Es fácil, casi un tópico, hablar de calidad docente. Diría que se ha convertido en un recurso de la dimensión fáctica del lenguaje. Donde a nadie le importa el contenido del mensaje, porque se da la batalla por perdida. Cuando se invoca el término “calidad docente”, se hace con una pluralidad de significados tan vasta que calificarlo como la vaciedad por saturación parece un oxímoron benévolo.

Hay quien habla de calidad docente para encontrar explicación al fracaso escolar, al absentismo de las aulas, a la escasa vocación para cursar ingenierías, a la escasa competitividad de nuestros estudiantes de secundaria, al bajo nivel de competencias adquiridas en la etapa de la educación obligatoria, y si nos descuidamos, hasta a la violencia machista u otras excrecencias sociales.

En la Universidad, la calidad docente es harina de otro costal. Aquí el mapa de significados se acota y pendula desde la It’s easy, almost a cliché, to talk about teaching quality. I’d say that it’s a term we use in such a routine way that it’s become a cliché, almost a routine part of language, where nobody cares about the content of the message because they’ve given up fighting that battle. When somebody invokes the term “teaching quality” there are so many different meanings of it that it’s lost its significance.

Some people point to teaching quality when trying to explain academic failure, absenteeism from class, a lack of interest in studying engineering, a lack of competitiveness among our secondary school students, the fact that they learn so little during their obligatory education, and even male violence and other social disfigurements.

La calidad docente no es un juego de blancos y negros, como casi nada en nuestras vidas. La calidad docente se consigue cuando el docente está en tensión con los más recientes avances de su disciplina en su doble dimensión objetiva y adjetiva. Es decir, cuando conoce la vanguardia del conocimiento y los avances en la transmisión de ese conocimiento. Por eso, el docente de calidad debe mantener la tensión con la investigación y, además, la tensión con la comunicación en el aula.

Like almost everything in life, quality teaching is not a question of black and white. It is achieved when the teacher is right up to date with the most recent advances in his subject, both objectively and adjectively. In other words, when he knows the latest information and advances in imparting that knowledge. That is why a quality teacher should be able to balance research and classroom teaching.

Si añadimos la empatía, el respeto profundo por cada uno de nuestros estudiantes, el respeto a la diversidad, el fomento de la igualdad y la multiculturalidad, la inclusión de las personas con capacidades diferentes y el rechazo del sarcasmo y la ironía, habremos abrazado los factores clave para concretar qué elementos configuran la calidad docente.

En esta línea trabajamos en nuestra Universidad. Los profesores de la UE queremos caracterizarnos, ser reconocibles, por poner en práctica todos estos elementos; ese concepto holístico de calidad. En esta senda tenemos que seguir avanzando para estar en la vanguardia de la docencia del siglo XXI, por el bien de nuestros estudiantes y de nuestra sociedad.

Only the teacher who considers his classroom to be a collaborative setting for learning, and is committed to shaping his students, is able to provide quality teaching. If to this we add empathy, a deep respect for each student, respect for diversity, the promotion of equality and multiculturalism, the inclusion of people with different capacities, and a rejection of sarcasm and irony… we will have embraced the key factors of teaching quality.

This is the way we work at Universidad Europea. We professors want to put all these elements into practice, in a holistic concept of quality. It is in this direction that we must continue to advance so as to be in the forefront of 21st-century teaching, for the good of our students and our society.

La gestión hospitalaria en tiempos revueltos —Hospital management in turbulent times

Los países desarrollados llevan décadas preocupados por la sostenibilidad de los sistemas sanitarios. El gasto en salud crece a medida que los países se desarrollan y se preocupan por mejorar su bienestar, pero diversos factores contribuyen decisivamente en este crecimiento continuo del gasto sanitario: 1. Crecimiento, evolución y difusión acelerada de la tecnología sanitaria.

La tecnología sanitaria, técnicas diagnósticas y terapéuticas y nuevos procedimientos han contribuido de un modo determinante a la mejora de la salud de la población.

2. Incremento de la demanda y la utilización de servicios.

Esto se debe a tres factores: • El envejecimiento de la población, un factor muy importante de incremento del gasto en los países desarrollados: aumenta la probabilidad de desarrollar una enfermedad crónica y conlleva mayores costes de cuidado de la salud.

• El incremento de enfermedades crónicas y degenerativas. Los cuidados de salud han mejorado, lo que supone que más personas se convierten en enfermos crónicos y dependientes de los servicios de salud. Esto se suma a algunas enfermedades propias del desarrollo como la obesidad, el sedentarismo o el tabaquismo.

• Las mayores expectativas de la población, por la mejora relativa del concepto de calidad de vida y una menor tolerancia a la enfermedad.

3. Otros como el incremento del gasto farmacéutico, la ineficacia de los modelos administrativos, etc.

En este entorno complejo, el hospital tiene que dar respuesta de forma eficaz y eficiente a las necesidades de salud de los ciudadanos. Los gestores de hospitales deben gestionar una organización muy compleja en este entorno de inestabilidad financiera, de recursos limitados y reducidos y de expectativas sociales elevadas.

¿Qué hacer y cómo será el hospital en el futuro?

-El hospital tendrá que encontrar entre los profesionales a sus principales aliados, y los gestores deberán ser líderes que dirigen líderes, para lograr equipos organizados, orientados a procesos y con modelos de atención integrada. Estos equipos multidisciplinares romperían las actuales estructuras estanco de unidades y servicios, no orientadas a los procesos.

-Se deberá trabajar la figura de gestores de casos, que conecten al paciente con el resto del equipo. Además de seguir desarrollando los procesos ambulatorios, haciendo del hospital un lugar de cuidados.

-Se crearán hospitales informatizados, digitalizados, que se apoyen en las nuevas tecnologías como el Big Data para la toma de decisiones clínicas.

-Será necesario gestionar la cronicidad, desplazar los servicios poco complejos a otros niveles de atención (primaria,

For decades now the developed countries have worried about sustaining their health systems. Spending on healthcare increases as countries become more prosperous and concerned about improving their wellbeing, but different factors contribute decisively to this continued increased spending on health: 1. Growth, development and increased spread of health technology.

Health technology, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and new procedures have contributed decisively to improving the health of the general population.

2. Increasing demand for, and use of, services.

This is because of three factors:

El papel fundamental de la autoridad sanitaria es sensibilizar e implicar a los ciudadanos para que hagan un uso adecuado de los recursos de salud y se involucren en las medidas de prevención y autocuidado de su salud.

• The ageing of the population is a very important factor in the rise in expenses in the developed countries: it increases the possibility of developing a chronic disease, and means higher costs in health care.

• The increase in chronic and degenerative diseases. Healthcare has improved, which means that more people are becoming chronic patients who depend on health services. To this must be added some diseases common to developed countries such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle or tobacco use.

• People have a greater expectation that medicine will cure them because there has been an improvement in the quality of life, and they are less tolerant about accepting disease.

3. Other factors such as an increase in spending on medicine, the ineffectiveness of administrative models, etc.

In this complex setting, hospitals have to respond effectively and efficiently to peoples’ health needs. Hospitals must manage complex organizations in a setting of financial instability, limited and reduced resources, and higher expectations by society.

What can we do, and what will the hospital of the future be like?

-The hospital will find its principal allies from among the health professionals, and the managers should be leaders who direct leaders so as to create organized teams that carry out processes of integrated patient attention. These multidisciplinary teams will break down the current compartmentalized structures of units and services, which are not oriented toward these new processes.

-There should be more case workers to connect the patient with the rest of the team. Beside continuing to develop outpatient procedures, they should make the hospital a place for care.

-Computerized, digitalized hospitals will be created, and will use new technologies such as Big Data when making clinical decisions.

-It will be necessary to manage care for chronic patients, and move less complex services to other levels (primary care, district hospitals, clinics, etc). Broaden the role of nurses in instructing patients about health and prevention. Bring treatment to patients and favor their access to less specialized health centers. Gain the support of patients’ associations.

-It is important to provide services that patients and their families consider to be excellent. Manage in an ongoing and direct way the quality of these processes and services.

-Finally, it is necessary to have hospital managers who are effective and involved and are able to lead in difficult times so as to achieve the dedication of the professionals, without whom all this is not possible.

The fundamental role of health authorities is to make citizens aware and involve them so that they will make adequate use of the health resources and take part in measures for prevention and self-care.

El futuro arquitectónico de nuestros centros de salud —The architectural future of our health centers

gases de efecto invernadero por metro cuadrado. Convertir estos bloques en edificios de consumo casi nulo es uno de los retos planteados por la Unión Europea (Directiva Europea 2010/31).

Por otro lado, según las estadísticas de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, una media del 8,7% de los pacientes de un hospital presenta infecciones nosocomiales o intrahospitalarias (las contraídas por pacientes ingresados en un recinto de atención como resultado de su permanencia en el hospital).

Así pues, la Comisión Europea ha determinado que los hospitales deben cumplir la norma UNE 171340, que especifica los parámetros a tener en cuenta para que la instalación de climatización de estas zonas críticas garantice el suministro de aire ambiental de calidad.

Las claves para la superación de estos objetivos tan ambiciosos pasa por un análisis exhaustivo de las frecuencias de ocupación (mediante la utilización de metadatos) así como un control de la calidad del aire a todos sus niveles: energético, CO2, componentes orgánicos volátiles y microorganismos.

Ante la ausencia de una trasposición nacional, la edificación es ejemplar en la aplicación de la Directiva Europea 2010/31: se tratará de un edificio de consumo casi nulo, e incluso el proyecto contempla ya las normas que serán necesarias para regularlo.

La obtención de estas metas nos otorgaría centros de salud donde se minimizarían los riesgos de contraer nuevas enfermedades y que serían extremadamente confortables sin que esto suponga una hipoteca energética para nuestra sociedad.

The medium-term future of our health centers and hospitals is already being designed in countries like Germany, Austria and Spain.

Normally, these constructions, besides consuming a great deal of energy –some 22% more than other buildings– emit the greatest amount of greenhouse gasses per square meter. Making these blocks into buildings that consume almost nothing is one of the challenges posed by the European Union (European Directive 2010/31).

In addition, according to statistics of the World Health Organization, an average 8.7% of patients in a hospital have healthcare-associated or in-hospital infections (those acquired as a result of their stay in the hospital).

The European Commission has thus determined that hospitals must comply with Norm UNE 171340, which lays out the requirements that should be met for air-conditioning in these critical areas so that it will guarantee quality air.

To meet these very ambitious aims there must be an exhaustive analysis of occupancy (by using meta-data) as well as a control of air quality at all levels: energy, CO2, volatile organic compounds and micro-organisms.

A good example of this is the new health center that’s being built in Lodosa by architect Sara Velázquez Arizmendi and the Navarra Regional Government. Given the lack of Spanish legislation on the subject, the builders applied European Directive 2010/31: it will consume almost nothing, and already contains the norms that will be necessary to regulate it.

Meeting these goals would give us health centers where the risk of contracting new diseases would be minimal. They would also be very comfortable without adding any energy costs to society.

El paciente en el centro de la asistencia sanitaria —The patient in health centers

En nuestro país, disfrutamos de uno de los mejores sistemas públicos de salud del mundo, que da cobertura asistencial de urgencia a todo individuo que lo requiere y cubre las patologías más diversas, complicadas y caras para todos sus asegurados. Representa uno de los pilares fundamentales de nuestro estado de bienestar y debe evolucionar hacia la mejora, teniendo en cuenta los cambios que se vienen produciendo en las últimas décadas con respecto a avances tecnológicos, cambios demográficos y de morbilidad, sin perder de vista el coste económico que conlleva.

El paciente debe ser el máximo beneficiario. No podemos centrar el objetivo en las enfermedades; debemos ir mucho más allá y conseguir situar al paciente en el centro del sistema sanitario y de nuestros esfuerzos.

Con una esperanza de vida en alza, una población cada vez más envejecida y un aumento de las enfermedades crónicas, debemos utilizar todas las armas que la tecnología pone a nuestro alcance para dar soporte de forma integral al paciente. La tecnología nos aporta inteligencia artificial y Big Data para diagnóstico de diferentes enfermedades, genómica personalizada e incluso aplicaciones que permiten el seguimiento y control de los pacientes en su propio domicilio.

Los diagnósticos y los tratamientos son cada vez más personalizados y de gran precisión, pero nuestra preocupación debe ir dirigida a la atención del paciente y su entorno psicosocial y familiar.

La superespecialización nos permitirá acercarnos a las enfermedades de una forma más exacta y precisa, algo en otro tiempo impensable para nuestra sociedad, pero no debe alejarnos de los problemas que aquejan al individuo en el día a día y a su entorno más cercano.

La asistencia sanitaria centrada en el paciente tiene como elemento clave la atención de sus preferencias y necesidades, permitiendo que, además de ser adecuada, resulte eficaz. Para poder conocer esas preferencias, es necesario incluir al paciente en las políticas sanitarias, de tal manera que pueda tener voz y voto en la toma de decisiones relacionadas con la gestión sanitaria, habiendo recibido la formación e información adecuadas previamente.

Todo esto le permitiría gestionar su enfermedad o, mejor aún, su salud, tomar decisiones sobre su proceso y evaluar la atención recibida. El sistema sanitario podrá, de esta manera, entender y atender sus necesidades de una forma más integrada.

In Spain we enjoy one of the world’s best public health systems, which provides urgent care to anyone needing it, and treats the most diverse, complicated and expensive diseases for all its patients. It represents one of the basic pillars of our welfare state and –taking

into account the changes that have been occurring in recent decades with regard to technological advances, demographic and morbidity rates– should be improved without neglecting the economic cost that all this involves. The patient should be the greatest beneficiary. We can’t just concentrate on the diseases but should go much further and make the patient the center of the health system and of our efforts.

With rising life expectancy and an increase in chronic diseases, we should use all the weapons that technology places at our disposal to treat patients in an integral way. Technology provides us with artificial intelligence and Big Data to diagnose different diseases, personalized genomics and even applications that permit the tracking and control of patients in their homes.

Diagnoses and treatments are increasingly personalized and precise, but our concern should be directed at caring for the patient and his family and psychosocial surroundings. Intense specialization will allow us to approach ailments in a more exact and precise way, something that would have previously been inconceivable for our society, but this should not divorce us from the problems that each individual suffers day-to-day and that affect the people closest to him.

A key element of health care that is centered around the patient is attention to his preferences and needs, which should be adequately and effectively met. To be able to know those preferences, it is necessary to include the patient in health policies, so that he can have a say in taking decisions related to health management, having first received the adequate training and information. All this will allow him to manage his ailment or, better still, his overall health so as to make decisions about his process and evaluate the attention received. In this way the health system will be able to understand his needs and meet them in a more integrated way.

El mal del diálogo tecnológico, directo a Urgencias —The evil of technological dialogue: straight to the Emergency Room

Un centro sanitario puede estar muy bien dotado tecnológicamente, pero si no existe una óptima comunicación con los pacientes, todo ese avance servirá de poco. Para que la comunicación sea más efectiva, hay que poner en práctica el arte de saber hablar… ¡Y el de saber escuchar! Pero parece que esta enseñanza del estoico Epicteto de Frigia está en desuso. Para prosperar debemos estar del lado de la tecnología, de su recabación y gestión de datos. Pero siempre y cuando haya feedback. Para tal fin, se necesita un receptor dinámico que escuche y sea escuchado. Que colabore en la mejora de la máquina discursiva.

Esa escucha activa depende de factores muy simples que a veces se evaporan entre tanta conexión desconectada. Lewis Mumford vaticinaba que toda técnica podría producir brecha. Él quiso distinguir dos tecnologías: la democrática y la autoritaria. En la primera estarían los avances que generan las herramientas que mejo-

ran la naturaleza humana. En la segunda, se encontrarían las que atentan contra las personas. Pero la tecnología democrática, que está auspiciada por internet, a veces se torna en autoritaria porque, desgraciadamente, aún no está al alcance de todos.

Uno de los desafíos más importantes que tiene la globalización es salvar la brecha digital generacional. Mark Zuckerberg, en una conferencia pronunciada en mayo de 2017, dijo que no solo había que crear nuevos puestos de trabajo, sino que también había que renovar el sentido del propósito colectivo. Y cuando se habla de colectivo, se refiere a todo en su conjunto y no solo a una de las partes.

Los centros hospitalarios son lugares de interconexión y reclutamiento de datos que se analizan con el fin de prevenir o sanar enfermedades o dolencias a futuro.

El problema es que parece que no todos los seres humanos cuentan. Un estudio publicado en 2017 por la Universitat

Politècnica de València –Evaluating the Social Media Performance of Hospitals in Spain: A Longitudinal and Comparative Study– ha revelado que entre 2011 y 2015 la presencia de los hospitales en la Red aumentó más del 450%. Eso es un dato muy positivo, pero ¿dónde quedan nuestros mayores que no tienen ni Twitter ni Facebook? Según datos del INE, en 2016, el 18,4% de la población era mayor de 65 años. De ellos, solo el 35% usaba internet. ¿Dejamos fuera de la conversación al 65% restante? ¿No debemos cuidar de toda la ciudadanía sin exclusiones? Se hace mucho hincapié en lo digital, pero el mundo físico todavía existe, así que seamos sensatos y responsables con los dos entornos de diálogo: el físico y el virtual. Y, sobre todo, tengamos en cuenta que reparar este daño no compete solo a las autoridades sanitarias. Es una tarea de todos que deberíamos haber comenzado hace mucho tiempo. Se suele decir en medicina que más vale prevenir que curar. Pero ahora, desgraciadamente, por

no haber tenido en cuenta todo este nuevo diálogo tecnológico, este mal, para ser sanado, va a tener que pasar directamente por Urgencias.

Imagine that you only had one item of clothing, a long-sleeved wetsuit, which is your protection day and night. It safeguards you from the rain and is easy to wash. It’s black and so absorbs plenty of heat, which is pleasant in winter but unbearable in summer. No air gets to your skin, sweat stays inside, the fabric’s not breathable. But it’s useful for getting around, you can move freely in it. What’s more, if everyone dressed the same way, you could only tell us apart by our complexion, face and hair.

Imagine a city with tarmac and plenty of buildings, where 80% of the surface area is sealed off. It’s our habitat day and night.

Ordinary rainfall is handled relatively well, but a storm causes problems. The tarmac is black and, as such, is pleasant in winter,

unbearable in summer. It’s not breathable, just bounces back the heat, but helps us to travel around “comfortably.” It manages to make every city look similar, only their shapes and architectures are different.

Neoprene’s functionality is designed for specific situations. Wearing it 24 hours a day is inhuman. So why do we have cities designed with only one functionality in mind: motorised mobility. The result is that our cities are less human. A sustainable city is an environment where human beings are the benchmarks and reference points when designing different spaces. Where tree coverage has an eco-function (shade, cool, protection, colors, aromas).

Where residents can open the windows of their homes and let fresh air inside.

Where streets act as filters and the car is no longer a privately owned object but a service provided for the public. A sustainable city is a city that serves human beings in all their diversity.

