Let’s take a moment to look at the federal scheduling of cannabis. According to the DEA’s website, “Schedule I drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” Substances classified as Schedule I include heroin, LSD, cannabis, ecstasy, methaqualone and peyote. This classification insinuates that cannabis is considered as dangerous as heroin, and has no medical value. Ironically, the US Department of Health and Human Services holds Patent No. 6,630,507 titled “Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants.” Now, let’s look at the other classifications which the DEA considers less harmful than cannabis. A Schedule II classification is described by the DEA as “drugs, substances, or chemicals with a high potential for abuse, with use potentially leading to severe psychological or physical dependence." Schedule II substances include Vicodin, cocaine, methamphetamine, methadone, Dilaudid, Demerol, OxyContin, fentanyl, Dexedrine, Adderall and Ritalin. Now, Schedule III substances are defined as having a "moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence." Substances classified as Schedule III include Tylenol with codeine, ketamine, anabolic steroids, and testosterone. And, Schedule IV substances which the DEA defines as "having a low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence," include Xanax, Soma, Darvocet, Valium, Ativan, Ambien and Tramadol. Many of us have witnessed the healing powers of cannabis. In many instances, cannabis is a safer alternative to pharmaceuticals. Cannabis has the ability to stop seizures, treat cancer, manage pain and reduce anxiety. But, the DEA states that cannabis is far more dangerous than opioids, methamphetamine and anti-anxiety drugs. People are dying at record rates from overdosing on dangerous pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by licensed physicians to treat pain and anxiety. Yet, there have been no recorded overdose deaths solely from cannabis. And again, the federal government who continues to enforce the illegalities of cannabis, holds a patent relating to the medical use of this plant as a neuroprotectant. VEGAS CANNABIS: "I Got 5 On It" was released back in 1995. When you originally performed it, did you think it would become the weed anthem it is today? YUKMOUTH: When we first made “I Got 5 On It” we knew it would be a local hit, but never thought it would be an international anthem ...we made a WEED CLASSIC. VEGAS CANNABIS: Do you consume marijuana for medical purposes? Or, is your consumption strictly recreational? Do you have a favorite strain and method of consumption? YUKMOUTH: I have consumed medical marijuana since it became legal in Oakland back in the early 2000’s. My favorite flavor is my own strain called Kool-Latto, a partnership with Gas Co. which is an LA based medical cannabis service. It’s the next level Gelato. VEGAS CANNABIS: Do you live in a state where marijuana is legal? What are your thoughts on legalization and the impact it has on those already incarcerated for marijuana related offenses? YUKMOUTH: I love the legalization of marijuana. I'm a pothead so it’s better for me. As far as incarceration, it’s great that they are letting Mary Jane offenders out of prison and giving them a chance in the California marijuana community. It’s looking good all around ya dig, gotta love it. VEGAS CANNABIS: What can we expect from you musically in the near future? YUKMOUTH: Well, me and C-BO are working on our new Thuglordz album which is dropping the first quarter of 2019. Then, after that I'll drop my next solo album called Elegant Thug dropping spring 2019. Finally, the Luniz new album Operation Stackola 2 drops next summer so I got a lot on the table coming from Smoke-A-Lot Records in 2019. Stay tuned... VEGAS CANNABIS: Your thoughts on Las Vegas? t doesn’t get you high, but it’s causing quite a buzz among medical scientists and patients. The past year has seen a surge of interest in cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating cannabis compound with significant therapeutic properties. Numerous commercial start-ups and internet retailers have jumped on the CBD bandwagon, touting CBD derived from industrial hemp as the next big thing, a miracle oil that can shrink tumors, quell seizures, and ease chronic pain—without making people feel “stoned.” But along with a growing awareness of cannabidiol as a potential health aid there has been a proliferation of misconceptions about CBD.

1. “CBD is medical. THC is recreational.” Project CBD

receives many inquiries from around the world and oftentimes people say they are seeking “CBD, the medical part” of the plant, “not THC, the recreational part” that gets you high. Actually, THC, “The High Causer,” has awesome therapeutic properties. Scientists at the Scripps Research Center in San Diego reported that THC inhibits an enzyme implicated in the formation of beta amyloid plaque, the hallmark of Alzheimer’s-related dementia. The federal government recognizes single-molecule THC (Marinol) as an anti-nausea compound and appetite booster, deeming it a Schedule III pharmaceutical, a category reserved for drugs with little abuse potential. But whole plant cannabis, which is the only natural source of THC, continues to be classified as a dangerous Schedule I drug with no medical value.

2. “THC is the bad cannabinoid. CBD is the good

cannabinoid.” The drug warrior’s strategic retreat: Give ground

on CBD while continuing to demonize THC. Diehard marijuana prohibitionists are exploiting the good news about CBD to further stigmatize high-THC cannabis, casting tetrahydrocannabinol as the bad cannabinoid, whereas CBD is framed as the good cannabinoid. Why? Because CBD doesn’t make you feel high like THC does. Project CBD categorically rejects this moralistic, reefer madness dichotomy in favor of whole plant cannabis therapeutics. 3. “CBD is most effective without THC.” THC and CBD

are the power couple of cannabis compounds—they work best together. Scientific studies have established that CBD and THC interact synergistically to enhance each other’s therapeutic effects. British researchers have shown that CBD potentiates THC’s antiinflammatory properties in an animal model of colitis. Scientists at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco determined that a combination of CBD and THC has a more potent anti-tumoral effect than either compound alone when tested on brain cancer and breast cancer cell lines. And extensive clinical research has demonstrated that CBD combined with THC is more beneficial for neuropathic pain than either compound as a single molecule.

4. “Single-molecule pharmaceuticals are superior to

‘crude’ whole plant medicinals.” According to the federal government, specific components of the marijuana plant (THC, CBD) have medical value, but the plant itself does not have medical value. Uncle Sam’s single-molecule blinders reflect a cultural and political bias that privileges Big Pharma products. Single-molecule medicine is the predominant corporate way, the FDA-approved way, but it’s not the only way, and it’s not necessarily the optimal way to benefit from cannabis therapeutics. Cannabis contains several hundred compounds, including various flavonoids, aromatic terpenes, and many minor cannabinoids in addition to THC and CBD. Each of these compounds has specific healing attributes, but when combined they create what scientists refer to as a holistic “entourage effect” or “ensemble effect,” so that the therapeutic impact of the whole plant is greater than the sum of its single-molecule parts. The Food and Drug Administration, however, isn’t in the business of approving plants as medicine. (See the scientific evidence.)

5. “CBD is not psychoactive.” CBD is not an intoxicant, but it’s misleading to describe CBD as non-psychoactive. When a clinically depressed patient takes a low dose of a CBD-rich sublingual spray or tincture and has a great day for the first time in a long time, it’s apparent that CBD is a powerful mood-altering compound. Better to

>>> say, “CBD is not psychoactive like THC,” than to simply assert that CBD is not psychoactive. CBD won’t make a person feel stoned, but it can impact a person’s psyche in positive ways. Moderate doses of CBD are mildly energizing (“alerting”). But very high doses of CBD may trigger a biphasic effect and can be sleep-promoting. If CBD-rich cannabis flower confers a sedating effect, it’s likely because of a myrcene-rich terpene profile. Myrcene is a terpene with sedative and pain killing properties. CBD is not a sedative.

