MAXINE FENSOM

Merging Cannabis and Sexual Wellness

SEXPO is an interactive lifestyle expo with a rich Australian history, dating all the way back to 1996, when it was created as a forum for women to feel comfortable and empowered about buying adult products or toys. The expo was so successful that the next year, in 1997, it was moved to the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, where it has remained ever since—that is, until now.

SEXPO has recently appointed a USA licensee, a local entrepreneur named Maxine Fensom, founder of Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings. Maxine is so excited to bring the educational adult leisure expo to Las Vegas. I recently sat down with her to hear all about what the event will entail.

STEPHANIE SHEHAN: It’s so great to see you, how’s the wedding biz?

MAXINE FENSOM: The Wedding Business has been fantastic, especially being here in the wedding capital of the world! Cannabis-themed weddings are a novel and memorable experience for couples who want to honor their love for one another and for cannabis – and I love having the honor of being a part of their special day!

As cannabis consumption lounges are starting to open, Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings is beyond excited to finally be able to offer couples a chance to consume cannabis legally during their reception. This has been the missing piece to the most amazing Las Vegas Cannabis Wedding experience possible.

We’re also gearing up for the cannabis holiday, 4/20, which is a popular wedding date for our cannabis-centric couples to tie the knot.

We’ve also just partnered with Beboe, an elegant and chic cannabis brand. They’ve provided Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings with amazing cannabis products that are sophisticated, sleek, and 100% natural for us to give to our cannabis couples after their wedding. The couples who were given these specialized gift bags have been so pleased, the response has been overwhelming.

SS: I bet! No better time for a cannabis wedding than on 4/20. And, you recently embarked into the world of CBD?

MF: Yes, I have some things in the works with CBD that I’m really excited about. My partners and I are crafting a CBD line, “High on Love,” which will include exclusively high-end, full-spectrum products. We’re looking to later expand the CBD component into the culinary realm by hosting upscale dinners and events with

infused delicacies.

SS: All of this, and now SEXPO USA. You are a busy woman.

MF: Yes, I’m so excited to be the USA licensee for SEXPO so that people in the States can experience the magic and excitement that SEXPO has to offer. I really want to put a spotlight on sexual empowerment and confidence for everyone.

SS: Tell me all about it - what can attendees expect?

MF: SEXPO is the world’s largest adult convention. The expo will be interactive, educational, and female-empowering. Since it was originally designed as a space for people to feel comfortable exploring adult leisure, that is the main goal of the three-day event.

The SEXPO convention will encompass everything related to sex, including but not limited to art, fashion, and entertainment. Ultimately, we are focused on three words: health, sexuality, and lifestyle.

The main expo floor will include over 100 premium vendors. We’re going to have several break-out rooms where expert speakers will discuss a variety of sexual wellness topics, such as sexual expression, relationships, and pleasure. There will also be some cannabis components.

SS: I’m really glad to hear that you’ve included sexual wellness and education at the event. Are there any other aspects of the event that you want to mention?

MF: Yes, sexual wellness and education are definitely the main priorities. But that doesn’t mean the event is going to be boring! We are going to have tons of interactive attractions, including our Sex Ed Sanctuary for wellness and education, an on-site Exotics Club, Shadow Theatre, a cannabis glass display, The Sirah Body Paint Immersive Experience, amateur strip competitions, and the Paradise Pool Party.

SS: Sounds like more than the typical adult conventions we’ve seen here in Vegas. When will the event take place?

MF: We’re really excited to make the expo as memorable and exciting for guests as possible. So, we have planned for SEXPO USA to launch on May 9, 2025, and extend until May 11, 2025. I know that’s a long time to wait, so we’re going to hold two separate interactive activations in May and September.

SS: That sounds like it’ll be a really fun weekend for attendees. Are you still looking for vendors?

MF: Yes, absolutely. We are currently accepting applications for vendors, speakers, educators, adult novelty retail vendors, and talent performers. Those interested can email me at maxine@sexpo.com.

SS: And how can readers find out more about SEXPO?

MF: Visit our website, sexpo.com, to see what we have planned for this exciting one-of-a-kind event! Also, check us out on Instagram @sexpousa.

Uniting Music and Cannabis Culture The RYTHM Artist Series >>>

Green Thumb Industries Inc. (GTI), a national cannabis company and owner of RISE Dispensaries and the RYTHM brand, has launched its RYTHM Artist Series, a collection of strains that are chosen (and smoked) by artists spanning multiple genres of music. Inspired by the artists’ lifestyle and brand, each product aligns with their specific tastes, consumption preferences, and desired effects, and is complemented by its own unique strain name and packaging design. The RYTHM Artist Series will feature product launches by talented and passionate artists such as country music star Mitchell Tenpenny, pop-punk band State Champs, blues singer-songwriter Marcus King, and R&B and pop singer Tinashe.

The RYTHM Artist Series brings to life each artist’s genuine connection to cannabis through the creation of their own custom strain, providing a product and experience that they can share with their fans. Building upon its eclectic strain library, the Series empowers consumers to align their music and cannabis tastes, demonstrating a true culmination of the brand’s motto: Find Your RYTHM.

Chief Executive Officer Ben Kovler. “The RYTHM Artist Series is about elevating the authentic relationship artists have with cannabis while bringing fans closer to their favorite artist by smoking the same strain as them. We are excited to partner with great artists to offer premium strains to music and RYTHM fans alike.”

The Series kicked off with country musician Mitchell Tenpenny’s Night Owl Haze, which is now available at local RISE dispensaries. Last month, RISE hosted a Meet and Greet with Mitchell at the Craig Road location which included swag giveaways and a signed guitar raffle. Mitchell Tenpenny, a versatile country artist with over 1.5 billion streams, marks the first collaboration in the series with the debut of Night Owl Haze, named in honor of the Nashville artist’s fan base. The energizing sativa strain pairs notes of bubble gum and earthy pine. Night Owl Haze is accompanied by custom artwork highlighting his passion for music and cannabis. A multi-faceted entertainer, Mitchell Tenpenny recently announced his participation in CMA Entertainer of the Year Luke Combs’ 2024 Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour.

“RYTHM was built on the proven, positive connection between cannabis and music,” said Green Thumb Founder, Chairman and

“Cannabis is synonymous with the production of timeless music across several genres,” said Mitchell Tenpenny. “RYTHM’s desire to fuse art with cannabis in unique and interesting ways made them an ideal partner to bring my Night Owl Haze strain to life. I can’t wait for my fans to smoke it—I love it, and know they will, too.”

Embracing Kava as a Sober Social Alternative >>>

A Q&A with Ash of Lumanai Kava

Disclaimer: We do not encourage illegal activity. Check with and adhere to your local laws. We do not claim psychedelics or plant medicine to be a substitute for professional medical care. Always consult with your doctor. The goal of this article is to promote entertainment, safety and education.

Seduced by the neon glow of the lights of Las Vegas, it's easy to get caught up in the city's famous nightlife. But beyond the downtown bars and champagne dinners, there's a growing movement seeking solace in a different kind of drink—one that promises all the social lubrication with none of the next-day regret. Kava is a root that has been revered for centuries across the South Pacific for its calming effects and use in traditional ceremonies. But for many, like entrepreneur Ash of Luminai Kava, it represents a profound shift towards healthier social rituals.

Ash's own journey from battling alcohol addiction to discovering kava mirrors a broader cultural awakening. Unlike alcohol, the research surrounding kava shows that it’s non-addictive, which makes the transition away from spirits surprisingly smooth. Imagine evenings spent in laughter and conversation, minus the dread of a hangover. This is everyday life in places like Fiji, where the kava bar serves as a communal hub for relaxation and camaraderie, much like local pubs here in the US.

Sobriety's New High - Kava Conversations with Ash

For those who may not be familiar, can you explain what kava is?

