A Family Committed to Wellness
CORY’S STORY…
Cory Ardizzone entered the world of hyperbarics decades ago when a client he worked for began utilizing hyperbaric oxygen therapy alongside other treatment methods for their autistic child. Watching that child, who went from wearing a helmet and suffering multiple seizures a day, to now years later, graduate college, hold multiple jobs, and really thrive in life, inspired Cory to learn more.
A few years later, while working as a bodyguard within the entertainment industry, Cory had the opportunity to meet the owner of OxyHealth (a leading company in the hyperbaric field) who provided a soft hyperbaric chamber to the musical group that he was on tour with. While touring, he witnessed the benefits the band members experienced with continual hyperbaric dive sessions which just reinforced Cory’s belief in the power of hyperbaric therapy.
In 2017, a bad car accident resulted in Cory suffering a traumatic brain injury and undergoing 19 different spinal cord procedures. His pain continued, and his aversion to painkillers led him to rely solely on hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The use of hyperbarics was helping but not to the extent that he would have liked. Cory saw a specialist who did a brain scan and he realized he needed deeper pressure while diving. As he increased the pressure in his dives, he noticed his pain began to subside.
Cory and his wife Janelle both eventually secured jobs with OxyHealth, with Cory installing the chambers and Janelle working on the sales side. And it wasn’t too long after that, they decided to open Desert Moon Hyperbarics and Wellness. They opened with just one hyperbaric chamber, and eventually added additional chambers along with a wealth of other modalities. Cory stayed on board with OxyHealth, continuing installs for some time while Janelle jumped head first into Desert Moon.
Upon opening, as they were beginning their wellness journey, both Cory and Janelle had their bloodwork done and as they anticipated, everything looked good. Just a few months later, he noticed his fingertips were turning black. He immediately redid his labwork, which returned extremely bad results. The doctors gave diagnoses like Lyme disease and autoimmune dysfunction - Cory was at a loss. The blackening of his fingers was getting worse, he was swollen from head to toe and he was in excruciating pain. Lower pressure hyperbarics was not offering any relief and with his wife’s urging, Cory went to the emergency room. Without conducting even one test, the ER doctors immediately suggested an

amputation of some fingers which Cory quickly pumped the brakes on. He then spent the next seven days in the hospital while every test imaginable was conducted. The doctors were at a loss as everything came back fine. Finally, an infectious disease doctor informed Cory that he may have ANCA-associated Vasculitis, a terminal vasculitis that comes with full organ failure typically within months along with GPA, which comes with full renal failure, also within months. Again, they redid the labwork and everything looked fine. Cory left the hospital without answers but with the intention of returning home and diving deep into hyperbaric therapy with hopes of healing. A doctor out of New York recommended three onehour dives per day at a very high atmospheric pressure. After 30 days on the protocol, all of his fingers had returned to their normal color, and the inflammation and pain were gone.
Today, Cory works alongside his wife Janelle full-time at Desert Moon. They, along with their amazing kids, run the day-to-day operations and are dedicated to educating people about the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
THE FUTURE OF DESERT MOON WITH JANELLE…
In 2022, Desert Moon Hyperbarics and Wellness opened with just three modalities: hyperbaric oxygen therapy, red light therapy and Brain Tap. While Janelle and the team love introducing the community to the world of biohacking, she says their ultimate goal is to provide precision biohacking by bridging the gap between western medicine and the various biohacking modalities. Their recent partnership with Dr. Manoj Sharma of Elite Medical Associates is allowing Desert Moon to build out their medical side while continually adding new biohacking elements. This allows them to offer complete medical care including in-depth comprehensive bloodwork, functional medicine, athletic recovery, surgical recovery, longevity medicine, and more.
Currently, when new clients visit Desert Moon, they begin with a hyperbaric consultation and a neural check. This gives a baseline assessment of the nervous system and allows the team to curate the best biostacking protocols for every individual. In the future, Janelle and Cory plan to expand on this by onboarding Neurofeedback and QEEG to truly bridge the gap between their work with the Amen Clinics and their client’s journey to further fine tune protocols. This will help track the progress of patients using the modalities at Desert Moon as well as all lifestyle choices and changes. She is constantly working on fine tuning protocols
to the specific needs of individuals on a mind body level with a focus on cellular and brain health. Modalities such as hyperbaric therapy are not one-size-fits-all; every patient is different and protocols vary.
According to Janelle, working alongside Dr. Sharma has been lifechanging. Future offerings will include Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation (EBOO) as well as exosome-based therapies. Also on the horizon is the inclusion of additional functional and longevity testing.
Long term, both Janelle and Cory envision opening additional Desert Moon centers. As a family, they and their children have all lived the wellness experience and watched Desert Moon grow. It is their hope that the children will continue working alongside them in whatever capacity they feel fit.
July 11th, Desert Moon celebrates its 3 year anniversary. The community is invited to take part in the celebration which will begin at 4pm with a ribbon cutting at 4:30pm. Desert Moon Hyperbarics and Wellness is located at 8945 W. Post Road, Las Vegas NV 89148.
DYLAN…
According to Dylan, his journey with Desert Moon has been an amazing one. He’s been working there, along with his family since day one and the education he has received is second to none.
Prior to working at Desert Moon, Dylan had been consistently using hyperbaric at home to help recover from sports injuries and inflammation. Once the center was open, he added the other modalities to his wellness routine. Dylan’s other passion is music. As an EDM DJ he is always on the move. Travelling and producing his own music takes a toll on both his body and mind. He tries to remain balanced and between stacking modalities at Desert Moon, working out in the gym and staying hydrated, he seems to have it all covered.
ROBERT…
Robert sees his wellness journey as a continuous evolution, shaped by the habits and goals he commits to each day. As he grows and learns, his routines naturally shift toward healthier, more intentional practices that align with both his personal and professional aspirations.
He realizes the importance of taking care of his health and does everything he can to optimize his body. While his main routine consists of using the hyperbaric chamber alongside red light therapy, when he experiences a bit of writer’s block or is stressed, he does use Brain Tap which helps him relax and focus. He also uses leg compression after shows as recovery from jumping around on stage all night. Hyperbaric is also the perfect way for Dylan to grab a nap following long nights on stage. That allows him to get back on track and sleep better and harder.
Dylan sees his wellness journey evolving and being a constant in his life. His future at Desert Moon is bright and he plans to continue his music career while also staying involved at the center and helping the business grow. He is an amazing individual and has plans to help this community grow while growing his own brand.
JACK…
Like his brothers, Jack is an athlete. A few years ago, following an ankle sprain, he started hyperbaric sessions at home for healing and recovery. Now, he is in it at least a few times a week and says it brings up his energy and just makes him feel better. Jumping in the chamber after wrestling practice has become a routine. Jack also utilizes most of the other modalities offered at Desert Moon such as Red light therapy, Align Mat, PEMF, Brain Tap and Nano Vi. This summer you will find Jack working at Desert Moon as a chamber attendant assisting wherever he is needed. He has such an energy about him when talking about Desert Moon. We will be seeing even more of him in the years to come.
By 2029, Robert plans to complete his bachelor’s degree in nursing and wrap up his collegiate wrestling career. After graduating from college in Minot, North Dakota, he intends to return to Las Vegas full-time to contribute more deeply to Desert Moon. He is passionate about health and healing, and aims to expand his knowledge in the wellness space by staying current with new approaches and techniques that can benefit the community.
Beyond wrestling, Robert also plans to pursue a competitive career in no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He’s excited to stay active, challenge himself physically, and bring that same discipline and mindset into everything he does— especially the work that his family is building at Desert Moon.
MAKENA MOON…
Makena Moon is the youngest of the family and the one that Desert Moon was actually named after. In fact, when Cory and Janelle were trademarking the business name, Makena had to sign off on it which she aptly did in crayon. I met her at a Desert Moon event where she was assisting attendees and serving electrolyte-infused lemonade. Speaking to her about wellness, she let me know that she enjoys the twice a month hyperbaric chamber sessions she shares with her mom. She actually started diving way back to when she was in her mom’s tummy. Makena also enjoys laying on the Align Mat and occasionally utilizing Brain Tap. You will often find her at Desert Moon helping out and practicing the kidfriendly biohacks.

