During that time, he sustained numerous injuries including early onset Alzheimers, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), seizures and vertigo.

Since his retirement, he has utilized and spoken out about the benefits of medical cannabis. Turley has an array of business interests in the cannabis space. He created Neuro XPF, a CBD company, he is a partner in a California dispensary, and he is a board member of the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund which provides medical care and assistance to retired players.

Most recently, he along with other football greats, Jim McMahon, Ricky Williams and Eben Britton, joined together to create the Revenant cannabis brand. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Kyle about the new venture and what led him to cannabis.

STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Congratulations on your new brand and, on your recent move to Tennessee. How are you adjusting to life in the South?

KYLE TURLEY: Thank you, we are

excited for the new brand. Here in Tennessee, everyone is living. We moved from California where many businesses and schools are still experiencing a multitude of Covid restrictions and mandates. Here, schools are open, masks are not mandated, my kids are playing

sports. It’s beautiful!

SS: That’s awesome. Speaking of Covid, you have been quite outspoken about the virus and about using cannabis to combat it.

KT: This is an unfortunate situation we are

in. I don’t think there is anyone out there that can say there isn’t something going on here. It doesn’t make sense and the government and health officials are pitting our communities against one another. No matter what you believe, whether there is a virus or isn’t a virus, there are two million other viruses floating around daily and those are out to kill you. I haven’t really been sick in the last 6-7 years. I do think I had Covid, mainly because I lost my sense of taste and smell. When that happened, I made sure I ate as many jalapenos as I could - they have a much higher Vitamin C content than something like oranges. I used what I could naturally to get better.

And honestly, whenever I am not feeling 100%, I smoke more cannabis and guess what, I feel better. There were many people that were upset with me when I said that cannabis could cure Covid. But, the definition of the word “cure” is to bring the human body back to health. Every study that the government has conducted on cannabis shows that cannabis puts the body back into homeostasis. Being in homeostasis and having your body balanced is just where you want it to be.

Not to mention, these big pharmaceutical companies that are distributing vaccines, guess what else they are involved in?

Synthetic cannabinoid development.

These companies are currently working on synthetically developing somewhere around 400 different cannabinoids.

SS: You played multiple seasons in the NFL which brought a lot of injuries. Oddly, I think there are still a lot of people out there who do not understand why sports injuries are better treated with cannabis than with pharmaceuticals.

KT: It’s crazy isn’t it? To know where we are, and where we’ve come from, to still hear people be that confused just baffles me. I often wonder what people are using their smartphones for. The information on cannabis and how the plant helps people is readily available for those that care to do a little research. I don’t know how much more I can talk about it from a personal perspective. I used to take a ton of pills and I don’t anymore. Playing football, I put my body and my brain through an unbelievable beating that resulted in plates and screws being put in, and things being taken out.

My partners and I were the pharmaceutical guinea pigs of football in the 90’s and early 2000’s.

SS: The pharmaceutical industry is money driven and they’ve certainly got their marketing down to a science.

KT: They sure do. The commercials on

television that show pharmaceutical drugs that are used by and sometimes endorsed by athletes. What do you think the general public is going to think? They are going to buy into it. For me, cannabis saved my life.

I haven’t taken any pharmaceutical drugs for seven years now.

SS: Were you a cannabis consumer prior to playing football?

KT: I was definitely introduced to cannabis as a teenager, I grew

up in Southern California. I had friends that grew and friends that consumed. As I learned more about it, I realized there were many people using cannabis, from people at my church to neighborhood ladies using it for Glaucoma. I feel like there was always that seed being planted in the back of my head preparing me for the opportunities I have today. I believe that God has prepared every one of us for a great opportunity and to serve a purpose here and cannabis is mine. Cannabis was given to me as a health benefit by another player that saw I was struggling with a lot of on-the-field and off-the-field issues. I was dealing with the pressures of the game as well as some conflicts personally with family. Cannabis allowed me to sleep and eat. Rest and recovery are what our bodies

need and cannabis gave me that. I saw many friends in college lose their scholarships over cannabis use and that’s unfortunate because this plant heals.

SS: You have a CBD company, Neuro XPF and the products sold under that company contain no THC. I am assuming that you created that company to help athletes who may also be drug tested.

KT: That is correct. I attended The Emerald Cup up in Northern California about six years ago to do some research and understand what the cannabis industry was all about. The Emerald Cup team had invited me there to speak and tell my story. And, this was one of the first cannabis events to welcome athletes to the stage. While there, I had the chance to see what all these companies were doing and to hear stories from those using cannabis medicinally. At that time, I didn’t really know much about CBD and there was a guy there giving

out CBD dabs. He told me it was pure, CBD isolate and that it wouldn’t make me high but that I would feel great. Of course, I tried a dab and within a very short amount of time, everything just started to balance out. All of a sudden, I was walking around taller, fresher and more alive.

I immediately went back to the guy to find out more. He explained the process of making isolate and I knew right away that I had to look further into this. CBD was the best way to help athletes and even children. And thus, my company Neuro XPF was created. We have since worked with many extreme sport athletes and youth leagues. It has been amazing to be able to help people with the same plant that has helped me in such an amazing way.

SS: Your passion as well as your mindfulness towards athletes is inspiring. Will you add any whole plant CBD products to your line?

KT: Absolutely. I started with the isolate line because I knew that

athletes that faced drug testing and minors would need something without any trace of THC. Today, the NCAA is allowing a higher THC nanogram limit and the NFL has stopped suspending players for positive cannabis tests. There are alot of good things happening and we are elevating that conversation. We started with isolate products and we are now about to launch Neuro XPF Plus which is a full spectrum product line. We are also looking at doing a smokeable line of hemp products. Regardless of what some think, smoking cannabis is also quite medicinal and beneficial to the lungs.

SS: How about your family, your wife and kids? Do they utilize CBD? KT: Oh yah, my wife had skin cancers for the first ten years of our

marriage (we’ve been together twenty years). Over the last five years, since she’s been taking CBD, she rarely sees skin cancers and when she does, we use a highly concentrated RSO (cannabis oil) on them with a Bandaid on top and within three or four days, they are gone. Our daughter unfortunately was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. We couldn’t figure out what was going on with her, we were just told that she’s at that age where puberty is happening and hormones are coming into play. When we took her to the emergency room, she was at around a 600 blood sugar level.

The doctors there told us that people that get to that level typically do not live. They said that she had been sustaining at that level for almost a month. We were dumbfounded at that. They asked what we had been doing with her and we told them that we give her CBD daily. It is really difficult to explain to people all of the ways that cannabis has helped me and my family.

SS: How frustrating is it to have conversations with actual physicians who, with just a bit of research could educate themselves on cannabis and the endocannabinoid system?

KT: I have had in depth conversations with the NFL doctors as

well as other medical professionals. They want to hear what I have to say and then many choose to ignore me after that. They tell me they appreciate what I am doing and encourage me to keep

doing what I am doing without acknowledging that they could be instrumental in helping push this along. I think it is more palatable for doctors if I keep doing the talking.

SS: Of course it is more palatable if you do the talking.

I’m sure they would want to do the talking if there was money to be made. You recently launched your cannabis brand, Revenant. How is that going?

KT: We have launched in California. The brand is doing well

and we believe that if we are successful in California, we can take the brand anywhere. I am originally from California so I already had a dispensary that I fought for that I am part owner of in Moreno Valley called Shango. I also have a micro-license in California right outside of San Diego. I have been told that come October, we can begin the process to start cultivation.

San Diego has had a moratorium on cultivation, but that will soon change. Revenant is big, and I knew I couldn’t do it alone, so I brought in a few friends (McMahon, Williams, and Britton.)

Helping people is a big undertaking and what better way to further the message than to join forces with these guys.

