SNAKESKIN PRINT

Animal print is still going strong and this is especially so with snakeskin patterns. Look for pieces in neutral tones to add a touch of timeless style to your wardrobe – as these styles can be mixed and matched with other items in your wardrobe.

be sustainable

Overwhelmed by the many new fashion trends for the new season? Why not make Spring the time to take stock and fall in love with timeless style, says Jarrold personal stylists Florrie Dunn and Katy Michael. The winter sales are over and now it’s time for a wardrobe refresh. With the new season collections coming into store now and over the next few months, there are many new trends to get excited about. However, here at Jarrold, while we love embracing the new styles we also look to make your wardrobe work for you so that you can love wearing pieces for longer. This way you can create a timeless wardrobe that transcends the seasons and the fickle trends, making fashion less throw-away and more sustainable. Here’s a sneak peek of some of the looks instore now or coming soon that will update your look in a viable way...

BLUE

Pantone’s colour for 2020 is Classic Blue so you will start to see many items in this hue throughout Spring. As the smock dress comes back into fashion, a blue dress with lace detail and a boho 70s twist will see you through Spring and Summer in style. Make it one that is made from organic cotton and you are definitely onto a winner.

MIXING PRINTS

If you have seen SS20s psychedelic prints on the catwalk and wondered how you can wear them for longer (so not adhering to throwaway fashion) investing in a piece that mixes prints for you is the perfect solution. Look for items that can be worn in different ways, such as a shirt dress, which can be worn as a dress or undone like a jacket over a pair of jeans.

I

often have a chuckle when I see adverts from some opticians extolling the virtues of modern tech when choosing your new eyewear. “Stare at the camera, smile and the computer says... square and brown or round and blue...” etc. Sounds so easy until you think about it, so this now means you can only ever wear the same shape and colour? How boring! At Oculus we have developed a frame styling method that takes time and thought. It may be that a classic preppy shell is the best look for you at this

moment, but we will get you to experiment with different shapes and colours. If somebody really isn’t sure about their new eyewear or is going for something that would normally be out of their comfort zone, we allow people to take some frames home so that they can look into their own mirror in peace and quiet. It’s such an important purchase and, like everything else, the more effort you put into (choosing them) the better the result. FREE FRAME STYLING SESSION!

We love working with Vanilla magazine and are happy to offer all Vanilla readers a free frame styling session. All you need to do is book an appointment. Looking forward to seeing you! Jeff@Oculus

THE STYLE SHOW TEAM

SUSTAINABLE MISSION

Chrissi Rix, The Style Show founder

Style Show 2020

This is going to be a year packed with style – and we have so much to tell you about. 2020 is all about expansion and we have upped our game to improve The Style Show offering for you. We have launched ONLINE SHOPPING, with invaluable styling tips for each item, and booked a whole host of exciting shows and events — so don’t miss those! Plus we have set up THE STYLE SHOW ACADEMY, a course for those who are interested in a career in fashion, retail and styling; and our SUSTAINABILITY MISSION is a key focus, where we re-sell items customers bring in for charity. Share the love and reduce landfill!

Like many businesses today, we strive to ensure that we are as sustainable as possible. We all produce too much waste, and we have made it our mission to recycle where we can, reduce items going to landfill, while also working with charity as much as possible. As part of this we have set up a system whereby anyone can bring in their unwanted, but wearable, items, which we then re-sell at our LILAC PRE-LOVED CHARITY EVENT. All funds raised go to the charity. At the same time those bringing in clothing will receive 10% OFF one of our timeless collection items. So everyone benefits. One person’s unwanted clothing can be someone else’s perfect new item – charity and vintage shops have never been more popular! And bringing much-needed funds to worthwhile charities is something very close to our hearts. So take a look through your wardrobe. If you have anything that’s still in good condition, but you haven’t worn it for years, or it no longer fits, or it just isn’t you, bring it to us and we can give it a new life!

