The Women's Issue This month we celebrate our second annual womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s issue. Featuring articles that relate to the medical issues that women face, spotlights on local women doing big things in the cannabis industry, cool products that the girls will love, and a delicious recipe from Chef Misty, this issue is chock full of useful information. Women are powerful beings. Personally, professionally, in the home and outside the home typically women have the ability to achieve whatever they want when they put their minds to it. The momentum that arises when women unite with one another to make moves and initiate change is unstoppable. Connecting with other amazing women who share similar thoughts and experiences is of great importance. Being honest and authentic with each other builds relationships and establishes bonds that many times are life long. As women, please remember, your daughters, granddaughters and other young women are watching and learning how to have successful interactions with fellow women. Please teach them to value these relationships and to be strong, independent thinkers who are not afraid to stand up for themselves as well as for what they believe in. Be the woman that lifts up other women, be a resource for other women, and offer encouragement and support to other women whenever possible. Happy Motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day!

Meet Priscilla Vilchis the

ften compared to the “Queen of the South”, this Queen is ruling marijuana the legal way. She’s a visionary with a strong personality, a powerful Latina and courageous “Queen’’ of a cannabis empire. It’s no wonder, Priscilla Vilchis, CEO of Premium Produce, is so often compared to Sándra Ávila Beltran, the real-life Mexican drug cartel leader who inspired USA Network and Telemundo’s narcodrama series, Queen of the South. However, beyond the beauty and brains, there is a big difference between these two ‘Queens’: Vilchis has a throne in the legal marijuana kingdom. An empire that was built with hard work; without the bloodshed and ruthless actions in the era of the Queen of the South. Priscilla Vilchis, coined by the media as the “Queen of the Desert”, is a self-made magnate who dropped out of college to pursue a business in the healthcare industry. By age 21, she had grown and managed multi-million dollar enterprises for some of Southern California’s top physicians, helping them navigate regulations within the healthcare industry. This experience not only made her successful at such a young age, but it also gave her a firsthand look at the opioid epidemic and consequently a new purpose in life: Get medical marijuana reimbursed by insurance carriers. “I knew I had to do something to end this crisis, so I started to research pain management alternatives and that’s when I came across medical marijuana,” Vilchis remembers, “I called my lawyer and I told him to find the state with the most enlightened cannabis laws and within months we filed to invest in Las Vegas, Nevada.” All odds were against Vilchis. She was up against men, billionaires and entrepreneurs who had been in business longer than she’d been alive. Nonetheless in 2014, Vilchis became the youngest and first Latina with licenses to produce and cultivate marijuana in the Silver State and in 2017 was the first female to obtain several cannabis licenses in California. Vilchis pragmatism has enabled her to thrive in an industry that is still illegal federally, and very much a male-dominated field. Her tenacity to push forward with her idea to enter the industry, even after being dismissed over and over again, her assertiveness and self-confidence in a room full of men are qualities that have allowed Vilchis to break the glass ceiling.

“The cannabis bud is female for a reason.” Vilchis says with a grin.

It’s not a secret that a Queen cannot rule an empire all by herself, and through the trials and errors, she always had people by her side: her familia. “I grew up in a strict Mexican-American Catholic home and the use of drugs was highly frowned upon. I was terrified of marijuana growing up,” Vilchis recalls, “It wasn’t until I was an adult that I began to see it’s benefits and when I told my parents I was going to invest in the cannabis industry, they were skeptical but easy to convince, because I had already proven to them that I was an intelligent businesswoman and they were open to hear my plans and how it could change the world.” Today, most of her staff is made up of her immediate family. From her father working security at the facility, her mother running the books and her sister the office, to her cousin being her right hand man and her brother-in-law managing the cultivation side of the business. Vilchis also recently released her innovative cannabis line, Reina, which means Queen in Spanish, packaged in luxurious black and gold glass containers with the sophistication and minimalism of high-end fashion brands and sexy curves. Reina is favorited by seasoned cannabis connoisseurs and tourists who enjoy the finer things in life. “It’s a legacy in the making,” states the Queen of the Desert. Vilchis’ Reina brand consists of many popular strains like Ghost Train Haze, vape pens, lip balms, and within a few weeks there will lubricants, topicals and much more at Planet 13, Nevada Made and the Grove in Las Vegas and Henderson. “A Full-Spectrum CBD line is coming soon. We just purchased the hemp processing facility and we are ready to take our product line from the dispensaries to your local grocery store,” says Vilchis, “This is only the beginning. We are going to revolutionize this industry and keep paving the road for future female cannabis queens.”

Up close and personal with Priscilla Vilchis: Tahoe Cannabis Magazine: How did you get your start in the cannabis industry? Priscilla Vilchis: I got my start in the healthcare industry managing physicians throughout Southern California and rapidly expanded to other states. While working in healthcare, I saw that the opioid epidemic had become a serious issue afflicting the U.S. I decided to enter the cannabis industry after

TCM: As a Latino woman, what skepticism did you encounter from your friends and family in California as you embarked on this journey? PV: At first, my family and friends were skeptical of me entering the industry. Coming from a religious Latino family, I was always told marijuana was evil and I would die if I used it. After sitting down with my family and explaining how cannabis was beneficial for patients suffering from debilitating diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, and chronic pain, I was able to get them on board and had their full support. TCM: How does it feel to be the first licensed, female minority in LA County? What licenses do you hold there? PV: It feels amazing to be a trailblazer in this industry for women and minorities. I currently hold four licenses in Lynwood, California: Cultivation, Manufacturing, Distribution, and Delivery licenses. TCM: And now, you are the youngest, female minority to be licensed in Nevada, what challenges did you encounter while going through the Nevada licensing process? What licenses do you hold? PV: In Nevada, I am duallicensed for cultivation and production. One of the biggest challenges I had to face in Nevada was purchasing my state-of-the-art Las

Vegas facility. Banks were unwilling to finance a cannabis company because of the outdated federal prohibition. I purchased the facility myself for $2million in cash, and closed escrow in 15 days. That day is now known as the “2 million dollar day.”

I learned that cannabis had many therapeutic effects and could be used as an alternative medication for many health ailments. My goal is to get medical cannabis reimbursable by health insurance systems.

TCM: Tell us about your cultivation facility here in Nevada. PV: My Nevada facility is 25,000 square feet and currently has 5 operational cultivation rooms. The building features a custom-made environmental control system which cost more than $1 million to purchase and install. It controls temperature, humidity, airflow, monitors irrigation, and warns staff when grow room lighting is uneven and lights need to be changed. TCM: Tell us about your product lineup here in Nevada. PV: We are currently offering high-quality cannabis flower, pre-rolls, a sleek assortment of cannabis vape pens, THC lip balm, and have plans to add more products to our lineup in the upcoming months. TCM: What advice would you give to women and/ or minorities entering the cannabis space? PV: Always see yourself as an equal at the table, and never let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do. Work hard and always deliver on your promises – success will follow. Feed off the support of your friends and family; surround yourself with others who also dream big. TCM: What motivates you?

PV: It is motivating to be an inspiration to others who are like myself and in pursuit of their own goals. To be a trailblazer and break that glass-ceiling for minority, female entrepreneurs everywhere is truly fulfilling. I am paving the way for future female entrepreneurs, and have proven that my age, gender, and race have not negatively affected my determination to achieve my goals. TCM: Biggest hurdles you have faced in the industry? PV: The largest hurdle I’ve had to face is not having any support from the banks. This makes it extremely difficult as a business-owner when you must deal in cash and don’t have access to traditional services such as loans. I

am lucky to have been well capitalized when applying for my licenses, but that is not always the case. You must do your due diligence in understanding all regulations when entering the industry. TCM: What can we expect from you and Premium Produce in the future? PV: You can expect to see our Reina branded cannabis products in dispensaries throughout Nevada. We have plans to add our own line of CBD wellness products as well. We will be dropping our Reina CBD full spectrum line within the next couple of weeks. We will also begin building out a new facility in Lynwood, CA.