Cities combine two spaces: empty, comprised of common areas and, to a great extent, public space; and full, occupied by buildings, architecture, the places where we live and work. It is not only the empty space that requires an overhaul, however. At building level, the full space also needs a transformation towards sustainability: more shared and common areas, lower energy consumption, greater flexibility in building usage, larger green areas in patios and atriums, health-conscious and recyclable materials, and greater capacity to light and ventilate homes naturally. Sustainable building doesn't depend on machines to ensure day-today comfort, nor does it rely on largescale infrastructures that require significant maintenance and energy to work.

It’s an approach to building that allows places to transform over time and provide a service to people, while housing an enormous range of different activities and lifestyles.

Rebeca Grynspan, Secretaria General Iberoamericana, se convierte en Doctora Honoris Causa —Rebeca Grynspan, Iberoamerican Secretary General, “doctor honoris causa”

El 17 de enero se celebró el acto de investidura como Doctora Honoris Causa por la Universidad Europea de Rebeca Grynspan, Secretaria General Iberoamericana. Recibió este reconocimiento por su trayectoria y compromiso con los ciudadanos de Iberoamérica.

Tal y como señaló José María Peredo, catedrático de Comunicación y Política Internacional, “Grynspan es una de las figuras más destacadas de los últimos años por su trayectoria profesional”.

Antes de la ceremonia de investidura, la homenajeada participó en un encuentro con más de una treintena de estudiantes del Grado en Relaciones Internacionales. La Secretaria General Iberoamericana respondió a las

preguntas de los asistentes sobre los objetivos del SEGIB, la movilidad internacional, el futuro de los jóvenes iberoamericanos y la cooperación, entre otros temas.

In the words of José María Peredo, professor of Communication and International Politics, “Grynspan is one of the most outstanding figures of recent years for her professional career.”

Before the ceremony, Grynspan took part in a gathering of more than 30 students in the International Relations program. She answered their questions about, among other topics, the aims of the SEGIB (Ibero-American General Secretariat), international mobility, the future of young Latin Americans, and cooperation.

For a few months now the players on Real Madrid’s basketball team have been wearing jerseys whose front bears the logo of Universidad Europea. This agreement between the two entities reinforces the relationship that began in 2016 with the Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid - Universidad Europea.

This sponsorship, between a club that’s known the world over and an educational institution, has a clear global intent. In the words of Conrado Briceño, Director General of Universidad Europea, “both institutions share values that come together in this sponsorship in four fundamental aspects: effort, honesty, teamwork and winning spirit.” For his part, the president of Real Madrid C.F., Florentino Pérez, stresses that this “strategic alliance united two institutions that believe in the power of sport and are convinced that education is the essential engine that should propel a more just society.”

Con el encuentro internacional Youth and Education, agents of social change se dio clausura a la Semana de Emprendimiento Social. Celebrado por primera vez en España, el Laureate Global Fellows galardona anualmente a emprendedores sociales de todo el mundo.

En esta edición estuvieron presentes 20 jóvenes de 17 países; entre ellos, la española Cristina Balbás, premio JES 2016 por su proyecto Escuelab. Los participantes concluyeron que juventud, globalidad y educación son los principales actores de un cambio social.

Semana del Emprendimiento Social Del 2 al 9 de octubre de 2017 los campus de Alcobendas y Villaviciosa de Odón acogieron la IX edición de los Premios Jóvenes Emprendedores Sociales (JES) y el encuentro internacional Youth and Education, agents of social change, con los galardonados en el programa Laureate Global Fellows 2017.

En los Premios JES se reconoció el trabajo de diez jóvenes, de entre 18 y 29 años, que lideran proyectos de transformación social y protección del medio ambiente. From October 2 to 9, 2017, the campuses at Alcobendas and Villaviciosa de Odón hosted the ninth edition of the Young Social Entrepreneurs (JES) prizes and the ‘Youth and Education, agents of social change’ international gathering, with the prizewinners in the Laureate Global Fellows 2017 program.

cial transformation and environmental protection. The founder of Adopta un Abuelo (‘Adopt a Grandfather’), Alberto Cabanes, received the Jury’s Special Mention, while David Rodríguez, creator of Pegasus Sport, received the Mention for the Project with the Greatest Digital Impact on Twitter.

With these prizes, Universidad Europea offers entrepreneurs the chance to present their projects and high-level training so that they can continue to launch initiatives with social impact that benefit their communities.

The ‘Youth and Education, agents of social change’ gathering brought to a close the Social Entrepreneurship Week. Held for the first time in Spain, the Laureate Global Fellows gathering annually rewards social entrepreneurs from all over the world. In this edition there were 20 young people from 17 countries, among them Spaniard Cristina Balbás, who won the JES 2016 prize for her Escuelab project. Participants concluded that youth, globalization and education are the principal elements in social change.

Last October 18 the campus in Villaviciosa de Odón was the setting to celebrate Juan Morote Sarrión taking up his post as the new Dean of Universidad Europea de Madrid.

El pasado 18 de octubre de 2017, en el campus de Villaviciosa de Odón, se celebró la toma de posesión de Juan Morote Sarrión como nuevo rector de la Universidad Europea de Madrid.

Morote Sarrión es doctor en Derecho por la Universitat de València, MBA Executive y cuenta con una amplia trayectoria en la gestión y dirección de diversas instituciones educativas. Había ocupado, hasta la fecha, el mismo puesto en la Universidad Europea de Valencia y antes había sido gerente y vicerrector de Planificación Estratégica y Calidad de la Universidad Católica de Valencia y director Instituto de Estudios Estratégicos Internacionales, entre otros cargos de responsabilidad dentro de dicha institución. Anteriormente, ejerció el cargo de vicedecano de

Morote Sarrión has a doctorate degree in Law from the Universitat de València and an Executive MBA and has had considerable experience in managing different educational institutions. Until his designation he had occupied the same position at the Universidad Europea de Valencia, and before that he had been manager and Vice-Rector for Strategic Planning and Quality at the Universidad Católica de Valencia and director of the Institute for International Strategic Studies, among other positions at this institution. Before that he was Vice-Dean in the School of Social, Judicial and Communications Sciences at the Cardenal Herrera CEU University in Valencia.

En 2017 lo volvió a renovar y pasa a formar parte de las casi 450 entidades españolas que actualmente cuentan con un Sello de Excelencia Europea EFQM. During the IV Universidad Europea Excellence Day, the Club Excelencia en Gestión –which was invited to the event as official representative in Spain of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM)– renewed UE’s European Seal of Excellence EFQM 500+. Sergio Calvo, Vice-Rector of Support for Teaching and Research of Universidad Europea, collected the award. He said that “this Seal shows once again our absolute conviction of the power of education to generate change.”

In 2015, Universidad Europea achieved this recognition for the first time in its highest grade, 500+, thus becoming the first private university in Spain to receive this Seal.

In 2017 it renewed the distinction and is now one of 450 Spanish organizations that have a Europea EFQM Seal of Excellence.

El movimiento B Corporation reconoce a las mejores compañías que contribuyen a que la sociedad camine hacia estadios de bienestar compartido. La Universidad Europea tiene el honor de formar parte de esta comunidad formada por 2.300 empresas de 50 países y 130 sectores.

B Corp Spain organizó el evento anual B Good Day 2017 con todas las empresas españolas certificadas como B Corp en España. En total son unas 40 entre las que destacan Danone, Triodos Bank o Veritas.

Durante el B Good Day, celebrado 7 de noviembre de 2017, se organizaron tres mesas de debate orientadas a lograr cambios organizativos hacia la sostenibilidad.

También se habló de liderazgo y cultura de cambio organizacional; nuevos modelos de trabajo y de relación laboral y modelos financieros con impacto social positivo.

The B Corporation movement recognizes the best companies that help society move toward periods of shared wellbeing. Universidad Europea has the honor of being part of this community, which is made up of 2,300 firms from 130 different sectors in 50 countries.

B Corp Spain organized the annual B Good Day event in 2017 with all the companies that are certified in Spain as B Corp. There are some 40 of them, outstanding of which are Danone, Triodos Bank and Veritas.

During the B Good Day, held on November 7, there were three round table discussions aimed at achieving organizational changes toward greater sustainability. El ministro de Justicia inaugura el curso académico de la Escuela de Abogados —The minister of Justice opens the academic year at the Law School

El acto de apertura del curso académico de la Escuela de Abogados de la Universidad Europea y el despacho de abogados Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo contó con la presencia del ministro de Justicia, Rafael Catalá y la presencia de la decana del Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Madrid, Sonia Gumpert, el presidente del bufete, Javier Cremades, y la decana de la Facultad de Comunicación y Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad Europea, Marta Muñiz.

Los asistentes pudieron conocer de primera mano esta iniciativa destinada a formar abogados técnicamente excelentes que aporten soluciones complejas a los problemas actuales de las empresas y de las personas. Los futuros profesionales del Derecho contarán con una formación de Postgrado dual y una inmersión plena en el ejercicio profesional de alto nivel, haciendo prácticas en el propio despacho junto con prestigiosos y experimentados juristas nacionales e internacionales.

Además, la Escuela de Abogados plantea un nuevo sistema que capacita a los estudiantes para trabajar como abogados desde el primer día, habilitándolos para

el ejercicio internacional, permitiéndoles adquirir las técnicas y habilidades inherentes a la práctica profesional y capacitándolos para afrontar con éxito los retos más actuales del ejercicio de la abogacía.

The opening ceremony for the academic year at the Universidad Europea Law School and Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo law firm was attended by the Justice minister, Rafael Catalá; the dean of the Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Madrid, Sonia Gumpert; the president of Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo, Javier Cremades; and the dean of the School of Communication and Social Sciences of Universidad Europea, Marta Muñiz.

Those in attendance could discover firsthand this initiative, which is aimed at training technically excellent lawyers who will provide complex solutions to the current problems of companies and individuals. These future legal professionals will enjoy a dual postgraduate training and full immersion in high-level professional work: they will do their training in a law firm beside prestigious and experienced Spanish and international jurists.

In addition the Law School is applying a new system that prepares the students to work as lawyers in the international field from day one. It allows them to acquire the techniques and skills inherent to professional practice, with the capacity to successfully meet current challenges in the exercise of their profession.

Sergio Scariolo participa en la presentación de la Escuela de Postgrado de la Universidad Europea de Valencia —Sergio Scariolo takes part in the presentation of the Postgraduate School of Universidad Europea in Valencia

Para la presentación de los programas para el curso 2017-2018 de la Escuela de Postgrado de la Universidad Europea de Valencia, se contó con la presencia del seleccionador nacional de baloncesto, Sergio Scariolo. En el acto, celebrado en el salón de actos de la Fundación Bancaja, el técnico italiano dio una conferencia denominada La preparación como clave del éxito.

“Hay que ser coherente para dar ejemplo delante de tu gente. ¿Quieres entu-

siasmo? Transmite entusiasmo. ¿Quieres energía? Transmite energía. Pero no te permitas tener días malos: si exijo lo máximo es porque yo doy lo máximo”, dijo durante la presentación.

El técnico recordó sus comienzos como estudiante y demostró el agradecimiento que siente hacia sus padres, que siempre le inculcaron el valor de los estudios porque “nunca se sabe lo que el deporte te puede ofrecer. Y eso se lo digo yo a mis hijos, que se quieren dedicar al deporte profesionalmente, porque nunca sabemos qué sucederá”.

The coach recalled his beginnings as a student and spoke of the gratitude he feels to his parents, who always instilled in him the value of studying because “you never know what sport can offer you. And that’s what I say to my children, who want to be professional athletes, because we never know what will happen.”

El 16 de diciembre se celebró el 25 aniversario del Parque Juan Carlos I con la presencia de sus arquitectos y la presentación de un libro que recoge su dimensión histórica y cultural. Al evento, organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Madrid, asistió José Luis Esteban Penelas, catedrático de Arquitectura de la Universidad Europea, encargado de diseñar y ejecutar el proyecto del emblemático parque de Barajas y uno de los autores del libro titulado Parque Juan Carlos I. La Puerta de Madrid.

La publicación recoge toda la información sobre el primer gran parque del Madrid contemporáneo así como contenidos inéditos o bocetos realizados por el propio José Luis Esteban. “En el

Students, professors, alumni and employees expressed their commitment of solidarity to local communities. On October 21, during the Solidarity Day for Companies, a great number of volunteers had the chance to cooperate with different groups that are at risk of social exclusion, such as people with disabilities, the homeless, the elderly, or sick children.

There were also Leaders for Change events. One of them, part of the Here For Good spirit, dealt with diversity and inclusion through the testimony and experience of students, professors and leaders who are making a positive impact on their communities.

La medicina es una de las ciencias que más han evolucionado en las últimas décadas y los hospitales son su mayor exponente. Desde los antiguos asilos de enfermos hasta los recintos tan modernos con los que contamos a día de hoy en los que las nuevas tecnologías mejoran la calidad de las consultas, los diagnósticos y los tratamientos de cada paciente. Y parece que el futuro de los centros médicos es todavía más prometedor: edificios pequeños diseñados para una experiencia más cercana y amable, atención personalizada e integral con equipos de profesionales de diferentes especialidades trabajando juntos y una importante presencia de tecnologías que ayudarán a aumentar su fiabilidad y eficiencia. Incluso veremos a pacientes que no precisan acudir al hospital porque están atendidos y monitorizados en tiempo real desde su hogar.

La medicina y los hospitales evolucionarán, como han hecho hasta ahora, para poder ofrecer un mejor servicio y cumplir con las demandas y necesidades de la sociedad.

En el futuro, la sanidad tendrá que hacer frente a un fuerte crecimiento de la población y a un alto porcentaje de personas mayores que viven más. Sin embargo, el principal motor de cambio serán las nuevas tecnologías que dotarán a los profesionales de herramientas para hacer mejor su trabajo y transformarán el paradigma de la medicina haciendo más hincapié en la predicción y prevención de enfermedades.

Tal y como señala Pedro Serrano, Presidente de la Red Española de Agencias de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias y Prestaciones del Sistema Nacional de Salud (RedETS), “el desarrollo de las tecnologías sanitarias proporciona oportunidades adicionales de gran valor para que los profesionales sanitarios puedan ofrecer a los pacientes mayores cotas de efectividad y seguridad; junto a una mejora en la autonomía y calidad de vida percibida por los enfermos”.

Medicine is one of the sciences that has developed the most in recent decades, and the best example of this is hospitals.

From those old asylums for the sick to today’s very modern centers where new technologies improve consultation, diagnosis and treatment for each patient.

And the future of these places looks even more promising: small buildings designed for a more intimate, friendly experience; personalized, integral attention with teams of professionals in different specialties who work together; and an important number of technologies that will help improve reliability and efficiency. There will even be patients who don’t need to go to a hospital because they will be looked after and monitored in real time from their home.

Just as they have done so to date, medicine and hospitals will evolve so as to offer better service and satisfy society’s demands and needs. In the future, health care will have to meet a large increase in the population because of a higher percentage of older people who live longer. But the principal motor for change will be the new technologies that will provide professionals with the tools to do their work better and will change the paradigm of medicine, placing greater emphasis on the prediction and prevention of disease.

According to Pedro Serrano, president of the Spanish Network of Health Technology Assessment Agencies of the National Health System (RedETS in Spanish), “the development of health technologies provides very important additional opportunities so that health professionals can offer patients greater effectiveness and safety, along with an improvement in autonomy and quality of life for the patients.”

Telemedicine and robotics are only some of the advances that are being made in the hospitals of many countries. But there still remains much to do in Spain. Borja Rodríguez, assistant professor in Universidad Europea’s Biomed-

ical Engineering program, says that “while robots may be more spectacular when it comes to making news, we’ll see the greatest advances through an increase in the use of artificial intelligence.” One application of this technology being introduced to the market is the artificial pancreas, a system of automatic control that carries out the functions of this organ to regulate glucose levels in blood in patients with type 1 diabetes. It functions by means of an algorithm that releases insulin into the body when levels are low, and it’s controlled by means of a smartphone.

Medicine and technology will go hand in hand

Another one of the technologies that will bring a big change in the medical sector –and which will be common in hospitals of the future– is Big Data. It has great potential in medicine because it permits the collection, storing, ordering, analysis and consultation of a huge volume of information in a structured, safe way. The result: attention that is more effective, personalized, participative, preventive and predictive.

Doctors will be able to use programs to calculate the probability that a disease will appear or progress, carry out early diagnosis, make decisions based on real data…

According to Borja Rodríguez, “in the future, if a diagnosis is made or a treatment is undertaken without consulting a system that helps make decisions, medical malpractice will be considered.”

Wearable biosensors are devices capable of maintaining complete control of vital signs, and will have special importance in the future. They can obtain data and monitor patients in real time, whether they are in a hospital or at their own home. It is also believed that they will be fundamental when it comes to detecting ahead of time certain episodes that could endanger a person’s health, for example in the case of epileptics. Knowing the symptoms that precede an epileptic attack, these devices can detect them and warn a patient and his specialist doctor of the danger.

As this professor of Biomedical Engineering expresses it, “medicine is an area that is increasingly dependent upon technology, both for diagnostic tests and for monitoring and follow-up treatment, and it develops to the degree that new advances and solutions are offered. We can be sure that medicine as we know it today will have little to do with the medicine that our grandchildren will know.”

Indeed, some hospitals around the world are already implementing rather innovative technologies. At the Humber River Hospital in Toronto, automated robots move through the corridors to deliver supplies to the staff. And in the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, a network of pneumatic tubes connects every point in the hospital, thus speeding up the system and making it possible that a patient can carry out tests and receive a diagnosis in a single day.

La telemedicina o la robótica son solo algunos de los avances que se están introduciendo en los hospitales de muchos países. Sin embargo, aún nos queda mucho por ver. Borja Rodríguez, profesor adjunto en el grado de Ingeniería Biomédica de la Universidad Europea, opina que “aunque los robots sean más espectaculares a la hora de dar noticias, la mayor evolución la veremos con el incremento del uso de la inteligencia artificial”. Una aplicación de esta tecnología que ya se está introduciendo en el mercado es el páncreas artificial, un sistema de control automático que realiza las funciones de este órgano para regular los niveles de glucosa en sangre en enfermos de diabetes de tipo 1. Funciona a través de un algoritmo que libera insulina en el cuerpo cuando los niveles son bajos y se controla a través de un smartphone.

Medicina y tecnología irán de la mano Otra de las tecnologías que impulsará un gran cambio en el sector médico y que estará a la orden del día en los hospitales del futuro es el Big Data. Su potencial en la medicina es amplísimo ya que permite recoger, almacenar, cribar, analizar y consultar de manera estructurada y segura un gran volumen de datos. Esto dará como resultado una atención más eficaz, personalizada, participativa, preventiva y predictiva. Los médicos podrán utilizar programas para calcular la probabilidad de aparición o progresión de una enfermedad, realizar diagnósticos tempranos, tomar decisiones basadas en datos reales…

Según apunta Borja Rodríguez, “en el futuro se considerará mala práctica médica no consultar a un sistema de ayuda a la decisión antes de realizar un diagnóstico o proponer un tratamiento”.

