DECOMPRESS WITH AERIAL YOGA

An Interview with Rebecca Perrick

Many of you know Rebecca Perrick for her extensive work within the cannabis industry. What you may not know is that she grew up as a competitive gymnast and now teaches aerial yoga here in Las Vegas. She is an amazing teacher and really strives to make each class both fun and beneficial. I recently tried a class, loved it, and had to learn more about Rebecca and the practice of aerial yoga.

STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Hey Rebecca, great to see you again. Are you originally from Vegas?

REBECCA PERRICK: I am originally from New York but moved to Las Vegas from Singer Island, Florida. Eight years ago, I came to Vegas on a vacation with a group of friends. While here, I was very impressed by the culture, innovation and opportunity of the burgeoning cannabis industry. A few months later I made the move and have been here ever since.

SS: Oh wow, that’s quite the move in just a short time. Tell me about your background.

RP: My background is in wellness and healthcare. I grew up as a competitive gymnast and coach. My sister advised me early on that I could actually teach through play as an Occupational Therapist so I went on to pursue a Bachelor’s in Health Science and a Master’s in Occupational Therapy. I am also a board certified Occupational Therapist.

SS: What led you to aerial yoga?

RP: The many facets of my upbringing led me to aerial yoga. From the therapeutic side, to the gymnastics side and also the wellness side, aerial yoga has been an amazing fit for me. I started attending aerial yoga classes when I lived in New York. I then taught aerial yoga in both New York and Florida before moving here. Now I teach classes here locally.

SS: I attended one of your classes and loved it! When I Google aerial yoga, Wikipedia defines it as “a hybrid type of yoga combining traditional yoga poses, pilates, and dance with the use of a hammock.” Can you tell me about the benefits of this type of yoga?

RP: Aerial yoga provides opportunities for active, passive and assisted range of motion, stretching without exertion and nourishing your joints. Just as swimming is great for your joints, aerial yoga can do the same, allowing you to move without gravity acting on your spine. Suspending and inverting allows you to decompress your body and take pressure off your nerves.

Working with the hammock to perform various yoga poses replenishes your blood flow and assists with lymphatic drainage. Plus, you’re swinging which is not only beneficial but also loads of fun.

SS: The hammock-assisted stretching definitely felt good. You offer what you refer to as a high class and a low classcan you explain the difference? And, are all ages welcome at your classes?

RP: The low class is much more of a restorative, therapeutic class. You stay low to the ground and utilize the hammock to assist with different poses. This class is slower and less intimidating than the high class and is meant to give you a deep stretch with less exertion. The high class will also give you a great stretch but it is more active and involves some gymnastics. You’re spinning, twisting, flying and flipping. This class demands more strength than the low class. My classes are for all ages.

SS: You also host a class once a month specifically for those in the cannabis industry - tell me about that event.

RP: The first Wednesday of each month we do a “Hammocks and Huni Badgers” event for the cannabis industry. We do a high class and a low class the same evening and in between, my friends over at Huni Badger (which is right next to Shine) host a sesh with food and drinks for attendees.

SS: That’s awesome! Do you also do private events?

RP: I do! I have done classes for small groups, Bachelorette parties, one-on-one classes, birthday parties and more.

SS: How can readers follow you and also find out when classes are held and how to attend them?

RP: Typically I announce classes on social media. I am on Facebook under Rebecca Perrick and also on Instagram @ rperrick. Those interested can send me a message on either platform.

Introduces The First All Vegan Farmer's Market Lulu's Vegan Kitchen >>>

The Woman

Lulu Pulido has lived in Las Vegas for most of her life. From the time that she was a young child, she struggled with her weight - she was bullied and self conscious. In 2016, she made the decision to begin her weightloss journey. She joined the gym and hired a personal trainer, who eventually became her best friend. Her trainer was vegan and noticed that Lulu was struggling with not only her weight but also her acne prone skin. She convinced her to begin leaning more towards a vegan lifestyle and as Lulu began to make the dietary changes she noticed her health improved, her weight became more manageable and her skin began clearing up. She didn’t need much more convincing than that and quickly embraced a totally vegan diet and lifestyle.

The Business

Lulu has been making salsa for many years and it was only a matter of time before friends and family encouraged her to start bottling her salsa as a business. Thus, Lulu’s Vegan Kitchen was born. Using only fresh, vegan ingredients, Lulu prepared a batch of salsa and headed for her first farmers market where she completely sold out. Today, she can frequently be found around town at the various markets. In addition, her salsa can be purchased online at lulusvegankitchen.square.site.

The Community

As business increased, Lulu quickly realized that the farmers markets were great but there weren’t too many vegan specific vendors. She decided to put together her own event which featured an array of fully vegan artisan vendors, awesome food trucks, handcrafted items, live music and more. This allowed attendees living a vegan lifestyle to attend a market where they didn’t have to ask about the ingredients and they could rest assured that everyone was on the same wavelength. Now, markets are held once a month at Ariva Luxury Residences located at 11055 S. Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas NV 89183. Each event includes 40 vendors, and entry and parking are free.

The next market is scheduled for May 19th.

PUFF, PUFF, CHILL >>> Inside Planet 13’s New Dazed! Cannabis Lounge

The idea of cannabis lounges in Vegas has been floating around since Nevada gave the green light to legalization back in 2017. Until now, if you wanted to light up legally, you were pretty much limited to doing so behind closed doors, in private residences. This posed quite the conundrum for tourists lured in by the city’s plethora of dispensaries, as sparking up in hotel rooms or public spaces—especially along The Strip—was a big no-no. But this year marks a turning point, and what once was just a farfetched dream is now a tangible reality.

Earlier this year, a small number of dispensaries made a splash by unveiling the state’s first cannabis lounges, signaling a new era. And, when it comes to doing things on a grand scale, we couldn’t help but wonder what Planet 13, the country’s largest dispensary, had in store for their own lounge, aptly named Dazed!. And let me tell you—it definitely exceeds expectations. From the UFO-themed corner booth to the lightup Asteroids-themed wall, the whole place is a

colorful carnival for your eyes.

To learn more about the newly-opened Dazed!, we spoke with Larry Scheffler, Co-Owner of Planet 13, and General Manager of the new lounge, Chris Stickney, who shared all the details with us.

How Dazed! Came To Be

When it came to creating Dazed!, Larry Scheffler and co-CEO Bob Groesbeck knew they had to bring something extraordinary to the table. "We've been in Vegas for 50 years, and if there's one thing we know, it's that everyone who comes here wants to be entertained, and we consider that our job," Larry shared. Driven by this ethos, they aimed for an overthe-top design. "From the red drone orbs in the dispensary to giant butterflies that fly with the power of the wind through our plaza, we love to give people sensory overload. For Dazed!, we wanted something unique, something that would amaze. Bob and I spent WAY too long on

Pinterest creating vision boards, but we were determined to make it different from anything anyone has ever seen. We may not have been the first, but we’re definitely the best.”

A Marriage of Medicine & Entertainment

The launch of Dazed! mirrored the passion behind its concept. Chris Stickney, General Manager of the new lounge, said the ribboncutting ceremony exceeded all expectations, drawing 200 to 300 guests every day since opening. "My favorite part," Chris remarked, "has been seeing the transformation in our visitors—from initial apprehension to relaxed enjoyment, thanks to our knowledgeable staff who tend to them with care. I get to see the calm happen in real time."

The staff, mostly former budtenders, thrive in this environment as well, and derive so much joy in enhancing guests' experiences. "They love making a difference in people’s lives, and

22 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
>>> BY JADEN RAE & Andrea Caple

here, they can guide guests through the entire cannabis experience, which is incredibly fulfilling for them."