Y R E L L E CHOOSING THE W E J G IN D D E W RING BY BRADLEY HATCH

S

urely the centrepiece of every wedding, gorgeous jewellery. From engagement rings and wedding bands, to necklaces, bracelets and tiaras, Bradley Hatch in Wroxham has been creating unique and beautiful jewellery for 25 years. There is no better place to go for very special pieces that celebrate your love. Bradley says: “From the moment a couple walk into the shop we are focused on making sure they find something beautiful they will love wearing and treasure for the rest of their lives. Many come here for an engagement ring first, and for them it’s a very important and emotional process to find a ring that represents how they feel about each other, and that the women loves to wear. “When they have set a date,

30

they return to talk about the wedding bands, and most of the time this is for both parties. Men often want something a little plainer, and this can be for practical reasons, if they have a job where the band may get damaged or scratched. “Couples can buy new pieces from us, but most want something bespoke and unique, and this is where we excel. We have a fantastic workshop here, where we can design and create any type of jewellery. Couples often have an idea what they want, and it’s our job to take those ideas and show them what can be achieved, look at different designs, settings, shapes and colours, to make the perfect bands. “The rings need to be wearable, too, so they must be comfortable, sit right and be the

right shape and width for the person’s hand. These days, the fashion is for a platinum, which looks lovely; sharp and bright, and it’s very affordable. Some couples choose mixed platinum and gold, which brings a warmth to the rings. “Stones are also more popular than ever in wedding rings. Diamonds, of course, are eternally beautiful, they keep their colour and are durable. But you can add colour to the wedding band, we recently created a wedding band with a floral leaf design, incorporating pink tourmalines with diamonds, it was stunning. We really can create anything, simple or complex, to suit any pocket.” Family heirlooms also play a part in weddings, and Bradley is often asked to remodel precious family pieces into something special for the big day. “These can be stones, or gold melted down to use in wedding bands. Creating bespoke pieces, sourcing unusual stones and hand-making unique pieces on site is our forte. We just love to bring excellent quality to everyone, especially for the most important events.” ● Bradley Hatch Jewellers, Tunstead Road, Wroxham, Norwich, Norfolk, NR12 8QG www.bradleyhatch.com

how to be the best

WEDDING GUEST! E BY ISOBEL’S BOUTIQU

With peak wedding season just around the corner, choosing what to wear, and what not to wear, can be a difficult task regardless of your role at the wedding or relationship with the happy couple. Isobel Ford, from Isobel’s Boutique, shares her top tips on how best to avoid a wedding day fashion faux pas…

1

Don’t wear white, or off-white, or really, really pale blue. This should be a no-brainer, but it still bears saying. The cardinal sin of weddings, wearing white is by far the biggest mistake that can be made by a wedding guest.

2

Don’t wear anything too skimpy. See-through fabrics, plunging necklines and cutaway dresses should be worn with caution. Weddings are family events and usually day to evening celebrations so steer clear of anything too daring or risqué.

3

Don’t upstage the bride. Avoid going too overboard. Prom dresses, maxi gowns with a train and multi-coloured sequins that scream look at me are best avoided.

4

If you want to wear a hat but have no idea what suits you, talk to a professional and visit a few hat shops. A fascinator can look superb, too. Think about hiring a hat for the day; so much cheaper.

February/March 2020 Vanilla

5

Avoid wearing black. You’re going to a wedding not a funeral. This rule is especially relevant for summer weddings when guests should embrace the celebratory vibe of the day and opt for bold colours and prints.

6

Don’t dress too casually. Regardless of the dress code wearing jeans is a complete and utter no-no at weddings. If you choose to wear trousers, still try to be somewhat dressy, with a classic trouser suit.

Wedding outfits by Glitz and Personal Choice from £199 available at Isobel’s Boutique

7

Don’t feel pressured into buying a hugely expensive new designer outfit. You can find gorgeous things at local boutiques, that will be just as good, but kinder to your pocket. If you must buy something new, invest in something you can wear again, or mix and match with a new jacket and shoes.

8

Accessorise with stunning jewellery, scarves, shoes and bags. But the key to success here is balance and scale. Don’t match hat, shoes and bag, just two of the three!

● Isobel’s Boutique, with shops in Drayton and Holt, specialise in wedding outfits and has a fabulous stock of sizes from 14 to 36. They also have a selection of hats, fascinators, handbags, scarves and jewellery so you can try on complete looks along with help and advice!