PLASTICS IN OUR BODIES >>> A New Frontier in Human Health

Most people are aware that plastic pollution is an environmental concern. But what’s less widely known, even among health-conscious individuals, is that plastic isn’t just in oceans, soil, and food packaging. It’s now being found in human tissues. In recent years, scientists have begun detecting microscopic plastic particles not just in the stool or bloodstream, but in the lungs, liver, reproductive organs, and even the brain. While the term microplastics is commonly used, the particles detected in human tissues are often much smaller, technically classified as nanoplastics, capable of crossing cellular membranes and entering biological systems previously thought to be protected. These discoveries represent a new chapter in environmental medicine. We are only beginning to understand the potential impact of these particles on inflammation, endocrine signaling, mitochondrial health, and the microbiome.
While the microplastics in the human body science is still evolving, the trend is clear: exposure is nearly universal, and individual response depends on a range of factors including genetics, nutrition, and detoxification capacity. Here, we explore what we currently know about micro- and nanoplastics in the human body, what’s still being studied, and what proactive steps can be taken to reduce exposure and support your body’s natural elimination systems. Our aim is not to alarm but to equip you with the latest information so you can make thoughtful, evidence-guided decisions about your long-term health.
From Environment to Endothelium: The Scope of Human Exposure
Global plastic production has surpassed 460 million metric tons annually, with projections to double by 2040. While most public attention focuses on visible macroplastics, it’s the fragmented particles (those smaller than a human hair) that pose the greatest risk to internal human biology. These particles are now ubiquitous as they have been detected in bottled water, household dust, soil, seafood, produce irrigated with contaminated water, and even indoor air. More significantly, studies have confirmed their presence in biological specimens including blood, placenta, breast milk, cerebrospinal fluid, and testicular tissue.
This convergence of environmental contamination and internal bioaccumulation highlights the need for a shift in both public awareness and clinical practice. We are no longer dealing with a purely ecological concern; this is now a pressing issue in human systems biology.
Mechanisms of Toxicity: Nanoplastics as Systemic Stressors
Once inside the body, nanoplastics are far from inert. Their surfaces attract and carry a range of lipophilic toxins, including phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), PCBs, and heavy metals. Their size allows them to
evade traditional mucosal defenses, enter circulation, and deposit into organs and tissues. The biological effects include:
• Chronic oxidative stress, driven by reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and mitochondrial dysfunction
• Endocrine disruption, interfering with estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, and insulin signaling microplastics in the human body
• Immune activation, contributing to persistent low-grade inflammation and immune dysregulation
• Disruption of gut microbiota, decreasing microbial diversity and increasing intestinal permeability
• Neuroinflammation, via potential translocation across the bloodbrain barrier taken together, these effects help explain why exposure to microplastics has been associated with conditions ranging from infertility and metabolic syndrome to neurodegenerative diseases and cardiovascular risk.
Clinical Vignette: Kelly, Age 41 (Name and age altered for privacy) Kelly, a 41-year-old patient with a history of clean eating and daily exercise, presented with complaints of fatigue, irregular menstrual cycles, and persistent brain fog. Standard labs were unremarkable. Advanced testing revealed elevated urinary BPA and multiple phthalate metabolites. Zonulin and LPS levels suggested increased intestinal permeability, and 8-OHdG confirmed oxidative stress. Her plan included removal of major plastic exposure sources, sauna therapy to promote excretion, increased fiber and cruciferous vegetables to support Phase II detoxification, and targeted supplementation with NAC, glutathione, and methylation cofactors. Within two months, her biomarker profile improved, and she reported resolution of brain fog and improved energy and hormonal regularity.
This case highlights the importance of functional diagnostics and personalized detox strategies, even in patients who appear “healthy” by conventional metrics.
Emerging Research:
What We Know and What We’re Learning
• Cardiovascular Disease: A 2024 observational study from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that individuals with microplastics in circulation had double the risk of myocardial infarction or stroke compared to those without.
• Reproductive Impact: A 2024 tissue analysis study identified plastic polymers in 100% of testicular specimens collected post-mortem, suggesting a link to declining sperm quality and hormone dysregulation.
• Neurotoxicity: Animal models have demonstrated that nanoplastics can cross the blood-brain barrier, triggering neuroinflammatory cascades and impairing glial cell function. Human implications are

currently under investigation. Though causality has yet to be fully established in humans, the biological plausibility is strong- and the correlative data increasingly difficult to ignore.
Clinical Assessment: How We Evaluate Plastic Burden
Direct quantification of microplastics in tissue is limited to research settings, but clinical proxies can be used to assess toxin load and detox capacity. These include:
• Urinary BPA and phthalate metabolites (MEHP, MBzP, etc.)
• Leaky gut markers: zonulin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), diamine oxidase
• Heavy metals: cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury—often co-exposed with plastic compounds These biomarkers allow for objective monitoring and personalization of treatment.
Our Clinical Model: Minimize, Mobilize, Monitor
At Elite Medical Associates, we apply a precision medicine approach to environmental toxins:
1. Minimize Exposure: We begin with a detailed environmental audit, eliminating sources like plastic water bottles, synthetic personal care products, processed food packaging, and airborne contaminants from synthetic textiles.
2. Mobilize Elimination: Detox pathways are supported through fiber-rich diets, antioxidant repletion, infrared sauna therapy, and liver-specific nutraceuticals including glutathione, NAC, sulforaphane, and alpha lipoic acid. We also incorporate gentle binders—like modified citrus pectin or chlorella—as needed.
3. Using repeat biomarker testing, we track reductions in toxin load, improvements in oxidative balance, and symptom resolution. Adjustments are made based on data and patient response.
Biochemistry of Detox: What the Liver Needs to Work Efficiently
Detoxification is not a passive process—it’s enzymatically driven and requires nutrient support:
• Phase I (oxidation): Converts toxins into reactive intermediates. Requires B vitamins, magnesium, flavonoids, and antioxidants.
• Phase II (conjugation): Packages toxins for excretion. Requires methyl donors (SAMe, B12, folate), sulfur donors (NAC, taurine), and cofactors like selenium and molybdenum.
A deficiency in any of these substrates—or a mismatch in Phase I/II timing—can result in the buildup of reactive intermediates and tissuelevel inflammation. Genomic Personalization: When Detox Needs More Precision For patients who continue to exhibit high toxin levels despite a clean lifestyle and supplementation, we leverage genomic testing via Intex DNA to assess detoxification efficiency at the genetic level. Key polymorphisms include:
• Glutathione Pathways: GSTM1, GSTT1, GSR
• Methylation & Transsulfuration: MTHFR, MTRR, BHMT, CBS
This data allows us to identify biochemical bottlenecks and tailor support, whether that means upregulating glutathione production, adjusting methylation support, or timing detox cycles to match metabolic rhythms.
Resilience in a Plastic World
Microplastics (and more accurately, nanoplastics) are now part of the modern human experience. Avoidance is no longer realistic. But resilience is absolutely achievable. By understanding how these particles interact with human physiology, measuring their indirect impact, and tailoring interventions through testing and genetics, we can reduce toxin burden, protect hormonal and neurological health, and preserve cellular function.
At Elite Medical Associates, our mission is not just to manage disease, but to optimize the conditions for health and longevity, even in a world that wasn’t designed for it. >>> THE BODY20 EXPERIENCE
Choose Your Workout, Track Your Progress
WHAT IS EMS
Whole body EMS, or electro-muscle stimulation, utilizes training suits that contain 16 to 18 electrodes, placed onto all major muscle groups. Through the electrodes, stimulation is emitted to create a strong contraction. Along with these contractions, exercises are performed and parameters are set by your trainer to work towards different goals under a muscle development program, an endurance program or a combination of the two.
THE BODY20 EXPERIENCE
BODY20 is not your typical gym. Workouts are fast-paced and last less than 30 minutes. Each session, a personal trainer guides the member through a personalized, one-on-one program focused on either strength, cardio, or a mix of both. Prior to beginning the session, the member is outfitted with a lightweight, adjustable, electrode-enabled suit which provides their body with over 150 times more muscle contractions than a typical workout. Workouts are guided and may include the use of light hand weights, bands, and weighted balls. Each workout burns calories, reduces cellulite, tones the body, increases blood circulation and builds lean muscle. By following the guidance of professional trainers at every stage, members typically see improvements in posture, core strength, and even back discomfort while addressing muscle imbalances.

THE POWERHOUSE WITHIN Why Mitochondrial Health Matters
Inspired by the book Good Energy by Dr. Casey Means
As a nurse practitioner, I often talk to patients about nutrition, sleep, stress, and exercise but what many people don’t realize is that these daily choices have one common target: our mitochondria. These tiny organelles inside nearly every cell are responsible for producing the energy our bodies depend on, and they are at the center of both our health and disease.
In Good Energy, Dr. Casey Means emphasizes that mitochondrial health is not just a buzzword—it’s foundational. When our mitochondria thrive, we feel energized, clear-headed, and resilient. When mitochondria don’t function optimally, the body’s energy supply and balance are disrupted.
Understanding Mitochondria
Mitochondria convert nutrients from the food we eat into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the body. But their role extends well beyond energy production. Mitochondria are involved in regulating inflammation, controlling oxidative stress, supporting hormone balance, and signaling cells to repair or recycle when needed.
Why Mitochondrial Health Matters in Clinical Practice
When I see patients with persistent fatigue, brain fog, hormone imbalances, or chronic inflammation, I wonder: how are their mitochondria
functioning?
Healthy mitochondria help support:
• Stable energy levels—physical and mental
• Cognitive clarity and mood stability
• Efficient metabolism and healthy aging
• Reduced inflammation and immune support
When mitochondria are impaired, we often see a rise in conditions like:
• Consistent movement: Even walking or light aerobic exercise supports mitochondria.
• Restorative sleep: Deep, regular sleep gives cells the time and space to repair.
• Stress reduction tools: Whether it’s breathwork, mindfulness, time outdoors, or simply unplugging—lowering chronic stress protects mitochondrial function.
• Smart supplementation (when appropriate): Nutrients like CoQ10, PQQ, NAD+ precursors, and alpha-lipoic acid can be considered under medical guidance.
Final Thoughts
Mitochondrial health may not be something patients ask about directly, but it’s at the root of so many symptoms we see in practice. Supporting mitochondrial function is one of the most effective, upstream strategies we have—not only for boosting energy, but also for reducing disease risk and improving long-term quality of life.
Taking care of your mitochondria is taking care of you—from the cellular level up. By prioritizing mitochondrial health, you're not just boosting energy—you're laying the groundwork for disease prevention, emotional resilience, and long-term vitality.

