Welcome to the conferring of degrees for the Class of 2025 graduates of Valparaiso University.
Today, we come together to celebrate the achievements of our graduates and to wish them well as they embark on the next chapter of their journey. But their connection to Valpo does not end here — on the contrary, we hope it is only just beginning. This University will always be a place they can call home — a place where memories were made, values were

Instead, we offer our prayers and blessings for the future and look forward to a lifetime of continued connection and meaningful engagement with our Valpo family.

ABOUT VA LPARAISO UNIVERSITY
This guiding motto reflects the core values of Valparaiso University: scholarship, freedom, faith, and service. Rooted in the University’s Lutheran tradition, these ideals shape the mission and character of Valpo today.
Valpo's origins trace back to 1859, when it was founded by Methodists as the Valparaiso Male and Female College — an early pioneer in co-education. For nearly 30 years, it operated as the Northern Indiana Normal School under the leadership of visionary educator Henry Baker Brown, before officially becoming Valparaiso University. Following decades of growth, the University faced significant financial
challenges during World War I. In 1925, the Lutheran University Association — comprised of clergy and laity — acquired the institution, marking the beginning of Valpo’s modern era as an independent Lutheran University.
Today, Valparaiso University spans nearly 300 acres and continues to foster a lifelong commitment in its students to seek truth, pursue knowledge, and grow in wisdom. An engaged and accomplished community of faculty and staff empowers graduates to ignite their passions and live out their purpose in a world that needs their light.
VALPARAISO UNIVERSITY ALMA MATER

2. Hail to the Brown and Gold! Recall the days of old, The happy days which we Ne’er shall forget. As shadows longer grow, Brighter the flame shall glow, The flame of love for you –Dear old Valpo.

ACADEMIC ATTIRE
On formal University occasions, faculty wear academic regalia with roots in the Middle Ages, when long gowns and hoods served both practical and symbolic purposes. As European universities developed, distinct styles of gowns and hoods came to represent academic rank and institutional affiliation.
In the United States, academic dress has been in use since colonial times. A standardized system, established in the late 19th century, remains in place today across most institutions.
The most distinctive feature of academic regalia is the hood, which reflects both the wearer’s degree and the institution that awarded it. Valparaiso University hoods are lined in brown and gold and trimmed with a color representing the field of study.
Here is a partial list of colors associated with the various disciplines:
Arts, Letters, Humanities

The academic cap, a later addition to academic dress, was originally a symbol of the master’s degree. Styles varied, but the square mortarboard — originating from Oxford — is now most common. The tassel, evolved from an earlier tuft, is typically black or a color representing the academic field; gold tassels are reserved for doctoral degree holders and institutional leaders.
Some Valparaiso University faculty wear regalia reflecting international or non-standard academic traditions. Cords worn over the left shoulder indicate honor society membership, while red, white, and blue cords honor U.S. military service.
SYMBOLS
Two prominent symbols in academic ceremonies are the mace and the presidential medallion. The mace, representing the University’s authority, is carried by the president’s marshal during the academic procession. It features four key emblems: the University seal, the chi rho (a symbol of Christ), the Luther rose (reflecting the University's Lutheran heritage), and the seal of the State of Indiana, along with smaller symbols representing academic disciplines and Christian virtues.
The presidential medallion, worn at official ceremonies, bears the University seal on one side and the inscription “Official President’s Medal” on the other. The president also wears a custom brown robe with four gold-trimmed velvet chevrons and panels, each embroidered with the University seal. The hood is lined in brown and gold, reflecting Valpo’s colors.
José D. Padilla, J.D.
PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY
José D. Padilla, J.D., was named the 19th president of Valparaiso University on December 2, 2020. A visionary leader with a deep commitment to faith, service, and education, President Padilla brings a wealth of experience ideally suited to guiding Valpo today and into the future.
A passionate advocate for service, President Padilla integrates faith and wisdom to help shape graduates who are not only well-educated but also spiritually grounded and communityminded leaders.
His appointment to Valpo follows a distinguished career in higher education. He previously served as vice president, university counsel, and secretary of the University of Colorado System, and spent 15 years in senior leadership roles at DePaul University, including vice president, general counsel, and secretary.
President Padilla began his career practicing law, later answering a call to public service. In Washington, D.C., he served as legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-TX) and as a senior political appointee in the Clinton administration.
Eric W. Johnson ’87, Ph.D.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Toledo and a juris doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.
His professional affiliations include the D.C. Bar Association, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and Campus Compact. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Missouri Valley Athletic Conference.
Recognized for his impact, he was named to Crain’s Chicago Business “Notable General Counsels” list in 2019 and was featured in Hispanic Business magazine’s “100 Influential Hispanics.” Negocios Now also named him among “Who Is Who in Hispanic Chicago” in 2016, 2017, and 2019.
Born on a U.S. Army base in Augsburg, Germany, President Padilla was raised in Toledo, Ohio. He met his wife, Hilda, at a fundraiser in Chicago; they married in 1986. Hilda is a real estate broker and entrepreneur. They have two adult children, Jacob and Camille. In his free time, President Padilla enjoys working out, writing, reading, fly fishing, watching historical films, and spending time with his dog, Coach.
PROVOST AND EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
Eric W. Johnson ’ 87, Ph.D., serves as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Valparaiso University. In this role, he is the University’s chief academic officer and also oversees Chapel of the Resurrection and church vocations, and the Christopher Center Library.
Provost Johnson joined Valpo’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1997. He has held the Paul and Cleo Brandt Professorship, chaired the department, and played a key role in establishing the Valparaiso University International Engineering Programs. His research focuses on nanodevice-
based electronic component modeling and engineering education pedagogy.
In 2013, he was appointed dean of the College of Engineering, where he led efforts to launch new programs in bioengineering and environmental engineering, emphasized holistic learning, and fostered an entrepreneurial mindset in students.
In May of 2021, Johnson was named provost after serving as interim provost since February of that year.
