ith autumn now mere weeks away, the high street is reflecting the trends that emerged from the shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris back in February and March. There are plenty of trends to choose from: take classic capes and heritage checks for some seasonal starters, then head through to silky slips and dainty shoes, and even a new way to tie your scarf. Here’s my top four trends for AW19: CHECKS & TARTAN

Not groundbreaking for an autumn winter season, but always welcome, and there's more than ever around this season. Even the master of heritage checks – Burberry – have mixed it up a bit with some gridlike designs .

This Autumn the signature colour is teal! Teal is actually one of four shades acknowledged to be universally flattering, along with red, aubergine, and blush. So who looks best in teal? You do! Teal pairs beautifully with browns, grey and black. It’s rich yet vibrant, classy yet soulful. Try it with coral, as well as white or denim.

hey say if you keep clothes long enough they will eventually come back into fashion, but does the same apply to eyewear? Well it turns out that it does and in fact Retro eyewear is storming the eyewear fashion houses of Europe. Large bright plastic frames echoing the 80s, bright metals from the 70s and upswepts from the 60s. One of our favourite ranges is from Oliver Goldsmith, who are probably the oldest and most well-known of the British fashion frame companies. Worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Princess Grace of Monaco, Peter Sellers and Michael Caine. Now available in their Original and Genuine collections – classic styles in modern materials, the

perfect classy match. When we started stocking the brighter Retro metals which were originally designed for the guys, we were amazed at how good they look on the gals... aviators in particular. Upswepts however, work just for the ladies, some sweeping and really catseye-like, others more gentle and subtle. One really big difference between the earlier years and today is modern lens materials and designs. Sadly in days gone by, if you had a higher prescription bigger specs were a no- go area. Today with advanced materials and lens designs a whole new world is available for those with higher prescriptions. We’ve said in previous articles that we love people popping into play with the different styles and we are just as happy telling them about new lens designs. Great eyewear is our passion, please do come and share it with us!

STYLE NOTES AW19

Check blazer £32.99 trousers £22.99 New Look

by Pam Davis

W

ith autumn now mere weeks away, the high street is reflecting the trends that emerged from the shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris back in February and March.

BAGGY TROUSERS

Ideally worn with a chunky platform shoe to allow the fabric to bunch around the ankles, worn high over the hip, these slouchy slacks came in heavy tailored fabrics and neutral colours. Pockets essential. GOTHIC FLORALS

A new jewel in the crown Sonkai moves to the Royal Arcade

The Royal Arcade is the jewel in Norwich’s crown; a beautiful example of Victorian ornate architecture. The businesses who trade there are a cut above, and we are delighted to report that this autumn there will be a new addition, Sonkai, who make fabulous bespoke contemporary handmade jewellery. Sonkai have been in Norwich for 14 years, so they are already an established name in the city, but owners Sara Sweet and her partner Craig Snape wanted to be in the Royal Arcade since the start, so when space became available they jumped at the chance. “The Royal Arcade is a beautiful place to be in and it really is an honour to be in the city’s prime spot and part of such a lovely community. We will be doing exactly the same thing – part working design studio and workshop, part boutique shop – in which we are only looking to sell our own jewellery, made in-house, hence putting the other jewellery ranges on sale until we move. We are very excited and have October/November 2019 Vanilla

everything crossed until we have the new lease.” “Craig is probably the most highly skilled and experienced goldsmith in the city. We believe this is what makes us unique, because our quality of jewellery design and making is second to none,” says Sara. “Our style is contemporary, elegant and timeless and we take on commissions many others would find impossible. Craig is incredibly skilled at working with unusual stones, and challenging metals and designs, and this really gives us the edge in terms of originality and pushing the barriers of jewellery design. We also remodel antique jewellery to make it more to the wearer’s taste. The two talented designers, Mallory and Susan, use specialist

CAD software to create stunning and accurate bespoke designs. Another feather is Sonkai’s cap was winning the commission to create the new civic chain for the Sheriff of Norwich in 2016. The new Sheriff has commissioned Sonkai to design a piece for her, using motifs and details from the existing one. “It’s very exiting that our design is being continued in this way,” says Sara. “It’s a great piece of history.” So a new era beckons for Sonkai, in one of the most distinguished areas of the city. “We are looking forward to being in our new home, Craig will be working in the shop window, so everyone can see his skill and creative magic first hand.” ■ www.sonkai.co.uk

“Study the auction pack carefully and ask yourself: is there anything that stands out immediately which could deter you from proceeding?”

Buying a property at auction: Think before you bid MY QUESTION: My partner and I are looking to buy a property at auction and have found one we’re very interested in. We know very little about buying a house in this way and feel unsure as to whether it is a sensible idea, or something best avoided. Are you able to offer any advice?