>>> Ritual Over Routine
WELLNESS PRACTICES YOU CAN EASILY DO EVERY DAY
In a culture that glorifies busy days and burnout, the idea of "wellness" often gets reduced to another task on an endless to-do list. But true wellness is not about perfection or productivity—it’s about presence. That’s where the concept of ritual comes in.
While routines help us function, rituals help us feel. They transform everyday actions into meaningful practices. By slowing down just a little, we can infuse intention into our daily lives, creating space for clarity, resilience, and restoration.
Here are five simple, science-backed wellness practices you can do every day. They require minimal time and effort, but offer deeply nourishing benefits; physically, mentally, and emotionally.
1. Elevate Your Morning with Mushroom Coffee
For many people, mornings begin with coffee. But there's a growing shift toward functional beverages, as in drinks that do more than just wake you up. Enter: mushroom coffee.
Mushroom coffee blends adaptogenic fungi like Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, and Chaga with coffee or alternative bases like cacao or chicory. These medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda to enhance focus, energy, and immunity.
What Makes It a Ritual:
Instead of grabbing a caffeine fix and rushing out the door, preparing and drinking mushroom coffee can become a calming, intentional process. The act of brewing, pouring, and slowly sipping invites mindfulness into your morning, grounding you before the chaos begins.
Benefits:
Lion’s Mane: Supports brain health, focus, and memory by stimulating nerve growth factor (NGF).
Cordyceps: Enhances stamina, supports adrenal function, and improves cellular energy (ATP production).
Chaga: Packed with antioxidants, supports immune function and reduces oxidative stress.
Reishi: Promotes calm and balances mood through adaptogenic regulation of the stress response.
Starting your day with a brew designed to enhance cognitive and immune function can help you stay focused and resilient throughout the day.
2. Begin the Day with Five Minutes of Journaling
Before reaching for your phone or diving into emails, carve out just five minutes for journaling. It’s a deceptively simple practice that offers profound results. Whether you’re jotting down dreams, setting intentions, or clearing mental fog, the act of putting pen to paper connects thought to action.
What Makes It a Ritual:
Journaling is more than self-expression—it’s a way to check in with your inner world. When done consistently, it becomes a grounding anchor that sets the emotional tone for your day.
Benefits:
Mental clarity: Helps organize thoughts and reduces overwhelm.
Emotional regulation: Encourages expression of feelings that might otherwise get bottled up.
Stress relief: Studies show that expressive writing can reduce cortisol and improve mood.
Goal orientation: Writing down intentions increases the likelihood of follow-through.
Try beginning with prompts like: What do I need today? or What am I grateful for right now? You don’t need to write perfectly—you just need to write honestly.
3. Integrate Midday Movement for Energy and Mood
Most of us spend large parts of the day sedentary—especially if our work is screen-based. But even short bursts of movement can dramatically shift your mental and physical state.
You don’t need to commit to an hour-long workout. Just 5–15 minutes of movement, such as stretching, walking, or dancing, can recalibrate your energy and regulate your nervous system.
What Makes It a Ritual:
Instead of treating movement as something you "have" to do, treat it as something you get to do. A moment to reconnect with your body, get your blood flowing, and reawaken parts of yourself that have gone dormant through stillness.
Benefits:
Cognitive refresh: Movement increases blood flow to the brain, improving focus and creativity.
Mood boost: Releases endorphins and serotonin, elevating your emotional state.
Metabolic regulation: Supports digestion, blood sugar stability, and lymphatic flow.
Postural health: Counteracts the effects of long-term sitting, reducing tension and fatigue.
For a simple ritual, try stepping outside for a quick walk after lunch or doing a few sun salutations to reset between tasks.
4. End the Day with Intentional Breathwork or Meditation
As the day winds down, the mind often does not. Racing thoughts, screen exposure, and stress can make it hard to transition into restorative sleep. A brief evening breathwork or meditation practice helps regulate your nervous system and prepare your body for deep rest.
Even 5–10 minutes of deep breathing, body scans, or mindfulness meditation can help you slip into a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state, priming your body for quality sleep.
What Makes It a Ritual:
This practice becomes a closing ceremony for the day—a gentle signal that you're safe, you're home, and it’s time to rest. Creating a consistent wind-down ritual also supports circadian rhythm regulation.
Benefits:
Stress reduction: Activates the vagus nerve, lowering cortisol and heart
By Sarah Schwefel
rate.
Improved sleep: Deep breathing helps decrease sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep).
Emotional processing: Gives space for reflection, closure, and release. Increased resilience: Regular practice improves your ability to handle future stressors with greater ease.
To deepen the experience, try dimming the lights, using calming aromatherapy (like lavender or sandalwood), and sitting or lying in a quiet space without distractions.
5. Create Micro-Moments of Presence During Hydration
Hydration is essential, but often unconscious. Instead of mindlessly drinking water, make it a moment of self-check-in. Every time you sip, pause and ask: How do I feel right now? What do I need more or less of? These small moments add up, and they teach your brain to practice presence.
What Makes It a Ritual:
It transforms a biological need into a soulful pause. You hydrate not just your body, but your awareness. Use this moment to reset, re-ground, and return to yourself.
Self-awareness: Builds a habit of regularly scanning your emotional and physical state.
Mindful transitions: These pauses help ease the transition between work blocks or social interactions.
Preventative care: Dehydration can mimic fatigue and anxiety—regular check-ins can prevent misdiagnosis of your own needs.
Try using a favorite glass or bottle, perhaps adding lemon or herbs to make it more sensory. Every detail helps turn this habit into something intentional.
Final Thoughts: The Power of Ritual in a Noisy World
Modern life can feel like a whirlwind of notifications, obligations, and constant motion. Rituals offer a counterbalance and a way to come back to yourself. They don’t require more time, just more presence.
By integrating these five daily practices you’re not just building healthy habits, you’re cultivating a deeper relationship with your body, your mind, and the moments in between.
Ritual is not about perfection. It’s about returning to yourself, again and again with care, curiosity, and intention.
Member Testimonial: Tom Wallek, Age 73 OSTEOSTRONG
JOHN WETZEL: As a Navy veteran with a disciplined lifestyle, what prompted you to join OsteoStrong at 71, and how has it integrated into your routine?
TOM WALLEK: I joined OsteoStrong in March 2023 after a 2021 osteoporosis diagnosis, revealed when I was thrown from a golf cart and broke my hip. My orthopedic doctor informed me my DEXA scan showed a score of -3.1 to -3.3 T Score, indicating severe osteoporosis. OsteoStrong has become a key part of my weekly routine, fitting seamlessly with its short, focused sessions.
JW: Can you describe your experience with OsteoStrong over the past two years?
TW: I love the experience at OsteoStrong. The core protocol, combined with modalities like red light therapy and the BioCharger, has been fantastic. The combination has led to significant improvements in my overall health and well-being.
JW: What changes have you noticed in your strength, balance, or overall health?
TW: Before OsteoStrong, playing 18 holes of golf left me barely able to walk, with knee pain and back issues that lingered for days. After two years, I can play 18 holes and feel ready for more. My knee is stable, and my back no longer hurts the next day, allowing me to golf on consecutive days if I choose.
JW: OsteoStrong emphasizes bone health. Have you seen measurable improvements in your bone density or reduced concerns about osteoporosis or fractures?
TW: Alongside OsteoStrong, I’ve taken AlgaeCal and its collagen supplement diligently for over a year. This combination has significantly improved my bone density in my hip and lumbar spine, reducing my worries about fractures and osteoporosis-related risks.
JW: How does OsteoStrong’s approach, like osteogenic loading, compare to other fitness or wellness programs you’ve tried?
By John Wetzel
TW: In my younger years, I lifted weights and went to the gym, focusing on muscle strength without considering bone health. OsteoStrong’s osteogenic loading specifically targets bone density, which is a gamechanger compared to traditional workouts.
JW: As a veteran, physical resilience is likely important. Has OsteoStrong helped you maintain or regain confidence in your physical abilities, like mobility or posture?
TW: OsteoStrong and AlgaeCal have greatly reduced my fragility concerns. I’m confident stepping off curbs or moving without fear of my hip or ankle giving out. My mobility and posture have improved, giving me a sense of physical security.
JW: Were there specific health challenges before joining OsteoStrong, and how has the program addressed them?
TW: Despite good overall health—strong heart, lungs, and kidneys—I was shocked by my osteoporosis diagnosis. Before OsteoStrong, I had recurring back issues from a slipped disc every six months, sidelining me for weeks. Since joining, I haven’t had a single episode, and my knee and lumbar spine issues have resolved, which has been a huge relief.
JW: OsteoStrong sessions are short but intense. How do they suit your lifestyle, and what are your thoughts on additional modalities like BioCharger and red light therapy?
TW: The short, intense sessions fit perfectly into my lifestyle. I spend about two hours at OsteoStrong, including an hour with the BioCharger, which I love. I was so impressed with red light therapy that I now use it at home, inspired by my experience at OsteoStrong.
JW: At 73, many worry about staying active without injury. How has OsteoStrong’s low-impact approach worked for you in terms of safety and effectiveness?
TW: The low-impact approach is a confidence builder. I can swing a golf club with full force without worrying about injury. It’s effective and feels safe, which is crucial at my age.