Early detection and prevention of sickness These technological advances will thus be responsible for transforming medicine and facilitating earlier detection and prevention of disease. Doctor Helios Pareja, a researcher at the Doctorate and Research School and a professor in the School of Basic Biomedical Sciences at Universidad Europea, says that “the hospital of the future will stress primary and secondary prevention, eliminating risk factors before disease appears or in its very early stages, with the aim of stopping it from developing and taking hold.”

Los biosensores wearables, dispositivos que se llevan puestos y que son capaces de mantener un control absoluto de los signos vitales, también tendrán un especial protagonismo en el futuro. Estos permitirán obtener datos y monitorizar en directo a los pacientes, tanto si están ingresados en el hospital como si se encuentran en su propia casa. Se cree, también, que serán fundamentales a la hora de detectar con antelación ciertos episodios que pueden amenazar la salud de las personas; por ejemplo, en el caso de las personas epilépticas. Conociendo los síntomas previos al ataque, los dispositivos podrán detectarlos y avisar del riesgo al paciente y a su médico especialista.

Tal y como explica el profesor en Ingeniería Biomédica, “la medicina es un área cada vez más dependiente de la tecnología, tanto para pruebas diagnósticas como para el seguimiento y monitorización del tratamiento; y evoluciona según los avances van ofreciendo nuevas soluciones. Podemos dar por hecho que la medicina que conocemos nosotros tendrá poco que ver con la medicina que conozcan nuestros nietos”.

De hecho, en algunos hospitales del mundo ya se están implementando tecnologías bastante innovadoras. En el Humber River Hospital de Toronto se utilizan robots automatizados que circulan por los pasillos para transportar suministros al personal; y en el Karolinska Solna en Estocolmo, una red de tubos neumáticos conecta todos los puntos del hospital agilizando el sistema y permitiendo que en un solo día un paciente se haga unas pruebas y obtenga su diagnóstico.

Detección temprana y prevención de enfermedades Los avances tecnológicos serán los responsables, por tanto, de la transformación de la medicina y facilitarán la prevención y detección de enfermedades con una mayor antelación. El doctor Helios Pareja, Investigador de la Escuela de Doctorado e Investigación y profesor de la Facultad de Ciencias Biomédicas Básicas de la Universidad Europea, asegura que “el hospital del futuro hará hincapié en la prevención primaria y secundaria, eliminando factores de riesgo antes de que se produzca la enfermedad o en estadios muy tempranos de la misma, con el fin de detener su evolución y consolidación”.

In addition to all the preventive tools, this doctor claims that physical exercise and nutrition will be key factors in this field.

“Both strategies have demonstrated, with sufficient scientific evidence, that they are effective in the prevention and therapy of numerous pathologies. Diseases that are susceptible to improvement through physical exercise and the right nutrition are not only those related to metabolism –such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension– but also cardiac irregularities, colon and breast cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s, cystic fibrosis and a long list of other complaints,” he explains. At present, according to data from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, 73% of Spaniards raise their risk of falling ill due to a sedentary lifestyle.

Margarita Pérez Ruiz, professor of Exercise Physiology, believes that in the hospital of the future “sports medicine will work in conjunction with the rehabilitation services to help patients recover. In addition, fitness centers should have trained professionals to apply just the right amount of exercise to improve patients’ physical condition in different sicknesses. In this way, primary care doctors and specialists will be able to refer patients to these centers with the assurance that they will receive the proper treatment.” The professionals will thus work in sync so that patients will get the maximum benefit to health provided by exercise.

The experience of patients in the hospital of the future will be completely different from today because there will be much more personalized attention, dispensed in much more friendly surroundings.

Juan José Beunza, professor of Interprofessional Public Health and Education at Universidad Europea, explains that in recent years and “owing to economic and political circumstances, we have placed great emphasis on the economic aspect of healthcare. But we just can’t reduce it to that and forget that we are dealing with patients. We need to bring back the essence of healthcare: the care of people offered by people.”

To achieve this ‘humanization’ in hospitals it will be necessary to make an effort in training the professionals of the future, which should be an important factor that boards of directors should take into account. He adds that “quality is measured not just in survival times but also in humanity.” His idea is that medical centers not just cure and treat disease but focus their attention on caring for people.

Architecture, design and vertical gardens And as part of that desire to make hospitals more pleasant and adapt them to society’s needs, there must be figures like the ‘social interpreter’ who will promote understanding between health professionals and patients who come from other countries. “Multiculturalism is the order of the day, and in fields like medicine, where there is a lot at stake, it’s essential to have the linguistic support of an expert who can guarantee that communication is fluid, that cultural conventions and norms are respected, and that information be precise so that there are no misunderstandings on either side,” explains doctor Paola Nieto, professor of Interpreting at Universidad Europea.

Además de todas las herramientas que contribuyan a la labor de prevención, el doctor sostiene que el ejercicio físico y la nutrición serán piezas claves en este campo. “Ambas estrategias han demostrado, con suficiente evidencia científica, ser eficaces en la prevención y la terapia coadyuvante de numerosas patologías. Las enfermedades susceptibles de mejorar a través del ejercicio físico y una correcta nutrición no son solo aquellas relacionadas con el metabolismo como la diabetes, la obesidad o la hipertensión; sino también alteraciones cardiacas, cáncer de colon y de mama, depresión, Alzheimer, fibrosis quística y un largo etcétera”, explica. En la actualidad, según datos del Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, el 73% de los españoles aumenta su riesgo de enfermar a causa del sedentarismo.

En el hospital del futuro, Margarita Pérez Ruiz, Catedrática de Fisiología del Ejercicio, cree que “la medicina deportiva trabajará en conjunto con el servicio de rehabilitación participando en la recuperación de los pacientes. Y por otro lado, en los centros de fitness deberá haber profesionales formados y que apliquen la dosis correcta de ejercicio para mejorar la condición física en las diferentes enfermedades. Así, los médicos de atención primaria y los especialistas podrán derivar a los pacientes a estos centros de referencia con la seguridad de que serán tratados correctamente”. Los profesionales, por tanto, trabajarán en sincronía para que los pacientes se aprovechen de los beneficios que aporta el ejercicio sobre la salud.

La experiencia del enfermo en el hospital del futuro también será totalmente diferente ya que se ofrecerá una atención mucho más cercana, centrada en las personas y en espacios muchos más amigables. Juan José Beunza, Profesor Titular de Salud Pública y Educación Interprofesional de la Universidad Europea, explica que en los últimos años, “debido a coyunturas económicas y políticas, hemos puesto un gran énfasis en

el aspecto económico de la asistencia sanitaria. Pero no podemos reducirla a eso y olvidarnos de que tratamos con pacientes. Existe una necesidad de recuperar la esencia de la asistencia sanitaria: el cuidado de personas ofrecido por personas”.

Para conseguir una humanización de los hospitales será necesario hacer un esfuerzo en la formación de los profesionales del futuro y que esta sea un factor importante y a tener en cuenta en los consejos de administración. Añade que “la calidad no se mide solo en tiempo de supervivencia, sino también en humanidad”. Su idea es que los centros médicos dejen de curar o tratar enfermedades para centrarse en cuidar de las personas.

whose aim will be to produce serenity and make patients feel better. According to José Luis Esteban, professor at the School of Architecture, Engineering and Design, this means there will be smaller buildings that are interconnected, for example by garden areas. Interior lighting will be much closer to natural light, the furniture will be ergonomic, and colors will help maintain the sensation of calm.

He lists the keys to this architecture and design: a closer connection with nature, a more human scale and the use of renewable energies to make hospitals more self-sustaining. He defines them as “garden hospitals” and says that “their influence on the health of patients is spectacularly positive.” Doctors and health professionals know that the surroundings have a decisive effect on the state of mind of patients, and thus on quality and time of recovery. This aspect, which is fundamental in all treatments, is especially important in oncology. Francisco Domouso, director of the department of Design, Art and Digital Contents, and Fabricio Santos, area director in the same department of Universidad Europea, study how to adapt hospital space so as to improve the stay of these cancer patients. They focus their proposals through an overall approach that includes everything from the small scale of buildings to their accessibility.

The hospital at home Another key aspect of the medicine of the future is home hospitalization, which will allow patients to stay at home while being remotely observed and connected to a hospital thanks to technology. For example, this will permit patients with chronic illnesses to visit medical centers much less. Studies demonstrate that most older, dependent people prefer to be cared for at home. Proximity to family, an ongoing connection with their surroundings, access to their possessions, greater independence…all these things make for psychological and emotion-

al advantages that benefit health and quality of life. Natividad Comes, a nurse and manager of the Masquecuidar firm, explains that “there are studies that demonstrate that recovery is much faster and there are fewer returns to hospital when a person recovers at home.”

According to this expert, such home care is a good response to the challenge of growing old and to the rise in disabling chronic conditions. Likewise, at the start of the 21st century the World Health Organization (WHO) justified home-care as necessary for long-range attention for chronic disease.

To make the home hospital a reality, technological innovation will play an essential role. “Home telemonitoring, or telemedicine –and we’ve already had some experience of this in Spain– makes it possible to follow a patient’s clinical condition in an automated and systematic way,” Natividad Comes explains.

In response to technological advances and people’s needs, medicine and hospitals will undergo a considerable transformation in the coming years, one that will positively affect patients’ health. Medical centers will cease to be cold, impersonal places and become friendly spaces that are in contact with nature and where prevention and innovation are the order of the day. In the end, going to the doctor will be a much more pleasant experience and we will enjoy better health thanks to prevention and improved treatment. The future is very promising.

Arquitectura, diseño y jardines verticales Y en ese afán por convertir los hospitales en espacios más agradables y adaptados a las necesidades de la sociedad, será necesaria la presencia de perfiles como el del intérprete social, que se encargará de facilitar el entendimiento entre profesionales y pacientes que provengan de otros países. “La multiculturalidad está a la orden del día y en campos como la medicina, en el que hay mucho en juego, es imprescindible contar con un apoyo lingüístico de un experto que garantice que la comunicación sea fluida, que se respeten los convencionalismos y las normas culturales y que la información sea precisa para que no haya malentendidos por ninguna de las partes”, explica la Doctora Paola Nieto, profesora de Interpretación en la Universidad Europea.

En los hospitales del futuro tampoco se podrá obviar la arquitectura y el diseño de interiores, que tendrán como objetivo producir serenidad y hacer sentir mejor a los pacientes. Esto se traduce, según el Catedrático Escuela de Arquitectura, In-

geniería y Diseño, José Luis Esteban, en edificios de menor tamaño que estarán conectados entre sí, por ejemplo, por zonas ajardinadas. En el interior la iluminación será mucho más cercana a la luz natural, el mobiliario será ergonómico y predominarán los colores que ayuden a mantener la sensación de tranquilidad.

Las claves de la arquitectura y el diseño serán, explica el catedrático: una mayor conexión con la naturaleza, una escala más humana y la explotación de energías renovables que hagan que los hospitales sean más sostenibles energéticamente. Él los define como “hospitales-jardín” y afirma que “la influencia en la evolución de los pacientes es espectacularmente positiva”. Los médicos y los profesionales sanitarios saben que el entorno afecta y condiciona de manera decisiva el estado de ánimo de los pacientes, y por consiguiente los tiempos y la calidad de la curación. Este aspecto fundamental en todos los tratamientos cobra especial relevancia en la oncología. Francisco Domouso, Director del departamento de Diseño, Arte y Contenidos Digitales; y Fabricio Santos, Director de Área de Diseño, Arte y Contenidos Digitales de la Universidad Europea estudian, precisamente, cómo adaptar los espacios de los hospitales para mejorar las estancias de los pacientes de oncología. En su caso, enfocan sus propuestas desde una óptica global que abarca desde la pequeña escala hasta la accesibilidad cognitiva.

El hospital en casa Otros de los aspectos clave en la medicina del futuro es la hospitalización domiciliaria, que permitirá que los pacientes permanezcan en sus hogares mientras están vigilados y conectados en remoto al hospital gracias a la tecnología. Esto hará que, por ejemplo, los enfermos con dolencias crónicas vayan mucho menos a los centros médicos. Los estudios demuestran que la mayoría de las personas mayores y dependientes desean ser

cuidados en su domicilio. La proximidad a su familia, mantener la relación con su entorno social, el acceso a sus pertenencias y la mayor independencia se traduce en ventajas psicológicas y emocionales que repercuten en beneficios para su salud y calidad de vida.

Natividad Comes, enfermera y gerente de la empresa Masquecuidar, explica que hay “estudios que demuestran que la recuperación es más ágil y que los reingresos son menores cuando una persona se recupera en casa”.

Según comenta la experta, la atención domiciliaria representa una buena respuesta al reto del envejecimiento y al aumento de las patologías crónicas invalidantes. A su vez, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), a principios del siglo XXI, justificó la asistencia domiciliaria como una necesidad frente a los cuidados a largo plazo en las molestias crónicas.

Para que el hospital en casa sea una realidad en el futuro, la innovación tecnológica jugará un papel esencial.

“La telemonitorización domiciliaria o telemedicina, de la que ya hay algunas experiencias en nuestro entorno, permite realizar de forma automatizada y sistemática un seguimiento a distancia del estado clínico del paciente”, explica Natividad Comes.

En respuesta a los avances tecnológicos y a las necesidades de la población, la medicina y los hospitales vivirán una fuerte transformación en los próximos años afectando positivamente en la salud de los pacientes. Los centros médicos dejarán de ser lugares fríos e impersonales para convertirse en espacios amigables, en contacto con la naturaleza, en los que se trabaje en la prevención de enfermedades y la innovación esté a la orden del día. En definitiva, ir al médico será una experiencia mucho más agradable y gozaremos de una mejor salud gracias a la prevención y la mejora en los tratamientos. El futuro, sin duda, resulta prometedor.

Una vida de calidad y en cantidad —A life of quality and quantity

En 2050 el 30% de los españoles serán mayores de 65 años y España se convertirá en el segundo país más envejecido del mundo. Ante este pronóstico, y teniendo en cuenta que la vejez ocupará casi un tercio de nuestra existencia, resulta necesario encontrar la fórmula para que los mayores lleven una vida más activa durante esta etapa y gocen de un estado físico y mental óptimos. El envejecimiento activo trata, precisamente, de responder a esta pregunta y aportar soluciones para que los años no sean un impedimento a la hora de llevar una vida plena en todos los aspectos.

La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) define el envejecimiento activo como “el proceso de optimización de oportunidades de salud, participación y seguridad con el objetivo de mejorar la calidad de vida a medida que las personas envejecen; permite a las personas realizar su potencial bienestar físico, social y mental a lo largo de todo su ciclo vital y participar en la sociedad de acuerdo con sus necesidades, deseos y capacidades”. Se trata, en definitiva, de asegurar la calidad de vida durante la vejez.

In the year 2050 some 30% of Spaniards will be older than 65, and Spain will be the country with the second oldest population in the world. Faced with this situation, and taking into account that old age accounts for almost a third of our existence, it is necessary to find the formula so that our old people can have a more active life during this period and enjoy optimum physical and mental health. ‘Active ageing’ responds precisely to this question and provides solutions so that the passing years will not be impede living a life that’s full in every way.

Y para lograrlo, los investigadores están de acuerdo en que es fundamental llevar un estilo de vida saludable y mantener activos el cuerpo y la mente a través del deporte. Sin embargo, según explica la profesora Lidia Brea, directora del Máster Universitario de Actividad Física y Salud de la Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid–Universidad Europea, “los últimos estudios publicados demuestran que cerca de un tercio de la población mayor de 70 años, y más de la mitad si son de más de 80 años, no cumplen con las recomendaciones”.

Perder el miedo al ejercicio La edad no debe de ser un impedimento para practicar ejercicio; al contrario, este incide tanto en la calidad de vida como en su cantidad. Según Brea, “si se realizan 150 minutos de actividad física moderada a la semana, el riesgo de mortalidad se reduce en un 31% comparado con el de personas menos activas”. Alejandro Lucía, catedrático y profesor de la Universidad Europea, añade que “hay que perder miedo al ejercicio”, este atenúa los efectos del envejecimiento y es la mejor forma de prevenir enfermedades.

La principal ventaja de practicar deporte es que ayuda a combatir uno de los problemas que acarrea la edad con más frecuencia: la sarcopenia o pérdida de masa y potencia muscular producto del envejecimiento. Entre un 5% y un 13% de las personas entre 60 y 70 años, y entre un 11% y un 50% de las personas mayores de 80, sufren esta enfermedad que es la principal causante de caídas y que puede llegar a derivar en la discapacidad en algunos casos. No existen fármacos para combatirla;

It allows people to realize their potential for physical, social, and mental wellbeing throughout the life course and to participate in society according to their needs, desires and capacities.” In sum, it’s a case of assuring quality of life during old age.

For the WHO, active ageing means enjoying good health, optimal physical and mental functioning, being independent and autonomous, and maintaining social activities and participation. To achieve this, researchers agree that it’s essential to lead a healthy life and keep the body and mind active through sports. Nevertheless, according to Lidia Brea, Director of the University Master in Physical Activity and Health of the Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid-Universidad Europea, “the most recent studies demonstrate that nearly a third of the population older than 70, and more than half of those over 80, don’t satisfy the recommendations.”

Losing the fear of exercise Age shouldn’t ne an impediment to exercising. On the contrary, it influences the quality of life just as much as it does the length. According to Brea, “if you engage in 150 minutes of moderate phys-

ical activity each week, the risk of death is reduced by 31% compared to less active people.” Alejandro Lucía, department head and professor at Universidad Europea, adds that “it’s necessary to lose one’s fear of exercise” because it attenuates the effects of ageing and is the best way of preventing disease.

The principal advantage of engaging in sports is that they help stave off one of the most frequent problems of old age: sarcopenia, or the loss of muscle mass and strength. Between 5% and 13% of people between the ages of 60 and 70, and from 11% and 50% of those over 80, suffer from this disease, which is the principal cause of falls and which can lead to incapacity in some cases. There are no medicines to fight it; the only cure is strength exercises that fortify the body’s muscles, as Alejandro Lucía explains.

Sports also help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, prevent diabetes and obesity, reduce the chances of suffering from anxiety and depression, and favor rehabilitation from problems with joints and the respiratory system, traumatology and post-operative blood circulation.

Although it’s always advisable to consult a professional from the field of sports and physical activity, older people are advised to practice moderate aerobic exercises at least five times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes.

The most common way is to get out and walk, although any activity that increase heart and breathing rates is valid. There should also be strength and flexibility exercises two or three times a week, with some light weights and stretching the muscles between 30 and 60 seconds, without causing pain. In this way, Lucía explains, “we get healthy and in good physical shape.”

Mental gymnastics to activate the brain But it’s not just the body that needs exercise: the brain should also be kept active and agile throughout life.

With the passing years, this organ undergoes changes that usually affect, for example, memory and attention.