Kava is an ancient psychedelic plant medicine that’s been used as a ceremonial drink for over 3000 years. It’s the root of an indigenous plant that was first grown on the islands of Vanuatu, Fiji, and New Guinea and spread throughout the South Pacific. It has anti-inflammatory, mood-

It’s probably because it tastes like bitter dirt water. Before discovering kava, I’d spent some time bartending in LA and was trained by a top mixologist, and after trying it, I thought to myself: What if I could do this with kava instead of booze?

Have you seen kava help people?

The people I’ve turned onto kava have told me that it’s saved their lives. And I know that during the ‘80s, it was largely used in Australia as an alcohol replacement. Personally, kava has helped me thrive as well. After an on-again off-again toxic relationship with alcohol, I quit drinking on Dec 5th of 2020, and it was kava that helped me break up with it for good.

lifting, and anti-anxiety benefits, depending on the strain, and works with your GABA receptors to create a buzz that’s a lot like drinking alcohol. But it doesn’t contain any alcohol. And while it doesn’t taste great, I make it taste better.

Tell us what inspired you to start your kava company.

We spoke with Ash to delve into how kava could redefine social life, and get a glimpse of a lifestyle where hangovers are obsolete and the vibe is perpetually bula (the Fiji version of aloha), especially for those navigating the choppy waters of recovery and searching for a more serene way of life.

Like any good millennial, I was first turned onto Kava from a podcast, and it sounded like something I could use in my life. I’d been in the health, wellness, and supplement space for a while, and I had heard about its medicinal uses, but not its recreational ones. Once I got a hold of some myself, I fell in love with it and wondered why it wasn’t more popular.

Do you think kava makes for a good alcohol replacement in general?

Yes. Kava gives you what you’re looking for in alcohol without many of the unhealthy downsides, and without lowering inhibitions to a point where you would do or say something you regret. It’s a social lubricant and an anxiolytic. And like cannabis, there are a ton of different strains. There are heady kavas and heavy kavas. But the overall effect is relaxing, stress-relieving and mood-lifting. For me it sits somewhere between alcohol and cannabis, and I can see a time in the near future where kava will be sold wherever alcohol is sold.

Are there any misconceptions about kava?

The biggest misconception is in regards to liver damage, and you’ll see this warning propagated across the internet. This misinformation derives from research done in the 1990s by two pharma companies in Germany and Switzerland, where they were extracting the kava plant with alcohol. During this study, concentrated kava was shown

22 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

to cause liver damage when consumed in an alcoholic or acetonic extract. As a result, the plant was banned in the UK, Europe and Canada. But the World Health Organization came out with a study of their own, and found that water-based and noble kava products pose no risk of liver complications.**

Tell us about some of your products.

My premium noble kava flavors include Ginger Honey Lemon, The Kolada (with fresh pineapple and Madagascar vanilla bean), and Raspberry Orange Spice. All of our premium noble kava is hand-pressed without the use of CO2 or solvents and is third party tested for purity. Our non-premium flavors include Goji Cacao (chocolate-covered cherry vibes!), Acai-Biscus, and our Basic Batch. These are made with powdered produce rather than fresh, so they are less expensive, but a big hit among the Gen Z crowd, who are more likely to opt for sober hangouts at clubs and concerts. All products come in reusable glass growlers. With all of my flavors, I didn’t want to bury the bitterness of the kava, but to work with it. Mixology is about complimenting the spirit, not masking it, and I try to improve on every batch.

What’s next for you?

For our bottled drinks, I’m working on a truly sugar-free option. Outside of that, my next goal is to make an instant version of my kava drinks that you can take on the go. Because when you’re sober and you go out, like to a birthday party or a club, you might be the only one not drinking, and that can kind of suck. But with an instant kava mix, you can just mix it with water, and

get a buzz without needing an alcoholic drink.

Where can we find your product?

In Vegas, you can find my product at all Herbally Grounded locations, or order online from anywhere at Lumanai.com. I deliver locally here in Vegas or you can even schedule a pickup.

Thank you for chatting with us, Ash! You can follow Ash’s kava journey on Instagram at @lumanaikava.

Budtender of the Month

Las Vegas

vena woods

budtender at jardin

What motivated you to join the cannabis industry?

My motivation to join the cannabis industry stemmed from the captivating movement among cannabis connoisseurs. When Nevada embraced recreational cannabis, coinciding with my coming of age at 21, I recognized a profound passion and an opportunity to engage in something I truly enjoyed. Cannabis, often regarded as taboo by some, presented itself as a gateway for me to contribute to education and inspire others to explore the manifold wonders of this remarkable plant.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned as a budtender?

Undoubtedly, the most intriguing aspect of my tenure as a budtender has been recognizing the unique ways cannabis interacts with each individual's endocannabinoid system. It's fascinating to witness how cannabis affects us all differently. One person's favorite strain might not resonate with another due to a myriad of factors, such as scent, taste, and effects. This realization underscores the importance of understanding terpenes and their pivotal role. There's a prevailing misconception that THC dominance dictates the entirety of the cannabis experience, but in reality, a well-rounded appreciation encompasses curation, terpenes, and THC content.

In your opinion, what benefits will cannabis lounges bring to the industry?

Cannabis lounges represent a progressive evolution in adult consumption spaces. Particularly in Las Vegas, where tourism thrives, these lounges offer a novel and enjoyable avenue for individuals from non-recreational states to partake legally. By providing a regulated and secure environment, cannabis lounges afford consumers the opportunity to indulge responsibly while enhancing their overall experience.

What’s your favorite topic to educate customers on?

Terpenes hold a special place in my heart when it comes to educating customers. I often emphasize that "terpenes are your best friend." Understanding one's preferences regarding terpenes significantly influences the selection of preferred flower types, ultimately enhancing the overall cannabis experience.

How do you stay educated and up to date on products and industry news?

Remaining actively engaged within the community and fostering connections with fellow industry members is paramount to staying informed. Additionally, I prioritize staying abreast of cannabis news and legislative updates through reputable sources on social media and verified outlets dedicated to cannabis-related information.

Have your smoking habits changed since joining the industry? Are you more selective of what you smoke?

Certainly. My approach to consumption has evolved significantly since entering the industry. Previously, I would indulge in any flower without much consideration for its effects. However, I've come to appreciate the importance of selecting the right strain for the right occasion. As a fervent admirer of terpinolene, I've learned to recognize its uplifting and euphoric qualities, contrasting with my previous affinity for myrcene, which tended to leave me feeling unmotivated. This newfound discernment has allowed me to curate my cannabis experience, ensuring a consistent state of bliss throughout the day.

What’s your favorite way to consume?

Dabbing has emerged as my preferred method of consumption. While I once enjoyed the taste of flower, my palate has since evolved, leading me to savor the rich flavors of concentrated oils. Rosin jams, in particular, captivate me with their robust flavors and gradual yet intense highs, making them a staple in my consumption routine.

Do you have any favorite cultivators or brands?

Certainly. Among my personal favorites are The Grower Circle and MPX, both of which consistently deliver exceptional quality and innovation within the industry.

What have you been smoking on?

Currently, I've been indulging in Dante's Inferno by Tsunami—a choice that never fails to elevate my experience.

Cannabis Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to create an ethical and equitable cannabis industry.

About the National Diversity & Inclusion Cannabis Alliance

The NDICA has been at the forefront of integrating social equity into the cannabis industry, transforming the lives of those adversely affected by the War on Drugs by reducing barriers contributing to the lack of representation of those most impacted by the War on Drugs, including people of color and other marginalized community members.

Some examples of that include: assisting and consulting social equity applicants in their licensing process, helping those that come from marginalized communities gain employment in the cannabis industry, and partnering with companies and organizations to help communities gain a variety of education and resources.

State-Funded Pioneer: By 2019, NDICA earned the distinction of being the first cannabis non-profit to receive state government funding. This support continued in 2020, with Illinois’ backing, marking

NDICA as the first multi-state funded cannabis non-profit organization.