6. “Psychoactivity is inherently an adverse side effect.”

According to politically correct drug war catechism, the marijuana high is an unwanted side effect. Big Pharma is keen on synthesizing medically active marijuana-like molecules that don’t make people high—although it’s not obvious why mild euphoric feelings are intrinsically negative for a sick person or a healthy person, for that matter. In ancient Greece, the word euphoria meant “having health,” a state of well-being. The euphoric qualities of cannabis, far from being an unwholesome side effect, are deeply implicated in the therapeutic value of the plant. “We should be thinking of cannabis as a medicine first,” said Dr. Tod Mikuriya, “that happens to have some psychoactive properties, as many medicines do, rather than as an intoxicant that happens to have a few therapeutic properties on the side.”

7. “High doses of CBD work better than than low doses.” CBD isolates require higher doses to be effective than whole plant CBD-rich extracts. But that doesn’t mean single-molecule CBD is a better therapeutic option than CBD-rich cannabis, which has a wider therapeutic window than an isolate. Reports from clinicians and patients suggest that a synergistic combination of CBD, THC, and other cannabis components can be effective at low doses – as little as 2.5 mg CBD and/or 2.5 mg THC. Some patients may require significantly higher doses to obtain satisfactory results. Keep in mind that CBD and THC and cannabis in general have biphasic properties, meaning that low and high doses can produce opposite effects. An excessive amount of CBD could be less effective therapeutically than a moderate dose.

“CBD converts to THC in a person’s stomach.” Orally administered CBD is well-tolerated in humans. But concerns about possible harmful side effects, which might limit CBD’s therapeutic utility and market potential, were raised by misleading reports that CBD converts to high-causing THC in the stomach. It does not (read the evidence). There have been extensive clinical trials demonstrating that ingested CBD—even doses above 600 mg—does not cause THC-like psychoactive effects. (On the contrary, CBD in sufficient amounts can lessen or neutralize the THC high.) The World Health Organization studied the issue and gave CBD a clean bill of health in a 2017 report that asserted: “Simulated gastric fluid does not exactly replicate physiological conditions in the stomach [and] spontaneous conversation of CBD to delta-9-THC has not been demonstrated in humans undergoing CBD treatment.”

9. “Legalizing CBD, but not cannabis, adequately

serves the patient population.” Nineteen U.S. states have enacted “CBD only” (or, better said, “low THC” or “no THC”) laws. And 28 states have legalized medical marijuana (not just CBD) in one form or another. Some states restrict the sources of CBD-rich products and specify the diseases for which CBD can be accessed; others do not. But a CBD-rich remedy with little THC doesn’t work for everyone. Parents of epileptic children have found that adding some THC (or THCA, the raw, unheated version of THC) helps with seizure control. For some epileptics, THC-dominant products are more effective than CBD-rich products. Most patients are not well served by CBD-only laws. They need access to a broad spectrum of whole plant cannabis remedies, not just low THC medicine. One size doesn’t fit all with respect to cannabis therapeutics, and neither does one compound or one product or one strain. (Read more: Prohibition’s Last Gasp: “CBD Only”)

“Marijuana prohibition doesn’t apply to CBD. CBD is federally legal if it comes from the seed or stalk of hemp.”

Nice try, but CBD can’t be pressed or extracted from hempseed. CBD can be extracted from the flower tops, leaves, and, only to a very minor extent (if at all) from the stalk of the hemp plant. Hemp oil companies lack credibility when they say their CBD comes from hempseed and stalk. Congress may soon vote to exempt industrial hemp and CBD from the definition of “marihuana” under the Controlled Substances Act. (CSA). Until that happens, cannabis prohibition remains the law of the land, federally speaking. We can’t interpret our way out of the Controlled Substances Act; it must be abolished. Rooted in reefer madness racism and enforced disproportionately against people of color, marijuana prohibition is akin to the Confederate statue still standing – a testament to enduring bigotry and chronic social injustice.

11. “CBD is CBD—It doesn’t matter where it comes from.” Some low resin industrial hemp cultivars may be a feasible source of CBD, but fiber hemp is by no means an optimal source of CBD. Industrial hemp typically contains far less cannabidiol than CBD-rich cannabis flower tops (marijuana). Huge amounts of industrial hemp are required to extract a small amount of CBD, thereby raising the risk of contaminants because hemp is a “bio-accumulator” that draws toxins from the soil. But the debate over sourcing CBD is quickly becoming moot, as plant breeders focus on developing high-resin cannabis varietals (marijuana) that satisfy the legal criteria for industrial hemp – with THC measuring less than 0.3 percent and CBD levels exceeding 10 percent by dry weight. Meanwhile, “pure” CBD synthesized in a lab or extracted and refined from industrial hemp lacks critical medicinal terpenes and other plant compounds that interact with CBD and THC to enhance their therapeutic benefit. erpenes give cannabis that distinctive aroma. You know the aroma we’re talking about…from pineapple, watermelon, blueberry, skunky and earthy scents like pine or mint, terpenes aid in the enjoyment and experience of using cannabis. The glands that produce cannabinoids like THC and CBD also secrete terpenes. These oils give cannabis its flavor profile. Terpenes were developed in cannabis in order to keep predators at bay while also providing an attractive aroma in which to entice pollinating insects. Weather, soil conditions, age and climate all play a role in how terpenes develop in various strains of cannabis. So far, well over one hundred variations of terpenes have been discovered in the cannabis plant. Terpenes each have a specific type and makeup that is related to specific strains of cannabis. An example of this would be a particular strain and its offshoots will all have the same fragrance profile, or at the very least, a flavor that is in the same vein. Terpenes interact with other composites in the cannabis plant, such as cannabinoids. Strains which have been bred to contain higher levels of THC, may have reduced levels of other cannabinoids in their profiles. Because of this, there is a belief that terpenes are more important in discerning subtleties between cannabis specimens. Terpenes have individual effects that are uniquely specific. One type may elevate your mood, another might encourage deep relaxation or even induce sleep. Terpenes can add great depth to the botanic creativity of cultivating and enjoying cannabis. Also, terpenes assist in our body’s capacity to receive the medicinal benefits of cannabinoids, and they make the experience that much more enjoyable.