40

B

uying a property at auction can be an exciting prospect but it is really important to do your homework before entering the auction room. One advantage of purchasing property at auction is that the process is usually quicker than a standard purchase. If your bid is successful, the deposit is paid (usually 10% of the purchase price) and completion then typically takes place within 28 days. Another attraction is that

often people find they are able to purchase property at a price below the open market value. On the other hand, you need to consider why the property has been placed into the auction, rather than on the open market and the following are some of the more common reasons: • The property has been repossessed • The property is in need of substantial repair • The seller requires a quick sale Once you have identified the property you are interested in, Vanilla October/November 2019

REAL LIVES there are a number of important factors that you will need to carefully consider: AUCTION PACK

Contact the Auctioneer to request the auction pack. These are usually available at least two weeks before the auction. The quality of auction packs can vary but ideally they should include: the title to the property; a plan of the property; standard searches; auction special conditions of sale; replies to standard enquiries; contract and form of transfer, together with any ancillary documents relating to the property, such as relevant planning permissions. Study the auction pack carefully and ask yourself: is there anything that stands out immediately which could deter you from proceeding? INSTRUCT YOUR LEGAL ADVISOR

It is a good idea to contact your solicitor as soon as possible, so that they can review the pack and report to you in good time before the auction, this will then allow time to investigate anything unusual or onerous which may affect your decision to proceed.

undertaken at the property, then it may be prudent to also have a builder view the property to advise you as to the likely cost of any essential works. INITIAL BUDGET

You will need to consider an initial budget to cover the preliminary costs of going to auction. There are a number of initial costs that you will be responsible for before you have necessarily even placed a bid. These include surveyor’s fees, mortgage application fees and solicitor’s fees. You will need to be prepared for the fact that although you may incur these costs at the outset, you may not necessarily be the successful bidder on the day of the auction.

FINANCING THE PURCHASE

Consider how you will finance the deposit and purchase. Usually a deposit will be payable upon the acceptance of a successful bid at the auction (10% of the purchase price). The balance is then payable on completion, which is usually 28 days after exchange of contracts. This means that time is of the essence, so if you are funding the purchase by way of a mortgage, you need to ensure that you have a mortgage in principle before attending the auction. The mortgage advance will need to be available in time for completion, or you could face financial penalties. n

We are here to help... For further advice on conveyancing, please contact the Real Estate team at realestate@steeleslaw.co.uk or 01603 598000. Our specialist Lorraine Olpin is on hand to help.

INSPECTION

It is important to inspect the property thoroughly prior to the auction. Ideally, you should do this with a surveyor who can advise you of the state and condition of the property and any structural defects. Many properties are sold at auction because they are in a poor state of repair. If you are aware at the outset that work will need to be October/November 2019 Vanilla

A ‘golden’ time for Unthank Road

A

‘Vibrant, funky, quirky...’ it's a cool place to be in Norwich!

S ANY Norwich local knows, Unthank Road is in the heart of the city’s popular Golden Triangle; a wedgeshaped area within the south western suburbs of the city, where house prices continue to rise and there is a unique ‘chic meets boho’ style that’s so compelling. Taking its name from the family who owned a large estate there in the 19th century, Unthank Road forms the backbone and main shopping area of the Golden Triangle, and its numerous terraced houses are home to professionals, families and students from the nearby University of East Anglia. The overall feel is vibrant, funky and quirky, and its friendly atmosphere means that if you’re visiting Norwich it really is a must-do on your itinerary. According to residents, Unthank Road has a real buzz about it and in terms of the shops, October/November 2019 Vanilla

cafés, restaurants and businesses it has become a ‘cool’ place to be and has a varied and mixed demographic. It’s safe too, surrounded by great schools, such as Town Close and Norwich High School for Girls, and open spaces like Eaton Park. It feels like living in a village, with the most appealing aspects of city life. The community feel is palpable, and that’s what makes it such a great place to hang out.

L

UCY CARNE, from Reality estate agents, says: “I have been an estate agent in Norwich for 25 years, and this area has always retained its premium. Unthank Road really does have a village community feel, with lovely independent cafes and shops, but it’s also a short walk into the city, so it’s the perfect location. “People will always love the Victorian terraces, because they

have so much character, and the mix of people who live in them is very broad; a few students, families and professionals, some renting, some owning. There is always lots going on here and Unthank Road has a personality that draws people in.” Many of the businesses on Unthank Road are well worth a visit. Norwich is becoming a hotbed of gastronomic excellence, and here you will find some of the finest places to eat and drink. If you want the best Sunday roast, take a trip to the Pear Tree Inn, a traditional ‘village’ pub where you will get the warmest welcome, a real fire, great ales and fantastic home-cooked food that will satisfy even the heartiest appetite! Lesley Pears, who owns and runs the pub with her husband Nick, says: “We’ve been here a year and we chose Unthank Road because it’s a lovely community with a diverse culture. There is