Comprehensive Community Programs: NDICA’s efforts extend beyond advocacy, incorporating violence prevention, job creation, and enrichment programs in TV/ film and music, directly addressing the repercussions of past drug policies.

International Policy: Under Bonita's leadership, the NDICA has not only influenced domestic policy in Hawaii, Detroit, Nebraska, and Ohio but has also made strides internationally, notably advising Korea on recreational cannabis policy.

Is Not a Dirty Word (or New Technology) Remediation >>>

Remediation is not a dirty word (or new technology). Yet, it has sparked new discussion on the topic of “clean” cannabis. The Cannabis Control Board (CCB) is working on a reference for the public that will include all remediation types in response to information presented at a board meeting. Cannabis community members say the responsibility for educating consumers on this topic falls on both the brands and regulating bodies.

The purpose of cannabis remediation is to “clean” dry flower of mold and other harmful contaminants before it’s packaged and sold. Local cultivators say these methods have been used in order to pass state testing regulations in Nevada since 2017. Remediation methods are also relied on by legal states in the Midwest and along the East Coast. Suehiko Ono, director of business development at Hepworth Pura (Milton, NY) and former founder and CEO of EOS Farms (Pittsfield, MA) stated in a 2022 Forbes interview that “anyone who can afford it is going with radiation.” Today, Ono says educational marketing on the topic is “still a huge issue.” There are different ways to remediate flower which is one reason why the topic is highly debated. For example, a medical patient with an immunodeficiency may only want to purchase cannabis that has been remediated in some way. Whereas a recreational user may argue remediated cannabis is disingenuous.

The two most commonly used methods in Nevada are radiofrequency (RF) and gamma irradiation. The RF method sends waves to interact with the flower, enabling water molecules to move. This movement generates heat used to inactivate harmful microbes where water molecules are present. There are concerns that this method can affect the color, smell and potency of the flower. Gamma irradiation sends gamma rays to interact with and pass through the flower, enabling external and internal microbes to be inactivated. This remains the recommended method because it prevents microbes from reactivating during packaging or while sitting on a dispensary shelf. When asked to describe irradiation to an average consumer, Ono stated, ”It is the same as an x-ray at the dentist. When the x-ray is off, there is nothing left over.”

Cannabis is a new industry and not (yet) federally approved which means there have been limited studies in these areas and no longterm data on these methods is available. Cultivators that currently don’t use remediation machines say they have a high degree of control over their grow rooms. Most of these establishments also grow in no-till soil which allows the cannabis plant to fight off harmful pathogens without the use of these methods. If a testing sample fails due to mold or other harmful contaminants, the product is not remediated and therefore not packaged for sale.

30 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

The CCB currently allows use of radiation equipment by Rad Source, Microwave RFC, XRpure and Ziel. There are approximately 24 licensed cannabis establishments with approved radiation machines. A list of these establishments was recently published online and, via email, the CCB confirmed it was provided as a result of a public records request for irradiation devices. “The CCB is working on creating a reference that will include all remediation types,” stated the email.

Cannabis community members agree that a reference will be helpful to consumers, but they also want the CCB to enforce product labeling. NCCR 12.065 covers cannabis treated with radiation but is currently not in effect. It states, “If any cannabis or cannabis product has been treated with radiation at any time, any and all packaging of the irradiated cannabis or cannabis product must include labeling that contains the following statement:

‘NOTICE: This product contains ingredients that have been treated with irradiation’ in bold lettering, along with the Radura symbol as used by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.”

Cannabis companies argue that labeling decontaminated cannabis is unnecessary and misleading, because there are no health or safety issues currently associated with using these methods. Others who are against product labeling, or indifferent to it, point out that this equipment is used by organizations such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and American Red Cross. Until the cultivation, sale and consumption of cannabis is federally legal, not all cannabis facilities or grows will be built the same. As the Vegas market evolves, the community will continue to discuss and debate not whether or not cannabis remediation is safe, but whether or not it is necessary.

The Search is On... Ultimate Stoner Dream Job >>>

As the cannabis industry and ancillary businesses expand into states and markets that no one could have envisioned, the need for direct and personable marketing has become even more important. As opposed to simple yet ultimately forgettable posts about why their products are better, cannabis and cannabis accessories are creating not only viral marketing campaigns that are easily memorable, but multifaceted employment opportunities in this rapidly growing and changing field of the cannabis industry.

Known as the Preroll Experts, the massive cone and wrap producer Custom Cones USA is offering a unique professional opportunity that will not only provide the endlessly fun privilege to review new accessories from one of the many useful brands but also travel opportunities to attend and promote the brands via all-expenses paid trips to such wildly popular events as Outside Lands and MJBizCon. Since there are several brands under the DaySavers umbrella, from the beautifully gothic Smoke Temple to the reliably convenient and clean Fill-A-Blunts to the dozens of fully customizable options from DaySavers itself, the recipient of this job certainly won’t ever be tired of product reviews.

Along with brand ambassadorship and vital networking and professional rapport building, this opportunity will also provide cannabis content creators with hands-on and specialized training with the numerous social media channels that the DaySavers products are advertised on. From the unique ways to create attention-grabbing Instagram reels that showcase the best that DaySavers has to offer or the process in making an interesting TikTok video from a major music festival that will be shared by even larger accounts to the essential subject of website design, the skills that the recipient of this highly golden opportunity will not only make lifetime memories but also develop very transferable and useful skills in social media marketing simultaneously. Especially if a prospective applicant has a professional background in any type of social media marketing in particular and has experience in successful online marketing campaigns, DaySavers highly encourages you to apply.

As the effective marketing of cannabis accessories is still a pretty young subject itself, the unforgettably named Ultimate Stoner Dream Job will give cannabis content creators valuable lessons in this nascent but quickly evolving field of marketing/advertising that will only increase in importance as the cannabis industry itself expands. Even outside of professional skill building and portfolio expansion, the position will be mountains of fun and enjoyment for just about any enthused cannabis aficionado, as the catalog of products that the recipient of the Ultimate Stoner Dream Job will get to review range greatly from blunt tubes to preroll cones and a variety of grinders.

“We are thrilled to be launching our Ultimate Stoner Dream Job campaign in the hopes that we will find a dedicated and one-of-a-kind content creator and social media manager to help us build engaging content on our social media platforms,” said Harrison Bard, Co-Founder and CEO of

DaySavers and Custom Cones USA.

The powerhouse of pre roll cone and wrap production is inviting all types and specialties of content creators and creative artists to apply. Whether you’re a photographer that captures high-definition shots for cannabis brands or a copywriter that perfectly details the relatable and impactful stories behind cannabis brands and their brave mission, DaySavers invites you to apply for the Ultimate Stoner Dream Job. Creativity will undeniably be a cornerstone value and requirement of the Ultimate Stoner Dream Job, so DaySavers encourages anyone with an impressively creative portfolio and background to apply for the entertaining and rewarding position. Bard himself sees this position as an opportunity to expertly combine both steadfast passion and professionalism into a full-time position with a very generous salary that will radiantly shine on any resume.

“If you’re passionate about cannabis and have any kind of creative talent, this may be the job for you. Many people talk about doing what they love, but few actually have the chance to make it a reality. This is a dream opportunity for any cannabis lover!”

The online application for the Ultimate Stoner Dream Job is currently active on DaySavers’ website and will be open through every cannabis consumer’s favorite day, April 20th. Personally, applying for your dream job on the Highest of Holidays couldn’t be any more of a memorable way to celebrate the special day. As DaySavers is a brand that is rapidly expanding, this position will also serve as an exciting opportunity to be a firsthand witness to that growth and expansion of “the most compliant and transparent smoking accessories brand on the market”.