Limonene is one of the more prevalent types of terpene. With a citrus aroma, limonene aids in the treatment of depression and anxiety, can help reduce gastric reflux, assists in the absorption of cannabinoids via the digestive system (much like a lemon aperitif before a meal) and provides a general relief of stress. Lemons are light and sunny, and similarly, limonene elevates the mood and promotes a feeling of wellness. Another happy side effect of limonene is its antifungal and antibacterial properties. Think about the use of lemon as a base for cleaning, for detoxifying and freshening- the concept is the same. Limonene occurs in smaller, trace amounts of a cannabis flower’s composition. Mainly appearing in strains of sativa, there are some indica strains that do feature this terpene as well. If you’ve ever encountered specific strains that take on that pine or citrusy type of fragrance, you’re more than likely in the presence of limonene. The reaction is one of pure bliss, calm, happiness and all the therapeutic benefits of limonene rolled into a pleasant aroma. Limonene works to help reduce the feelings of paranoia that THC can sometimes produce. It also aids in assisting the body in fighting cancer and other diseases. You can enjoy limonene by selecting strains that have high levels in their composition. However, you can also reap the benefits of limonene by using terpene extracts that can be added to cannabis infused body products, since this terpene has a high absorption rate through the skin. Cannabis dabs can also be treated with limonene before usage for added benefit. Dearest Mary Jane, I have been smoking flower marijuana since it became legal here in the valley. However, all of the menus that I look at online offer many more THC products than just flower. What is the difference in strength and benefits between edibles and concentrates, and what is with the THC suppositories that I've seen advertised? Am I missing something here? -Love, Adventurous Dear Adventurous, Thank you for your lovely letter! I am always happy to share what I know about the world of marijuana, and you have broached an interesting topic! Back in my day, also known as the dim, dead 70s, leaf marijuana was pretty much all that was available. I really cannot speak to THC levels or anything like that, because we just didn't know. I've read that 70s weed might have topped out at 12% THC, but I have no intention of going back to the 70s to verify that because bell bottoms and platform shoes still give me nightmares. If you hung out with really, really cool people, you might have encountered some hashish. Compared to the flower product, it was much stronger, but I still doubt it got much over 40% THC. The important thing was that it got us high, and sometimes I think that is forgotten--more THC does not necessarily make for a better experience. You mentioned edibles. Edibles are a wonderful way of consuming THC without having to smoke it. Eaten THC also can have a different effect on your body then if it is smoked, especially if you eat too much. My issues with edibles have to do with strength and the time it takes to be metabolized by your body. Everybody is different, and a 20 mg brownie will likely hit you, a rook, harder than it would an old stoner like me. On the other hand, if you have time and patience (two things that I am profoundly lacking), you can tailor your dose according to what makes you happy. Find a medium that you like, be it brownies, Gummy Bears, or any of the million other THC edible that are out 30

there, and experiment with dosing 5 mg per hour. Eventually, you will determine what your optimum dose is, making it much less likely that you will eat too much and overdose. It is not a good feeling. Concentrates are just what they sound like: concentrated THC, and (like edibles) they come in many, many forms. Lately, it seems like everybody is in love with dabbing. This consists of placing a measure of concentrate on a superheated nail and inhaling the resulting fumes. Would you like an idea what dabbing is like? There are literally thousands of dabbing videos on YouTube, and that might be a good place to start. I have never tried it myself, because the proximity of me to a blowtorch will likely earn me another visit from Clark County's finest, and they don't like me very much (see last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s column). Let us not kid one another: the biggest difference between flower and edibles/concentrates is the effect that they are likely to have on you. Edibles create more of a body high, one that lasts much longer than just smoking flower does--four to eight hours seems to be about right, in my experience. If you take a hit or two off of a dab rig, it is not uncommon to lose the power of thought/speech/reality for a while. If this is what you are after, great. Personally, I always like to leave a little something for the next level. You know what I mean? And as far as THC suppositories are concerned, they are generally used by people going through chemotherapy who cannot keep anything in their stomach, yet want to reap the benefits of THC. The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers

Public Service Announcement: Please don’t leave your kids alone in the car, or unattended outside, while you shop at the dispensary. As a matter of fact, don’t do it anywhere you go! I have heard a few stories recently that involve young children being alone in their parent’s car out in the parking lot while said parent was almost certainly inside stocking up for Munchie Monday, Terps-y Tuesday, Wax Wednesday, or whatever witty day it may have been. Not only is this probably illegal (depending on the age of the child – see below), but it is dangerous and downright stupid. Seriously. It is still hot in Nevada no matter the time of year, and dispensaries aren’t always located in the safest of areas. You are just asking for your kid to “accidentally” do something to cause either themselves or someone else harm. Or worse yet, someone else could cause harm to your child if you just leave them chillin’ on their own. NRS 202.485 makes it a misdemeanor in most scenarios to leave a young child unattended in a vehicle if the vehicle is running, or if the child is at a “risk of harm” (e.g. excessive heat): NRS 202.485 Leaving child unattended in motor vehicle […] 1. A parent, legal guardian or other person responsible for a child who is 7 years of age or younger shall not knowingly and intentionally leave that child in a motor vehicle if: (a) The conditions present a significant risk to the health and safety of the child; or (b) The engine of the motor vehicle is running or the keys to the vehicle are in the ignition, unless the child is being supervised by and within the sight of a person who is at least 12 years of age.

And if the child gets harmed, or if the authorities feel the circumstances justify it (even without harm), you could end up getting charged with Child Endangerment, a felony. The moral of the story? DON’T leave your kids in the car to make a quick trip into the dispensary. It’s not worth it! Go a different day or time when you aren’t taking care of your kids. Or better yet, take advantage of one of the many (legal) delivery options available. Whatever you do, please be a responsible parent and don’t bring your child to the dispensary. Nevada is riding high; we don’t need anything giving us a bad name and holding us back. Speaking of riding high, the final sales numbers for Nevada’s first year of adult-use cannabis are in, and as expected, they exceeded expectations across the board. In the first year since Nevada legalized recreational use of cannabis for adults, the total taxable sales of cannabis amounted to a whopping $529.9 million. Or put a different way, over half a billion dollars! Of the funds generated from cannabis sales, $42.5 Million went to the state’s “Rainy Day” Fund while $27.5 Million went to an account designated to benefit Nevada’s public school system. In this first year, only 20% of all cannabis purchased was purchased by medical marijuana cardholders, while 80% of the cannabis purchased was by non-cardholders. Yet, I don’t believe this ratio is truly representative of those in Nevada using cannabis recreationally as opposed to those using it medically. The unfortunate truth is that many medical users don’t really realize

or understand the benefits associated with having a medical card and opt to just forego getting for one. I advise anyone who truly uses cannabis medically to go ahead and get a medical marijuana card – it’s truly worth it. Not only do you save on cost (less taxes), but at a lot of dispensaries you will get through the lines (if you have to wait in line at all) and be enjoying your product faster than recreational users. Not to mention, the amount you can legally possess as a medical cardholder is much more than as a recreational user (2 ½ ounces versus 1 ounce). I guess if I’m going to be talking about “riding high,” now would be a good time to remind everyone DO NOT CONSUME CANNABIS AND GET BEHIND THE WHEEL. There have been a couple of DUI arrests in Las Vegas the past few weeks that involved fatal accidents allegedly caused by someone driving while high. While it is still not known whether cannabis truly had a hand in causing these accidents, it is a somber reminder that we all need to be careful. These things can and should be avoided. If you are going to consume cannabis, be smart and don’t drive anywhere. Soon, cannabis consumers will be able to legally park themselves in cannabis consumption lounges within the Las Vegas city limits. I wrote about some of the key aspects of the City of Las Vegas’s proposed ordinance authorizing cannabis consumption lounges in Cannab-Esq. Chronicles #12 (Vegas Cannabis Magazine, Issue #47 – August 2018), and I am excited that city officials have been pushing forward with the assistance and input of those in the industry as well as the public at large. Although, not everybody is so ecstatic about the city’s plans. The Nevada Resort Association recently sent a letter to City of Las Vegas officials asking that they reconsider, citing the “unique challenges” the lounges would create for nearby casinos, and delay taking action “until further information is available from other jurisdictions.” Despite the recent opposition from the Nevada Resort Associates, city councilman Bob Coffin expects city officials to vote on the ordinance in late October or early November. It is imperative that Las Vegas approve the proposed ordinance (or at least a version of it) sooner rather than later. We are in the unique position, and city, to take something like cannabis consumption lounges and make them thrive. There is big money in marijuana. Point in fact: Constellation Brands, the owner of Corona, recently invested $3.8 Billion in cannabis company Canopy Growth, signaling its entry into the cannabis market with a blow-horn. Nevada needs to continue doing what its doing to ensure it is the place to be for all of these conglomerate cannabis companies. If we don’t act now, and instead wait for other cities to be the ones pushing this envelope, we may miss the chance to grab hold of the market and make Las Vegas the cannabis consumption capital of the world. #StayWoke! Paranoia and Its Uses Upon completion of a recent 24-hour non-streaming TV binge, I realized three things simultaneously: somebody really should have straight-up murdered Gilligan (even if the island IS named for him), some TV shows stand the test of time better than others, and the entire world is plotting our destruction. Even as a kid, I realized that Gilligan would doubtlessly have been the first one eaten had things gone cannibal. The more likely that the Castaways would succeed with their weekly escape attempt, the greater the likelihood that Gilligan would screw it up. Even I would have stuck him in the neck with a conch shell, and I am a nice guy.