SS: Absolutely. I feel like the majority of young people are already on board with cannabis. Reaching those in their 40's and older is instrumental. And, I think you have just the team to do it.

KT: I think so too. Our team of former NFL players along with

the consistency of our products is what makes us stand out.

The strains in our Revenant line are strains myself and the guys are using. Some are very low in THC but they are extremely effective. Most athletes have been high on pills for a very long time and they’re sick of it. I know I was.

SS: Football is generally presented as a clean-cut, allAmerican sport. Any pushback from fans of the game from your connection to cannabis?

KT: All the time. People are still very uneducated. And there

are many people who just do not want to understand this plant. You can’t do anything about that and we have enough momentum to keep going. It has really come to the point where we are starting to not hear those voices anymore. It’s a quick, easy button to unfollow and block the negative ones. I am good with it. At the end of the day, we are here to help people and those numbers are going up.

SS: Will we see the Revenant brand here in Vegas?

KT: Oh, of course. Like I mentioned, California is our test

market and we plan to bring Revenant to as many legal states as possible.

Cullen Jenkins’ NFL career included stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and Washington Redskins. Like many athletes, both professional and amateur, Cullen endured daily pain which interfered with playing football and his everyday life. Once retired, he was told by other athletes about the advantages of CBD for pain and how it helped them tremendously.

Cullen did his research while conducting conversations with

medical professionals, and former professional athletes in other sports, to discuss the benefits of CBD. He knew he had to try something other than opioids, so CBD it was. Today, Cullen has found the relief he was looking for and has become an advocate for the use of CBD for pain, and mental relaxation. I sat down with him to talk about his NFL career and to find out about the work he is doing today.

MJ: Hi Cullen! You were in the NFL, will you please give us a little background on that?

CJ: I could go into my journey, as far as making it to the NFL but this is what I tell the young players that I coach: For me, my experience of being in the NFL was not so much about just being in the NFL, itself. One of the things I want people to see when they look at me, because nowadays most people see me as a former NFL player and they don’t see me as the person I am, the person I was, and how I got there. I grew up in Ypsilanti, Michigan. I was a screw up as a kid. I was in trouble all the time. Through my journey, this is what I’m most proud of, more than any accomplishments in my life- I was able to turn myself around and get refocused. I was an ineligible kid, even getting into school, going into grade school, ninth grade, trying to get into college, scholarships, coming home from college... my dad was a veteran and an

over the moon overachiever to boot. So he constantly was on me. I don't want to be Cullen Jenkins, the former football player.

My career as a football player is over. Now, what is driving me to do something? My purpose, for the first part of my journey, where I first went to college, even going through NFL, I got a lot of help and the education part never quite left.

MJ: At what point in your career do you feel like you started to see yourself as more than a football player, and later, more than a former football player? Did you feel like you had more work to do?

CJ: Definitely when I had my daughters.

I love seeing that they have my drive!

I made an oath that I would graduate before my daughters.

MJ: I think that is so cool and ironic since now you are a teacher in so many ways, even coaching. Do you experience long-term effects as a result of your sports injuries?

CJ: Every joint I have aches. Even when I'm standing, my feet, ankles, knees... the pain is not major but still aches. I had joint fusion surgery. I actually had several different surgeries related to football. CMC (affected everything), total ankle, shoulder, deviated septum. Not to mention having anxiety, trouble sleeping and concussion memory issues. Folks asked if I’ve seen the Will Smith film “Concussion” and honestly, no. I don’t want to focus my energy on that part of what’s actually happening to me and what potentially could.

MJ: What types of injuries do players (yourself included) typically sustain while playing American football?

CJ: Starting off with the hits and the amount of punishment the body takes in the game, it’s tremendous. And for me, playing in the trenches for 13 years, there’s

CBD HEALTH not a part of my body that hasn’t been injured. While you’re playing, once you’re labeled injury-prone and you’re not able to stay healthy or stay in the field, that affects your career, big-time, and can even end your career. We have to do what we have to do during the game to make sure we are staying in the field and that involves (a lot of times) taking pills. You take a lot of pills for the pain, to get through practice, to get through games… whatever it takes… so you can keep going. How to make a team, how to plan to keep a job if you get hurt. All the stipulations that come along with being hurt, showing weakness, or whatever it may be.

At some point you get older and you realize, I don’t even know how to own up to anything that’s going wrong with me anymore because I’m so used to showing toughness and fighting through the pain. We were trained entertainment soldiers. We learn to hide everything we are going through.

MJ: Would you mind explaining “the trenches” to our readers?

CJ: In the trenches is when you play on the front line. In the line, there is contact in every play, there’s no escaping. It’s a gift and a curse. You pay a price.

MJ: Man! Football is a tough sport! What led you to consider plant medicine as an alternative to pharmaceuticals?

CJ: I got convinced to try it after I retired.

Once I finished the game, I knew I couldn’t do this. It was one thing for me to take the pills to get through games and practices while it was my job and my career but once I finished, I couldn’t keep going down that same path. I got completely away from pills in all forms. One of the things was moving toward natural things. The cannabinoids, the CBD are natural ways of managing pain, anxiety, and even help you sleep at night.

Getting healing and relief from insomnia in a natural way is huge. Sleeping was another issue that we took a lot of pills for, just so you could be rested up for the next day. The plant based thing, and doing that instead with the cannabis plant is so tremendous.

MJ: Did you work with cannabis in any form while playing football? If not, what did you use at that time for pain and inflammation?

CJ: There is a lot of drug testing involved. I actually just took a drug test.

Personally, I wasn't initially “anti-weed”.

I may have smoked here or there, but I didn’t like how I felt. I often used Tylenol, Advil, Vicodin and Alcohol MJ: Do you use CBD only or products with THC as well?

CJ: I’m going to have to quote Dave Chappelle here, “I plead the FIF!” MJ: What improvements have you seen since working with cannabinoids?

CJ: Cannabinoids relax me. I can chill. I take it at night and I’m actually sleeping.

These plants have helped my insomnia.

Typically, my mind doesn’t stop. I got completely away from pills in all forms. One of the things was moving toward natural things. MJ: What changes would you like to see made in the NFL, other sports, and/or in general regarding cannabis?

CJ: I feel like, in Michigan, Big Pharma just says “NO” and shuts everything down. No recreational, no medical, and no education.

Very subjective and political with very fine lines. Plant medicine gets a bad rap because everybody just looks at it as getting high. It still has a stigma that, if you use it, you’re getting high, which isn’t the case. It’s come a long way with educating people, getting people to learn about the differences between the CBD and the THC but there is still a long way to go to get this movement going. Hey, give these people an option! This is something naturally made, it’s not chemically made in a factory. It’s literally a natural plant. Allow people to have that option.

MJ: Do you think addicts should be offered CBD? CJ: Yes. I think CBD is something we should give them to try. I don’t understand why this plant medicine isn’t recommended more often while doctors can encourage and persuade us to take opioids. Why can’t you offer cannabis?

MJ: I totally agree with you. What advice would you give to other football players regarding cannabis usage in any form?

CJ: First of all, I would say, be smart, be educated about what you’re doing and what you’re using. Especially if there are drug tests involved, or whatever. You want to make sure you are using something or doing something that is all natural. Besides that, I would say, don’t feel like you have to turn towards the pills and the different things that are being forced on you just to get you by. If there is a healthier alternative, give it a shot.

MJ: That’s great advice! Are you affiliated with, or do you run your own cannabis company?

CJ: Yes. I’ve done some work with Fresh Farms CBD. MJ: Can you tell me more about that?

CJ: Fresh Farms CBD is a company that I’ve been involved in and working with a lot.

Their products are all natural and American made. I’m bringing awareness to healing people in a natural way.

MJ: I like that! Are you looking to get into the Nevada market?

The Blazed Chef >>>

s cannabis becomes further normalized with the increasing number of states that are legalizing the plant, so too does the normalization of cannabis’ infusions in cooking and the vast culinary arts.