JW: Have you shared your OsteoStrong experience with other veterans or peers? What would you tell someone your age considering the program?
TW: I’ve shared my experience with a few peers diagnosed with osteoporosis, convincing one to join OsteoStrong. I’d tell someone my age it’s a safe, effective way to strengthen bones, improve mobility, and regain confidence, especially if they’re concerned about fractures.
JW: Looking back on nearly two years with OsteoStrong, what’s the most unexpected benefit, and how has it impacted your quality of life?
TW: The biggest surprise is the confidence to stay active without limitations, feeling like I can do almost anything I did when younger. My golf game has improved significantly—I can swing freely without restrictions—enhancing my quality of life and enjoyment of activities I love.
STAY REFRESHED
The Best Summer Fruits for Hydration and Health
When temperatures rise, staying hydrated becomes essential- not just for comfort but for overall wellness. While drinking plenty of water is a must, nature also offers delicious and nutrient-rich options to keep your body cool and hydrated. Among the best are watermelon, coconut, pineapple, cantaloupe, and mangoes. These vibrant, juicy fruits do more than just quench your thirst, they provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support your body from the inside out. These fruits don’t just keep thirst at bay, they also offer vital nutrients that support your skin, digestion, immunity, and energy levels during the heat of summer.
1. Watermelon: The Ultimate Thirst Quencher
Watermelon is perhaps the most iconic fruit of summer. Composed of over 90% water, it’s an ideal snack for hydration. But watermelon doesn’t just hydrate, it’s also rich in lycopene, an antioxidant known for its antiinflammatory properties and potential to protect skin from sun damage.
This fruit is also a good source of vitamins A and C, both of which support healthy skin and immunity. Watermelon is low in calories and high in electrolytes like potassium, making it a smart choice post-workout or after a day in the sun.
How to Enjoy It: Blend it into a slushy, cube it for fruit salads, or enjoy it straight from the rind.
2. Coconut: Nature’s Electrolyte Drink
Coconut water, often called “nature’s sports drink,” is incredibly hydrating and packed with electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, sodium, and calcium. These minerals help regulate fluid balance, making coconut water especially helpful for replenishing what’s lost through perspiration.
Coconut meat offers healthy fats and fiber, contributing to satiety and digestive health. It's especially good for people who need to stay hydrated without added sugars or artificial ingredients.
How to Enjoy It: Sip chilled coconut water straight from the shell, blend it into smoothies, or pour it over ice with a splash of lime for a tropical twist on a mocktail.
3. Pineapple: Sweet, Tangy, and Hydrating
Pineapple isn’t just sweet and satisfying, it’s also high in water content and rich in vitamin C, which supports immune health and collagen production. One of pineapple’s key compounds is bromelain, an enzyme that aids digestion and may help reduce inflammation and bloating, which are common during hot, humid months.
This tropical fruit is a tasty way to fight fatigue and give your body a natural boost without resorting to sugary drinks or processed snacks.
How to Enjoy It: Grill it for a smoky-sweet treat, add chunks to a tropical fruit bowl, or blend into frozen popsicles for a refreshing twist.
4. Cantaloupe: A
Melon Full of Moisture
Cantaloupe, like watermelon, is incredibly hydrating with a water content of about 89%. It’s also rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, a nutrient essential for skin health and vision. The orange flesh is packed with antioxidants and fiber, making it as good for your digestive system as it is for hydration.
Cantaloupe is naturally low in calories and sugar, which makes it a great option for people watching their blood sugar levels during the warmer months.
How to Enjoy It: Serve cantaloupe in chilled slices, puree into smoothies, or combine with mint and cucumber for a refreshing salad.
5. Mangoes: Tropical Fuel for Energy and Hydration
Mangoes are another juicy powerhouse perfect for summer hydration. Though they’re a bit lower in water content than melons, they make up for it with an abundance of vitamins (especially vitamin C and vitamin A) as well as antioxidants like zeaxanthin and beta-carotene.
Mangoes also contain digestive enzymes that support gut health, and their natural sugars can provide a quick energy boost.
How to Enjoy It: Blend into smoothies, cube for salsa or salads, or freeze into mango sorbet for a healthy dessert.
>>> VIRTUAL HEALTHCARE Moves Into the Nevada Market
In today’s fragmented healthcare landscape, this simple truth often gets overlooked: having a primary care physician (PCP) increases your lifespan. It’s not just about managing illness, it’s about building a long-term relationship with a doctor who knows you, listens to you, and partners with you in your health journey.
This month, Vegas Wellness Magazine asked me to share more about Virtual MD 360, a telehealth-based practice fully equipped to virtually assist patients looking for quality healthcare. I’m an internist with nearly three decades of experience in clinical medicine and triple board certification, including a board certification in Lifestyle Medicine, a field I believe lies at the very heart of true longevity medicine. While "longevity" has become a buzzword, its essence is simple: good medicine rooted in prevention, lifestyle, and partnership. I practice this every day.
A Shift Toward Virtual Care
Like many, my approach to medicine evolved during the pandemic. Working with a national telehealth company, I cared for nearly 2,000 patients across the country via video, phone, and text. What stood out, again and again, was a common frustration: the lack of time. Patients wanted to be heard. Some even booked multiple back-to-back visits just to have meaningful conversations.
That experience led me to create Virtual MD 360, my own telehealthbased practice. My vision: a small, membership-based practice without
intermediaries- no insurance red tape, no clock ticking down your appointment. Just you and your doctor, when you need it, with as much time as necessary.
I live in Las Vegas, but my practice has patients from all 26 states where I am licensed to practice medicine.
Why Telehealth Works for Primary Care
Telemedicine isn’t a compromise, it’s a powerful tool. In fact, 70–80% of what’s done in primary care doesn’t require a physical exam. My model allows me to be available all the time, even when I travel and for patients to access care from the comfort of their homes or from anywhere they might be. It’s flexible, convenient, and effective.
Most importantly, this model offers something that has become rare in modern healthcare: time. Time to understand your history, your risks, your goals. And time to coach you toward sustainable change.
There is a famous saying in medical school: “if you do not have a diagnosis after you talked with a patient, what is the next step?” Getting more history! So I get to have the time that I need with the patient, the time that they need from me, and this is how we both get to know what will help them the best. Time is the most precious commodity in medicine.
The Longevity Equation: Lifespan + Healthspan
What people want is to live a long and healthy life. I have never heard anybody say otherwise. Longevity medicine isn’t just about living longer, it’s about living better. I break it down into two components:
• Lifespan: preventing premature death.
• Healthspan: maximizing the years we live in good health.
Preventing Premature Death
Around 80% of premature deaths are preventable, often linked to:
• Tobacco use
• Poor diet
• Lack of physical activity
Take heart disease- the number one killer. Research shows that the following six interventions can reduce your risk by up to 90–95%:
1. Lower total cholesterol by 50%
2. Lower diastolic blood pressure by 6 mmHg
3. Eliminate smoking
4. Maintain a healthy weight and waist circumference
5. Engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly
6. Eat 5+ servings of fruits and vegetables daily
The second leading cause of death, cancer, is also largely preventable through:
1. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol
2. Regular physical activity
3. Maintaining a healthy weight
4. A mostly plant-based diet (Michael Pollan said it best: “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.”)
5. Following recommended screening guidelines
Extending Healthspan: The 6 Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine
For over 20 years, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine has championed six evidence-based pillars that form the foundation of long, healthy living:
1. Nutrition
2. Physical activity
3. Sleep
4. Mental well-being
5. Avoiding risky substances
6. Social connection
These pillars aren’t new, but changing behavior is hard, and that’s where a physician becomes a coach. It’s also where time and continuity of care become critical.
I added a mark on all of the above interventions that are suitable for virtual medicine and there is nothing clearer!
Personalized Medicine Starts with Personal Relationships
There’s a lot of talk today about precision and personalized medicine, but how can care be truly personal if doctors don’t have the time to get to know their patients? How many times patients are told to schedule another appointment when they bring up just one more thing to discuss?
At Virtual MD 360, I make sure you have the time you deserve. I get to know your story, your context, your priorities. That allows me to create care plans that are truly tailored and sustainable. If you have one or more things on your list, we have time for each issue and we will clear that list!
The Virtual MD 360 Experience
Your journey with Virtual MD 360 begins with a complimentary meet-andgreet. If we’re a good fit, you'll receive the necessary paperwork (contract, consent, intake, demographics) like it happens every time you go to see a new doctor in any clinic. Once complete, I’ll set up your secure chart in a HIPAA-compliant electronic medical record system where you’ll have access to your records and secure messaging.
The first visit is usually the longest. At one time I’ve spent up to two hours with a complex patient, followed by additional visits that week to gather the full picture. After the visit, I may order labs, refer you to a specialist, send prescriptions—everything a traditional physician would do, just without the wait, bureaucracy, or rushed interactions.
Follow-ups are as frequent as needed, sometimes the next day, sometimes every week, sometimes only when you consider it is needed. Care is fluid and flexible, built around your needs.