Scaring people with misinformation is a wonderful way of controlling their thoughts and actions.

MASH is still relatively entertaining. Bonanza still works, because cows and horses really haven't changed much. Law and Order is also relevant, as crime is still a thing, even if Jerry Orbach isn’t. But Married With Children? When it showed up in the late 80s, it was anti-hero TV, a precursor to Roseanne and the opposite of The Cosby Show. But now, 20 years later? I am surprised that Al Bundy never went on a kill spree. A wretched wife, stupid kids, an old car and a job selling women's shoes. Sure, he had his moments, but at the very least I would not have been surprised if they had run a “Very Special Episode” where Al locked himself in the garage and started the car. Just saying. Can your personal information be found on the Dark Web? I have a rough understanding of what constitutes the dark web that commercials keep threatening me with, and I'm not sure what all of the shouting is about. The internet is like an ocean: in some spots, it is miles and miles deep, but we really only pay attention to the top 20%. Search engines such as Google or Yahoo only really search the very top edge of the total data that is out there. Why is this? Because there really isn't that much to look at. Don't believe me? Download a Tor browser (it is free) and explore some onion sites. Sure, you can theoretically buy guns/ drugs/assassins online using Bitcoin; total anonymity is the Dark Web’s biggest selling point. Given this, why would you purchase anything from such an entity? Maybe you could pay somebody $600 for an AK-47, or maybe you could pay somebody $600 for running an anonymous ad and being paid with anonymous currency. Same with your identity. Same with your credit card numbers. There are much easier ways to get this information from you than to troll the depths of the unindexed internet.

Pat Boone, a cultural icon from the 60s (I think) is always on TV anymore, reminiscing about the “good old days”, when taking your money out of the bank to buy a car or go on vacation was clearly a common occurrence. However, Pat warns, if you try that shit now you may be investigated by the FBI, the CIA, the DEA, and very likely water boarded by your homeowner’s association. But here is the thing: he is kind of right. Do you know who routinely traffics large amounts of cash? Terrorist organizations. Drug cartels. He is plugging a service that sells gold, so when society implodes you will be able to use your Pat Boone gold to continue with your comfortable retirement (starving people work cheaply, as any iPhone manufacturer will tell you). Clearly, between Pat Boone's apocalyptic predictions and the Terminator-like presence of the dark web, we are all screwed with a capital F! Right? Well, no. Not really. The dark web, while real, is certainly nothing to fear and Pat Boone must be broke to be shilling for such a sketchy service. In my opinion, it is all a matter of people trying to influence us and they use paranoia as their weapon of choice. If you are in any way serious about your marijuana smoking, at some point you have seen the epic movie Reefer Madness; if not, go and watch it right now (I’ll wait). At the time, people really believed that movie. For that matter, there are people today who probably believe that movie. Scaring people with misinformation is a wonderful way of controlling their thoughts and actions. October is known for Halloween. Halloween is known for kids trick-or-treating and receiving candy. As far back as I can remember, there is always Official Warning from Very Important Individuals on the absolute likelihood that trick or treating children will receive marijuana edibles in their pillow cases. You don't believe me? This magazine will be out the first week of October. If you are reading this after the 15th of October and have yet to hear the annual warning about edibles being given to children, you are probably not watching the news OR the world has ended. Personal online research demonstrates that there has NEVER been a single reported incidence of a child receiving a marijuana edible while trick-or-treating. I mean, I don’t even give out full-sized candy bars to my diminutive visitors; do you really think I’m going to pass out $15 gummy bears? In the words of Flavor Flav, don’t believe the hype. Nevada Gaining Reputation for Doing Cannabis Regulation Right;

Are You Prepared to Enter Its Workforce? Legalized cannabis is becoming more commonplace throughout the United States. Much has changed since marijuana prohibition began 80 years ago. Today, adultuse cannabis is legal in 9 states and medical cannabis is legal in 30 states. With a little over a year in the adult-use cannabis sales, Nevada has exceeded its own forecast by 40%. Taxable cannabis sales statewide totaled $529.9 million and raised nearly $70 million in tax revenue, including $27.5 million for schools. Adult sales account for about 80% of that overall number; the other 20% of that number came from medical cannabis sales. Looking ahead, State Tax Director Bill Anderson is predicting a combined cannabis tax revenue of $69.4 million. This kind of growth has the potential to generate more than 467,000 full-time jobs across the country by 2022. In addition to the sheer number of jobs available, Nevada is gaining a reputation for doing it right. Testing is more rigorous. In addition to testing in smaller amounts on THC and CBD percentages as compared to other states, Nevada also tests for e-coli, salmonella, and aspergillus as well as heavy metal like arsenic, cadmium and mercury- all within five days of submitting a sample. As states become more sophisticated within the cannabis industry, today’s employers are beginning to realize they need people who are more than ‘closet growers.’ A wellrounded formal cannabis education is perhaps the fastest path toward success in seeking employment, building and operating a cannabis business, working with patients, creating and understanding regulations, and discerning the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. he magpie squeaked and squawked from her post on the dilapidated fence, calling to anyone willing to listen, it was time for dinner. His stomach made that same announcement nearly an hour ago. He’s certain the Magpie is female, as she has been hanging around for over a month. Francisco, an avid “birder” who never finished high school, knows as much about birds as any ornithologist. He knows it takes these relatives of the Crow, approximately forty-days to build their nests. This would explain her persistent presence. With his wife away for the next three days visiting family, Francisco is on his own. Originally, he feigned concern about being able to feed himself or keep the house well maintained during her absence. Not to mention how much he would miss her. Secretly, he looked forward to the time alone. Edie wasn’t concerned about coming home to a messy house, as her husband is meticulous in his organization and cleanliness. This is immediately evident to anyone who steps into his garage. There, they’ll find three entire walls of shelves displaying Mason jars of various sizes filled with nuts, bolts, screws, and the like. Items any carpenter or construction worker would need to bind one thing to another. Each jar holds only like components; absolutely no intermingling of metals. There is one Mason jar however, that is not on display. This one sits hidden beneath the workbench. None of his family members know for certain where exactly Francisco found all these fasteners, or the jars for that matter. What they do know, is that his collection has been years in the making. Edie did her best to allay Francisco’s nutrition concerns by dutifully preparing three complete meals for his suppers, while stocking the fridge with eggs, bacon, cheese and sourdough bread. She included plenty of Miller High Life and Folgers coffee to wash it all down. Unbeknownst to Edie, Francisco had something else in mind. As he sealed the lid on the last jar of washers carefully cleaning it with an old rag, Francisco felt a sudden rush of energy; excitement really. Absent-mindedly whistling and bobbing his head to Salsa music blaring from the transistor radio precariously balanced on his sawhorse, Francisco reminisced about days gone by. A newly divorced man in his mid-twenties, he had been fortunate to find a detached room to rent from a kind,

