SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVALS Suffolk is gearing up for a wonderful summer of music so let’s hope the weather plays along too!

SATURDAY 1 JUNE

Entries are now open for a popular Dragon Boat Race which is taking place in Ipswich for the second year running. The event will see brightlycoloured dragon boats compete on the Ipswich Waterfront on Saturday 1st June 2019. The 200m race is in support of Fresh Start – new beginnings (FSNB), an Ipswich-based charity that works with children who have been sexually abused.

The race provides an opportunity for people to try out rowing and have fun on the Wet Dock with friends or colleagues this summer. With only 28 boats available, team spaces for the

racing are expected to go quickly and are available on a first-come first-served basis. To enter the race, participants will need to register as a team of eleven (including a drummer) and pay a £30 registration fee per person. As the race is in aid of a good cause, the dragon boat racers will be challenged to raise £50 each for charity.

Spectators will be able to enjoy the race from Ipswich Waterfront, where fun activities for children including colouring competitions and face painting will also be available at the Dragon Boat Festival.

he SUFFOLK SHOW at Trinity Park, Ipswich on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th May, is set to be bigger and better than ever. 2019 promises lots of new attractions for visitors to explore at the Show, including a new ‘Real Life Superheroes’ area which will recognise the fantastic work of our county’s paramedics, air ambulance, fire service and lifeboat crews.

In the Grand Ring, crowds will be wowed by a daredevil youth stunt show from the Imps Motorcycle Display Team and the Red Devils parachute display team.

Tickets are now on sale at the same price as last year. Advanced tickets cost £23 (saving £5 per ticket) while children aged under 15 will once again receive free entry. For more information and to book tickets visit www.suffolkshow.co.uk.

RED ROOSTER at Euston Hall Embracing the sounds and lifestyle of the American Deep South, Red Rooster aims to become the event for fans of Rhythm and Blues, Americana, Soul, Roots and Country music.

A number of acts have been confirmed, including Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets and The Budos Band.

LATITUDE at Henham Park Latitude Festival is back for its 14th Edition and it’s packed with acts that promise to be more diverse, creative and comprehensive than ever before. Headlining Friday, George Ezra; Saturday, Snow Patrol; Sunday, Lana Del Ray.

16-18 AUGUST

FOLK EAST at Glemham Hall Growing in stature every year, FolkEast is back for the eighth time, proving why it is nothing like other music festivals. And it will be packing a punch with an impressive line-up – seven acts have been announced so far, including Richard Thompson, Cara Dillon and Karine Polwart with more to follow!

WEEKEND 21-23 JUNE IPSWICH JAZZ FESTIVAL 2019 A stunning line-up of jazz music has been announced for the fourth Ipswich Jazz Festival to be held over the weekend of 21st-23rd June in 2019.

Kicking off with a party, the Brass Funkeys bring their lively mix of funk, gypsy jazz and marching music on the evening of Friday 21st June.

The afternoon of Saturday 22nd June sees a free family jazz show by singer Becki Biggins, for children and their families, and a performance by Cliff Lane Primary School’s orchestra.

That evening, the club-style Stars at St Peter’s features Suffolk’s international singer Polly Gibbons, top saxophonist Alan Barnes and young-upand coming jazz violinist Ben Holder along with acclaimed trumpet player Neil Yates, ably supported by the local Chris Ingham Trio.

On Sunday 23rd June, there’s a free Brazilian jazz concert

by Samba Azul at St Peter’s followed by an evening gig by dark jazz trio Mammal Hands who have been hard at work touring internationally.

SAVE OUR HEDGEHOGS

From reader Jean Leggett: “Last year I discovered a mother hedgehog nursing three tiny pink hoglets under some rolled up membrane in my garden. I contacted Suffolk Wildlife Trust (SWT), and with their advice my hedgehog family thrived.

Since then I have been shocked to discover that during my own lifetime, hedgehogs have decreased in population from 30 million to an estimated one million.

These garden friendly mammals desperately need our help.