Chris also pointed out how Dazed! seamlessly blends the recreational and medicinal aspects of cannabis within an entertaining framework. "We once had a party of seven dressed as Elvis come in. For them, it was obviously a good time. On the other hand, we know this is some people’s actual therapy. We had a gentleman recently come in from out of town. He uses cannabis medicinally, and when he’s here, he has to do what many people who are staying in hotels do—smoke in the bathroom with the vent on and a towel under the door. Can you imagine someone trying to take their insulin in secret like that? When he visited the lounge, he was able to comfortably medicate while his family went shopping. I think another thing that people really love about it is it’s such a safe space, one that is so different from the usual bar vibe where you might run into people who get aggressive when they drink.

Aside from the ambiance, Dazed! also boasts a wealth of exclusive offerings. "We have devices like the PuffCo Peak Pro smart rig and Zenco vaporizer, available only here outside of private homes, thanks to our exclusive partnerships," Chris explained. “We also have a comprehensive menu with 15 strains, all unique to our own grows, all available in live resin, live rosin, prerolls, and vapes. And we just rolled out a full uninfused menu you can enjoy right in the lounge from our in-store restaurant, Breakfast Junkies.”

A New Haven For Locals

As Vegas roller-coasters between blistering summers and chilly winters, Dazed! offers a cozy retreat for locals to gather without the worry of skunking up their own homes. It's an elevated take on the traditional puffpuff-pass, and the perfect indoor spot to meet fellow cannabis enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned stoner or a dab rig newb, the expert budtenders at Dazed! are always on hand to guide you through the dizzying array of strains and consumption methods to find what works best for you. If you haven’t yet seen what Dazed has to offer, we highly recommend you experience this feast for the senses.

>>> connect with the earth Grounding for Wellness

Earthing, also known as grounding, is when your bare skin–typically the feet–contacts the earth. The earth is a giant electron storehouse with a subtle electric pulse called the Schumann Resonance that has fostered the evolution of biological life on earth for all of time. When you are electrically grounded, your biology has access to an endless supply of electrons allowing you to function as you have evolved to, entrained to the 24-hour circadian rhythm of the earth which orchestrates normal diurnal hormone patterns.

The frequency of the Earth, the Schumann Resonances, have a distinct peak at 7.83Hz, which matches the frequency of brain waves associated with meditation, inner calm, creativity, mindfulness, and healing. Studies show that separation from the Earth's natural light and frequencies confuses your circadian rhythm and plays a part in affective disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder.

This is why being outside feels so refreshing: you're literally hitting the reset button on your biology and syncing to the natural rhythm of the Earth, as nature intended. When we go barefoot at the beach, swim in the ocean, or wear earthing shoes, we share the same electrical potential as the Earth and therefore submerge ourselves in the harmonizing rhythms of the Schumann resonance. These experiences reveal the peace and clarity these types of earthing practices bring into our life.

There are two fundamental changes that occur when you are grounded that are responsible for all the sciencebacked benefits of earthing: reduced inflammation and regulated circadian rhythm. Inflammation is primarily caused by neutrophils, which are a type of white blood cell the body releases when it detects

a pathogen or damaged cell. Neutrophils are sent to the site where the pathogen or damaged cell is located, encapsulate it, then release reactive oxygen molecules (reactive = missing an electron).

If you don't have enough electrons in your body, when a neutrophil does its job (oxidative burst to destroy the pathogen or damaged cell) and there are leftover reactive molecules, within nanoseconds these reactive molecules are going to steal an electron... the only resource left being a healthy cell in an ungrounded body. When an electron is stolen from a healthy cell, the immune system is then triggered: "oh there's more damage," and sends more neutrophils to remediate the newly damaged cells, and so begins a chain reaction. Silent, chronic inflammation that can continue for years. To prevent this inflammatory domino effect, it's easy: get grounded.

When you are electrically grounded to

the earth, free electrons spread throughout the body, which has an antioxidant effect. After the neutrophils release their oxidative burst and seek out electrons, the electrons from earthing are there to neutralize the situation. This prevents neutrophils from stealing electrons from healthy cells.

In short, circadian rhythm is your body’s internal clock. Sunlight, forest bathing, groundwater submersion, and earthing all connect you with the extremely low frequency (ELF) of the earth’s Schumann Resonance which informs our internal clock. Circadian rhythm encompasses much more than just the sleep-wake cycle–it’s how your body coordinates the 24hour cycle of precise biochemical reactions that are crucial for optimal health. When we live disconnected from the harmonizing frequencies of unadulterated earth, our internal timing is off, which results in serious problems like inflammation, insomnia, mood affective disorders, and autoimmune disease.

Earthing has been shown to increase the surface charge of red blood cells, thereby reducing blood viscosity and clumping. The red blood cells maintain separation as a result of their surface charge, allowing for a more orderly single-file flow into the capillaries. Grounding appears to be one of the simplest and yet most profound interventions for helping reduce risk of cardiovascular events. The circulatory benefits of earthing increase the health and recovery of our body's tissue by improving the delivery of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.

Further studies have shown earthing's effectiveness in improving heart rate variability (HRV). Variability in one's heart rate is linked with reduced stress and greater calmness. HRV is a widely accepted

24 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

indicator of health–yet another reason why earthing is a powerful tool to use to minimize risk of a cardiovascular event.

Earthing after injury can reduce or even prevent the hallmark signs of inflammation: redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function. Researchers have confirmed expedited recovery of painful chronic inflammation using medical infrared imaging. Pain reduction from earthing helps both newly formed wounds as well as the many types of chronic pain, such as arthritis. By producing measurable differences in the concentrations of white blood cells, cytokines, and other molecules, earthing benefits the inflammatory response.

Grounding after exercise is helpful in the speed of recovery. One study monitored pain and immune response and pain in response

Unveiling the Hidden Dangers

Exploring Harmful Additives in American Foods

Most of us had heard the saying by the great Hippocrates, “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” We all know there are some foods that are bad for us, while others are a better choice. However, what if foods, even many of which we are taught are “good for us,” are actually causing and contributing to illness, including cancer, neurological diseases, attention deficit disorder, and inflammatory conditions? Recently, I learned about the many additives that are put into our foods, many of which are marketed as ‘healthy choices,’ and I was appalled. As someone who lives with a chronic rare disease that brings inflammation among other things, I couldn’t believe some of the things me and my family were consuming, despite trying to make healthier choices. Because unfortunately the foods we buy don’t need to label the diseases it can potentially cause, instead they use a term not many will recognize. Though truly, reading labels can be difficult, and remembering the disease every chemical can contribute to can be impossible. Thankfully, in today’s age there are a multitude of apps that allow us to make better decisions in the grocery store; one of them being the Yuka App. It is a free app that allows us to easily scan food and beauty products, showing us the additives present and the risk of consuming them, along with scientific research. It also gives us alternative options that are a better choice, because as you may learn like I did, most of the items we use are harmful. Here are some of the numerous additives commonly found in our foods along with their associated risks.

Monosodium Glutamate- Flavor enhancer

• May cause nausea, migraines, hot flashes, and skin flushing

• Contributes to the development of diabetes, weight gain, and obesity

• May play a role in the development of neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease

• May play a role in the development of auto-immune disorders

Some items the additive is used includes: Seasoning Blends, Canned Soups and Broths, Salad Dressings, Pasta Sauces, Processed Meat

Phosphates (Sodium Phosphate, Triphosphates, Tricalcium Phosphate, Disodium Phosphate, etc.)- Slows down the oxidation of food

• Excess phosphate consumption can cause:

Damage to the kidneys

Disrupt bone mineralization

Increase the risk of cardiovascular disease

Increase the risk of breast cancer

Some items the additive is used in includes: Macaroni and Cheese, Almond Milk, Soy Milk, Oat Milk, Canned Soup, Sliced Cheese, Processed Meat

Caramel Color- Food Coloring

• Caramel Color consists of four types of coloring with different health risks. In America, there is no requirement for a distinction on labeling when using caramel color. The most commonly used

26 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
>>>

is Class III and IV.

Class III and IV are potentially carcinogenic to humans according to the International Research Agency for Cancer Research.