THE NEVADA LEGISLATURE

NEWLY INTRODUCED MARIJUANA BILLS WOULD VACATE CONVICTIONS AND SEAL INDIVIDUALS’ COURT RECORDS

s the 2019 Nevada Legislative session moves past the hallway point, there are two bills currently before the Nevada Legislature that could dramatically affect businesses engaged in the Nevada cannabis industry. Cannabis companies have longed to hire individuals convicted of minor marijuana offenses, but were prohibited from doing so due to current laws on the books. If passed, Senate Bill 434 would revise Nevada statute by providing for the vacating of certain judgments of conviction and sealing of certain individuals’ records relating to their

marijuana convictions. S.B. 434 would also deny prohibiting employment of individuals because of the presence of marijuana detected in preemployment screening. “This would be great news, not only for individuals seeking employment, but also for employers like me struggling to find qualified people to fill company positions on all levels,” said Kema Ogden, Nevada’s first female minority owner of a cannabis dispensary and co-owner of Top Notch-The Health Center, a cannabis dispensary and cultivation business in Southern Nevada. “This common-sense legislation is what’s needed, so the marijuana industry in Nevada can continue to grow and

prosper, enabling companies like mine to continue earmarking money for our community schools.” Assembly Bill 346 is another legislative proposal that would revise provisions governing health care and childcare facilities. It would remove the prohibition on persons convicted of certain activities related to the use or possession of marijuana. The Nevada Legislature needs to pass these two bills and follow the leads of San Francisco and Los Angeles that have recently taken steps to expunge mass records of prior marijuana-related charges, which is expected to result in vacating of approximately 60,000

convictions in the two cities. The Missouri House of Representatives recently approved a bill to expunge marijuana records. And in the City of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock has ordered a citywide effort to vacate and expunge low-level marijuana convictions. “Nevada needs to get on the bandwagon like these states,” said Ogden, who is also a board member of the national nonprofit organization Doctors for Cannabis Regulation. “Expunging records would enable companies like mine to create opportunities for hundreds of people to have employment options. I urge Nevadans to encourage their state legislators to pass these marijuana bills and any others that will help the cannabis industry continue to grow throughout Nevada.”

hanna Perry grew up, like most of us, entrenched in the underground cannabis scene. As a young adult, purchasing cannabis illegally was the only way to obtain it. And Perry, like most, was no stranger to the culture and lingo required to buy and sell.

Fast forward two decades and Perry, with over ten years of experience in the cannabis sector, has found her calling in hemp. And ironically, the product she produces which she refers to as a hemp, plantbased botanical oil is simply a supplement that she and many others have been making in kitchens for years. The urgency to formulate her hemp-based product came as Perry’s mother was given a cancer diagnosis. After converting her mother to a high B-17, no-meat, no-sugar diet with the addition of a cannabis oil regimen, Perry knew there was still something missing. Her belief in the power of a plant based hemp supplement loaded with terpenes and cannabinoids, along with her access to the right plant strains prompted her to manufacture. Perry realized that many of the products out there did not contain the amount of cannabinoids indicated on the label. according to Perry, has led to an 80% return customer rate. In wrapping things up, we briefly discussed the obstacles Perry has experienced as a woman in this industry. According to Perry, “In most industries, men, and the things that they represent are often times celebrated. For example, men using beautiful and sometimes sexually suggestive women to promote themselves or their companies are praised but when I, as a woman, use my own beauty and sexuality to promote myself and my business, it is typically frowned upon.” As a woman with a strong, outspoken presence, it is Perry’s hope that this industry can pave the way for an abundance of women leaders. And she encourages women within all industries to know their worth and really know what they can do in this world. As Perry notes, “For many years, women have been quiet and accepted what has been handed to them. We, as women don’t ask for what we want and we certainly fail to demand what we deserve. And simply, when we don’t ask, we don’t get.” Within this new, legal cannabis industry though, we are seeing more and more women step into roles which in the past were male dominated. CANNABINOID SPOTLIGHT: The Cannabinoid that Dreams are Made of

CBN has been shown to be beneficial in analgesic effectiveness. It activates the release of peptides from sensory nerves. Think about all the ways in which a little extra sleep and an analgesic can help alleviate your pain (every month…ahem). Yeah, CBN is good for that, too.

Disease Fighter

By now, we’re all (hopefully) familiar with the major cannabinoids found within the cannabis plant. Within that list of over 100, heavy hitters like CBD, THC and CBG seem to get a lot of attention and are often sought out when selecting flower strains and benefits for all that ails us. We know that THC gets you high, but did you know that CBN (cannabinol) develops as an aftereffect of degrading THC? When THC has been exposed to oxygen or heat, CBN develops. Ever leave your weed out in the open? You can be sure it has developed higher levels of CBN as a result. When you ingest old weed, you typically feel a stronger effect- that’s due to the CBN that has materialized within the bud. Fret not, however. CBN is good for you! Since the May issue of Vegas Cannabis Magazine is dedicated to the women who help make this industry shine, we thought we’d break down a few ways in which CBN benefits women (and men) with the unique ability to help ALL of us do what we need to do in order to shine.

Sleep

There is some research that points to CBN as having mildly psychoactive effects. The endocannabinoid system works with our hormones, and CBN interacts with our endocannabinoid system. Once hormones are stimulated, it changes how we feel and how we respond physically, mentally and emotionally. In this way, CBN has strong sedative abilities that are heightened when combined with THC. CBN helps to extend sleep time and has the capacity to knock us out, cold. That’s great news for parents who are sleep deprived, students who are studying late into the wee hours, working professionals who are burning it at both ends, or really any of us who struggle to get enough sleep.

Cancer, glaucoma, seizures, osteoporosis, bone disorders- what do they all have in common? These are some of the most prevalent conditions affecting women (and everyone) today. While traditional pharmaceutical medicine has proven to help prevent and treat these rampant conditions, plant medicine (a.k.a. cannabis) is showing more and more to be a massively beneficial and successful way to attack diseases and the side effects that come along with them. CBN specifically can reduce the risk of glaucoma and halt its development, it can prolong seizure dormancy, it can support bone health and help to prevent bone disorders, and much more.

Appetite Stimulant

All jokes about munchies aside, truly, think about why it is important for cannabinoids like CBN to be able to stimulate the appetite. HIV/AIDS patients, cancer patients, people suffering from panic and anxiety so crippling that they get nauseous at the thought of food, women (and men) recovering from eating disorders, all benefit from the healing and appetite activating effects that CBN-heavy strains contain. Chemotherapy patients who struggle to gain an appetite especially can turn to CBN to assist in regaining proper eating habits and the nutrition essential to help the body heal. That’s pretty amazing, if you ask us.

Anti-Inflammatory

Similar to CBD, CBN has anti-inflammatory properties that make it a natural choice for dealing with inflammation in the body as a result of injury, stress, muscle recovery (all you gym rats out there, this one’s for you!) and health conditions which put strain on our systems and force them out of whack. CBN works wonders as a topical antibiotic, as well. CBN heavy strains generally tend to be indicas, as they often encourage sleep and recovery. Grab some CBN heavy flower, tincture or edible and drift off knowing that you’re healing your body and mind from the inside out. Like the great Chaka Khan once proclaimed, “I’m every woman, it’s all in me”.

TALES FROM THE CRIP

Musings from a Hospital Bed By nature, I tend to be nosy. I try hard not to be obnoxious about things and holler an incessant stream of questions at people. Rather, I have always found that if I keep my mouth shut and my eyes open I can determine far more information about the given circumstances than if I were to pepper all and company present with an undying torrent of questions.

Marijuana offers tremendous symptom relief for many drugs, but that does not make it harmless. If you are sick, chronically or otherwise, mention the fact that you use marijuana to your doctor when you are getting a medication prescribed.

It should be noted, however, that this practice does not always work out as well for me as I would have it; in fact, sometimes questions are actually a good thing, at least if you want to determine the correct information. I recently enjoyed the opportunity of spending three fun-filled days in a local hospital. I’ve discussed my MS in the past (like, literally every month) and I had one pisser of a relapse a few weeks back. I will spare you the details, but suffice it to say that I was the human equivalent of a bowl of Jell-O. Three days of medicine/ insanity hormone sorted me nicely, but it left me with plenty of time to do what I do best: think about shit and talk to people. I did not have a roommate, but I had more nurses and nursing assistants and therapists and everybody else passing through my room that I got to interact with a nice cross-section of the hospital staff. To work in a hospital or in healthcare in general, you must love your fellow man. Sure, we have all met personnel in doctors’ offices and other assorted medical facilities who look like they have a tart dill pickle wedged in their backside, but if you are working in a hospital, you are likely a caring, selfless and healing person. So, me being me, I had to get in everybody’s face and ask them their opinion on marijuana, recreational, medical or otherwise.

