EDITOR’S NOTE

PERSONAL TOUCH

I

n a modern world where it feels like innovation moves at the speed of light, there’s a growing nostalgia for “the old way.” Vintage fashion, classic cocktails, turn-of-the-century beards and mustaches and rustic designs that call back to pre-Industrial times are everywhere. And in a comical juxtaposition, anyone can share their old-fashioned inspiration at the touch of a smartphone, posting imagery from another era to Pinterest, Snapchat and Instagram. All jests aside, there is something undeniably appealing about items made by hand. No two handcrafted objects are exactly alike, and there’s beauty in their imperfections, too. I think that the essence of the maker — a living, breathing human being — is imparted as well. When so much of our lives are dominated by virtual reality, it’s no wonder that we crave something tangible, where we can see and feel the creator’s mark. All of the people featured in this week’s Style issue are masters of their crafts, who bring a distinctly hands-on approach to what they do. Janna Sheehan, the focus of our cover story, has created perfumes that are, essentially, Ojai in a bottle. Her Ojai Wild collection is made from botanicals harvested herself from her Meiners Oaks farm, which she distills using a centuries-old method of extraction. Her fragrances are anything but old-fashioned, however: They appeal to a luxury clientele, as evidenced by her relationships with fashion designer Johnny Was and

such fine retailers as C.O. Bigelow. Peruvian-born Hugo Ormachea isn’t merely a jeweler, but an artist whose muse resides deep in the earth, where the gems and ores of his trade are formed. All pieces are made by hand, using hammer and anvil, crucibles, torches and custom molds – not a single tool requiring electricity. And yet these age-old techniques tell a modern story, where contemporary designs are rendered with an organic elegance. It’s no mean feat to sew sequins, beads, feathers and crystals individually onto delicate fabric. But her skill at such embellishment is one of the secrets to Patricia Samaniego’s success as a haute couture designer, whose glittering gowns go down the aisle or red carpet with panache. Makeup artist Niki Metz is no stranger to the red carpet, either, having spent decades in the world of high fashion, where celebrities and runway models depend on her to make them into images of beauty and style. Modern technology has given us many wonderful things, but sometimes, the human touch is what’s called for. A discriminating eye, a practiced hand, skill gained by knowledge and experience and a vision that springs from the mind of an artist, not an algorithm. These qualities can’t be duplicated by a machine, and thus will never be obsolete — even if the methods by which they are achieved spring from a time that has long since passed. – Nancy D. Ormachea Jewelry merges master craftsmanship, Old World techniques and modern artistry. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PHOTOS BY MICHAEL MOORE

O

ne glance in the window at Ormachea Jewelry in downtown Ventura and you’ll know immediately: This is not the typical jewelry store. Where one might expect to see twinkling diamonds and the soft sheen of silver and gold, Ormachea offers color, art and originality: atypical stones, a mix of metals, designs that are unusual yet perfectly in harmony. Rather than referencing stars in the sky or an idealized version of heaven, Ormachea speaks of the earth — the very foundations from which its gems and minerals emerge, to be turned into precious }} works of wearable art.

TOP: Bertha and Hugo Ormachea inspect turquoise stones for future jewelry designs at their shop in Downtown Ventura. Hugo’s exceptional skill and Bertha’s eye for fashion have kept Ormachea a leader in the jewelry business for over two decades. ABOVE: Ormachea Jewelry evinces an elegant yet organic quality, with atypical stones and mixed metals.