Class III and IV are immunotoxin compounds, making them toxic to the immune system

Some items the additive is used includes: Broth, Canned Soup, Ready Made Meals, Beverages (Soda, Tea, Cannabis Beverages) Salad Dressing, Instant Noodles

Tertiary-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ)- Antioxidant to slow the oxidation of food

• Can alter the structure of genetic material

• Potential to cause thyroid and stomach cancer

• Weaken the immune system

Some items the additive is used in includes: Bread, Cereal, Granola Bars, Crackers, Chips

Sucralose and Acesulfame K- Sweetener

• Increases the risk of cancer

• Increases the risk of heart disease

Some items the additive is used in includes: Dietary Drinks, Sports/ Vitamin Drinks, Flavored Water, Low-calorie and Reduced • Sugar Foods

Now I know what you may be thinking, this is absolutely sickening. The food we feed our loved ones and ourselves contributes to a range of diseases, some of which are often terminal. Some countries have banned various additives, and many of the products we have in America are made much differently from other countries, and yet we get additives in our food that can make us sick. It is no wonder why the United States has the lowest life expectancy at birth and the highest rate of people with multiple chronic conditions. Once we know better though, we can do better. We can make better decisions and purge our households of chemicals and additives that are known to cause cancer, Alzheimer’s, and so many more devastating illnesses. We also need to talk about it more. We need to talk about the fact that the food we eat is horrid for us at the grocery store; we need to tell our friends, colleagues, and loved ones. We get loud about it so that everyone begins to realize that it’s not just fried food and a soda that’s bad for you, it’s the granola bars, flavored waters, the concentrated broth we use to make “healthy” homemade vegetable soup, and so much more that has harmful additives as well. I don’t know if we can ever change America and stop the additives in our food, but I’d like to hope that if enough of us talk about it and enough of us refuse to buy the products with the additives, than maybe one day, generations after us can shop freely for themselves and family without the chance of one of them getting a disease from unnecessary harmful additives.

Kenny Cottrell Industry Spotlight >>>

Along with the many draconian laws and restrictions surrounding cannabis’ Schedule I status, one of the most frequently disproven aspects of cannabis and professionals working in the cannabis industry is that they care about nothing more than just “smoking weed” and being aimlessly lazy. Even as the American cannabis industry will be recreationally legal in a majority of the states and will easily surpass $60 billion in annual sales as well as employing millions by the end of the 2020’s, dedicated and brilliant cannabis professionals still sometimes have to defend themselves against that “lazy stoner” stereotype.

Whether that be the “unambitious” stigma that cannabis professionals and consumers are falsely labeled with or the other stereotype that anyone who uses cannabis doesn’t care whatsoever about obtaining a higher education, untrue falsehoods that have unfortunately been existent since even before the Drug War was in office are still all too common. Quite the contrary, the cannabis industry has educated and incredibly ambitious professionals who either have already obtained advanced degrees in all types of fields from some of America’s most prestigious universities or are actively pursuing not only Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees but Master’s and even PhD programs in specifically useful subjects.

It’s a wonderfully beneficial time for this influx of aspiring scholars and students who work in the cannabis industry to obtain their degrees, as cannabis itself and the rapidly evolving industry are becoming accredited courses, certificates and degrees at universities across America. In upstate New York, Syracuse University offers a Cannabis Studies minor program while the Ivy League school Cornell University offers multiple certificate programs. In Minnesota, St. Cloud University offers four courses taught by Green Flower and Cal Poly Humboldt offers an entire Bachelor of Arts in Cannabis Studies.

A prime example of a brilliant cannabis professional and business owner who’s obtaining a very advanced degree, a Doctorate in Public Policy from UNLV to be specific, is Kenny Cottrell. Born and raised in the musically inclined city of Atlanta, Cottrell’s educational journey has been very similar to others who pursue graduate degrees, in that it hasn’t been a linear journey of direct jumps from Bachelor’s to Master’s to Doctorate with no time off in between.

Cottrell’s educational career began in his home state of Georgia and attended one of the most recognized HBCUs in America and one with an illustrious list of alumni who have cemented themselves in progressive American history such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, endlessly entertained us for decades such as Samuel L. Jackson, served in the most powerful committees in the United States Legislative Branch and genius scientists that have revolutionized their subjects of study, that college of course being Morehouse College in Atlanta.

“I studied biology first, then switched to corporate finance. I got into real estate while I was in Morehouse College and started a real estate firm. I dropped out of my senior year after flipping my seventh house and for the next seven years, I was a real estate investor. I did eventually go back to school at Georgia Piedmont Technical College and get an Associate’s in Criminal Justice in 2014. During that time, I was getting into tech and became a tech incubator for two companies.”

Eventually, Cottrell went back to his former profession of real estate and would go on to design all varieties of entertainment and commercial venues. Unfortunately though, Cottrell was indicted on money laundering charges and received six months in prison and two years of probation. This was very much a roadblock of a series of events, yet Cottrell didn’t let it prevent his continued pursuit of higher education. Sadly for the scholar and businessman however, many Georgia universities either outright prohibit most felony offenders from becoming enrolled in their schools or at least admit far fewer aspiring students with criminal records.

Because of the money laundering conviction, Cottrell was rejected from both Kennesaw State University and Georgia State University. Luckily, universities such as UNLV don’t do as thorough and sometimes restrictive background checks and through a colleague he made during his work as a delegate for the Georgia Democratic Party in 2012, Cottrell applied to UNLV.

“Obama actually gave some funds to minority-serving institutions, not just HBCUs, and UNLV is at the top of it. It was also around this time that I found out they had a Black president and I applied.” Even more interestingly, Dr. Keith E. Whitfield is the very first Black president of the very diverse university.

30 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

At the beginning of the very fateful year of 2020, Cottrell began attending UNLV and received his Bachelor’s of Science in Urban Study in December of 2021. The college graduate took no time off whatsoever and began his Master’s program in January of 2022, studying to receive a graduate degree in Public Policy and Urban Leadership, triumphantly graduating with a complete 4.0. Cottrell’s capstone project involved instituting a paint recycling program at the university and recycling a total of 700 gallons of paint that would have been discarded otherwise.

“In Fall of 2023, I decided to keep it going and I went back for my Doctorate in Public Policy.” Cottrell described. “All of my degrees fell within the Greenspun School of Public Policy. For this degree, I’m choosing my thesis on creating a horticulture lighting rebate program for cannabis cultivators and incentivizing them to use LED lights instead of high-pressure sodium bulbs. Also, it’ll help protect the energy grid in Nevada.”

As Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities in America and resources such as water are already scarce and monitored, Cottrell’s studies will be surrounding energy management and how the cannabis industry could better adapt to lessen the very burdensome strain on the electrical grid that large-scale cultivation operations often causes.

“Since I want the cannabis industry to keep booming, we need to put in measures and effects that can help mitigate the rising cost of energy and help the grid and also pull off a better product. We already added 40 more consumption lounge licenses and that will be more demand for cannabis. That means either the rate will go up or you’ll have to find ways to increase production.”

Around November of 2021, Cottrell entered this very exciting but admittedly sometimes turbulent industry via the team at the CBD/ THC beverage company Cannalean after meeting the CEO of the brand Chris Johnson at a Chamber of Cannabis meeting. They became fast friends and collaborated on creating the most vital aspects of any business, such as website design and finances. Since that time, the brand has become well-known across the Nevada cannabis market and the brand is present at many cannabis-centric events in town. However, because Cannalean is one of the only Black-owned brands in the Nevada cannabis industry, they’ve faced their fair share of prejudice, even during instances when they’re supposed to be celebrated.

“We had an issue where Cannalean had gotten into a dispensary where they carried us for Black History Month and they decided that our brand is too ‘ethnic’ and doesn’t align with their company values. But the dispensary didn’t realize that I was part of the 100 Black Men organization and I had one of the state senators file a complaint

with the Cannabis Compliance Board. When we did that, 10 other dispensaries decided to pick up our product. For us to be one of the only Black-owned brands and a dispensary had the audacity to say that to us, I felt like we needed to file something against them.”