That’s why it’s important to train the neurons to prevent or delay the symptoms and development of possible cerebral deterioration. Mar Sánchez, a psychologist and one of the founders of Neuromotiva, the first gymnasium in Spain designed to train the adult brain,

la única cura es la práctica de ejercicios que fortalezcan los músculos del cuerpo, tal y como explica Alejandro Lucía.

El deporte también ayuda a reducir el riesgo de padecer una enfermedad cardiovascular, previene la diabetes y la obesidad, disminuye las probabilidades de sufrir ansiedad y depresión y favorece la rehabilitación articular, respiratoria, traumatológica y vascular posquirúrgica.

Aunque siempre se aconseja consultar a un profesional en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte, a las personas mayores se les recomienda practicar ejercicios aeróbicos moderados al menos cinco veces a la semana durante mínimo 30 minutos. Lo más habitual es salir a andar, aunque cualquier actividad que aumente la frecuencia cardiaca y respiratoria es válida. También se debe trabajar la fuerza y la flexibilidad unas dos o tres veces por semana, cogiendo pesos ligeros y manteniendo los estiramientos entre 30 y 60 segundos sin generar dolor.

De este modo, explica Lucía, “conseguimos salud y forma física”.

Gimnasia mental para activar el cerebro Pero no solo el cuerpo necesita su dosis de ejercicio, también el cerebro debe mantenerse activo y ágil durante toda la vida. Con la edad, este órgano experimenta cambios que suelen afectar, por ejemplo, a la memoria o la atención. Por eso es importante entrenar las neuronas para prevenir o retrasar los síntomas y el desarrollo de un posible deterioro cerebral. Mar Sánchez, psicóloga y una de las fundadoras de Neuromotiva, el primer gimnasio diseñado para entrenar el cerebro adulto, recomienda la gimnasia mental para mantener y mejorar las capacidades cognitivas de los más mayores.

recommends that older people engage in mental gymnastics to maintain and improve their cognitive capacities.

“Some 80% of what we do every day is routine, and thus doesn’t require any mental effort on our part. But the brain, if it isn’t used, becomes weakened,” she explains. The key is in living in a conscious way and keeping the head active by solving puzzles or learning new things… Students at Neuromotiva practice this concentration when brushing their teeth by using the other hand or changing the way they usually walk to work, for example. The benefits, she claims, are noticeable in a short time.

A veces en diez años cambia el mundo. Algo así pasó entre 1999 y 2009. A finales del siglo XX internet estaba en pañales, los móviles empezaban a llegar en forma de ladrillo y Google… ni siquiera existía. “Cuando hoy lo explico, mis hijos no se lo creen”, recuerda Diego Ballesteros. Su trayectoria empresarial ilustra el cambio. Fue pionero del sector de internet en España al fundar Ocioteca.com en 1997, y dentro del grupo creó Comercomer. “No estábamos preparados y apenas había mercado para aquella idea”. Diez años después, todo había cambiado. Sindelantal, algo similar, fue un éxito y acabó siendo comprada por Just Eat. Hoy Ballesteros proporciona un software para la gestión de pequeños negocios a través de Bewe, su nueva compañía.

El fracaso: Comercomer Diego Ballesteros fundó Ocioteca en 1997, antes de la burbuja tecnológica. “Montar una empresa de internet era algo tremendamente extraño”, explica para situar el momento. Comercomer surgió como un spinoff de Ocioteca. Ballesteros recuerda que la captación de oferta fue muy buena y que incluso desarrollaron la primera plataforma para pedir comida a domicilio a través de la televisión.

Pero era demasiado pronto. “El problema fue sencillamente que no había usuarios de internet en España. Nos adelantamos drásticamente al momento en que un proyecto como ese tenía que haber nacido”, expone el empresario. Comercomer apenas logró ingresos y Ocioteca desapareció cuando pinchó la burbuja tecnológica y se quedó sin facturación, porque casi todos sus clientes eran portales de internet.

“Fracasó, me arruiné, me quedé sin un duro. Literal. Y decidí intentarlo de nuevo”, recuerda hoy este emprendedor “en serie”. “Es algo que llevas ahí dentro y te nace, y el fracaso hay que interpretarlo como parte del aprendizaje”. Ballesteros cree que en España sigue estigmatizándose el fracaso, pero a él le ayudó a mantener los pies en el suelo. “Para mí ha sido parte clara del éxito futuro”.

El éxito: Sindelantal El éxito se llamó, diez años después, Sindelantal. Una propuesta similar a Comercomer, pero cuando el mercado lo pedía: arrancó en 2009, se lanzó en 2010 y en 2012

Sometimes the world changes in ten years. That’s more or less what happened between 1999 and 2009. At the end of the 20th century Internet was still in its infancy, cell phones were beginning to arrive but they were shaped like bricks, and Google…didn’t even exist. “When I explain this today, my kids don’t believe it,” says Diego Ballesteros. His business career illustrates the change. He was a pioneer in the Internet sector in Spain when he founded Ocioteca.com in 1997, and as part of this group he created Comercomer. “We weren’t prepared and there was hardly any market for that idea.” Ten years later, everything had changed. Sindelantal, something similar, was a success and ended up being purchased by Just Eat. Today Ballesteros provides software for the management of small companies through Bewe, his new firm.

“Setting up an Internet company then was something really strange,” he explains. Comercomer came about as a spinoff of Ocioteca. Ballesteros recalls that the public response was very good and that they even developed the first system for ordering the home delivery of food through television.

lo adquirió Just Eat. Vivir tan intensamente las dos caras de la moneda le sirve para relativizar: “En internet la línea entre el éxito y el fracaso es demasiado delgada”. Para él, importa más cómo se afronta el reto. “No puedes tener nunca la sensación de no haber hecho lo imposible por que el proyecto salga adelante”, resume.

La experiencia frustrada le hizo aprender conceptos básicos que muchas veces son una trampa para emprendedores. Ahora forman parte de cualquier proyecto que él arranca: un enfoque muy claro hacia el producto, un buen pacto de socios y una buena gestión financiera, con un CFO “que te tenga la casa en orden”. La experiencia mejora las decisiones, el enfoque y el olfato, aunque el empresario aclara que la exposición al riesgo siempre existe, y más en internet.

Por último, la tenacidad y la constancia son clave. “El emprendedor tiene que ser del Atleti: un sufridor. Le ocurren cosas muy jodidas y se levanta. Y cada 15 años gana una Liga. Eso son las start-ups. Tener un poquito de éxito en un momento dado y que un proyecto salga bien. El emprendedor auténtico acaba encontrando el camino después de mucho sufrimiento”.

But it was too soon. “The problem was that there simply were not Internet users in Spain. We had gotten way too far ahead of the time when that project should have been launched,” the businessman goes on. Comercomer had hardly any income and Ocioteca disappeared when the technology bubble burst and it had no billings, because almost all its clients were Internet portals.

“It failed, I went broke, without a cent. Literally. And I decided to try again,” this ‘series’ entrepreneur recalls now. “It’s something inside you that you’re just born with, and failure must be seen as part of the learning process.” Ballesteros believes that in Spain failure is still stigmatized, but it helped him to keep his feet on the ground.

“For me it’s clearly been a part of my success.”

Success: Sindelantal Ten years later success came in the form of Sindelantal. Something similar to Comercomer, but at a time when the market demanded it: it started in 2009, took off in 2010, and in 2012 it was acquired by Just Eat. Living so intensely these two sides of the coin has helped Ballesteros to put things in perspective: “In Internet the line between success and failure is too thin.” For him, what’s more important is how challenges are met. “You should never have the feeling that you didn’t do everything you possibly could to make a project successful.”

Failure made him learn some basic concepts that are often a trap for entrepreneurs. But now they are a part of any project that he initiates: a very clear focus on the product, some good partners, and good financial management, with a CFO “who keeps the house in order.” Experience helps a businessman to make better decisions, and improves focus and instinct, although he says there will always be risk, and even more so with Internet.

Finally, tenacity and perseverance are essential. “An entrepreneur has to be like someone who roots for Atlético de Madrid: a sufferer. Terrible things happen to him and yet he gets up again. And every 15 years he wins the league championship.

That’s what startups are like. Having a little success at the right time so that the project can come out all right. The real entrepreneur ends up finding the right road after a lot of suffering.”

Dame un deporte y te daré un patrocinador —Give me a sport and I’ll give you a sponsor

En las camisetas, pero también en las gradas, en los podios o en los bañadores. Muchos clubes o actos deportivos lucen con orgullo una enseña concreta. Marcas acordes con su filosofía, señas de identidad visibles para miles de asistentes a estas actividades, nombres que se interrelacionan con la ciudadanía como un maridaje no gastronómico. El patrocinio deportivo es una de las formas más habituales de intercambio comercial y responde a la fórmula del win-win: todos ganan. Detrás de este contrato económico hay una estrategia mutua de compartir valores, vínculos emocionales y un futuro común.

Claro que tiene su ciencia. “El patrocinio deportivo consiste en el apoyo que da una empresa, principalmente de manera económica, a un activo deportivo ( jugador, entrenador, equipo, instalación, evento o campeonato) con el fin de obtener un retorno”, define Álvaro Fernández Luna. “Este retorno puede verse reflejado a través de la consecución de objetivos estratégicos como posicionamiento, identidad de marca o valores, o exposición mediática, que es equivalente a la publicidad”, agrega Luna, director del máster de Marketing Deportivo de la Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid - Universidad Europea.

Ese viaje de ida y vuelta lo confirma, por ejemplo, el cambio de nombre de algo tan notorio como la liga española de fútbol. En los últimos años, ha cambiado de nomenclatura según su patrocinador. El banco BBVA fue titular de la primera categoría hasta esta temporada, que cedió el puesto –gracias a “una negociación relámpago”, según los protagonistas– al Santander.

Compartiendo valores como “el máximo rendimiento o el espíritu de superación” de “la mejor liga del mundo”, la entidad creó un acuerdo de doble dirección: la entidad ganaba en repercusión y alcance internacional y La Liga sumaba financiación a la que recibe de corporaciones de diferentes sectores, como los automóviles Mazda, la empresa de lácteos Danone, la aseguradora Allianz o cervezas Mahou.

El líder en este sentido es la marca de bebidas refrescantes Red Bull. Como “exponente mundial” del patrocinio deportivo

–en palabras de Marc Garrigasait, mánager de fondos de inversión– su imagen está asociada a “eventos de alto riesgo y espectacularidad” para “asociar su marca a la juventud y a la energía”. El punto culminante fue el lanzamiento, en 2012, de un hombre desde la estratosfera para superar la velocidad del sonido. “Ha conseguido que si vemos a algún practicante de deporte de alto riesgo, nuestra mente lo asocie enseguida a la marca”, apunta el experto en ‘El abrazo del koala’, su tribuna en el diario El Confidencial.

También recurrió el pasado mes de septiembre a este tipo de unión la Universidad Europea con el equipo de baloncesto del Real Madrid. Más allá de la vertiente publicitaria, juntas promueven “el deporte y su relación con la gestión, la salud, la actividad física, la comunicación y el ocio”. “Desde el año 2006, la Universidad Europea y el

On the shirts but also in the stands, on the podiums or on bathing suits. Many clubs or sporting events exhibit with pride a special insignia. And there are brands in accordance with each sporting philosophy, distinguishing marks that are visible for the thousands of people who attend these events, names that intermingle with the public’s perception like a good marriage of food and wine. Sports sponsorship is one of the most common ways of advertising, and it’s a win-win formula: everyone comes out ahead. Behind this economic contract there’s a strategy to share values, emotional ties and a common future.

Of course there’s some science to all this.

“Sports sponsorship consists of the support, mainly economic, that a company gives to a sporting “asset” –a player, trainer, team, venue, event or championship– with the aim of reaping a benefit,” says Álvaro Fernández Luna. “Its return can be via the achievement of strategic objectives like positioning, brand identity or values or from media exposure that’s the equivalent of advertising,” adds Luna, who directs the master’s degree program in Sports Marketing at the Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid-Universidad Europea.

An example of that round trip: the very noticeable way the name of Spain’s professional football league has changed in recent years depending on its sponsor. Until this season the BBVA bank gave its name to this competition. But then –following “some lightening negotiations,” according to those involved– it turned over this position to Banco Santander. Sharing such values as “the maximum output and the spirit of improvement” of “the best league in the world,” the bank created a two-way agreement: it gained more attention and international reach, and La Liga got more financing of the kind it already received from different sectors, such as Mazda automobiles, the Danone dairy company, the Allianz insurance firm and Mahou beers.

In this sense, the world leader is the Red Bull soft drinks company. As a “world example” of sports advertising –in the words

of investment fund manager Marc Garrigasait– the firm’s image is associated with “spectacular, high-risk sporting events” so as to “associate the brand with youth and energy.” The climax of this was the 2012 descent of a man from the stratosphere at a speed faster than sound travels. “Red Bull has made it possible that if we see someone engaging in a high-risk sport, we immediately associate this with the brand,” writes Luna in ‘El abrazo del koala’, his daily forum in the El Confidencial digital newspaper.

Real Madrid han mantenido una relación basada en la lealtad y en unos valores comunes que nos han permitido convertir a la escuela universitaria en un modelo de éxito y de prestigio”, destacaba en este sentido Florentino Pérez, presidente del club, durante la presentación del acuerdo. En palabras de Conrado Briceño, director general de la Universidad Europea, “la Universidad Europea y el Real Madrid comparten una visión en la que destacan el factor humano y la creencia de que su alianza materializa estos valores, que son determinantes para una sociedad mejor”.

“Se unen dos entidades hoy que se están aportando mutuamente valores como el esfuerzo, la ambición y el salir a ganar. También la internacionalidad: es el club más internacional del mundo y nosotros somos una universidad con un claro carácter y una clara vocación internacional”, afirmó por su parte Miguel Zarzuelo, vicepresidente de marketing de la Universidad Europea.

La diferencia de estos convenios con otros, según asevera Fernández Luna, es que “el deporte tiene más valores con los que pueden sentirse identificadas más entidades o marcas. Así como el enorme impacto mediático de determinados eventos y deportistas”. Pruebas rápidas: ¿Quién no conoce el apellido que acompaña a la Liga española? ¿Qué compañía aérea lleva el Paris Saint Germain en la camiseta? ¿Qué ‘bebida energética’ organiza un campeonato de coches autoconstruidos o monta un espectáculo universal de salto al vacío para alcanzar la velocidad supersónica?

Está claro que la huella de estas firmas es mucho mayor con estas parejas de baile multitudinarias. En España, por ejemplo, un Ránking de Notoriedad de Patrocinio Deportivo realizado en 2009 por la multinacional IMG mostraba que Coca-Cola, la citada Santander y Repsol eran las marcas más nombradas por los encuestados gracias a su presencia en el mundo del fútbol o del motor.

“Debe tomarse siempre como una relación de win-win. Esto se traduce en que ambos deben ver potenciados su notoriedad y valores más allá del intercambio económico. También en este sentido existe el problema de la reputación que puede repercutir tanto positiva como negativamente en ambos colaboradores cuando hay alguna crisis. Por ejemplo, un jugador que demuestra una mala conducta en redes sociales”, advierte el experto, que ha ejercido como entrenador de natación. ¿Se produce este fenómeno en todas las disciplinas? “En cualquier deporte profesional es necesario, pero dado que los clubes o entidades deportivas se gestio-

According to Fernández Luna, the difference between these sporting agreements and others is that “sports has more values with which organizations and brands can identify. And there’s also the enormous media impact of certain events or athletes.” A quick quiz: Is there anyone who doesn’t know the name that accompanies the Spanish football league? What’s the air-

line that appears on the jerseys of the Paris Saint Germain team? What ‘energy drink’ organizes a competition for homemade soapbox vehicles or a high-altitude jump where the jumper exceeds the speed of sound? It’s clear that that these companies make a much greater impression through having these dance partners. In Spain, for example, a 2009 ranking of sports sponsorship brand awareness by the international IMG firm shows that Coca-Cola, the aforementioned Santander, and Repsol were the companies most named by those people who were surveyed, and it was thanks to the firms’ presence in the worlds of football or motor racing.

This expert, who has also been a swimming coach, goes on: “This is always a win-win situation: both parties get more exposure and their values are promoted beyond any economic operation. But in this sense there’s an effect on reputation, both positive or negative, should there be a crisis, for example if a player misuses social media.”

Is this the case in all disciplines? “In any professional sport it’s necessary, but in light of the fact that today the sporting organizations are managed as if they were entertainment companies, they are very efficient when it comes to finding sponsors,” he adds. “There are cases where teams have disappeared when they weren’t able to find a sponsor, and maybe the best example is in Formula 1 or Moto GP, where the teams depend almost 100% on their main sponsor. On

an individual level it’s more complicated, because the athletes often depend on just the salary that their club pays them, or on a sports scholarship or their federation. And we all know of cases where a top athlete has had to pay his own way to travel to an international event.”

His colleague Marisa Sáenz mentions different current trends in this kind of sponsorship. For example, when “a brand gets closer to its public through sport” it’s called sports sponsorship, and it tends to involve emotional components. Sáenz, who is director of the Alfredo Di Stéfano University MBA in Sporting Management, which is taught in the school created by Universidad Europea and Real Madrid, points out that in itself this is not enough: “Many brands compete simultaneously for the attention and affection of the spectators.”

“If the brand wants to be there event after event, it will become part of the landscape and may go unnoticed,” she observes. “It’s essential that the sponsorship be active, and that there be a ‘story’ to tell that will grab the target public.” It’s necessary to differentiate between the image rights, when a particular athlete is sponsored, and the naming rights, when a venue is sponsored (such as the Wanda Metropolitano stadium of Atlético de Madrid). Fernández Luna, for his part, argues that sports sponsorship tends to be favorable in any discipline and that “the companies should understand the potential benefits in supporting sport in all its forms, not just from the point of view of immediate economic benefits but also from a social point of view.”

“Existen casos en los que equipos han desaparecido por no tenerlos, y quizás el mejor ejemplo se da en la Fórmula 1 o en moto GP, donde los equipos dependen casi al 100% de su patrocinador principal”, esgrime. “A nivel individual es más complicado, ya que los atletas muchas veces dependen únicamente del salario que les da su club, una beca deportiva o la federación correspondiente. Y todos conocemos algunos casos en los que un atleta de nivel ha tenido que costearse un viaje para competir en un evento internacional”.

Su compañera Marisa Sáenz menciona distintas tendencias actuales en el patrocinio. Veamos: cuando “una marca se acerca a su público de interés a través del deporte” se llama patrocinio deportivo, y suele ir entrelazado a componentes emocionales. La directora del MBA Universitario en Dirección de Entidades Deportivas Alfredo Di Stéfano, impartido en la escuela creada por la Universidad Europea y el Real Madrid, apunta que eso en sí ya no es suficiente: “Muchas marcas compiten simultáneamente por la atención y el cariño de los espectadores”.