WEDDING BELLES face First...

LAURA DOSSETT BRIDAL MAKEUP ARTIST “To ensure the bride is happy with her makeup before the big day, I always do a trial run about six weeks before the wedding. Then, a week before the wedding, at my studio in Bridewell Alley, I prepare the bride’s skin for the big day. This can include dermaplaning, which removes the soft hairs from the face and creates a perfect base for makeup. A facial is also popular, along with HD Brows for defined eyebrows, and a lash lift, to give a natural curl to eyelashes. “On the morning of the wedding I go to the bride’s home, or the venue, and do the makeup for the whole bridal party. Everyone is excited and there is so much laughter and love. It’s a wonderful way for all the ladies to spend that special morning together and feel pampered. “The popular makeup look for weddings is ‘soft glam’, which is natural, with radiant and glowing skin. I focus on using crueltyfree makeup brands, and more and more people are asking for these. I achieve the look using soft peaches, a sheen of eyeshadow, a few additional false lashes, all to create an understated, natural look. Lips can be striking and red, or nude, soft pink or with just a sheen of gloss.” ● 14 Bridewell Alley, Norwich NR2 1AQ 01603 614333.  lovelauramakeupartist

Finding the perfect venue is the best place to start, say the event planners at St Giles House Hotel

T

HE GORGEOUS Baroque beauty of the St Giles House Hotel is a must-see for any couple thinking of tying the knot. This unique Norwich boutique hotel boasts the most striking facade and the stylish interior never fails to disappoint, with it’s stunning Georgian features. Wedding manager Gerda Mikailionyte paints a tempting picture of what the happy couple can expect from the venue. “Our Walnut Suite is a beautiful space, with wood panelling, a show-stopping chandelier and ceiling carvings. It’s ideal for up to 50 people for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, or for 80 evening guests. “For larger wedding parties, we can offer exclusive use of the entire hotel, which is a very popular choice. This includes everything you need for the big day; the ceremony and wedding breakfast for up to 60, 90 for the wedding breakfast and 150 in the evening, with use of the bar and lounge, space in the restaurant for the evening event, live band or DJ, the bar and accommodation with 24 stunning bedrooms. We have some wonderful new wedding packages, so whatever the size, style or budget we are very flexible and more than happy to create the day

to suit a couple’s needs.” The bridal suite is also a talking point at St Giles House. “It really is beautiful, with a long, light corridor which is the perfect setting for taking official photographs,” says Gerda. “It has a spacious living area, bedroom and a huge mirror and dressing table for the bride when she’s getting ready. The bathroom is lovely too, and includes a roll-top bath. Overall we have created a very romantic space, which is traditional, but with modern touches. Our couples love it.” Catering is key for a wedding, whether it’s a buffet or something more formal, and Gerda’s aim is to make sure her clients and their

guests have exactly what they want. “We have a variety of menus to choose from, but we are always open to suggestions and our chefs are very creative. We also cater for many dietary needs, such as gluten free, vegetarian, vegan and lactose intolerant.” It’s shaping up to be a busy year for Gerda and her team. “It’s a very exciting time and creating dream days for couples is a wonderful job. We will also be adding hen parties to our offering, where groups can hold a tea party, or a disco, in the Walnut Suite.”

“Separation can be emotionally challenging and the legal process, complex.”

The New Year Divorce Peak – 10 practical tips MY QUESTION: My husband and I have been together for 17 years but as of late, I have made the decision that I would like to seek a divorce. Last Christmas was the final straw in our marriage. I don’t even know where to begin with getting a divorce, my mind is all over the place and it is a situation I hoped I would never been in. Any advice at this time would be greatly appreciated.

40

At the beginning of each New Year many couples decide to separate and applications for divorce and dissolution of civil partnership peak. It can be hard to know where to start with the process of separation. Your partner was perhaps the go-to person to discuss problems and issues with. Separation can be emotionally challenging and the legal process, complex. We list below 10 things you may like to consider when faced with separation:

1. GET LEGAL ADVICE AT AN EARLY STAGE Even if you do not intend to instruct a solicitor to represent

you, it is always advisable to have an initial chat with a Specialist Family Lawyer regarding the way forward. This ensures you know your legal position and your rights before proceeding. It does not have to be costly to take advice. Steeles Law offer an initial meeting with a family law solicitor for £75 plus VAT for up to an hour when you can chat through any legal issues and raise any questions you have.

