THE VANGUARD SCHOOL

Monthly Newsletter In this issue, we're covering: Our Vanguard Greenhouse Horse Therapy Musical Theater Culinary Banquet Ping Pong Tournament Basketball Archery

STARTING OFF THE YEAR WITH SOME BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY ACTION! ACADEMICS Students in Biology were cross pollinating plans and students in Chemistry made elephant toothpaste!

PLANT POLLINATION AND ELEPHANT TOOTHPASTE CONTINUED

What is pollination you ask? Pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma. The goal of every living organism, including plants, is to create offspring for the next generation.

Elephant toothpaste is the decomposition process of hydrogen peroxide, while yeast / potassium iodide works as a catalyst to break down the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. Soap will then mixed with the oxygen and water, which turn into foam.

Pictured above is Isaiah clearly very excited to make elephant toothpaste!

EQUINE THERAPY RESIDENTIAL Equine therapy is a treatment that promotes physical, occupational, and emotional growth in persons suffering from ADD, Anxiety, Autism, Depression and many other mental health problems. The Vanguard School has partnered with Nancy Slater Natural Horsemanship to allow our students to receive equine therapy at least once a week. The interesting thing about Nancy Slater's horses is they have suffered some emotional trauma and are also overcoming obstacles just like our students!

MUSICAL THEATER ACADEMICS

The musical theater department held auditions for an upcoming play in conjunction with one of our very own Vanguard School Board Members. The theater department is in the process of planning the play for this semester so stay tuned!

The Vanguard School will also be hosting a play next month about The Life of Eleanor Roosevelt.

ARTS & CULINARY ARTS ACADEMICS Students were taken to a community event called Unity for Community Lake Wales. The culinary arts students created the desserts for this community potluck dinner hosted by another one of our board members.

Pictured below are students making hygiene and hand-washing posters. Every once in a while Ms. Tysver likes to overlap both her arts and culinary arts classes. What better way to kill two birds with one stone?

BASKETBALL ATHLETICS JV athletics celebrated their first win of the semester by defeating All Saints. So a big congratulations to Coach Diego and the JV squad for their huge efforts and improvement.

Our Varsity squad has also been on winning streak lately defeating, All Saints on their turf along with Zephyrhills Christian, McKeel and Teneroc. We hope our boys will perform well in the district tournament! Goodluck to the boys and Coach Adam! Go Panthers!

ARCHERY ATHLETICS Qualities that make a great archer also make a great student. We are midway through the season and kids are learning focus and consistency while having fun on the range. Vanguard archers love being right on target!

Nate exemplifying his leadership qualities by showing Emmerson how to set up his bow.

DYER KIA DIFFERENCE AWARD COMMUNITY The Dyer Difference Award was created to recognize nonprofit organizations within Indian River, St. Lucie, and Polk Counties that make these communities a better place to live and work. Making a difference in the lives of our fellow citizens is a gift in and of itself. The Vanguard School was selected by Dyer Kia as a recipient this year, January 2020. Along with a wonderful plaque that was placed in our office, we received a generous donation by Dyer Kia that will go toward our newly modeled Harry Nelson Student Center.

Pictured below is our Principal, Marya Marcum-Jones, accepting the award on behalf of The Vanguard School. A huge thank you goes out to Dyer Kia for recognizing our school and believing in our mission. We are Vanguard!