Responses varied. Recreationally speaking, most of the people who I spoke with didn't see much difference between marijuana and beer or other types of alcohol. Medically speaking, however, it seems that attaching the word “medical” to anything marijuana-related made patients perfectly justified in self-treatment the hospital. I had to sign a waiver stating that I would not smoke, ingest or vaporize anything not explicitly provided by the hospital. Why do you suppose I had to sign such a waiver?

I am quite surprised by how conflicted upon this matter I find myself. On the one hand, if marijuana helps your symptoms and conditions, then you should have that right regardless of location. On the other hand, you are in the hospital! This is not a resort, nor is it your bedroom at home or wherever you usually imbibe. If you are sick enough to earn hospital admission (no easy feat), maybe you should leave the weed alone for a while until they get you sorted out. Sure, everybody who is cool knows that marijuana is harmless. However, apparently I am not as cool as I like to think I am, because I know no such thing. Do you know what I know about marijuana and other prescription drug interactions? I know fuck-all nothing, that’s what! A simple example. The drug that is used to give MS relapse patients some relief is a corticosteroid called Solu-Medrol. If you have ever had a bad allergic reaction to something, or suffered a very bad asthma attack and you had to go to the hospital for treatment, you very likely were introduced to Solu-Medrol. It is a very powerful hormone. It works really, really well for its intended purposes, but have you ever heard the expression “the harsher the treatment, the quicker the cure”? Solu-Medrol is TOTALLY what they were talking about! I called it Insanity Hormone for good reason. Would postinfusion marijuana help straighten the curves and soften the corners? Perhaps. Unfortunately, the drug also causes rapid heartbeat and increased blood pressure. Would you like to guess what recently legalized drug in Nevada has similar side effects? Marijuana offers tremendous symptom relief for many drugs, but that does not make it harmless. If you are sick, chronically or otherwise, mention the fact that you use marijuana to your doctor when you are getting a medication prescribed. The eighties are over, and your doctor will not yell at you. Safe is much better than sorry. Don't be the first person to die of a “marijuana overdose”, because you know that the government will be all over that! If you require hospitalization, leave the THC and CBD at home. Given the way that the marijuana industry is absolutely THRIVING in our quiet (HA!) desert community, there have never been more marijuana-related employment opportunities available to you than there are right now. If anything, there are likely to be more marijuana jobs available than there are potential employees to staff them. It ain’t like getting hired at the Walmart, though. Why is this? Let’s start with the obvious: while the Demon Weed is legal here in Nevada, it still remains illegal on the Federal level. Have you ever seen anything improved by the addition of governmental oversight? Let’s say that you are Marvin the Dispensary owner, and you have a new facility that needs staffing. You need budtenders, you need Human Resources, you need people to create advertising copy, you need management, you need Security...and you need all of these positions filled before you sell Bud One.

owners are looking for with regard to potential employees... which makes them a little different from most business managers here in town. Big box retailers generally require a pulse and minimal drooling from their employees--that’s about it. Old job advice is good job advice: present the best version of yourself possible to employment personnel. Show up on time for your interview. Have a good, truthful resume--be advised that it will likely be THOROUGHLY vetted, so save your time on mindless boasting. Acquire some industry training and certification; there are several preparatory programs available here in town. And for God’s sake, if asked why you want entry into the marijuana industry, an answer of “because I like to get high!” will not likely result in a job offer. Likewise, regaling everybody with your tales of black market production derring-do and sales makes you a criminal and ultimately, a risk not worth taking. Good luck!

A day in the life of Cannasexual founder, Ashley Manta California Sex Educator, Ashley Manta, began her career as a rape crisis counselor, victim advocate, and violence prevention educator just after graduating college in 2008. After years of listening to and absorbing trauma from victims, by 2011, she felt burned out with direct service and sought to find the joy of her own sexuality. “After networking with other sex and relationship educators, I cultivated a greater body of knowledge about sexuality, and these newfound realizations helped me to come out publicly about my

own sexual trauma and contracting genital herpes, with the intent of decreasing the stigma of Sexually Transmitted Infections, or STIs.” The Pennsylvania transplant said once arriving in California shortly after her epiphany, she experienced cannabis in a whole new light after visiting a legal dispensary. “Walking into a dispensary and seeing all those cultivars and methods of consuming was magical,” she swooned. “Someone sent me a link to a news article about Foria, the company that makes Pleasure, THC-infused [tetrahydrocannabinol] coconut oil spray for sex, and I remember thinking, ‘This could be my thing!’” Ashley, combining her interest in anatomy and physiology, dived vulva first, so to speak, into the world of stimulation and relaxation via cannabis paired with sex. “As a sexual trauma survivor, using cannabis infused products on my genitals has allowed me to have penetrative sex without pain for the first time in a decade,” she shared. “Cannabis enhances the capacity for sustained clitoral stimulation and multiple orgasms.”

Wake, Bake and Sleep

In spite of her late night schedule, either for work or play, Manta said her inner-clock wakes her up at five in the morning, often keeping her from falling back to sleep. “My brain is still tired, but my body is awake, so I’ll take a few hits of a calming cultivar, like Gorilla Glue,” she explained. “Smoking allows me to fall back to sleep until around nine-thirty, and then I’ll have some fruit or make myself some scrambled eggs before catching up on industry news, correspondence and social media posts.” If she wakes up sore or has a headache, she’ll use a full-spectrum CBD (cannabidiol) rich tincture from cannabis, as needed. Depending on the maker, the difference between CBD from hemp or cannabis is the percentage of CBD in the plants to begin with. A CBD product from industrial hemp is typically taken from stalk, then made into an isolate or powdered concentrate – often testing at a mere two percent CBD, with other trace beneficial compounds; as compared to CBD from cannabis purposefully hybridized for higher percentages, often testing between 12 to 14 percent. It’s the difference between using CBD as a supplement or a remedy for healing. “I’d take the tincture daily if my budget allowed, to prevent headaches in the first place, but I’m a working girl on a budget,” she laughed. The average cost of a bottle of tincture in a

dispensary can cost upwards of $60, with some patients likening use to shopping at a high-end organic market – you need to have money to eat clean or purchase cannabis product regularly for prevention, or to treat ailments. “A favorite flower to smoke, once I get my work squared away for the day, is Connect from Canndescent. Their branding is fantastic, it’s sophisticated and clear, and they name their cultivars based on effects rather than antiquated strain names. Connect has a neutral head (not particularly cerebral) but an uplifted body, which for me makes it great for sexy times,” she explained. If she’s in her moon cycle and is suffering from cramps, she’ll use a Foria suppository, vaginally, for relief. “I’ll also use Foria’s suppositories for fun times, for increasing pleasure and decreasing discomfort for anal play,” she winked with a giggle. Manta’s day includes coaching calls, helping clients improve their sex lives, with cannabis as an optional tool, charging upwards of $200 an hour, with micro-sessions in ten minute increments at $30 a pop.

On days where she’s facilitating a workshop, she may travel, with a favorite coming up in Joshua Tree National Park this spring. “I’ve facilitated several workshops a year for Glowing Goddess Getaways, which is a favorite,” she added. “It’s a private membership social club for women, and anyone identifying as a woman is invited to join. The workshop lasts three days and two nights, with wonderful food and all the edibles, dabs, and cannabis you can consume.” One might easily imagine her workshops are one big old-fashioned orgy, but Manta’s focus is on partners relating to each other, using cannabis as a communication tool and for helping everyone find their inner Sex Goddess. “Each workshop begins with an exercise to promote connection, honoring yourself while honoring another person,” she explained. “It’s an eye gazing exercise, or as I explain it, care-bear staring with love and respect. It’s more than Namaste – I like to say, the bad-ass in me recognizes the bad-ass in you.” Manta said she encourages the partners to really look at each other with love and kindness, honoring everything it took to get to this place, together. “Think about the last time you looked in the mirror and were loving to yourself, in spite of the earthly things you struggle with every day,” she waxed poetic. “We are so understanding of others struggles, but can be so self-critical. We need to love ourselves, then we can take care of the people we love. This leads to a more pleasurable experience together, and also a more fulfilling solo-sex practice.” The workshops include product education and how to incorporate cannabis in sexual pleasure with or without the high, via topical use.

