Hopefully you are all back from the holiday season well rested and ready to go for another year.
It was pleasing to see a good turnout for the events and social occasions in December and January, and at least there were a few chances to get out and enjoy the occasional fine day among some pretty average weather.

Fortunately there were a couple of opportunities to drop in on branch members for a visit to look over their collections, a great way to spend some time when options for the usual activities summer activities are a bit limited, so thanks to those who took some time out of their day to host visitors.
Otherwise there’s been a fair bit of time spent looking after the business of keeping the branch running, the world might go on holiday over Christmas and New Years, but the emails and bills still keep coming and need attending to.
There’s plenty coming up, and accordingly entry forms published in The Hub and on the website, so make sure you check your calendar and get your entries in on time.
See you out and about

Welcome to 2026 and a new year of wonderful motoring!
As you will be aware there are plenty of rallies coming up over the next three months, including the Vero Festival of Historical Motoring Rally in Nelson this year.
Around home we have the Commercial and the Annual Rallies. We are also hosting the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand INC national executive meeting in early March. We will be looking for volunteers to help in the kitchen and setting up the meeting etc so if you are available please let me know?

Just as last year was coming to a close we had the children's Christmas party with lots of happy children having rides, running races and best of all when sant arrived. Thank you to all the elves that made it a success!
The Christmas social was the next Saturday in the barn where we all had a good time dancing and listening to John Forster and his crew.
Then came the boxing day picnic where we all had a good day and no rain this year. Thanks to Don and Judy Bennetts for putting it together.
Thanks to John Forster for organizing the Picnic run at Pegasus on Sunday the 4th with over thirty cars.
A big thank you for all the help in 2025 as without it events won’t happen. Plus any suggestions or ideas are also very welcome to make 2026 a successful year.
This month's “Just for interest”.......
Have you seen this before?

I had the opportunity to have a beer out in the Barn over the summer break. If you haven’t noticed there is a wee bit going on…. Peter Merrifield has been making the barn water tight. There has also been a gang of fairies working on the inside. To start with they have cleaned everything, removed staples and paraphernalia etc from beams, changed light bulbs. The curtains had to come down, for replacements, and old ones literally disintegrated when they fell to the floor.
You may well have guessed by now? The plaque that Pat Cutler put on the stone work above the fireplace in the barn. Pat Cutler must have been one for wise sayings. The green shelf mentioned is the mantel over the fireplace. Yes it was green once! Where he mentions “lum”, that is Irish for chimney, so what he is saying is “down crowd the fire but let everyone benefit from its warmth”

Fairies are hard at work! Look what's fueling them!

One side nearly finished What happens when you have rocket fuel? Watch that Bike!
The stories I have heard of the goings on in that barn over the years. This is a great opportunity to preserve our heritage. Watch this space to see changes to improve our facilities for all to enjoy!

It seems like a very long time since I’ve found myself at the computer writing out a Hub report. It was probably a welcome break, but having to think back about what has happened since about December and then writing it up gets the grey matter going. First up was the Veteran Car Club Christmas lunch, which was held a week later in Kathryn Smith’s very roomy shed – great shared salads, desserts and BBQ food and lots of catching up with other members, plus the chance to have a look again at the cars in the shed. There was a new one there this year – Robin Mundy’s 1907 De Dion, now for sale and in temporary storage there until a new custodian is found (see Trade Me for details). This is always an enjoyable and very social event. Next up for us was the One and Two-cylinder rally in Clyde on 6th and 7th December – a favourite event for Jenny and me. This year we had new organisers – Bruce and Shirley Shadbolt, who were on the case very early to ensure accommodation was organised and the final details sorted well in advance. Clyde is a long way to trailer the car, but we love the motoring in that area, the familiarity of the runs and venues we visit (in other words ‘no stress’), and the ability to motor, relax and socialise with other like-minded enthusiasts is just great. This year we were treated to a visit through the Clyde Dam which was informative and interesting to say the least. Our guide took us into the depths of the structure, including showing us the concrete wedge that will keep the dam intact in a major (magnitude 8) earthquake – but one of the technical challenges in the design to ensure the lights stay on if nature unleashes its wrath in some way in the future. Floods and fires also were afforded contingent responses. There were few new cars to the event this year too, including Paul and Lynette Heron’s Ford F from Gore, Chris Stephen’s 1904 Rambler (both of these cars came from the Robin Dixon collection), John & Deborah McLachlan’s 1907 Cadillac, Robert Wood’s newly restored 1904 curved dash Oldsmobile, and the 1910 In-

