Then I heard her tell you to wait because she was coming too. And I’ll be damned if I’m staying here by myself with a $289,000 mortgage and no goddamn bike.

JUST FOR FUN A devout Arab Muslim entered a black cab in London. He curtly asked the cabbie to turn off the radio because as decreed by his religious teaching, he must not listen to music because in the time of the prophet there was no music, especially Western music which is the

music of the infidel. The cab driver politely switched off the radio, stopped the cab and opened the door. The Arab Muslim asked him, “What are you doing?” The cabbie answered, “In the time of the prophet there were no taxis, so piss off and wait for a camel..”

Notes from the Editor

Publisher - Ray Pappin

HAPPY NEW YEAR OTTAWA VALLEY & PONTIAC READERS

Nice mild December eh. Nice to have some snow for the holidays but not too much. All the best in 2015 for all my advertisers and readers. Thanks to all that sent in a little extra money over December telling me how much they appreciate the shit list. Not much response this year - only one payee, one whiner and one promise. Many readers would like the list in all the time and the debtors names LARGER but I only print it now and then usually around the end of the year but that may have to change if I don’t get some of the 2014 invoices paid up. The new changes in cost for display ads and classifieds was received well over December and the new ad form on page 20 is getting good use and we should be all set for 2015. Most business owners replied they understood. One said “Gotcha on the price increase, it’s understandable.” We had a skookum time at Finnigan’s Pembroke for the staff Christmas party, from L-R clockwise - Geoff, Dana, Dave, Garry, Barb, Joanne, Marcie, Andre, Marina, Ray, Mom, and Kaitlyn. The 7 that make sure you have something to read each and every month and their spouses. At this time of the year - the festive time it is good to be in the best company. It is with regret we bid farewell to Larry Nagora as he moves on to other expectations. Larry and I had a great time over the last few years and, like us, I’m sure all clients and readers wish him the very best. Now I wonder who, if anyone, will step up and try to fill his moccasins. Took some time for visiting and dining over December and here’s Jim Buske down at the rehab centre in Ottawa been there a long time but hoping to return in 2015 sometime. I do get a hankering for prime rib every now and agin - its almost as good as moose eh. Lets see who in Pembroke knows where they can have this any night of the week. Not to be outdone Doris out in Round Lake sent in this lemon-breasted turkey for those that are inventive and may want to provide a bird like none before over Christmas.

On a different note, and in closing for this issue, Nov and Dec saw me set my troth with Marina Duplessis of Pembroke as I was getting too solitary down here at the Muskrat Riviera. Don’t ask me why don’t ask me how anyone would want anything to do with an old bastard like me and a humble shack on the river. I’m not asking! So a lot of changes at the Vendor last month and looking forward to a progressive NEW YEAR 2015. That’s it for now folks. Get your ads in for February and remember always - keep it upright, between the ditches and always be good to your MOM. See ya’s in the Feb issue - ad copy with payment deadline Jan 27th eh! JUST FOR FUN A flat-chested young lady read an article in a magazine that stated Dr. Bumbutu in Africa could enlarge your breasts without surgery. So she decided to go to Dr. Bumbutu to see if he could help her. Dr. Bumbutu advised her, ‘Every day after your shower, rub your chest and say, ‘Scooby doobie doobies, I

want bigger boobies!’ She did this faithfully for several months, and to her utter amazement she grew a terrific D-cup rack! One morning she was running late, got on the bus, and in a panic realized she had forgotten her morning ritual. Frightened she might lose her lovely boobs if she didn’t recite the little rhyme, she

stood right there in the middle aisle of the bus closed her eyes and said, ‘Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies.’ A guy sitting nearby looked at her and asked ‘ Are you a patient of Dr Bumbutu’s?’ Yes I am. How did you know?’ He winked and whispered, ‘ Hickory dickory dock’...