Cottrell was instrumental in transforming Cannalean into an engaging brand that is ever present at conventions, festivals, and pop ups throughout the Nevada market as well as expansions into entire other states, such as the California-based Spacestation Beverages who will begin working with Cannalean very soon.

“Cannabis beverages are the future. Right now, they’re the fastest growing segment in the cannabis market and we can make the same consistent beverage and flavor profile across the states. We have an interesting product because it’s organic, sugar-free, no seed oils or artificial sweeteners. It’s probably the cleanest beverage on the market.”

Outside the cannabis industry, Cottrell has stayed diligently involved with causes and organizations he’s passionate about. With the consulting and lobbying firm Energy Solutions, he’s a Project Manager and researches regulations on energy efficiency to better strengthen electrical grids throughout the country all the way down to the electrical output of everyday appliances being used. And it’s fitting that his Master’s capstone project was on paint recycling at UNLV, as Cottrell has served with Global Paint for Charity for a commendable 11 years now.

“Paint is the most common hazardous waste that people keep in

31 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

their house and emits poisonous fumes and phosphates into the air. We saw the good that we can do with recycled paint, such as us painting churches and schools all over the world. In total, we’ve recycled over 600,000 gallons of paint and redistributed it to 46 different countries. To be part of that is incredible. And it’s keeping the water clear because 1 gallon of paint can affect 25,000 gallons of water. And when you think about how much paint is put into landfills each year, you learn how hazardous it all is. And paint isn’t biodegradable either.

I’m glad to have a good track record of being a leader in the sustainability space.”

Both Cottrell and Cannalean have grand plans for the next few years. Along with an anticipated graduation date of May 2026, Cannalean has signed their first licensing partnership deal with Happy Eddy, a Black-owned CBD brand based out of Maryland.

“It’s exciting to work with another Black-owned brand, especially one that’s as popular as ours.”

Through the 100 Black Men of Las Vegas organization, Cottrell will be continuing to contribute to the organization’s mission of “empowering African American youth and communities through mentorship, education, and leadership development” through a variety of impactful ways.

“I’m promoting that we do more work into STEM funding for African American students, especially males, from scholarships and the exposure of going to college or with the unions and these construction companies where you can go to trade school and go straight to work from there. The work I do with 100 Black Men is my favorite thing, because I was once one of these kids that got in trouble, but I had an uncle who was a lawyer and my friend’s dad was a member of 100 Black Men, and I got a second chance pretty easily. Because I was assigned community service, I ended up going to South Africa for the first time because of those community service programs. And that’s what led me to actually go to Morehouse College and 100 Black Men ended up giving me a scholarship.

We want to make sure these young Black men know that they have a supporter and someone who can get them internships and someone they can rely on. That’s what I’m really passionate about.”

Cottrell will be presenting at the 100 Black Men’s annual national convention about creating a STEM and science pilot program to promote STEM degrees and courses across all education levels.

For quite a while now, 22Red has separated themselves from the other celebrity-centered brands, not just in their marketing strategies but in the quality of products too. With the Wild Kush preroll, the high standards of 22Red as a brand have certainly been met. Even though it’s technically a hybrid as caryophyllene is the most prevalent terpene, the mixture of farnesene and myrcene certainly determine that this preroll is best suited for a smoke session at the end of the day. Still though, the packaging’s promise of “no trim, no shake, no leaf” is very much guaranteed in the product.

Shavo tried to Gaslight me. He handed me a fat ass preroll and said, “Yo. Hit this blunt. It’s actually a Cuban Cigar.” “I can read, Shavo. Why are you trying to Gaslight me?” I replied back. As I sparked it up, I showed him the label. It says here that this strain is called Cuban Gaslight. Ha, you tried to Cuban Gaslight me. Just call it what it is, Mang. The hash rosin pairs perfectly with the potent flower, but the inclusion of infusion means that this preroll isn’t for casual smokers and it most certainly isn’t for first-time or very rare consumers of cannabis, as they’re looking for a tandem bicycle ride at most and the Connoisseur preroll is a rocket ship ride going straight to the stratosphere.

>>>INTERVIEWS BY rocky hernandez jorrell ellis

What motivated you to join the cannabis industry?

Cannabis has always been a passion of mine so joining the industry just felt natural. I’ve been in the industry since 2018 and I’ve enjoyed every year of it.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned as a budtender?

Never get comfortable with your knowledge because our industry is ever changing and people depend on us to be on top of our game.

What are three characteristics/attributes a budtender must have to be successful?

Patience, thick skin & manners go a long way in this industry.

In your opinion, what benefits will cannabis lounges bring to the industry?

A safe place for tourists to smoke legally, and the potential for other businesses to branch off the lounge idea (comedy club, bowling alley, movie theater) is a cool alternative if you aren’t into alcohol.

What’s your favorite topic to educate customers on?

Terpenes and cannabinoids! It’s 2024, if you’re buying flower and looking for the highest THC percentage… Knowledge is power folks.

Have your smoking habits changed since joining the industry?

Are you more selective of what you smoke? 100% yes! Nothing but solventless concentrates in these lungs when I dab!

What’s your favorite way to consume?

The Puffco Peak Pro is a true game changer!

Do you have any favorite cultivators or brands?

The Grower Circle & Nature’s Chemistry are consistently putting out fire! Wyld gummies are phenomenal as well.

What have you been smoking on?

Rubber Donuts from The Grower Circle.. if you ever get a chance to smoke it you’ll understand why I couldn’t come up with a proper description for it. It’s that good.

shifting the stigma >>>

The Case for Plant Medicine and Wellness

Modern healthcare is obsessed with finding cures, without trying to learn about the root cause of an illness.

Is it really autoimmune disease, OR is it a body that has hit its breaking point with stress, toxic overload and a leaky gut?

Is it a thyroid issue OR is it a body filled with heavy metals and environmental toxins?

Is it a ‘period’ problem OR is it a body overloaded with xenoestrogens, plastics and pesticides?

I’m chatting with a physician who treats patients with seizures. One patient has been on every seizure med and still has them frequently. I brought up Epidiolex as a possibility if natural CBD wasn’t an option. Instead of approaching it with curiosity and looking at the evidence, he compared CBD to arsenic, yet writes the patient a script for opioids without blinking an eye.

The Stigma runs so deep, and we have so much work to do.

Brad endured a severe low back injury and developed degenerative disc disease when he was 16. He already had a pacemaker from age 12, along with two mutations of the MTHFR gene.

His doctors prescribed Antidepressants, Opioids, and Celebrex. When he went in for a double disc replacement, the anesthesiologist could not get him to go under. They approached his mother and told her that her son had an opiate addiction problem. Mom responded back and said, “you mean from the prescription drugs you all prescribed to my son?”

Over time, he became suicidal and unable to work, became unsocial and was just in survival mode. He fought every day to live as the drugs, chronic pain and depression consumed his life. Brad was finally able to break that addiction to prescription drugs and uses cannabis and mushrooms for his pain. He did a hard brain reset with

psilocybin mushrooms. He is able to manage his pain, is clear-headed, productive, no longer suicidal, practicing holistic therapies and wants to live!

Time to Shift the Stigma, Say No to Prescription Drugs and Yes to Plant Medicine (like cannabis and mushrooms) and holistic therapies!

We need to keep educating everybody about the endocannabinoid system until it is as common knowledge as our circulatory system, skeletal system, nervous system and lymphatic system. The Endocannabinoid system is real. It exists in many animals besides humans.

Studies show how psilocybin, the psychedelic in mushrooms, may rewire your brain to ease depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Let’s stop defending against the stigma and start educating about the forgotten wonders of cannabis and mushrooms. Keep showing the good, the need, the evolutionary connection.