ternational High-wheeler which is part of Allan Dippie’s everexpanding collection in Wanaka. The closing dinner on Sunday evening at The Packhouse was superb, and Graham and Carol Wiblin (1909 Schacht from Marlborough) left with the rally trophy to look after for a year. Special thanks to Bruce and Shirley for organising this year’s event (incidentally, held in perfect weather), and they already have plans in place for the 2026 event, so we will return! If you have a single or twin-cylinder veteran car or motorcycle, make sure you get on their mailing list.
As I write this, tomorrow we’re heading off to Dunedin for a weekend away to once again take part in the Dunedin to Brighton Rally. Over the last couple of weeks I managed to finish off re-fitting the hood to the Wolseley 12/16, which has been off the car for a couple of years following two of the 3 hood bows breaking catastrophically. They had been made too light, and that combined with the very heavy hood material meant they just weren’t up to the job, having already failed and been repaired by me a couple of times in the past. We’ve had a bit of rain on the D2B over the past couple of years, and the way the weather forecast looks at the moment we’re in for more this year, so it will be good to have a bit more protection with the hood back on.
Now that that job is done it’s back onto trying to get the Wolseley 16/20 ready for the Vero Rally in Nelson in March, which I should have done well before now so I could get some confidence up before taking it that far from home. Never mind! The Veteran Car Club is having its Annual Summer Rally in mid-February so that’s the deadline date and the shakedown run for Vero. Just hope Summer returns by then!
Now, onto what’s coming up. The next two important Canterbury Branch events for us to get involved in are the Canterbury Branch Annual Rally on 21st and 22nd February, followed a week later on Sunday 1st March by the Annual Brooklands to Brighton Run for all vehicles 100 years or older. Notices for both of these events follow in the Hub, and are also on the club web page, but here’s some important additional information….
.
We have a Short Route for slower vehicles for the Saturday run which will start in Rangiora at No. 250 Coldstream Road (look for the VCC sign almost opposite the MainPower Arena) and travel to the lunch stop. The run distance is 27km, and it’s all on quiet back roads. You have the choice of driving from home to the start point there, or there’s plenty of room for trailers where we’re starting. You will need to be at the start point about 10.00am, so we can get the run underway at 10.30am sharp. This run will take us to the same finish destination as the Medium and Long routes in plenty of time for lunch. We will also finish back in Rangiora in the afternoon. On Sunday all the action then continues at Cutler Park as it does for everyone else.
All the details are on the notice on Page 16 in this Hub. One important bit of information I left out of the notice was the entry fee, which is $15.00. This is for the rally badge (mandatory for all entrants), with a small amount for incidental expenses. Entries now close on Friday 13th February. Don’t forget, it is for any club eligible vehicle that is 100 years or older, so if you have a club vehicle that is 1926 or earlier and you can get it roadworthy before 1st March, then we’d love you to be involved.
Details will be in the March Hub, but please note the date now. And don’t forget our very own Old Cars Bikes and Coffee (OCBC) mornings on the 3rd Sunday of every month at Cutler Park, and the Veteran Coffee mornings on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at Thirsty Acres, Kirwee, starting at 11.00am. All welcome!

Here we go another year of fun and adventures, the Festive Season is done and dusted so it and upwards and into what ever the New Year may bring us. The VOG’s have certainly got 2026 underway in fine style with a run on Tuesday January 13th and what a fabulous day it was too not too hot and not too windy. An interesting ride organised this time by our man Dave Robinson with backup duties this time undertaken by Ian Smith and his navigator Doug Parker. It’s been quite some time since we saw Ian so it was great that he could put his hand up and volunteer for this duty, always a most important job although this time all our little beauties behaved themselves. Doug also is a VOG member that we hadn’t seen for sometime he was in fact on our very first ride back in May 2015.

