SPORTS DAY Hooray! For the first time in 7 years, Tower won the 23-24 T1 sports day! 6 impact houses respectfully competed against each other, having teachers actively participating in games and assisting the students. Students and staff went to the retreat center and played a variety of games including volleyball, rugby, capture the flag, and more. Although there was only one winner of this trimester’s sports day, every student and staff got to create stronger unity between each other.

For most of the years, Ark has been winning the sports day, and most people thought it would be the same this year. But however, unlike most people thought, Tower won, defying the odds.

Congratulations Tower for winning the sports day for the first time!

And we also thank God once more for letting us finish sports day safety.

Understanding the Israel-Palestine Conflict: A Week of Insight at Valor International Scholars Last week, students at Valor International Scholars delved into the complex and longstanding Israel-Palestine conflict during a dedicated week of understanding and reflection. Each morning, during the homeroom time, participants engaged in a series of educational activities aimed at shedding light on the historical background, complexities, and the quest for peace in this conflictridden region.

Day 1: A Historical Odyssey

Day 3: A Glimpse into Diplomacy

The week began with Dr. Young's comprehen= sive presentation, taking students on a historical journey through the Israel-Palestine conflict, tracing its roots back to 1917 with the Balfour Declaration and leading up to the tumultuous Second Intifada. The presentation also tackled critical questions about the Gaza Strip and the current situation on the ground. Dr. Young's nuanced approach explored the nature of Hamas, a group often labeled both as terrorists and freedom fighters by different parties involved. The presentation provided students with a well-rounded understanding of the conflict's historical evolution and its impact on the present.

The Model United Nations club took the reins on the third day, organizing a stimulating simulation of a United Nations Security Council debate. With participants taking on the roles of key stakeholders, including the USA, Israel, Palestine, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, the debate showcased diverse perspectives on the conflict. This exercise not only offered students insights into how international diplomacy functions but also highlighted the intricate web of interests and challenges that make finding a solution so elusive.

Day 2: A Prayer for Peace Recognising the human toll of the IsraelPalestine conflict, the second day of the week was dedicated to a solemn moment of reflection. Students and staff gathered to pray for peace in the region and for the protection of the populations affected by the ongoing conflict. This moment allowed the school community to express their collective hope for a peaceful resolution.

Day 4: Voices for Peace The week concluded with an opportunity for the Valor International Scholars School community to engage actively. Students and staff were invited to write prayer requests for peace. These heartfelt messages reinforced the desire for harmony and an end to the conflict, emphasizing the human aspect of the IsraelPalestine issue Valor International Scholars School's Understanding the Israel-Palestine Conflict" week was a commendable initiative that provided students with historical context, diverse perspectives, and a space to express their hopes for peace.

By tackling this complex issue through education, prayer, and diplomacy, the school aimed to contribute to a broader understanding of the conflict and the possibilities for a more peaceful future in the region. p2

OCT 2023 | VOL. 1 No. 2 Preparing for Ahnesong Marathon Starting from this year, middle school students are having morning programs, and one of the programs is running. Their final goal is to attend the Anseong Marathon happening on November 5th, 5km or 10km. All middle school students are trying their best, and challenging themselves to get forward. Even though it is hard for them to wake up in the early morning, and run 5km twice a week, they work hard with a positive mindset of running Here are some interviews for middle schoolers.

Hanjoo Choi 7th I think that I am getting healthier every time I run in the morning. It’s kind of challenging for me, however, the fact that I completed the 5 km track makes me feel refreshed, and happy and I feel proud of myself.

Jiho Lee 8th & Minseo Shin 6th Challenging myself is hard but I'm happy when I achieve my goal. Because we run in the morning it feels fresh and good. And I really feel happy when I break my previous record and have my new personal record.

Seohyun Park 7th While I run, my leg hurts so much that I want to just give up. But when I achieve my goal, I feel that I can do this better next time and I will gain confidence in running.

Triathlon team On September 26~30, 2023 during the Chuseok breaks, the Valor triathlon went on a Busan - Incheon cross-country cycling. Cycling from Busan to Incheon 633 km using only a bicycle was a challenge for them but they made it. Members who did this challenge were Mingi Shin, Jooyoung Kam, Michelle Yang, Seojin Lee, Dongyun Hwang, Minjin Shin Jiho Lee and Yuchan Park. Throughout this challenge, the Valor Triathlon team was able to donate 633,000won each to Philippines and Thailand mission sites. This donation will be used for development of mission sites and help for underprivileged neighbors in mission sites. Despite the challenging ride, they felt a sense of pride and had a great experience.

The Valor Triathlon members would also like to express their gratitude to Mr. Junghun, Mrs. Yuyeon, and Minseo, who provided significant assistance during their journey. The Valor Triathlon Team participated in the ChunCheon Marathon on October 29, 2023.

The ChunCheon Marathon is one of the three major marathons in Korea and is also known as the "Legend Of The Fall." Mingi Shin, Seojin Lee, Michelle Yang, Yeham Kim, and Minjin Shin, Jiho Lee participated in the 10km race, while Mr. Evans and the parents of the triathlon team participated in the full marathon, covering a distance of 42.195km. Congratulations to those who broke their own personal records, especially Mr. Evans and Minjin Shin. During last year's JTBC Marathon full course, Mr. Evans recorded a time of 4:28:16, but with his amazing effort over the past year, he achieved a new personal record of 3:52:23. Once again, great work by everyone!

On October 21st, Taerin Lee and several members of the triathlon team, including Michelle Yang, Seojin Lee, Dongyun Hwang, and Minseo Shin, participated in the 2023 Danyang Lake Park Water Sports Competition in the U18 water bike category. It was their first time trying water biking, and to their surprise, Seojin Lee won 1st place earning 200,000 won, while Dongyun Hwang came in 2nd earning 150,000 won. Congratulations to both of them on their achievements!