"We are looking for someone who can be an Art Director by day and social media manager and content creator by night. This is the perfect opportunity for a passionate and creative cannabis marketer to join a fastgrowing start-up company!"

mushroom mindset >>> for a Reset

Wow! These Fabulous Fungi are coming out of the ground and causing a positive Mental Health mindset! Not making any claims, but here is what I have found from the research:

Cordyceps: Antioxidant rich. Anti-aging slows tumor growth. Used to treat fatigue, sickness, kidney disease, and low sex drive. Increases the body’s production of ADP (adenosine triphosphate) which delivers energy to the muscles. New research suggests that it may help type 2 diabetes by balancing the blood sugar.

Lions Mane: Protects against dementia. Helps to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Helps to repair nerve damage. Anti-inflammatory. Antioxidant. Immune boosting abilities. Shown to reduce risk of heart disease, cancer, ulcers and diabetes.

Turkey Tail: Native to forests all over the world. Used for thousands of years by Chinese healers. Empowers immunity and contains a protein called TVC, which stimulates and modulates the immune system. Helps to rebound the body after cancer treatments. Heals the gut and digestive system by balancing the gut microbiome.

Suehirotake: “Split-fold mushroom” Best known for its polysaccharide structure SPG. This helps stimulate the immune system, T-cells, NK cells, or natural killer cells in the immune system, supports the liver and helps to maintain the cardiovascular systems overall health.

Agarikon: One of the oldest and longest living mushrooms on the planet. Agarikon mushrooms live to be 80, 90 and 100 years old. The “mushroom of long life,” they have amazing health benefits including helping with cancer, tuberculosis, and many other diseases.

Shiitake: Contains 65% of our daily value of copper, 52% pantothenic acid, 52% selenium and also contains strong compounds having the natural ability to discourage inflammation, tumors, “bad” bacteria, harmful viruses, and, ironically, fungus. B vitamins such as B2, B5 and B6 are part of the package, providing energy by breaking down fats, carbs and proteins.

Maitake: a wild mushroom, grown mostly out of oak trees. Prized for its medical power by Chinese medical practitioners. Packed with healthy nutrients, such as powerful antioxidants, Vitamin B, C and niacin, minerals like iron, zinc, potassium, selenium, protein, amino acids and fiber. Poria: treats and helps manage conditions such as stomach issues, fatigue, exhaustion, tension amnesia, nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, restlessness, painful urination, excessive coughing, diarrhea, sleeplessness, and water retention.

Oyster: Immune system support, Antimicrobial, Antiviral, Anti-Tumor, lowers blood sugar and blood pressure, Anti- Inflammatory properties.

Mesima: Antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Shone to benefit those with eczema. Clears free radicals. Stimulates the immune system. Contains powerful compounds similar to resveratrol, known for slowing the aging process. Suppresses metastasis of cancer cells.

Agaricus Blazei: Anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, boosts the immune system, battles chronic fatigue, adaptogen, anti-aging benefits, aids in digestion helps with blood pressure, cholesterol and arteriosclerosis. Anti-mutagenic and bactericidal.

Nutrient dense superfood, slows the aging process. Helps to lower cholesterol. Lowers blood pressure. Supports the immune system. Fights inflammation. Balances blood sugar, inhibits cancer cell growth, combats stress and fights free radicals.

Reishi: Boosts immune system. Fights viral infections like the flu. Helps lung conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. Heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney and liver disease. HIV, chronic fatigue syndrome, stomach ulcers, herpes, insomnia and certain types of poisoning all benefit from the regular use of Reishi mushroom.

True Tinder Polypore: We know that this fungus, a natural antibiotic, was used as far back as the fifth century BC by Hippocrates to cauterize wounds. Since then, it has been used in China for its medicinal benefits.

Consider trying a good mushroom blend for your health and mental wellness!

Suggestions for Stoney Reading Freaks

NOFX The Hepatitis Bathtub & Other Stories

The Punk Rock Museum turns one year old this month. It took a bit getting the ship up and sailing, but congrats to everyone that made it happen. So I thought for this month's Reading LIT it would be a nice idea to suggest to my stoney reading freaks out there the book of stories that NOFX and the founder of The Punk Rock Museum, Fat Mike, told of their coming together as a band and wreaking havoc on the world of music. The book reads like a sincere, and sincerely, fucked-up VH1 Behind the Music, but with tons of love and compassion. Each band member, Fat Mike, Eric Melvin, Erik "Smelly" Sandin, and Aaron "El Hefe" Abeyta, recollect shared experiences and the evolution of the band, SoCal punks, and punk rock history.

Starting with each band member's formative years of early childhood, we peek into the lives of their families, traumas, and journeys to find each other. It would be Fat Mike, Smelly, and Melvin that started the band, with a handful of members that came and went (their stories are also included) until finally bringing on El Hefe. We discover Fat Mike has some serious dumb luck and mole people that follow him and save his ass from bad things that happen to others. Smelly might not be at the front of the band, but his story shines through in this book. His childhood wasn’t easy and he tells his story with grit and love. Melvin, we find out, was raised on folk music, had a good relationship with his family and like the other two members, lived in Los Angeles. El Hefe grew up in Sacramento living the typical Chicano life. He hustled his ass off doing a variety of illegal activities, was able to study music, and had a successful funk rock band before NOFX.

stories there, including Smelly and Angelo Moore from Fishbone sharing a kiss. Of course all rock-biographies have… sex and drug stories. This book does not disappoint. We get to peep into Fat Mike’s fetishes and there’s enough drugs in the book (and interventions and rehabs) to give Al Jourgensen a run for his money. One of my favorite quotes comes from Smelly, “If I were to make an anti-drug commercial, I wouldn’t bother talking about the potential for prison, poverty, or addiction. I would just show a picture of Paula and explain how drugs cockblocked me that night.” Or Fat Mike considering AA on Christmas day, “Maybe a step or two wouldn’t hurt.”

Throughout their career, NOFX stayed independent even as so many of their punk band friends, Green Day, The Offspring, and Rancid, were gaining mainstream attention. However, money and fame would eventually find them and they played many of the same festivals as their friends, even without a major label backing them.

Fat Mike, Smelly and Melvin share stories of the emerging punk scene brewing in Southern California. A violent, dangerous scene at the time, and that was just the punks. The cops were equally as brutal when they wanted to be. Once the band is together, we get each member's version of shared events. Some are absolutely hilarious and others are crushingly sad. Tales told from inside vans and on dirty floors. Tales of passionate lovers and horrific frenemies. Stories from their first show at Cathay de Grande (the show they were paid $13 to leave) to their first sold out show with a line stretching around the block as well as all the festivals around the world that they played.

The touring stories are usually the meat of all rock-biographies. Fun fact from the book: the only band NOFX ever opened for was Fishbone. Great

Tragedy seems to find the band often. Throughout the book many of their friends pass away. Sadness also hits members as their parents begin to die. We see how death brings some of them close to their parents and how death comes too soon, for a sibling. Then from being kids to having kids, the story comes full circle as each member talks about their children. Smelly has one of the most heartfelt stories about adopting his daughter and how it gave both his parents a chance to be better, loving parents to their granddaughter, than they were to him.

You don’t have to like Fat Mike, NOFX, punk rock, or be a punker to enjoy this book, but if you are, I highly suggest you spark up and kick back with a copy of your own. This book is definitely worth Reading LIT!

You can pick up a copy of NOFX Hepatitis Bathtub & Other Stories at Avantpop Bookstore or online at bookshop.org/shop/avantpop

BLACKOUT 360 >>> Compliant Cannabis Disposal

One of the most crucial duties of cannabis cultivation and packaging is undeniably the proper and compliant destruction of waste products. From the pounds of leaves and stems that are gathered by one harvest cycle, to all the turkey bags of small buds from a METRC lot assigned to be packaged as 8ths that unfortunately didn’t make the cut, waste products pile up rapidly for even the most boutique of cultivators. While this substantial waste that accumulates quicker than the cannabis buds themselves can be cultivated, there comes both a business need and strict regulations into the proper disposal of unused cannabis waste products.

