Academics

A Note from the Principal: Welcome to 2019-2020! We are so excited with all that is happening with the Vanguard School academic program this year. As mentioned earlier, we are incredibly enthusiastic about the collaboratively taught 8th period Student Success Course, where we are bringing in staff mentors from the academic and residential departments to focus on topics of relevance to our students. This class has offered up some great opportunities for discussion, and we look forward to the class serving as a catalyst to instill the basic components of our Core Value Leadership Program: Leadership, Integrity, Community, Resilience, and Empathy. Our core academic classes continue to improve, with our small class sizes and individualized instruction to meet our students’ needs. Additionally, we are offering some new elective courses to our elective program this fall, including Mindfulness, Psychology, Musical Theater, and Introduction to Technology and Media. Our ACT Preparation for Students with Disabilities course showed wonderful gains in test scores during the spring, an average of 4 composite points, and we look forward to continued gains this fall. The Vanguard School faculty and staff are committed to the growth of the whole student, and we take our responsibility from the classrooms to the dormitories. Our 2019-2020 goal is to raise up leaders amongst our student body who embody our core values and enrich our Vanguard campus to be a place where all students are welcome and valued as members of the Vanguard Community. -Marya Marcum Jones

Athletics

SEPTEMBER WAS A BIG

MONTH FOR ATHLETICS!

On top of being an overall athlete, Susan Chen also received an award on her character. We are so lucky to have athletes like Susan representing Vanguard in such a positive light.

Stella placed second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free! Ryan Tuckwood also had an exciting day, placing third in his event, the 100 free. They have made such progress as a first year team, and with only a couple meets left, we can't wait to see what they can still achieve!

Palmer had a cross country meet this month and he showed us all the importance of never giving up! A coach reached out to our Athletic Director to compliment Palmer. "I didn't get the young man's name or bib number on Saturday, but he was wearing a knee brace and seemed to be struggling. In spite of his struggle, he kept going to the finish line and didn't quit or give up. I tried to cheer him on and encourage him along the course, and then specifically complimented him (along with a fist bump) after he finished.

"Sometimes not quitting is the best we can do in light of our circumstances, and I think his willingness to keep going in spite of difficulty will serve him well in life."."