elderly couple. His landlords were thrilled with Francisco’s natural inclination to keep things tidy. This, along with the periodic pan of Paella he delivered to the couple, helped to keep his rent low for the duration of four years. A talented cook, Francisco, prepared entire gourmet meals on the small two burner hot plate that sat atop the mini-fridge. The youngest of ten, Francisco spent most of his time in the kitchen with his abuelita as his mother, by then, had lost interest in parenting her last born child. Before he could even walk, Francisco sat on the floor at his grandmother’s feet, playing bongos on pots and pans with wooden spoons and clapping together lids as makeshift cymbals. By age four, his grandmother was tying a kitchen towel around his waist in place of an apron. This was Francisco’s cue to scramble up onto one of the multicolored painted kitchen chairs, so he could assist at the stove. Before long, he was adding seasonings and being asked his opinion on taste and texture. *

It was as a young man, with jet black hair, olive skin and round dark, chocolate eyes women melted into, when he met Edie. She had wandered into a bar he frequented with two of her girlfriends. The girls were looking for something more exciting than the drab, dull bars they’d been spending their time in. Edie stood taller than Francisco; leggy with fiery red hair. Her tiny waist was accentuated by the wide black belt that topped off her mid-calf length skirt. She spied him from across the musty, crowded room almost immediately. And he, her. Both played it cool, watching one another. By her third drink, Edie built enough courage to approach this man, whose looks so differed from the blond, blueeyed boys she dated. He was . . . intriguing. Francisco’s smile widened as she drew closer. She noticed he threw what looked like a small, hand-rolled cigarette, onto the floor. Lifting her faux diamond cigarette holder a bit higher for dramatic effect while tilting her head slightly, Edie held Francisco’s attention for the rest of the evening. THE STORY the table and was always quick to pull out an engraved lighter whenever she pulled out a cigarette. One evening, as they stumbled back to his new 1932 green Dodge Pickup, Edie asked about the lighter. Francisco explained what the engraving meant and how each male member of the family was given one when leaving home. Quiet for a moment, Edie asked, why he had been lighting only her cigarettes, none of his own. Francisco flatly replied he didn’t smoke. Wrinkling her forehead in question, Edie stated she had seen him smoking that first meeting at the Five Corners bar. “That wasn’t a cigarette,” he replied. “Then what was it?” Francisco ignored her question by placing a kiss on her cheek then helped her into the truck. It wasn’t for another two months that Edie found out, quite by accident, what Francisco had been smoking that night. It was mid-afternoon and she was still lounging in bed. Francisco left earlier for a poker game, telling her she was welcome to stay. If she was still there when he returned, he’d take her to one of the most expensive restaurants in town with his winnings. Edie teased him about his confidence. Francisco responded, “But you know, I always win.” Not long after his departure, Edie began nosing around. Starting with his small closet, she noticed he owned several nice suits. He had left wearing a handsome brown tweed Glasgow. There were more Glasgows along with Zoot suits, even a couple of Gangster, pin striped suits. Edie moved on to the bathroom medicine cabinet; two toothbrushes, tweezers, deodorant and a bottle of cologne. She opened it, recognizing the scent; Francisco. Still in the haze of her smell-athon, Edie began opening dresser drawers. Nothing unusual; until a small wooden box in his sock drawer caught her attention. Pushing his perfectly rolled socks to the side and lifting the box, she took a moment to admire the engravings covering all sides. More Spanish words she didn’t understand. Slowly, so as not to disturb the contents, Edie opened the box. There inside was a package of papers, for rolling cigarettes along with several “Indian Cigarettes.” She knew they were Indian Cigarettes, as she had attended a party last year where people were smoking funny smelling, hand-rolled cigarettes and

that’s what they were calling them. The box emitted that same skunky smell; it still displeased her. Edie closed the box, placed it in exactly the same spot, then reassembled Francisco’s socks. For days, Edie didn’t say anything about the matter. She didn’t know how to bring it up without outing herself and her breach of privacy; until one chilly night. With poor insulation in his rented room, Edie’s feet had turned into two, size nine ice cubes. She started to ask if Francisco had another blanket. Then she was struck with an idea. Announcing her discomfort while rubbing her Popsicle toes against Francisco’s shins, she bounded from the bed to the dresser. Pulling open the sock drawer, she grabbed the box then, in her most innocent tone asked, “Oh my, what’s this?” Francisco wondering how she knew in which drawer he stored his socks sighed, saying, “It’s a box.” His secret was out. Francisco sat up, patting the spot Edie had vacated moments earlier, telling her to sit. He explained it all began when he was a child. Born with a defect in his left leg, requiring multiple surgeries inserting pins, screws and bolts into his body, it kept him from walking normally and caused excruciating pain. His grandmother used to prepare a “soothing tea,” for him. Using dried Cannabis in the same way she used tea leaves, she added honey and cinnamon to a cup of hot water, sometimes warm

milk. Francisco was offered this remedy whenever the pain became overwhelming. As he grew, so did the defect, taking over more area in his leg, creeping up to his hip. So his grandmother began preparing a healing balm with Cannabis. This, along with her elixir allowed Francisco to engage in active play he had been forced to forego as a younger child. Shortly after his grandmother passed, Francisco now a teenager, was introduced to Indian Cigarettes by a close friend of Paiute descent. Smoking the medicine wasn’t as tasty as his childhood beverage, but the cigarettes yielded the same results. Edie asked why he never smelled like the Indian Cigarettes. Francisco told her she could thank that cologne she so liked. Edie, eager to learn more about the man in her life and why he deemed Reefer a medicine rather than something evil, asked more questions about this strange herb. Francisco explained the differences between strains. How they help with inflammation and other medical maladies. Sativa also eases pain and discomfort but has the added benefit of better focus. Sativa dominate allows him to function yet slow down enough to solve problems and calculate potential outcomes; a plus for anyone who plays poker for a living. Edie listened intently, until he finished. Then, without blinking or smiling, stated she had no interest in Marijuana in any form. If Francisco insisted on continuing to use it for pain instead of seeing a real doctor, they were through. *

But that was then and this is now, and Edie is out of town. The pain had never subsided, and now as an elderly man, causes Francisco constant pain. He rummaged around the old tool box hidden under his workbench, bade farewell to the still cawing Magpie and made his way into the house with a Mason jar. This one stuffed with Marijuana cigarettes. Entering the kitchen he set the kettle on the stove to boil. After locating his old lighter, long regaled to the junk drawer, he sat himself down at the table. Holding down the spark-wheel, he watched as the flame lit the end of the tightly rolled joint. Slowly and deliberately he inhaled. The Weed had aged nicely. He couldn’t remember the last time he enjoyed a smoke like this. Without choking or coughing he leaned back comfortably, savoring the citrusy characteristics and earthy, floral scent of his medicine. Two more hits, then he’d get started on preparing the same elixir his grandmother had made for him as a child. Then dinner. It was almost imperceptible as the sound was in unison with the whistling tea kettle. But he heard it; the crunching of tires on his gravel driveway. Frantically he began waving his arms to disperse the smoke. But it was too late; Edie was already standing in the doorway.