In most practices, a commonly utilized way that cultivation facilities dispose of their cannabis waste is through pouring a certain amount of any number of usually bleach-derived solutions to render all waste product, but especially the smokable buds themselves, as destroyed and nonconsumable unless someone wanted to smoke a bowl of weed that was literally bleached. On paper or to those who haven’t worked in cannabis processing and manufacturing, this may seem like a bit of an overmeasure. However, to anyone familiar with dispensary and cultivation facility security would inform you, break ins and burglaries of dumpsters right outside of cultivation facilities are all too common and can result in future problems and security concerns.

The factor of environmental friendliness and these disposal chemicals’ effects on landfills and nearby ecosystems are also questionable. For an industry trying to appear and operate more “green”, it wouldn’t make environmentalists very elated to know the toxicity and overall danger of some of these chemicals. Even if combined with organic material such as soil or sand, the chemicals could still easily seep through those materials and into the neighboring soils.

Seeing the dire need for a disposal solution that is far more environmentally friendly and less damaging overall than the traditional solutions, cannabis professionals Jonathan and Kiana O’Donnell knew there had to be a cleaner and more efficient way for this important daily task. The two of them bring a double-headed expertise to working in the everchanging cannabis industry, with Kiana previously spent years working in both the retail and cultivation side of operations and Jonathan has a 25-year career in security services and comes from the exciting and oftentimes dangerous world of dispensary security.

“One of my details on that job was overseeing product destruction. At the end of every day, they had to grind their waste into the dumpster.” Jonathan explained. “A number of times while I was

on foot patrol, I was called that there was someone messing around in the gated dumpster area. I went down there several times and I’ve had guns pulled on me because people were trying to break into the dumpster.”

Seeing the need for a cannabis disposal chemical that would deter burglars from the waste dumpsters while also providing a product that is both compliant and eco-friendly, Kiana and Jonathan partnered with plant scientist and researcher Dave Fuhr to create Blackout 360, a water-based disposal chemical that is non-hazardous as well as non-combustible. One of the most notable features of Blackout 360 is that because the solution is entirely free of environmentally damaging chemicals such as isopropyl alcohol and chlorine, Blackout 360’s slogan printed on every bottle is “Turn Your Waste Into Compost”. Moreover, a defining characteristic of their product is the black coating spray that it emits on waste products, rendering them totally inert and clearly indicating which waste products have been sprayed.

“If used in an illegal grow, it’ll stop photosynthesis because it’s black. The other particular enzymes and bacteria in our product will accelerate rapid decomposition.” Jonathan explained. “We also threw an optical brightener in there for oversight agencies, like the CCB, for inspection purposes. Under UV light, it will grow purple.”

Jonathan mentioned the initial reviews of the proprietary product and they were glowing, with clients noting how much more efficient the destruction process is compared to previous methods. With only one gallon of Blackout 360 solution, 43 pounds of organic cannabis waste can be properly and compliantly destroyed, certainly a potency that anyone who’s had to destroy cannabis waste would indeed call efficient.

Along with the water-based and non-toxic mixture of eco-friendly substances that comprise Blackout 360, the product may also decently boost the overall safety of both the cultivation facilities and dispensaries themselves but also woodland communities that are prone to forest fires. One of the many memorable characteristics about the product is that it’s a flame-retardant as

46 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

well, so everyone from independent farmers across the heartland to the United States Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management could find Blackout 360 to be useful.

“This complex mixture of ingredients that comprises the essence of Blackout 360 not only accelerates the decay process of cannabis waste, but also transforms it into a non-flammable substance, thus yielding another unique characteristic and possible application as a fire-retardant product.” the website brilliantly describes. “Since Blackout 360 also contains the additives nitrogen and phosphorus, the soil to which it is applied becomes enriched with regenerative properties, yielding yet another potential use as compost accelerator.”

“The EPA and the Department of Agriculture don’t like the bleaches that are being used (in other sprays),” Kiana said, “they don’t want it in landfills. They don’t want that or the isopropyl it in dumpsters. It’s not only messy, but they don’t want it in landfills to begin with.”

As a product created and designed in Nevada, the Blackout 360 team ensured that the solution would be especially friendly to the notoriously arid and dry, occasionally drought-like climate of the Silver State.

“Why put all these extra chemicals into the ground when it’s not necessary?” Jonathan rhetorically asked. “Why poison the water table with harmful chemicals when we’re on a limited water supply anyway?”

“We believe in being green and clean.” Kiana asserted. “That’s what we think the cannabis industry should be. We believe that it should stay green and clean for not just patients, but growers and sellers alike.”

Blackout 360 has some very defining plans for the upcoming months as the legal cannabis industry continues to expand into corners of America once thought to be impossible. They’ll be hosting a booth at the groundbreaking Emerald Conference hosted by MJBizScience, the paramount convention dedicated to the latest and greatest in interdisciplinary cannabis and psychedelic research and science.

“It’s something we really believe in. We took a leap of faith to work on this, and we truly believe in the product.” Kiana mentioned. “These people are legitimately excited about our product. No one is excited about destruction, but they’re excited about using our product.”

“We’re looking forward to continuing to make products that help speed up the industry.”

Chandler cooks >>> Cannabis Industry Spotlight

chamber of cannabis, political action committee chair

It’s almost a painfully cliche phrase that is endlessly repeated every election season, but the upcoming November elections will undeniably be very crucial for the cannabis industry’s continued success and inevitable expansion. The best example of a worthwhile and extremely profitable expansion would be Florida Amendment 3, a comprehensive measure appearing on the November ballot that would fully legalize cannabis in The Sunshine State. As a state on the national scale, Florida is constantly the butt of many jokes. The Sunshine State is the third most populous state in America, and Amendment 3 would recreationally legalize cannabis for adults in a state with approximately 23 million citizens in total. For a state as increasingly red as Florida, fullscale cannabis legalization would send a strong message of bipartisanship on the issue.

On the federal level, there’s consistently several bills being filed that could radically reform the very prohibitive way that cannabis is dealt with on the federal level. Some of its widespread ramifications are sponsored or otherwise championed by representatives on both sides of the aisle from across the United States who are up for re-election. The topic of rescheduling has also been regularly discussed by the Biden administration, although any White House action on rescheduling has been about as fulfilled as the majority of cannabis reform-related promises that the octogenarian from Delaware ran on.

Even more red than Florida, Nebraska and Idaho both have either medical or recreational legalization measures that are in the signature collection phase. On the election side, there are several important Congressional and Senate races to follow, such as every member of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus being up for re-election. On every conceivable level of government, from the Nevada Legislature all the way up to the White House, there are numerous elections and crucial votes on pivotal pieces of cannabis reform legislation that could greatly alter the future of the greater cannabis industry, medical expansion and even large-scale criminal justice reform.

For a better explanation into the importance of the upcoming November elections as well as strategies that cannabis advocates and professionals alike can take in ensuring that they support cannabis-friendly candidates, I had the honor of speaking with the Chamber of Cannabis’ Political Action Committee Chair and businessman Chandler Cooks.

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Cooks attended the prestigious Grambling State University in Louisiana where he was the unfortunate recipient of numerous cannabis-related

charges, including possession with intent to distribute. Following a lengthy court battle, all charges against Cooks were luckily dropped or sentenced to time served. Still, Cooks personally witnessed “all the injustices of our justice system.”

Upon returning to Las Vegas following that harrowing experience, Cooks gained an advocacy for cannabis reform to ensure that no one would have to go through the unjust ordeal that Cooks and hundreds of thousands others have gone through.