Particularly within a city so notorious for its culinary scene, Las Vegas has become a home for cannabis chefs of all varieties and cooking styles. From baked treats to classic American fare to meals worthy to be served at The Capital Grill, the diverse food profiles and genres of cooking from cannachefs in Las Vegas would make those with a refined pallet feel that they’re in a cannabisinfused food wonderland.

Able to be hired for almost any private event in mind, these chefs are quickly becoming mainstays in the private cannabis event space. I myself have met and consumed the delicious dishes of canna-chefs at events ranging from the Cannabis Wedding Expo, privately held panel discussion talks and recently at Haze Radio’s Secret Cup, the media company’s invite-only cannabis cup who’s winners were announced at the 2021 Las Vegas Cannabis Awards.

There, as extracts and flower were being pressed, smoked and dabbed, I tried the foods of a chef who’s combined her two loves of cannabis and the culinary arts and intertwined them in the most delectable of ways.

From a youthful age, Elyza Elio was always cooking in the kitchen with her family members. Born in San Diego but mainly raised in my fellow hometown of Houston, Elio comes from a combined heritage of Filipino and Italian, two countries known

in their own right for their unique cuisine and for making cooking a family activity.

Through those years, she perfected all types of meals, some of which would later become featured recipes in her own culinary art and catering menus. One such example Elio pointed out was an infused lumpia recipe, a common spring roll dish native to Indonesia and The Phillipines area.

As Elio and I can both attest to, any aspiring chef should consider themselves fortunate to grow up in a city with such a complex and varied background as Clutch City.

Surely with objections from Californians, the authentic Mexican food found so wonderfully in droves in Houston is of a quality unlike anywhere found in the Golden State. There’s a considerably large Vietnamese community in 713/832 as well, so banh mi and pho options are plentiful.

And with the added benefit of sharing a close border with Louisiana, Houstonians don’t have to cross a state border to find Cajun cuisine of equal quality to New Orleans. And, because it was the city I was raised and truly became a Jewish American in, I’m religiously obligated to mention numerous Jewish delis, from my Bubbie’s favorite spot The Bagel Shop to Kenny and Ziggy’s New York Deli. An honorable mention to Three Brothers Bakery, a bakery in business since 1949 and started by three Jewish brothers, all of whom were Holocaust survivors .

Needless to say, the vastness of the food profiles of Houston are unlike anywhere else.

“It definitely left me open to trying new things,” Elio said about H Town’s influence on her culinary artistry, “but some of my cooking influence definitely comes from Houston and then also from California.”

With additional inspiration from San Diego’s

noticeably diverse cuisine on their own part, Elio has exceptional cities serving as her culinary influence.

Tired of working in the traditional monotony of the 9-5 sales job, Elio decided it was the time to combine her two interests in a way that would be both advantageous and personally rewarding towards those interests.

Similarly to the journey of infused cannabis cuisine, Elio started with the usual pastry baking before upgrading drastically into elegant meals possibly also found in Michelin star-earning restaurants. While Elio enjoys baking, something about fullfledged cooking of infused meals to be remembered interested the chef, more.

Meals only served in the finest of upscale dining restaurants or meals that the regular cannabis consumer couldn’t think of a conceivable way to possibly infuse.

Elio’s inaugural event was the afterparty of the mega-popular Magical Butter brand following a Champs Trade Show- a high profile event to debut at. Along with six other chefs, Elio collaborated and each provided a different yet equally enjoyable menu. As a caterer for several kinds of private events, Elio’s detailed catalog featured on The Blazed Chef’s Instagram page spans all styles and genres of the culinary arts. A vast variety of sweet and savory meals for all hours of the day, rivaling entire cruise ships for their variety of cuisine options.

Elio prefers to speak with whichever client books the chef and tailor a menu based on their desires and specifications. From taco bars and pulled pork sliders to seafood bowls big enough to feed 10 people, Elio could plan and easily adapt to just about any culinary requests and dietary preferences.

SPOTLIGHT Lamb chops, grilled chicken pesto of a quality far higher than Olive Garden, breakfast spreads so elaborate it would make Leslie Knope jealous.

Butternut squash ravioli, purple truffle mashed potatoes, shrimp pho. Savory French toast sandwiches, purple vegan ceviche and arguably the pinnacle of Elio’s class as a fine dining chef, infused Connecticut lobster tails and crab legs.

Either because Elio mentioned these would be events she’d be open to cater (or because I’ve seen ten couples become engaged over the past week on Facebook) I feel obligated to say that Elio does cater weddings.

As for an especially sweet dessert, Elio’s menu has numerous options.

“I’ve done creme brulee, pineapple upside down cakes, raspberry tart, scones, coffee cakes.”

To her credit, Elio is an in demand chef. 420 brunches across the Las Vegas Valley, The Drop LV’s third anniversary Roll Up and Pour Up, the aforementioned Haze Radio Secret Cup, Women Grow events and so many more events and private dinners across California. If you attend almost any cannabis-related event in Las Vegas, you’re bound to run into The Blazed Chef and her expansive menu offerings.

As for a chef as creative and adaptable as Elio, the sky’s the limit for where The Blazed Chef’s culinary creations can go next.

ASHLEY HUDSON Budtender at PLANET 13 Ashley Hudson is a budtender at The World's Largest Dispensary Complex, Planet 13. Ashley is a seasoned budtender with over 2 years of budtending under her belt and unstoppable passion for delivering excellent customer service. We spoke with Ashley about working as a budtender in Las Vegas, her tenacity and exuberance when explaining her love for budtending was infectious. How did you get your start in the cannabis industry?

Moving to Las Vegas, made me a FIRM believer in the statement, "it's not what you know, but who you know!" So one night I was posted up at one of my favorite bars, shooting a little pool, being my usual social self, and made a new friend that worked at a local dispensary. She mentioned how she thought I should come bring in my resume and talk to the owners of the dispensary, and I did just that! It definitely took confidence and with a little help from my birth date (4/20) I WAS HIRED!

What do you enjoy most about being a budtender?

Honestly, the accessibility to products and product knowledge. Also, the continuous amount of information that I'm surrounded by at Planet 13. I love connecting with my guests and making their "shoulders drop", meaning I love for them to relax...trust...and enjoy the ride! I give my guest a feeling of "everything is under control" and once I see those shoulders drop...every little thing is gonna be alright!

What's the best advice to give to a first time consumer?

Start in small concentrations and work your way up, there's no reason to try to rush the high. Drink plenty of water, and eat something before consuming edibles.

Has budtending changed your views/thoughts about cannabis? If so, how?

Budtending has only opened my views and thoughts on cannabis. In particular, the many avenues the industry has

to offer. The numerous job and career options are abundant in Vegas, there's something for everyone!

What kind of advice would you give to new budtenders?

In the best way possible, I try to take something from everyone I meet. If a manager asks me how I'm doing, I make the attempt to engage. In a sense of giving mutual respect. People in management positions are there for a reason and I love asking for their success story or how they became a manager? (There's usually a little advice dropped...PICK IT UP!) And finally, If you don't ask, you won't know...ASK QUESTIONS! Be like a sponge and absorb all you can.

What have you learned that has been the most rewarding to your development as a budtender?

The most rewarding thing that I have learned is to never be afraid. I'm a very sales oriented budtender, I shoot shots all day and go for the gold! If I can't suggest new products, I can't develop as a budtender.

Don't be afraid of upselling products you know will help consumers enjoy their experience, "Scared money, don't make money!''

Confidence is KEY!

What’s your favorite way to consume?

I love blunts sooo much, and dabs...and edibles...and ooooh boy, topicals! I can't choose! I don't limit my guests, so I won't limit myself.

I like to stay "well-rounded" so I can spread the knowledge and still have a killer high.