Our ride started from the Nga Puna Wai sports grounds in Aidenfield and headed off around the newer parts of Halswell and then onto Cashmere trying to keep out of the way of all that “scary” traffic that seems to snarl down on you whilst crossing busy roads and trying your best to keep as far left as possible without burying yourself in some of the large potholes that seem to accumulate where the bitumen runs out. It was quite a circuitous route taking us along a walking / biking track beside the Heathcote Stream. This track was an adventure in itself dodging mum’s with buggies, doggy walkers, and the many tree roots that push themselves to the surface along the way. Our leader Dave had an encounter with a couple of pedestrians along the way and came unstuck on a bend with a large tree root throwing him off balance and hence hitting the deck. Of course he was fined for this and
now holds the coveted cup for the month. Daves pride was hurt and his Solex stand buckled but he lives to tell the tale. He was told he should have attached “trainer wheels” to the bike.

Continuing on we eventually ended up in the Linden Grove subdivision doing a circuit of Mokihi Gardens and passing the Jeeves’ abode. Philip must have heard the throb of our machines passing as on our second passing he was standing at his lounge window waving in awe as we zoomed by heading to our lunch destination. Before getting lunch we had the challenge of crossing the Wigram Rd overbridge a great achievement for some of us as we didn’t have to pedal even though the Velosolex riders manual states “Some pedal assistance maybe required on hills” . Those that pedalled were still puffing quite a bit when we reached our lunch break at the Good Home Gastro Bar in Wigram Sky’s.
Another magic ride enjoyed by all.

Happy new year to you all.

Tony Becker has come to the rescue once again and will host the February run.Apart from Tony I have had no response to the email I sent out in early January asking for people to organise runs for the first part of this year so we still have no runs for March,April, May or June.
I can help with suggestions for possible destinations so if you have any ideas and a bit of spare time please get in touch.
The February run will start at Princess Margaret Hospital car park 9. 45 for a 10am start
See you there.
Ken.
I trust you all had a good break from the norm and change of scene across Christmas and New Year. I have to say that the summer weather has been a mixed bag! Aside from a few very nice days it was more akin to Spring and Autum all rolled in.
My Christmas was spent in Christchurch with the wider family travelling. New Years Eve was celebrated in Timaru at the civic fireworks display, Caroline Bay. This is the second time that I’ve attended this display, my first a few years ago. It is impressive and lasts for up to 15mins which frankly surprises me. It is worth a visit as it does ‘pack a bang’ or two (although I do appreciate that pets and their owners would find it disturbing).
On New Years Day we attended the Fairlie New Years Day Parade. A portion of the state highway was closed in Fairlie and traffic diverted for the procession of bag pipers, local clubs and associations to march the route. This was followed by and extensive drive by of cars, motorcycles, farm machinery and trucks of all ages and concluded with current businesses and enterprises. The event finished at the Fairlie Showgrounds where the vehicles were on display along with numerous market stalls. Many of the vehicles are located at the Fairlie Heritage Museum. It was so good to see the local and wider community supporting such an event. This reminded me of the English, London Lord Mayor’s Parade also on New Years Day. It’s a given that the Lord Mayor’s Parade is a much grander affair with much of the City of London’s traffic diverted away. The core objectives are very much the same a celebration of a place’s heritage, a sense of being through the ages and of course the all-important current day. It provides connections. I can’t not mention the addition at the Fairlie Parade of lollies being thrown from passing vehicles for the youngsters to pursue. I wasn’t one of the youngsters but it certainly provided added entertainment for the youngsters in our group!
The Historic Festival of Motoring is inching closer. I’m busy working through a small list of must dos in preparing the 24 Cadillac. I assume for those attending you are doing the same. Do look out for many of the club events mentioned in The Hub of which a few are listed below:-
- Club Night (1st Thursday) Noggin being 5th February
- OCBC Sunday 15th February
- The Annual Rally, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22 February
- Brooklands to Brighton, Sunday 1st March
See you motoring out and about.

