’s rainfall and lightning storms have been another boon. Lightning increases the level of nitrates, which act as a fertilizer, in the soil. Other plants that have made a comeback include a 90-year-old pineapple guava tree and the Lomandra, a type of grass sometimes called mat-rush, that grows around the guest house where O’Connell and her husband, Byron Cox, are living until they can rebuild their house. “Plants like these actually work in slowing down a fire,” she says, pointing to the plant with its long, blade-like leaves. “Anything will burn if it gets hot enough, but if you’ve got plants that can slow down fire and slow down embers . . .” That, in anyone’s estimation, would be a very good thing. For anyone looking to grow a fire-resistant garden, O’Connell has a few words of advice. “First and foremost,” she advises, “keep the garden around your house watered. If you’re going to use your water anywhere, use it in the plants around your house.” Planting things like Lomandra, with its thick plume of long, moist leaves, is also a wonderful idea. Any ember that drops in there, O’Connell says, pointing down into the plant, doesn’t stand much of a chance. During a recent talk O’Connell gave to a local horticultural society, she elaborated on the benefits of fire-retardant plants. Some examples: Fire-retardant plants can absorb more heat from an approaching fire without burning. They can trap embers and sparks and reduce wind speeds near a house. Fire-retardant ground cover can slow the advancement of a fire through its leaves. Smooth-barked trees will not burn as readily as stringy or roughbarked trees. Plants with a high moisture or salt content and/or a low oil content will take more to ignite and burn more slowly. O’Connell stresses that “maintenance makes a difference.” In addition to keeping plants irrigated, she advises pruning shrubs to “keep foliage fresh and green.” She suggests removing lower branches from trees and keeping tree limbs away from roofs and any other part of a structure. Removing dead or dry material from around plants before fire season is also key. }}

Some of her favorite fire-retardant plants, which she’s looking forward to planting in some of her clients’ gardens, include Lomandra, Grevillea (also known as spider flower), Hakea (aka needlewoods or pincushion), Pittosporum (cheesewood) and the beautiful Banksia. Fire safety is in the design, too. Some of O’Connell’s top tips include using inorganic mulches (i.e. gravel or decomposed granite) to slow the spread of fire. She advises planting fire resistant trees and well-watered hedges around a house to reduce radiant heat and to act as a shield against the spread of fire. On her own home, O’Connell will be installing sprinklers on the roof, a common practice in Australia — which, like California, is no stranger to raging wildfires. So, if the danger of a wildfire presents itself again, water from the sprinklers will rain down on the roof and over the sides of the house to form a watery line of defense. Other fire prevention measures she’ll put in place are a large open space around the house and the use of fire-retardant ground cover. Perhaps one of the greatest lessons from the fire is how enormously resilient and hardy Australian native plants are. “They don’t get bothered a lot by pests or disease,” O’Connell says. That’s not to say that they don’t require care. The plant that requires no upkeep or work doesn’t exist, she explains. Indeed, O’Connell gives her plants a lot of love and time. She’s up at 6 a.m. every day and she’s basically a onewoman band running the growing grounds. She barely has a spare moment, but she does takes the time to talk to her plants and fuss over them. That’s a must. There’s also the occasional belly rub for Wallaby and Blue. With the sun going down over the hills, another busy day is drawing to a close. It’s been a good one, though. The smell of rain is still fresh in the air. But fire season will come again and we can prepare as best we can. Looking around, one is inspired to follow O’Connell’s lead.