How? They need gaps, holes or trenches between gardens for IPSWICH MUSIC DAY

them to forage for food and water.

Provide shallow dishes of water, dog or cat food (not fish varieties and never milk). Place ramps in ponds so they can climb out. Stop using slug pellets and pesticides which can be fatal for hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs sleep during the day, foraging for food late evening through to early morning. If concerned, place the hedgehog in a box and call SWT for advice.

If the hedgehog has babies they won’t survive long without her.

HOW IT WAS SOLVED: When I was appointed Lasting Power of Attorney, I received some paperwork, including a letter from Ann-Marie Matthews at Barker Gotelee. I remember Dad being impressed with the service and gave Ann-Marie a call. Despite it being over a year ago, she remembered Dad, which was lovely.

Over a coffee, I confided my concerns to Ann-Marie. As well as managing Mum’s bills, I was keen to provide her with some extra support around the home, which I’d need her money to pay for. Talking about it was upsetting, but Ann-Marie reassured me I was doing the right thing.

During the meeting, I learned that Mum and Dad had put in place Lasting Power of Attorney, not only for their financial affairs, but for their health and welfare too. This meant that I’d be able to make decisions over Mum’s future medical care, which was very reassuring.

ITH REGARDS to the finances, the first step was to send certified copies of my Lasting Power of Attorney status to each of the third parties that Mum was involved with. This included the energy firms, insurance companies and the council. Of course, it was also necessary for me to inform the bank. AnnMarie is incredibly experienced in handling these matters and, as I have my own family and a full time job to juggle, it was

such a relief when she said she could manage it all for me.

Instantly, I felt the burden lift.

Ann-Marie was so helpful and understanding. I soon received the relevant documentation advising me of my Attorney status. Consequently, it’s now really easy to manage things on Mum’s behalf. Her cash is completely separate to mine, with its own bank card. I set up regular payments for things that benefit her. For example, she has a lady pop in every day with groceries, who has since become a firm friend.

As part of the process, Ann-Marie also carried out a thorough benefits check. I was pleased to learn that Mum

qualified for an Attendance Allowance – a tax-free sum to benefit Mum’s welfare. As her Attorney, I was legally able to collect the allowance and spend it on a dog walker. Mum was over the moon, admitting that she was struggling to walk far.

E ARE approaching the end of the Tax Year, and although many people understand that they have an Individual Savings Allowance (ISA) limit of £20,000 per person, many are unaware that there is a Junior ISA Allowance as well. The JISA allowance for the 2018/2019 tax year is £4,260.

Putting money aside for children or grandchildren is something many people wish to do, perhaps saving to meet some of the costs of higher education and limiting the level of debt their children start their working lives with. AS I HAVE GOT OLDER IT SEEMS AS IF MY LASHES AND BROWS HAVE BECOME SPARSE. WHAT CAN I DO? You’re right the older we get the more sparse and finer our hair becomes. This won’t have been helped by years of using mascara.

A single coat of conditioner before applying mascara or brow pencil will help to strengthen, lengthen and thicken lashes and brows. The lash conditioner will also give you more of a dramatic look. Semipermanent eyebrow tattooing could be a great alternative to fill in the spare areas, as well as eyelash extensions which will add extra length and thickness to lashes.

THE DOCTOR HAS SAID I HAVE ACNE ROSACEA, IT’S SORE AND LOOKS HORRIBLE. I WANT TO COVER IT UP BUT I’M NOT SURE WHAT TO USE. It’s worth either going back to see your doctor or seeing a nutritionist because there are lots of foods types that will help calm and sooth, equally there will be food types that will irritate the condition... i.e. spicy foods and alcohol may trigger flare ups. Other triggers are the environment, lifestyle, stress and cosmetics. To help with covering up acne rosacea, you are best off using all mineral make-up, as this will allow your skin to breath and won’t irritate your rosacea. I would also advise a consultation with a professional skin therapist to

advise you on products you should be using and also what to avoid.