2. DON’T PANIC

Be cautious about making hasty decisions as you may take a wrong turn. For example: moving out of the property without seeking legal advice about your position first. Vanilla February/March 2020

REAL LIVES

3. DON’T RELY ON ADVICE GIVEN BY FRIENDS There will often be a friend or colleague who is keen to offer you their advice. Every divorce is different due to the individual circumstances of each couple. Therefore, the likely outcomes are different and one can rarely rely on advice given by people from their own experience.

4. DON’T ASSUME Many people make assumptions without taking legal advice. There are many myths associated with divorce and separation but most of these are either inaccurate or wrong. Good legal advice will set you off in the right direction from the outset.

5. REMAIN AMICABLE AND CONSIDER MEDIATION If you can, have a discussion with your spouse about the way forward. The days of parties going to Court for a Judge to make a decision in respect of financial issues or matters relating to children are becoming infrequent. The ethos now is to try and deal with things in an amicable way whilst also minimising costs for both parties.

6. FOCUS ON THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILDREN If you have children ensure you discuss issues around separation out of earshot of the children. Avoid making the children feel that they have to take sides. Focus on the children’s best interests as separation is a difficult and confusing time for them. February/March 2020 Vanilla

7. GET ORGANISED

We are often amazed at the number of clients who seek advice and do not know their own financial situation. Ensure you know about what bank accounts and debts are held in joint names. Be aware of the level of joint debt. Know what is owed on credit cards and mortgages. Be in control of your own financial situation.

8. BE REALISTIC

Be realistic in your expectations and do not set them too high. Whatever agreement is reached has to be workable. Ultimately, the matrimonial finances are going to be divided somehow and both parties’ future housing and income needs will need to be met.

9. CONSIDER USING A COUNSELLOR

Divorce and separation can be a very stressful time and there are many counsellors who are able to

offer support. Discussing purely emotional matters with your lawyer is not the best use of your funds. An expert counsellor can be the most cost-effective way forward in the long run.

10. DO NOT COMMENT ABOUT YOUR EX ON SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES Commenting about your expartner on socialmedia will likely only antagonise the situation further and should be avoided.

■ Our specialist Family Law Team at Steeles Law offer expert advice regarding divorce, separation, dissolution of civil partnerships and all family law matters. N

ORWICH HIGH SCHOOL for Girls on Newmarket Road beat a record number of entries across the country to win Independent Girl’s School of the year at the Independent School of the year awards held at the end of 2019. The school was one of just seven girls’ schools to have made it through to the final round of the competition before winning the top prize at the ceremony at the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London on Monday, October 7. The panel of 14 judges based their decision on evidence of success stories and awarded 20 prizes covering arts, sports, outreach, student success and careers programmes, as well as the top individual school awards. Kirsty von Malaisé, headmistress of Norwich High School for Girls and one of the EDP’s Top 100 Inspiring women of 2019, said: “Norwich High School is an outstanding school and I could not be more proud that we have received national recognition of this, particularly with the exceptionally strong competition in this category. “We were lauded not only for our pioneering Inspiring Females programme which has supported well over 3,000 young women from Norfolk and beyond over the last three years, but also for our bold ambitions for the girls in many other exceptional initiatives.” The award is the latest in line of prestigious prizes for the school. In October, the school became one of only 32 other schools in the UK – and the only senior school in Norfolk – to receive February/March 2020 Vanilla

Most recently, the school has just been shortlisted TES

INTRODUCTORY SPA EXPERIENCE

Pro60 Supercharged facial with a 30 minute massage at Therapyinc

ASILY ONE of the nicest perks of my job is that even at hectic times like New Year, Vanilla still gets to review the very latest treatments out there on the local beauty scene. When you’re exhausted and generally drained from late nights and over-indulging, the offer to review a massage, facial or the two rolled into one is a godsend. And so it was that I trundled along to Therapyinc on Exchange Street on a cold, rainy day. I hadn’t booked the exact facial I wanted over the phone, as I had no idea really what I wanted or needed. I was in the hands of experienced massage and facial therapist, salon owner, Sam Clarke. She explained their treatments are best tailored to the needs of the client and their skin on the day – advice and great coffee is always free if they need any help deciding.