PISTON BROKE MOTORCYCLES INK. 1984 VIRAGO

Consequences of Drinking and Driving; It’s a Choice Ontario leads the way in combating drinking and driving through some of the toughest laws in Canada. Individuals who drive while under suspension for a Criminal Code driving offence face stiff fines ranging from $5,000 to $50,000. We are serious about removing dangerous drivers from our roads. Those who choose to drive after drinking endanger themselves and everyone else. During the past decade, more than 2,000 lives have been lost and more than 50,000 people have sustained injuries in collisions involving a drinking driver. While Ontario has come a long way, impaired driving remains a serious problem: Every year about 17,000 drivers are convicted of Criminal Code offences (that’s right a criminal record charge) (including impaired driving, driving with a blood alcohol concentration of more than 0.08, criminal negligence causing bodily harm or death, manslaughter, dangerous driving and failure to remain at the scene of a collision). It is estimated that approximately three quarter of those convictions are related to drinking and driving; Impaired drivers are involved in thousands of traffic collisions every year; Drunk driving accounts for almost 25% of all fatalities on Ontario roads; About 17, 000 impaired driving incidents were reported by police in Ontario in 2005. In the same year, 174 people were killed and 3,852 were injured

in motor vehicle collisions involving a drinking driver. For the purposes of law enforcement, BAC, (Blood Alcohol Concentration) is used to define intoxication and provides a measure of impairment. The maximum legal BAC for fully licenced drivers in 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood (0.8). While some of you are trying to determine how much is enough to be safe or what you can get away with to drive. Why not just think strongly about the fact if you plan on drinking, plan NOT to drive. Make advance plans for travel after drinking with either a designated driver or just take a taxi. Our local taxi costs roughly $7 to $10 anywhere in Renfrew. I encourage people to plan before they party to take a cab home. You might have a relative or loving parents who would rather you call them 3:00 am to get home safely. Ask your doctor about side effects if you use prescription medication or get allergy shots; over the counter medications, including allergy and cold remedies and drugs and alcohol together can combine to impair your driving even more drastically. Remember, fatigue and stress will also affect your ability to drive. Drinking and driving hurts everyone through deaths, injuries and person tragedies. It also hurts our economy through added costs for health care emergency response and property damage. The

To place your ad in this paper, see page 20

financial cost to society of drinking and driving is estimated to be at least 3 billion dollars annually. Consequences for impaired driving are serious: you can lose your licence, be fined, or spend time in jail. Can you imagine not being able to drive 1 year, 3 years, 10 years or even possibly a life time with no ability to drive. You lose your freedom! So imagine trying to get to work in Renfrew County now with the additional fines and charges the law imposes. Try supporting you or your family now with a criminal record. Now with a DUI charge and criminal record how will your life be affected? As a licenced paralegal we are permitted to represent in Provincial Offences Court (traffic court) but not permitted to represent Drinking Under the Influence (DUI charges). I can refer you on to a lawyer but you can be sure it is a hefty retainer. You will be looking at additional costs that run in the thousands with lawyers and the courts, vehicle impoundment fees etc. Therefore, a $7 to $15 or more for taxi costs or calling your friend or family looks very minimal in retrospect. This article is dedicated to the person who was affected by a DUI the most. If you need help please do not hesitate to call I am sure our referring lawyers would be happy to assist you in the matter. 613-638-3256 JUST FOR FUN “Two Eagles” Indian Chief ‘Two Eagles’ was asked by a white government official, “You have observed the white man for 90 years. You’ve seen his wars and his technological advances. You’ve seen his progress, and the damage he’s done.” The Chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, “Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?” The Chief stared at the

government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. “When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.” Then the chief leaned back and smiled. “Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.”

JUST FOR FUN After both suffering from depression for a while, me and the wife were going to commit suicide yesterday. But strangely enough, once she killed herself, I started to feel a lot better. So I thought, “Screw it, soldier on!” I woke up this morning at 8, and could sense something was wrong. I got downstairs and found the wife face down on the kitchen floor, not breathing! I panicked. I didn’t know what to do. Then I remembered McDonald’s serves breakfast until 11:30. My missus packed my bags, and as I walked out the front door, she screamed, “I wish you a slow and painful death, you bastard!” “Oh,” I replied, “so now you want me to stay!” A government survey has shown that 91% of illegal immigrants come to this country so that they can see their own doctor. 24 • JANUARY 2015

Was pretty quiet overall because everyone was frozen solid eh. I had already burned 2.5 cord of wood over Nov - Dec and had to call for the oil truck! Did get some great power food from my friend from Nunavut - Caribou ribs, arctic char and some hand made slippers to keep the feet warm.