Cannabis and mushrooms should be considered on all food pyramids. We should start including it throughout all curriculums where it belongs: in elementary schools, when we learn about biology, anatomy and morphology, in organic chemistry, environmental science when we learn about soil remediation and weather and in political science when we learn about prohibition, industry and government manipulation.

Cannaglobe is a Trusted source for hemp derived cannabis and mushrooms. Check the virtual dispensary link for all the healthy, nano infused products. Begin your journey of health and wellness by searching for the root cause of your illness, research holistic therapies and the healing properties of plant medicine!

STRETCH MARKS: A

PSYCHOLOGIC AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Jean Munson is a true Renaissance woman. Artist, writer, teacher, mentor, business owner, and recently, an improv performer. Born in Guam, Jean moved here in her late teens to attend college. From student to teacher, Jean has been the UNLV Women’s Research Institute Program Coordinator and now runs the NEW Leadership Nevada Program. Through mentorship, events and networking, the program educates women on politics and encourages them to take on leadership roles in that area. Jean recently led the event, GETTING SEEN with ZINES: Asian American & Pacific Islander Storytelling Project, where participants learned the basics of zine storytelling with collage, art, and words. The event was part of the Neon Pacific Initiative.

Jean is also the first Asian-American woman to open a comic book publishing company in Nevada- Plot Twist Publishing and with her partner and husband, published Stretch Marks: A Psychologic Autobiography.

“Can you remember all the marks in your life that stretched you?

Welcome to Stretch Marks, a story of falling in love with my body, my self, and my mind.” The story begins with a young Jean being criticized about her weight by those closest to her. We see how families can make comments that stick with a person their whole life, from the obligation of having to clean her plate of food so not to waste to how Jean was brought up. At a young age, Jean felt that being funny was her shield from criticism. At the age of 14, Jean discovers that her size can be useful in sports. By the age of 16, Jean is desperate to find clothes that she likes, as well as fit. She also struggles with feeling attractive and the pressure of fitting into a digital world of online dating. Then, at the age of 19, Jean finds love. When she is 21, Jeans finds inspiration at a dance class where all sizes of women empower each other. Then, at 22, Jean finds a community where she can speak up about her insecurities for the first time without judgment. Soon, Jean starts believing in herself and develops a self-care routine that helps keep her motivated. Now, she has the courage to believe in herself, her size, and perfect imperfections. “The secret to health is learning how to be happy in all your shades, shapes, and seasons of your life.”

You don’t have to be into graphic novels or comic books to enjoy this personal journey of self love, But if you are, I highly suggest you spark up and kick back with a copy of your own. This book is definitely worth Reading LIT!

Policy Institute Panel Discussion

As cannabis becomes further mainstream and simultaneously further destigmatized, educational institutions are beginning to educationally and financially invest in the future of the cannabis industry and cannabis educators. Far from offering rudimentary programs based only in the universities of California or another state synonymous with cannabis culture, those aspiring cannabis students may find very thorough programs discussing the many crucial regulations and intricacies of working in the American cannabis industry. For instance, multiple universities throughout Michigan offer not only just educational courses into vitally important topics such as cannabis chemistry and cultivation, universities such as Lake Superior State University are offering entire Bachelors degrees in Cannabis Business. In one of the very first states to legalize cannabis recreationally, Colorado has numerous state universities offering educational opportunities that range from a certificate course on medicinal cannabis at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus to a Bachelor of Science in Cannabis Biology and Chemistry at Colorado State University at Pueblo.

"CSU Pueblo is excited to provide the necessary unbiased, scientific education needed as the cannabis industry expands and becomes more regulated." stated Dr. David Lehmpuhl, Dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

What’s particularly interesting about the educationally groundbreaking Bachelor’s degree from CSU Pueblo is that students can pick one of three specific focuses for their studies; Analytical, Natural Products and most notably Hemp Agriculture. On the private education level, the University of Denver offers four non-credit courses taught by Green Flower about working in the exciting yet occasionally turbulent world of the cannabis industry.

Even in prohibitionist states where recreational cannabis won’t become a legal reality for many more years such as North Dakota, their universities are still offering courses that directly cover cannabis or at least teach agricultural subjects and sciences that are certainly transferable towards several different roles in the cannabis industry. Most incredibly, the study of this multi-useful plant has reached the graduate school level, as the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy offers Graduate Studies in Medical Cannabis.

On the riveting local front, the University of Nevada- Las Vegas has been bolstering their cannabis studies programs and discussion panel series on Nevada’s newest industry. Currently, UNLV has two thorough cannabis certificate programs catered to working in this convoluted and strictly regulated industry, one called the

Cannabis Budtender Certificate and the Nevada Medical Cannabis Consultant Certificate.

The university massively expanded upon its unofficial cannabis studies department in November 2023 with the historical creation of the Cannabis Policy Institute. A full-fledged policy institute located in a state that has had legal cannabis for over five years now and is surrounded by many more states with legal cannabis industries of varying levels of success, the CPI has plans and objectives taller than the branches of a sativa plant.

“Our mission is to provide leadership by fostering a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues surrounding cannabis legalization while being mindful of the disparate impacts of past practices and the importance of social equity and justice going forward.” UNLV’s website from the Office of the President reads. As the institute is being led by Riana Durrett, a professor at the Boyd School of Law and a current member of the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board, one can be assured as to how deeply involved and connected the CPI is to the meticulous day-to-day operations and legislation creation of the Nevada cannabis industry.

At the end of March, UNLV’s CPI hosted a thought-provoking and greatly informative panel discussion on many topics impacting the state cannabis industries of not only Nevada but also many other states, some of which are all the way on the East Coast. Filled to the brim with influential and experienced professionals with backgrounds in all topics that pertain to cannabis, one of those notable individuals who works in the local Las Vegas industry is Jardin Premium Cannabis Dispensary’s Chief of Staff Marc Hauser.

Coming from a two and a half-decade career as a graduate of the prestigious Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and dedicated attorney in corporate and business law in Chicago, cannabis was initially a very new subject for Hauser to work in. However, Hauser understood the necessity for quality legal counsel in this nascent yet heavily regulated industry when he began working with the law firm Reed Smith LLP, themselves possessing quite the experience for cannabis business litigation, with clients such as B2B software company LeafLink and this one obscure Canadian musician named Aubrey Drake Graham.

Through his time with this decorated law firm, he began working with the award-winning dispensary Jardin on all matters pertaining to strategic affairs. After leaving law and beginning his own consulting firm, Hauser continued his work with Jardin and from there, Hauser eventually became the full-time Chief of Staff for the illustrious company.

50 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

“I was introduced to the Cannabis Policy Institute and Riana Durrett through Jardin’s CEO Adam Cohen.” Hauser explained. “It sounded fascinating and it was good to see an academic institution taking a serious look at the industry and having academia involved in this industry was another way for it to become more legitimate and mainstream. So Riana and I met up and talked about ways to work together and she reached out to me for this panel to be the moderator. It was a good opportunity to get involved with the CPI and to meet not only people on the panel but also get in front of legislators and regulators and learn more about the Nevada market.”

As for the crucial topics discussed during the March panel discussion, the primary topic discussed above all else is the everpresent thorn in the side of legal operators, that being the illicit market and how the legally operating industry and regulators should need to respond to an unregulated yet widespread and unrelenting problem.

“It’s important to understand how the unlicensed market affects and holds back and competes with the ability of the licensed market to establish itself and build a consumer base. It doesn’t get talked about enough, but it’s one of the biggest issues facing the industry that’s going to be hard to get rid of, even after legalization.”

The subjects revolving around compliance and regulation had quite the expert to discuss them, as another panelist featured was Dr. John Hudak, the director of the Office of Cannabis Policy for the very distant state of Maine. While no one may immediately associate a quaint northeastern state like Maine with a robust cannabis industry, the Pine Tree State’s legal retail operators still brought in a considerable $217 million of total sales in 2023, so the regulatory body that Dr. Hudak oversees has a multi-million dollar industry to regulate.