What is your favorite pastime, when you’re not budtending?

I love music! I haven't played much lately, but drumming is my passion. I've played since I was 7 years old. I enjoy shooting pool, karaoke and most recently, going to AREA 15! What a dynamic complex!

What’s your favorite Terpene and why?

My favorite terpene is terpinolene! I'm a flavor girl, taste is everything to me! I love the effects of terpinolene because of its versatility in certain strains, it can be found in solid sativas like durban poison and in loud indicas like orange 43!

What have you been smoking on?

I've been smoking on Tyson Ranch, Master Kush. It's a KO! Greenlife Productions has a MAC Stomper with Sensational flavor. Finally, Nature's Chemistry's Wedding Cake, after smoking it's time for sleep, it's a sedative and soothing body high.

allowed me to figure out what makes me feel the best and what features I prefer to stay away from now that I am able to fully understand terpene profiles. My appreciation for cannabis in general has grown now that I interact with it all day, such as admiring particular physical features, flavors, and aromas more than before.

What kind of advice would you give to new budtenders?

Budtender at THE DISPENSARY Rowan Harmon is a cannabis lover who took her passion for the plant and landed a position as a budtender at The Dispensary in Reno. Rowan enjoys helping her customers with a holistic approach to ensure that consumers attain the kind of high that they are trying to achieve.

She believes in the healing power of the cannabis plant and it has made a positive impact on the customers she serves.

How did you get your start in the cannabis industry?

I've always been passionate about plant medicine and wanted to help people using homeopathic methods. Without a science degree under my belt, the cannabis industry is an opportunity to help others with plant products and the only entry level requirement is age. My best friend, Bre, and I applied together and got into the industry simultaneously. Having her with me to learn and grow in the industry together has made the experience so smooth and I’m so grateful for that.

What do you enjoy most about being a budtender?

My favorite part of budtending is making connections with customers and building relationships and trust in order to find what's most suited for them. This is the most intimate of any customer service job I’ve had; during consultations I get to know someone in a more vulnerable way. I love being a resource for consumers who want to know more about the product they are interested in using.

What is the best advice to give to a first time consumer?

Making your customer feel comfortable is so important!

Dispensaries are overwhelming for someone who isn’t sure what they need.

With so many choices and products, the budtender should assess the needs/wants of the customer and act as a mentor to guide the patient in the direction necessary. A satisfied customer comes from pairing your knowledge of cannabis and your inventory together in order to find products that are most suitable for the situation.

What have you learned that has been the most rewarding to your development as a budtender?

It’s not all about the THC percentage! We are misled to believe that the higher the THC is the only correlation to the strength of psychoactive effects you feel. The terpene profile causes an "entourage effect” intensifying the high in a more directional way. Before budtending, I would also go for the highest THC content when purchasing product, now I know that high amounts of terpenes make the effects that I desire stronger. I feel fortunate to budtend in a state that requires the listed terpene profile. Because of this, I am able to learn about how terpenes found in all plants make you feel.

What is your favorite pastime when you’re not budtending?

I love spending time outside, lots of planting and hiking. Earlier in the summer, I ventured out to Plumas County every weekend to check out the lakes with my blowup paddle board.

My advice for a first time cannabis consumer is being patient in feeling the onset effects, that’s how so many people get “too high,” by ingesting or smoking more before the cannabinoids have fully kicked in. Setting up your environment with foods, music, smells, etc. that you like can make you feel more comfortable as you start to feel psychoactive effects of THC.

What’s your favorite terpene and why?

Has budtending changed your views or thoughts on cannabis, if so how?

Now I am much more intentional in my own consumption.

Budtending has opened me up to so much information that I take into consideration when making my personal purchases. It

I love limonene the most for a mood boost and flavor enhancer, but I have a particular terpene combo I’ve been loving even more; the citrus/ berry taste of limonene and linalool together. They get me moving and creative while keeping my mind balanced. This is my most functional combo for getting things done!

Recently I got some gorgeous GLP Grape Pie #5, a super heavy body indica that smells like fruity hops. I really love to use this flower for unwinding after work, it’s a major pain reliever. GLP got it so tasty, it's irresistible at all hours. This is an indica that I will also pair with my morning coffee to start the day off zen.

Looking Forward to

Consumption Lounges in Nevada

fter years of speculation followed by deliberation and debate, social cannabis consumption lounges will soon be a reality in Nevada. While Las Vegas has had a miniature preview of how a consumption lounge would resemble with the only operating lounge of Nuwu’s Vegas Tasting Room, this would be a new venture for the rest of The Silver State but one that could be prosperous nevertheless. Especially in a city that received 42 million tourists in 2019, the advent of multiple consumption lounge options would allow countless visitors a safe and fitting area to consume cannabis, ideally free from any public consumption violations.

Those adamantly in support of the consumption lounges must remember that the entire legislative process to allow consumption lounges in Nevada via Assembly Bill 341 all began with one Assemblyman, Speaker Pro Tempore Steve Yeager. Spending eight years in the Clark County Public Defender’s Office and Assemblyman since 2016, Yeager is quite averse in the multi-layered landscape of Las Vegas politics and law.

While the activists and organizations whose actions were instrumental with the eventual passing of Assembly Bill 341 such as the Nevada Chamber of Cannabis must be commended in their own right, Yeager was the ONLY elected Nevada State Assembly member to author or sponsor this bill. Not a single one of the other 41 Assembly members offered to sponsor AB 341, a bill surely to be historic in Nevada.

“Interestingly enough, no other legislator seemed to be nearly as upfront about this issue.” Yeager said, “and so ultimately I decided to just carry this issue on my own.

What else is odd is that if you look at AB 341, my name is the only one as a sponsor and that’s kinda unique because normally there are multiple names on bills.”

Yeager brings up that this lack of fellow legislative engagement is primarily due to two factors- one being the limited personal contact due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the other being that the barrage of questions that any potential legislative sponsor would likely have to deal with from both a supportive and deeply oppositional public.

“If I had any political capital or goodwill to use in the building, I wanted to use it on this bill because it would have been a shame if we went another session without getting this bill through.”

Suspensefully, AB 341 almost didn’t survive the grueling and unnecessarily long Legislative process. As Yeager explains, bills that require budget funds to implement usually take longer to plan out, traditionally decided upon during the last week of the session.

Because the Cannabis Compliance Board needed additional funds to implement the social consumption lounge program and regulations, they asked the Nevada Legislature.

“Once we got the bill out of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, it went to the Ways and Means Committee. It sat there until the last eight or nine days of session, we were really cutting it close. And then once we got it out of there, we got it to the Senate.

Get it processed and over to the governor’s office to get signed.”

STEVE YEAGER Yeager even said through conversations with the staff of Governor Sisolak’s office, they seemed receptive towards the bill.

Furthermore, Yeager says the CCB was especially open towards the idea of consumption lounges.

“The CCB certainly understood this issue of public consumption being illegal with all the tourists and I think the governor did, too. But from Governor Sisolak’s staff’s perspective, it was more about creating jobs and economic growth coming out of the pandemic with the opening of lounges.

Of course, they had concerns about public safety and making sure that we got these lounges open and running in a way we would be proud of.”

a registered Democrat and among Democratic leadership in the state, Yeager wonders if his party affiliation may have played an additional role in the bill’s opposition among Nevada Republicans.

Realizing that AB 341 needed a two-thirds vote to pass the bill, it certainly appears that some Republicans used their potential sponsorship of the bill to discuss a matter more pertinent towards their district. In fact, Yeager explained that the bill made it out of the Nevada Assembly by only one vote, meaning 29 of the 28 required votes were in favor. Of the 14 votes needed in the Senate, AB 341 actually received 18 votes.

As for social equity’s inclusion into the consumption lounge process, Yeager has quite the report.