Summer is here!! A bit moist this last month, but opportunities are still there for great summer ri ing!!

For the Future Events, things get a bit sketchy from mid January onwards, but at least you do get the idea of what is on into the future. There will be Event Reminders put out to advise of activities, so keep an eye out for those.
29th November – Motorcycle Annual Rally. 36 riders enjoyed the Motorcycle Annual Rally; the organised lunch stop at Terrace Station went off well. See elsewhere for a full write-up and results.
10th December – Noggin Night; Xmas Noggin. About 45 members and partners enjoyed this the final Noggin for the year. Meal was superb! Many thanks to those who provided salads etc. to compliment the ham etc.
17th December – Old Codger’s Run. Absolutely pissing down, so postponed until the next day, 18th. Coffee at Coffee Culture Beckenham, then a run through to the Tai Tapu pub for lunch… Looks like about a dozen were on the run.
2nd January 2026 – Motorcycle New Years Run. Met at Motorcycle Corner, then a run through to Methven for lunch at the Blue Pub. Light rain for most of the day… About 15 – 20 turned up for this.
14th January 2026 – Motorcycle Noggin. Just a quiet night at the Motorcycle shelter for a couple and a chin wag…
21st January 2026 – Old Codger’s Run. Met at The Gatehouse Café, then a run via Fernside to Cust to sample the fare at the newly renovated Cust Hotel… Well, only 8 intrepid motorcyclists did, but there were a few extras who joined up for the coffee, but went elsewhere afterwards… Quite a damp day (read “pissing down…”)– especially near Templeton, but it did dry out as the ride went over the Waimak River… We were going to go via Waimak Gorge but the bridge was closed for resurfacing; would
have been pretty wet up there, too!….
31st January 2026 – Fish & Chip Run. Meet at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) at 10.15am, leave 10.30 am for a ride to Diamond Harbour for a garage raid…
11th February 2026, Motorcycle Noggin. Meet at the Bridge Hotel in Prebbleton for an interesting garage raid nearby. Meet at 7.15pm for instructions and the address.
18th February – Old Codger’s Run. Look out for the Event Reminder for details…
28th February – Fish & Chip Run. Start at PMH then head off to towards Governor’s Bay then round to Evans Pass to finish at New Brighton. This is to view the Brooklands to Brighton 100 year old VCC vehicle run. The New Brighton Working Mens Club is opening up for the Brooklands – Brighton entrants.
11th March – Motorcycle Noggin. To be confirmed, but we are negotiating to visit a new museum being put together to honour a famous son of Christchurch… More details later…
15th – 22nd March – Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring, Nelson.
18th March – Old Codger’s Run. Look out for the Event Reminder for details…
28th March – Fish & Chip Run. We are looking at a North Canterbury destination, to be confirmed next month.
10 – 12th April 2026, Jim Toohey Run. Just a heads up, this run will be over the Lewis Pass to Muchison then onto Ross on the West Coast. Bookings have been made for accommodation; look out for the details etc. in the New Year. Entry forms will be elsewhere in the Hub, plus will be on line, so get those entries in now!! Entry forms in March Hub as well.
There are quite a few gaps in the above, until a committee meeting is held to decide on the format for the events then a notice will be put out to all via the email event reminders.
Cheers, CML