It takes an expert touch to imbue these raw materials with grace and elegance while maintaining their organic essence. And that achievement is due to the mind and skill of master craftsman Hugo Ormachea. Gold runs through the veins of the Ormachea family — Hugo’s father, Donato, is a jeweler in Cuzco, Peru, as was his father before him. Even so, Hugo himself didn’t pick up the loupe immediately. He studied architecture at the University of San Antonio. He was, however, quickly disillusioned. “Being an architect [in Peru] is not like here,” Hugo says. “Over there, all you can get is some bureaucratic project.” An artist at heart, Hugo craved something that would allow his own imagination to take flight. So he returned to the family business. It was a less jarring transition than one might expect. “When you think jeweler, architect, painter, carpenter — all these professions are basically the same thing. The object is to put everything together in harmony and balance. Making jewelry is better because you don’t have to deal with a contractor from zero to sell point. You are in control.” For Hugo, jewelry making is a medium for his vision, and maintaining mastery over the process is paramount. Hugo’s partner in business and life is his wife, Bertha. Not a jeweler herself, she has an innate sense of style and a nose for trends that have kept Ormachea both on point and a touch ahead of the curve. “Ever since I was a child I loved to be creative,” she says. “First I was designing clothes. When I was in university, I wanted to study architecture. I loved knitting and weaving, and took classes in ceramics.” Bertha had some design ideas for jewelry that she hoped she could sell through her sister, who worked in the tourism field. She needed a jeweler to bring them to life . . . which is how she met Hugo. Several years, two shops, one transnational move and three children (sons Sergio, Gabriel and Rodrigo) later, they are still together . . . and still a formidable team. Hugo and Bertha initially opened a shop in Cuzco, which proved to be very successful. “We were touching the sky,” Hugo admits. “So we said, now what?” With conflict between the government and terrorist organizations putting a chill on tourism in the Peruvian Andes, and Bertha’s sister already living in California, in 1991 the Ormacheas decided to head north with their three young sons and set up shop in Ventura. The Ormachea aesthetic didn’t wow the American customer . . . at first. But with Bertha’s eye for fashion and some clever reimagining of the designs (namely, introducing mixed metals and less expensive options) the jewelry store flourished. Bertha recalls suggesting to Hugo, “Let’s do something casual.” Ormachea began to offer options in silver and brass mixed with stones. “We did wholesale with that line. After that, everything came easily. We started updating the design, working with what was the trend and what working women wanted.”

Alix Camp, a jeweler from Hawaii who has been apprenticing at Ormachea the last few years, notes that Bertha has an almost uncanny ability to pick up on what customers want . . . and what the next hot thing will be. “She interacts with the customer. And she’s in touch with the fashions. She has an idea of what’s the trend . . . and then thinks of the trend with a twist.” From Bertha’s perspective, there’s nothing magic about it — it’s all about listening to the client. “I try to understand each person,” she says. “What’s her style, what’s her personality. I drive them to find the piece they’re going to love. . . . Everything starts with a nice, personal conversation.”

And she helps translate their needs to Hugo, who, like any true artiste, can be stubborn. But somewhere between the customer’s idea and Hugo’s vision is a design that perfectly encapsulates both the wearer’s personality and the Ormachea commitment to artistry, balance and style. When making his jewelry, Hugo’s jumping-off point is always the same. “I start first with the stone,” he explains. He goes to gem and mineral shows and looks for whatever catches his eye. Diamonds, rubies and sapphires might }}

FORGING AHEAD: At Hugo’s home studio, you’ll find hammers and an anvil, crucibles for molten gold, molds he created himself and sketchbooks for design – ancient tools of the metallurgy trade. “To make one-of-a-kind jewelry, you don’t need machinery,” he insists. “If the power goes out, I can still do my work.”

play a role in his work, but these staples of the jewelry trade rarely take the lead. Moonstone, labradorite, opals, coral and turquoise figure largely in his designs, and it’s not uncommon for metal to take center stage. “Here, we make the metal a principal part,” Hugo says. “When you see my pieces, you don’t think, ‘I like your diamond.’ You say, ‘I like the ring.’ It’s all about the whole.” Hugo works with all metals, but prefers gold (18 carat in particular) above all else. “The best metal is yellow gold. Always I work with it. The beauty is really nice. It’s nice to fire and to hammer. It’s nice to work with, in all the stages.” Camp was immediately drawn to Ormachea’s one-of-a-kind pieces, noting that Hugo “likes to mix raw stuff with polished. I love that it has that organic feel to it. It has that artistic approach. It’s really different. And each piece is handmade; there’s no casting.” Hugo will sometimes use silver wire, but purchases only raw gold for his creations. He makes many of his own tools and molds, and melts his metals in a crucible with a gas or propane torch. While he does use a hand-cranked rolling mill to get wire of very precise and consistent dimensions, he forms sheets using a hammer and anvil — like a modern-day Hephaestus. “To make one-of-a-kind jewelry, you don’t need machinery,” Hugo insists. “If the power goes out, I can still do my work.” It’s not unlike how his own father worked. Ormachea’s technique and designs are heavily influenced by Hugo’s Peruvian roots. “When you’re born someplace like that, you unconsciously use it,” he says of Cuzco, which was once the capital of the Inca Empire. A ring based on Machu Picchu, Incan design elements, stylized representations of the sun and the moon (extremely important in Incan culture) all find their way into Ormachea jewelry. But Hugo is quick to add that other aesthetics, both old and new, inform his work. Etruscan and Asian elements are not uncommon, and the contemporary world is a constant source of inspiration. He and Bertha travel as often as they can, and being true art lovers, enjoy museums, galleries and architecture. Exposure to the wider world helps keep Ormachea’s jewelry fresh and interesting. “That’s how you grow,” Hugo says. “To see and be open to improving your vision for other things. Sometimes you don’t realize you are changing, because you are absorbing everything. . . . You need to be open to everything.” It’s this quality that keeps jewelry lovers coming to the shop, year after year and, in some cases, generation after generation. Hugo and Bertha have made engagement rings for couples who come in later for other pieces — and whose children end up coming in when they, too, are looking for something special. “They know what they want,” Hugo says. “They like something unique. So they need my jewelry. It’s not only jewelry; it’s a complement for your body.” Ormachea has served all types of customers: the newly engaged (including same-sex couples), people looking to update old or inherited jewelry with a more modern design, those wanting to pass on something special to their heirs. Bertha recalls one man, dying of cancer, who ordered bracelets for his wife, son and daughter, each with a special engraving. “The personal design we do becomes kind of emotional,” she says. “For us, it is a passion,” Hugo adds. “It’s not just a business. We make art. People like it, yes, but first we make for ourselves.” v