Since my previous report with Nicole Buffong, Western Regional Director for Minorities for Medical Marijuana, the CCB-created social equity committee mentioned in our discussion has become fully into fruition. With a lineup consisting of Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community Founder A’Esha Goins as Chair, the Social Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee also has such qualified professionals as Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford and Chamber of Cannabis President Tina Ulman.

According to the announcement made via Twitter by the CCB, the committee will be to “review and make recommendations on matters related to the accessibility for and participation of diverse owners in the cannabis industry.”

Yeager explained. “It also talks about the CCB coming up with regulations to rank

those applications based on a score and it specifically mentions taking into account diversity on the basis of race, ethnicity or gender of the applicants. Beyond a social equity aspect, I think there was a real desire from everyone working on this bill to better diversify our industry.”

Luckily for curious members of the public and in a move wildly different from The Department of Taxation’s usual evasion towards public involvement unless said “public” came from intergenerational wealth, both the social equity committee and the CCB will be holding public hearings and workshops about their actions and decisions as they’re being discussed.

When asked why in his own words that the District 9 Assemblyman supports the opening of consumption lounges, he gave an answer that’s certainly complimentary towards the professionalism of the Nevada cannabis industry that he’s witnessed on plentiful occasions.

“Ultimately, once the CCB has their final regulations and recommendations, the Legislature also has the ability to pull those regulations in and make suggestions if we don’t believe it’s adequate.” the Assemblyman explained.

Pertaining to matters related to “the effects of cannabis on law enforcement, businesses and consumers.” Because his committee is shared with relevant figures such as Detective Josh Garber of the LVMPD and quite notably the Executive Director of Nevada cannabis’ former secretive and scandal-ridden regulators, Melanie Young.

Superfoods, Super Plants, Super Healthy!

BY SHARON lETTS #NotJustCannabis Prior to the late 1930s and the birth of the pharmaceutical industry, the practice of Apothecary - making remedies from plants - was the way we healed and prevented illness on this planet. In this respect, pharmaceuticals are a fairly new mode of treating illness - and still very much experimental with myriad negative side effects.

In fact, the word “drug” came from the Dutch word “Drog,” or the wooden crate plant materials were shipped in. Drugs were all about plants.

Beatrix Potter wrote The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1893, with millions of children and adults alike reading of Peter’s mother putting him to bed with a cup of chamomile tea after he’d made a feast out of Mr. McGregor’s garden.

Think of this as a doorway into the life of other plants I incorporate into my personal daily dosing. The plants I brag on just as much as cannabis. Because there’s a plant for everything, and many of these plants have many of the same benefits as cannabis, with overlapping benefits. Put them together with cannabis and you have a full profile of cannabinoids, terpenes, and a world of beneficial compounds, all working together with your biological systems, supporting optimal health.

When cannabis came into my life as medicine nearly ten years ago I had been eating from my own home garden all of my adult life. I raised my daughter in the garden, teaching her how to grow her own food at a young age.

But, I really didn’t know just how important including as many plants into your diet was - specifically beneficial herbs..

When they told us to eat our vegetables, they should have scared the shit out of us. They should have told us it’s a matter of life and death, because it is.

Important to note that plant propaganda is real, making garnering help from beneficial herbs a challenge for the average person.

Searches on most of these herbs found medical sites warning of negative effects, stating nothing is really known about plants and their healing properties, while herbalists sites expound on the known benefits and exceptional healing found in the garden. I feel privileged to be educated on plant remedies.

Sadly, chamomile and many other potent medicinal plants have been reduced to a cup of tea over the years, or into mild tinctures treating symptom relief only. It wasn’t until I learned about making cannabis oil concentrate in an alcohol reduction that I realized the value of the essential oils of plants and how life changing they can be, with little negative side effects and lots of healing.

Super Plants = Superfoods The definition of a superfood is any nutrient rich plant containing many beneficial compounds, able to treat multiple symptoms and disorders.

Superfoods strengthen our immune system, while addressing all 11 of our biological systems via the endocannabinoid system - a little known system discovered in 1992 at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem by Dr. Lumir Hanus, with American researcher, Dr. William Devane. The endocannabinoid system was found to distribute beneficial plant-based compounds to all our systems, preventing illness and keeping us healthy.

Sidenote: Dogs and cats have the same biological systems as humans, and why they respond well to plant medicine.

According to Biology Online.com, the systems supported by plants are: integumentary system, lymphatic system, muscular system, nervous system, reproductive system, respiratory system, skeletal system, endocrine system, immune system, and urinary system.

A search for superfoods comes up short, as within the brief list of berries, broccoli and salmon, are “leafy greens.” While many might assume lettuce and spinach are at the top of the list, beneficial herbs are sorely missing.

In April of 2010 a paper was published (link below) showing ten essential oils tested on acne (bacterial) and cancer cells. They included: mint, ginger, lemon, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender, chamomile, thyme, rose, and cinnamon.

Of the ten, thyme, cinnamon and rose essential oils were said to exhibit the best bactericidal activities, killing acne in five minutes.

Thyme showed the strongest cytotoxicity towards human cancer cells. All ten were said to be significantly stronger in treating human lung carcinoma and human breast cancer.

The studies on plants listing their benefits and in treating numerous ailments are published for all to see. The concentrations of essential oils and the use of isolated compounds are key in determining the efficacy.

For example, when studying cannabis, is the study using an isolated single compound, or the whole plant? This rule of thumb can be used in all plant-based studies and has everything to do with the outcomes. The difference in treating symptoms or putting an ailment into remission has everything to do with the strength of the plant concentrate used.

Sharon’s List of Super Plants Chamomile Benefits: antidepressant, antianxiety, anti inflammatory, anti infection, analgesic/pain, antioxidant, sleep and relaxation, lowers blood sugars/diabetes, skin conditions, auto-immune system builder.

Chamomile is commonly known and used for calming and inducing sleep. It’s digestive benefits are not widely known, as most in the western world reach for over the counter medications for bloating or constipation. The bonus of enjoying a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime is prevention against infection, reducing inflammation in the body, and treating depression, as it lifts endorphins and creates dopamine in the brain, giving an overall feeling of well being.

Chamomile also treats anxiety and diminishes panic attacks. Make a concentrated infusion and this strong herb can be life changing.

On a personal note, chamomile capsules made in a simple coconut infusion, then put into capsules, got me off of Valium for my own anxiety and hormonal depression.

Guanabana Benefits: anti-oxidant, digestive issues, anti-inflammatory, regulates high blood pressure, anti-bacterial, auto-immune system builder.

For instance, in the study finding that THC can trigger existing psychosis, a high concentration of THC via an isolate was used.

Meaning, the person receiving the dose was getting pure THC without any supporting compounds from the plant - making the outcome limited and severe in its findings.

Grown and commonly used in South America, this fruit known as soursop or custard apple is also used for its leaves to make tea, treating stomach ailments, fevers and parasitic infections, hypertension and rheumatism. It’s also used as a sedative. But the commonly known use for guanabana is as an antioxidant in treating cancer and killing cancer cells.

Using the whole plant, be it cannabis or oregano, with all supporting beneficial compounds, is key in treating any illness, while supporting the endocannabinoid system properly. Breaking down the plant to formulate in order to patent for profit, is where we fall short with plant remedies, in my humble opinion.

Rosemary Benefits: brain function/clarity/memory/mood, antianxiety, stimulates hair growth, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, digestive help, destressor, helps circulation, anti-infection, anti-oxidant, autoimmune system builder.

Here’s my own short list of superfoods via beneficial, immunesystem-building herbs, with a recipe for a simple infusion for tincture using either a light oil, vinegar, or an alcohol base.

Rosemary is one of the most underrated herbs and one of the most efficient in treating infections. It also gives clarity, improving memory. It’s also been found to be effective in killing and preventing cancer cells from growing (study below). In a study looking at ten antioxidant plants, Rosemary was at the top of the list with a 97 percent success rate in a laboratory study.