“I really wanted to get engaged and advocate for those who have been through the criminal justice system and probably didn’t have knowledge in law or the best legal mentors. So, they weren’t able to explore their cases as deeply and are probably still in jail for something they should be released on.” Cooks explained. Cooks served various roles for numerous social equity or cannabis reform-focused organizations, such as the Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community and their Cannabis Business School program where he served as the dean of the program. Cooks also led initiatives and worked with organizations to boost attendance at the November polls, such as voter registration drives and doing data work for the Nevada Black Legislative Caucus.

Cooks obtained a very distinguished honor by receiving one of the few social equity licenses for a cannabis consumption lounge in Nevada.

“Seeing my consistency and the consistency with the Chamber of Cannabis and how they’ve been huge advocates for progressive cannabis legislation, it felt like a perfect alignment for what I do and enjoy doing in the industry.”

As the chair of the Political Action Committee, Cooks and the vital committee he leads have many different tactics and approaches they’ll be taking in the months leading up to the many November elections. The committee will likely begin hosting a quarterly series of political roundtable discussions designed to have ongoing dialogue with policy makers on all levels of Nevada government, some of whom are up for re-election, and their constituents to essentially collaborate on future policy creation via the testimonies of those constituents.

48 Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

“It’ll be roundtable discussions where we can ask them certain questions to ensure that they align with the Chamber’s idea and that these candidates are cannabis-friendly and advocates for what we’re trying to push forward.”

The second approach will be the Cannabis Policy Innovation Lab. This plan lives up to its name in innovativeness and will act almost as a public forum for cannabis activists to best determine and discuss the very strategies they use to advocate for reformative measures.

“We want to establish a dynamic and collaborative environment where Chamber of Cannabis members can propose, refine and advocate for progressive cannabis policies. We’ll be going through what it takes to put together legislation, from submitting policy proposals and ideas to refining those policies through workshops and expert consultations. From there, it’ll be more training where we’ll provide resources and advocacy and lobbying. And lastly, doing some policy pitch sessions where members can present their refined policies to a panel of industry leaders.”

On the state level and across the local levels of government for both Clark and Washoe County, there are many crucial races that Cooks recommends paying attention to. From the upcoming Las Vegas mayoral race to numerous Ward and Assembly district elections, there are several races that are featuring candidates who are already elected officials that have consistently supported cannabis reform and efforts to strengthen the usually flourishing Nevada cannabis industry. Two of the Nevada cannabis industry’s most ardent supporters and lawmakers in the Nevada Legislature, Senator Dallas Harris and Speaker of the Nevada Assembly Steve Yeager, are both up for re-election.

One crucial election that should be keenly observed by Nevada cannabis industry professionals in particular would be one of the U.S. Senate seats for Nevada. Currently, Senator Jacky Rosen is up for re-election in November, and the election is likely to get quickly contentious from aspiring Republican candidates. During her first term in the Senate, Rosen has introduced or fully supported numerous bills to assist the cannabis industry against the many daily disadvantages that legal cannabis operators endure due to the restrictive federal policy, such as the SAFER Banking Act and the Fair Access for Cannabis Small Business Act. To date, none of the Republican candidates for the Nevada Senate race have explicitly stated their support for cannabis.

For advocates to stay informed on the candidates on the ballot and their stances on cannabis as well as the important voting and primary dates for activists to remember, Cooks highly recommends attending the upcoming roundtable discussion series. Also, Cooks addressed how different Nevada’s politics are in regards to how accessible one’s elected officials are for communication. He advises directly contacting your representatives to voice their ongoing support for reformative measures.

“Closed mouths don’t get fed. Make sure you’re asking the questions that matter to you and stay active as well. It’s one thing to just vote in June and November, but you have to hold these people accountable. They’re representatives of the people that vote for them, but if the people just vote for them and don’t give them any advice or any feedback on how they should be doing their job, then that’s how politics run amok.”

our erotic journey >>> Sexy Pot Collection

We recently spoke with James, their Director to find out what types of products they offer and how they support sexual wellness.

VEGAS CANNABIS AND WELLNESS: When did you start Our Erotic Journey? Why adult toys?

JAMES: We launched Our Erotic Journey in 2021 after looking at the sexual health and wellness business closely and seeing that although it seemed saturated, there was a void in the space for competitively priced products that don’t compromise on quality.

VCW: The Sexy Pot product is both fun and functional. What other types of products do you offer?

JAMES: We have six product collections - Curious, Sublime, Thrilllz, Lit, Space and Pot (with more being introduced in 2024). We have a line that is inclusive of glow in the dark pleasure products featuring a penis pump and other gadgets, our Space collection is comprised of creatively curated female pleasure products, we truly do have something for everyone.

VCW: How do your products support sexual wellness?

JAMES: All of our products are made of body safe materials. All of our products are designed to aid in either c-stim, g-spot or a-stim arousal and climax thus supporting wellness across all bodies.

VCW: What advice would you give to first-time adult toy shoppers?

JAMES: Do your research online before you go into a store or shop in cyberspace. Walking into a store with thousands of products in front of you can make it difficult to select a toy. Start simple - a vibrator is usually a nice start.

VCW: Do you sell your products in stores, or only online?

JAMES: Both - we have a healthy wholesale business that is supported by some of the best retail chains in the market and just recently launched OurEroticJourney.com

VCW: How can readers connect with your company?

JAMES: We encourage social media outreach IG @ oureroticjourney and X @oej_novelty

Hi Sarah,

Ask Sarah...

Do you have a question about cannabis and wellness? We have the answers. Email your questions to ask.sarah.vcm@gmail.com.

I use cannabis for pain relief as well as nausea from GI issues. I’ve always heard great things about edibles; however, I find they never really work for me. I have tried tinctures, RSO, cookies…you name it, and nothing seems to do much for me, unless I smoke it. I was wondering, do you know why edibles may not work for me, and is there anything else I can do or try besides smoking it? Thanks Sarah! I appreciate you doing this, I hope you can help.

Mary

Hi Mary,

Thank you so much for your question and I am happy to help. When we ingest an edible, it has an extensive first pass metabolism. This causes the concentration of the ingestible to be greatly reduced before it can take effect. The average person absorbs about 6% of the cannabinoids taken. However, when individuals who have gastrointestinal or metabolic disorders take an edible, the concentration of the edible reduces even more so, leaving patients like yourself to feel little to no effect when taking an edible. Though you can add fats to help with absorption, such as MCT oil, with a gastrointestinal disorder, it may not help depending on what the GI issues stem from. Without taking edibles there are some other options that may be able to help beyond smoking. Suppositories are a great choice. CBD suppositories are accessible and have a high absorption rate and fast onset. You can also make your own THC suppositories. Both can help with inflammation, joint pain, muscle tension, abdominal pain, and more. Additionally, you can use a tincture via the route of submucosal administration. This is where you hold the tincture in your mouth for one to two minutes before swallowing. This allows the cannabinoids to absorb into the glands in the mouth and bypass the first pass metabolism, which may help you gain some relief from the tincture. Furthermore, there are also topicals available that can help with targeting a specific area and can be used to ease nausea when applied to the abdomen. I hope this helps you

find some additional relief.

Hi Sarah,

This may be a long stretch, but I’m hoping you may have a suggestion for me. I have back pain and the cold and damp weather is my enemy in the winter months up here in northern Nevada. I use my heating pad almost always when at home, but when I go out, the cold hits my back and causes so much pain. Are there any warming creams or something that I can use for extended relief when I’m out and about? I’m just looking for something that can help counteract the cold when it hits my back. Thanks Sarah!

Hi Todd,

Thank you for reaching out. Though I live in Las Vegas now, I am originally from Wisconsin, and having back pain myself, I completely understand how the cold can wreak havoc on the body. As for topicals that are warming, there are some that can be used, though the warming feeling typically doesn’t last too long. However, they do help offer some relief. When choosing a topical, opt for one made with warming essential oils. These include black pepper, ginger, cardamom, clove bud, rosemary, and juniper berry. You can also choose one with CBD for additional anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits. Additionally, massage candles offer a great level of warmth and relief when applied. While there may not be topicals that bring the sustained warmth to your back that you’re looking for, I do have an option I’d love to suggest that is perfect for on the go: portable heating pads. They are amazing and I started using mine about a year ago. They are wireless and some have car chargers as well, offering on the go, sustained warmth to wherever you may need it. I highly suggest trying one out, especially when dealing with the cold weather. I hope this can help bring the warming relief you need during these winter months.