GOLD STAR: The son and grandson of jewelers, Peruvian-born Hugo practically has gold running through his veins. Perhaps that’s the reason he prefers the lustrous metal over any other. “It’s nice to fire and to hammer. It’s nice to work with, in all the stages,” he says.

PROFILE HELLO, GORGEOUS: A wizard with a cosmetic brush and a master with a microblade, Niki Metz brings her years of experience in the world of high fashion to help women in Ventura County and beyond put their best face forward.

California in 2001. As the face of the brand, Metz ended up traveling to NYC, where she cut her teeth doing makeup for NARS at its fast-paced fashion shows. From there Metz went on to become the international makeup director for DvF Beauty (part of the Diane von Furstenberg brand), as well as executive director of artistry and education for Jouer Cosmetics. She contributed to countless fashion magazines, among them Allure, Women’s Wear Daily, Interview and Shape. She also did the makeup for numerous fashion shows, including Diane von Furstenberg, Stephen Burrows and Chris Aire. Metz played a key role in companies such as Jenny Kane, David Cardona, Thakoon, Trina Turk, John Varvatos, and Kate O’Connor. In 2004, Metz returned to California, hoping to work closer to home. “It was a time when reality shows were becoming popular, and people could care less that I had come from a high-fashion world, doing makeup for the likes of Naomi Campbell, etc. So I actually had to start all over again. I began working for Extreme Makeover, the reality show, as one of their makeup artists, while I built up my clientele from scratch.” These days, Metz takes care of her clients’ makeup needs for movie premieres and award shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes, and continues to do makeup for fashion shoots. More recently, she turned her artistry toward learning a new skill, microblading, a form of semi-permanent makeup that enhances the eyebrow using fine deposits of cosmetic pigments. }}

elebrity makeup artist Niki Metz’s return to her hometown of Ventura is raising more than a few eyebrows, now that she’s added microblading to her many accomplishments. Famous for her Metz Glow Now, for 20 years Metz has traveled the world as a makeup artist to her highprofile clientele. She’s known for bringing a fresh, original approach to creating beautiful faces. Ventura-born and -raised, Metz’s parents own Stephen’s Market and Grill, and her husband is a Ventura police officer. Metz laughs, “We like to keep everything in Ventura County!” While she still travels, maintaining her career as a makeup artist, recently Metz set up shop for microblading appointments at Y2 Nail Bar and Beauty Lounge in Camarillo. “I like the fact that Ventura County is so humble and laid-back but people still want to look nice. There are plenty of people here who are passionate about self-care.” Metz’s success story has humble beginnings. “In the late ’80s,” Metz recalls, “when I was 19, I got a job at Nordstrom in Santa Barbara.” She worked for Stila Cosmetics, which at the time was a very small brand. “The makeup and beauty world was not saturated as it is today. We had no social media and it was definitely a simpler time.” With a tip from her older sister, Metz went on to work for an unknown label that was slated to be a big hit. She became its very first national makeup artist for