Sam Clarke (above) and the new Therapyinc salon

Sam is no stranger to the Norwich beauty scene, being in her successful Therapyinc business for 15 years, but a massage therapist for much longer and consequently has a loyal following. She felt the time was right to move her business to the city centre and create a lovely oasis of calm on Exchange Street, right opposite Jarrold.

Y

OU CAN tell by the list of facials on offer, that Therapyinc is no run-ofthe-mill beauty salon. Names of ‘superfacials’ include Omorovicza Blue Diamond, Cult Beauty Twilight Zone and Gua Sha

Aromabalance. On this occasion (and there will be others!) I went for the Pro60 Supercharged Facial with a 30 minute Massage Melt. They refer to it as their ‘introductory spa experience’ and the perfect treatment as a firsttimer to Therapyinc. The ultimate 90-minute treatment is customised to target all of your skin needs and promises to leave your skin radiant and glowing. It incorporates lots of hot towels and steam, LED light therapy to brighten and boost collagen production and highly advanced professional-grade actives for deep treatment. But here’s the big secret at

Therapyinc… whatever Sam thinks your skin needs, it gets. A menu of additions include an analysis of your facial landscape, Foreo power cleanse, Dermalux light therapy, extractions and eye area focus and dreamy facial yoga and reflexology. So what you end up with are utterly relaxing and endless possibilities. The luxury began the moment I lay down on the heated, contoured massage bed. Always a good sign when your therapist gives your feet and lower legs some pre-facial attention, just to get the body in full relax mode. The facial then commenced and so I was treated to layers of procedures fused with a menu of spa touch therapies and fusion energy massage. I got completely lost in the process and any sense of time… for an hour and a half! Despite the intensive procedures, afterwards my face was neither blotched or reddened and as promised I had a fabulous glow and the results lasted for days. I’ve come away with a Dermalogica cleanser too as my thirsty skin really needed some help with products to use at home. Without a doubt, this treatment had to be the single most luxurious and relaxing facial treatment I’ve ever had. Needless to say, I’m eyeing up the other superfacials on the list! ■ REVIEW: LAURA HALL

WELLBEING

LIVING WITH FIBROMYALGIA

illa by Joelle Fordham at Body Flow Osteopathy Van PORT RE

U

p to 2 million people in the UK wake up to chronic pain, muscle stiffness, brain fog and to symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome every day. Most of them would have been awake multiple times at night from various body aches, burning nerve pain and/or numbness. They will go through the day with a deep sense of fatigue, poor short term memory and difficulties concentrating. But come night time, they’ll struggle to find sleep, yet again... This is the difficult reality for many people suffering with Fibromyalgia. These invisible symptoms can span a spectrum of severity: at the milder end of the scale Fibromyalgia will be a hindrance to an otherwise normal life but at the severe end of the spectrum, sufferers can be profoundly disabled by their symptoms. The impact of chronic pain on one’s mental health can also be very significant. Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion and therefore, other conditions which can mimic its symptoms need to be ruled out first. It can be a

52

long and frustrating process, which can add to the anxiety and depression many sufferers experience alongside their Fibromyalgia symptoms.

C

onventional medical treatment is mostly aimed at managing symptoms through the use of various medications, exercise and relaxation techniques with various results. In practice, we consistently find that muscular pain and musculoskeletal pain are major pain contributors which both respond well to Osteopathic treatment and myofascial releases. In Joelle’s experience, getting the body moving more efficiently in a more fluid manner can have a significant impact on pain symptoms and often improves fatigue too. Osteopathy can therefore be a very useful approach in supporting recovery from fibromyalgia.