Hi Sarah,

My 15-year-old cat has some arthritis

and joint pain happening, and it is starting to bother her more lately. I saw that pets could take CBD. I use CBD myself and love the benefits, and was wondering what your opinion was? I was reading that it was safe and could help with my cat’s arthritis possibly and that would be amazing if so. She is my love and I hate seeing her in pain. Oh, and do you have any recommendations on what to get her? There seems to be a lot when I googled. Thank you. Doug

Hi Doug,

Thank you for your question. It’s so hard watching our fur babies develop aches and pains as they age and I hope I can help you find some relief for your cat. My cats and dogs use CBD for an array of concerns, and I can personally attest to how it can help our animals, and science agrees too. Like us, cats and dogs have an endocannabinoid system, allowing CBD to deliver a wide range of benefits to them including reducing inflammation, pain, anxiety, nausea, as well as boosting the immune system. CBD is a great plant-derived option to introduce to our animals as they get older and can help ease discomfort and pain they experience from arthritis and aging. In regard to options, I personally have been using Bailey’s CBD for many years now and love their products. They are high-quality, veterinarian formulated and help our animals with pain, anxiety, and more. I highly recommend their products. I hope CBD brings your cat relief.

A Kava Drink Recipe for the Sober Curious

*Author’s Disclaimer: We do not encourage illegal activity, nor the sale or trade of illegal substances. Check with and adhere to your local laws. We do not claim plant medicine to be a substitute for professional medical care. Always consult with your doctor. The goal of this article is to promote safety and education.

It’s not an uncommon scenario. You’ve had a long day, and all you want to do is wind down. For many craving that end-of-the-day relaxation, having a drink is par for the course. But for those struggling with addiction, this ritual opens up a challenging paradox. According to the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), a staggering 29.5 million people grapple with Alcohol Use Disorder, making the search for an alternative more than just a desire, but a necessity.

Interestingly enough, many individuals struggling with alcohol addiction are now turning to kava as a safer, non-addictive alternative. Kava is a beverage made from the ground roots of the native Pacific Islands kava kava plant. It has long been revered for its calming effects and ability to mimic the relaxation and sociability of alcohol without the morning-after regrets. We discussed the appeal of kava with Jen Gullickson, a Vegas local and founder of Mama's Mush Love, where she teaches others how to grow their own functional mushrooms at home. Jen is not just a local legend but a treasure trove of knowledge and passion. As the Secretary for Decriminalize Nature LV and the Las Vegas Psychedelic Society, she's at the forefront of a movement that's all about exploring safer, more conscious alternatives to conventional mind-altering substances.

Today, she's sharing her special kava recipe, a concoction designed to mellow you out without dimming your sparkle. So, if you've been curious about dipping your toes into the world of kava as a chill alternative to your nightly glass of wine or beer, stick around. Jen's got something brewin' that just might change your evening ritual for good.

From Alcohol to Apothecary

Searching for alternatives to alcohol, Jen found her solace in the soothing arms of kava. "I struggled with alcohol addiction for many years, so for me, it was about finding something that enhanced my life without alcohol,” Jen shares candidly.

Unlike kratom, which she tried initially but found too stimulating for her liking, kava struck a different chord. "Kava is a nighttime drink. It brings a euphoric sensation and a good night's sleep.”

Jen describes her own kava recipe, which she calls BeYouTeaful Dreams, as a "floral comfort" one can rest in, noting that it’s also versatile in how it can be served. "You can enjoy it chilled, where the flavors come together in unity, or hot, where each flavor is distinct," she points out.

When asked who might benefit most from this drink, Jen's enthusiasm shines through. "Anyone trying to explore different avenues of ‘having fun’ without alcohol," she says. "We can party with plants, guys! Let's go make an apothecary and create our own concoctions." She emphasizes the joy and gratitude she feels in discovering alternatives to the norm of alcohol consumption, particularly in a city like Vegas, where drinks aren’t cheap.

Jen sees plants not just as an alternative, but a revelation that offers "so many amazing flavors and health benefits you just don’t get from alcohol." Her journey with kava isn't just a personal victory. It’s an example of the ways that others who struggle with dependency can heal themselves through the use of plant medicines.

BeYouTeaful Dreams Kava Drink Recipe

You can find most of these items at your local health food store.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp dried rose petal flower

1½ tbsp blue lotus flower

½ tbsp lemon balm (cut leaves)

1 tsp kava kava root powder

4 cups hot water

2 tbsp honey (or agave nectar for a vegan drink)

½ lemon squeezed (optional)

Directions:

Add dry ingredients into a small steel steeping ball. Bring 4 cups of water to a light boil, then pour over the steeping ball. Let steep for 4-5 minutes. (Keep in mind that blue lotus becomes more bitter the longer you steep.) Once it reaches a beautiful bluish-green hue, you can remove your steeping ball, and if desired, press out the remaining essences of your herbal mixture. Add honey or agave nectar after steeping to sweeten this drink. Add a squeeze of lemon or garnish with lemon before serving for an extra kick.

Tips:

This drink can be enjoyed both hot or chilled. It’s also best served at night, as kava and blue lotus both aid in relaxation. Feel free to adjust the ingredients to your particular palette and tolerance. Always consult with your doctor before trying new plant medicines, as everybody is different.

Where Cannabis Cultivation Meets Passionate Artistry Kushberry Farms >>>

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Kushberry Farms, a local cannabis cultivation and production facility nestled in North Las Vegas. Stepping into their facility, it became immediately evident that they cherish the art of cannabis cultivation and foster a closeknit community of enthusiasts. Tyler Morgan, the president of Kushberry Farms, expressed proudly, "Everyone here is an artist, and the garden is their canvas."

Founded in 2015, Kushberry Farms embodies Tyler's deep passion for the plant. Working tirelessly alongside his dedicated team, Tyler's journey to cannabis was driven by a profound appreciation for the intricacies of aroma, flavor, flower quality, and growth process, where each element contributes to the final product's essence and healing properties. While Kushberry Farms was first licensed in 2015, they faced numerous obstacles at their facility, including not having road access, electricity, and still needing to have water shipped in. The team persevered, commencing their flower cultivation in 2022 and achieving their inaugural sales milestone during the recent Super Bowl.

Operating within the desert landscape poses its challenges, but Kushberry Farms embraces the natural environment, utilizing sunlight and innovative techniques to nurture their cannabis plants in their state-of-the-art greenhouse facility. They are committed to growing cannabis as naturally as possible, incorporating methods to assist the plants through the harsh desert climate such as, enhancing oxygen levels, relocating the plants as needed for sunlight, and using fresh pure air to dry and cure their plants. Furthermore, their touchless post-harvest drying and curing techniques allow for maximum terpene preservation. Always

adapting and nurturing their plants in harmony with nature's principles, Kushberry Farms emphasizes the therapeutic potential of cannabis and prioritizes terpene-rich strains to tailor to diverse needs. Ryan Laughlin, the director of cultivation, explained, “It is always a learning experience, and we are constantly adapting. We have an array of genetics we experiment with, focusing on growing terpene-rich plants, rather than just focusing on THC.”

Beyond their passion for growing cannabis, Kushberry Farms also prioritizes education and community engagement. Recognizing the medicinal properties cannabis holds; they advocate for informed consumption and strive to make cannabis accessible and affordable to all. Kushberry Farms is not growing cannabis to fight to be on the “top shelf.” Their goal is to grow quality affordable cannabis that can help individuals from all walks of life, whether it be to relieve pain, or enjoy a night out with friends, Kushberry farms is growing a strain for that.

