As city planners we were quite desperate until we have seen this:

And this is how Superblocks work
Is there a way to define Superblocks in Berlin? Well, we can not copy it, but we could do something similar. We call it: Kiezblocks

This is how the Bergmann-Kiez could look like as a Kiezblock The challenge Although there are 3 U-Bahn-Stops and a good Bus-Grid, streets are packed with parking cars. Currently 98% of all streets are Drive-Through Streets. The eastern part of the Bergmannstraße is a Bike-Street, but also a Drive-Thru Street. A short part of the Riemannstrasse is a popular pedestrianzone. How can we ensure, that delivery and „Anlieger“ can drive to their home or store and at the same transform this Kiez into a pedestrian and bike-friendly Kiezblock? The methods All streets are tranformed into one way roads, the other half of the Street will be designed for humans and green interventions. We peek the bike lane trough the Bergmannstrasse and make it a safe Bike Lane. We recommend to slow down the motorized traffic and reduce emission up to 50% by declaring the whole Kiez into a Tempo 20 Zone in which DriveThrough Cars are kept outside. Only neighbors, employees and delivery are allowed to come into the Kiez by cars at 6 defined car entry points (yellow) Mobility services To improve green mobilty we install various mobility hubs, where neihbors can share cars, cargobikes and tiny houses.
Let‘s have a closer look at Chamissoplatz
Chamissoplatz (Variante)
How to begin with: Pop-Up Playstreets (Temporäre Spielstrassen) They are easy to set up and help you 1. To define needs 2. To grow a Pro-community and 3. To enable magic moments. Next Page: Pop-Up Playstreet BÜckhstrasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg, open on Wednesdays.
Let‘s walk large with little steps. Say hello to Kiezblocks. Yours, Van Bo. This presentation is inspired by the amazing work of Changing Cities e.V.