Another prevalent issue among the cannabis industry that was discussed were “intoxicating hemp” products or the delta-8 and other synthesized cannabinoid products that exist in the grayest of legal gray areas due to the 2018 Farm Bill the descheduling of hemp products while delta-9 products remained Schedule I. Given the unregulated and therefore unmeasured size and scope of this pseudo-industry compared to the strictly regulated legal cannabis industry, legal industry operators are struggling as to the precise manner in which this rampant problem should be resolved.

“There’s effectively this loophole that has probably made this stuff legal. So we talked about the problem of dealing and competing with these intoxicating hemp products. In a lot of states, these products are legal or even order them over the internet. However, they’re not

tested. So how does the legal cannabis market compete with that?”

Given the involvement of both Durrett and Hauser, the topics surrounding regulation of the still somewhat struggling Nevada cannabis industry were inevitably discussed.

“A lot of respect for the CCB and the people on the board, but there’s an acknowledgement there that there’s so much more that can be done to ease some of the regulations in a thoughtful manner and continue to help companies grow in ways that are practical and safe. We need to address real concerns that businesses are facing day-to-day but while also balancing the regulatory and safety concerns that CCB understandably has.”

Hauser felt that the Cannabis Policy Institute hosting this panel discussion was beneficial for numerous reasons. By discussing thoughtful approaches to real-life issues in an academic environment with key legislators and regulators actively present, industry professionals can ideally more expeditiously create policies that benefit both the industry’s overall performance and the safety of consumers.

“Having that opportunity to hear first hand these concerns and problems, it’s helping to change the narrative and further the level of communication. Change is always going to come incrementally in this space and we’ve seen that. We’re seven or eight years into the experiment of state legal adult-use cannabis in Nevada, and it’s a very slow process. We see slow change on the state and certainly on the federal level, but still it’s moving in the right direction. Part of the importance of that is changing the narrative and changing peoples’ attitudes and the way they think about what this industry is and isn’t.

These kinds of conversations and discussions in front of the folks that make these decisions is how things are going to change. In the long run, it’s only going to benefit everybody.”

puff with a purpose >>> Tree of Life Gives Back to Our Local Community

Tree of Life Dispensary innovates ways to give back to the community by partnering with like-minded vendors in the industry and launching their new in-house brand, “Giving Trees” which is dedicated to raising money for health care for those most in need.

Since their inception, Tree of Life Dispensaries have been on a mission to uplift our community in Southern Nevada, with the incredible promise of giving 70% of their profits back to local charities. Of course because profits do not come for any company at the beginning, or even for years, it was incredibly important to the owners of Tree of Life, the Jameson family, to find ways to raise money to give back to the community as soon as they opened their doors. When their first store opened in North Las Vegas in fall 2021 they immediately started raising money with their roundup change program and ATM fee donations in partnership with their ATM vendor, The MoneyBucket, who amazingly agreed to donate 60% of ATM fees. That partnership has raised almost $300,000 in the last two years. The round-up program has raised an additional amount of nearly $120,000. Tree of Life has also begun to give back from its returns and profits, amounting to over $350,000 in donations.

health services to family practice and OB GYN services as well as a completely free pharmacy serving so many thousands in need in our community.

The family at Tree of Life has been ecstatic and grateful for the overwhelming support of their mission by the community reflected in their incredible growth over the last two years. So much support has come directly from the like-minded and like-hearted vendors in the industry. One of the newest innovations at Tree of Life to raise even more money has been to partner with brands who want to give directly to charity. Brands can now create a beautiful marketing display case at a TOL location, and in exchange said brand will donate several thousand dollars a month to Volunteers in Medicine. So far incredible brands like LP Exotics, Pheno Exotics, Reina, Panna, Summa, Mojo, Jasper, and Brandhouse NV have partnered with Tree of Life and Volunteers in Medicine to collectively donate nearly $20,000 a month starting this spring and increasing as more brands join this new marketing/charity initiative. It has been incredible to see so many willing partners want to make giving back to the community a part of doing business.

In the last two and a half years, Tree of Life has given to several incredible causes in the community including local Veterans organizations like Military Vets and First Responders Appreciation Fund, Shade Tree who helps liberate victims of sex trafficking, The Ability Center who host incredible physical programs for special needs folks, Hope Means Nevada who’s mission it is to address suicidal youth in our home, The LGBTQIA Center of Las Vegas, Gender Justice, as well as several others. The biggest beneficiary of Tree of Life’s donations is Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada, our state’s largest completely free medical care clinic serving those in need in our community who do not have any health insurance and who also do not qualify for Medicaid and Medicare. Tree of Life has donated nearly $600,000 to Volunteers in Medicine to administer everything from dental work and mental

In their effort to create even more opportunities to give back within their business, Tree of Life has just launched its’ new in-house flower brand, “Giving Trees”, which will give back a portion of each sale to Volunteers in Medicine. The margins on creating their own in-house brand will enable TOL to give back even more. The “Giving Trees” brand will focus on quality flower products from eighths to bulk oz. packaging, always giving their customers the best values for the best products in the industry. Not only will customers enjoy a premium brand, but they can be happy they are also giving to the healthcare of someone in need in their community.

terpene spotlight >>> Limonene

Terpenes give cannabis that distinctive aroma. You know the aroma we’re talking about…from pineapple, watermelon, blueberry, skunky and earthy scents like pine or mint, terpenes aid in the enjoyment and experience of using cannabis.

The glands that produce cannabinoids like THC and CBD also secrete terpenes. These oils give cannabis its flavor profile. Terpenes were developed in cannabis in order to keep predators at bay while also providing an attractive aroma in which to entice pollinating insects. Weather, soil conditions, age and climate all play a role in how terpenes develop in various strains of cannabis. So far, well over one hundred variations of terpenes have been discovered in the cannabis plant. Terpenes each have a specific type and makeup that is related to specific strains of cannabis. An example of this would be a particular strain and its offshoots will all have the same fragrance profile, or at the very least, a flavor that is in the same vein.

Terpenes interact with other composites in the cannabis plant, such as cannabinoids. Strains which have been bred to contain higher levels of THC, may have reduced levels of other cannabinoids in their profiles. Because of this, there is a belief that terpenes are more important in discerning subtleties between cannabis specimens.

Terpenes have individual effects that are uniquely specific. One type may elevate your mood, another might encourage deep relaxation or even induce sleep. Terpenes can add great depth to the botanic creativity of cultivating and enjoying cannabis. Also, terpenes assist in our body’s capacity to receive the medicinal benefits of cannabinoids, and they make the experience that much more enjoyable.

Limonene is one of the more

prevalent types of terpene. With a citrus aroma, limonene aids in the treatment of depression and anxiety, can help reduce gastric reflux, assists in the absorption of cannabinoids via the digestive system (much like a lemon aperitif before a meal) and provides a general relief of stress. Lemons are light and sunny, and similarly, limonene elevates the mood and promotes a feeling of wellness. Another happy side effect of limonene is its antifungal and antibacterial properties. Think about the use of lemon as a base for cleaning, for detoxifying and freshening- the concept is the same.

Limonene occurs in smaller, trace amounts of a cannabis flower’s composition. Mainly appearing in strains of sativa, there are some indica strains that do feature this terpene as well. If you’ve ever encountered specific strains that take on that pine or citrusy type of fragrance, you’re more than likely in the presence of limonene. The reaction is one of pure bliss, calm, happiness and all the therapeutic benefits of limonene rolled into a pleasant aroma.

Limonene works to help reduce the feelings of paranoia that THC can sometimes produce. It also aids in assisting the body in fighting cancer and other diseases. You can enjoy limonene by selecting strains that have high levels in their composition. However, you can also reap the benefits of limonene by using terpene extracts that can be added to cannabis infused body products, since this terpene has a high absorption rate through the skin. Cannabis concentrates can also be treated with limonene before usage for added benefit. No matter how you choose to enjoy it, limonene is one of the most powerful and beneficial terpenes available and is certain to lighten your mood and heighten your cannabis experience.