Started the Fest year off with Woodsmoke Bluegrass in Cornwall. All indoor just park your car in the lot Friday and come back to it Sunday. Its all inside at the NAV Centre a great facility, great event, fantastic entertainment, great food, inside bar and affordable rooms. You jut can’t ask for anything better. The very best off-season bluegrass event weekend to tide you over and get ya through to summer. Never complete without a trip out to Douglas to visit the McHales for St Patty’s. Here’s me and Terry. The cold weather was still hangin in tho. And the SABster turned the big 50 and jammed er up at the Lasso.

Nobby wasn’t with the cold and snow. Showcase in Petawawa - always lots of fun to attend the biggest and best trade show in the Valley and like the VV its free eh! My neighbour, Mark Parsons, was in hospital after his Harley left the road and later succumbed to his injuries and passed - R.I.P. bro. You are missed. End May we went to the earliest Bluegrass event of the summer in Quinte - hosted by Hard Ryde - what a blast. BBQ was a-smokin look them happy performers chawin down. I started off with Bike in The Bay - yep Raven, owner of Bad Kitty Tattoo in Gatineau was there posing with her pink Honda holding a copy of the VV. Next day it was up to Ladysmith for the NOB’s Vintage Motorcycle Club rally and swap meet. Next was The Gallop Canal Bluegrass Festival after a special invite to attend. What a great event and I walked away with $465 from the 50-50. Too many events to include many pics, but I’ll try to fit in as many as I can,: Calabogie Country Music Festival, SABSTOCK. And on the SS Sunday my cel rang and I lost a little piece of my heart to find my sister had passed. Then followed Valley Bluegrass, Log www.valleyvendor.biz

Jam Country Music Festival, Palmer Rapids Twin Music Festival and River Valley TWO. Well there’s the lineup folks - you decide. Something, somewhere, some weekend for everyone.

The Pembroke Hospital saw the NOB’s when we presented them with a cheque for the PRHF foundation. Things got a tad topsyturvey at Ranch Lake Motorsports in the lawn tractor races. Be there in 2015 when they have added a 2nd event at the end of August Grand Nat’l Mud Drags. It got a little more than wet at the Calabogie Blues n Ribfest this year but hardcore blues n ribbers endured for great music and eats. Our family was graced with the arrival of Augustino latest grand nephew. The Old Bastards Rally in Delta held at the Beverly Lake Campground is always the place to see your favourite vintage bikes. Showcase was prime this fall with 1000’s attending. The OVCMHOF show was great this year with the creme de la creme of Ottawa Valley nominees and great performances. Vic n Linda Garbut were beside themselves when nominated for all their efforts getting Valley Heritage radio up and running and their continuous efforts promoting local valley country music. The harvest opened for me on Sep 1 and closer to the end of the month got some venison for pepperettes and something to tide me over til the MOOSE. My old HS friend, Roman, made it up for a visit so that was the highlight for me for October. Mom & Marina were here for Thanksgiving - turkey, jambon, tortiere and ll the trimmings. Didn’t get out moosing on Oct 14 my partner still laying brick and stockpiling $$$ and hours before the hibernation sets in. Always better to hunt the “big fellas” when the “big buck” hunters are outta the bush. I hope you lads all did good with the deer. Nov 21,22,23 - Deerhurst resort for the Bluegrass awards like last year eh. Well that was my year, a great one for reflection on people, but a pretty good one - hope your’s was too. All the best in ‘15. 2014 Wrap-Up Great staff party, some super smoked sausage, some great prime rib, and finalized the ringthing, lost a sales manager. A lot happens at the end of the year eh. Now ya know why they say “Out with the old & In with the New”. JANUARY 2015 • 27

The value of an Independent Insurance Broker

Following the July 2013 floods in Toronto, some homeowners were faced with severely inadequate coverage, contractors abandoning the job and no assistance from their insurer. It’s a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of chasing the lowest advertised premium. Brokers provide value to their customers with good advice about the products and coverages they need, and support when they need it the most. You need insurance on your home. You know you need fire, you need theft and coverage for other damage and possibilities.