MY NAILS FLAKE AT THE END AND WILL NOT GROW? This is a common nail condition called onychoschisis. It is often caused by having hands that are constantly wet, frequent use and removal of nail polish or artificial nails, and continuous mild trauma to the nail plate. We suggest you book regular manicures to keep on top of the problem. Have you considered trying gelish on your nails? The polish will last you 2-3 weeks without chipping or peeling, and will in actual fact help your natural nails underneath to grow and become stronger.

I WOULD LOVE TO TRY CONTOURING. WHAT WOULD I NEED AND WHAT TIPS CAN YOU SUGGEST? When contouring there are 2 different methods, using liquids or powders. If you’re contouring for the first time I would use powders as they are a lot easier to work with and really easy to blend!

Applying the contour using a tapered brush (or a normal blusher brush) where shadows normally fall on the face e.g. under the cheek bones to excentuate them. It’s important to contour the whole face so use the product right into your hair line and behind the ears.

I like to think of it as the number 3 drawn around the side of your face.

Highlight tops of cheekbones, bridge of nose, cupids bow, brow bone – basically anywhere you want to enhance. You can apply highlight with an oval blender brush but I tend to use my fingers as I find it easier to work with. Just remember to blend, blend, blend and you can’t go wrong. n Vanilla March/April 2019

One of my favourite ways to look polished with minimal effort is the low bun. Just brush your hair into a low ponytail and gently circle the ends, securing with grips.

The key to making it modern and cool is to keep it a little undone and messy by using a texture spray. My favourite is Goldwell Kerasilk Texturizing Finishing Spray (£22). You could even dress up a bun with hair accessories. At London Fashion Week, diamante barrettes were spotted all over the catwalk. If bling isn’t your thing, you could keep it classic with a tortoiseshell hair slide.

Dr Rachel Tallent is an Ipswich GP and owner of cosmetic clinic Tallent Medical, specialising in antiwrinkle injections (Botox), dermal fillers, and chemical peels.

“A friend of mine had a filler procedure elsewhere and they really weren’t impressed with the results,” she explains. “I knew I could offer something much more professional, so six years ago I decided to train alongside my GP work and open a clinic.

They met through the hair industry in 1990 and have worked together ever since.

Well-known for their flamboyant style and infectious personalities, they had their own successful salon business in Ipswich for many years, before moving to Marbella, Spain for what was a new life adventure.

Now though we are pleased to say they are back and for the last three years they have once again been establishing themselves as respected hairdressers in our lovely town centre.

What do you love most about hairdressing that keeps you wanting more?

G&P: We love interacting with people and of course changing their appearance and how they feel about themselves. The power of a good hair style is not to be underestimated or undervalued – whether it’s an instant restyle or a long term hair goal that takes time to achieve. For us, it’s just as important to tailor our work to each individual and let us help you pull that look off. It’s an extremely satisfying feeling and that’s what keeps us wanting more.

How has the industry changed since you first started your careers in hairdressing?

G&P: Well today there are far more opportunities for people in the industry than before, you only have to look at how many salons grace the streets of Ipswich to see that. People’s expectations have gone up, and quite rightly so, because only the best is good enough. From a fashion point of view, looks come round full circle so it’s hard to come up with something totally original nowadays but it’s important to take these fashions and styles and put your own twist on them, provided that it will suit.

You spent 15 years in Marbella, what was that like?

G&P: Working in Marbella was amazing, and we made some great friends. People there are extremely fashion conscious and they view hairdressing as it should be viewed, which is as an art form. Age is irrelevant, if you love a look and it suits, then you have it. We will always look back on our time there with fond memories but we are glad to be back in what we call our home town once again... well as long as we have a nice warm Summer again like last year!

What keeps you both motivated?

G&P: We love keeping up with latest trends and we are always prepared to learn something new. Frankly, we both have a love affair with this industry along with pride and passion in our work.