Stinging Nettles Benefits: anti inflammatory/pain, lowers blood pressure, treats hay fever/respiratory support, lowers blood sugars/diabetes, detoxification (kidney/liver), increases circulation, prostate health (frequent urination), promotes wound healing, autoimmune system builder.

I first found out about stinging nettles after having a bad bout of hayfever a few summers ago. Soaked in gin, it’s become my go-to tincture for allergies, but it’s also another superfood, able to address many ailments including, gout, arthritis, and an enlarged prostate gland. Conflicting information has nettles both lauded for its help in detoxing the liver and kidneys by herbalists, and blaming it for complications thereof by medical sites. This educated stoner will trust the plant.

Thyme Benefits: antioxidant, anti infection, anti-viral, bronchial support, sore throat, pain, digestive issues, flatulence (gas), parasitic worm infections, skin disorders, detoxification (increase good fats in brain, liver and kidneys), auto-immune system builder.

Thyme is another powerful super plant, able to treat many infections and ailments, including being an antifungal, viral, with cancer fighting compounds. Thyme was found to be the most powerful at killing cancer cells in a laboratory study (link below).

Oregano Benefits: antioxidant, anti infection/viral, fungal, anti inflammatory, regulates blood pressure, helps with digestion, bronchial issues, and calms nerves, auto-immune system builder.

Oregano is yet another powerful herb able to treat myriad infections and enhanced non-specific immunity and disease resistance . It’s also a cancer fighting plant, and an immune

system builder. But a simple search on its uses came up short, with pizza and sauce at the top of the search list!

Note: Most of these plants have a full profile of vitamins and minerals. Do your own research to find out more.

Immune System Building, Preventive Tincture The following tincture can be made by infusion of a light oil, such as grapeseed or sunflower; or with olive oil to infuse foods. The plants can also be steeped in gin or apple cider vinegar (ACV), if the patient can’t have alcohol. ¼ c. each dried rosemary leaves, chamomile flower, guanabana leaves, stinging nettles (can also use any combination of herbs from above list) Add all to one liter of oil in a crockpot and steep on low for 2-3 hours.

Strain and decant. Dose with a teaspoon or put in a bottle with a dropper.

Dose: 1 ml. once a day.

If using gin or ACV, cold-steep in a cool cupboard for up to one week, or when the color is a light brown. Strain and decant as above. Use gin infusion as a tincture, or make a beneficial cocktail.

I’ve traveled around the state of Nevada more than most people.

From Battle Mountain to Boulder City, and Wells to Winnemucca, I’ve covered a lot of ground…and seen a lot of beautiful landscapes.

So when a couple weeks ago, I read about a place that was said to be considered the “most beautiful” place in Nevada, I was skeptical.

Says who?! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…isn’t it?

I mean, anyone who has watched a giant harvest moon rise in a purple-blue twilight sky above the glowing orange rocks of Valley of Fire might justifiably claim that this surreal, red-rock Mars-scape is the “most beautiful” place in Nevada. There’s a reason it was considered sacred to the Paiutes- it’s absolutely spectacular!

But ask a rancher, and he or she might harbor a particular affinity for the wide-open sagebrush plains of central Nevada, where the skies stretch on for what seems like forever, either an eternal blue dotted with fluffy white clouds or ablaze in the psychedelic colors of a high desert sunset. The echo of Pony Express hoofbeats from distant mountain ranges thrums with a ghostly insistence that this is the “most beautiful” place in Nevada.

Then there’s Lake Tahoe- anyone who has ever skinny-dipped in the crystal clear turquoise blue waters of Secret Cove, where a rich, fragrant pine forest meets a golden sandy beach, might have a thing or two to say about the “most beautiful” place in Nevada, too.

For that matter, the entire Nevada side of the lake is a pretty hefty contender!

And what about Red Rock Canyon, outside Vegas? The escarpment lights up in an explosion of pinks, purples, oranges and blues when the setting sun hits just right, and secret tropical oases with

cascading waterfalls and orchids (yes orchids!) await hikers in the recesses of many side canyons. The fact that you can look back over your shoulder and see the Vegas Strip twinkling in the background just makes this astonishing landscape all the more otherworldly.

But none of these notable landscapes are generally considered to be “the most” beautiful place in Nevada. That honor goes to the Ruby Mountains’ Lamoille Canyon. And so, I recently set out to see for myself if the hype was true.

The Ruby Mountains rise to a height of 11,388 feet above the vast sagebrush plains of northeastern Nevada, just south of the town of Elko. Notable for their geographic prominence, the Rubies are also the wettest mountain range in Nevada, enabling a greater biodiversity than seen elsewhere in the state. This also leads to a fantastic snowpack every winter. In fact, the Rubies are one of the only places in the continental U.S. where one can heli-ski (that is, charter a helicopter to drop you off at the top of a mountain, from whence you make your way back down to a predetermined pick-up point without any official marked runs). They don’t call the Rubies “the Alps of Nevada” for nothing!

Right in the middle of the Rubies is Lamoille Canyon, carved by glaciers thousands of years ago, exploding with aspen groves, wildflowers, lush meadows and rushing streams and crisscrossed with hiking trails that allow visitors to get up close and personal with what’s called the “Yosemite of Nevada.”

Could all of this be true? It sounded like a truckload of state tourism board hooey to me, so back in late July I packed up my jaundiced eye and headed to check it out, fully prepared to be underwhelmed.

But it was tough to stay cynical as I headed south out of Elko, passing through lush, gorgeous farmland on a road that eventually wound up, up and up through thickening stands of trees, towering rock formations, and then entered the mouth of the glacier-canyon itself.

And by the time I finally reached the end of Lamoille Canyon Road, I was convinced: this might not be “the most” beautiful place in Nevada, but it sure was beautiful!

I parked my car, strapped on my hiking boots, and hit the trail to Lamoille Lake, and all along the way, was totally gobsmacked by the profusion of brilliant wildflowers beside babbling mountain streams and groves of giant pines, all in the craggy shadows of the majestic mountain peaks surrounding me. I came into this a total skeptic, but it really was like the Yosemite of Nevada.

By the time I peeled off my clothes for a skinny dip in beautiful, alpine Lake Lamoille, I was convinced- this place was totally beautiful, in a way not often seen in the Great Basin. The Rubies really are like a miniature outcropping of the Sierras, right in the middle of our backyard. Lucky us!

But…was it the most beautiful?

I found myself reflecting on those red rock moonrises and flaming sagebrush sunsets…remembering the ancient, gnarled majesty of the bristlecone pines on Wheeler Peak, the surreal vast playa of the Black Rock Desert, and the towering walls of Black Canyon, sweeping up on either side of the emerald green Colorado River as it emerges in lazy, neutered splendor from the Hoover Dam to wend its way past hot springs and colorful sandy beaches on its way south.

Naming the most beautiful place in Nevada is like picking your favorite child- it’s impossible, in a state with this much geologic diversity. Of course, a lot of it depends on personal preference and some depends on regional loyalty. But for me, the only conclusion I could come to was this: Lamoille Canyon really is the most beautiful place…. in Lamoille Canyon!

A New Lease >>> on Life

irst and foremost, those of us in the cannabis social equity movement know that folks who have not been directly impacted by the drug war are not fully capable of empathizing with individuals directly impacted by its destructive policies and stigma-- just like an individual born into wealth, stability, or privilege, would not fully understand the terrors of poverty and racism. Despite this, these individuals can do one thing: listen. Restorative justice and cannabis social equity will advance a lot quicker if we remain committed to understanding the decades of turmoil and confusion bestowed on Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities. For decades, destructive drug policies left futures diminished and families completely disfigured for things that are not only legal at the moment but were initially outlawed to intentionally criminalize and further subjugate, or oppress, ethnic groups.