For whatever reason, we get caught up in this world of “What’s the cheapest insurance?” They brag about it on television, “Call Us! We’re $200 less. You’re going to save money!” It isn’t about that. It’s about making sure that you protect the memories. And pay for it right!

TIP TOP TOES

Hello, it’s Audrey the foot care nurse.... It’s December already, hello winter. Tis the holiday season, so instead of my regular helpful foot centered article I thought I would center this one on helpful Holiday gifts. I know every year it is a struggle to find meaningful gifts for Grandma and Grandpa. I worked in a long term facility for 15 years, so from a caregiver’s perspective here are some helpful and practical gifts. Diabetic socks, these beauties are wonderful for any person with diabetes or decreased circulation. Toiletries: toothpaste, deodorant, new toothbrushes, denture brushes, a nice hand and body lotion. Underwear and undershirts (remember G-Ma used to buy them for you every year), good supportive walking shoes with Velcro (no laces to trip over), a new electric razor. Handmade gifts always mean more to the recipient, young or old. Photos with the person’s name, age and date on them are great for bragging (or in a digital frame) A paid subscription to a favourite magazine or newspaper is always appreciated. Gift certificates for the hairdresser or barber. For the home-bound grandparent, give them a calendar with a year’s worth of visits scheduled out- dinners together, afternoon puzzle dates, BBQ and yard games, lunch or ice cream dates. Make sure to copy everything scheduled onto your personal calendar, so you don’t miss any plans. Ask every child, grandchild and great-grandchild to write a note, poem or picture of special things they remember about the grandparents. Tie it up in an envelope, or scan into the computer and make a small book on Shutterfly. A foot care gift certificate (hmmmn I know where you can buy these) So, whether you celebrate a Merry Christmas, a Happy Kwanza, A Wonderful Festivus, Happy Hanukah, a Druid Winter Solstice (including dancing naked under the moon), Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid’ul-Adha, Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucia Day, or Omisoka, whether you celebrate with the family you were born to or the one you chose, or with your cat, I wish you much peace, gratitude and most of all LOVE. Because in the immortal words of the poet Lennon “...love is all you need.”

To ensure your energy needs are met, it is important for the components of a system to work together. A brief introductions to system components are provided below. Loads At the beginning of the system design process, it is necessary to examine the various items that will require energy from the future system and to determine their total consumption. Understanding your energy consumption will be essential in designing a system of an appropriate size. Loads may include anything from lights and stereos to water pumps and microwave ovens. When exploring each of your loads, consider does it require AC or DC power? And, what is the total consumption of the item? For each load, multiply the watts consumed by the hours run per week (watt hours per week ). Find the total weekly energy required from the system by determining the sum of all of the weekly consumptions for the individual loads. Power Source (i.e. Solar Photovoltaic Panels, Wind Turbines, Fuel Generators, Etc.) The mix of power sources that is ideal for you will depend upon your needs, but also upon the resources available to you. Knowledge of the amount and intensity of wind and sunshine at your location will allow you determine the appropriate type and capacity of your ideal power source. At Glenergy, we generally design so that the daily production calculated is about 1.5 times the estimated daily consumption. In residential systems, we definitely recommend including a

fuel-fired generator to provide power when the batteries are depleted from an extended period without renewable energy availability. Energy Storage (Batteries) Most alternative energy systems require batteries to store energy. For the most part, lead acid deep cycle batteries provide the best price/performance among the batteries available on the market today. These batteries come in a number of varieties including: flooded, sealed, gel or Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM). Size really does matter! Batteries are the heart of the system so it is important to make sure that they are big enough. A “rule of thumb” is to provide rated capacity equal to a week’s consumption. In order to keep batteries in top condition, we design systems such that the batteries will not need to be brought below 50% of their capacity. Power conversion and distribution systems In the alternative energy world, it is often necessary to convert direct current (DC) from batteries into alternating current (AC) to run appliances. The tool used to achieve this conversion is called an

inverter. While some appliances require the very high quality AC power provided by sine wave inverters, many devices can function very well with less expensive square wave or modified sine-wave inverters. Less expensive inverters tend also to be less efficient and generally do not offer additional features such as automatic generator starting, load transfer or battery charging. In some cases, it is possible to meet energy needs without an inverter by switching smaller loads to DC. A 12V DC system, particularly for lighting, can help you to avoid the relative inefficiency or expense of an inverter. Charge controllers Charge controllers are used to manage the charging of batteries and, sometimes, the discharge of batteries by the loads. Charge controllers vary widely in effectiveness, options and price. Some models can manage both wind and solar charging. At Glenergy, we carry a number of different charge controllers to suit the diverse needs of our customers.