Canna Paella

Ingredients Sofrito – recipe follows 3-4 cups vegetable broth – infused/optional 2 Tbsp canna-oil + 1 Tbsp canna-butter 8 oz. skinless/boneless chicken thighs - cubed salt / pepper 4 oz Spanish chorizo 1 pinch saffron 1 tsp paprika 1 ½ tsp turmeric 1 ½ cup short-grain rice 1/3 cup peas-fresh or frozen 1 Tbsp capers 1 lemon cut into wedges 2 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro Process Add to a 13” inch shallow skillet or Paella pan, Canna-oil and butter. Season chicken with salt and pepper, then add to shimmering oil and butter – cooking until lightly browned. Add rice and cook just until fragrant. Stir in Sofrito with chorizo. Add seasonings, broth, and reduce heat to simmer, cover pan with foil and allow to cook until rice is softened. Once rice is cooked, remove foil, add peas and capers. Increase heat and cook without stirring to create your soccarat, that crispy, crunchy, toasty rice coating that develops on the bottom of the pan. Spoon Paella into individual serving bowls; garnish with lemon wedges and cilantro. For Sofrito In a large skillet, over medium heat combine: 3 Tbsp Canna-olive oil and 1 Tbsp Canna-butter. Stir in 1 yellow onion – diced and sauté until golden brown. Add 1 red bell pepper-seeded and sliced julienne, 3 cloves garlic-minced and 1 can whole tomatoes. Crush the tomatoes with your hand as you drop them into the skillet (carefully). Stir in ½ tsp paprika, ½ tsp salt and 1 bay leaf. Cook this mixture over a simmer, stirring frequently, until sauce is thick and turns a deep brick red. Remove bay leaf before adding to paella pan. Makes 6 Servings

Amazingly, early rodent research has found that CBD may ease anxiety by overriding learned fear. While CBD itself may not make traumatic memories disappear, research in mice suggests that the compound can help change behavior patterns for the better. This is partly because CBD engages parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning, and emotion. In a 2016 review published in Frontiers of Pharmacology, the study’s author suggests that CBD may help anxiety by decreasing the expression of fear, disrupting the consolidation of fearful memories, and helping to extinguish fearful memories. Simply stated, CBD seems to help prevent the sensation of fear, prevents difficult memories from solidifying into more permanent memories, and may help delete fearful memories in the long run.

match that developed from going to the shows, it just grew naturally. HOPPER: The last time I saw you, you played me the new Real One track, that Blazer track he did. It was definitely slammin’! Has it been released yet? MB: He’s putting the finishing touches on it and we’re going to get it out there. I hope to get that in front of people very soon. His kind of enthusiasm, wow! It’s just amazing. I’m blown away by it.

I can’t live without my Blazer torch, so it was a no brainer to hit up Mark Blazer, the general manager of Blazer Products for a chat about the best torch on the market and what is coming up for this amazing product line. It’s always a great time when I catch up with Mark. If you’re not already, you should be a blazer too! HOPPER: Let’s jump right in. Tell Vegas Cannabis readers what it is that makes Blazer torches superior. MB: The engineering and craftsmanship. These are all handcrafted in Japan, not mass produced in China. They’ve been handcrafted for 33 years now, since 1985. That means high quality parts, quality control, the materials, everything that goes into it, you can feel the difference in a Blazer torch. HOPPER: I love mine, I’m definitely a Blazer. MB: Thank you, we appreciate that.

HOPPER: What are your thoughts on how much the industry has grown? What changes have you seen? Dabbing really is fairly new when you think about it. MB: Well, that’s how we got into the industry. We’d primarily been in the hand tool industry. We’ve been in the cigar industry for a good 15-20 years. About five years ago we just started noticing something going on, so we did a little research and discovered what else it was being used for. This was new for us, this industry was a little different for us because it knew us already, so that was very, very helpful. Some influencers, people in the industry, had already found the Blazer brand and immediately it spread by word of mouth. It’s been amazing. HOPPER: You have a great name, too. MB: Right, right! We get asked about that a lot. Our name is actually 33 years old,

but the original founder of Blazer was a Deadhead! HOPPER: You guys always have a huge presence at the trade shows. I dig hanging out at your booth, it’s like the homie hangout spot. MB: We love that, we want to cater more to that in 2019, we have some things planned for that. We love meeting all the people who use our products. We listen to them and develop functions and features and new products based on their feedback. Just recently we came out with two new products based on just listening to people. It’s very important to us. HOPPER: Like the Autopilot attachment, where you have your dab rig right on the end of the torch. I thought that was amazing. MB: Yeah! That was actually developed by an East Coast company, Scro Glass, they approached us because they liked our quality and wanted to partner with us. It’s a great

HOPPER: Oh, I have the question now about your team. I guess you would say it came together organically, correct? MB: Correct, I met Sly Vegas at one of the Champs shows in 2014. His work is incredible. HOPPER: He’s a phenomenal photographer and a really great guy. MB: I mean, honestly, there’s no one like him on the scene, the energy he puts into his work. Talking to him and seeing the sincerity and how much he believes in this industry and how much he wants to see people connect and grow. HOPPER: You hinted on social media that you have some “cool surprises” planned for the rest of the year. Will you give Vegas Cannabis readers a sneak peek? MB: Sure! Our first limited edition Big Shot we did in 2015. Limited edition is only for this industry, we wanted to do something just for the cannabis industry. The black Big Shot had been around for 30 years at that time, it’s been available to plumbers, mechanics, and electricians. The limited edition is only available to the head shops, the vape shops, the cannabis