Greetings all,
Happy new year to you all and I hope you had a great Christmas and new year period. I have literally been right around the world since the last report. We left NZ on December 7th to fly to a very wet Vancouver. It’s known as “Raincouver they’re not wrong! We had a couple of days on buses and trains and did lots of walking. We hired a car for two days and drove up to Whistler on the sea to sky highway. It started out as the only “dry” day but rained heavily later. Beautiful drive but not easy coming home in the dark, pouring rain and driving on the wrong side of the road! Our last day back in Vancouver was so wet not even the beavers made an appearance while were out looking for wildlife. Granville market was the only solution was it was indoors! Next stop was London where we stated a few days with our relatives who aren’t far from Heathrow and Windsor. We then had a couple of nights in a London Hotel. Nice to see the Christmas lights in the big city where it’s dark around 3:30pm in the afternoon and you can really see them glow! We walked the streets of London taking in Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Leicester Sq, Oxford Street, Harrods, buses and the tube. We went to see Moulin Rouge at the theatre in Piccadilly which was amazing! Our last day was a bus ride to the houses of parliament, then a ride up the Thames to Borough market which was heaving with people! Our flight on from there to Guernsey was a bit of a fairground ride but we landed safely in gale force winds with plenty of shrieking from the passengers. We stayed in a friend’s house for the next 18 days who were away for the whole winter, so we had a very nice house to ourselves. We also had the full use of their car which was a new Honda N van 660cc Turbo. Nice and narrow for the Guernsey lanes but was a bit teeny compared to my usual drive. They had two dogs we were taking care of, and they required a lot of walks. This got us out and about – even on some very chilly days to quite a few different beaches depending on the wind direction. We managed a trip out on my brother in-law’s boat to Herm on the only still day. Windy it was – but no frosts – just freezing arctic winds from

the north. It’s still beautiful though, just not as busy as it is in summer. Christmas and New Year was a great time with the family, and we caught up with lots of friends and other relatives there. I met a local there who had a beautiful collection of older vehicles –his oldest being a rather lovely and well used 1928 Bugatti 3litre straight 8 boat tail. After leaving Guernsey we went back to England and visited the Cotswolds, Jeremy Clarkson’s pub and shop and the Mini assembly plant at Cowley in Oxford. Amazing to see how Mini’s are built. They only build the 3 door, 5 door and convertible there. Was surprised me was that they build them in the order they are ordered in so it was surprising to see different colours, doors and individual choices moving down the assembly line. Singapore was our stopover on the way home to warm up again. The Airbus A380 from London to Singapore had to be my favourite flight – so smooth and much quieter that the other jets we flew on. We arrived home on 12th January and now and back to work.

An older Roller in London and the 1928 Bugatti in Guernsey.

Our Honda N Van, Andre’s Citroen Ami and a Fiat 500 for scale (banana would have been too small!)
One of our relatives in Guernsey drives a Citroen Ami. It’s a 2 seater EV, top speed of 28 MPH and does about 46 miles on a single charge. It’s body is made of plastic and the doors are iden-
tical. The driver door is hinged on the front and the passenger door on the rear. The front and rear panels are the same – the front has white lights and the rear has red. They only come in LHD and the passenger seat is beside but well aft of the driver. It’s quite odd really but great to get around the Guernsey lanes! Guernsey lanes – it’s a two-way road!

The December Commercial noggin was supposed to be a BBQ at Tony and Leigh Craythorne’s – but I did hear they had to make a change in plans due to the weather. Henry has asked me to make a special mention of thanks and for the yummy scones. Thank you, Leigh and Tony, for hosting!
The January noggin was held in Henry Little’s garage. It was hammering down with rain a lot of the night which was loud on the tin roof. Wasn’t cold though and it was good to see Henry’s project he is working on. Good turnout of the usual members. Thanks, Henry, for hosting.
The February Commercial Noggin is to be held at a private collection of motoring memorabilia – Terry Dalton, Stonecastle, 142 Kerrs Road in Burnham. Parking up the drive. Please arrive between 7pm and 7:30 – not before. I hear it an impressive collection. Our previous arrangement has had to be postponed to another time as our host was unavailable.
The Annual Commercial Rally on 31st January will have been run by the time this edition of the Hub is published. More on that next month.
I have a few Noggin options for other places coming up when it’s
lighter in the evening, but Winter proves to be a struggle for options. If any club member has a venue or suggestion, please let me know.
The March commercial noggin is scheduled during the same week as the Vero rally in Nelson so some of our members won’t be there – but there are several who won’t be. If you would like to host the group please let me know.
See you out on the road,
Michael