Joelle has a specialist interest in Fibromyalgia, ME/ Chronic fatigue syndrome and hypermobility disorders and has helped many sufferers on their way to a better life. Patience, determination, lifestyle changes and a multi-disciplinary approach is essential but getting your life back from Fibromyalgia is absolutely possible! Our treatment approach is gentle and effective and our new clients often comment on how at ease they felt, having initially been apprehensive about booking an appointment. Do you have fibromyalgia or know someone who has? Take the first step to reclaiming your life: Contact Body Flow Osteopathy today! FINE TUNING SORE BODIES

ROSEN METHOD BODYWORK Rosen Method is an approach to well-being using sensitive touch and words to help people become aware of what they are holding physically and emotionally in their bodies. Rosen Method can help with common conditions, such as back pain and arthritis, when muscle tension is present. It also allows us to reconnect with and experience our true nature.

Is it Fibromyalgia? BY JOELLE FORDHAM MOst(DO) PRINCIPAL OSTEOPATH AT BODY FLOW OSTEOPATHY

Many conditions have symptoms which can mimic Fibromyalgia. Amongst those, hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and hypermobility type Elher Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) are perhaps the greatest mimickers of Fibromyalgia. Both are connective tissue disorders by which sufferers will commonly identify as being ‘double jointed’ in lay terms. HSD and hEDS specialists estimate that up to a staggering 80% of Fibromyalgia sufferers may be misdiagnosed and have a hypermobility disorder instead of, or as well as Fibromyalgia. The symptoms are very similar but the processes by which symptoms arise and the management strategies are different and this is why getting an accurate diagnosis is important. Joelle has a specialist interest in Fibromyalgia, ME/Chronic fatigue syndrome and Hypermobility disorders and has helped many sufferers navigate their way around these complex conditions. Whilst a formal diagnosis is not necessary in order to start osteopathic treatment, we may ask that you speak to your GP about your symptoms. Do you think you may have Fibromyalgia or a hypermobility disorder? Let us help.

it for a moment and think. Think about your body. Does it hurt anywhere? Does it ache? Draw your attention to those tense spots and consider them for a bit. Don’t worry, I’ll wait… Perhaps you've tried the usual therapies for that bad back or tight neck but yet, you’re always longing for a comfy cushion. If you can consider the possibility that there is a relationship between mind and matter, then the Rosen Method of treatment might be of great interest to you. Rosen uses very gentle physical and verbal ‘touch’ to access unconscious thoughts and feelings

which may be presenting in the body as tension, pain or aching. I visited Touch Matters in Norwich to try it, guided on my therapeutic journey by practitioner Louisa Turner (pictured above). Louisa has over 25 years experience working with the body. She is also a physiotherapist working with neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. Her interest in the mind-body connection led her to Rosen. She assures me that it's not necessary for me to have the answers to anything that arises during our time together because the benefit comes from feeling it. Louisa works from a cosy

studio which is warm and smells delicious. And it is very relaxing! After a health questionnaire, I was on the table. I have no idea how Louisa does it but from some very light touch, she identified an area for us to work on. Her observations were incredibly insightful. This prompted me to talk about often considered but rarely verbalised restrictions I feel I face. These directly correlated to the tightness Louisa pinpointed in my body. It is absolutely safe to express whatever bubbles up during your session. In fact, this is an important aspect of the work to bring you into a closer relationship with yourself and your body. Far from having the snooze I had imagined, I found myself engaged in a sightseeing tour of my thoughts and physical feelings. It’s amazing what we are no longer in touch with. Unconscious emotions which we could really benefit from gently addressing. It’s funny to say that you feel better from something that you hadn’t thought you needed to do. But I do feel better! After our appointment I was a bit tired – happy tired, the kind you get after a day’s hike or an awesome run. I was moving easily, no creaks or clicks! And I came away with some clear intentions for my health and wellbeing. All of which was incredibly surprising but very welcome. Roman blinds – less fussy than curtains.

BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIOR DESIGN

QUESTION: What options do I have for covering very large widows? ANSWER: Depending on where they sit in the

wall – high up or running to the floor – I would say curtains are the most obvious choice. I always prefer full length curtains where possible as they look so much more elegant and can add height to a room. (The only exception would be if you have teeny tiny cottage windows fairly high up in the wall) You could also do Roman blinds if you want less fuss. Make sure it sits well above the window and is as wide as the sill, if you have one. If there’s no room, then they would sit inside the reveal, but this will take away some of your light. Even simpler would be a roller blind, but they can look a little bit sparse and are more for practical reasons rather than decorative purposes. If fabric doesn’t appeal, then you could have shutters fitted. These are a permanent solution really, but do come in different slat sizes and also plenty of wood colours, so there is still room for personalisation. A slightly more affordable option would be wooden venetians which have a similar feel but are not quite a sleek.