A Holistic Health Overview
It is no secret, our healthcare is severely fragmented! Many patients told me they were searching for a doctor to connect all the dots- review their medications, labs, records from multiple physicians, and deliver a comprehensive, big-picture evaluation. One other service I offer is a dedicated one-hour review session just for that purpose (and this hour does not include the time I spend reviewing records beforehand). Patients leave with clarity, a strategy, and a plan of action.
A Framework for Change: The 3 R’s
One simple, effective framework I use with my patients is: Recognition - (Re)do - Result
Recognize the issue (Re)do through an action plan
Evaluate the Results
It brings structure and accountability to the process of change—and supports lasting results.
Membership and Access
Virtual MD 360 is a membership-based practice, with an introductory rate of just $100/month—less than what many spend on streaming subscriptions. Members receive ongoing access, timely follow-ups, and continuity of care without surprise charges or time limits.
Final Thoughts
Medicine should be about people, not paperwork. Relationships, not red tape. Health, not just disease.
At Virtual MD 360, I offer what I believe is the future of healthcare: real relationships, rooted in lifestyle, delivered through the convenience and flexibility of telehealth.
If you're ready for care that puts you at the center—on your schedule, your terms—I'm here when you’re ready.

>>> Biohacking with JohnXD
Welcome back to Biohacking with JohnXD! This issue dives into three powerful tools for collecting data to optimize health and longevity. As the saying goes, “If I can track it, I can change it!” In biohacking, more data means deeper insights into our bodies, enabling us to fine-tune our wellness protocols. Let’s explore WHOOP, blood microscopy, and thermography—three practices that have transformed my approach to health and longevity.
Quick Update: BrainTap Progress
BrainTap continues to deliver great results. I use it daily, and it has become a non-negotiable at this point. As mentioned in the last issue, I used Neural Check to collect pre- and post-session data, offering valuable insights into my brain’s response. For those interested, visit Janelle at Desert Moon Wellness to experience this and access your own data.
1. WHOOP: Wearable Health Tracking
What is WHOOP?
WHOOP is a screenless, wearable tracker that monitors heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), sleep stages, respiratory rate, skin temperature, and blood oxygen levels. Its subscription-based app delivers personalized insights on recovery, strain, and sleep. The latest WHOOP MG (2025) adds ECG monitoring and a “Healthspan WHOOP Age” feature.
My Experience:
I’ve worn my WHOOP since September 2022, and it’s been a gamechanger for tracking sleep, strain, and recovery. The data has guided adjustments to my workouts and sleep habits. For example, I’ve optimized exercise intensity based on my daily Recovery Score and tracked calories burned. The Healthspan feature even suggests I’m “aging backward”—a motivating insight into my body’s daily performance.
Why It’s Great for Biohackers:
WHOOP’s detailed metrics empower biohackers to balance training, recovery, and lifestyle choices, ensuring peak performance without overtraining.
2. Blood Microscopy: Real-Time Blood Insights
What is Blood Microscopy?
Blood microscopy, or live blood analysis, involves examining a fresh blood sample under a high-powered microscope in real-time. Using dark-field or phase-contrast microscopy, it reveals the shape, movement, and behavior of live red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma, unlike traditional fixed-sample tests.
My Experience:
Since May 2024, I’ve worked with my good friend Dr. Thomas Brewer on blood microscopy, and it’s one of the most fascinating tools I’ve used. Seeing my blood cells move in real-time is incredible—it’s like a window into my body’s current state. As a biohacker, I use it to assess how interventions (e.g., supplements or diet changes) affect my blood. This individualized data lets me optimize my protocols, confirming what works for my unique physiology.
Why It’s Great for Biohackers:
Blood microscopy supports self-experimentation by showing immediate
changes in blood cell morphology, helping biohackers tailor health strategies with precision.
3. Thermography: Visualizing Inflammation
What is Thermography?
Thermography, or thermal imaging, is a non-invasive technique that uses infrared cameras to detect heat patterns on the body’s surface. It highlights temperature variations linked to inflammation, blood flow changes, or tissue abnormalities, offering insights into circulatory or musculoskeletal issues without radiation.
My Experience:
As a photographer, I was excited to try thermography with Cheri-Lynn Burke at Las Vegas Thermography. The process is simple: a camera captures images of exposed skin (I opted for a full-body scan), taking about 15-20 minutes. The images are sent to a doctor, who returns a detailed report with findings and visuals. The quick turnaround and clear insights helped me identify areas to adjust for better optimization.
Why It’s Great for Biohackers:
Thermography’s real-time data on inflammation and metabolic processes helps biohackers pinpoint stress points, optimize recovery, and experiment with interventions, all non-invasively. That’s the real key- non-invasive.
Final Thoughts
These tools—WHOOP, blood microscopy, and thermography—are invaluable for tracking and optimizing my health. While I always listen to how I feel, these data-driven insights allow me to address potential issues early or refine my experiments. Biohacking is personal, so find what resonates with you. A huge thank you to Dr. Thomas Brewer and CheriLynn Burke for their expertise and support in our community. Stay curious and keep optimizing!

It's Not You -
It's the Stage You Are In
In 2019, I accomplished something I hadn’t been able to do in my entire adult life: I lost thirty pounds and finally fit into single-digitsize clothing. Friends and clients asked me what my “secret” was, but the truth is—there wasn’t one. I moved daily, cut sugar and refined carbs to heal my leaky gut, and finally drank enough water. The tools weren’t revolutionary—what made the difference was motivation.
After that big win, I thought I had finally “cracked the code” on motivation. But within a year, when the world shut down in 2020, I found myself back in old patterns. Skipping workouts. Mindlessly snacking. Frustrated that I couldn’t “just stick to it,” even though I knew what had worked before. My environment, energy, and emotional bandwidth had completely shifted. I was expecting myself to perform at the same level in a totally different context.
That’s when it hit me: the tools hadn’t stopped working. I was in a different stage of change. And I was trying to apply the same strategy without recognizing that my readiness and needs had changed.
So many of us beat ourselves up for “not being motivated enough,” but motivation isn’t a fixed trait. It’s not something you either have or don’t. Motivation is fluid. It ebbs and flows based on our internal readiness, emotional state, and even the world around us. And when we don’t recognize where we actually are in the process of change, we end up using the wrong tools at the wrong time—and blaming ourselves for not getting results.
This is where the transtheoretical model of behavior change becomes a game-changer. I first learned about it in graduate school, and it gave me language and grace for something I had intuitively felt. It helps move us out of shame and into awareness. When we understand the stage we’re in, we can meet ourselves with the right kind of support… instead of chasing the elusive high of motivation.
The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change, sometimes simply called “the stages of change model,” was developed by psychologists James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente in the late 1970s. Created to understand how people quit smoking, it’s now used for all kinds of change—from health habits to relationships.
What makes this model so powerful is that it recognizes change as a process, not a flip of a switch. It honors that each of us move through different levels of readiness and that each stage requires a different kind of support. Learning this model as a coach was a lightbulb moment for me. I realized that the magic isn’t about doing more, it’s in knowing where someone is and what they need.
Stage 1: Precontemplation –
“They say I have a problem, but I’m fine.”
At this stage, change isn’t even on your radar. Or maybe it is—but only because someone else put it there. It’s the “They say I have a
problem, but I’m fine” phase. You might not see the need for change, or you might be too overwhelmed to face it. People here aren’t resistant—they’re often just disconnected, in survival mode, or unaware.
For a long time, I told myself I was just in a “busy season.” I stacked my calendar, said yes to everything, and convinced myself it was all temporary. But eventually, I realized that season had quietly become a lifestyle, and it wasn’t sustainable. I wasn’t intentionally ignoring my needs; I just didn’t see the full picture yet.
Precontemplation isn’t about being stubborn—it’s about not being ready yet. And the best support for someone in this stage isn’t pressure or performance plans. It's a gentle awareness. It’s a curious question, a shift in perspective, or a quiet moment that helps you realize, “Maybe something could be different.”
Stage 2: Contemplation
“Something’s got to give... but I’m not ready yet.”
In contemplation, you know there’s a shift you want to make, but you're not fully ready to act. You might be weighing the pros and cons. You might be scared of failing (again). You might be grieving what you’d have to let go of to move forward.
This is one of the most emotionally tender places to be and to coach a client from. There’s a flicker of hope, but it’s tangled up in doubt. “I know I can’t keep going like this,” or “I want to change, but I don’t know if I can stick to it,” is common language at this stage.
Compassion, clarity, and space to explore what’s true for a client are priorities in this stage. Journaling can be a powerful awareness exercise. Coaching conversations, values work, and small selfreflections can build trust and confidence.
Stage 3: Preparation
“I’m ready… I just don’t know where to start.”
Planning starts when awareness awakens. You’ve decided that a change needs to happen, and you’re ready to make it. And instead of motivation, you might feel overwhelmed, especially if past attempts didn’t stick.
In my own life, this is often the moment when I start making lists. I bought the planner. I rewatched the webinar. I cleared space—mentally, emotionally, or even physically—for what’s next. Preparation is full of promise, but it can also be a trap if we confuse planning with action.
The most helpful tools at this stage are simple, small steps: scheduling a walk, prepping one healthy meal, or setting up a support system. Accountability is key here to help translate intention into
movement.
Stage 4: Action “I’m
doing it!”
You’ve leaped, and you’re actively changing your behavior. This is the phase that gets celebrated the most. It’s visible. It’s exciting. People notice. This is where the gym selfies, meal prep posts, and morning routine reels live. Because of that, many people assume that action is the final destination. But it’s not. Action is just the middle of the process.
During my action phase, seeing results felt amazing, but staying consistent required effort. I had to protect my energy, adjust when things didn’t go to plan, and stay rooted in why I wanted this change. Support in this stage is about being resilient. What helps most is building flexible routines, tracking progress in a way that feels encouraging, and having systems or people to lean on when life inevitably interrupts your momentum.
Stage 5: Maintenance
“This is part of who I am now.”
In the maintenance stage, your new habit or behavior has started to feel integrated. You’re no longer white-knuckling every decision. There’s more ease. But that doesn’t mean it’s effortless.
This is the stage where many people let their guard down, assuming the change is “done.” In reality, maintenance requires recommitment. Not because you’re failing, but because life changes—and what worked three months ago might need adjusting today.
In my own life, I’ve noticed that when I’m in maintenance, I need reminders to stay connected to why I started. I might refresh my goals, reconnect with my support system, or update my routines to match my current season of life. The key
By Ilona Pamplona
is sustainability, not perfection. Maintenance is a process, not a finish line.
Stage 6: Relapse “I fell off… now what?”
Relapse doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it means something needs adjusting. It’s not a setback; it’s an invitation to learn what wasn’t sustainable. For me, it usually means I need to reconnect with my why, revisit my resources, and show myself some compassion.
What brings us back isn’t more willpower—it’s kindness. It’s the decision to begin again from where we are, not where we think we should be.
Understanding the stages of change is permission to stop forcing motivation and start responding to your actual needs. Motivation isn’t something you chase. It’s something that meets you when you know what stage you’re in, and you give yourself the support that fits.