Do you have a question about cannabis and wellness? We have the answers. Email your questions to ask.sarah.vcm@gmail.com.

Hi Sarah,

I’ve been seeing more CBG lately. My flower had a small percentage the other day and I also saw a tincture that had CBG. I know about THC and CBD but haven’t really heard of CBG. Can you explain what it is? Thanks Sarah!

Chris

Dear Chris,

Thank you so much for writing in. While CBG may not be as mainstream as THC and CBD, it is definitely a cannabinoid we should know about. CBG is a naturally occurring minor cannabinoid found in both cannabis and hemp. It is non-psychoactive and offers a range of benefits. Research has found CBG can reduce inflammation and pain, increase appetite, and may also help to improve sleep. Furthermore, CBG has neuroprotectant properties that can help protect nerve cells against damage or degeneration. It is a powerhouse cannabinoid that can benefit a range of conditions, as well as helping to maintain our health. CBG can be found in a range of products, including topical, smokable, and ingestible products.

Dear Sarah,

I love reading your column and I’m hoping you have some advice. I struggle with anxiety. I have for many years now. A friend of mine suggested I try cannabis, which I did, and it didn’t go as planned. It amplified my anxiety after I smoked, and I couldn’t wait for the feeling to pass. I hear people say it helps their anxiety, but it didn’t seem to help mine. This might be a long shot, but do you know why that is? And are there any other things I should try besides flower? I wish it worked for me like it does for others.

Sincerely,

Tired of the Anxiety

Dear Tired of the Anxiety, Thank you so much for writing in. While some individuals do get relief from anxiety from

cannabis, others, like yourself, do not. This all has to do with our sensitivities to THC. You could experiment with strains that have lower (12-14%) THC, though they still may potentially induce anxiety. After you take one to two hits, be sure to wait 10 to 15 minutes to see how it will affect you, before partaking in more. Additionally, rather than using THC, CBD may be able to help. Numerous research papers have cited CBD as a great plant-derived option to potentially help patients with anxiety. This is because it interacts with our serotonin receptor (5HT1-A) that helps to reduce our stress and anxiety. Fun fact, pharmaceutical anti-anxiety medications target the same receptor. CBD is a great option to try to alleviate anxiety. Tinctures are great for daily, sustained relief and smokables are ideal for immediate relief, as the effects can be felt in 5 to 10 minutes. While CBD does not offer a cure, it may offer some muchneeded relief.

Dear Sarah,

more cannabinoid receptors in our bodies for the cannabinoids to latch onto; meaning the more pain one feels, the more receptors there are, and the need for more cannabis arises to hit the added receptors. While there is no way to stop this from happening, there are some things we can do to help. I personally love adding kief or concentrate to my flower on really bad pain days. This helps add additional terpenes and THC to bring relief and may help reduce the amount of flower/joints you need. Additionally, be sure to use various routes of administration on high-pain days. This could be topicals, suppositories, smokable products, such as vapes or flower, as well as ingestibles (i.e RSO and tinctures).

Thanks so much for doing this! I have chronic pain and cannabis is my daily medicine. It helps A LOT. However, when I am having a really bad pain flare up, I need a lot more cannabis AND it doesn’t really help as much as other days. I’m assuming the more pain I’m in the more I need, but why is that? Why is it some days a joint can help and other days I need 2 or 3 to get the same relief? Thanks Sarah Danielle

Dear Danielle,

Thank you so much for writing in and I’m happy to help explain why you need more cannabis when your symptoms are heightened. To begin, you are absolutely right, the more pain or symptoms that need relief, the more cannabis we need. Contrary to popular belief, this has nothing to do with tolerance and everything to do with science. When the body has more pain, inflammation, and injury, it naturally creates

SIP, NIBBLE & TRIP: ORANGE OASIS >>>

Psilo-Smoothie - Just in Time for Spring

*Author’s Disclaimer: We do not encourage illegal activity, nor the sale or trade of illegal substances. Check with and adhere to your local laws. We do not claim plant medicine to be a substitute for professional medical care. Always consult with your doctor. The goal of this article is to promote safety and education.

Spring is finally here, and with it, the annual desire to rejuvenate, refresh, and, let's face it, shake off the cobwebs of a long winter. (Or a whole prior year!)

If you’re seeking out some transformation or renewal in your life, you may enjoy the subtle (or not so subtle, depending on your dose) insights that magic mushrooms can bring you. Or, maybe you’re a seasoned psychonaut looking for a new way to enjoy your trip. Whatever the case, this month, we’re bringing you a beautiful new recipe just in time for spring: a magical smoothie perfect for those mornings when you're looking to wake up and tune in.

The Beautiful Relationship Between Citrus & Psilocybin

Many people experience digestional distress when consuming magic mushrooms. The hard coating of the mushroom cell walls is called chitin and can be quite difficult for our stomachs to process, causing discomfort. To metabolize psilocybin, our bodies must first break it down and then convert it into the compound psilocin, which is what the body then absorbs to experience the “trip”. Your stomach acids are responsible for converting psilocybin to psilocin and breaking down chitin, but occasionally, they can use some help.

The citric acid found in oranges has a similar pH to stomach acid, and that means it can also break down chitin and prep the active compounds for easy stomach absorption. However, it’s imperative to note that consuming citric acid with psilocybin will make the experience come on faster and stronger, though the duration of the experience is about 20-40% shorter than eating dried mushrooms the conventional way.

In short, citric acid does the heavy lifting to give you a faster, stronger, shorter trip — but with less nausea and stomach discomfort.

How to Dose Your Smoothie

The first step is to measure out your desired dosage of ground or crushed mushroom:

Microdose: 100mg - 300mg of mushrooms. This is great as an occasional or everyday “vitamin” for those seeking relief from anxiety, depression, and overall emotional wellness. This dose may give you a slight tingle on your skin, an uptick in energy, and a sense of wonder and ease throughout the day. With a microdose, most people function normally about their day, with no impairment.

Low Dose: 300mg - 1 gram. For most people, this dose will give you a little bit of visuals: sharper vision and more vivid colors, as well as introspection and connection to nature and people.

Medium Dose: 1 - 3.5 grams. With this dosage, you’re more likely to experience all of the above, plus a sense of euphoria, distorted visuals,

time warping, synesthesia (hearing colors, seeing sounds) and a deep spiritual connection.

Large Dose: 3.5 grams - 5 grams. This is closer to what’s known as a heroic dose, and is definitely not for first-timers, but experienced psychonauts only. At this dose, having a sober “trip sitter” is advised, as you may experience intense psychedelic effects like hallucination, profound spiritual insights, and the feeling of “everything, everywhere, all at once”.

Note: Anything above a micro or low dose is considered a “trip” dose. Please take caution and do not drive, climb tall ladders or juggle knives.

Remember that the citric acid found in oranges will make the experience stronger, so calculate a slightly lower dosage than normal. You can expect the onset to be between 10-20 minutes, and the duration to last 3-5 hours. (This may be more, depending on your individual metabolism). Always start low and slow. If after an hour, you feel like you want more, consume a little bit more (about 20% of your initial dose).

Orange Oasis Psilo-Smoothie

Ingredients:

2 cups orange juice

ground psilocybin mushrooms (see above for dosage)

1 banana (frozen works great too!)

1 cup frozen berries

1/2 cup yogurt or coconut milk

1 tbsp honey or agave nectar (or to taste)

Steps:

In a blender, combine all ingredients. Blend until smooth.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

Take advantage of opportunities to expand your circle and forge new connections that could benefit you professionally and personally.