System of Turmoil One individual who is familiar with this system of turmoil is Adam DeLorme.

Delorme grew up in Reno, Nevada on the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. He is a full blooded Native American and a Marine Corps veteran. DeLorme was brought up in a traditional Native American household, where he participated in powwows which included Indian dancing, singing with their drum group, and playing hand-game, a traditional gambling game in Native culture. Every Sunday, DeLorme and his family would go to the sweat lodge, upholding an ancient traditional ceremony where they pray, and purify the mind, body, and spirit. Adam says the

home he grew up in was always a safe and happy place.

Adam DeLorme graduated from Washoe High School at Wittenberg Hall with a 4.0 GPA. Though he was sent there for behavioral issues while on felony probation for using cannabis at the age of 16, he worked hard and remained steadfast. Following his high school graduation, Adam enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to be a part of the nation's most elite fighting force.

His grandfather was a Marine in Korea and became the golden gloves boxing champion of the Marine Corps in his weight class. Adam said being a Marine filled him with a sense of belonging to something special and revered. He cherished his status with the military but during that time his alcohol intake spiralled out of control which led him to receive a General Discharge which was reduced to a Bad Conduct Discharge that remains in his background information. Not to mention, he also lost his educational, health, home loan, and retirement benefits from the military.

However, Adam returned home and soon met a woman who became his wife.

Pregnant with their first child and in love, Jeanine and Adam got married two years later.

At 23 and married, Adam was living on a dry reservation (meaning no alcohol or drug use) in Reno and worked at warehouses between Reno and Sparks.

One day after leaving the local casino, Adam was stopped by tribal police while walking for appearing intoxicated. The police searched him and found a small amount of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia. This was a felony back then and he spent 30 days in jail for the charges. Years later, Adam said he got

a wake up call and quit cannabis and alcohol for 10 years after getting a DUI for driving under the influence of marijuana and possession which were misdemeanor crimes.

Fast forward to 2011 when Adam is experiencing homelessness and selling marijuana to survive, while at the same time going through a divorce and custody battle with his wife of 14 years and three kids. During this time in his life, Adam was convicted of a felony cannabis charge for having 2 pounds of marijuana and was sentenced to 12-32 months in the Nevada Department of Corrections. Adam said he was so unfamiliar with selling illicit drugs and had done so poorly that it led him right into the hands of police, reentering the felony class for a third time. Adam said his sentence was suspended pending a 30-day in-patient substance abuse treatment and probation. He was now dealing with two cases at the hardest point in his life- divorce and a felony drug case. Due to the stress of the moment, he resorted to drinking and marijuana use. For violating his probation, Adam DeLorme was sent to Tonopah Conservation Camp for 5 months before being paroled in January 2013. Yet, after two years of not seeing his children and searching for relief through cannabis consumption, his parole was revoked and he expired his sentence at Northern Nevada Correctional Center.

After that, Adam says he relapsed in 2016 after two good years of staying sober.

He had succumbed to his depression from not seeing his children and on Thanksgiving 2016 he got a DUI and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. His sentence consisted of 6 months suspended drivers license, DUI school, and fines. During the 2 weeks he

spent in jail waiting for his lab results, Adam said he decided he didn't want to continue being in and out of jail, and he admits that his true downfall was always alcoholism and not so much cannabis usage.

Something striking about Adam’s story is his use of the word relapse as he refers to cannabis use. Throughout Adam DeLorme’s adolescence and adulthood, he was subjugated to racist drug policies that criminalized cultural practices in subjugated communities.

Allegedly, American Indians have used cannabis since before the 1400’s and more widely than it is used today.

According to rumors, it was also used for pain, mental aid, energy, and was viewed as a sacred plant with many things to offer. However, today not all reservations, tribes, and Native churches agree that cannabis consumption should be tied to their cultural activities and have feverishly pushed back against this claim. This doesn’t come as a surprise considering federally recognized tribes in the U.S. have a relationship with the federal government which has cannabis listed as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substance Act of 1970.

According to the National Congress of American Indians (or NCAI), when tribal communities go through the process of becoming federally recognized they enter into a trust relationship with the government, or a government-togovernment relationship. With this relationship, best practices are established by tribal law, federal law, and state laws in order to benefit both the community and the United States. The Snyder Act of 1921, another component of the trust relationship in federal Indian Law, requires the Bureau of Indian Affairs to hire tribal government officials, Indian police, and Indian judges under the supervision of the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, amongst other things, which includes building practices to suppress drug and alcohol trafficking. Though it remains unclear, it's assumed that tribal communities participated in cannabis prohibition of the 30’s, 40’s and 60’s due to mass campaigns

by the U.S. federal government.

The criminalization of cannabis by the American government created not only generations of turmoil but also distortion. Cannabis education cannot focus on understanding the plant and its benefits alone. Education on cannabis must also include its historical outlawing and the devastating effects of cannabis criminalization on culture, tradition, and even self-image. For instance, had Adam grown up knowing how cannabis was used as a medicine by ancient communities in the 1400’s, would he have used the word relapse to describe self-medicating? Adam was continuously criminalized and subjected to felony status for his use of cannabis, which he internalized and built self-judgement around even though he admitted to alcohol being his true vice. This level of distortion and gaslighting on cannabis culture for generations has harmed communities and placed people in more disadvantaged situations.

In April 2020, Adam was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer after suffering shoulder pain for a year. He went through two chemotherapy cycles before having surgery to replace his left humerus bone.

Doctors installed an internal pain pump due to the pain he suffers from having his arm rebuilt with a metal sleeve and screws. Fortunately, his MRI’s and CT scans have shown no evidence of disease since his surgery. To handle the pain, Adam chose to use THC and CBD in edible form for relief. He is disabled due his left arm now being immoblie and so he lost his job as a package handler. Seeking support, he applied for SSI. He says, since being diagnosed with cancer and losing the ability to employ himself, this past year has been extremely challenging.

Currently unemployed and disabled, Adam is seeking a felony expungement “for a new lease on life and new opportunities” that being a member of the felony class makes difficult to obtain.

Adam says he has never lost hope through everything he's gone through and he is counting on our great nation to get it right.

Adam DeLorme, belonging to a historically oppressed community, continues to be disenfranchised by the very substance that brought in over $684 million dollars in sales to the state of Nevada last year. According to the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board’s 2021 report, most of these sales have benefited our white peers more than any other group due to over representation in ownership, executive board membership, upper management, and even entry level employment. While people like Adam are left alone to pick up the pieces of their lives, the privileged reap the benefits of a new booming industry. Our moral values are inside out, and as a country and community, they are in question.

Cannabis social equity remains an active movement in Nevada. In this movement, we don’t suppress the voices of the most impacted and we certainly don’t put commerce before people. We understand this is a pivotal moment, and this moment will continue to advance as long as the focus is truly restoration and reconciliation. This means listening to impacted people and understanding the political, economic, and social implications failed drug policies have had on Black, Brown and Indigeous communities for decades. Federal expungements should be the minimum to right the wrongs of a corrupt political movement created to intentionally criminalize Black, Indigenous, and Latino (BIL) culture.

What the Craze is All About

The biggest buzz lately about cannabis is delta-8, yet, everyone is wondering what the big buzz is about. Many of us have questions about the safety of consuming delta-8. So, I decided to utilize several resources to provide you all some answers that can provide a better understanding of the cannabinoid. In 2018, the Farm Bill explicitly preserved the FDA’s authority over hemp, removing it from the definition of “marijuana” in the Controlled Substances Act, which is pretty much the reason why there has been a craze about it in recent years. Δ9-THC and Δ8-THC are the only compounds in the cannabis plant that produce all the psychoactive effects.