great footfall from the city, so we get a lot of tourists, plus of course our many regulars.” Relaxed dining is all the rage, and at Blue Joanna you will find a down-to-earth experience of Asian-inspired, tapas style street eats, plus beer, cocktails, vinyl records, live music and a blue piano! You must try their Korean Blue Taco: 2 soft blue corn tortillas, Asian slaw, sriracha lime dressing, pickled cucumber, fresh tomato salsa. Out of this world! Owner Ecky Limon says: “We opened four years ago, and Unthank Road is the perfect location for our relaxed and intimate style of dining. We are

busy every night and we have a very broad appeal, from students to professionals. It’s a great time to be in the area and there is a unique vibe on Unthank Toad, it’s like a village community.” Probably East Anglia’s bestknow brewery, Adnams, has a store on Unthank Road, stocking a wide range of products. Why not pop by for one of their free daily in-store tastings, or some great advice on wine selection? A longstanding feature on Unthank Road, The Annex started 20 yeas ago and has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative bespoke kitchen designers in the area. They are

just one example of the many successful businesses that cater for interiors and homewares for the affluent, as the gentrification of the area continues. And there’s more to see; while you’re in the area, take a look at the imposing Catholic Cathedral of St John the Baptist at the top of Unthank Road – grandeur and magnificent architecture at its very best. Just around the corner you’ll find one of Norwich’s hidden gems, the beautiful and tranquil Plantation Gardens. Unthank Road caters for your every need. No wonder people make a beeline for this cultural haven. See you there! n

THINK GIRL SCOUT… Is your 4x4 winter-ready?

I

T’S NOT BEEN a bad summer, but winter is just around the corner… and we all know how challenging our English weather can be! More and more women are driving 4x4 vehicles to help them safely navigate the rural roads of Norfolk – often in wet, muddy and icy conditions – and to meet the needs of their busy lives. Ensuring your 4x4 is winterready is key, and no-one knows this better than Steve Fisher, MD of JSF 4x4, one of the region’s top Range Rover and Land Rover repair and service specialists. “Many of our customers are women and have been coming to us for years,” says Steve. “Keeping your 4x4 in top condition is a huge part of our job here, but there are some basic things you can do yourself to ensure your vehicle is ready when the cold weather sets in. “Firstly, check your wiper blades are in good condition

October/November 2019 Vanilla

and not split. Make sure your headlights are all working and correctly aligned so you don’t blind oncoming traffic. You will soon know if that’s happening, and we can make those tweaks for you here. It’s mandatory to carry spare bulbs if you’re travelling abroad. “Having the right emergency kit in the car is a must: warning triangle, snow shovel, warm blanket and water. Think Girl Scout and be prepared! Tyres are vital for winter vehicle safety, so check the pressure is correct. Even better, go on to winter tyres, which give better grip in ice and snow and also disperse water and mud in wet conditions. “Use a good winter strength antifreeze in your radiator, one that works down to minus 20. A cracked radiator is not good news! The windscreen washers need to be working well

in cold weather, so use an all season screen wash fluid so your washer jets don’t freeze up. “Most modern vehicles will tell you when the oil is low, but if not check the dipstick to see if you need a top up. With all this in place you should be good to go when the cold snap arrives, and it’s so much better to be safe than sorry.” But for the more technical side of vehicle care, such as repairs and service, Steve and his team at JSF 4x4 are always on hand. “Helpful and expert service is a priority for us. We are always here for our customers, whatever the weather!” l JSF 4x4 Norfolk, 1 Spar Road, Norwich NR6 6BY t: 01603 787064 www.jsf4x4norfolk.co.uk

ACIAL AESTHETICS is all the rage for men and women of any age. Keeping our skin looking younger and fresher has never been more safe and affordable, thanks to a wide range of innovative techniques. A year ago, friends and midwives Laura Jarrett and Bonnie Wines decided to use their considerable nursing experience and skills to set up Labon Aesthetics; offering discreet, safe treatments using quality products. “We were both at the end of our maternity leave and wanted a new challenge,” says Laura. “The more we talked the more we realised we share a passion for skincare, helping individuals October/November 2019 Vanilla

to look their very best and giving them the confidence that could change their lives. We knew we could make it happen alongside our careers as midwives, so we underwent training with Skinviva, who were Highly Commended at the Aesthetics Awards 2018. And so Labon Aesthetics was born!”