Finally could you leave us with your trend report for spring/summer 2019 G&P: We would love to! This year curls need to be brushed out to give a softer and fuller look which works well on short or long hair.

Partings are placed lower on more technical haircuts, such as the strong geometric shapes.

Colour wise, this Spring should see ladies switching to cooler/ metallic tones of brunette with hues of pale ash. The Summer always sees a push for that true blonde, but ladies don’t be scared to keep hold of that root shadow. Make sure your blonde is toned to whatever suits you best – whether it be the shine of a warm golden glow or the raw ‘beached out’ look from a pale blonde. It all comes down to eye colour and skin tone, so if you’re not sure try holding some gold (warm) or silver (pale) card near your skin and eyes to see which suits you the best.

7 GARDEN CRIMES TO AVOID THIS SPRING

Crimes you could be committing in your backyard and how to avoid them!

1. THEFT Keeping and eating windfallen fruit, that are blow into your garden, or stocking up on leaves, twigs and branches from neighbours’ trees, could be considered theft – as they constitute someone else’s property that you intend to permanently deprive them of. It’s a good idea to seek permission before retaining items that are technically possessions of another gardener.

2. FLY TIPPING Don’t just throw twigs or trimmings straight back over the garden fence though, as this could be viewed as garden waste fly tipping!

Even scooping up cat droppings which you suspect to belong to a neighbour’s pet and tossing them back to where you think they belong could be interpreted as illegal disposal of waste!

3. TRESPASS Leaning into a neighbours garden to trim overhanging trees or plants – or for any other purpose – could be interpreted as trespassing, even if there are no physical barriers to cross. Green-fingered Brits should only take their shears up to the

Sutton Hoo Spring and Summer Roast SERVES 6

1 whole free-range Sutton Hoo chicken 1 whole lemon, halved 1 bulb garlic, halved 2 sprigs Rosemary 2 sprigs lemon thyme 400g new potatoes, boiled 2-3 courgettes 250 ml white wine 175 g softened butter 150g olive oil If you’re planning an extra special Easter Sunday lunch with family and friends, look no further than Sutton Hoo Chicken's Whole Chicken for a meal to remember.

Succulent, delicious and juicy, Sutton Hoo Chicken's Whole Chicken is the ultimate roast dinner choice.

Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas mark 8.

Smear 100g butter over the chicken and season well inside and out. Place the rosemary, half the bulb of garlic and half a lemon inside the cavity of the chicken. Place the chicken into a deep roasting tray.

2 Pour over about 100g olive oil and then add the wine into the roasting tray. Place in the oven for 10 mins then turn the heat down to 180°C. 3 Roast for 45 mins per kg, carefully remove from the oven and baste the chicken with its own juices. Return to the oven for a final 10 minutes.

4 Remove from the oven and leave in a warm place to rest for 15 minutes. Cover loosely with foil. Add the boiled new potatoes to the roasting dish.

5 Place a frying pan on a medium heat and pour in the remaining oil and butter. As the pan begins to smoke, throw in the cut courgettes, lightly season and fry for 2-3 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.

6 Put the potatoes into the same pan, put it back onto heat, throw in the thyme and squeeze the juice from the half lemon and fry for a couple of minutes.

S THERE a friendlier pub in Christendom than the Fountain at Tuddenham St Martin? This lovely old inn on the north side of Ipswich is bursting with bonhomie and the warmest of welcomes. It’s a traditional oldfashioned village pub, opening its doors and its arms to visitors to come in to enjoy a really good spread of perfected pub classics

and hearty clever cooking.

The Fountain’s motto is ‘Where Friends Meet and Eat’ – and the smiling staff certainly make each new arrival in the timber beamed dining rooms feel instantly at home, relaxed and amongst friends.

The Fountain is an instant mood-lifter. Lush gin and tonics are as delightful as you’d expect from a deep Adnams Copper House Raspberry gin garnished with strawberries. Fresh warm bread served to the table was accompanied by tiny pats of seasoned butter.