Delta-8 is hemp derived, it is found in most cannabis plants and is usually extracted from CBD flower. Hemp contains CBGa (cannabigerolic acid), then it becomes THCa, which then becomes delta-9 when decarboxylated (lit up). Delta-8 is a degraded version of delta-9, which occurs due to oxidation. This may be the main reason that it is less potent than delta-.9, which is also why it doesn’t degrade quickly when exposed to oxygen, providing a longer shelf-life. Delta-8 can bind to the cannabinoid receptor CB1, but less is known about it’s binding with the CB2 receptor. CB1 is one of the largest systems in our body, it's located in the central nervous system. Areas like

our liver, pancreas, bone marrow, skin, lungs, brain, vascular system, muscles, gastrointestinal tract and reproductive organs are all in communication with our CB1 receptor. This is where delta-9-THC becomes medicine, it communicates with our entire body, providing therapeutic relief. Although, people like myself, my fellow scientists, doctors and colleagues, all believe there is not enough research proving that delta-8 is ready to hit the market without the research behind it. In comparison, we have more research with delta-9, which makes us more confident that we need more research before we can make recommendations. Especially since hemp is not regulated like cannabis is in legal states. All cannabis products require lab testing and COA’s (Certificate of Analysis) in order to be sellable. So, without lab testing, how do you know what molds, pesticides, and who knows what is in that hemp? Is it even worth risking inhaling or consuming something that you don’t know enough about? At the end of July, Las Vegas hosted the “Champs Trade Show” at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which was rumored to have been shut down due to an FBI/ DEA raid of Delta-8-THC in the early hours of the event. I personally was a guest at the event and received an email stating that the hours of operation had changed, so I went later in the day. I had industry friends reaching out to me, letting me know it was due to a raid and being that I received that message about the time change, it added up. However, that wasn’t the case at all. The FDA and DEA didn’t show up. This is really what happened: On June 4th, 2021, Governor Sisolak signed Nevada State Bill 49, which prohibited synthetic cannabinoids from being produced, sold, or offered

for sale in the state on the condition that the CCB (Cannabis Compliance Board) is authorized to employ the purposes of hearing disciplinary proceedings. We were told that the CCB showed up and checked out what companies were selling delta-8 at the event. I returned on the last day of the event and noticed that the delta-8 companies were back in full-effect.

Although, not many companies were taking payments. They didn’t say why, but they were prohibited from making transactions.

They would exchange their information, speak about their labs and facilities but could not promote, sell, or distribute any product.

My advice would be to wait! Wait until we have more information on delta-8, when the market becomes more regulated.

and Your Sex Life Cannabis can work wonders for your sex life. Recently, I wrote about how CBD can give your sex life a boost, but there are limits to what CBD can do.

Medical cannabis is a bit more potent, and so it can be even more effective than CBD alone if you’re using it for sexual enhancement purposes. Let’s talk about how those who partake in medical cannabis can also use it to reap the rewards in the bedroom.

Benefits of Medical Cannabis

Medical cannabis is effective at treating a wide array of conditions, including pain, anxiety, nausea, sleep troubles, eating disorders, epilepsy, and autism. The CDC estimates that one in five people suffer from chronic pain, which significantly impacts people’s sex lives. In essence, that means that medical cannabis could help 20% of the population with their sex life—disregarding the rest of the conditions it treats. That number rises sharply when you consider how many people are dealing with pain- and anxiety-causing conditions like cancer, multiple sclerosis, endometriosis, and more. A large portion of the population has conditions that could be helped in general by medical cannabis, and they would likely have better sex at the same time.

CBD helps alleviate many of the same medical issues, but it works on a smaller scale. CBD also does not produce any of the “high” feelings that medical cannabis with THC will. People who would like significant help shifting away from anxiety or pain may be better served by the more intense effects that medical cannabis has.

Why Medical Cannabis Can Improve Your Sex Life

Problems like performance anxiety, arthritis, pain during sex, the side effects of chemo, and many other common medical issues can get in between you and your best sex life. And while CBD products can take the edge off some of these issues, medical cannabis is proving to be a gamechanger. So, if you have been considering getting a medical marijuana card, it’s something that you can expect will help in the bedroom, too.

Medical cannabis can improve your creativity in the bedroom in ways that CBD simply can’t. This can be especially helpful for people with performance anxiety who may have trouble feeling inspired to be creative in the bedroom. Instead of being racked with intrusive thoughts about what their partner is thinking of their encounter, they can focus on trying new things and finding different ways to connect sexually.

Medical cannabis is particularly beneficial for women. Though it’s still being studied, research has shown that increased cannabis use corresponds directly with less prevalence of female sexual dysfunction.

The findings are so strong that some researchers have suggested that perhaps the endocannabinoid system is partially responsible for high sexual function in women.

Further, the euphoria associated with medical cannabis use can help people who have depression. Depression often conflicts with your sex drive, and cannabis can counteract this and put you in a mood that is more

conducive to intimacy. And it works the same way with anxiety. For most people, medical cannabis gives them a feeling of calmness that helps them stop thinking about whatever makes them nervous and instead focus on their partner.

How to Incorporate It in the Bedroom

It may take a bit of tinkering to perfect your medical cannabis use for the bedroom, so try again if it doesn’t work the way you want it to the first time. Different doses and strains can affect people differently, so notice how you feel when taking your medical cannabis. Try taking your medical cannabis and then using it for self-pleasure before trying it with a partner.

Timing is another significant factor in whether your medical cannabis makes your sex life better. Taking an edible or using a cannabis lubricant or lotion means you will have to wait quite a while to feel the effects.

However, the effects of edibles last much longer. So, if you are planning on taking your time in the bedroom, you may want to choose an edible so that you enjoy the effects throughout your lovemaking. Smoking or taking a sublingual tincture will get you results much faster, but they also wear off much faster.

Keep the Side Effects in Mind

Just like any medicine, medical cannabis has a few side effects. But with some advance planning, these issues don’t have to interfere with your intimate activities. For instance, after taking medical cannabis, you may have dry mouth, fatigue (sometimes called couch lock), dizziness, or paranoia. It is always a good idea to try medical marijuana before you know you’ll be getting intimate so that you can gauge the severity of any side effects and mitigate them in the future. If you get dry mouth and you plan to use your mouth, you’ll want to stay extra hydrated and use more lubricant than you otherwise would. Otherwise, the experience may be quite uncomfortable for both of you.

If you experience fatigue, dizziness, or paranoia, you may want to take a lighter dose than normal or take the dose well in advance so that the side effects are waning by the time you get into the bedroom. You could always use a different strain, too, as some are more paranoia- or fatigue-inducing than others. It can be helpful to read reviews of the specific strains online, but keep in mind that each strain can affect your individual body differently than other people’s bodies.

Though medical marijuana is not completely free from side effects, many people find that the widespread benefits of medical cannabis outweigh any downsides. Using the tips above, you can find out why so many people believe medical cannabis is a miracle drug for sex.

Infused Vegan Peanut

Butter Cookies

BY CHEF MISTY LOWNIK Who doesn't love a warm peanut butter cookie? Add some infused butter and this is the perfect recipe for a tasty evening dessert.

Recipe INGREDIENTS: 1 cup vegan butter infused 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tbsp vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups crunchy peanut butter 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 2 tbsp almond milk 2 1/2 cups flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp baking powder Pinch of salt for love, luck and happiness DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350°. Beat vegan infused butter and sugars just until incorporated. Add vanilla and almond milk blend. Add both peanut butters and blend. Add dry ingredients and blend. Scoop out dough with 1 inch ice cream scooper and roll into balls, place on parchment lined cookie sheet and use a fork to flatten and make criss cross shapes. Bake 10-20 minutes, depending on your love of a soft versus crunchy cookie . Store in fridge for up to two weeks or freeze them for up two months or longer. Enjoy! Makes about 52 cookies.