L

AURA AND BONNIE have nearly 30 years’ midwifery experience between them, and this knowledge of medical practice, anatomy and patient care is, they believe, the cornerstone of Labon Aesthetics. “Safety, and offering the best possible tailor-made and proven treatments is paramount,” Bonnie says. “Our experience as medical

professionals, of giving one-toone care, listening and working closely with individuals is very similar to the skills needed to deliver the highest level of aesthetic treatments. “We are very familiar with giving injections, using syringes and of course we know exactly what to do in the unlikely event of any emergency. We are members of ACE (Aesthetics Complications Expert) Group, which means we are well versed in handling all non-surgical cosmetic issues.” Customers can rest assured, then, that the treatments at Labon Aesthetics are provided by highly skilled practitioners. So what do they offer? “All our treatments are designed to achieve natural and subtle enhancements in non-surgical facial rejuvenation,” Laura says. “The list includes anti-wrinkle injections, fillers, dermaplaning and a range of retinol-based facial peels which are very kind to the skin, using the multi award-winning PCA Skin range. We will soon be adding microneedling to the list too.” Laura and Bonnie offer Labon Aesthetics at several locations around Norfolk, which means clients can go to the most convenient place for them. “We are slowly expanding, and our aim is to always prioritise safety and to build on our skills and knowledge to offer clients the best experience and results.” adds Bonnie. ■ Labon Aesthetics 07747 601707 / 07912 948046 www.LabonAesthetics.co.uk

ased in Norwich and Norfolk, psychotherapy and counselling organisation Emotionalskills has been helping individuals and couples ease and manage their anxiety, stress, depression, irritability and esteem issues since 2013. The founder of Emotionalskills, Shane Lutkin – who himself was hindered by depression, irritation and stress – decided to help others after he inadvertently fell into studying the theory of personality and psychotherapy and started to recognise his true self and developed a therapeutic model. Shane, comments: “We are a small dedicated team consisting of three therapists. I love working with couples and helping people recognise and optimise their true potential. Maxine Freshwater has worked with a varied client base including those from the emergency services and the NHS. She has helped many people break free from anxiety, stress, and depression, and believes strongly in the benefits of the therapeutic relationship. Sally Taylor has helped adults, young people, and their families, overcome a wide range of issues and has witnessed many people making lasting, positive changes to their lives. In particular, she

has significant experience supporting those struggling with substance abuse and those who are suffering, or who have suffered, from domestic violence. Shane adds, “Many of us suffer with emotional problems. You don't have to accept being anxious, depressed, frustrated or unhappy. You can do something about it. Emotionalskills is designed to help you ease stresses, tensions and gain a happier, fuller life. We are finding that the number of enquiries we are receiving in Norfolk and

Norwich is ever increasing. As such, we will be looking to recruit another Norwich based psychotherapist in the next few months.” All Emotionalskills therapists are DBS checked, degree educated and BACP members. FINE TUNING SORE BODIES

Talking about Sacro-iliac Joint Pain

ROSEN METHOD BODYWORK Rosen Method is an approach to well-being using sensitive touch and words to help people become aware of what they are holding physically and emotionally in their bodies. Rosen Method can help with common conditions, such as back pain and arthritis, when muscle tension is present. It also allows us to reconnect with and experience our true nature.

BY JOELLE FORDHAM MOst(DO) BODY FLOW OSTEOPATHY Most people who suffer with sacro-iliac joint (SIJ) pain describe it as lower back pain and it is very commonly mistaken for Sciatica. The pain is typically at the base of the spine or into the buttock and can spread to the back of the thigh. It is often a constant dull pain with sharp twinges on certain movements. Triggering activities include standing up from sitting, turning in bed, lifting the leg, putting socks on and leaning forward. . SIJ pain can last from a few days to a few decades if left untreated and it is a common cause of chronic lower back pain. Most cases of SIJ pain can be resolved with osteopathy, good advice and supporting exercises, regardless of how long you have had the problem for. Reducing unnecessary pain and suffering is what we’re all about and we have a very high success rate in helping with SIJ pain. Our treatment approach is gentle and effective and our new clients often comment on how at ease they felt, having initially been apprehensive about booking an appointment.

E HAVE NEVER been so into fitness, and with Norwich City flying high in the Premier League, the number of people wanting to get fit, lose weight, or just be more physical has seen a real boost. Perfect timing, then, for Fitness Superstore to choose Norwich as the location for its first outlet on the East Coast. Retail Marketing Manager Daniel Crawford says: “We opened in February, and Norwich is the perfect place for us. We are a national chain, and this means we can offer a broad range of the very best fitness equipment. “Norwich City’s success has really galvanised Norwich in terms of sport and fitness awareness, and we know that gym memberships are on the rise. Fitness Superstore gives people the option to invest in equipment for their own home, offering them convenience, privacy and longterm fitness. Larger corporates are also investing in gym equipment for their staff, because they recognise that fitness is great for overall health and wellbeing.”