Date Night

Manta practices what she preaches with her boyfriend, “B,” who will remain anonymous. The two have been together for four years, and their comfort level allows Manta the ability to experiment with different products and techniques. “B’s tolerance for THC is much lower than mine, so he makes a good example for the many clients I help who may just be entering into the cannabis space,” she said. “If I have a new product, we’ll try it together.” To prepare, Manta sets the stage with candles and incense. She fills her automatic lube warmer, Touch, from a company called Warm with her favorite lube, Silver by Sliquid; brings out her favorite vibrator, Tango, by We-Vibe; lays out her water proof blanket; and hits a dab to get in the mood. She also commands her Amazon Echo to play their favorite mood music, set an alarm, if need be; and activates an electronic do not disturb on all her devices - with the goal of never picking up her iPhone, which can be a huge distraction. “I have an extremely high-tech sex life,” she laughs. Another favorite flower, Create by Candescent, is often enjoyed, as Manta said it gives a slight head-high without feeling overly stoned and a more tactile, overall body high. “I’ll put on his favorite lingerie and apply Foria’s Pleasure to my vulva 25 minutes prior to his arrival – as it takes time to marinate,” she further educates. “I want him to feel that I took the time and effort in creating a space for him. I want him to walk into my lair and be transported to a place that is sensual and safe for all his desires to be realized and strengthen our connection” Great expectations can hinder any situation if anything goes awry, and Manta shared, even with all her experience and their experience together, things can go wrong. “Someone might ingest too much or have a bad reaction to a certain cultivar. The most important thing is to support each other, and be there for each other - that’s the goal, and that’s what I teach my clients.” Too much THC happens, Manta said, and she typically has a good CBD tincture as remedy, a whiff of freshly ground pepper, or cup of chamomile tea to help calm the central nervous system. “Cannabis opens up your third eye, allowing wonderful things to happen, but you must give yourselves permission when it doesn’t work out the way we planned. Even my boyfriend and I have had times where everything shuts down and we stop and pop in a movie and cuddle – and that’s perfectly fine and part of the dance.”

BREAST CANCER

t’s no secret that many cancer patients are using cannabis to help manage pain, fatigue, nausea, and other side effects of chemotherapy. Less well known is the fact that extensive preclinical research shows that plant cannabinoids — most notably, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) – produce antitumor responses in various animal models of cancer.

The vast majority of this preclinical research has examined the anticancer activity of pure compounds, mainly THC isolates. But medical cannabis patients aren’t using pure, single-molecule THC to battle cancer. Instead, they are consuming whole plant cannabis oil extracts that include hundreds of compounds, many of which also have therapeutic properties. These artisanal cannabis oil preparations are available in licensed dispensaries in states where medical cannabis is legal and elsewhere via the unregulated black market. Thus far, however, few rigorous studies have analyzed the effects of whole plant cannabis extracts. So a team of Spanish researchers, led by Cristina Sanchez at Complutense University in Madrid, decided to compare the efficacy of pure THC isolates and THC-rich oil extracts in a series of preclinical experiments that focused on breast cancer. (The oil extracts were provided by Aunt Zelda’s, a California-based medical cannabis producer.) The researchers also investigated the effects of pure THC and an artisanal THC-rich oil formulation when each was combined with standard chemotherapy drugs. Their findings were reported in a 2018 article – “Appraising the ‘Entourage Effect’: Antitumor action of a pure cannabinoid versus a botanical drug preparation in preclinical models of breast cancer” – which was published in the journal Biochemical Pharmacology. The phrase “entourage effect” in this context refers to the full-spectrum synergistic interplay between numerous cannabis compounds – cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids – that impart a therapeutic impact that’s greater than the sum of the plant’s individual components. Spoiler alert: Both THC and the artisanal THC-rich oil were shown to have antitumoral properties, but the oil worked better than the THC isolate for three different breast cancer subtypes.

Tricky to Treat

It is estimated that one in eight women will develop breast cancer. Breast cancer is tricky to treat because there are few biomarkers that signal when someone has the disease, and many patients show or develop resistance to current therapies. Moreover, several specific types of breast cancer respond poorly to modern treatment. These difficulties underscore the importance of exploring new treatments for breast cancer. Two biomarkers frequently used to diagnose breast cancer are hormonal receptors (the estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor) and the HER2 oncogene (a gene which can transform a normal cell into a tumor cell). But a more aggressive malignancy, known as “triple-negative breast cancer,” doesn’t express hormonal receptors or the HER2 oncogene. No targeted therapy exists for triple-negative breast cancer, so patients are treated with harsh chemotherapies that indiscriminately kill proliferating cells, whether cancerous or not. These three types of cancer – hormone-sensitive, HER2, and triple-negative – were used as models for “Appraising the entourage effect.” In all models of breast cancer studied, in vitro as well as in vivo, the whole plant extract was significantly more effective at producing anticancer effects than single-molecule THC. These results were largely consistent for type of cancer and type of model. Researchers tested the compounds in cell cultures (petri dishes) and in rodent models (mice).

THC and Hormone-Sensitive Breast Cancer In the case of hormone-sensitive breast cancer cells, whole plant extract was found to be 15-25% more potent than THC alone. In live-animal models single molecule THC exhibited no significant antitumor response, unlike the whole plant extract, which had a pronounced antitumor effect. Testing on lab animals is a necessary step towards establishing the efficacy of a specific clinical treatment. When the cannabinoid preparations were added to tamoxifen, a standard chemotherapy drug, in a cell plate, the combined therapy was about 20-25% more effective than chemotherapy alone. But these results were not replicated in live-animal trials. Importantly, the cannabinoids also did not negatively impact the efficacy

of the chemotherapy. This suggests that at the very least using cannabis as an add-on treatment to deal with common side effects of chemotherapy, like nausea and appetite loss, won’t impede chemotherapy’s ability to destroy cancer cells. In hormone-sensitive breast cancer, it appears that THC produces effects via interaction with the CB2 cannabinoid receptor. CB2 receptor activation has received significant attention because of its potential to treat diseases while avoiding the “high” mediated by the CB1 cannabinoid receptor, which THC also activates. When THC binds to CB1, it causes the swimmy-headed feelings of intoxication associated with cannabis consumption.

THC and HER2-Positive Breast Cancer Whole plant extract was found to be significantly more potent than THC for HER2-positive breast cancer cells. Both single-molecule THC and whole plant extract showed antitumor effects when the experiment was replicated in mice. Additionally, both THC and the whole plant extract amplified the anticancer effects of lapatinib, the standard chemotherapy drug for HER2 breast cancer. As with hormone-sensitive breast cancer, THC’s antitumoral effect in HER2-positive breast cancer experiments was shown to be mediated by the CB2 cannabinoid receptor. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, a subsequent report by Cristina Sanchez and other Spanish scientists noted that HER2 and CB2 receptors are often found in the same exact place on cells. CB2 actually conjoins with HER2 – forming what is called a

dimer – and this dimerization is associated with poor treatment outcome for breast cancer. The PNAS report shed new light on THC’s anticancer mechanism of action: When THC binds to the CB2 receptor, it breaks up the CB2-HER2 dimer, triggering a chain reaction of signals that culminates in tumor regression.

THC and Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Triple-negative, the breast cancer subtype with the worst prognosis, does not generally respond well to chemotherapy. But the Spanish group found that THC and THC-rich cannabis oil both offer some hope in improving treatment outcomes for this highly aggressive cancer. Again, the whole plant extract was found to be more effective than THC alone in decreasing the viability of cancer cells in vitro as well as in mouse model studies. There are several other examples where a combination of plant cannabinoids and standard chemotherapy agents have produced a heightened antitumoral response that exceeded the potency of either therapy alone. A phase 2 clinical trial tested the strength of Sativex, an equal THC and CBD mixture, combined with temozolomide, the “gold-standard” chemo for brain cancer, and the results were positive. Cancer patients are often treated with several single-compound drugs in an effort to create a treatment that can hit multiple targets. “Although current medicine is mostly based on the use of pure compounds that have single targets,” the Spanish scientists write, “it is increasingly obvious that for diseases as complex as cancer, multitarget approaches could conceivably be more effective.”

The results of the Spanish study, along with compelling data from other researchers, suggest a promising future for whole plant cannabis oil extracts and multitarget cancer therapies. But the Western medical system and its typical drug development procedures are not conducive to the approval of complex botanical preparations as multitarget medicaments – in part because elucidating a precise mechanism of action when numerous compounds are involved is much more difficult than studying a single-molecule pharmaceutical that’s geared toward a single, primary outcome.