“Si la marca simplemente está evento tras evento, formará parte del paisaje y pasará desapercibida”, anota, “es fundamental la activación del patrocinio, que existan unos objetivos claros previos y una historia que contar que enganche al público objetivo”. Hay que diferenciar, aparte, los derechos de imagen cuando se ‘esponsoriza’ a un deportista en particular y los naming rights al apadrinar un recinto (como el estadio Wanda Metropolitano). Fernández Luna, por su parte, sostiene que el patrocinio deportivo suele resultar favorable en cualquier disciplina y que “las empresas deben darse cuenta del potencial que tiene apoyar el deporte en todas sus formas, no solo desde el punto de vista del retorno económico inmediato, sino también desde el punto de vista social”.

Rebeca Grynspan Rebeca Grynspan, economista y ex vicepresidenta de Costa Rica, fue elegida Secretaria General Iberoamericana en 2014. El pasado mes de enero, la Universidad Europea de Madrid le concedió el doctorado honoris causa —Rebeca Grynspan, a former economist and Vice-president of Costa Rica, was elected Ibero-American Secretary General in 2014. Last January the Universidad Europea de Madrid awarded her a doctor honoris causa degree in recognition of “her support for Ibero-American integration” and “her commitment to the citizens of Ibero-America, whose rights she has made a centerpiece.”

Rebeca Grynspan nació en San José de Costa Rica en 1955. Sus padres provenían de Polonia y ella escaló en este país centroamericano desde la vicepresidencia de Hacienda hasta la Secretaría General Iberoamericana en 2014, cargo para el que fue elegida por unanimidad. El pasado 17 de enero se acercó al campus de la Universidad Europea de Madrid para recibir el doctorado honoris causa otorgado por el centro. Este título reconocía “su apoyo a la integración iberoamericana” y “su compromiso con los ciudadanos de Iberoamérica, cuyos derechos y libertades ha situado en el centro de su vocación”. Su formación como economista para “cambiar la vida de las personas” y su creencia en la educación como motor de cambio siguen manteniéndola vibrante, optimista, con un brillo de ilusión en las pupilas a pesar de la apretada agenda en su visita a nuestro país.

Antes de nada, ¿qué le supone recibir el doctorado honoris causa por la Universidad Europea?

Siento una gran emoción. Me siento sumamente honrada. Es lo que siempre se

dice, pero le tengo una especial admiración a los centros de estudios. Creo en la enseñanza y la educación como motor de las cosas buenas en la sociedad. Además, en lo personal es un sentimiento que me llena de ilusión y me ayuda a hacer una reflexión sobre mi trayectoria, mi mundo, mi vida. Es muy bonito.

Recibe este prestigioso reconocimiento por su liderazgo como Secretaria General Iberoamericana. ¿Cómo resumiría esa labor?

He sido muy consistente en mi lucha por erradicar la pobreza y enfrentar las desigualdades. Eso ha trazado una línea constante dentro de mi pensamiento.

Estudié economía porque pensaba que era una manera, estaba convencida, de mejorar la vida de la gente, no solo de maximizar los beneficios de las empresas. Creía que era una forma de que todo el mundo llegara a su máximo potencial.

Además, creo que otra línea constante ha sido luchar contra la desigualdad, no solo de ingresos sino también la llamada

horizontal, la que se produce entre grupos, por género, por raza, por religión, por etnia... Esas han sido mis constantes. ¿Queda todavía mucho camino por recorrer? ¿Cuáles son los mayores desafíos?

En el espacio iberoamericano —que es el que represento—, pero también en todo el mundo, tenemos el desafío de erradicar la pobreza. Y el de que se distribuyan mejor los beneficios del progreso. También somos mucho más conscientes de que tenemos que cuidar el medio ambiente.

En alguna ocasión ha declarado que “la Secretaría General Iberoamericana es una institución construida en torno a todo aquello que nos une y que ha sido clave para el entendimiento en Iberoamérica”. ¿Qué es lo que más une a la gente, a su juicio?

A todos nos une siempre lo intangible.

Rebeca Grynspan was born in San José de Costa Rica in 1955. Her parents came from Poland and she rose in this Central American country from the vice-presidency of the Treasury Department to become Ibero-American Secretary General in 2014, a position for which she was elected unanimously. Last January 17 she came to the campus of Universidad Europea de Madrid to receive a doctor honoris causa degree. It recognized “her support for Ibero-American integration” and “her commitment to the citizens of Ibero-America, whose rights she has made a centerpiece.”

Her training as an economist “to change the lives of people” and her belief in education as the engine of change, are what keeps her vibrant and optimistic. In spite of her full agenda during her visit to Spain, she fairly glowed with excitement.

First of all, what does it mean to you to receive a doctor honoris causa degree from Universidad Europea?

It’s a great pleasure. I feel really honored. That’s what everyone says, but

¿Y qué papel juega en eso la educación?

¿De qué forma incide, en este sentido, la cooperación?

Creo que la educación ha sido el principal motor de movilidad social en nuestra región. Sin duda. Déjeme darle dos datos: América Latina ha tenido en este siglo una expansión impresionante y supo acercar la educación a sectores que no habían tenido nunca acceso. Duplicó su población universitaria y el 70% de estos estudiantes son la primera generación de universitarios de su familia.

Creo que la cooperación iberoamericana ha abierto un camino de cooperación horizontal, que también se conoce como ‘sur-sur’ o ‘triangular’.

A través de eso se ha hecho mucho: ya no esperamos a un mecenas para resolver nuestros problemas, sino que nos ayudamos todos. Lo que quiero ahora es que el sector privado se involucre fuertemente.

Uno de los objetivos que ha propuesto es que para el año 2020 unos 200.000 jóvenes latinoamericanos tengan una vivencia educativa fuera de sus fronteras. ¿Por qué cree que este aspecto es tan positivo?

¿Qué le diría a un estudiante para que valore la esencia del compañerismo y el esfuerzo?

He leído y estudiado los resultados de la beca Erasmus y me llama la atención que los que la han aprovechado tienen menos tasa de desempleo y mejores trabajos. Y me pregunto: “¿por qué quien pasa seis meses fuera es mejor abogado o arquitecto?” Y en realidad es que la experiencia provoca que desarrolle las denominadas habilidades “blandas”: trabajar en equipo, en ambientes multiculturales, diversos, interdisciplinares. Y ese es el mundo en el que estamos viviendo. Por eso hay que darle esa oportunidad a aquellos que no la están teniendo. ¿Y la economía? ¿Es también un motor de desarrollo social?

En América Latina tuvimos un progreso de educación en la misma época que tuvimos un mayor dinamismo económico y un aumento de materias primas o del comercio internacional, pero ese crecimiento fue algo que no premió a los sectores vulnerables. En estos momentos, sin embargo, pudimos crecer reduciendo la desigualdad y la pobreza. Y eso tenemos que celebrarlo, porque Latinoamérica, siendo el continente más desigual, no había logrado crecer con equidad. Aunque ahora no vivimos momentos tan boyantes y notamos que la desigualdad sigue.

I have a special admiration for educational centers. I believe in teaching and education as an engine for achieving the good things in society. And personally, it’s a feeling that fills me with excitement and makes me reflect on my career, my world, my life. It’s very nice.

You’re receiving this prestigious recognition for your leadership as IberoAmerican Secretary General, as a reward for your support for Ibero-American integration and for your constant commitment to the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Ibero-America. How would you sum up that work?

En primer lugar, le diría que la vida no siempre es lineal y que a veces hay que dar vueltas más largas. Lo importante, no obstante, es no perder la capacidad de tener un objetivo y perseguirlo. El esfuerzo radica en eso: en no renunciar en tu proyecto de vida. Eso no significa que las circunstancias no lo modifiquen o te pongan obstáculos, pero no tienes que perder la capacidad de buscar tu objetivo. Si no, la vida decide por ti, en lugar de que tú le des sentido.

I’ve consistently fought to eradicate poverty and inequality. That’s led to a consistent way of thinking. I studied economics because I thought, was convinced, it was a way of improving the lives of people, not just of companies making the greatest profit. I thought it was a way in which everyone could realize their greatest potential. I think another constant has been my fight against inequality, not just in income but in so-called horizontal inequality: between groups, by gender, by race, by religion, by ethnic groups… Those have been the constants in my life.

Otra cosa que suele remarcar en su discurso: ¿en qué se distingue decir “Iberoamérica” en vez de “Latinoamérica”?

Is there still a great deal to be done?

What are the greatest challenges?

Latinoamérica es un concepto geográfico: abarca de México a Tierra de Fuego, en Argentina, incluyendo a los países del Caribe. Iberoamérica incluye España, Portugal y Andorra. Y es un concepto más de comunidad. Su columna vertebral es la cultura y su historia común. Y en este punto volvemos a lo intangible: hay un regionalismo que no es geográfico sino de afinidades.

Por último, ¿a quién le dedica este reconocimiento público tan relevante?

A mi familia. A mis hijos y a mi marido.

Por supuesto.

In Ibero-America –which is the area I represent– but all over the world we have the challenge of eradicating poverty. And of better distributing the benefits of progress. We’re also much more aware that we must care for the environment.

On occasion you have said that “the Ibero-American Secretariat General is an institution built around everything that unites us and has been essential for understanding in Ibero-America.”

In your judgment, what is it that most unites people?

What always unites us is what’s intangible. Feelings, affections, languages, culture, empathy…

And what role does education play in all this?

I think that education has been the main engine of social mobility in our region.

Without any doubt. Let me give you two facts: in this century Latin America has undergone impressive expansion and was able to bring education to sectors that had never before had it. It doubled its university population, and 70% of those students are the first in their families ever to attend university.

One of its aims is that by 2020 some 200,000 young Latin Americans will have some kind of educational experience outside their native countries. Why do you think that this is such a positive aspect?

And the economy? Is that another engine for social development?

I’ve read about and studied the effects of the Erasmus scholarships and found it interesting that the students who have participated have less unemployment and better jobs. And I ask myself: “Why is someone who spends six months overseas a better lawyer or architect?”

And the fact is that this experience helps that person develop the so-called social skills: working as a team in multicultural, diverse, interdisciplinary settings. And that’s the kind of a world we’re living in.

That’s why we should give that opportunity to people who don’t have it.

In Latin America we made progress in education during the same period when there was great economic growth and an increase in raw materials and international trade, but that growth didn’t reach the more vulnerable sectors of society. Now, however, we have been able to grow while reducing inequality and poverty. And we should celebrate this because Latin America, as the continent with the greatest inequalities, had not been able to grow with fairness. Although now the situation is not so buoyant and we see that inequality persists.

And that’s the kind of a world we’re living in”

In this sense, what’s the role of cooperation?

I think that Ibero-American cooperation has opened an avenue to horizontal cooperation, which is also known as ‘south-south’ or ‘triangular.’ A great deal has been accomplished this way: we’re no longer waiting for a benefactor to solve our problems but are all helping each other. What I want now is for the private sector to really get involved.

What would you say to a student to make him appreciate the value of fellowship and effort?

In the first place, I’d tell him that life doesn’t always progress lineally, and that sometimes we have to make detours. But the important thing is to not lose sight of an objective, and to pursue it. That’s what effort is: in not abandoning your life project. That doesn’t mean that circumstances can’t modify it or create obstacles, but you can’t lose the capacity to pursue your objective. Because if you do, then life is making your decisions, instead of you making sense of life.

Something else you often talk about: what’s the difference between saying Ibero-America and Latin America?

Latin America is a geographic concept, running from Mexico to Tierra de Fuego, in Argentina, and including the Caribbean countries. Ibero-America includes Spain, Portugal and Andorra.

And it’s more a concept of community.

Its backbone is a common history and culture. And here is where we go back to the intangible: there is a regionalism that is not geographic but has to do with affinities.

Finally, to whom do you dedicate this very relevant public recognition?

To my family. To my children and my husband. Naturally.

She remembers with affection the ‘Journalism, 1996-2000’ course. Yes, 17 years have gone by since that unforgettable experience during which, she says now, she learned in a practical way the profession that has become an essential part of her life. And that’s how, with effort and enthusiasm, Eva García Almazán has continued a very intense period, dedicated to what she’s always liked most: communication.

“After graduation I worked for six years in the news programs of different media.

Then I took up business communications, which is where I am now,” she says with enthusiasm. “After being communications director in two agencies, I’ve presented my own project: COMMPY, the first communications and PR network in Spain.”

A 39-year-old Madrid native, Eva recommends Universidad Europea for many reasons, but above all because “it prepares you to work.” “And it’s where I met great professors and classmates. Without them I wouldn’t have been able to learn everything I learned. I learned teamwork, which helped me to apply it to companies,” she adds. Eva was clear about what she wanted to from an early age. “I loved reading, writing and telling stories.

And it’s incredible that I’m still doing it now, with my clients,” she adds. “I’ve always liked journalism and I knew I’d study the subject in a place where I could learn theory and practice and get a chance to practice in news media.” This Alumni smiles when recalling her jobs in television and radio or her time at the Universidad Europea newspaper, where she covered sporting events. “They were unforgettable years,” she says. And so she advises any current students “to take advantage of every single moment of this apprenticeship, to talk, share, research and practice” so as to have a better chance of making it in a job market that demands “passion, empathy, honesty, commitment, effort and authenticity.”

And it is precisely these skills that Eva promotes from her current firm, COMMPY, which she created with a group of highly experienced professionals. The aim is to improve the strategic communication of small companies, startups and entrepreneurs. It’s a big dream come true. “Over the years I’ve realized that with work, effort, passion and knowledge, dreams can become reality,” she says, fully convinced that her road began at Universidad Europea. The trip was so exciting that journalist/businesswoman Eva García Almazán would repeat it without hesitation. “In my case, everything was worthwhile,” she concludes firmly.

Recuerda con cariño y orgullo su promoción: “Periodismo, curso 1996-2000”. Sí, ya han transcurrido 17 años desde aquella experiencia inolvidable donde, confiesa, aprendió de forma práctica una profesión que se ha convertido en parte esencial de su vida. Y así, con esfuerzo y entusiasmo, Eva García Almazán ha seguido viviendo una etapa muy intensa, dedicándose siempre a lo que más le gusta: la comunicación. “Tras la carrera estuve trabajando durante seis años como periodista en informativos de diferentes medios. Después, empecé en comunicación empresarial, y aquí sigo”, revela con apasionamiento. “Tras ser directora de comunicación en dos agencias, he presentado mi proyecto: COMMPY, la primera red de comunicación y RR. PP. en España”.

Madrileña, de 39 años, Eva recomienda la Universidad Europea por muchos motivos, pero, sobre todo, porque “te prepara para trabajar”. “Y allí conocí a grandes profesores y compañeros. Sin ellos no hubiera podido aprender todo lo que aprendí. Aprendí a trabajar en equipo y eso me ayudó a aplicarlo en las empresas”, reflexiona quien desde muy pequeña tuvo clara su vocación. “Me encantaba leer, escribir y contar historias. Y es increíble cómo hoy sigo haciéndolo de la mano de mis clientes”, apunta. “Siempre me ha gustado el periodismo y tenía claro que haría la carrera donde pudiera aprender teoría y práctica, y acceder a prácticas en medios”. En este sentido, nuestra Alumni evoca con una sonrisa sus momentos en televisión y radio o el paso por el periódico de la Universidad Europea, donde cubría las noticias deportivas. “Fueron años inolvidables”, resume. Así, a quien está ahora en plenos estudios le invita a “que aproveche cada minuto de aprendizaje; que hable, comparta, investigue y practique” para entrar con más oportunidades en un mercado laboral que exige “pasión, empatía, honestidad, compromiso, esfuerzo y autenticidad”.

Precisamente todas estas habilidades son las que promueve desde su actual empresa, COMMPY, creada junto a un grupo de colaboradores de gran trayectoria con el objetivo de mejorar la comunicación estratégica de las empresas pequeñas, start-ups y emprendedores.

Un gran sueño cumplido. “A lo largo de los años he entendido que los sueños, con trabajo, esfuerzo, pasión y conocimiento, se pueden hacer realidad”, afirma plenamente convencida de que su camino comenzó a recorrerse desde la Universidad Europea. Un itinerario tan emocionante que la periodista y empresaria Eva García Almazán volvería a repetirlo sin lugar a dudas. “En mi caso, valió la pena todo”, concluye con firmeza.

Diversidad y universidad —Diversity and University

La palabra universidad es un sustantivo de origen latino que enlaza con la idea de universalidad, es decir, la creación de un universo propio. Su significado ha sido utilizado, a través de los tiempos, para definir cualquier comunidad considerada en su aspecto colectivo.

Por su parte, la palabra diversidad es un sustantivo que hace referencia a la variedad, pluralidad, diferencia, complejidad, multiplicidad, heterogeneidad y disparidad, que no es la misma en los objetos y elementos. Ambas palabras juntas nos hablarían de un universo diferente, complejo y heterogéneo. Y es precisamente esta idea la que subyace cuando nos referimos a la diversidad en la sociedad y en el aula.

La diversidad tiene, sin embargo, muchas caras, pero los rostros que nos muestra y que integran la realidad de nuestras aulas podemos identificarlos, día a día, en los aspectos funcional, cultural, sexual, de género y edad.

El universo es rico y complejo, y todos los elementos que lo integran cumplen un papel para el funcionamiento del todo. Es inimaginable juzgar o discriminar a cualquiera de ellos. Del mismo modo, la Universidad está compuesta por docentes, no docentes y alumnos, que representan formas de vida dispares, y cada uno de ellos

cumple una función necesaria en el funcionamiento del todo. Cuando hablamos de diversidad, por tanto, nos referimos a que el ser humano debe aceptar cualquier diferencia como suya propia, lejos de estigmatizarla o señalarla como ajena. Y que toda la comunidad universitaria pueda cumplir su función en las mismas condiciones que los demás, sin ser juzgada, discriminada o sin encontrar obstáculos para su desarrollo intelectual. ¿Nos hemos preguntado si nuestros estudiantes, profesores o personal no docente de otras culturas, otra opción sexual o con una diversidad funcional pueden cumplir normalmente sus tareas o, por el contrario, sufren alguna clase de impedimento?

Hablar de diversidad es hablar de derechos humanos de primer orden, pero también es hablar de la realidad. De hecho, la UNESCO adoptó el marco legal de la diversidad cultural en noviembre del año 2001 a través de la Declaración Universal sobre Diversidad Cultural, cuyo artículo 4 afirma que la defensa de la diversidad es un imperativo ético, inseparable de la dignidad de la persona, y se traduce en el compromiso de la defensa de derechos y libertades, cuyo alcance no debe limitarse. Sin embargo, puede darse la paradoja de que estos derechos sean vulnerados dentro de nuestras au-

las. Y lo digo porque he sido testigo en primera persona del sufrimiento de un estudiante LGTB que, siendo aceptado por sus padres, no lo fue en las aulas por sus propios compañeros. Por este motivo, es preciso educar también en la diversidad y calidad humana, y todas las personas que formamos la universidad debemos interiorizar y promover la inclusión de colectivos diferentes de una manera natural, para que puedan sentirse cómodos y orgullosos de ser como son o, al menos, no se sientan, en ningún caso, inferiores por ser diferentes.

