The ballet barre adds a new dimension to fitness

ove over, CrossFit! There’s a new game in town, and it takes its cues from ballet, not bodybuilding. If you’ve ever dreamed of having the long, slender lines and toned muscles of a dancer (and who hasn’t?), then barre fitness just might be for you. Using a ballet barre for stability, it emphasizes core strength and isometric movements, putting lots of major and minor muscle groups to work to provide a total-body workout that

improves muscle conditioning and posture.

Several studios offer barre fitness classes, and many have their own take on it.

Cardio Barre, a franchise with locations in Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks, puts a calorie-burning spin on the technique. “It is a core workout,” explains Melissa Collins, owner of the Simi Valley facility, “but it’s a low-impact, high-energy cardio workout.” Studio Barre offers more of a traditional barre workout. Park locations, says, “It’s about building core strength and improving posture.

The focus is sculpting and toning, not so much the intense calorie burn.” In barre fitness, it’s the little things that count — as in little muscles. “Spinning and running and exercises like that don’t work the tiny muscles that suck everything in and really tone and tighten your body,” explains Studio Barre — Newbury Park owner Cindi Garabedian. “We use very small isometric movements to really get into the core.”

The low-impact nature of even the most rigorous barre fitness routine is one of the secrets to its success. “Cardio Barre is a great way to work out without injuring yourself,” Collins says. “It’s great for pregnancy, really easy on your joints, and suitable for people of all ages and injuries.” Garabedian agrees, adding, “The coolest part is that it’s so easily modified. No matter who you are or your fitness background, you can get a great workout for your ability.”

The other reason more people are taking the barre? “It works,” Collins states simply. “It sculpts a beautiful dancer’s body.” Bemorest finds that her students are impressed by how quickly they see results. “It’s easy to see improvement. The workout itself is very gaugeable.”

You don’t necessarily have to join a barre-focused studio to explore barre fitness. Maverick’s and VFit have started adding barre classes, and other gyms are likely to follow suit. Judging from the trend’s popularity, the barre isn’t going anywhere … and it’s not just for ballerinas anymore. fhb

ust when we thought we had reached maximum healthiness, we ring in another New Year and whatever we thought we knew is now in the rearview . . .. Well, maybe not everything.

From food to ergonomics to high-tech health help, we are seeing an evolution in the world of well-being while, at the same time, certain standards are longstanding. In our search for health trends, we looked at what happened in 2014 and what the experts say is to come in 2015 to improve our overall quality of life.

Here is what we found: THE NEW SUPERFOODS Ever since the term superfoods became common in the American vernacular, there has seemed to be a real emphasis on produce that was dark and rich in color and known for antioxidants,

such as raspberries, blueberries, etc., and food that was rich in omega-3 fatty acids, mainly salt-water fish, such as salmon and sardines. While those remain key ingredients to a well-rounded diet, one can only eat so many berries and fish. Luckily, those seeking to diversify flavors and textures may hit the jackpot this year as new superfoods are discovered and introduced to U.S. markets. This year, look for: • Gluten-free, vegan, rich in amino acids, wholegrain options: amaranth, teff and kañiwa • Digestive aids: Fermented foods • High in antioxidants: dark chocolate, black rice • High in vitamin C, body detox, low-carb alternative: cauliflower (said to be more popular than kale) • High in anti-cancer compounds: Brussels sprouts