Blinds and shutters are alternatives but you can also combine with curtains

If you really want to dress the windows, then you could do a combination of curtains and blinds (either shutters or Roman) which will give you various options for closing off the outside world. ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

HOMES With Christmas well and truly over and decorations packed away, it is the time of year to spring clean or, better still, bring new vibrancy and vigour to your home with a redecoration project.

2020 will see a shift away from hard, graphic interiors to a softer, more natural feel, meaning that blue really is the new grey! We instinctively gravitate towards colours that connect us with nature. As a consequence the sky and sea evoke feelings of escapism, relaxation and reflection. Key colours this season will be teals and inky blues paired with softer, neutral tones. American colour company Pantone has chosen “universal favourite” Classic Blue, or Pantone 19-4052, as its colour of the year for 2020. Classic Blue is “a boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky" while also being a colour that challenges us to "think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication”.

Paella at b’nou

For the last year b’nou owners, Ben and Anna, have been concentrating on the bar side of the business (oh, and having a baby!) But this January we saw the eagerly awaited return of food to the popular bar on Exchange Street, as they launched their first (of hopefully many) Paella Nights. As with their table service bar, there were no bookings required, it was just first come first serve. Ben cooked it live in the back room of b’nou for all to see and at just £10 per portion, it was a big hit with the customers. Keep a lookout on facebook for more dates with Paella!  barbnounorwich

trattons new eatery ‘Afterfive’ is situated in the semi-basement of the hotel and opens every day at 5pm.Meet after work, have an early supper or enjoy an evening catch up with friends, Afterfive is somewhere to eat and relax. Meat and fish are provided by local traders within the town or county. Strattons owner Vanessa Scott, a pioneer of the local food movement, says ‘Eating out has changed dramatically since the hotel opened in 1990 especially the more traditional style of restaurant where diners sign up to eat three or more courses. We are open from 5pm offering lighter more flexible dishes responding to market demand. We encourage you to order a few dishes each and share. It's an exciting time and quality and ethical values will still be at the fore of our thinking.’ On the seasonal changing

IT’S TIME TO ‘WALLOW’!

N

ORWICH’S EVERPOPULAR wine bar and eatery, The Wallow, has a mouthwatering line-up for spring to help you celebrate love, family and the many pleasures of food and wine. For all you lovers out there, why not take that special person to The Wallow for Valentine’s Night ‘a deux’, where the atmosphere is romance all the way? The special offer for the evening is a sharing board for two with bread, truffles, two glasses of Champagne or a bottle of house red or white, all for just £25 per head? It’s a popular night, so book early! Always look after your mother, and she will love you even more if you take her to The Wallow for their Mother’s Day evening meal on 22 March. It’s a similar package to Valentine’s Night, also based on two sharing, but mum is the lucky one who gets a glass of bubbly. Cheers! The Wallow isn’t just for after hours, the lunchtime crowd flock there between 11am and 4pm because it’s such a great place to find the most delicious

deli-style food. Owner Laz says: “We are often busy for lunch and our toasties are hugely popular, made with sourdough bread. The best sellers are the ‘posh’ cheese, made with local Baron Bigod cheese, and the spicy grilled cheese. We also do vegan toasties. “Our deli-style sandwiches can be made to order with our huge range of meats, cheeses and salads, and customers can choose from olive bread or ciabatta. The salads can be super healthy or indulgent, anything you want. We also have a great range of tempting cakes, all made locally, and a coffee and cake deal every day.” No wonder it’s packed every lunchtime! The Wallow is serious about celebrating wine; there are 52

to choose from, so they have created group wine tasting evenings which are going down very well with the corporate and business crowd. “The wine tasting events are a great way to try different wines in a social group,” says Laz. “We offer eight wines and pair them with food, such as Prosecco with anchovies, so it’s very much a drink and nibbles night for a minimum of 10 people. But it’s not just for businesses, it’s ideal for any group, a hen night, or family get-together. We have such a wide cross section of customers, so The Wallow appeals to everyone.” ■ The Wallow, 36 Exchange St, Norwich NR2 1AX t: 01603 446676 www.wallowwine.co.uk