Nuestra universidad está comprometida con la sociedad y no puede ser menos que inclusiva, lo que significa que además de impartir una docencia de calidad asume el compromiso de fomentar los valores éticos y democráticos. Verdaderamente, un progreso que no es humano no puede considerarse un verdadero progreso.

Sabemos que el respeto es el principio de la convivencia y de la paz y, desde la Universidad, solo se puede atender a la diversidad de una manera: predicando con el ejemplo. Convirtamos, pues, el ejemplo en nuestro primer modo de enseñanza y seamos una referencia en el enriquecimiento que proporciona la diversidad y el progreso y desarrollo humano.

The word ‘university’ is a noun of Latin origin that reflects the idea of universality, in other words the creation of one’s own universe. Over the course of time its meaning has been used to define any community considered in its collective aspect.

The word ‘diversity’, for its part, is a noun that makes reference to variety, plurality, difference, complexity, multiplicity, heterogeneity and disparity, which is not the same in objects and elements. Both words together speak to us of a different universe, complex and heterogeneous. And it is precisely this idea that underlies references to diversity in society and in the classroom.

Diversity has many faces, but the ones it shows us and that make up the reality of our classrooms can be identified, day by day, in functional, cultural, sexual, gender and age aspects.

The universe is rich and complex, and all the elements that form it carry out a function that contributes to the functioning of the whole. It’s unimaginable to judge or discriminate against any of them. In the same way, the University is made up of teachers, non-teachers and students who represent different ways of life, and each one of them plays a

necessary role in the functioning of the whole. Thus when we talk about diversity we mean that a human being must accept any difference, just like his own differences, and in no way stigmatize it or identify it as alien. And that everyone in the whole university community should be able to carry out their function in the same conditions as other people, without being judged, discriminated against or encountering obstacles for their intellectual development.

Have we asked ourselves if our students, professors, or non-teaching personnel – from other cultures or with other sexual options or with functional diversity– are able to carry out their tasks normally, or, on the contrary, do they suffer some kind of impediment?

To speak of diversity is to speak of human rights of the first order, but it is also to speak of reality. Indeed, UNESCO adopted the legal framework of cultural diversity in November of 2001 by means of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, whose Article 4 affirms that the defense of diversity is an ethical imperative, inseparable from the dignity of the person, and manifests itself in the commitment to defending rights and liberties, whose scope must not be limited. Nevertheless, and paradoxical-

ly, these same rights can be violated in our classrooms. And I say this because I have witnessed firsthand the suffering of an LGBT student who, while he was accepted by his parents, was not accepted by his own classmates. For this reason it is also necessary to educate about diversity and human quality, and all of us who work in the university should accept this and promote the inclusion of different groups in a natural way, so that they can feel comfortable and proud of being the way they are – or at least not feel, in any case, inferior just because they are different.

Our university is committed to society and cannot help but be inclusive, which means that, in addition to providing quality teaching, it accepts the commitment to promoting ethical and democratic values. Indeed, progress that is not humane cannot be considered true progress.

We know that respect is the beginning of coexistence and peace, and that from the University it is only possible to serve diversity one way: leading by example. So let us provide such example our primary way of teaching, and let us be a point of reference for enrichment, one that provides diversity and progress and human development.

Información no financiera y diversidad: ¿una oportunidad perdida?

El 24 de noviembre de 2017, con bastante retraso, se aprobó en España el Real Decreto Ley 18/2017 que incorpora a nuestro ordenamiento lo establecido por la Directiva 2014/95/UE sobre información no financiera y diversidad por parte de determinadas grandes empresas y grupos.

Esta noticia debería ser motivo de gran alegría, pues indica que tanto las políticas europeas como las nacionales se van encaminando a visibilizar las acciones realizadas por nuestras empresas para mejorar nuestro medio ambiente y para garantizar la igualdad de género y el respeto por los derechos humanos. Sin embargo, la excesiva flexibilidad que se da a las empresas para cumplir con esta nueva obligación, unida a la escasa concreción sobre la información a aportar por las sociedades mercantiles en sus memorias, hace temer que esta iniciativa no tenga el impacto deseado.

Si bien parece que el Estado ha querido únicamente ‘cubrir el expediente’ cumpliendo con la transposición requerida,

cabe esperar que las empresas voluntariamente asuman esta obligación de mínimos como una oportunidad para consolidar y visibilizar sus políticas sobre igualdad y fomento de la diversidad entre sus plantillas. La propia exposición de motivos de la nueva norma nos insta a integrar diversos marcos normativos nacionales e internacionales para conseguir este objetivo. Así, me gustaría remarcar iniciativas como el Pacto Mundial de las Naciones Unidas o los Principios Rectores sobre las empresas y los derechos humanos, que se desarrollan en el marco de las Naciones Unidas para “proteger, respetar y remediar”.

Las empresas en general, pero las pymes en particular, deberían tomar conciencia de la importancia de potenciar la diversidad en sus plantillas, no solo porque exista una norma que nos lo exija, sino porque asumen con ello una gran ventaja competitiva.

Una empresa inclusiva y abierta a la diferencia que gestione adecuadamente la diversidad tendrá la capacidad de ver

más allá de sus prejuicios, permitiéndole reclutar a los mejores candidatos.

Tener una fuerza de trabajo diversificada, además, contribuirá a la innovación en los equipos de trabajo, facilitando la adaptación al cambio.

Además, el desempeño social de una empresa va más allá del cumplimiento de determinados objetivos económicos a corto plazo. Ser socialmente responsable es mucho más que destinar una partida del presupuesto anual a acciones sociales o patrocinios, se refiere a integrar en el ADN empresarial aquellos principios que implican un desarrollo social a la vez que económico. Por ejemplo, en términos de diversidad, la capacidad de una empresa para tomar el factor humano en cuenta cuando se persiguen sus objetivos económicos.

Ya que el legislador no ha sabido aprovechar la oportunidad que se le brindaba con la transposición de la normativa europea, confiemos en la iniciativa y responsabilidad de las empresas para avanzar hacia una sociedad inclusiva donde todos podamos ser iguales en la diversidad.

On November 24, 2017, after considerable delay, Spain approved Royal Decree Law 18/2017, which incorporates into legislation the terms of Directive 2014/95/EU as regards disclosure of non-financial and diversity information by certain large undertakings and groups.

This news should cause great joy, because it indicates that both European and national policies are moving toward concrete actions by our companies to improve our environment and to guarantee gender equality and respect for human rights. Nevertheless the excessive flexibility that companies have to meet this new obligation –along with imprecision about the information that such companies must provide in their annual reports– raises concern that this new legislation will not have the desired impact.

While it appears that the State has sought to do as little as possible in complying with the required transposition, it is to be hoped that the

companies themselves will voluntarily assume this new minimum obligation as an opportunity to consolidate and make visible their policies on equality and in promoting diversity in their work forces. The explanatory preamble of the reasons for the new rule encourages us to integrate different national and international regulatory frameworks so as to achieve this aim.

Therefore I would like to mention initiatives like the United Nations Global Pact or the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which were developed in the UN to “protect, respect and remedy.”

Companies in general, but especially the small and medium-sized firms, should be made aware of the importance of promoting diversity in their work forces, not just because there is a law that demands this but because by doing so they achieve great competitive advantage.

es diversity will have the capacity to see beyond its prejudices and be able to recruit the best candidates. Having a diversified workforce will also contribute to innovation and facilitate adaptation to change.

In addition, a company’s social performance goes beyond complying with certain short-term economic goals.

Being socially responsible is much more than just assigning part of the annual budget to social actions or sponsorship. It involves integrating into the company DNA those principles that imply both social and economic development. For example, in terms of diversity, it is the capacity of a company to take into account the human factor when pursuing its economic goals.

Since the legislator didn’t take full advantage of the opportunity in drafting this European norm, let’s trust in the initiative and responsibility of the companies in moving toward an inclusive society where we can all be equal in our diversity.

Joan, Sofía, Carlo, Quim y Esther son cinco jóvenes que trabajan en un estudio de diseño de Barcelona. “A mí me gusta trabajar.

A veces pinto, a veces hago letras. Yo no sé qué es autismo. Algunas veces la gente me entiende y otras no”, cuenta Joan en un vídeo. En La Casa de Carlota, que así se llama el estudio, trabajan cinco personas con una creatividad especial. Son, además, personas con una discapacidad intelectual, pero destacan por su valía profesional.

Entre los clientes de La Casa de Carlota están el ayuntamiento de Barcelona, Nestlé o Mahou, que buscan una visión diferente para sus campañas. “Las personas con síndrome de Down mantienen esa visión que perdemos cuando dejamos de ser niños, sin condicionantes, directa y muy fresca”, explica Sergi Capell, uno de los socios. José María Batalla, el otro socio, cuenta en el vídeo (vídeo del día en la web the The Guardian) que se siente un “listo” porque La Casa de Carlota ha detectado una veta de creatividad por explotar. “Tienen una manera de ver el mundo, interpretar la creatividad e innovar que es muy difícil de encontrar”, insiste Capell.

Joan, Sofía, Carlo, Quim and Esther are five young people who work in a design studio Barcelona. “I like to work. Sometimes I paint and sometimes I do the lettering. I don’t know what autism is. Sometimes people understand me and other times they don’t,” says Joan on a video. At La Casa de Carlota, which is the name of the studio, five people work with special creativity. They are also people with intellectual disabilities, but they are outstanding for their professional value.

Among the clients of La Casa de Carlota are the Barcelona City Hall, Nestlé and Mahou, which are all looking for a different vision for their ad campaigns. “People with Down syndrome maintain that vision, which we lose when we cease to be children: it hasn’t been conditioned, it’s direct and very fresh,” explains Sergi Capell, one of the partners in the firm. José María Batalla, the other partner, says in the video (video of the day on the webpage of The Guardian) that he considers himself clever because La Casa de Carlota has discovered a lode of creativity that’s yet to be exploited. “They have a way of seeing the world, of interpreting creativity and of innovating that’s very hard to find,” Capell adds.

La Casa de Carlota ha integrado la diversidad con naturalidad. Es un ejemplo de buena práctica, pero queda trabajo por hacer. Pongamos un ejemplo del ámbito educativo: los alumnos con dislexia tienen una dificultad añadida al pasar las respuestas del examen tipo test a la plantilla. Por eso, la Unidad de Atención a la Diversidad de la Universidad Europea detectó que sus respuestas solían estar movidas una casilla hacia la derecha. La intervención de la unidad permitió que ahora los profesores comprueben que los alumnos disléxicos han dado la respuesta que querían. Como suelen presentar déficits de memoria a corto plazo, también intenta mejorar la planificación para que no tengan varios exámenes en un mismo día. “Planteamos medidas lo más inclusivas posible, que supongan una mejora para todos”, explica Sonia Escorial, responsable de la Unidad de Atención a la Diversidad, que ya atiende a 98 alumnos. La unidad también ofrece un plan de formación específico para los profesores.

La universidad ofrece el servicio de atención a la diversidad a demanda: el alumno se pone en contacto con la unidad y entrega su diagnóstico médico o neuropsicológico. Tras estudiar el caso, Escorial se reúne con los profesores para analizar metodología y sistemas de evaluación. Aunque ciertos trastornos estén estereotipados, cada alumno recibe una atención personalizada, porque cada situación depende de muchas variables. El objetivo es detectar posibles adaptaciones que garanticen una equidad de oportunidades sin otorgar una ventaja. Escorial pone un ejemplo: “Si yo a un alumno que necesita gafas se las quito para el examen, no sería justo”.

La Casa de Carlota y la Universidad Europea son ejemplos de buenas prácticas en diversidad, y por eso están reconocidas con el sello B Corp, un certificado para empresas con propósito de impacto positivo. “Buscamos que a través del sector privado se dé respuesta a los principales retos sociales y ambientales, e implicar a la empresa como agente de cambio”, explica Pablo Sánchez, de B Corp Spain. La revista Fortune ya recomendaba en 2015 seguir las pautas de B Corp como una de las claves para el éxito. “Los empleados que destacan quieren trabajar para empresas

An example, from the educational field: students with dyslexia have an added difficulty when it comes to putting the answers to a multiple-choice exam on the screen. For this reason, Universidad Europea’s Attention to Diversity Unit detected that their answers tended to be moved one box to the right of where they should be. The Unit made it possisble for professors to now check whether dyslectic students have given the answers that they really wanted to give. tention to Diversity Unit, which currently serves 98 students. The Unit also offers a specific training plan for the professors.

The University offers attention to diversity on demand: the student contacts the Unit and presents his or her medical or neuropsychological diagnosis. After studying each case, Escorial gets together with the professors to analyze methodology and systems of evaluation. Although certain disorders are stereotyped, each student receives personalized attention, because each situation depends on many variables. The aim is to detect possible adaptations that will guarantee equal opportunities for each student –though without conceding advantages. Escorial gives an example: “If there’s a student who needs glasses and I take them away for an exam, it wouldn’t be fair.”

La Casa de Carlota and Universidad Europea are examples of good practices in the area of diversity, which has earned them the B Corp seal, a certification for companies that seek to make a positive impact.

“Through the private sector, we’re looking for answers for the principal social and environmental challenges, and trying to get companies to be agents for change,” explains Pablo Sánchez, of B Corp Spain. In 2015 Fortune magazine recommended following the guidelines of B Corp as a key to success. “Great employees want to work

for companies that stand for more than just profit, so it will give you a leg up in the talent wars. And it’s likely to win you more of the kind of customers you want to keep too,” the magazine wrote.

Sánchez explains that a B Corp company must demonstrate considerable performance in social and environmental areas. This process begins with the company’s own governance and employment policies; continues by applying high standards of transparency; and ends by making a commitment to changing its statutes to make social responsibility one of its objectives.

There are three B Corp profiles: the startups, “born with the conviction that they meet a social and environmental need”; middle-sized and family companies “with a clear orientation toward a culture of sustainability,” such as the Veritas ecological supermarkets; and multinational companies like Danone España or Triodos, which have joined international firms such as the Change.org global platform, the Brazilian company Natura Cosméticos, the Argentine textile company Patagonia and the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream company. The initiative began in 2006 in the United States and there are now 50 B Corp companies in Spain, among them Laureate International Universities, the network that includes Universidad Europea, which received the B Corp MVP 2017 distinction.

Attention to diversity means a commitment to making the University more inclusive. Giuseppe Iandolo, a professor of Psychology at Universidad Europea, said that while deep autism generates incapacity, “autism that is diagnosed in time and stimulated creates a diversity that makes it easier for that person to become integrated in the world.” As José María Palomares, Director of Communication and Institutional Relations at Universidad Europea stresses, it’s about “generating positive impact for our community.” La Casa de Carlota demonstrates that an autistic person can contribute a kind of creativity that you won’t find anywhere else.

Hay tres perfiles B Corp: el de las startup “nacidas con el convencimiento de responder a una necesidad social y ambiental”; empresas medianas y familiares “con una clara orientación hacia una cultura de sostenibilidad”, como los supermercados ecológicos Veritas; y empresas multinacionales, como Danone España o Triodos, que se añaden a empresas internacionales como la plataforma global Change.org, la brasileña Natura Cosméticos, la textil argentina Patagonia o los helados Ben & Jerry's. La atención a la diversidad es una apuesta para que la universidad sea más inclusiva. Decía Giuseppe Iandolo, profesor de Psicología de la Universidad Europea, que mientras que un autismo profundo genera discapacidad, “un autismo diagnosticado a tiempo y estimulado crea una diversidad con la que te integras con más facilidad en el mundo”. Como resalta José María Palomares, director de Comunicación y Relaciones Institucionales de la Universidad Europea, se trata de “generar un impacto positivo para nuestra comunidad”. La Casa de Carlota demuestra que un autista puede aportar una creatividad que no encontrarás en otro sitio.

DANONE ESPAÑA

Triodos es el primer banco europeo en obtener el sello, y albergó en su sede central de Holanda la presentación europea de B Corp. Sonia Felipe, responsable de Comunicación del banco, explica que Triodos busca aunar su concepto de banca ética con el movimiento B Corp. Felipe destaca la “flexibilidad” para abordar un enfoque integral en el cumplimiento de los indicadores, lo que permite tener en cuenta el grado de desarrollo, tamaño y actividad de la empresa. Triodos, con más de 1.200 empleados, obtuvo el sello en 2015 y lo renovó en 2017. Está en el top ten global de empresas B Corp en la categoría de Buen Gobierno a largo plazo.

La división de lácteos de Danone en España obtuvo la certificación B Corp en 2017. Jean-Philippe Paré, director general de Danone Iberia, afronta el reto con “gran responsabilidad”. “Queremos ser un agente de cambio y contribuir a aportar soluciones a los grandes retos a los que se enfrenta nuestra sociedad, principalmente en materia de salud, bienestar y sostenibilidad”. Emmanuel Faber, CEO de Danone, ya ha anunciado el compromiso de la compañía de obtener la certificación B Corp como entidad global. En España, Danone da empleo a 2.000 trabajadores, tiene plantas de producción e instalaciones productivas en 9 Comunidades Autónomas y abastece diariamente a 40.000 comercios y más de 11 millones de consumidores.

Triodos is the first European bank to earn the seal, and its central headquarters in Holland was the scene for the European presentation of B Corp. Sonia Felipe, who is in charge of Communication for the bank, explains that Triodos seeks to unite its concept of an ethical bank with the B Corp movement. Felipe stresses the “flexibility” necessary to adopt an integral focus in complying with the indicators, which makes it possible to take into account the degree of development and the size and the activity of the company. Triodos, with more than 1,200 employees, earned the seal in 2015 and renewed it in 2017. It is in the global top 10 of B Corp companies in the category Long-term Good Governance.

The dairy products division of Danone in Spain earned the B Corp certification in 2017. Jean-Philippe Paré, Director General of Danone Iberia, is meeting this challenge with a sense of “great responsibility… We want to be an agent for change and help provide solutions to the big challenges that our society faces, mostly in the fields of health and wellbeing and sustainability,” he said. Emmanuel Faber, CEO of Danone, has announced the company’s commitment to obtaining B Corp certification as a global entity.

Why did you decide to study at Universidad Europea?

I met Inger Mørken at a university fair in Norway. When she presented the Global Degree in International Relations at Universidad Europea, with all the opportunities for exchange that it offers, I made my decision. Now I’m in my third year.

How would you define yourself?

I’m curious, passionate, restless, an activist, and I have a global mentality.

What are your expectations?

There are many exciting opportunities.

In 2018, I begin my exchange with Carleton University in Canada and in the fall I might move to London to study at the London School of Economics.

mundo globalizado y un tiempo en el que las cosas cambian tan rápido que quedan muchos fenómenos por descubrir. ¿Cómo te gustaría salir de la Universidad Europea?

Siempre curioso y con una perspectiva más global. ¿Por qué elegir la Universidad Europea?