The Takeaway The fact that both the THC isolate and the whole plant cannabis extract were shown to be effective at reducing tumor viability is truly groundbreaking and should be an impetus for advancing the development of nontoxic, cannabinoid-based treatments for breast cancer. Cannabinoid therapies are particularly promising for tumorproducing cancers given that “no overtly cannabis-resistant tumors have been described so far,” according to the Spanish researchers. “Considering how different cancer subtypes are, and the fact that the viability of non-transformed cells is not affected by cannabinoids at the concentrations they kill tumor cells, it is tempting to speculate that these compounds tackle essential, as yet unidentified, cellular functions that all cancer cells share, and that are absent in their non-cancerous counterparts.” The Spanish breast cancer study underscores the importance of the entourage effect by demonstrating that full spectrum artisanal cannabis oil extract with numerous components is more effective than pure THC.* “Although the pharmacology of cannabis drug preparation extracts is obviously more complex to study,” the researchers acknowledge, “this therapeutic approach has the potential to produce better therapeutic responses than pure cannabinoids.” The Spanish scientists emphasize that the whole plant cannabis drug preparation “did not, in any case, diminish the antitumor efficacy of any of the standard treatments.” That’s good news for cancer patients who use cannabis to manage the adverse side effects of chemo. Cannabis is very likely a safe add-on therapy for treating pain and nausea and for appetite stimulation. And it may also increase the efficacy of standard chemotherapy treatments, which means that chemo could be more effective – requiring lower and less toxic doses – when used in combination with cannabis. Footnote: *An interesting finding from the Spanish breast cancer study pertains to the not fully understood role of terpenes, the aromatic compounds that give cannabis its distinctive smell. The scientists created a “terpene cocktail” composed of the five most prominent terpenes in the full-spectrum cannabis oil extract: beta-caryophyllene, alpha-humulene, nerolidol, linalool, and beta-pinene. When added to the THC isolate, however, this terpene cocktail failed to increase the antitumoral efficacy of the single-molecule cannabinoid. This could mean that mixing a few terpenes with pure THC does not adequately recreate the qualities of a full-spectrum cannabis oil extract. Or it could be that other compounds in the oil extract are responsible for enhancing THC’s anticancer impact. The authors note that the whole plant cannabis oil extract used in the study also contained measurable amounts of cannabigerol (CBG) and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA – the ‘raw’ form of THC that won’t get you high). CBG has demonstrated effectiveness against colon cancer in preclinical models, and THCA is known to interact with a PPAR (nuclear) receptor that mediates apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cell lines. A combination of all these compounds may be required to achieve the antitumoral response observed in the Spanish breast cancer study. Cannabis Calms RAGING HORMONES, THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE. By Sharon Letts From the moment a young girl starts her menstrual period, she enters into an emotional state few are ready to deal with. The norms of society have told women to keep our mouths shut when it comes to our female situations; be it our periods or a hot flash, our hormonal issues have historically been swept under the proverbial rug for centuries. Each stage of a woman’s natural evolution leading to. and taking us away from, our childbearing abilities comes with challenges. Adolescents, young adults, and the aging woman all have one thing in common- our hormones affect our emotions, and our emotions can get the best of us. Our bodies seem to have a life of their own when it comes to strength, endurance and even our body temperature can seem out of control while hormonal. According to Thyroid.org, an estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, with 60 percent not realizing they have the disorder at all, so seemingly benign are the symptoms. Women are more likely to present with thyroid disease, with one in eight women developing problems in her lifetime. Thyroid disease comes with a laundry list with upwards of 85 symptoms; menopause can have up to 35 symptoms that come and go as they please, lasting up to 15 years. Many women are in denial about being in menopause, thinking that since the hot flashes subsided, you are out of the woods. But, emotions are the cornerstone of hormonal imbalances. Weight gain with a sluggish digestive system is at the top of the symptom list. If the foods you are choosing aren’t helping your digestive system, then you are looking at chronic constipation.

FUZZY, NOT CRAZY Fuzzy brain is a real symptom of both Thyroid Disease and menopause, causing the hormonal woman to feel stupid and even crazy. If you are already medicating with cannabis, this layer of confusion can be used against you. We can become forgetful and talk in unfinished sentences – it’s not the weed, its fuzzy brain. You aren’t a “stupid stoner” and you are not a “ditzy” woman, you are hormonal and it’s not your fault! And then there are the crying jags. Overcome with emotions by a mere suggestion of injustice or slight, I’d cry for hours unable to calm myself. I had been a stoic single mother to my daughter, but when my hormonal issues got the better of me, even she was astounded by the quickness of my demise into a puddle of tears and self-doubt.

The fatigue that overcame me with Thyroid Disease became unbearable in menopause. In the day time I couldn’t nap, and became out of breath after vacuuming one room. I took sleeping pills, but they didn’t work, and I’d be up every two hours in the night, unable to get any REMs at all. There seemed to be no help at all with the powerful hot flashes that could push out tears in an instant, combined with extreme body temperatures; cold literally pained me, and the heat made me feel like I was dying. I had been prescribed Synthroid to treat my hypothyroid disease for more than 10 years when it stopped working. My metabolism slowed and I became more fatigued. Another prescription of Cytomel was added, with the warning label stating it shouldn’t be used as a weight loss aid. This warning told me that Cytomel was merely speed prescribed to quicken my metabolism, not heal my body from a hormonal imbalance. I never really felt helped by any pharmaceutical with the myriad hormonal symptoms that had plagued me. Then, I presented with breast cancer and was given the strong cannabis oil, and everything changed overnight, literally.

WEED, THE WONDER DRUG The first night of taking cannabis oil I didn’t need a sleeping pill and slept for a solid ten hours straight. Guess what happens when a hormonal woman gets rest? She feels better. She feels happy. That first morning I also went to the bathroom. Thyroid patients understand what it means to not be able to go to the bathroom on a regular basis. I had only been able to relieve myself once a week for years up until that morning – yelling out to my now ex from the bathroom, “I’m going to the bathroom!” It was a celebratory moment. That first day I no longer needed the pain killer I’d taken for months for an injured knee. Eventually I’d do away with the cane and the presumed knee replacement. In two and a half weeks I no longer needed up to ten prescription medications and supplements I’d needed for numerous symptoms from both thyroid disease and menopause. In two and a half months the cancer was gone, but it was the health of my thyroid and hormonal issues that gave me a better quality of life immediately – that was the bonus. Some say that hormonal issues are directly related to our depleted endocannabinoid system, and that our empty diets combined with added toxins in our environment challenges our immune system, causing all kinds of health issues. Going into menopause with a challenged thyroid and immune system is enough to make anyone sick. Being aware of what your body needs at this time is key.

Ingesting the concentrated cannabis oil for breast cancer was a Godsend for this Thyroid Disease patient. The concentrated super plant fed my endocannabinoid system, which fed all my biological systems, and thusly sped up my metabolism, helping me to lose weight. Feeding my endocannabinoid system lifted my endorphins and gave me an overall feeling of well-being. It regulated my body temperature, making hot flashes a thing of the past. I still have a raise in my body temperature once in a while, but not the heartstopping flashes of the past. Smoking cannabis while ingesting it also raises endorphins like a morning jog, in an entourage effect. With menopause also comes female issues such as a dry vaginal canal and soreness, making intimacy difficult. Soon my tub of cannabis infused coconut salve became a staple on my bedside table, and using it topically and inside my vaginal canal allowed pleasure once more, taking away any pain and discomfort. It actually stimulated my clitoris, allowing me to enjoy love-making once again. Is cannabis a miracle drug? No, it’s a plant they lied to us about for a very long time. Is cannabis the only plant with help for our biological bodies? No, but it can be a gateway to other plants. Cannabis helped me to see that there is a plant for everything. In the years that have followed I’ve added chamomile to my daily dosing protocols, after finding a study on the little flower treating depression. It certainly treats anxiety, and a chamomile concentrate capsule has replaced valium for this anxiety sufferer. The answers to female issues are found in the garden, we’ve just wandered away for far too long.