Electrolysis: What Is It and How Can It Help? GET SUMMER READY
What exactly is electrolysis hair removal, and how does it work?
Electrolysis hair removal sends a tiny electric current to each hair follicle through a fine probe. Each hair is treated individually and gently removed with tweezers. This method is precise, effective, and FDA-approved for permanent hair removal.
Many of our readers deal with hormonal conditions like PCOS. Can electrolysis help with that?
Absolutely. Electrolysis is highly effective for clients with PCOS or other hormone-related hair growth conditions. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your goals, treatment plan, and what to expect in terms of progress and regrowth.
What’s the difference between electrolysis and laser hair removal?
Electrolysis is the only permanent method for all hair colors (including gray and blond) and all complexions.
By Arlette Yousif, Licensed Electrologist & Owner of Naked Beauty Electrolysis
Laser requires contrast between skin and hair color and is ineffective on gray or light hair. Laser can be useful for thinning hair on large areas like the back or legs, but usually requires frequent maintenance.
We’ve heard of something called “paradoxical hypertrichosis.” What is that, and how is it related to hair removal?
This is an occurrence of laser treatments triggering new hair growth in previously dormant follicles, meaning there was an area on the skin that didn’t grow hair before, but hair growth was activated after laser treatments. Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal solution for this type of occurrence.

LET YOUR STORY BE TOLD with the Help of a Ghostwriter
If you’ve ever fantasized about writing a book, whether it’s a memoir, a business guide, a self-help title, or a thought leadership piece, you’re not alone. Many people feel called to share their story or expertise. But when it comes time to sit down and actually write, they often face a familiar struggle: lack of time, experience, or confidence in writing skills. That’s where a ghostwriter comes in. Hiring a ghostwriter might be the best decision you make on your publishing journey.
Save Time and Energy
Writing a book is a major undertaking. It often takes hundreds of hours of focused writing, revising, and editing. For busy professionals, entrepreneurs, speakers, or anyone juggling a full schedule, that time simply doesn’t exist. A ghostwriter allows you to bring your book to life without needing to carve out months or even years from your calendar. You provide the ideas, insights, and direction, and the ghostwriter does the heavy lifting (with words).
Get a Professional Product
Great ideas deserve great writing. Ghostwriters are experienced professionals who know how to structure content, craft compelling narratives, and engage readers from the first page to the last. Whether you’re aiming for a bestseller, a powerful memoir, or a lead-generating business book, a ghostwriter ensures that your message is clear, polished, and market-ready. The result? A book you can be proud to put your name on. I don’t always take credit for the books that I ghostwrite, meaning, sometimes I am offered a byline from a client, and sometimes not. Every project is different, and every client has a unique set of circumstances. I also ensure full privacy and confidentiality with each client that I work
By Jennifer Walker
with, often offering to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement).
Stay True to Your Voice and Vision
Contrary to popular belief, ghostwriters don’t take over the story- they collaborate with you to express your message authentically. A skilled ghostwriter listens deeply to your voice, asks insightful questions, and works closely with you to make sure the tone, stories, and ideas feel true to who you are. It's still your book, it’s just professionally written. I spend hours interviewing my clients to ensure that I not only tell their stories accurately, but that I also capture their individual voice/way of speaking, turns-of-phrase and conversational tones, emotion and sense of humor. Think about great autobiographies that you have read- what characteristics stand out? When you read those books, you were able to close your eyes and almost hear the author speaking their story aloud. This is the magic that I aim to capture.
Reach Your Goals Faster
Whether your goal is to boost your credibility, grow your brand, inspire others, or leave a legacy, a book is one of the most powerful tools you can use. But it only works if it gets finished. A ghostwriter keeps the project moving forward with structure, deadlines, and momentum. No more stopping and starting. No more half-written manuscripts. With the right collaborator, your book goes from idea to reality, faster and with less frustration.
Focus on What You Do Best
Hiring a ghostwriter lets you stay in your zone of genius. You don’t have to learn the art of storytelling or master the publishing industry. You can focus on your business, your speaking gigs, your creative pursuits, or your personal life while still making meaningful progress on your book. In the end, it’s still your book. Some people hesitate to hire a ghostwriter because they think it’s “cheating” or that it won’t feel like their own work. But the truth is, ghostwriting is a partnership. You bring the ideas, the life experiences, the vision, and the ghostwriter helps you shape it into something powerful, professional, and publishable.
If you’ve been waiting to write your book but haven’t had the time, the confidence, or the right words, now may be the perfect time to bring a ghostwriter into your journey. Your story matters. Let’s make sure it gets told!

The Era of Electromagnetic Radiation In Small Las Vegas
If you’re lucky enough to have Anthony Bondi materialize in front of you, consider yourself a winner! You, my friend, hit the jackpot and will not be going home empty-handed.
Anthony Bondi, known by friends as Tony, is a Las Vegas native, born and raised. His digital collages and staged photography have been widely shown throughout multiple Nevada galleries. For many years he was known for large-scale surreal interactive sculptures at Burning Man. In 2014, Tony was a featured correspondent on the Las Vegas episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. Now, in 2025, Tony has written his long anticipated memoir, Flamingo Wash: The Era of Electromagnetic Radiation In Small Las Vegas. An in-depth narrative of his life, as well as a subcultural chronicle of a constantly evolving Las Vegas. A unique, yet to be told experience perceived through the eyes of an artist who continues to explore everything artistic Sin City has to offer.
There are very few legends left in this world, and even fewer you can befriend. Artists and raconteurs have crawled out from under their red rocks, their rainforest roots, and their warehouse rubble, seeking the historical stories Tony gives out freely. His stories rumble from his chest with all the force of a monsoon, roaring and crackling in surround sound. Stories that have been collected, curated and told to not only entertain, but deliver a bit of knowledge, dare I say it, enlightenment. But enlightenment is like a high desert mirage. It ripples and shimmers so you can see it, but to reach it is a delusion. Nonetheless, Tony has seen it all and has kept pretty damn good notes. Generations of DIY artists, avant-garde psychonauts, passionate poets, gutter punk philosophers, and coffee shop activists, all those who dance on the outer limits and graffiti the establishment, consider Tony Bondi a legend.
His ability to weave sentences together with threads of history, surrealism, comedy and a thick cord of sarcastic criticism is unmatched. He can spin a tale to an enthralled group of people, while at the same time mumbling and giggling a completely different story to himself. Sometimes pulling it off like a ventriloquist, other times fooling no one, which only entertains him more. But where Tony goes above and beyond mere mortals, and why he is so revered by those in the know, is because of his uncontrollable ability to spread kindness.
When Tony materialized in my bookstore, my life changed forever. Tony loves to read and has been doing so feverishly from the day he could pick up a book. He can talk about every art movement known to civilization and at the same time, give you a history lesson as to why the movement was happening and what the political scene was like at the time. Whether it’s cult movies or cults, outlaws or corrupt politicians, revolutionaries or heroines, Tony Bondi has a story to share. As someone who not only loves to tell stories but also hear them, I was immediately enthralled by Tony. Every week or so Tony would pop by and we would drift away into whatever current affair or latest craziness the world was dishing out. Laughing at the insanity until a customer or two would come in. Then Tony would slip out and be gone with the wind.
One day Tony invited me and my wife to his home and gave us the grand tour. Outside, we inspected his interactive Burning Man installations in the back years. Inside, he pulled out unbelievable books to show us and opened draws upon draws full of art. Decades of work that he made and collected. Every book, every work of art, every corner of Tony’s home has a story that goes with it, and if you have the time, Tony will happily share. We sat in his living room, drinking beers, puffing on a joint from time to time, and talking. That was the first of many visits that I have made to sit and talk with Tony, and I plan on having many, many more.
When hard times hit the bookstore, Tony donated boxes of books and magazines. But these weren’t just any books and magazines, these were rare, counter culture, art, and unique books and magazines that happy collectors were more than happy to take off our hands, and pay a premium. This was at a time when we really needed a financial boost, and these books helped keep the doors open. To this day, Tony continues to donate unbelievable books to us.
Tony and I hung out a few nights together at the bookstore murdering books, too. We sat at a table with stacks of books filled with illustrations and photographs in front of us and one by one; we ripped them from their spines and pulled out their paper limbs, discarding their covers like bones and piling up their pretty pictures to be used later at a collage event. Being the collage king, I thought Tony might want to come to the event, or even lead the event, but the only thing Tony wanted to do was murder the books, the rest was beyond him. So murder we committed and let me tell you, it was a massacre. In each book, Tony would find something that would spin him off into a fascinating story about the person, place, or thing. I would find myself laughing hysterically or just sitting in awe as his words roared like a tractor digging up history for me to consume.
When you spend a certain amount of time with someone you thoroughly enjoy, someone who has filled your mind with information and set fire to your imagination, there are so many questions that have been answered. But for this interview, there was really only three questions that I had….
Shwa: So Tony, what inspired you to write Flamingo Wash?
Tony: Why write Flamingo Wash? With few stories told about Las Vegas between the 1940s and 2000, people who live here now can't be faulted for assuming that old Vegas was much like any small US town. But Vegas was an oddity of a town that doubled in size over and over, decade after decade. And what kind of people saw hundreds of atom bombs go off up
By: Shwa Laytart
the road, and never ran away? Shall we assume that their kids never caught some of the fever those people had, or their kids' kids? We may not know where it came from anymore but that oddity is still here. Also true is that anyone with experience of those days could write a story such as I have and their stories would have no overlap with mine.
Shwa: You shared your memories and personal experiences in this book. Was writing Flamingo Wash a cathartic experience?
Tony: The revelation for me was in thinking for the first time about the oddity that as a child I was surrounded by deception. I was taught to trust crooks. I knew it but never thought about it before. The dramatic arc for me in the writing was becoming ever more doubtful about my own memories.
Shwa: What do you foresee being the next underground immersive cultural happenings for the future of Las Vegas art community?
Tony: Underground immersive... The go-to principle here is mucous. Skidoo, miasma. Skedaddle.
Thank you, Tony. This is the answer I was hoping for from a surreal radiated artist who has spent more time under the High Desert sun than the rest of us.