“Microblading literally takes 10 years off a face, and since I have been an artist for so long, it seemed a natural fit,” Metz shares.“I use a microblade, which looks like a mini X-Acto knife. I dip it into a non-toxic, waterbased ink. Then I make the lines that look like natural hairs with a little scratch.” Nicki’s expertise and facial knowledge, gleaned from 20 years of working as a makeup artist, are what set her apart from other microbladers. Metz makes each client’s eyebrows to measure. “I don’t give everyone the exact same brow. To me it’s important to use proper mapping techniques to create perfect, natural brows. I make them look fluffier — it’s shaping the brow that’s so important. The artistic eye is crucial. You need to know how the hairs grow on the face and what is appealing to the eye.” Metz is certain she puts personality into each set of brows she does, and her clients, who come from far and wide, are convinced of it. Microblading typically costs $500, which includes a touch-up within six weeks. v For more information on Niki Metz, call 714.425.2688 or visit www.nikimetz.com. My go-to brow product Glossier Boy Brow in Clear. “It’s like a pomade for your brows to keep them soft and fluffy looking.” What I have in my makeup bag Jouer Cosmetics Luminizing Moisture Tint in Golden. “This is my go-to tinted moisturizer. I love that it is hydrating and does not move around on my face throughout the day.” Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit in Medium to Tan. “I cannot live without this kit. I use it for my eyeshadow too!” Blistex Medicated Lip Balm, SPF 15. “I have one in my purse, car, makeup bag, and nightstand! I love that it glides on effortlessly without feeling sticky or thick.” HIGH EYE-Q: Metz’s expertise and facial knowledge, gleaned from 20 years in the beauty biz, give her an edge in microblading – and every eyebrow is made to measure. “To me it’s important to use proper mapping techniques to create perfect, natural brows,” she says. SHOP TALK Patricia Samaniego works on a sequined gown with hand-sewn ostrich feathers in her Newbury Park studio. Her bell-sleeve cocktail dress is also of her own design, and features a landscape of sparkling stones sewn by hand onto the fabric.

SLOW FASHION An interview with haute couture designer Patricia Samaniego. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOS BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN

P

atricia Samaniego is a haute couture designer specializing in custom evening and bridal wear. She’s currently creating her first made-to-order collection, working from her home-based studio in Newbury Park, where she personally designs and creates each individual piece. She also mentors aspiring designers in her Haute Fashion Studio. When did you first know you wanted to be a fashion designer? I started sewing as a young child. By the time I was in middle school, I definitely knew I wanted to pursue a career in fashion. As a preteen, I collected fashion catalogs that arrived in the mail and I would spend hours sketching in my bedroom. As an introverted child, this was a great way to tap into my creative side that developed into a passion. I started my fashion career making costumes in the wardrobe department on the Las Vegas strip. After that, I worked with a couture designer in London making dresses

for the British royal family. My experience in London inspired me to pursue a career in designing and fabricating custom and made-to-order couture gowns. Who were your early influences and fashion heroes? Hollywood actresses from the Golden Era of cinema such as Carole Lombard and Marlene Dietrich, who were the epitome of Hollywood glamour, inspired me. Costume designers Adrian and Edith Head dominated the film industry and knew how to bring glamour to the big screen, while ensuring the costumes were relevant to the story. I had a roommate in design school (the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City) that was a Turner Classic Movies fanatic! She’d always have the TV on in the background and that was my introduction to black-and-white, classic films. I was also influenced by Princess Diana’s beauty and style. I loved watching her fashion style evolve over the years. I’m now seeing the same elegance and class with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

ALL THAT GLITTERS: Samaniego has a special love for feathers, sequins, beads and crystals – anything that adds a little sparkle to her one-of-a-kind gowns. “I have a deep appreciation for hand applications, embroidery work and intricate beading,” she says. “It’s a level of work that requires patience and skill.”

Who do you admire and follow now? Throughout my teens and early years as a young designer, I admired fashion designers such as Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix and James Galanos for their glamorous and feminine designs. I also admire Bob Mackie’s work. I used to watch The Carol Burnett Show as a kid and couldn’t wait to see the costumes. One of my favorites was the curtain dress from Burnett’s Gone With the Wind