Fitness, Matrix, Bowflex, Nautilus and more. You’ll find everything from treadmills, rowing machines and bikes, to cross trainers and multi-gyms, perfect for the seasoned fitness professional or someone just starting out. “Our strength training, or weight lifting, equipment is second to none,” says Daniel. “With the right gym equipment and exercises, strength training just twice a week has been shown to change the way your body looks and feels. Benefits include increased metabolism, enhanced sport performance and the prevention of injury.” But what about novices who want to get a bit fitter or lose a little weight? Isn’t all this equipment a bit confusing? “Not at all, we aim to make everyone

feel welcome and comfortable no matter what level they’re at." says Daniel. “All our staff come from a fitness background, so they can give the best advice and guidance on the right equipment for you, no matter what stage you are at. We will never advise you to buy something that isn’t suitable for you. “When you come and look around we are always on hand, demonstrating the equipment’s functionality and giving guidance on all things fitness. We offer free delivery and a great after sales service too, and we’re always at the end of the phone if you need any help.” ● Fitness Superstore, 1-7 St Stephen’s Rd, Norwich NR1 3SP 01603 980380 fitness-superstore.co.uk/norwich

THE GOLDEN HOUR Why it’s yellow’s time to shine!

Here’s a big colour story that definitely warms our cockles. We’ve called it yellow, but that’s a bit too simplistic. It’s definitely not the primary yellow colour of a Joules raincoat, for example. This yellow could be described as mustard, ochre, gold or turmeric. It’s yellow’s sophisticated big sister...

STYLE FILE BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIORS

QUESTION: I’ve always been told blue and green should never be seen, but I would like to use both in my house. Can I get away with it? ANSWER: Definitely. Blue and green look wonderful together in the right shades and can often be found together in nature (sky and grass?) so take inspiration from there. There are some great new colour palettes out there which focus on all the jewel like colours, from cobalt blue to emerald green. Look at the new Zoffany ‘Alchemy of Paint’ range to see how dramatic these shades are together.

© ZOFFANY PAINTS AND FABRICS & GP BAKER

At the moment the trend is for quite dark shades on the walls mixed with equally strong fabric on furniture – so you could have a deep blue wall with a peacock blue sofa and emerald green cushions! Or you might prefer the other end of the scale and use a pastel mint green with a baby blue. You can always mix other colours or neutrals in as well so the focus isn’t just on those colours. Remember there so many tones in between blue and green to tie them together, like teals and turquoises – think of a beautiful peacock feather and all the shades in that. I believe blue and green were made for each other, so don’t be afraid to use them together. ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

COLOUR BY NATURE

The new collection by Farrow & Ball in collaboration with the Natural History Museum t Imperial Blue Deep Imperial Purple transforms dining rooms and other intimate spaces, creating a luxurious look. Used in smaller quantities, such as inside a bookcase, it can add a rich pocket of colour to even the most neutral of rooms.

Ultra Marine Blue A stunning blue with a slightly romantic feel, that has been in favour since the 18th century, when it was often used to make small rooms feel bigger. For the contemporary home, it looks striking on cabinetry.

t Broccoli Brown Broccoli Brown is a quiet dark stone colour that sits effortlessly alongside natural materials such as weathered wood or flagstone floors. Its muted quality makes it ideally suited to studies, where its reserved tone serves as the ideal backdrop, especially when taken over the ceiling as well as the walls.

Farrow & Ball paint is available at Paint & Paper, Norwich

Dutch Orange u Dutch Orange is a clean bright orange with the ability to enliven any space. With a dynamic quality that brings an enveloping warmth to rooms, it feels lively combined with Verdigris Green and Skimmed Milk White, and looks particularly stunning with a Duck Green trim.

t Lake Red This adventurous colour appears red to some and pink to others, but always feels happy and vital. Fantastic in small spaces, Lake Red feels dynamic and energising used across walls, woodwork and ceilings, and works wonderfully inside cupboards.

2019 DESIGN TIPS

T

his is the time of year when we want to make our homes as cosy as possible for the next few months and the good news is you don’t have to spend a fortune doing so. Here are some tips to create a cosy autumn home.

p Brockway Dimension Collection comes in a large range of colours and three different qualities.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Creating an autumnal glow in your home is one of the easiest ways to create a room that looks and feels cosy. Lighting helps to set the right mood and ambience and there is nothing better than walking into a room that welcomes you with a warm, amber hue. Lamps are a quick way to do this, and by simply changing the lightbulb to a lower wattage you reduce the glare and create an intimate setting. It goes without saying that a warm toned carpet will always bring a glow to the coldest of rooms.

t Rugs add insulation and will transform a room quickly

LAY DOWN SOME RUGS

Rugs are always a popular choice for use throughout the year but they really come into their own during autumn and winter. Not only can they transform a room quickly thanks to their designs and colour, but they also add another layer of insulation to keep the warmth trapped inside.