CANCER (JUNE 20 – JULY 22)

Throughout May, Mars in Aries squaring your sun sign poses obstacles for you. Your self expression

and inner drive is likely to feel conflicted with the depth of your emotions. Try your best not to bottle your feelings up, they will hold you back from moving forward. This month will be best for clearing the air and confronting long standing relationship issues that have simmered beneath the surface for some time. What may have initially seemed like minor concerns will now demand attention as they escalate into more significant challenges requiring resolution. Although the process of addressing these issues may feel daunting, remember you don’t have to tackle everything at once, but rather focus on making incremental progress.

LEO (JULY 22 – AUGUST 22)

You are feeling a strong pull towards family matters, igniting a desire to deepen connections. During this time, all other concerns will take a backseat as you prioritize the happiness and well being of your loved ones. Your devotion to your family, whether blood or chosen, will shine. If you are lacking these relationships, this month presents a prime opportunity. Embrace social gatherings, open yourself up to new experiences, and allow your authentic self to shine, as delightful encounters await. It’s a bustling time for you with the potential for significant life changing events to unfold. It’s a time of happiness and tranquility for Leo, prompting a natural inclination to immerse yourself in leisure rather than work or school obligations. Allow yourself to bask in the blissful moments of joy that arise.

VIRGO (AUG 22 – SEPT 22)

Expect a month of rewarding challenges, particularly when it comes to expressing your true feelings. You're used to keeping your cards close to your chest. However, it’s essential to confront any concerns or dissatisfaction openly and promptly, rather than allow them to fester and potentially cause complications later on. Each challenge presents an opportunity for growth, providing valuable experience that will prove beneficial in the future. Despite the hurdles, your innate patience serves as a valuable asset, enabling you to navigate these obstacles with resilience. You will want to approach interactions with care and caution, striving to prevent any harm or conflict but there may be instances where direct communication is necessary to expedite resolutions and promote understanding.

A revitalization of romance awaits, with the opportunity to rekindle a spark and experience the exhilarating feeling of falling in love again. For those less attached, you can anticipate a period of flirtation and excitement fueled by your irresistible charisma. The influence of Venus promises prosperity in all aspects of life. Those in relationships will bask in the affection and care of your partners, while single Libras will revel in the heightened attention from the opposite sex, boosting your self assurance and charm. SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

Enjoy floating on cloud 9 this month as it’s a perfect time to nurture relationships and create cherished memories with loved ones. In your romantic endeavors, May offers a chance to strengthen bonds with your partner whereas the single Scorpios find themselves irresistible to others. With no pressing problems to solve, you can fully immerse yourself in the present moment, exuding a radiant aura of positivity that captivates those around you. Creative ideas flow effortlessly and you’re eager to seize new opportunities that propel you forward personally and professionally. However, beware of becoming overly ruthless or self centered in your pursuit of success. Practice a humble approach and balance ambition with empathy to ensure harmonious interactions with colleagues and superiors.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

You are able to navigate various aspects of life with heightened clarity this month, particularly in your relationships. It’s a period of profound personal development for you! Embrace openness to new information and experiences but be mindful of potential oversensitivity. Allow your emotions to flow freely, but exercise discernment as you observe and reflect on them and you will stumble across valuable insights that propel you forward in life. Use this motivation to reassess your priorities and set clear goals to pursue, especially during the Full Moon in Sagittarius on May 23rd. You may find yourself harboring lofty expectations, particularly in your relationships. It’s an opportune time to address and remove any detrimental habits, setting the stage for personal growth and progress.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 20)

You are back to a high performance output, Capricorn! You will experience a surge in self esteem and ambition. Basking in the limelight will become second nature, as you revel in being the center of attention, indifferent to others’ opinions. Driven by relentless determination, you are able to set your sights on goals with unwavering focus, undeterred by any obstacles in your path. You likely find yourself achieving your goals at an accelerated pace in May. Be cautious of the desire to accomplish everything you’ve set out to achieve for the year. Try not to be too self centered and remain mindful of spreading yourself too thin. Find balance by concentrating solely on your aspirations and asking others about theirs.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 18)

Conflicting thought and emotions will have your mind racing. You may find yourself standing at a crossroads, unsure of which path to take. Your romantic relationships are likely to cause the most inner turmoil. Questions about the suitability of different partners arise, triggering memories of past loves and comparisons

between them. The allure of revisiting past connections can block progress with present partners. It’s important to prioritize inner peace during this period and take time for self reflection. A leisurely stroll accompanied by fresh air and gentle exercise can work wonders for restoring balance and rejuvenating your spirit. Connecting with friends over these considerations will help you get it off your chest, replenishing your energy and lifting your mood.

PISCES (FEB 18 – MAR 19)

This month you will experience a profound sense of love and tenderness blossoming within, which promises an abundance of affection and warmth that you graciously share with those around you. With your innate charm and compassionate nature, you effortlessly attract the attention of others who find solace and security in your presence. As you extend your helping hand to others, you’ll find solace and gain valuable insights that shed light on your own relationships, leading to meaningful personal revelations. Although May unfolds as a month of love, it may also bring moments of disappointment or disillusionment if expectations aren't met by your partner. How you navigate these emotions could offer profound insights into the nature of your relationships, prompting introspection and contemplation about your satisfaction and fulfillment.

>>> An Infusion Series with chef chris rodarte

I hope you all enjoyed the recipe from last month's issue. I got to celebrate my birthday recently and also got the chance to give back to the community, teaming up with none other than The Chef Jeff Project here in Las Vegas. Chef Jeff Henderson and I have been waiting for a while now to do a ‘Sushi Bootcamp’ together. I was his guest Chef recently, teaching a group of 10 students plus a couple chefs the basics of sushi. It's such a gratifying experience giving back to a community, both for the love of food and the ability to spark another's creativity. There were a lot of talented kids. Well, potentially young Chefs. Seeing the smiles, laughs, and eagerness to try a new skill brought joy to my soul. It especially hits home because I was a troubled youth. I had to spend time in a juvenile boot camp as a youth being incarcerated for part of my teens. While others went to high school, I went to the school of hard knocks. Life doesn't always have to be that way. So being able to be the person I needed as an adult was nothing short of an honorable experience. I look forward to that chance again, when or if it presents itself. That being said, this month's article is about our ‘Wellness’. Out of all the delicious smoothies I made while on a recent movie gig, this one was a fan favorite for sure. It's absolutely simple to make, just add a dash of love! Plus. It's vegan… finally a drink we can ALL enjoy. So let's get to it…..

Wellness Smoothie

Ingredients:

6-8 pitted dates

12 oz. Silk almond milk (extra protein)

1-2 handfuls of spinach

1 handful of kale

1 oz of Madhava light agave

2 avocado (halved and pitted)

2 scoops of ice cubes

INSTRUCTIONS:

*First you have to make an almond date milk*

Begin with 6-8 dates (pitted) and 12 oz Silk almond milk. Using a Ninja, blend on high until mixed together. Milk will turn a slight brown color. The longer you let it go, the better. Look for very small pieces in the almond milk. This is a moment to add your Madhava light agave or save until finished. Or…if you don’t like dates, it’s a great substitute.

We’re not done yet. Add 2 handfuls of spinach or just do one each of spinach and kale. Both are packed with an incredible

amount of body beneficial nutrition.

Next, add a scoop or two of ice cubes. Feel this one out. Each blender is different.

Add 2-3 avocado cut into quarters, making sure to leave off the skin.

Add 1 scoop of ice cubes. Blend on high until done. You want thick, rich and creamy.

Use a spatula to push everything down the sides and into the shake. Blend one last time.

I hope you all enjoyed this recipe as I have created it for you. This is a personal favorite. Right from my almost everyday life. This started as a smoothie for movie stars. Turns out Jessica and Bonnie really loved it. I’m not gonna lie, it’s one of the best smoothies I’ve had! No, I'm not being biased because I made it. Please enjoy. And, if you would like to infuse this one. Here’s a *Pro-Tip* Add a couple drops of water soluble, infused coconut oil, or decarbed flower. Mahalo!