parody, “Went With the Wind.” A broke Starlet O’Hara (Burnett) tears the curtains off Tara’s windows to create a dress, but instead of emerging in the film’s iconic green velvet grown, she descends the stairs wearing the curtains intact — complete with a curtain rod thrown over her shoulders. It’s such a funny and iconic scene! Designers I currently admire and follow are Ellie Saab, Zuhair Murad and Ralph & Russo. The luxurious fabrics they use and couture details are breathtaking. Why one-of-a-kind couture and what makes couture different? Creating one-of-kind pieces gives me the creative freedom to cater to a client’s specific needs. Couture is different than ready-to-wear because it’s 100 percent customized. We go over every detail, making changes if necessary. I get to experiment and have fun with my clients. You can’t get that level of service when buying off the rack. Couture pieces do take more time to make, but quality is worth the wait. There’s something about slow fashion that makes it extra-special and valuable to the wearer. How long you have been designing? I have been designing for over 15 years in my studio and keeping up with the fast-paced fashion world, with hiatuses due to family responsibilities and life just happening. My expertise is in couture eveningwear. I’m currently designing a made-toorder collection that has been a labor of love. Some of the pieces have intricate work such as feathers, sequins and crystals. One of my gowns from the collection was seen on the red carpet at the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival. Who is your typical customer? My typical customer can range from a bride to a woman who will be walking the red carpet, attending a gala or going to a white- or black-tie event. Who is your favorite customer? My favorite customer is a woman who surrenders control and allows me to design something beautiful and personalized for her. The materials and fabrics you use are lush — net, sequins, pearls, etc. I have always had a fascination with fabrics and trims that sparkle. I have a deep appreciation for hand applications, embroidery work and intricate beading. It’s a level of work that requires patience and skill. A couture client appreciates this type of work because it’s what makes a garment unique and personalized for her. If budget were no object, what would your dream/fantasy dress be? I would love to partner with Swarovski and

create a one-of-a-kind red carpet gown dripping in crystals for an “A list” Hollywood celebrity. Dream client? If I had one wish to pick anyone in the world to dress it would be Catherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. I’d love to dress her someday, if she’d ever consider wearing an American designer. Now that Prince Harry is engaged to Meghan Markle, I’ll be carefully watching Meghan’s style transformation. I’d really like to see her support American designers. Describe your “typical” day — if you have one! My day-to-day routine changes depending on what I’m working on. Sometimes I can spend hours embellishing a gown or working on patterns for a new dress. I could be attending textile shows or going to L.A.’s Fashion District. When I’m not working in my studio, you’ll find me juggling motherhood and teaching aspiring designers. Tell me about Haute Fashion Studio and your lessons for aspiring designers. I started Haute Fashion Studio after discovering that many aspiring fashion designers with a secret passion were afraid to switch careers. They needed guidance in getting started and I’d been in their shoes as a young designer. I didn’t have the support or the know-how when I began my career. I didn’t have opportunities handed to me, or the connections to navigate the design world, and made many mistakes along the way. Haute Fashion Studio offers a helping hand and encouragement to aspiring designers so they can move forward with their design dreams! Some clients have left a steady paycheck and need a creative outlet. I work with clients one on one, providing tons of encouragement and information that’s often glossed over in design schools. I’ve had some talented and interesting clients, including a rock star’s wife and the daughter of a Hollywood music composer. Many of my students have been accepted into some of the most challenging design schools around the world, including Central Saint Martins in London and Parsons School of Design in New York. It’s pretty amazing to see how these students start with a dream, to then seeing them create their own opportunities utilizing their design skills. v PATRICIA SAMANIEGO: Couture Evening Wear www.patriciasamaniego.com HAUTE FASHION STUDIO: Fashion Design & Sewing Education for Aspiring Designers www.hautefashionstudio.com

STYLE Artisanal perfumer Janna Sheehan creates olfactory elegance with Ojai Wild. BY EMILY DODI | PHOTOS BY JONATHAN CHU

“THEY’RE A REAL CHI CHANGER.” Janna Sheehan is speaking about the power of the fragrances she creates. The local artisan perfumer is the creator of Ojai Wild, “fresh, pure extract of botanicals, resins and woods sourced by hand in California.” “They’re not meant to overpower a room,” says Sheehan. “They’re a fleeting experience. Like a moment of beauty.” And yet they’re powerful. Working in her studio in Ventura County, Sheehan uses a 17th-century tincture method of extraction to produce the essential oils she uses in her fragrances. “Plants are ethically harvested or grown on our farm in the Ojai Valley,” explains Sheehan. “[Then they are] crushed, pressed and soaked, releasing the unadulterated and undiluted bloom.” What is left is the true essence of the plant, includ}}