Starters are lovely – pan-fried pigeon breast with roasted carrot, parsnip crisp and carrot puree was deliciously light but flavoursome, a salmon and cod gratin with a cheddar cheese crust was

oozing with savour warmth. The starter menu also includes inventive plates like crab tagliatelle, chilli, ginger, spring onion and coriander or Goan potato and spinach samosas, mango chutney, alongside specials such as a white onion soup, and can also be served as a light main. Set menu starters include smoked trout, potato and bacon salad or crushed avocado bruschetta with poached egg, again available as light mains.

grilled fillet of beef, with a prawn skewer, dauphinoise potatoes, bernaise sauce and seasonal vegetables, proud, substantial and perfectly executed. Other specials included baked seabass stuffed with orange and fennel, or grilled skrel cod, with a prawn, chorizo and bean stew, tapenade and vegetable medley. Menu staples, included the sumptuous richly slowly roasted belly pork, also on a thick slab of gorgeous dauphinoise potatoes, was accompanied by lushly shiny cabbage and bacon and an awesome gravy, alongside choices such as roast guinea fowl breast stuffed with apple & hazelnut, roast root vegetables and new potatoes, or chargrilled calves liver, smoked bacon, black pudding, mashed March/April 2019 Vanilla

potatoes, seasonal vegetables or sweet potato, spinach and ricotta lasagne, leaf salad.

These clever dishes compete for attention alongside well worked pub classics, cod and chips (obviously Adnams-beerbattered) or big juicy steaks, high stacking burgers or a roast chicken breast, served here with red wine jus, colcannon potatoes and a vegetable medley.

The desserts are as delicious.

The signature dish is their baked dark chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream – as sweet as it is picture perfect. The baked vanilla cheesecake with poached rhubarb, jelly and brandy snap was a great show of immaculate chef-skills and a delightful mix of fresh flavours. Also on the list, the treacle tart with honey and

ginger ice cream sounds fantastic, or for lighter ends to the meal, try the affrogato with real vanilla ice cream and double espresso, or a Baileys tiramisu.

HE FOUNTAIN is for friends and food and the two combine here effortlessly. This busy bustling pub accepts group bookings without the pain of pre-ordering, warmly welcomes families and all ages as well as dogs, rightfully popular for its excellent service, affable welcome and great Suffolk food.

In a word, yes – in a positive way! The peace and quiet took some getting used to, but I have grown to love Suffolk, especially the seaside town of Felixstowe where both my children have grown up. Suffolk’s location and easy access to other great places including London and Aldeburgh are real advantages.

St Joseph’s is well known for its Rugby Festival, but that’s only one thing. What is the College really like?

The College is like a home, with

a real family feel. The students never cease to amaze me, with their talent, excellent manners and joie de vivre! Our staff are completely dedicated to ensuring a broad, balanced and stimulating experience for all.

We are delighted with our academic achievement and in particular our progress at A-level: we have been ranked second in Suffolk and in the top 5% nationally this year.

Every day is different at St Jo’s, packed with opportunities for our students. We are renowned for our rugby, but we perform well in a range of other sports, not least in netball, girls’ cricket, table tennis and equestrian events. When you entered teaching did you have any idea you would become principal of an independent school?

I started my career as a teacher of French and German, which I loved and had no notion of becoming a principal at that point. However, as I took on more responsibility, initially as a Head of Languages and then Assistant Headteacher, the idea of becoming a principal really grew on me. I am very lucky – not just with the position I hold, but where I hold it and the students and staff whom I work alongside daily.

Do you consider yourself a true Suffolk girl now or is your heart still in the north?

I think a true Suffolk girl, although whilst I will always back ITFC, I remain loyal to LFC! You must be very busy; what do you do to relax?

I enjoy time with my family and friends, visiting local restaurants, the cinema, musicals in London, walks on the sea front in Felixstowe. I will read anything and everything and love a wide range of music. I am looking forward to seeing Ed Sheeran in Chantry Park in August. ■