Bubbly Donation One of the several clubs in Valor called “VIS Bubbly” currently donated to the “Madagascar Anaraiba Church”!

VIS Bubbly is a passionate club where students run the school market Indy Bucks to fundraise for the needy. Since 2019, Bubbly has consistently donated to multiple charities like low income teenage girls, elders, refugees from forest fire, Hanuri Church, education for children in the Philippines and much more! As Bubbly is supporting many people in need.

Bubbly is also providing us with joy by running the school convenient store.

MUN is recruiting members VIMUN is recruiting members for MUN happening in this school year.

MUN, which stands for Model United Nation, where students get to have a chance to experience real World issues that United Nation discusses. Through participating in VIMUN you can gain writing, debating, public speaking, and researching skills that you can use even in your future. This would be a great opportunity for those who are willing to go on to future larger scaled MUN’s. The issue that VIMUN would be discussing will be humanities for middle schoolers, and medical (WHO) for high schoolers. Also, for those who are participating in VIMUN, Dr. Young is willing to give out extra credit for his classes ( AP Human Geo, World History, AP Research ). Participate in VIMUN! Public Health Club Blood Drive Donation The Public Health Club organized a Blood Drive Donation event on October 25th. The Red Cross Blood Mobile Bus parked in front of the main building, where students and staff began donating from 10 am to 3 pm. Blood donation is an act of love and a noble act of sharing life, in which a healthy person freely donates their blood to another person whose life is in danger due to a lack of blood, without any compensation. Donating blood is the only way to save the life of a patient in need of a blood transfusion.

Thank you to the students and staff who donated their blood. You are saving lives!

Medical Club Influenza Vaccination Session On October 18, 2023, Valor Medical Club conducted a flu vaccination project. They recruited students and teachers to get the flu vaccine, took them to the hospital, and helped them get the flu shot. Medical members played the role of nurses in hospitals. For example, handing out pre-examination tickets, lining up, disinfecting before receiving an injection, or assembling the injection.

They also decided to donate a portion of the cost of the flu vaccine to the Korea Children's Cancer Foundation. Through this flu project, the medical members had a good experience visiting the hospital.

VIS STUDENT LIFE

Student life aims to provide students with enjoyable experiences after school. The Student Life team organizes numerous events to make the lives of Valor students memorable.

Celebration Ramen night On the evening of October 19, 2023, at 7:00 PM, Ramen celebratory event took place at the Student Center. This event provided an opportunity for students to relax and enjoy Ramen noodles. Ramens were made by students and it was so delicious. Many students came and had a wonderful time.

Bon Fire night There was a bonfire night on October 24 evening.

Students gathered in the Empathy square and enjoyed marshmallows, hot chocolate, and Chicken kebabs. Students made unforgettable memories while eating delicious snacks and listening to good music in front of the bonfire.

There are many talented students at Valor, and each of us possesses a unique talent that we have been gifted by God. This page is dedicated to students who have achieved success with their talents, and we believe that everyone should know about it.

Jiho Lee, 8th Jiho Lee participated in the 11th National Club and Individual Fencing Championship in the middle school boys' épée category, held on 2023 October 21st. Despite it being his first fencing competition, he successfully completed four qualifying rounds and advanced to the round of 32. Unfortunately, he lost with a score of 10:15, but his performance was admirable.

Michelle Yang ,10th 10th grade, Michelle Yang participated in the 2023 Danyang Lake Park Water Sports Competition on October 21st and achieved excellent results. She competed in the SUP (Stand Up Paddle Boarding) and Water Bike events, where she secured 1st place, and earned a total of 850,000 won. Once again, congratulations to Michelle Yang for her outstanding performance.

Hyejeong Seo, 10th Hyejeong Seo won the U18 National Ice Hockey Title on October 21st. We're incredibly proud of her accomplishment and wish continued success on the national stage.

Yeongeun Lee, 9th Youngeun Lee participated in the 2023 1st Anseong City Taekwondo Championships and achieved 3rd place in the individual poomsae category and 1st place in the team poomsae category. Congratulations to Youngeun Lee, who worked hard to attain this achievement! p9

Can you introduce yourself?

I’m one of the first-year graduating seniors at Valor. I graduated from UC Berkeley 2 years ago and am currently pursuing my master's at POSTECH! Do you have any academic or personal advice for Valor students?

University is a place where you do need to develop a sense of self-directed learning, as it's a place where you'll often navigate things on your own. Experiencing this at Valor would be great. Also, building good relationships with people is quite important. After it's all said and done, you'll find that the memories you've created with people are what you'll remember the most.

How did Valor help you?

I was in the early stages of starting school, and the seniors were quite busy helping the teachers. During that time, I had to write college applications and handle various tasks as the student body president, which was quite challenging. Looking back now, I've learned how to manage my time effectively. These skills have proven to be incredibly valuable during my university years.

How was your university life going?

I met some amazing friends and became a part of a wonderful Christian community during my years at Berkeley. It was three years filled with happiness and self-discovery. I've also gained a better understanding of what I truly want to pursue and study. However, I was really saddened by the fact that I didn't get to have graduation photos and a proper graduation ceremony due to COVID. I hope to go back someday and capture those moments, making up for what I missed.

Memorable memories in Valor As I look back, all the times at Valor were memorable. From creating school rules to being part of the worship team, orchestra, dance parties, and senior trips, there are countless cherished memories. However, what stands out the most are the memories with the teachers I admired and loved the most. I miss Mr. Nathan and Ms. Daniel, who were there for me in both difficult and joyful times, more than anything.