The psychedelic and historical context of comic-book swordswoman Red Sonja

n 1973, the General Social Survey, a sociological assessment collected by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago and funded by the National Science Foundation, conducted its first poll on cannabis. The poll revealed an interesting finding: 19 percent of respondents believed cannabis should be legal. Indeed, there was more than change in the air. That same year, in the pages of mainstream comic books published by industry leader Marvel, the confluence of cannabis’ positive impact and the growing women’s movement was apparent in the debut of “the flame-haired she-devil with a sword” in Conan the Barbarian issue 23. Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith, Red Sonja sliced her way into the imaginations of young male readers in the U.S. Servicemen returning from Vietnam’s blood-soaked rice paddies searched for something harder than J.R.R. Tolkien to chew on. Sword-andsorcery entertainment as we know it was born that year. Gary Gygax founded Tactical Studies Rules (TSR) for the purpose of releasing his Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game.More importantly, as a result of Roe v. Wade decision, the U.S. Supreme Court established a woman’s right to choose. Given this historical context, it’s no wonder Red Sonja appeared and enthralled. The Vietnam-era barbarian trend in comics had been fueled by Marvel’s successful 1970 adaptation of interwar pulp writer Robert E. Howard’s Conan. Howard had created Conan in 1932 in the pages of Weird Tales, but Howard was too ferocious and strange a writer to be admired in his own time. The hippies, however, understood the psychedelic charge of his prose. It helped that Marvel editor-in-chief Stan Lee had expertly courted a collegeage audience with concepts like Spider-Man (nerdy wallflower by day, costumed vigilante by night, whose girlfriend was named Mary Jane Watson—get it?). That same readership was getting older and looking for stronger fare that referenced and validated a blossoming counterculture. Outside the underground comic movement (led by artists like Robert Crumb), Marvel was the only commercial company to respond with psychedelic characters like Doctor Strange, the Silver Surfer, and Warlock. But it was Conan the

Barbarian that delivered the bloody, adult-oriented goods. By the middle of the decade, there were three more Marvel titles devoted to the muscular raider: King Conan, Savage Sword of Conan, and Savage Tales. In need of a recurring female swordsman with which to pair Conan, Roy Thomas excavated Howard’s forgotten stories and unearthed the perfect female counterpoint in a non-Conan story called “Shadow of the Vulture,” a Crusades-era yarn featuring a red-haired woman warrior. Thomas explains the origin in his foreword to the recently released Red Sonja: The Ballad of the Red Goddess (Dynamite, $19.99): I discovered a she-devil with a sword (and pistol!) called Red Sonya of Rogatine, taking part in defending Vienna from the Turks. I loved the story and got [the Howard-estate literary agent’s] permission to adapt it into an issue of Conan, with the German-knight hero changed to a Cimmerian. I changed “Sonya” to “Sonja” to indicate the difference between the two versions of the character, lost the pistol, and Red Sonja of Hyrkania was born[.] Marvel readers’ response to Sonja was overwhelmingly positive. She regularly appeared in team-ups with Conan over the years and throughout the series’ run well into the 1990s. But it was in 1977 when she earned her own title, written by Thomas and by various other scribes, and drawn by legendary artists like Frank Thorne and Esteban Maroto. Red Sonja stands today as some of the best psychedelic fantasy storytelling ever produced in comic form. Red Sonja indulged in the hallucinatory surrealism, in the visual expression of expanded consciousness, whether the heroine is squaring off against giant robots or narrowly escaping the toothy jaws of Set’s crocodile-headed sons. There is just something about the character that lends itself to depictions of heightened states and extreme sensory overload. Unlike Conan—who distrusted magic, having watched his family slain by a dark wizard—Red Sonja was transformed into a revengeful killer (à la Arya Stark in Game of Thrones) by Scáthach, a red-haired Celtic goddess of battle after being assaulted by men. Scáthach bestowed Sonja with

a melting, majestic forestscape, only to find she must sacrifice her unicorn to a demon-scorpion in order to acquire the sword-skills she needs to kill the men who hurt her. Then she kills the demon-scorpion. Then she slays the men. But it all takes place in a hazy, kaleidoscopic blur that will make you wonder if you might have popped an edible prior to sitting down with this book. It provides a great jumping-on point for anyone interested in exploring the character. Speaking of edibles, it should be noted there was, very likely, a serious cannabis culture in the halls of Marvel’s offices in the ’70s—as there was in many offices in New York and on the West Coast. In Sean Howe’s book Marvel: The Untold Story, comics writer Denny O’Neill relates how Stan Lee scolded him “for wearing a T-shirt depicting a cannabis plant to the office.” Red Sonja creator Thomas had hired O’Neill in 1965 to work as an editorial assistant. In any case, Red Sonja: The Ballad of the Red Goddess—hardcover and 92 pages in length—is a beautiful reminder of the character’s psychedelic edge and enduring charm. As the non-binary (that is, neither exclusively male or female) bard lutestrums at the end of this saga: On sphere of all the rainbow’s hues, She wields aloft her rogue-tinged rage “She’s born of blood,” so sings the muse, And now no world can be her cage. unparalleled skill in battle on the condition that she never love a man unless he defeated her in a fight. Sonja accepted the deal and was reborn, courtesy of psychedelic magic. Sonja’s origin is retold again in Ballad of the Red Goddess, originally published in Spain, which reunites Thomas with the Spanish artist responsible for designing Sonja’s metal-bikini look—Esteban Maroto, now 77 years old, best known for his work in the ’70s and ’80s on comic magazines like Vampirella, his style phantasmagoric and fluid and full of transcendent energy. Although Red Goddess, presented in black and white and crimson, offers a frame narrative rendered by younger Spanish artist Santi Casas, this is really Maroto’s showcase, and he chooses to center the proceedings on the character’s formation. He presents Sonja’s origin with genuine horror and with swirling, surging visuals. This time around, Scáthach is replaced by Morrigan, the shape-shifting “phantom queen” goddess of death in Irish mythology. Moreover, Red Sonja, in her mind’s eye, bareback-rides a red-maned unicorn across

A heroine of the legalization and feminist moment, Red Sonja continues to garner a significant readership in an era dominated by streaming services and superhero cinema. And although production on the Red Sonja movie has been delayed (due to director Bryan Singer’s sex-misconduct allegations), don’t count her out. A character forged during a moment of cultural change and societal transformation isn’t likely to sit still.

TCM: Your parents are both prominent figures in Las Vegas, how do they feel about your comedy as well as your cannabis use?

Rachel Wolfson: Yes, born and raised!

RW: I think they are pretty supportive.

TCM: Do you perform locally? If so, where can we find you?

TCM: How did you get into comedy?

RW: I do! I just spent a week hosting the Laugh Factory Las Vegas for Mike Saccone and Dom Irerra, it’s an amazing club. I was recently on a show at The Cellar in the Rio with Doug Benson for his show, Doug Loves Movies. The Hilarious 7 at Hooters Casino is a dope show and I also love performing at the L.A. comedy club in the Stratosphere. I post all shows to Instagram.

RW: I took a class called “Pretty Funny Women” (@ prettyfunnywomen) that is taught by my first comedy mentor Lisa Sundstedt. That was my foundation to the open mic scene.

TCM: What do you love most about this city? RW: It’s the entertainment capital of the world and there’s never a dull moment. There is literally something for everyone. TCM: What do you dislike?

TCM: Where do you get your material? RW: My life, literally anything can inspire a joke. That’s why it’s important to keep it moving. TCM: How do you handle hecklers? RW: Depends on the situation, you have to take it as they come or don’t, and tell them to shut the fuck up. TCM: What if the audience doesn't laugh?