There are so many styles of rugs available it’s impossible not to find one that will work for you. The variation in size also offers great options in how you want to position them in one or several rooms. You can pick out a large centrepiece rug that serves as the focal point of the room, or if space permits, buy a few smaller rugs that can be laid in different spots.

Elegantly styled legs and accented curves reminiscent of the early twentieth century are showing signs of a comeback in these bathroom designs from Synergy. ASH WINDOWS are a beautiful and stylish part of a period property, and vital to its appearance and heritage. But what do you do if they are a little careworn, damaged, draughty or need to be made secure? It’s very much a specialist job requiring the kind of craftsmanship and experience you don’t find every day. Local experts Sash Window Preservation bring years of knowledge to this field, offering a comprehensive service that includes slim double glazing, draught proofing and repairing wooden sash windows throughout the Eastern Counties and Greater London. Ricky Florido, the Sales Director, says: “Wooden sash windows go back to the 1600s, so they are potentially very old and working with them requires a great deal of skill, and a respect and understanding of the type of property in which they are fitted. “We are truly passionate about the work we do, and we like to work closely with people who want to maintain the period features and style of their home. Our experience enables us to

PRIVATE DINING AT THE ASSEMBLY HOUSE Experience the very best at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses

During its glittering history, The Assembly House has hosted a waxworks exhibition by Madame Tussaud, a concert by the composer Franz Liszt and countless lavish balls, including one in 1805 to celebrate Norfolk’s own Horatio Nelson’s famous victory in Trafalgar. Now we’d like to welcome you to one of the finest dining experiences in Norwich where you and your guests can eat in one of several magnificent rooms: splendour comes as standard at The Assembly House, alongside exceptional service and fantastic, locally-sourced menus designed by our director, chef Richard Hughes. Additionally, we can offer on-site parking in an incredible city centre location, tailored menus to suit every occasion, a wonderful selection of room sizes and styles - some of which boast sparkling chandeliers and romantic balconies and a secluded garden suitable for drinks receptions. And from 2016, you and your guests will also be able to stay at The Assembly House in one of our luxury new rooms.

OST OF our business is residential, but we have worked on some notable properties such as The Assembly House in Norwich (pictured top), and the Officer’s Mess at Duxford. Grade II listed buildings must, of course, be restored in keeping with the existing structure. “We work on everything from very old period houses, to new builds or even orangeries. Some people in a new build might want sash windows that match their neighbour’s, for continuity. We are happy to advise and work with the client to deliver exactly what they want, and we often

refer new clients to the work we have done, so they can go and have a look for themselves. “All the windows and glass units are made here in our joinery and glass manufacturing facilities, and we have multiple teams out on site every day. The wood we use is Accoya, a sustainable, durable, reliable and beautiful solid wood. “We know that no-one else locally can do what we do; offer handmade solutions and the highest level of customer care. We know our customers are satisfied, which is refected in our rating of ‘excellent’ on Trustpilot.” n For more information, visit sashwindowpreservation.co.uk or call 01603 908252

Inspired by a recent trip to Mexico, Adnams’ Head Distiller John McCarthy added a touch of spice to this limited-edition gin by including the native habanero pepper. Georgian style gets a modern twist... Vanilla PROFILE Historic St Giles House Hotel gears up for the festive season

T

HE IMPOSING facade of St Giles House Hotel is part of the fabric of Norwich and the unique four star hotel offers relaxation, style and luxury… with a bit of quirkiness thrown in! Since April this year, the hotel has been under new management, and it has seen a host of changes to make it even more stylish and appealing. General Manager Liza Dunnell is very excited about the new look and feel of the hotel. “St Giles has undergone an extensive refurbishment, and as part of this we have changed the colour scheme in reception, the bar and other public areas from burgundy and cream to navy and gold. It looks very smart indeed; classic, yet modern and chic. “We have also made some key changes to the breakfast menu, adding more dishes to the continental breakfast, plus some vegetarian options. In addition, our traditional afternoon tea menu is now even more delicious, with sandwiches, quiche, cakes, scones and petit fours. It’s a very elegant feast.” The hotel has also taken on an even more experienced team of staff – ensuring guests received the highest level of care. “We have appointed a very skilled mixologist

General Manager, Liza Dunnell, overseeing the St Giles’ refurbishment

in the bar, who has developed our very own St Giles cocktail,” adds Liza. “The ingredients are secret, of course! We have a special event every Friday between 5pm and 7pm, when cocktails are 2 for £10. “We have a new wine supplier, too, and a new drinks menu. This has really enabled us to shake things up, offer new and exciting beverages and even more variety.” For the moment, St Giles is not open for casual dining, instead focusing on functions, weddings, corporate events and group bookings. “We are always fully booked at the weekends for various groups, so we want to be able to focus on giving them the best possible experience. But in the not too distant future we will be bringing back our very popular

restaurant offering.” There are some exciting events coming up at the hotel, which are sure to go down a storm. “We are introducing some in-house events, like Clairvoyant Night and Gin & Jazz evenings. And we are hoping to hold our own wedding fair next year.” With the festive season in sight, why not take the pressure off Christmas Day by having Christmas lunch at the hotel, or welcoming 2020 at their stylish New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball? Both are available as a ‘package’ with an overnight stay. ■ St Giles House Hotel, 41-45 St Giles St, Norwich NR2 1JR t: 01603 275180 www.stgileshousehotel.co.uk