What better time to finish that project you been doing or get your present ride ready for the up coming spring, then the long cold months of winter. The Northern Old Bastards Vintage Motorcycle Clubs Christmas party on the 6th of December was a lot fun and the potluck feast prepared by all members was fit for a king . I got to hang -out with fun loving people , sang a couple of tunes , even picked up a few tips on how I should tackle building a custom seat for my 1978 KZ 650 that I have restored to look like a Euro-style “café ride “. BRIAN’$ CORNER

January… A time to reflect Christmas has come and gone, presents bought, exchanged and opened under the tree. Boxing day and the craziness on the stores has passed. Now it’s time to take stock on what is the plan in 2015. Are there high interest Credit Card balances carried over from Christmas 2014. Maybe it’s a good time to re-open your mortgage during these low interest rates? You could get rid of double digit interest rates and save money for better purposes. If you are in the same home for a few years there are usually some renovations needed such as newer windows, doors or major appliances. Maybe your mortgage is soon coming up for renewal? Why

not use the fact that you can re-write or transfer your mortgage to get a lower rate than your present Bank will offer or use the equity built up in your home to do those renovations you’ve been putting off. There are some great products to be had, for example: a fixed rate mortgage with a preferred rate Secured Line of Credit attached to it. You can get small personal loans from your Bank for home renovations but they are unsecured and have a much higher interest rate. If you are a young couple looking to buy your first home now is a good time to get pre-approved. This approves you as individuals and freezes (guarantees) your interest rate for anywhere from up to 90 to 120 days while you are out “house-hunting”. Whatever your needs don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and contact your local Mortgage Specialist and ask any and all questions. Remember there is no such thing as a bad question…..Questions? Comments? Contact me at: brian.coventry@ premieremortgage.ca

COUNTRY HAVEN RETIREMENT HOME Season’s Greetings, and best wishes for a happy Holiday Season from Country Haven Retirement Home, nestled in the heart of beautiful Beachburg! The staff and residents of our Home have had a terrific, busy November, and we anticipate more of the same for the month of December! On the morning of Thursday, November 6th, we had a very special Remembrance Day Service to commemorate the many Veterans who fought for our freedom. We were pleased to have the Colour Party from the Cobden Legion, Branch 550 in attendance, and our service was lead by Rev. Patricia Van Gelder, from the Presbyterian Church in Cobden. Laying the wreath was WWII Veteran and resident, Muriel Vizena. We are blessed to have several

WWII Veterans among us, and we are so very grateful for their services to our country. On Remembrance Day, and always, we pause to reflect...Lest We Forget. With the Christmas Season fast approaching, we have many exciting things planned! One of those upcoming events is our annual Christmas Craft & Bake Sale, scheduled for Saturday, December 6th, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, here at Country Haven. Our staff members, family members, friends and volunteers all donate their time and talent, and amongst them, provide and amazing assortment of baked goods and crafts for your shopping pleasure! From pies, to cookies and cakes, pickles, jams and jellies, as well as homemade chilli, buns and baked beans, there is something for everyone! We also have a wonderful

selection of crafts to peruse, and one of our volunteer craft groups, Molly’s Gang (famous for their adorable dogs made of wool) will have a table as well. We look forward to seeing you all there! Christmas is slowly being brought to life here at Country Haven, as we begin to “deck the halls”, in anticipation of all the fun and fellowship we will have; as always, our Home will come alive with the tastes, sights and smells of Christmas! It is a very

special time of year for us, as we enjoy the many carollers, visitors (especially St. Nick himself!), goodies and friends that all make the Holiday Season so special. On behalf of all of the Residents, Staff and Management at Country Haven, we leave you with this message: May the special gifts of Christmas, LOVE, JOY & PEACE, fill your heart and your home this Christmas Season and remain with you throughout the coming year. Have a very Merry Christmas!