RW: Life goes on and so will your career. It’s how you recover and keep going that counts. Every bomb is an opportunity to learn and grow. TCM: What challenges do you face as a woman in the comedy realm? RW: I think in any male dominated field there is an element where women have to work extra hard to prove themselves. Comedy is no different. Any challenge I’ve faced I see as an opportunity to work harder. Rejection is part of the game and using it to motivate myself to become undeniable is how I have to look at it. The only real competition I have is my less funny self from the day before. TCM: Is comedy your day job? If not, what job do you do to earn a living? RW: Comedy is my night job. Marketing is my day job. I do social media, marketing and advertising for cannabis brands. I also write for various publications like High Times and Merry Jane and shoot content for multiple cannabis media companies @ buddfeed/@toptree

TCM: What role does cannabis play in your comedy? RW: It’s part of my life so it’s part of my comedy. I smoke before some shows and other shows I won’t be high for. It all just depends, but you better believe at the end of each night I have a blunt or a joint waiting for me. TCM: Favorite strain or product? RW: Indica, and I really love OG, Gushers, Purple Punch and Kush Queen Bath Bombs are my favorite product on the market. TCM: Favorite stoner joke? RW: “I used to do drugs. From the Dark Side of the Moon

t was Saturday morning, May, 1961 and as was customary, our parents were "sleeping" in. This meant, once again, as the eldest, I was responsible for preparing breakfast. Already comfortable in kitchens, I pushed my step stool up against the stove. After pulling out a saucepot along with a wooden spoon I poured in a sufficient amount of the boxed cereal. In typical bossy-big-sister fashion, I directed my brother to get the bottle of milk from the fridge, which I added using only my judgment. With the burner set at medium-high, I stirred the lightbrown mixture, delighted to see one of my favorite cereals come together: Malt-O-Meal. My brother, Lawrence, stood by my side, at the ready, while our sister whined she wanted to help too. I instructed her to turn on cartoons. Of all the family members she was the most talented at setting the bunny ears of the antenna just right for the clearest, line-free reception. "Top Cat!" She exclaimed; a popular choice. Satisfied, Joy settled herself onto the center of the couch. Lawrence, now distracted, left me to my own devices. As the creamy mixture began to bubble and burp, I set the breakfast bar with three placemats, spoons and napkins. Carefully, I ladled some of the hot cereal into each bowl. Having learned the importance of properly seasoning food prior to serving, I plunged my hand into a box of brown sugar. After evenly distributing the crystallized molasses, I licked my sticky palm and fingers announcing breakfast was ready. We clamoured onto our assigned stools, grateful they swiveled, so we could eat while watching T.V. It didn't take the sugary concoction long to kick in. Joy was soon laughing hysterically as Officer Dibble repeatedly clonked Choo Choo on the head with the lid of a trash can. This inspired Lawrence to engage in a chair dance to the rhythm of the clonking. I was busy swiping my bowl clean of chocolaty remnants with my index finger. Suddenly a commercial blasted onto the screen. It was an advertisement for Malt-O-Meal! Knowing the jingle by heart, we joined in: "Get on your Malt-O-Meal mobile. Get on your MaltO-Meal mobile. Get that start in your engine and see how good you feel." By now Lawrence was all revved up. Forgetting about our sleeping parents, he shouted out his countdown: “Ten, nine, eight, seven . . . ignition; Blast Off!!!” Pushing his stool backwards, he propelled himself with such force, he looked like a rocket. This reminded me of the space launch we had watched just days earlier, as Alan Shepard shot through the sky into orbit. Joy excitedly exclaimed, “Me too, me too!” Placing her hands on the edge of the bar preparing for her own take off, Lawrence immediately interjected telling her, “No. You can’t do it too. watching Lawrence repeat his singing and flinging exercise. The fun ended when his final push was so great, he and his stool tipped backwards, crashing to the floor. This brought our parents out of their room. Young and impressionable it’s clear, news images and television ads, impacted us almost as much as our parents. One of the biggest influences of that era was the Space Race. Everywhere fantasy mimicked current events. The Jetsons gave us a sneak peek into our futuristic lifestyle. George, Jane, Judy, and Roscoe showed us how we would be transporting ourselves to and from work, school and home. What girls could look forward to in running a home and managing a family. How we would be communicating with one another. Even how to cook our food. That cartoon along with other programs such as, Lost In Space and The Outer Limits seemed to many, insights to the inner workings at NASA. Shepard’s televised fifteen minute-twentyseven second suborbital flight was momentous and became an integral part of America’s conversation. Days later, on May 25th, we watched President Kennedy declare the U.S. was officially in the Space Race. As I munched on my afterschool snack, I thought about those Astronauts and wondered what they ate while in space. I also wondered why exactly girls weren’t permitted to go. Had NASA posted the same sign our brother taped on his bedroom door? “KEEP OUT! NO GIRLS ALLOWED!!!” By the time Friendship 7 was launched, NASA had not yet addressed the issue of women in space but they had addressed the matter of food and drink. It was Tang, that orange colored, flavored powder that went along with John Glenn and others as they made their three swings around the Earth. It was a welcomed alternative to the chemical-laced beverage they had referred to as “crappy drinking water.” We gravity-harnessed kids believed the ads telling us we too could be part of the Space Program simply by drinking Tang. I remember stirring the Pixie-Stick-like powder into a glass of cold water. Clumps floated to the top, while much stuck to the bottom like wet cement. Still, it was exciting to think I was enjoying the same breakfast drink as my spacey counterparts. That Malt-O-Meal morning stayed with me. Sadly, it didn’t appear my favored hot cereal had any more of a chance making it into space than those of the female gender. Curious, I asked my teacher what our Space Explorers were eating up there. She wasn’t sure. I then asked why girls couldn’t be Astronauts. She didn’t have an answer for that either. I wondered if perhaps girls offered to cook aboard the space shuttles, then we could be Astronauts. We did hear a little about food in space. But there wasn’t any cooking. Astronauts were supplied with squeeze packets filled with babyfood-like mashed fruits, vegetables and freeze-dried

TALES OF LIFE & FOOD entrees mixed with cold water. These mixtures with their bland taste and loose consistency barely passed as a meal. I found this disheartening. By the 70’s Pillsbury developed a “tasty” snack for space travel: Space Food Sticks. These high protein hand-held meals designed specifically for the Astronauts, ended up in the homes of families all across America. Two cylindrical tubes packaged inside space-agey foil-lined paper. By now, I had accepted that no girls would be going into space. However, a few were part of the Space Program, working Earthly jobs, humbly supporting men who were allowed into Orbit. Still in elementary school, it was evident, the only way I could be part of the excitement was to eat what Astronauts ate. I begged our mother to buy Space Food Sticks. My siblings and I clapped with glee when she did. Unfortunately, they were awful. Dry and crumbly, lacking any resemblance to the flavor indicated on the package. A precursor to today's protein and energy bars, these cardboard-like snacks were a common sight on playgrounds and in school lunchboxes. Yes, they tasted horrible, but we were proud Americans, so we ate them anyway. With the recent news of NASA’s failure to supply enough small to medium sized Space Suits to fit women, my thoughts of food in space resurfaced. My questions led to me seek answers, and as often happens, led to a more interesting question. Does Cannabis have a place in the Space Program? While researching, I discovered lack of appetite is a common occurrence for Astronauts. People are initially drawn to food with their eyes and noses. The curling scent of seasonings and spices whet our appetites as much as our growling stomachs. But in space, those aromatic properties quickly waft into thin air due to the thin air. Failure to be enticed by one's eyes and nose, would likely result in tepid interest about what's on your plate. Yet healthy calories are essential when working aboard shuttles. Therefore eating is a must. There’s a remedy for lack of appetite. Cannabis; a well-known appetite enhancer. Nausea. What we non-space travelers call "weightlessness," is actually referred to as a "micro-gravity environment." Astronauts still have weight but are essentially falling and floating through space, while encased in those shuttles. With no true up or down for the body to reference, nausea is rampant. There’s a remedy for nausea. Cannabis; a well-known deterrent of motion sickness. We can all relate to work stress and the headaches that often result from that stress. Imagine commuting 238,855 miles to work a six-month long shift. Stress of that sort, certainly could bring about headaches. Cannabis; a well-known remedy for headaches. Insomnia. Without the cycle of daylight and night, suffering extended sleeplessness must be extremely aggravating during space travel. It's not as though Astronauts can catch up by sleeping in on Saturday morning. Again, Cannabis; a well-known remedy for

insomnia. Though an advocate of Medicinal Marijuana, I don’t relish the idea of Astronauts hurtling through space wearing sheepish grins, giggling for no apparent reason and ransacking the galley in an effort to satisfy their munchies. However, it’s not outlandish to consider Cannabis in the form of CBD. I'd much rather know our Astronauts are using organic, side-effect-free medications in place of chemically-crafted pharmaceuticals with their long list of side effects. The thought of any Astronaut suffering a skin rash, diarrhea, blindness, or hallucinations due to synthetic medications is far more frightening. The application and inclusion of CBD infused foods would be simple. Shuttles are now furnished with convection ovens and hot water. Those in-flight meals once dubbed, “the gourmet’s nightmare of a more distant future,” have greatly improved. Menus include choices such as macaroni and cheese, freeze-dried fruits and vegetables, irradiated proteins, cookies, brownies and other treats. Any one of which could be CBD infused without negatively impacting taste or nutritional value. With NASA’s intention of sending astronauts to an asteroid by 2025 and then onto Mars by the 2030s, those old "I want to support the space program," feelings came bubbling up like that Malt-O-Meal morning. So, I’m offering women, finally allowed into that clubhouse of Space Travel, and men, who forge ahead into that "final frontier," Cosmic Muffin’s version of Space Food Sticks.