I

’ve been a chef now for more than forty years with a career full of variety, cooking for as few as 5 or as many as 2,500 in a day, from field to fine dining and much more in between. I'm now at the Fox at Lyng. My passion developed early from my experience living through the turbulent period in the 1970’s during the miners strikes. I can remember long periods with no electricity, closed schools and no means to produce a hot meal for days on end. I remember one instance when our family were all huddled in blankets in candle light at home one cold evening and the lights came on! Mum shut herself in the kitchen immediately and shortly there after brought us all a hot meal, our first in weeks. I can recall experiencing what I can only describe as pure joy that swept through me like a wave; which is when I realised the power that food had. So I decided then that if I could do that for one person a day with my food, my life might be a success and my goal has always been to inspire passion in others.

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR STORE CUPBOARD?

I like to keep plenty of salad stuffs, a good leaf like romaine because it lasts well, tomatoes, beets, scallions. I always have a variety of spices often chillis because I love big flavours. The usuals too,

78

succulent... or some salt and pepper squid, perfectly cooked to its most tender state. The line is thin. The skill is everything. WHAT INGREDIENT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE NEXT BIG THING?

I know what I’d like it to be, but it’s always been big, I just think it’s a bit underrated. Spelt. I understand it’s not good for gluten free diners, but it not only has its own flavour, it’s also capable of absorbing or marrying other big flavours and enhancing them with its own. cheese, butter, milk and eggs. I fluctuate between, good ham, chicken, corned beef and salamis, cod, turbot, mackerel, fresh sardines and squid. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO EAT AFTER A HARD DAY IN THE KITCHEN?

I’ll be honest, I tend to graze on work days and often end up with little or no appetite for a meal after work, it’ll usually be something really simple like a good sandwich, seasoned of course, because tasting rich food through service all evening can kill the appetite. WHAT TYPE OF COOKING DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?

I love cooking fish because it requires real skill and discipline to perfect it during a busy shift. To see that pink hue come back on the bones of a whole plaice or sole after consumption by a guest warms my heart. The feel of a lovely piece of salmon, knowing as it goes out that inside is that perfect texture, soft, creamy and

NORFOLK IS FULL OF GREAT FOOD AND DRINK PRODUCERS. ANY RECENT DISCOVERIES YOU CAN SHARE?

I’ve always loved Cromer crabs, Norfolk asparagus and Norfolk lavender. We have introduced a Norfolk cheese plate on our seasonal Christmas menu this year so I’m excited to try out the offcuts in some specials during the winter months. I discovered a company making a chicken liver and black truffle parfait last year at Holkham which was sublime, so it’s inspired us to make more of an effort to work on our flavour combinations and to perfect them. Some of the Norfolk Gins are amazing, we’ve introduced a cured salmon dish to our Christmas menu this year and we’re going to try some of the gins out in the curing process. ■ The Fox at Lyng, The Street, Lyng, Norwich NR9 5AL t: 01603 872316 www.thefoxatlyng.co.uk Vanilla October/November 2019

MINI PAMPER EXPERIENCE at Barnham Broom Hotel, Golf & Spa

I

Vanilla TRIED

N OUR stressful and hectic lives, how many of us actually take quality time out to slow down, relax and be pampered in luxurious surroundings? Barnham Broom Hotel, Golf & Spa has tapped into this perfectly, with a great range of spa days, breaks and treatments that appeal to everyone who needs a bit of TLC. This is an all-round personalised experience that incorporates use of the pool, sauna, steam room and gym in their health and fitness centre, The Edge, treatments in the luxury spa, and delicious food such as afternoon tea. What could be better? Barnham Broom has also just launched its brand new Vegan Spa Journey, a ‘guilt-free’ day of indulgence. I went along for a Mini Pamper Experience to see if I could leave my stress behind. Charlotte, my lovely Spa Therapist, gave me a warm welcome and took me under her wing, starting with a tour and then providing me with a fluffy white towelling robe and slippers. I began my de-stress journey with an invigorating 15 minutes in the sauna, and when the heat had relaxed me nicely I cooled off in the swimming pool; a lovely bright space with huge picture windows overlooking the golf course. After a few lengths I settled onto one of the comfortable loungers and with the sun streaming in through those windows my stress was a million miles away. Back to the spa for my treatment, a back massage, and