Por muchas razones. Los métodos de enseñanza son geniales. Why did you decide to dedicate yourself to the world of teaching?

Teaching and research are intimately linked to the medical profession. Through teaching we can help better society, improve the health and quality of life of people.

Can you describe your experience at Universidad Europea?

It’s a very intense and very enriching experience. In the first place, it allows me to go on learning every day, from both the excellent professors and co-workers and from our students.

What positive aspects do you find in present-day education?

Without any doubt, a greater orientation toward employability. Today’s academic offer is extremely varied, and helps prepare students for those professions that are in greatest demand. It’s a kind of education based more on the experience of the student and on acquiring skills and competence.

Why would you recommend studying at Universidad Europea?

Because of its academic model and because the learning is based on knowledge, values and the development of professional skills and competence.

Because of the faculty, which has prestigious Spanish and international professionals with wide teaching, research and clinical experience. For all of this, students are constantly connected to the professional world.

What advice would you give students –like our ‘junior’ on the facing page– about taking on the future?

I would tell them to be brave and not reject any opportunity. The only thing that’s impossible is the thing that isn’t attempted. That they have confidence in themselves, that they aim high in what they do so as to build a better and fairer world.

La docencia y la investigación están íntimamente ligadas al ejercicio de la profesión médica. Mediante la enseñanza podemos contribuir a mejorar nuestra sociedad, la salud y la calidad de vida de las personas. ¿Cómo es tu experiencia en la Universidad Europea?

Es una experiencia muy intensa y muy enriquecedora. En primer lugar, me permite seguir aprendiendo todos los días.

Aprender tanto de los excelentes profesores y compañeros que hay en esta universidad como de nuestros estudiantes. ¿Qué aspectos positivos encuentras en la educación actual?

Sin duda, la mayor orientación hacia la empleabilidad. La oferta académica en la actualidad es muy variada y da cabida a la formación de aquellos perfiles profesionales más demandados por la sociedad. Es una educación más basada en la

experiencia del estudiante y en la adquisición de habilidades y competencias. ¿Por qué recomendarías estudiar en la Universidad Europea?

Por su modelo académico y el aprendizaje basado en conocimientos, valores y desarrollo de habilidades y competencias profesionales. Por el claustro, con profesionales de prestigio nacional e internacional, con amplia experiencia docente, investigadora y clínica. Así, los alumnos están en conexión con el mundo profesional de forma constante. ¿Qué mensaje darías a los estudiantes –como nuestro junior de la página de al lado– para afrontar el futuro?

Les diría que sean valientes y que no desaprovechen ninguna oportunidad. Lo único imposible es aquello que no se intenta. Que confíen en ellos mismos y que busquen la transcendencia de sus actuaciones para construir un mundo mejor y más justo.

Más de 783 millones de personas no tienen acceso a agua limpia y potable, según datos de Naciones Unidas. Cientos de mujeres y, sobre todo, niños se levantan cada día con la única misión de encontrar y transportar hasta su hogar ese líquido tan necesario para la vida. Y para ello, caminan hasta 6 kilómetros y hacen el mismo camino de vuelta con 20 litros sobre sus cabezas.

La falta del agua es la mayor de las pobrezas y afecta a 36 países en todo el mundo, según un informe de Unicef publicado en 2017. Y la vida en una tierra seca y árida no es fácil: los cultivos no crecen, los más jóvenes se convierten en porteadores en lugar de ir a la escuela y muchos mueren por las enfermedades que causa el agua contaminada. Cada día fallecen unos 1.000 niños.

el aumento de la temperatura y del nivel del mar, las crecientes inundaciones, las sequías, el deshielo así como los sistemas de saneamiento inadecuados.

La sed mata y pone en peligro el futuro de millones de personas que viven en estas regiones del planeta. El acceso a agua potable y a unos servicios de saneamiento adecuados es imprescindible para la salud y la vida. Por eso, la Asamblea de las Naciones Unidas reconoció en 2010 el derecho de todos los seres humanos a tener disponible una cantidad de agua suficiente para el uso doméstico y personal; que sea segura, asequible y accesible físicamente.

Diversos organismos trabajan para poder ofrecer una gota de esperanza a los países más afectados. Uno de ellos es la Fundación Cerro Verde, una organización privada sin ánimo de lucro dedicada a la cooperación y desarrollo de la región de Choluteca, en Honduras, principalmente. La Universidad Europea colabora con ellos desde 2013, lo que permite que desde entonces, cada verano, un grupo de estudiantes se desplace hasta el lugar y pueda poner en práctica sus conocimientos y llevar a cabo proyectos relacionados con el desarrollo sostenible de la comunidad.

La aldea de Cerro Verde y las de sus alrededores solían disponer de fuentes naturales de agua; sin embargo, una prolongada sequía ha dejado las fuentes de la zona sin una sola gota y a los 600 habitantes del pueblo sumidos en la más profunda pobreza.

Las familias viven en pequeñas casas edificadas por ellos mismos de forma muy rudimentaria y apenas existe actividad económica alguna, solo una pequeña muestra de agricultura y ganadería que subsiste con dificultades dada la falta de agua.

More than 783 million people do not have access to clean, drinkable water, according to data from the United Nations. Hundreds of women and, especially, children get up each day with the single mission of finding and bringing home some of that liquid so necessary for sustaining life. And to do this, they walk as far as six kilometers and then cover the same distance home with 20 liters of water on their head.

A lack of water is the greatest kind of poverty, affecting 36 countries all over the globe, according to a 2017 UNICEF report. And life in a dry, arid land isn’t easy: crops don’t grow, children become water carriers instead of going to school, and many of them die from diseases caused by contaminated water.

Each day some 1,000 children die.

This water deficit in many parts of the world occurs when demand far outstrips renewable and available supply. Some of the aggravating factors that affect the quality and quantity of water include rising temperatures and sea levels, increasing floods and droughts and polar ice melting as well as inadequate sanitation systems.

Thirst kills, and endangers the future of the millions of people who live in these areas. Access to drinking water and sanitation services is essential for health and life. For this reason, in 2010 the United Nations recognized the right of all human beings to have access to enough water for domestic and personal use, and that it be safe and accessible.

Different organizations work to offer a ray of hope to the countries most affected.

One of them is the Fundación Cerro Verde, a private, non-profit venture dedicated to cooperation and development, mostly in the Choluteca region of Honduras. Universidad Europea has been cooperating with it since 2013, thus making it possible for a group of students to travel there each summer to help put their knowledge to use and carry out projects supporting that community’s sustainable development.

The village of Cerro Verde and its surroundings used to have natural fountains, but a prolonged drought has left them completely dry, thus throwing the 600 inhabitants into extreme poverty. Families live in small houses they have erected in rudimentary fashion, and there is hardly any economic activity beside some livestock and subsistence farming, which survives with difficulty because of the lack of water.

It works to create new fountains in the village, establish a system to distribute drinking water, and make the people aware of the importance of installing a sanitation system that will keep surface and underground water from becoming contaminated.

But it’s not an easy task. The main problem is the lack of resources for carrying out technical studies, which means that they drill for water without knowing if they will find it. As María Olga Bernaldo, a professor of Civil Engineering at Universidad Europea puts it, “it’s very frustrating and there’s such a high percentage of failures that on more than one occasion we’ve considered quitting.” But the residents of the village, who live in extreme poverty, are what impels them to keep on trying.

María Eugenia Meiler, a student for a Master in Public Health at Universidad Europea, spent 20 days at Cerro Verde during the summer of 2017. Beside finishing her end-of-master project about the health problems that affect people, she was able to experience firsthand the moment when water gushed forth from the earth after drilling a well. “Being able to celebrate the arrival of water with the people in the village and share their excitement was an indescribable experience,” she says.

A similar cooperative project led to the creation of Auara, a manufacturer of mineral water that uses all its profits to create natural wells in countries where a lack of water is creating misery. “After seeing firsthand what it means to

Pobreza, miseria y fuentes secas La Fundación trata de mejorar las condiciones de vida y el entorno de Cerro Verde. Por eso trabajan para crear nuevos pozos en las aldeas, establecer una red de abastecimiento de agua potable y concienciar a la población de la importancia de implementar un sistema de saneamiento que evite la contaminación de las aguas subterráneas y superficiales.

Sin embargo, la tarea no es fácil. El principal impedimento es la falta de recursos para realizar estudios técnicos, lo que les obliga a perforar la tierra sin saber si encontrarán agua. Esto, como explica María Olga Bernaldo, profesora en Ingeniería Civil de la Universidad, “resulta muy frustrante y el porcentaje tan elevado de fallos nos ha hecho pensar en desistir en más de una ocasión”. Pero los habitantes de la aldea, que sobreviven en unas condiciones de extrema pobreza, son el motor que les empuja a seguir intentándolo.

A lo largo de 2017 llevaron a cabo once proyectos en siete países: desde Haití hasta Camboya, pasando por Etiopía o Uganda. Así, en los últimos 12 meses han ayudado a más de 7.000 personas con un millón de litros de agua potable.

“Por cada dos botellas que vendemos en España, estamos aportando al menos dos litros de agua en comunidades desfavorecidas”, añaden.

Su reto para 2020 es ayudar a más de 50.000 personas.

Otras grandes ONG como UNICEF consiguen llegar con su labor a 29,9 millones de personas a quienes se les facilita agua limpia para beber, cocinar y asearse cada día. “Los programas de Agua, Saneamiento e Higiene (WASH) de UNICEF ofrecen a millones de niños y niñas en todo el mundo la oportunidad de crecer sanos y felices. Elementos tan básicos como un grifo, una pastilla de jabón o una letrina previenen la diarrea (una de las principales causas de mortalidad infantil) y otras enfermedades, reducen la desnutrición, contribuyen a que los niños tengan un buen rendimiento en la escuela y ofrecen un entorno limpio y adecuado para el desarrollo de los más pequeños”, explica Blanca Carazo, responsable de Programas de UNICEF Comité Español.

Aumentar el acceso, la eficiencia y la reutilización del agua es clave para garantizar la disponibilidad de los servicios de agua y saneamiento. Se estima que el consumo aumentará en un 50% en los próximos años por el crecimiento poblacional, la demanda del sector agrícola, la industria y la energía. Pero para hacer frente a esta situación y erradicar la pobreza hídrica, resulta fundamental hacer una mejor gestión del agua disponible en el planeta.

Over the course of 2017 Auara carried out 11 projects in seven countries, from Haiti and Cambodia to Ethiopia and Uganda. The aim is to provide drinking water by means of drilling or storage systems. In this way, over the past 12 months they have helped more than 7,000 people with a million liters of drinking water. “For every two bottles of water we sell in Spain, we are providing at least two liters to disadvantaged communities,” they add. Their challenge is to help more than 50,000 people by the year 2020.

Other large NGOs, such as UNICEF, provide 29.9 million people with clean water every day for drinking, cooking and washing themselves. “The UNICEF programs called WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) offer millions of boys and girls all over the world the chance to grow up healthy and happy. Such basic elements as a water tap, a bar of soap or a latrine can prevent diarrhea (one of the main causes of infant mortality) and other diseases, reduce malnutrition, help children do well in school, and offer clean and adequate surroundings so that the youngest of them can develop,” says Blanca Carazo, who is in charge of the Spanish Committee for UNICEF Programs.

Increasing the access, efficiency and recycling of water is essential in guaranteeing future supplies and sanitation services. It’s estimated that in coming years water consumption will increase by 50% due to population growth, and greater demand by the agricultural, industrial and energy sectors. To meet this situation and eradicate water deficiency, it is essential to better manage the water that’s available on the planet.

Part of the process is the mechanism that seeks to find families for hairy companions (at least if you want to be accompanied by mammals). Que la vida es complicada lo sabemos casi todos. Que para algunos grupos es aún más complicada, también lo sabemos. Y como lo sabemos, es hora de actuar. Así lo ha hecho la ilicitana Ana Puertas, que ha planteado un proyecto tecnológico pensado para las personas con movilidad reducida. DisabledPark es una app móvil gratuita que ubica en el mapa las plazas de aparcamiento adaptadas en todo el mundo.

Además de localizarlas, la aplicación permite denunciar cuando las plazas están ocupadas por vehículos no autorizados. También permite añadir plazas nuevas a la base de datos posibilitando así una constante actualización de la información.

A la hora de montar un proyecto, ayuda mucho tener un plan B, un plan C y un manual con las cagadas que otros han cometido antes que tú. Es decir, conviene tener conocimientos y experiencia. Nadie sabe todo lo que hay que saber y, por eso, existen los maestros, los mentores y los expertos. Y de eso va Bridge for Billions, la app desarrollada por Pablo Sánchez Santaeufemia –es uno de los 30 seleccionados como Emprendedor Social Forbes 30 Under 30 en 2017. Bridge for Billions es una plataforma digital que ayuda a los emprendedores a penetrar fácilmente en los ecosistemas que dan cobijo al lanzamiento de empresas. «Es una herramienta online que ayuda a emprendedores en fases iniciales a estructurar, desarrollar y poner en marcha sus proyectos», explican en su sitio web. La idea está dirigida a esos emprendedores con menos recursos que, las cosas como son, son mayoría. Que el talento no deje de salir a flote por falta de oportunidades.

That’s what Ana Puertas, a native of Elche, has done. She’s presented a technological project intended for people with reduced mobility. DisabledPark is a free cell phone app that locates the parking places that have been adapted for these people –all over the world. Besides locating them, the app makes it possible to report when they are occupied by non-authorized vehicles. Antes de nada, me presentaré. Soy Drew Houston, fundé Dropbox, y una vez conté mi historia así: “Érase una vez que Dropbox nació con unos orígenes humildes en una estación de autobús de Boston. Aquel día olvidé un pendrive en casa, y todavía no sabemos si fue un golpe de suerte o el destino…”.

Aún me lo pregunto: ¿fue pura chiripa o el destino me tenía todo esto preparado? Creo que el destino es solo una forma de explicar lo inexplicable (que es todo), pero qué sé yo... Pongamos que existe un destino: supongo que entonces habrá un lugar donde esté escrito mi futuro. Un archivo en la nube asignado a Drew Houston, fundador de Dropbox, donde mi historia estaría escrita:

Hilaire, Hilaire c'est moi —Hilaire, Hilaire c’est moi Escribe / Writer

“Drew Houston nacerá en Acton, Massachusetts, en 1983. Empezará programando en BASIC. Estudiará en el MIT. quienes invité a contar su historia con Dropbox. Podéis verlas en la web. Julien M. contaba que pidió matrimonio a su novia creando una carpeta, y aclaraba que “ella dijo sí”. Muchos dicen guardar en Dropbox las fotos de su vida y las comparten con sus familiares que están lejos. Eso es bonito. Otros crean música en la distancia, cada instrumento desde un lugar. Luego alguien lo mezcla y lo agita en otro punto del globo, y sale una canción. También es bonito.

Pero mi testimonio preferido siempre fue el de Hilaire T. “Lo uso para comunicarme con mi planeta. Llegué hace 150 años y he tenido que esperar todos estos años, pero ahora tengo Dropbox”, decía Hilaire. Podéis comprobarlo. ¡Un extraterrestre! Me gusta pensar en él llegando a la Tierra en 1862. En estos casos las naves espaciales siempre aterrizan en Estados Unidos, pero yo creo que hay mucho mundo. Además, Hilaire firmaba como belga, así que me lo imagino recién aterrizado en Bruselas, buscando desesperadamente un teléfono para comunicarse con Alfa Centauri Bb, donde dejó esposa e hijo: Clothilde y Jerome.

Pienso en Hilaire desesperado, porque es imposible que un europeo de 1862 pudiera indicarle dónde encontrar un aparato aún desconocido, de modo que nuestro protagonista quedó varado en un planeta extraño, la Tierra. Tan desconcertado quedó que pasó los siguientes diez años vagando por Europa. No tenía nada mejor que hacer, pues todos sus esfuerzos estaban dedicados a regresar a su exoplaneta, así que insistía en balde hasta que allá por 1880, o quizá un poco antes, se topó con la gran noticia: “Llega el teléfono a Europa”. ¡Por fin podría pedirles que le sacaran de aquel aguacero interminable! ¡Pronto volvería a tumbarse a los ricos solecitos de Alfa Centauri!

Before beginning, let me introduce myself. I’m Drew Houston, I founded Dropbox, and I once told my story this way: “Once upon a time Dropbox had its humble beginnings in a Boston bus station when I forgot my USB stick at home.

We’re still unsure if it was fate or fluke…”

I still ask myself: was it a pure fluke or did fate prepare all this for me? I think fate is just a way of explaining the inexplicable (which includes everything), but then what do I know?... Let’s assume that fate exists: I suppose then that there must be a place where my future is decided. An archive in The Cloud assigned to Drew Houston, founder of Dropbox, where my story would be written: “Drew Houston will be born in Acton, Massachusetts, in 1983. He will begin programming in BASIC. He will study at MIT. That’s what it would say for a start. And later? Ah, I don’t know.

The fact is that I wrote this about luck and fate five years ago (“We’re still unsure if it was fate or fluke”) and since then fate or luck hasn’t treated me so badly. I wrote it to thank the 100 million users we had at the time, and asked them to tell about their experiences with Dropbox. You can read them on the Web. Julien M. said that he proposed marriage to his girlfriend by creating a folder and added that “she answered yes.” Many people say that they use Dropbox to store the most important photos in their life and share them with loved ones who are far away. That’s nice.

Others create music by long distance, a different instrument in each place. Then someone mixes it all together in another part of the world and a song comes out.

That’s also nice.

But my favorite contribution was always the one from Hilaire T. “I use it to communicate with my planet. I got here 150 years ago and I’ve had to wait all this time, but now I have Dropbox,” Hilaire said. You can check it out.

An extraterrestrial! I like to imagine him reaching Earth in 1862. In these cases, spaceships always land in the United States, but it’s a big world. Besides, Hilaire signed in as a Belgian, so I imagine him recently landed in Brussels, desperately looking for a telephone to call Alfa Centauri Bb, where he left his wife and son, Clothilde and Jerome.

“Yes, let’s see, I’d like to place a call to Alfa Centauri…”

“What?”

“A-l-f-a C-e-n-t-a-u-r-i B-b. It’s an exoplanet that orbits the Alfa Centauri B star, in the southern constellation of Centaurus. We have three suns there you know.”

It soon became clear that this contraption wasn’t any use in speaking with outer space and he fell into a deep depression. I always imagine Jacques Brel finding him crying and inconsolable in some dive in Brussels. Then I imagine that his story inspired Brel’s Ne me quitte pas, which we consider a song of lost love. It’s the interstellar lament of someone pleading not to be forgotten. Hilaire cried so loudly that Brel wrote the saddest love song ever: Ne me quitte pas Il faut oublier Tout peut s’oublier Qui s’enfuit déjà Oublier le temps Des malentendus et le temps perdu Brel passed away, as did Gagarin and Armstrong, and also Laika and the fruit fly and the monkeys that went into space. They even sent the Voyager with the sounds of Earth. But Hilaire could only think about the answer from that telephone operator:

Dropbox da a las personas el poder de comunicarse y la seguridad de que guardaremos lo que más aprecian. Somos el custodio de sus recuerdos, esfuerzos y deseos. ¿Cuánto importará que ardan los papeles o se descoloquen unos bits cuando todo esté también en otro lugar?