>>>>> cannabis with Chef MISTY Mistyland’s Tropical Island Carrot Cake 2 cups flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder Pinch of salt for love, luck and laughter 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional) 1/2 tsp lemon peel 1/2 tsp orange peel 1 cup shredded coconut 2 cups shredded carrots (4 to 5 carrots) 1 cup raisins 1 cup chopped walnuts 8 oz crushed pineapple (not drained) 1 cup coconut oil (liquid ) 2 tsp infused cannabis oil 2 Tbsp vanilla extract 1 Tbsp coconut extract 3 eggs 1/2 cup almond milk (I use vanilla almond milk, coconut milk is also great) Frosting (optional) 2 8oz cream cheese room temp 8oz mascarpone cheese room temp 5 to 6 cups powdered sugar 2 Tbsp vanilla extract 1 Tbsp almond extract 2-4 Tbsp almond milk Frosting: Blend both cheeses in a large bowl with mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes. Then mix on low speed alternating 1 cup of powdered sugar and 1 Tbsp almond milk until all gone and incorporated. Mix in vanilla and almond extracts. If frosting looks too thin you can add more powdered sugar to your desired consistency. Add infused cannabis oil into your liquid coconut oil and stir until blended. In one large bowl mix all dry ingredients together: flour, sugars, baking soda, baking powder, pinch of salt, nutmeg, lemon peel, orange peel, shredded coconut, shredded carrots, raisins, and walnuts. Mix until incorporated. Add remaining ingredients: crushed pineapple, infused coconut oil, vanilla extract, coconut extract, eggs, and almond milk. Mix until incorporated. Pour into 2 9in round greased and floured cake pans or into 24 cupcakes Preheat oven to 350. Bake 15 - 18 minutes for cupcakes or 25-30 minute for 9in pans (top will be slightly browned). Cool before serving. Store in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 4 months. Notes: To easily turn this carrot cake vegan, simply omit the eggs and frosting and add an extra 1/2 cup almond milk. And voilà! - Vegan heaven! This moist (my favorite word) and airy recipe will wisp you away with its subtle notes of orange and pineapple. TCM: What sets your products apart?

KS: Our focus is single-strain products that stay true to the cannabis cultivar— the idea being that with all the diversity of experiences that cannabis has to offer, people should have the same control over their edible experience that they do over smoking or vaping. Women bring a unique perspective and skillset to this industry, and we need to fight for our place at the table. TCM: What drives you to do what you do? KS: Passion, curiosity and gratitude. This plant has made an enormous positive impact on my health—I’ve been using cannabis to control my Crohn’s disease for 20 years—and it’s lovely to hear from so many of our customers about how much it has helped them. I’m also very curious by nature, and we know so little about the true potential of cannabis since it’s been illegal for the last century. I’m thrilled to be on the cutting edge of its re-emergence into common usage. TCM: What changes would you like to see made within the industry? KS: More funding and leadership roles should be made available to women and minorities, and all cannabis related convictions should be vacated immediately. Banking and taxation need to be fixed. Additionally, working in the cannabis space should not have an impact on immigration status. TCM: Are there any women-centered health issues that you believe cannabis is perfect for? KS: Any woman who consumes cannabis will tell you that it is a fantastic treatment for cramps and other menses-related ailments. In addition, as women are more prone to autoimmune disease, it can be a beneficial adjunct for many of those conditions.

TCM: When it comes to cannabis, do you feel that women require different products than men or do most products work for both? KS: Our company is based on customization. I think that everyone requires different products, there can never be too much variety. For instance, there are products and strains that I use regularly, and I have go-tos for specific symptoms, times of day, time of year, etc. Having a large variety benefits both men and women in this situation, as everyone’s chemistry is different. An exception, however, are products tailored to the treatment of menses, like vaginal suppositories. WITH ROB RUCKUS So last month, in Reno, I spoke at the Reno Cannabis Convention. It was a great weekend filled with industry experts giving talks on legislation, hemp, cannabis culture, cultivation (I got to moderate that one), veterans getting the shaft, healing properties of cannabis and CBD, cannabis parents, and many more topics pertaining to this amazing plant. My favorite by far was one near and dear to my heart (and health)- Escaping Opiates with Cannabis. The panel consisted of Robert Cohen from Cohen Medical Center, Mary from Mary’s Medibles (who is also an MS patient), Dr. Carmen Jones, and me.We touched on all aspects of escaping opiates. Like, do NOT just stop cold turkey if you have an opiate addiction. Cannabis oil and products should be used as something to fall back on while getting off opiates. Luckily I had a help from a doctor (and a lot of friends) while I got off opiates. I used a Suboxone treatment to get off of them. Unfortunately, not everyone has that option. But if you have the willpower to quit, I know more than a few people who have weaned themselves down and used RSO or cannabis oil and have been opiate free because of it. Hell, I’ve seen a lady, 74-years-old, give up 6 opiate pills a day with CBD oil! It is 100% possible, you just have to be safe about it and give your body chemistry the time it needs to change back after the opiates leave your system. Your body stops making dopamine and other chemicals when you artificially add them through pills. It takes time for it to start again, so don’t expect magic to happen or the pain that got you on the opiates in the first place to go away. But, if you give your body the time it needs to create our own painkillers and anti-inflammatories that our system naturally makes, the addition of cannabinoids can usually help you manage your pain without all the horror that goes along with opiates. Some of these things include addiction, liver and kidney damage, constipation and more. We also had a long talk about why this opiate addiction epidemic is happening. I personally blame the pharmaceutical/insurance companies and the doctors. Now, I wanna take this space to thank Dr. Carmen Jones for being one of the GOOD doctors that are out there educating people and getting them off these horrible drugs. At one point she said she felt attacked by some of the things we were saying about doctors. But I want to reiterate that I have nothing but LOVE for her and what she does! But, it’s

most (not all) of her profession that has created this epidemic in the first place. And not necessarily intentionally! Doctors are put through schooling and given the tools to do a job just like everyone else. Doctors make the bulk of their money from insurance companies and pharmaceutical kickbacks. Meaning, they have to please their bosses just like the rest of us. Someone comes in saying “my elbow hurts”, and the doctor says, “well the company just told us this pill is great for elbow pain, go get some of these, here’s a script”. Then they get a check for prescribing medication. Robert Cohen brought up a great point about the 6 minute doctor appointment model. They literally try to keep our doctor visits under 6 minutes. I can’t explain to someone in 6 minutes what’s wrong with my truck, let alone what’s wrong with me! But that’s the tools they are given- figure out what the symptoms are in a few minutes, then throw these pills at them. Unfortunately, that’s what they did. Now with me, and I’m sure a lot of other people, I knew better. I’ve never trusted doctors. I know a few as friends, and I know that they get money for pushing the newest drug the pharmaceutical companies send to them. That’s their job! Not necessarily to make people’s health better in the long term, just use your 6 minutes and fix what you can now. Unfortunately this model has created a junkie epidemic. It was great to hear all the success stories and get to talk to people personally and help them figure out a path to their own health. The thing that sticks with me the most was the veteran who was visibly crying and shaken because of all his brothers and sisters that are killing themselves because they can’t deal with their addictions and PTSD. The VA is well known to take away all prescription drugs if they find cannabis in the bloodstream. He wanted to know, what are we going to do to help them? We explained that we are all doing what we can, getting the conversation started. Helping to get people to understand what is happening and that there is a plant that grows everywhere that can help. Being in Reno (on our own dime) to teach what we know and learn what you know! Then, hopefully we work together to fix the problem. So here’s my part- I’m still chugging away writing my little article, letting folks know when I see something that’s wrong and could use ALL of our attention, and trying to pepper it with a bit that’s right and helpful too. So now it’s your turn. Go to, or get in touch with Nevada NORML. They are doing great things like working with the legislature and VA trying to make these changes and they make it very easy for you to be involved. Every time I personally have gone to a meeting or function, they always have petitions or letters to the government ready for me to sign. They are doing their part, I’m doing my part, what are you doing? Hopefully not being selfish. Don’t bogart the joint or information! Get out there and pass it around.