ing the plant’s healing benefits and mood-altering effects. Hence the term “chi changer,” coined by one of Sheehan’s friends. While other distilling methods result in large molecules that sit on the skin, the tincture method Sheehan uses results in smaller molecules that are more readily absorbed into the skin. Sheehan explains that her fragrances are designed to be sprayed throughout the day, whenever a breath of calm or a fresh lift is desired. “My fragrances have a high vibration,” says Sheehan. “They are joyful and have a light, fresh quality.” Formally trained as a painter and printmaker, Sheehan developed her love of creating fragrances after meeting Tricia Peterson, a perfumer and aromatherapy expert who became Sheehan’s teacher and mentor. The transition from painter to perfumer was a natural one. “Fragrance became my art medium,” Sheehan explains, adding that both pursuits are about “creating something beautiful.” “Simply put, creating beauty is one of my basic instincts, and my relationship with scent and perfume is primal,” Sheehan says on the Johnny Was blog. “Somewhere in the texture of those qualities and my love of embracing any emotion as a source of healing is the seed of my creativity.” After two years of studying and developing fragrances, Sheehan released her first collection called Trance Essence. These scents feature intoxicating blends of elements like fig, rose, lavender, musk, amber and vanilla. The collection, which includes such fragrances as Whyte Rabbit, Pink Kat, Genie in a Bottle and Hail Merri, are available through C.O. Bigelow. An opportunity to create another line of fragrances came several years later. Lisa Casoni, co-owner and co-curator of Porch Gallery in Ojai, approached Sheehan about developing fragrances in collaboration with an exhibit that would capture the essence of the Ojai Valley. Sheehan rose to the challenge to channel the spirit of a place she adores. “Ojai holds the essence for inspiration,” muses Sheehan. The result is Ojai Wild, a collection of fragrances that are, essentially, Ojai in a bottle. Notes include white sage, juniper berry, peppercorn, jasmine and citrus. When it came to creating the packaging of Ojai Wild, Sheehan knew it would have to be a work of art, too. The overcaps are made of reclaimed wood, handcrafted and finished by Brooklyn designers Rob Bezrutczyk and Cole Bennett. The exterior art, designed by Ojai local Dustin Byerley, features “God’s eyes,” “a universal symbol of mystery,” which Sheehan explains “alludes to fragrance notes through color and gradation.” Collaboration, whether it’s with fellow artisans or with clients, is very important to Sheehan. When asked to create a signature fragrance for Johnny Was, the California-based clothing brand, Sheehan looked to sweet vanilla, patchouli, musk, jasmine and orange blossom to capture the “dreamy and bohemian essence” of the laid-back Johnny Was lifestyle. The fragrance Talia was born and is now available as a fragrance oil and in candle form. Sheehan collaborates with private clients as well. “It’s }}

a very intimate process,” she explains. Conversations over tea will naturally turn to favorite fragrances, emotions, sensitivities and memories. One client reminisced about summers spent sailing on the ocean. Sheehan created a fragrance filled with summer blossoms that transported the client back to those idyllic times. Creating a signature fragrance is even trickier than capturing lightning in a bottle. It’s capturing a memory. And yet, Sheehan does it time and again. Perhaps it all stems from Sheehan’s ability to find the heart and the truth of the matter — whether it’s a beloved botanical or a person — and coax it into the light. Now many of the botanicals Sheehan uses are grown on her very own farm nestled in the Meiners Oaks area of the Ojai Valley. She works with farmer Shawn Fulbright to grow organic yarrow, chamomile, marshmallow, lemongrass, white sage, roses and more. As business evolves and grows, the farm is a reminder that nature and harmony will always be at the root of Ojai Wild. As Sheehan has said, “This line is not meant to be mass produced.” Even so, the world is taking notice. Ojai Wild won best fragrance and best packaging at the 2017 Indie Beauty Expo. No matter how many people discover Ojai Wild, each fragrance is different on every person. As Sheehan says, “fragrance must be worn.” Each fragrance comes alive in a different way for each person who wears it. The true nature of the botanicals meets the true nature of the person. Life force meets life force. Moments are captured. Chi is changed. Love is found. Fragrance may be fleeting, but that is not. v Find Ojai Wild at deKor & Co., 105 S. Montgomery St., Ojai. For more information or to order online, visit ojaiwild.com. Talia is available through www.johnnywas.com.

NATURAL CHEMISTRY: Sheehan captures Ojai in a bottle through notes of juniper berry (top), white sage, peppercorn, jasmine, citrus and other elements that are readily found in the Ojai Valley.