Me vienen estas ideas locas cuando me acuerdo de ti. En aquel autobús ambos entendimos que la suerte y el destino son lo mismo aunque no sepamos qué son. Aquel día algo hizo “clic”: Hilaire, tu historia me dio la idea que me hizo millonario, y mi idea sirvió para que tú lanzaras tu grito interestelar de auxilio. Ya vienen a buscarte.

Una vez dije a los empleados de Dropbox: “Debéis ser dignos de confianza, porque estamos manejando la información más valiosa para las personas”. Por ejemplo: ayudamos a que a Hilaire pase la espera revisando cómo Clothilde y Jerome han cambiado en estos 150 años.

También está fascinado por cómo es ahora su ciudad. “Antes todo eso era campo”, dice.

Me gusta pensar que ahora Hilaire es feliz. Y me gusta saber que nada está escrito y que Hilaire, Hilaire c'est moi.

I still haven’t told you that I once had a cup of coffee with Steve Jobs. I told Forbes magazine. Dropbox gives people the power to communicate and the security that we will take care of what they most appreciate. We are the custodians of their memories, efforts and desires. What does it matter if some papers burn, or some bits are misplaced, if everything is also stored somewhere else?

I get these crazy ideas when I remember you. On that bus we both realized that luck and fate are the same thing even though we don’t know what they are. That day something just clicked: Hilaire, your

story gave me the idea that made me a millionaire, and my idea made it possible for you to launch your interstellar cry for help. They’re coming to look for you.

I once told the Dropbox employees: “You should be worthy of confidence because we are handling the information that most matters to people.” For example: we’re helping Hilaire, during his wait, to see how Clothilde and Jerome have changed over the past 150 years. He’s also fascinated at how this is now his city.

“All of this used to be fields,” he says.

I like to think that Hilaire is happy now.

El libro nace del proyecto de fin de grado de Monge, y es un trabajo fotoetnográfico que registra crudamente la realidad de los barrios marginados de sociedades prósperas.

Be Social es el homenaje a 30 jóvenes emprendedores sociales, cuya lucha se centra en el ámbito social y medioambiental a través de proyectos innovadores y nuevos modelos económicos orientados al bien común y la justicia social. El libro recoge la apuesta de la Universidad Europea y de la International Youth Foundation por el emprendimiento social y por sus protagonistas, auténticos agentes del cambio.

Daniel Briggs, Rubén Monge

Over the course of two years, Briggs (professor of Criminology at Universidad Europea) and Monge (a student at Universidad Europea) interviewed some 50 drug addicts, neighbors, doctors and NGO workers in Valdemingómez (Madrid), the largest drug market in Spain. They found powerful stories, like that of Julia: homeless, pregnant, a drug addict and a fugitive from justice. The book, which grew out of Monge’s end-of-course project, is a photo-ethnographic work that powerfully portrays life in the deprived neighborhoods of prosperous societies.

Inés Plana debuta en la novela con esta historia que enfrenta a sus personajes con un pasado que vuelve.

El poeta chileno amó y lo contó en 20 poemas de amor y una canción desesperada, dirigido a Albertina Azócar y a Teresa Vázquez, entre otras. Ahí están también sus poemas a Josie Bliss, Maria Antonieta Hagenaar (Maruca) o Delia del Carril. El amor fue su gran fuente de inspiración, y Bohorques encuentra en la intensa relación entre el poeta y las mujeres material para un estudio sobre la imagen de la mujer en su obra. Bohorques, profesora del área de Ciencias Sociales en la Universidad Europea, ahonda en el imaginario femenino de Neruda y descubre un universo propio donde habita su particular imagen de la mujer, la poesía y el amor.

Éxito en la V Edición del Powerade Non Stop Madrid-Lisboa — Success in the fifth edition of the Powerade Non Stop Madrid-Lisbon

Gran balance de los dos estudiantes de CAFYD en esta prestigiosa prueba deportiva no apta para todo el mundo. Y van cinco ediciones del Powerade Non Stop Madrid–Lisboa. Se celebró a finales de septiembre y reunió a 750 ciclistas para cruzar en bicicleta la Península Ibérica en los más de 770 kilómetros que separan Madrid y Lisboa. Por parte de la Universidad Europea, los nombres propios de este desafío han sido Asier Carrera y Zdravko Stoyanov, de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte, inscritos en el equipo Grupo ImFine junto con otras dos estudiantes de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. El pasado 22 de septiembre partieron desde el Polideportivo de Navalcarbón de Las Rozas y lograron coronar Lisboa antes de las 55 horas establecidas como tope. En concreto, llegaron a la meta unos treinta minutos antes del cierre. Toda una hazaña completada a una velocidad media de 54 km/h. Pedaleando con brío y poniendo buena nota a la representación de la Universidad Europea.

Great success for the two CAFYD students in this prestigious sporting event that’s not apt for everyone. There have now been five editions of the Powerade Non Stop Madrid–Lisbon test. It was held at the end of September and brought together 750 cyclists to ride the 770 kilometers from Madrid to Lisbon. Representing Universidad Europea in this challenge were Asier Carrera and Zdravko Stoyanov, from the School of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, who were part of the Grupo ImFine team along with two other female students from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. They set off from the Polideportivo de Navalcarbón in Las Rozas on September 22 and crossed the finish line in Lisbon in 30 minutes under the 55 hours that were set as the limit.

They pedaled hard and represented Universidad Europea well.

Grabando el vídeo del grupo We The Lion — Shooting the video of the We The Lion group

¡Luces, cámara, acción! Estudiantes de la Universidad Europea de Madrid han sido recientemente los encargados de grabar el nuevo videoclip de la banda peruana de indie y folk We The Lion. Recordemos que el grupo musical puso en marcha un concurso en sus redes sociales dirigido a todos aquellos universitarios interesados en la realización y producción audiovisual de un vídeo para el conocido tema Found Love. Y sí, alumnos y alumnas del Doble Grado en Periodismo y Comunicación Audiovisual se llevaron la palma.

El rodaje se hizo durante tres semanas en Madrid y alrededores. Y tanto la productora como la banda han destacado la calidad de la producción, grabación, edición y postproducción de los estudiantes de la Universidad Europea. En este sentido, las propuestas presentadas por 15 estudiantes de 1º y 2º de carrera fueron lideradas desde

Voluntariado internacional — International voluntary work

Lo contábamos al principio del curso en la web de la Universidad Europea. Con el fin de fomentar la responsabilidad social con acciones concretas y eficaces, unos veinte estudiantes han disfrutado de una formación integral a través de microproyectos de cooperación internacional.

Madagascar, Colombia, Kenia, Honduras y Nicaragua han sido los destinos para llevar a cabo una experiencia, la del voluntariado internacional, tan enriquecedora como necesaria. ¿Cómo? Colaborando con las comunidades locales en diferentes proyectos vinculados con la salud, la educación, el medioambiente, la comunicación, el deporte, la ingeniería, el desarrollo sostenible e incluso la arquitectura.

Dentro del Observatorio de la Cooperación Universitaria al Desarrollo, liderado por la CRUE en colaboración con Santander Universidades, desde el año 2012 cerca de 200 estudiantes y profesores han participado activamente en once iniciati-

Europea Media TV por el profesor Javier Pérez Sánchez. Corría la mitad del pasado noviembre cuando Jorge López, uno de los premiados, agradecía a la Universidad los medios y recursos disponibles y señalaba que este reconocimiento es “una gran motivación para llevar a cabo más proyectos relacionados con el ámbito audiovisual”.

Otra de las ganadoras, Beatriz del Pozo, se sentía afortunada por “estar en grupo maravilloso con gente que no conocía y de la que he aprendido muchísimo”. Sí, así, en un ambiente tan académico y creativo, los artistas de We The Lion celebraban el aniversario de su primer disco.

Un voluntariado internacional que les ha dejado huella y que ha servido para descubrir de primera mano otras realidades y poder trabajar a pie de campo aportando soluciones a distintos problemas. Como afirmaba el padre de uno de los chavales de un colegio de Nicaragua donde estuvieron los voluntarios, “esta ayuda debe ser el comienzo para que mejore la gestión de la escuela”. Sin duda, como en cada microproyecto de cooperación, es el comienzo de un esfuerzo constante, altruista e imprescindible para mejorar la sociedad.

in the Double Degree in Journalism and Audiovisual Communication were the winners. Shooting took place over three weeks in Madrid and surrounding areas. And both the production company and the band have stressed the quality of the production, recording, editing and post-production in this work by students from Universidad Europea. In this sense, the proposals presented by 15 first and second-year students were led from Europea Media TV by professor Javier Pérez Sánchez. It was in the middle of last November when Jorge López, one of the winners, thanked Universidad Europea for the means and resources it made available, and noted that this recognition is “an important motivation for carrying out more projects in the audiovisual field.” Another of the winners, Beatriz del Pozo, felt fortunate “to be in a wonderful group of people that I didn’t know and from whom I have learned a great deal.” And that is how, in this very creative and academic setting, the artists of We The Lion celebrated the birthday of their first record.

the places where they engaged in volunteer work, something as enriching as it is necessary. How? By cooperating with local communities on different projects involving health, education, the environment, communications, sports, engineering, sustainable development and even architecture.

As part of the Observatory of University Cooperation for Development –led by the CRUE in collaboration with Santander Universidades– since 2012 close to 200 university students and professors have actively participated in 11 solidarity projects. Thus during the 2016-17 course, several students did volunteer work. It’s an international experience that had a big influence on them, allowing them to discover firsthand new worlds and work in the field bringing solutions to different problems. Said one of the parents of the kids at a school in Nicaragua where the volunteers worked: “This work should be the beginning of improving the way the school is run.” And like each cooperative micro-project, it’s the start of a constant, altruistic and essential effort to improve society.

‘Ellos se merecen la suya’, la campaña para UNICEF — ‘They Deserve What’s Theirs’ campaign for UNICEF

El título ya es una declaración de principios, quizá un tanto enigmática hasta que se ve el vídeo. Las imágenes de Ellos se merecen la suya buscan sensibilizar y fomentar el bienestar de los más pequeños en la comunidad educativa. Se trata de un trabajo audiovisual creado por un grupo de estudiantes y Alumni de la Universidad Europea con motivo del Día Universal del Niño del pasado 20 de noviembre de 2017.

Se cumplían 63 años desde la aprobación por parte de las Naciones Unidas de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos del Niño y la Convención sobre los Derechos del Niño. Y este vídeo –Ellos se merecen la suya– era el resultado de la iniciativa Universidad Europea Día de la Infancia a favor de UNICEF organizada por la Universidad Europea. Un concurso para

diversos retos de innovación que eran respondidos por grupos multidiscliplinares de jóvenes les ofrecían proyectos trabajados durante 24 horas seguidas.

Casi nada, como se suele decir. Cabe destacar que el profesor del Área de Ciencias Sociales Bruno Broseta formó parte del Jurado y que el mejor proyecto tenía un premio consistente en 3.000€ y dos meses de incubación en la empresa que planteara el reto. Así, más de cien participantes se la jugaron en el 1er Hackathon de Innovación Valencia Business Challenge a principios de noviembre. Un éxito que retrata la proactividad e inquietudes de muchos estudiantes españoles. empleados y estudiantes que consistía en escribir un guion publicitario con el lema “Tú tuviste tu infancia, ellos se merecen la suya” y cuyos ganadores fueron Andrea Fernández González y David Estaragués Aguiñaga. “En el marco del espíritu Here for Good de Laureate, en la Universidad Europea consideramos a nuestros estudiantes agentes activos capaces de contribuir al progreso social”, señalaba el rector de la Universidad Europea, Juan Morote.

And behind this challenging wording, something important: one of the members of the winning team was Felipe de Murga, a student of International Relations and a graduate of the Global Bachelor’s Degree program of Universidad Europea de Valencia. This was the first edition of an event in which organizations and companies –such as Jeanologia, Logifruit, Nucleonova, Ribera Salud, the Association of Former Students of UPV and Chiquiemprende– presented different innovative challenges and where interdisciplinary groups of young people offered answers in projects they had worked on for 24 straight hours. A real accomplishment. It should be noted that Social Sciences professor Bruno Broseta was part of the jury and that the best project earned a prize of 3,000 euros, and a two-month incubation period for the project with the company that made the challenge. There were more than 100 competitors in this first Valencia Business Challenge Innovation Hackathon, held at the start of November. It was a success that attests to the proactivity and concerns of many Spanish students.

It was a contest for employees and students that consisted of writing a script with the theme “You had your childhood, they deserve theirs”, and the winners were Andrea Fernández González and David Estaragués Aguiñaga. “In the framework of Laureate’s Here for Good spirit, we at Universidad Europea consider our students to be active agents capable of contributing to social progress,” said the Dean of Universidad Europea, Juan Morote. Compromiso con la diversidad — Commitment to diversity

¿Conoces bien la Fiesta de Clubes o aún no? La cita pretende mostrar las asociaciones, círculos y grupos de estudiantes, así como sus especializaciones y temáticas, entre los recién llegados a la Universidad Europea. El campus de Villaviciosa de Odón acogía esta convocatoria el pasado 20 de septiembre de 2017 con el mensaje #WelcomeUE17 y la vocación de intercambiar experiencias e información, además de promover una sociedad más inclusiva. Así lo hace el llamado IncluClub, círculo de estudiantes que defiende el respeto y aprecio por la diversidad, rompiendo los estigmas, ayudando a la comunidad universitaria a sentirse precisamen-

te como una comunidad que favorezca el desarrollo personal y el impacto positivo a su alrededor. IncluClub sumó más de cien estudiantes interesados en participar en sus actividades y muchos asistentes plasmaron en unas pizarras reflexiones de tolerancia y convivencia: “La unión hace la fuerza”, “respeto”, “mismas oportunidades”, “todos somos uno”, “no juzgar” o “respetar la diferencia”. Un gran encuentro y un ejemplar club de la diversidad.

That’s the aim of IncluClub, a group of students who promote respect and appreciation for diversity, overcoming stigmas and helping those in the university community feel just that: a community that favors personal development and the positive impact of its surroundings. IncluClub has more than 100 students interested in participating in its activities, and many of those in attendance reflected about tolerance and living together: “Strength in union,” “Respect,” “The same opportunities,” “We’re all one,” “Don’t judge,” “Respect the difference.” A great encounter and an exemplary club for diversity.

Acelerando para implementar el ABP — Accelerating to implement the ABP Mes de octubre. Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Varios estudiantes de primer grado de las asignaturas de Comunicación Publicitaria y Fundamentos de la Arquitectura participaron en la –apuntadlo para no perderos otras– semana de aceleración sobre internacionalización, organizada por Mentor Day bajo la batuta del profesor Enrique Carrasco. Esta enseñanza forma parte del ABP o Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos y, en este caso, tenía como finalidad que los asistentes aprendieran qué es un Pitching. Sí, se refiere a un discurso de expresión oral que pretende promocionar una idea de emprendimiento a un foro de inversores o empresarios y saber cómo trans-

formarlo en un instrumento útil en el marco de la asignatura Habilidades Comunicativas. ¿Parece sencillo? Ahora ya lo saben bien, seguro. Igual que quienes, desde otras especialidades de la Universidad Europea, han participado en las siguientes semanas de aceleración para dotarse de más conocimientos, esta vez, sobre temas relacionados con Mujeres Emprendedoras y Proyectos Enogastronómicos. Sound simple? Now you know just what it is, for sure. In much the same way students from other specialties at Universidad Europea have taken part in other acceleration weeks so as to acquire more knowledge, in this case about subjects related to Enterprising Women and Enogastronomic Projects. That’s the way it is with ABP, an effective teaching method for the 21st century.

En el World Football Summit — At the World Football Summit

Congrega a más de dos mil profesionales y expertos del fútbol y es todo un referente mundial entre los eventos deportivos. El World Football Summit se celebró en el Teatro Goya de Madrid a finales del mes de octubre y allí estuvieron los alumnos de los programas de Máster en Marketing Deportivo y Sports Marketing. Un divertido aprendizaje gracias a las diversas ponencias, que escudriñan la industria balompédica desde todos los puntos de vista, y a la treintena de expositores del recinto donde se respiraba fútbol a sol y sombra. ¿Cómo se ha gestado el proyecto de construcción del nuevo estadio Wanda Metropolitano? ¿Cuál es el futuro de la Liga de Fútbol Profesional? Personalidades como

Miguel Ángel Gil, director general del Atlético de Madrid, o el presidente de la LFP, Javier Tebas, acudieron al encuentro. speakers, who scrutinized the football industry from every angle, and the 30some exhibitors in the theater, where those in attendance lived and breathed this sport. How did the new Wanda Metropolitano soccer stadium in Madrid come to be built? What is the future of Spain’s Professional Football League?

Figures like Miguel Ángel Gil, the director general of the Atlético de Madrid side, or the president of the League, Javier Tebas, were present at this gathering. A unique experience and a great opportunity for Universidad Europea students to practice networking: they’ll now be able to maneuver better after having acquired a greater knowledge of the sector’s details and strategic challenges.

Técnica, táctica y canastas en Canadá — Technique, tactics and baskets in Canada

Es Alumni del Doble Grado en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte y Educación Primaria y ha vivido una experiencia inolvidable. “La Universidad Europea me dio la oportunidad de dar el salto al baloncesto norteamericano”, confesaba Diego Hernández García tras disfrutar de una estancia internacional en Canadá para seguir sus estudios y ejercer como ayudante de entrenador en el baloncesto universitario. Entre las opciones fuera de nuestras fronteras que facilita la Universidad Europea, Diego Hernández eligió Canadá. Contactó con

Bishop's Gaiters, una de las grandes universidades del país norteamericano, y planteó su candidatura como estudiante y también para realizar sus prácticas durante el curso académico 2016-2017.

Como tareas principales, el Alumni se ha encargado de mejorar la técnica y la táctica individual de los jugadores, además de promover la psicología aplicada al baloncesto. No descarta volver. Sin duda, ha sido un gran aprendizaje y todavía queda mucho partido.

He’s a graduate of two programs –the Double Degree in the Science of Physical Activity and Sports and Primary Education– and he’s just had an extraordinary experience. “Universidad Europea gave

me the chance to make the jump to basketball in North America,” said Diego Hernández García after enjoying a stay in Canada to continue his studies and work as an assistant coach in university basketball. Among the overseas options offered by Universidad Europea, Diego Hernández chose Bishop’s University, one of Canada’s largest, where he would study and also carry out his university practice chores with the Bishop’s Gaiters, the school’s basketball team, during the 201617 school year. Among his main aims was improving the individual technique and tactics of the players, in addition to applying sports psychology. He may even go back. It’s obviously been a great learning experience and the game’s not over yet.