WHEN THE MEDICINE BECOMES THE MASTER
The blurry line between healing and harm.
Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical advice. If you or someone you know is struggling with ketamine or substance use, please consult a licensed medical professional.
Earlier this year, I wrote about my experience at a ketamine retreat, complete with guided journeys, meditation, waterfall hikes, and yoga. Ketamine cracked something open in me. It softened pain I didn’t know I was still holding onto. It made space for the grief, clarity, and relief I’d been chasing for years. But that wasn’t the end of the story.
A few weeks later, I found myself using ketamine more frequently. First to maintain the glow. Then to cope with stress. And eventually, just to feel normal again.
Somewhere along the way, slowly but quietly, I crossed a line.
When the Red Flags Start to Feel Familiar
The first thing I noticed was the brain fog, and soon, I felt unfocused more often than not. Then came the feeling that I was living in dull colors. Everything lost a bit of its texture, and at first, I blamed it on age, stress, and menopause. Soon after, I started noticing that I needed to urinate much more frequently, a tell-tale sign of the bladder dysfunction that comes with increased ketamine use.
But deep down, I knew what was going on. As a former alcohol addict of nearly 30 years, my body was sounding the alarm, again. I had two choices: confront the truth, or face the very real and possibly permanent damage I was already doing.
Let’s drop the stigma and get real for a second, because if we’re not willing to have honest conversations about how powerful medicines can also become dangerous patterns, then we’ve missed the point of healing altogether.
Ketamine Addiction Doesn’t Always Look Like Addiction
That’s the hard part. Addiction to ketamine is sneaky, and in some ways more dangerous than other substances because it’s often masked as healing work. It often hides behind therapy language and wellness packaging. People don’t see themselves as addicted. They see themselves as “doing the work.”
You might tell yourself:
• “I’m doing inner child healing.”
• “This helps me cope with anxiety and depression.”
• “I need this to access my emotions.”
• “Ketamine is doctor-prescribed, so it’s safe.”
If you’re using ketamine to escape your life, not face it, then the medicine has become the master, and you’ve given your power away.
The Physical Damage Is Real, and Often Irreversible
Licensed ketamine providers instruct patients to take their dose 1-2 times per week, but many people are abusing the substance daily, and at that frequency, ketamine can cause lasting harm, especially when warning signs are ignored.
Documented risks include:
• Ketamine-Induced Cystitis, which causes constant urgency, pelvic pain, and in extreme cases, irreversible bladder shrinkage that requires surgery. Some users lose their bladder completely.
• Cognitive Impairment, which means memory issues, difficulty focusing, and emotional dullness, often mistaken as the side effects of aging, burnout, or menopause.
• Cardiovascular Strain, in the form of elevated blood pressure and heart rate, as well as an increased risk of stroke or heart events.
• Organ Stress. Liver and kidneys carry the burden, especially when use is frequent or mixed with alcohol or medications.
• Psychological Dependence. It’s not just about craving a high, it’s about slowly forgetting how to cope without it.
If you’re wondering if it’s happening to you or someone you love, here are some signs to look out for:
• Someone who was once calm and grounded is now irritable or foggy.
• Constant bathroom trips and disrupted sleep.
• Increased dosing, paired with denial that anything’s wrong.
• Combining substances to chase the high.
• A subtle disconnection from life, people, and even joy.
And in the wellness world, it’s easy to miss, because it’s wrapped in language that sounds intentional, therapeutic, or spiritual. And I’m speaking from personal experience.
This Medicine Requires Honesty
To be clear: ketamine therapy can be a game-changer. When used under proper medical supervision and integrated with real therapeutic support, it’s helped countless people break through treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and chronic anxiety. For some, it’s the first thing that’s worked after years of trying everything else. That’s not just valid. It’s life-saving.
However, this medicine requires honesty with yourself, with your therapist, and with the doctor prescribing it. If you’re considering ketamine therapy, or are already using it, this isn’t about shame or fear. It’s about staying grounded and aware.
If you have a history of addiction, dissociation, or compulsive behaviors, bring that to the table from the beginning. If you start feeling like you need a session to get through your week, say something.
What I Did Next
Once I recognized the signs of dependency, I contacted my primary care provider. I told her everything: my symptoms, my concerns, my dosage. Together, we decided to run a full panel of blood work.
The results came back with a dangerously abnormal marker, something that could be connected to my ketamine use. We don’t know for certain, but the warning was enough to shake me.
That lab report was my wake-up call. I needed to get honest with myself, fast. And I needed to change the direction I was heading in.
The story could’ve gone another way. But I chose the truth, again.
And that truth cleared the fog. Not instantly, but enough to see the next steps forward—to not just stop, but to start replacing. Because healing isn’t just about what you leave behind. It’s about what you build in its place.
Replace & Redirect
Cravings don’t just disappear. They demand a destination.
As a former addict, I knew that if I quit ketamine without replacing it with something else, I would just create a void. And voids don’t stay empty for long. The old loop can sneak back in a different form.
So I didn’t just stop. I redirected. I traded the pattern for something that served my body, mind, and heart better: learning two new skills: one for my body (weightlifting) and another for my bank account (building wealth with real estate). Being obsessed with learning new skills is the same strategy I’ve used to walk away from sugar, from alcohol, and from spirals of self-sabotage.
What worked for me may also work for you. Instead of white-knuckling
By
through temptation, focus on retraining your nervous system to find safety, reward, and regulation in something healthier and more productive. Instead of breaking a bad habit or pattern by fighting harder, build something stronger in its place that actually serves you.
Healing with ketamine is possible, but it has to start with clarity, not self-deception. And that means checking in with yourself regularly and making sure you’re still choosing the medicine… instead of the medicine choosing you.

Healing vs. Remembering
Why do I still have these old loops?
You may be hearing this word a lot lately…LOOPS. There are many people stuck in the loop of healing. What exactly does this mean? Let’s open this gently, there is no judgement, only observation and invitation. In the paradigm of healing, let us first acknowledge that there is a deep inner feeling that something is “wrong”, that we are “broken” and need fixing. We are as a collective, not enough, unworthy, unlovable; all the things.
We traverse the range of modalities from traditional therapy, psychedelics, energy healing, sound therapy, meditation, and all things in between. These are wonderful ways to heal.
As I have personally journeyed in the psychedelic world for over ten years, one thing is for sure: revelations, visions and bliss are something to explore. The integration of these big events are so critical to actually closing these loops. Who helps with this? How does it work when you return from the jungle after sitting with Ayahuasca for days and your heart and consciousness are blown wide open? How do we feel so good after the sound bath and the Reiki and then return once again to our loops?
Our loops are the prisoners of our mind that keep us feeling charged about the past. When we allow it to infiltrate our present moment, whether it’s our scarcity/lack loop, it’s still there. Why? Because we haven’t crossed the very threshold of our essence…the remembering. When we “innerstand” that we were never broken, when we remember that we are perfect, whole and complete, and we can allow those old thoughts to pass like a lazy river. We minimize the charge in the field by the process of remembering.
I know this to be possible through the field of Temple Radiance, where people come home to their essence. There is an original blueprint within you; the one assigned when you were still starlight. If you feel stuck in your loop, know this- you are not broken and there is a frequency deep within you waiting to be remembered. It's the frequency of your “unbrokenness”.