Charlotte asked what I wanted to achieve: relaxation, invigoration or detox. Stress, definitely, so she gave me a choice of two ESPA oils to see which I preferred. The orange oil smelled delicious, so she warmed it and gave me the loveliest, most relaxing back massage I have ever had. Charlotte explained that each range of spa products has its own massage techniques. She and her colleagues have undergone training for the new vegan range they are using, Ytsara. Glowing, refreshed and chilled, it was time for my afternoon tea, and I was fortunate to be joined by the hotel’s Marketing Manager Josie Bachelor. The sumptuous traditional tea is a stylish affair; a range of delicious sandwiches, scones, cakes, macaroons, and a very special strawberry and elderflower posset, all beautifully presented and served with a

choice of the finest tea or coffee. “We offer so much choice at Barnham Broom, to such a wide range of people and age groups, and the spa experiences are just one side of what we do,” explains Josie. “Our food offering is superb, and our Brasserie isn’t just for residents, it’s a high end, but relaxing way to dine out and it’s only 20 minutes from Norwich. “I think what makes us so unique is that we are independent and offer so much at a very high standard. We strive to maintain the best quality in everything, and our staff genuinely care and love what they do.” ■ Mini Pamper Experience: One treatment each £50 Two treatments each £70 Barnham Broom, Honingham Rd Norwich NR9 4DD t: 01603 334157 www.barnham-broom.co.uk

impact that plastic is having on our oceans and the globe in general. As a result, so many people have voted with their feet, moving away from the supermarket prepackaged and single use plastic mentality and they understand that they have to make that change now.”

B

USINESS is increasing 3050% every year for Richard, and he sees this continuing as a trend. “People are now actively seeking out companies that have a ‘no single use plastic’ policy and that is fantastic news for the world and for us. Plant-based and vegan diets are also on the increase, so we seem to have really tapped into what people need right now, both

physically and spiritually. “I see our role as not just supplying great fresh local produce, but educating as well. Seasonality has been lost, because you can buy any type of fruit or veg from supermarkets all year round. With our customers we talk about the benefits of eating foods in season, where the food comes from, where it’s grown and how it’s stored. “Our customers can have what they want, we are very flexible, but they will always get the freshest and most local veg, knowing they are doing the planet a real service as well.”

HAT COULD be better than delicious fresh veg, grown locally and conveniently delivered to your door by someone friendly?! The popularity of veg boxes is at an all-time high, as we become more aware that local is better for all sorts of reasons, and supermarkets cannot compete with the freshness. But not all companies like this are created equal. Norfolk Veg Box has recognised that the issue of single use plastic is gathering pace globally, and running their business ‘plastic-free’ has had a remarkable impact on their customer base. “When we started 10 years ago we wanted to be a plastic-free business as much as possible and our overall ethos was to reduce waste, be sustainable and minimise our environmental impact,” explains owner Richard Ewin. “We now use no single use plastics at all. Wrapping is with compostable paper, and the veg boxes are either wood or hard plastic, which we re-use again and again. “Probably the biggest impact on our business was David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II programme last year. It was a shocking reality check for a lot of people, which showed the horrific

Harvey Albrow Partner at Albrow & Sons Ltd

My City Life Harvey Albrow is a partner in the family jewellers Albrow & Sons Ltd, in All Saints Green, Norwich. Albrow & Sons buy and sell both antique and modern jewellery and silver and carry out onsite repairs and valuations. Albrow and Sons are members of the National Association of Jewellers and Harvey is a member of the Institute of Registered Valuers.

When did you first get involved in the business? I first worked in the jewellery trade as a teenager and we have had the family business for thirty years. What are the pros and cons to working with your closest family members? Working with your family definitely has its pros and cons! Dad has been in the trade for a long time and has a wealth of knowledge and it is great for him to be on hand

to offer advice. We’ve found that being able to trust and depend on each other being the biggest strength. Of course the big downside is that we don’t talk about anything other than business... much to the annoyance of the rest of the family! What has been your most exciting find? One of the best things about our trade is that you never know what you are going to see. We have been lucky enough over the years to buy,

What sets Albrow & Sons apart from its competition? I believe that it is more important than ever to offer something different to your competition. We do our own repairs and valuations without the need to post jewellery to outside sources. We carry a massive stock of antique and unusual modern jewellery and make our own pieces using fine natural gemstones. What are your hidden gems in the City? Work life does tend to take over and having a growing family seems to get in the way too, but when we have time, my wife and I like to see what’s on at the Norwich Arts Centre and The Sainsbury Centre. Doesn’t that make me sound cultured?! ■ Albrow & Sons, All Saints Green, Norwich NR1 3NA 01603 622569