Kushberry Farms isn't merely a workplace or a cultivation facility; it's a hub for passionate individuals committed to harnessing the potential of the cannabis plant. As I toured the facility, it became evident that the owners and management at Kushberry Farms actively work alongside their employees, recognizing and valuing each individual. Every employee we encountered was introduced by name, reflecting a culture of inclusivity and respect. My tour of Kushberry Farms left a lasting impression, from the captivating scents and vibrant plants to the palpable sense of camaraderie. In an industry where passion is paramount, Kushberry Farms stands out as a testament to dedication and excellence, evident in the exceptional quality of their cannabis plants.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

In April, you find yourself deeply connected to parental instincts, experiencing a profound sense of nurturing and care. If parenthood isn’t part of your journey yet, you may find yourself contemplating about starting a family. In general, you are reconnecting with family values this month. As the weather warms, you’ll feel a surge of motivation to engage in various sports and exercises, leading to improvements in your posture and overall health. Remember to prioritize rest and nourishment to sustain this positive momentum. Despite these positive aspects, you may find yourself grappling with inexplicable melancholy. While there may not be a clear cause for these feelings, it’s important to acknowledge them and practice self-compassion. Know that this emotional phase is transient and focus on nurturing yourself, too.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 20)

Balancing work and personal life will pose a challenge, with professional responsibilities dominating your thoughts even outside the workplace. You are infused with a strong drive for professional success and financial gain. Your work ethic is commendable as you pour your energy into spending long hours dedicated to your craft. While initially managing the workload might seem feasible, be mindful of potential repercussions such as migraines or back pain. Prioritize time to rest as excessive work may take a toll on your progress. While you may reap significant financial rewards during this period, it’s advisable to take caution in monetary matters. Mercury retrograde from the 1st to the 25th will work against the success of any major investments, instead focus on saving for future stability.

Things continue to work in your favor and you are propelled by an unwavering determination to pursue your goals. You will even be recognized by superiors leading to a well deserved boost in self confidence. You’re doing so well that you

may attract some haters who covet your success. While their attention will initially flatter you, it may also evoke a need for extra support as you navigate these dynamics. You are very busy this month as your exceptional performance presents new opportunities. Be aware of impulsivity that may cause frustration and strain on relationships. It’s important to approach situations with patience and understanding, recognizing the value of maintaining harmonious connections amidst life’s excitement.

PISCES (FEB 18 – MAR 19)

In April, you will experience a profound thirst for knowledge and learning, with a remarkable capacity to absorb vast amounts of information. This presents a unique opportunity to invest your time in exploring subjects or skills that have piqued your curiosity. As you embrace the challenge of intellectual growth, the planets also align for a surge of creativity previously untapped. Embrace this inspiration by exploring artistic activities allowing your imagination to flourish in unexpected ways. You may find yourself inadvertently avoiding meaningful connections as you are distracted by your pursuits, which could jeopardize new friendships. Remain mindful of your impact on those around you and strive for balance between focusing on yourself and others. support.

Elevated Coctel de Camaron with a CBD-infused Mangonada

Spring is finally here and the weather is warming up. With Cinco de Mayo around the corner it’s time to celebrate and we are bringing you two Mexican traditions you can make in your kitchen.

Angel loves to make slushies and smoothies for her son, and mocktail mangonada is one of their favorites. She often infuses her portion with CBD always saying how great they taste and how amazing they make her feel.

I love shrimp cocktails, but when I was working at a cantina last summer I fell madly in love with the Mexican version. Cocktail de Camaron can be made in several ways, but I love this recipe, and adding cannabis takes it to another level.

Enjoy, and as always Bon Appetit!

COCTEL DE CAMARON

INGREDIENTS:

2 diced tomatoes (chopped)

2 avocados (deseeded and sliced)

4 garlic cloves minced tip: You could use a tablespoon & ½ of jar minced garlic

1 medium white onion (chopped)

1 jalapeno (diced & seeded)

1 pound of Gulf shrimp fresh or Frozen tip: if you use fresh (devein and steam lightly)

½ bunch fresh (organic) Cilantro

¼ cup fresh lime juice

¼ cup hot sauce

2 tablespoons CBD or THC olive oil

Pinch of salt

Ground black pepper

Chips of your choice

MANGONADA

INGREDIENTS:

5 large ripe mangoes peel, pitt, and cut into ½-inch pieces or 2½ pounds frozen mango, defrosted ¼ cup fresh lime juice (from 2 fresh limes)

1½ cups cold water, or as needed

¼ cup CBD infused Agave

¾ to 1 cup chamoy

Tajín, to taste

4 tamarind candy straws (optional)

PREPARATION:

Place 5 cups of mango in a blender, reserving the remaining mango. Add the CBD CBD-infused agave, lime juice, and ¾ cup cold water to the blender, and blend on medium-high speed until puréed. Blend in additional water, adding ¼ cup at a time, until the mango mixture reaches a good consistency.

Chill mango mixture, covered, in refrigerator until ready to serve. For a colder mangonada, place the mixture into the freezer until it has the consistency of a slushy.

To serve, pour or scoop about ½ cup of mango mixture into each glass and add about cup reserved mango to each glass, followed by 1½ to 2 tablespoons chamoy and a generous sprinkle of Tajín.

Repeat with the remaining mango mixture, mango pieces, chamoy, and a final sprinkling of Tajín on top.

Garnish each glass with a tamarind candy straw, if using, and a spoon. Serve immediately.

>>> An Infusion Series with chef chris rodarte

What’s up all you Stoner’s and Stonette’s! This month I decided to keep it simple with a delicious and infused pasta dish. I recently got the opportunity to work with a James Beard award winning Chef on a movie catering gig here in Las Vegas. It was a movie for Sony Pictures Entertainment and we made food for the VIPs, production team and executives. It was a great experience for professional growth as a Chef. Learning how the movie industry operates when it comes down to feeding its cast members. One night we even got asked to make food for the entire crew, we fed 180 people in just over 2 hours. Talk about intense. We learned a lot about ourselves too - long nights as this film was shot on the Las Vegas Strip at night. Turns out, that film was Marvel’s Venom 3, which should be out in November. A culinary experience I will truly never forget. Seeing as how I had some leftover pasta, I decided to create this meal with those ingredients. Now let’s get to it!

Booshi's Bacon Carbonara

Ingredients:

1 package of Bucatini

4 oz heavy whipping cream

4 oz Parmesan Reggiano

4 oz Pecorino Romano

1 package of bacon

3-4 pads of cannabutter

Pepper

1 oz chopped garlic

Chopped parsley

4-5 eggs (3 yolks only)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Start by cooking your Bucatini pasta per your box’s instructions. These types of noodles take a little longer to cook so just be patient (save 1 cup of pasta water.) While you're waiting for the pasta to cook, in a large bowl, mix your eggs with a whisk, and add just a dash or two of cream. Cream is optional as a true carbonara does not require it. I add it for color and flavor. Mix your grated cheeses in as well. Now that you have done that, slice your bacon into thin strips, like little batons. Use about half of the package depending upon how many plates you are deciding to make. Be sure to put your prepared bacon into a medium-high heat saute pan and cook until done. Add your cannabutter and let it mix into the bacon/fat combo. By this time your pasta should be ready. Take out of the water. I hope you saved some! Then, while

warm, place your pasta into the bacon and its fats. Stir until everything is properly coated. Pour everything into your large bowl with the egg/cheese mixture. Add 1⁄2 cup of your pasta water. Stir vigorously together adding your garlic at this point to your liking. Continue to mix until the watery mixture turns into a beautiful cream sauce. Then, serve immediately! Sprinkle with more grated cheese and finish with some chopped parsley and some pepper to taste. You have just made a very nice, infused dish! Hey Mambo, Pasta Italiano! This one’s for you Luchthanks for having me on the team!