Wuthering Heights Through the windows of a gloomy house two children stare longingly into the night awaiting the return of their father from the city. He will bring something home: a boy. His name will be Heathcliff and his arrival will spark a passionate story of obsessive love and violent revenge. For some he will prove to be a gift from God, for others a curse from the Devil. Emily Brontë’s passionate novel is wittily reimagined by Jo Clifford. Clifford is one of Britain’s greatest adaptors of fiction, and her play of Dickens ’ Great Expectations, a West End hit, was described by The Guardian as ‘a miracle of intelligent compression.’ Maddermarket Theatre Tickets from £13 www.maddermarket.co.uk

We need an everyman to bring people together using the most powerful tool we have - comedy. We need Stephen K Amos. He’s on a mission to bring about world peace. Or to at least bring about an evening of peace, one venue at a time. "It was 24th June 2016 and I found myself contemplating a supermarket meal deal. I only wanted a sandwich and I only needed a sandwich but given that I could get a snack and a drink for only 5p more it seemed financially irresponsible not to. I had spent so long pondering the EU Referendum result from the day before that I was now in a massive rush. The lad on the till scanned the first two items no problem but the third item he couldn’t get to scan at all. I thought this is going to be a

nightmare – there was a queue building up and he looked like he was going to call the supervisor. Then to his credit, he tried to scan it one more time, it wouldn’t scan – so he went ‘bip’ himself and chucked it through. And it was at that moment I thought 'oh we’ll be alright as a country we will'. And we will be alright. Trust me. I’m not a politician.". 7 MARCH

Shane Lutkin lead therapist at Emotionalskills

My City Life Shane Lutkin is lead therapist at Emotionalskills, a psychotherapy and counselling organisation that helps people manage anxiety, stress, depression, irritability and esteem issues. Shane’s own emotional distress led him down a path of self discovery and the development of a therapeutic model. He lives in Norwich and is married with two grown up children.

What do you love about Norwich? It’s a great city; the real heart of the county…all roads in Norfolk seem to lead to Norwich. It’s got history, two universities, culture, entertainment, restaurants, green space, pubs and sport. Norwich has all sorts of different kinds of people in terms of tastes and expression and I find them mostly very friendly. How do you support people with emotional issues? In theory, by helping them achieve greater self-awareness and showing them how to change their way of being so that they can try and find and become their true self. Guiding them to be acceptant without denying their core beliefs, trying to empathise with themselves and others and living more in the moment. But each client is

unique, and so are their troubles, and their way forward. How can we all strive for greater happiness? Be with other people. Share and be friendly. Give and do something for someone other than yourself. Use a contemplative mindful thought process to rationalise. Exercise, be curious, take up a new skill and learn or discover something new. Make time for things you enjoy and make time for doing nothing. How did therapy help you with your own depression? Mmm….depression is an often-misconstrued word. My psychological tension was a

cocktail of stress, frustration and low mood brought about by my living a life which I thought I should, ought or must be living and which boxed me up so much that eventually I collapsed. My recovery came about as I went through a process which I discovered, via education rather than specific therapy. My learning led to my writing and delivering a therapeutic model which clients confirm is effective, and it worked for me. Psychologically, I am more balanced, fulfilled and contented than I’ve ever been. What do you do when you're not working? I relax, which is something I couldn’t do in the past. I run, walk, read, listen to music, meet up with friends, go to the gym, watch TV, and see and talk to my family as much as I can… normal stuff. What are your hidden gems in the city? I live in the Golden Triangle area and I rate The Rose Tavern and The Warwick Street Social and Blue Joanna. I also like Wolf and Social and Bishops. Eaton Park is delightful. Visits to The Sainsbury Centre, gigs at the UEA and The Waterfront and just pottering around the city centre and the market take me away from myself. n