industry. We wanted to do something special for those retailers. Our first limited edition was purple, and actually what we’re going to do is a limited re-release at the end of the year, of that purple. We’ve had so many requests for it, we had to do it. There’s actually one more thing if you want to spread the word on that. HOPPER: Definitely! What is it? MB: October is breast cancer awareness month, so for that we’ll be releasing a pink one, and a portion of the proceeds will be going to a cancer charity. Be sure to ask for it in your local shop! At 28 he’s also acquired a lifetime of physical pain from his demanding dance moves as infamous Drag Queen/dancer, Laganja Estranja. Jackson, as Laganja, has been featured on RuPaul’s Drag Race (season six), and more recently, he was chosen as the first professional drag queen on mainstream television show, So You Think You Can Dance. Growing up in the conservative state of Texas, he had his fair share of bullying. His saving grace was a family who loved and supported him, no matter what his sexual identity was. “As a young gay man in Texas, I was picked on a lot,” Jackson explained. “Because of my outlandish style, I called a lot of attention to myself and was often put down. My older sister had come out of the closet before me, making my family more open and aware of my needs. I was fortunate in that way.” By the time he was attending college at Cal Arts in Los Angeles, a back injury prompted a chiropractor to suggest he try cannabis for the pain. “Moving to Los Angeles really allowed me to explore my sexuality and individuality,” he continued. “The move also helped me physically and emotionally, because I found my medicine here.” Jackson said, rather than “popping a million pills,” he’s able to medicate with cannabis in a variety of ways, for a variety of ailments, including chronic pain. But this year, the monsters are showing their faces early. Coca-Cola is in talks to get into the industry, Monsanto is selling lights, pesticides, and nutrients to cannabis growers, major beer companies are looking to and indeed are spending millions in the industry, Canadian companies are buying up Nevada licenses, and the state has pulled all pet products (CBD) from dispensaries in what I can only figure will create another very expensive license. Before any of this legalization even started I was talking about how Coke, Marlboro, and Monsanto will get into it and ruin any medicinal value this amazing plant has. Well it looks like they are well on their way. And it’s only gonna get worse when it opens up on a federal level. These are the producers of products that are causing peoples diseases in the first place. Do you really think ANY of them are suddenly getting into the health and wellness of people? Hell No! They are here for one thing only: money. A lot of us have given everything to teach people that this plant is a medicine. There are a lot of people still in prison over cannabis. Families were torn apart. I know for a fact it’s led to countless suicides. Lives have been shattered. It’s still happening now. Having to hide from the badge is a hard way to live, even if you know what you are doing is saving lives or at the very least temporarily alleviating someone’s stress and or pain. All of this cannabis business comes from the underground. From the streets, the forests, the garages, the closet grows, hidden in the hills. We were all known as criminals. And granted, some of us are, but for the most part, we have been doing this (selling, crossing and growing strains, coming up with new edibles and concentrates) to help people find a way to relieve their pain and take their health back into their own hands.

But the thing we can do is watch where we support. When these companies do get their products out, DON’T BUY THEM! Stick with what you know is right. There are plenty of companies and brands that are trusted and doing things right. You can read about them in this magazine in your hands. You have a choice in what you support. If they don’t get that support, hopefully they will fade away. Also, keep an eye out for these companies from other states coming into our state when it’s well known that they failed tests in their home states. If they are gonna poison their own people, what do you think they will do in a state full of tourists? Until my last breath I will always try to remind folks that these are the people making you sick in the first place, your trust in them should be GONE. Don’t let them have another chance to poison you again. Because believe me, they will. And hopefully elsewhere is an article explaining what’s going on with pet products in dispensaries. (I don’t have enough info yet) It breaks my heart to have people tell me how these products are doing amazing things to help their pets and then have to tell them that the state will not allow us to sell it to them anymore. Luckily there are a few great CBD shops in town that are still carrying them and if all else fails, just get some of the regular CBD oils and give it to them In very small doses. On their latest disc, jam band Leftover Salmon hooks new textures and styles

>>>>>>>> By Jarret Keene Leftover Salmon specializes in music you can blast at a good-time party. Blending bluegrass and countryrock and jazz—with a dash of zydeco for flavor—the Colorado-spawned band has served, for nearly 30 years, as the Grateful Dead’s Cajun-scented nephew. But Salmon will be jumping to the top of critics’ bestof lists thanks to this summer’s release of Something Higher, produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos). The album renders charged emotions and ideas with an ear toward new sonic horizons. Take, for example, “Places,” which addresses the dislocation of the open road and the tragic rootlessness of being a touring musician. Atop cascading piano trills, courtesy of keyboardist Erik Deutsch, floats a bittersweet trucker melody, delivered by mandolin player Drew Tillman, that sounds incredible when you’re blasting it in a moving vehicle on the highway. For guitarist-singer Vince Herman, playing in a travelin’ band is actually getting a bit easier. “Over the last three decades,” says Herman during a recent phone chat with VCM, “what has been consistent is missing home. No matter how it is we travel or where we go, the melancholy stays the same.” Salmon no longer drives around in an old school bus with no AC like they did when they got their start. Today the band members are more likely to find themselves wedged into a middle seat on a flight from Newark to San Francisco. Sure, the tortures of travel are what you sign up for when you play music for a living. But there was once a time, not long ago, when the band did 250 shows a year. “We’re doing 114 shows this year, says Herman. “But you have to consider all our side projects, too.” In other words, the artists in Leftover Salmon love music because it’s in their blood; they’re not doing this to pay off second mortgages. You can hear their passion in the gritty New Orleans horns and Santana-grade guitar licks in the title track, “Show Me Something Higher.” The song is an appeal for

a touch of the divine. Does Herman believe in a greater power these days?

“Yeah, I guess I do,” he says. “I don’t know if I can put a face or a name to it, but I believe we are divine, that we come from a divine place. We’re here to do more than just feed ourselves. We’re here to love our fellow spiritual beings on earth.” “Something Higher” is perfectly followed by the earthy, galloping, banjo-plucking hoedown “Analog,” a plea for the human touch, a yearning for the authentic and organic: Don’t try to text me/My face is in a book. Don’t give me no digital/Just give me that analog. How does Herman feel about the tech-hippies who created the digital world we seem to be succumbing to more and more every day? “It is wild that Internet was created by people taking LSD in their garage,” he concedes. “Good things evolve and sometimes go sideways and are used for bad ends. Certainly advertisers are getting their grip on the Web now, and if net neutrality goes away, things will get worse.” Indeed, the song and its lyrics center on a need for genuine expression, a notion dear to Herman, who is, after all, enough of a music fanatic to own an acoustical Victrola. He uses the vintage machine to enjoy vinyl records free of electrical interference. Speaking of pure sound, you can hear producer Steve Berlin’s influence in the spooky Los Lobos-like vibe of album track “House of Cards,” which contains the album’s most pointed lyrics: This is not normal/This has got to end/This is not who we are/Love is gonna win again. Given the current political climate, does Herman ever grow jaded with adhering to the message that love conquers all? “We’re going to realize one day soon that big data and mainstream politics aren’t leading us anywhere worthwhile. We’re going to rehumanize. All this B.S. is going away so we can finally produce something good and honest, something that heals.” The elegiac “Astral Traveler” might be the best song Salmon has ever done. It strives for a sound just beyond the band’s reach, an eerie synthesis of bluegrass and Tangerine Dream-era krautrock. When he first heard the playback, Herman was surprised by the song’s majesty.

“We wrote and recorded ‘Astral Traveler’ in honor of our mentor, Bruce Hampton, of Hampton Grease Band and a peer of the [Grateful] Dead,” says Herman. “When you think of Bruce and the way he resonates in people’s lives, you should always expect a surprise. Channeling his energy made us more aware as musicians. We went looking for profound things and came up with something remarkable.” Instrumental track “Game of Thorns” brings the pure bluegrass shred. Three minutes in, the music takes off in an entirely different, mystical, progressive-rock direction. How challenging was it to bring this song together and to edit it? “No editing,” admits Herman. “We recorded it live, in real time. One of the things about the studio [Wavelab in Tucson, Arizona] we were in is that it has 40 different keyboards, all set up and ready to go. [Keyboardist] Erick was able to play 20 different things by just walking around the studio, which gave us lots of flexibility.” Herman is learning to admire the Southwest. He’s eager to visit Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire. After all, Herman and his band frequently bask in the natural surroundings of the cities in which they perform.