What's the Tea on: Lion’s Mane Mushroom
The statements in this editorial are simply for informational purposes, entertainment, and objective research and do not represent the views or policies of the publication, or any other organization with which the author may be affiliated. Since my teas and focus are on high tech healing and the wonders of nature (mainly in the form of herbs) it’s very important to mention the fungi kingdom, which is a high tech functioning system. The fungi kingdom is one of nature’s most essential- and least understoodlifeforms. There are a whole range of mushrooms with some basically miraculous effects, while others can be quite toxic. However I would like to first introduce you to the value of this underground network as it globally impacts our food and herbs. The hidden heroes of this kingdom are called myceliumthe intricate underground networks of fungal threads that connect ecosystems like an organic internet. Think of it like a web that connects soil and roots deep, far, and wide. Mycelium wraps around and penetrates plant roots, forming mycorrhizal relationships that help plants absorb water, minerals, and nutrients far more efficiently. In return, plants supply fungi with sugars produced through photosynthesis since fungi do not absorb light from the sun and instead work underground breaking down organic matter. This symbiotic relationship not only enhances the health and resilience of trees and herbs, but it also improves the potency of medicinal plants by optimizing their nutrient uptake and soil environment. In essence, mycelium weaves together entire plant communities, making the fungi kingdom a silent architect of both forest health and herbal vitality.
Mushrooms) a strange and beautiful fungus clings to the trunks of hardwood trees. It doesn’t look anything like your typical mushroom as it doesn’t sprout a stem or cap like most mushrooms; it’s a globe of silky white spines. Lion’s Mane mushrooms have soft, icicle-like hairs, formed and round, fluffy mass that resembles the mane of a lion, a pop-pom, or even an oddly misplaced white jellyfish. If you look at it hard enough you might see the resemblance of a brain, which quite frankly is its main benefit. Lion’s Mane mushroom is no longer hiding in the woods or in the pages of ancient herbal scrolls. Backed by promising science and supported by centuries of traditional use, this shaggy mushroom is becoming a staple for those seeking ways to sharpen their mind, lift their mood, and protect their health.
Royal and Keen like a Lion
In traditional Chinese medicine, Lion’s Mane was reserved for royalty. It was considered a tonic for the mind and spirit, known for sharpening the senses and calming the heart. Monks brewed into teas, believing it enhanced focus and meditative clarity. Fast forward to today, and the mushroom’s legend is finding new footing in labs and research centers which are confirming its effects on everything from
neurodegenerative diseases to anxiety and inflammation.
So knowing this, I will now get into the tea on one of a very well studied mushroom called Lion’s Mane. It is used in our ‘Eye Know’ tea, which if you read last month, is packed with herbs that support brain health, memory, and longevity. Hericium erinaceous has captured the attention of scientists, herbalists, chefs, and everyday wellness seekers around the world!
through Desert Moon
The power of Lion’s Mane lies in its compounds, particularly hericenones and erinacines. These aren't just fun to try to pronounce; they are biologically significant. Hericenones are found in the fruiting body (the part you see above ground) while erinacines are concentrated in the mycelium (the underground network). Both of these compounds have one remarkable function: they stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a molecule critical for growth, repair, and survival of neurons. This makes Lion’s Mane unique. Most plants of fungi don’t affect NGF, but Lion’s Mane appears to enhance its production in the brain and throughout the nervous system, with some studies showing it to reverse effects from diseases such as Alzeheimers.
Brain Powered Peace
Animal studies have shown it to regenerate damaged nerves, reduce brain inflammation, and even improve memory and learning. A Japanese human study in 2009 published in Phytotherapy Research showed older adults
Deep in the quiet corners of temperate forests (far from the heat of the desert sun, however conveniently grown
with mild cognitive impairment took Lion’s Mane daily for four months, resulting in cognitive test scores improving significantly. The mushrooms potential as a nootropic and brain-enhancer has made it an integrated mushroom in now every day snacks.
However, the benefits do not stop with just brain health and cognition. In another study, menopausal women who consumed cookies baked with Lion’s Mane reported reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression. In animal models, researchers found that erinacine-enriched extract could increase hippocampal neurogenesis, which is the growth of new brain cells in the part of the brain responsible for emotional regulation. Some researchers believe that Lion’s Mane works in part by reducing chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, which are factors closely tied to mood disorders, neurodegeneration, and fatigue.
Lion’s Mane has also demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and even antimicrobial activity. Its polysaccharides, especially β-glucans, support immune function and may improve gut health by protecting the stomach lining from ulcers while modulating gut bacteria. Animal studies have also suggested the mushroom can improve lipid metabolism and help regulate blood sugar, hinting at cardiovascular benefits.
Integrate it Into Your Diet
In the wild, Lion’s Mane fruits in humid conditions during late summer and fall, and is more accessible by mushroom growers as it is an absolutely delicious dish for cooking, as well. Fresh Lion’s Mane has a texture and flavor often compared to crab or lobster. Pan-fried with garlic and butter or battered makes it a savory, succulent treat that’s as much about indulgence as it is about health.
For centuries, Lion’s Mane has held a revered place in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, and now the west has confirmed, it’s not just a remedy, but a powerful symbol of vitality and clarity. You can experience the legacy of this extraordinary fungus for yourself, brew it into our rich ‘Eye Know’ nature rich caffeine free herbal tea blend and take in the ancient strength of one of nature’s legendary healers.

Burdock Root: The Blood Purifier & Skin Healer You Need Now
With its earthy aroma and deep roots stretching into the soil — both physically and symbolically — burdock root (Arctium lappa) has been treasured in folk medicine for centuries. Known as a master detoxifier, this humble root helps cleanse the blood, support the liver, and calm inflammatory skin conditions from the inside out.
Whether brewed as a tea, taken as a tincture, or added to nourishing herbal blends, burdock root offers gentle yet powerful support for everyday wellness.
The Healing Benefits of Burdock Root
Why Burdock Belongs in Your Wellness Routine
Blood Purifier – Burdock is traditionally used to detoxify the blood and lymphatic system, helping to eliminate toxins and waste from the body.
Liver Support – A gentle liver stimulant, burdock root aids in bile production and supports the liver’s natural detox pathways.
Skin Healer – Used for centuries to clear acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rashes, burdock helps heal the skin by addressing internal inflammation and toxicity.
Anti-Inflammatory – Naturally reduces swelling and inflammation, especially helpful for joint pain and chronic skin issues.
Digestive Aid – Contains inulin, a prebiotic fiber that supports gut health and nourishes beneficial bacteria.
Hormone Balance – Burdock may support hormone detoxification, making it useful during menstrual or menopausal transitions.
While burdock root is generally safe, it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to its potential to stimulate the uterus. Those with diabetes or on diuretics should use caution, as it may lower blood sugar and increase urination. If you’re allergic to daisies, ragweed, or chrysanthemums, you may be sensitive to burdock. Always consult with a qualified healthcare provider before beginning any new herbal regimen.
Tapping into your herbalist spirit is easy with this simple recipe. Get ready to infuse some serious plant wisdom into your daily wellness routine!

The Vacation We Really Need >>> ESCAPING VS. HEALING
As we enter the dog days of summer, vacations are on everyone's mind. We are halfway through the year, and our New Year's goals might be burnt as our sunburn, or maybe we just need a break from constantly pushing ourselves to the max. Whichever camp you fall into, both shout from the rooftops: "I need a vacation!"
Vacations are much-needed and a great way to recharge our batteries, make memories, and have fun. However, before we book that vacation, we must ask ourselves one important question: are we recharging or running away from our problems?
Vacations are often considered the perfect cure for whatever ails us in life. For example, if we feel like we are getting burned out at work, the suggestion is to book a trip and go on vacation. If you find yourself heartbroken, the suggestion is to take an adventure. If you feel stuck in a rut, change the scenery and travel. If you have relationship problems, the suggestion is to go to a retreat. The common theme is to leave, yet our problems and issues still accompany us when we reach baggage claim.
I was born in Indiana, and summers consisted of spending two weeks with my grandparents or attending summer camp. When I was seven, my parents packed up their travel trailer, and I grabbed a few toys, thinking we were heading out west for a short family vacation. Unbeknownst to me, I would never return home. Somewhere during those two weeks filled with swimming and fun, my parents made a spontaneous, life-altering decision: we were moving from the Midwest to bask in the Las Vegas sun.
would carry forever."
By Steven Dee Kish
Instead of running away from their problems, my parents should have leaned into healing. No amount of sunblock and cocktails fixes our problems. They were seeking temporary relief rather than focusing on genuine healing. Temporary relief is like slapping on a band-aid and hoping the wound heals itself. Because when the vacation ends, the same unanswered questions and concerns will remain.
Temporary relief is a distraction. Healing is making the hard choice. Temporary relief is laughing and enjoying dinner in a new city. Healing is finding the right therapist to treat the root cause of a problem. Temporary relief is a getaway. Healing is getting honest with yourself. The main problem is that healing isn't fun; it's work. Yet, it has so many benefits down the road. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars and scrolling through social media in a hammock, we can stop, pause, and think about improving our lives instead of sunbathing for two weeks. This could be creating boundaries with people who test our mental health. Opening up our emotional baggage and making peace with issues that we have buried for years. It could also be a way to seek closure from the people who have wronged us in life. While swimming with the dolphins sounds much better, doing any of these things is more worthwhile.
At the end of two weeks, I was caught up in a whirlwind of my parents making quick, life-changing choices. My environment was flipped upside down. My extended family was now gone, and I never got to say goodbye to my friends. My childhood home and belongings vanished as I watched my parents sell the travel trailer and enroll me in school. Dad left to sell the house while Mom and I slept on the floor in a cheap apartment complex that housed my future abusers.
By winter, the house didn't sell, and Mom refused to return to Indiana. A divorce was on the horizon, and I felt like I was human luggage. That spontaneous vacation became a "forever vacation," one that left me with deep mental health scars and taught me far too early the painful truth about nature versus nurture. It wasn't until my 40s that I fully understood that my "forever vacation" wasn't a new beginning; it was my parents running from their problems. But the trauma/issues they tried to escape from became my problem, and it planted seeds of unresolved trauma I
It's not that vacations are bad. In fact, taking a break can be a beautiful part of your wellness routine. The key to any vacation is not WHERE we go but WHY we are going. Vacations offer a few days of freedom and temporary relief from life's pressures; however, we must remember that vacations are pauses, and sometimes, that is precisely what we need, but it won't be the cure for our problems.
If you decide on a staycation, focus on reflection, rest, and reconnecting with yourself. Reconnecting with ourselves allows us to take inventory of our past, present, and future. That doesn't mean you shouldn't travel or enjoy your summer. But try asking yourself: What do I want to achieve with this vacation? Because once you know the answer, you can decide if you need a vacation or a breakthrough. The reality is that many people (including myself) return from vacation exhausted more than when they left. Just have an honest exchange with yourself; don't feel pressured or worry about judgment from others. If you're tired, let yourself truly rest. If you're hurting emotionally, give yourself space to heal. Just be honest. Don't wait for a flight to fix everything. Maybe the vacation you really need is the one that brings you back home to you.
