SOCIOLOGY MAJOR

Valparaiso University’s sociology and criminology programs provide a wellrounded education combining liberal arts tradition with hands-on experience. Students gain expertise in social theory, research design, and social stratification, radiating their knowledge to analyze social issues in a rapidly evolving world.
STUDY ABROAD
Students can expand their global perspectives by studying in countries like Norway, Spain, Germany, England, China, and Costa Rica. Courses such as Criminal Justice in Norway and A Cultural Tour of Spain provide immersive international experiences.
INSIDE–OUT PRISON EXCHANGE
This course allows Valpo students to study alongside incarcerated individuals, fostering powerful discussions on crime, justice, and human behavior. It’s a transformative experience that helps students grow as beacons of empathy, insight, and change in their communities.
The sociology major is designed to provide students with a grounded understanding of social structures, cultural dynamics, and the ways in which societal influences shape human behavior. Through coursework and experiential learning, students develop critical thinking, research, and data analysis skills that prepare them to shine in careers in government, education, business, social services, and community organizations.
CRIMINOLOGY CONCENTRATION
The criminology concentration provides specialized training in criminological theory, criminal justice systems, and forensic research for students interested in criminal justice, law enforcement, and crime prevention. Students gain an understanding of the causes and consequences of crime, the effectiveness of the criminal justice system, and the role of rehabilitation and intervention programs.