“We’re into wide open spaces, and we consider ourselves a rural band. We started in the hills of Boulder, Colo., and rented a ranch at one point. Our banjo player Andy Thorn is a dedicated hiker and climber, and I’m sure he’ll want to check out the beauty outside Las Vegas. We draw inspiration from the outdoors. ANNA LOVE Anna Love is a local, self-taught artist who creates beautiful works of art using the Pointillism Technique, more commonly known as dot art. She applies this technique to beautiful mandalas and fractal types of art on canvas, vinyl records, guitars, drums and river rocks. We recently caught up with here to learn more about why she became an artist, how she feels about cannabis, and where her art can be found. VEGAS CANNABIS: What led you to become an artist? ANNA LOVE: Becoming an artist was not an intentional goal. After years of working in jobs that drained my energy, all I wanted to do was to find something that brought joy into my life. I realized that I had let go of all the things that truly made me happy because I was solely focused on earning a living. Sadly, I couldn't even think of anything that I thought would make me happy again. Basically I decided to go back to being a kid and started to play around with acrylic paints so to speak. VCM: What type of art do you specialize in? ANNA: The discovery of Pointillism, or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dot Artâ&#x20AC;? as I like to refer to it, opened up a whole new world for me. I'm fascinated with creating dots and excited that I can literally add dimension to my art. I love decorating everything from canvases to rocks, drums, guitars and even vinyl records with vibrant colors and texture. Another reason why it resonates so much is because of the fact that, through the eyes of quantum physics, everything in our material world consists of atoms- if we look close enough nothing is truly solid. Everything is made of energy. In essence what I'm doing is channeling energy, transforming it and expressing it through my own filter. VCM: How would you describe your style?

ANNA: I particularly enjoy painting mandalas and fractals by repeating patterns that are found in nature. It is a very relaxing and meditative practice and I love the fact that my art can take you on a journey while observing the details. VCM: Do you have a studio or gallery here locally? ANNA: Although I would love to own a gallery, the business aspects of it would be a big distraction for me. Currently, I display my art at various galleries, dispensaries and local health and wellness shops, as well as occasional music events and fundraisers. These two medicated pie crusts are for you to recreate and enjoy with friends and family. The life changing chocolate chip cookies are so good, they are going to change your life for the better. Each recipe is a favorite of mine that I share with friends while visiting when they don’t have to drive home. As cannabis connoisseurs, we should all be conscious to not let friends (or yourself) drive impaired. Eat responsibly. Simply Medicated Pie Crust

2 and 1/2 cups (315 grams) all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cubed infused with 900 MG THC kief 1/2 cup cold vegetable shortening cut into a few pieces 1/2 cup ice water 1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt until well combined. Add the cold cubed butter and cold vegetable shortening to the pea-sized crumbs. Slowly drizzle in one tablespoon of ice water at a time and gently mix it in. Once the dough starts to come together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and pack it into a ball. Cut the dough in half and flatten it into two discs. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour. 2. To bake the pie crust: Roll the dough out to 12 inches in diameter, transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie plate, gently fit it in, trim any excess dough, and decorate the edges. Line the pie dough with parchment paper or foil, making sure to cover the bottom and the sides, then fill with pie weights (dried beans or dry rice work well too). Bake with the pie weights at 400°F for 15 minutes. Remove the parchment paper and the pie weights. Prick the bottom of the pie crust with a fork to prevent bubbling and return to the oven. For a partially baked pie crust return the crust to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes or until the bottom of the crust looks dry. For a fully baked pie crust, return to the oven and allow to bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

Chef Fred So-High I’m Scared Pumpkin Pie Filling 1 cup light brown sugar 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 3 large eggs lightly beaten 1 15-ounce can pumpkin puree 1 1/4 cups evaporated milk infused with 5000 MG THC distillate

To prepare the filling: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves until well combined. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin puree and infused evaporated milk until well combined. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix together until fully combined. To make the pumpkin pie: Pour the pumpkin pie filling into the partially baked pie crust. Return to the oven and bake at 400°F for 45-50 minutes, or until the center is almost set (it should be a little wobbly). Remove from the oven and cool completely.

Comfortably Loaded Apple Pie Filling

1/2 cup infused sugar 2700 MG THC 1/4 cup (packed) golden brown sugar 2 tablespoons all purpose flour 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 pounds Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, thinly sliced

Terpy Fruit Tart

For tart shell: 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons granulated sugar Rounded 1/4 teaspoon salt 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 large egg yolk 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 3 tablespoons cold water For filling: 1 1/2 pounds strawberries (about 1 1/2 quarts), trimmed and halved lengthwise 1/3 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup ruby Port 1 pound mascarpone (about 2 cups) 1/4 cup confectioners sugar 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest 3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Equipment: a 10-inch fluted tart pan with removable bottom; pie weights or dried beans Ingredients: 1½ ounces white or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped infused with 3000 MG THC distillate 1 half-pint basket (6 ounces) raspberries 1 half-pint basket (6 ounces) blackberries 1 half-pint basket (5½ ounces) blueberries A thin layer of melted white or semisweet infused chocolate helps the crust stay crisp by preventing the moisture in the pastry cream from soaking into the cookie-like crust. Finish the top with the ripest, most luscious fruit you can find. Summer berries are an obvious choice, but also try slices of nectarines and plums, poached pears, pineapple, mango or kiwi, depending upon the season. Prepare Simply Medicated pie crust dough and chill according

to directions. Bake the shell: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line the chilled tart shell with heavy-duty foil, pressing the foil firmly and smoothly into the crevices of the pan. Fill the pan with pie weights. Make sure the weights reach up the sides to the rim of the pan (the center does not need to be filled quite as full). Bake the shell for 20 to 22 minutes. Remove the pie weights and return the pan to the oven to continue baking for about 10 minutes, then remove the pan from the oven, close the oven door, and check to see if any cracks have formed. If you see a crack, very gently smear a tiny bit of reserved dough over the crack to patch it- you only need enough to seal the opening. Return the pan to the oven and bake 10 to 15 minutes longer, until the crust is a nice golden brown all over. Transfer to a rack and cool completely. Moisture-proof the crust: Bring an inch of water to a boil in the bottom of the double boiler. Place the chocolate in the top of the double boiler off the heat. Then place the chocolate over the steaming water. Stir occasionally with the silicone or rubber spatula until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Scrape the melted chocolate into the cooled tart shell and use the offset spatula to spread it into a thin layer across the bottom and about ½-inch up the side. Fill the tart: Spoon the Vanilla Bean Pastry Cream into the tart crust and spread into an even layer. Refrigerate while you prepare the fruit. Place each fruit in the tart, making sure there is a nice balance of all the berries in each area of the tart. Finish the tart: Heat the raspberry jam and water in the small saucepan over low heat until melted, hot, and fluid. Brush just enough of the melted jam over the tops of the berries to glaze them a bit.

Black Garlic “Trainwreck THC Arugula Pesto Vinaigrette” ½ C. oil (coconut, olive, grapeseed) ½ C. “trainwreck” flower or shake Instructions: Grind the herb (A hand grinder works best) lay it flat on a cookie sheet, wrap with foil and bake 200’F for 30 min (decarboxylation helps activate THC). Allow to cool with foil still on, this helps vapors to soak back into the product). Heat your oil in a crock pot, double boiler or pot on the stove (do not heat oil over 245’F). Remove foil and sprinkle ½ t. soy lecithin granules over herb, pour oil over decarbed herb and put back in the oven with foil for 45 minutes. Strain and cool.
