Notes from the Editor

Publisher - Ray Pappin

One More Frosty Month Left - Check the Event List and GET READY

Well January wasn’t too tuff eh. I see we still have a few chilly nights ahead right about the time you may be reading this.

Hey where’s the beef? Corned that is - can’t find any anywhere’s so had to grab a sweet pickled roll - stay inside and get the roaster on the airtight. Not many pics over January but did get down to town for my 60th and a Jacuzzi suite, Carleton Slots, Hobbit IMax, Tuckers Buffet (BD boys eat free), Costco etc. Ya know all the town visit stuff eh. Then grabbed a snack of sushi and headed for home and back to work get something for youse to read for Valentine’s.

Well I interviewed two prospective sales people over January one never responded after the interview and the other worked 2 days, reported in, and then disappeared and will not reply to emails nor phone calls - maybe he died eh - ya think? So if anyone wants the 500 business cards I ordered for him they are up for grabs - Just pretend you’re him oh - and steal/buy his cell phone. But seriously folks there must be someone out there that wants to work instead of just wanting to get paid for doing nothing. My sales for Feb from the office $10,600 commissions $3180 (10 sales) that’s $768 for Feb but five clients signed for several months and a few for a year. That is money every month for up to a year but you have to go the distance and stick around. All you have to to is add a few new clients each month and take real good care of them cause they are your bread and butter. So if you are the person for a long term job check out the website real good so you know all about the paper and email the office. Internet savvy and high work ethics. For chrisakes don’t waste my time like the last yo-yo’s eh. MIn commitment 1 - 2 years or don’t bother me.

Well that’s about it for this issue and my blathering away. So here’s a few pics of some events you might want to attend this spring summer fall. Till next issue keep er upright, between the ditches and be good to your Mom. To place your ad in this paper, see page 20

Why do people run over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it and then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance? Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that’s falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over?

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, then doesn’t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?

Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do, write to them? Why don’t they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen can look for them while they deliver the mail?

JUST FOR FUN A young banker decided to get his first tailor-made suit. As he tried it on, he reached down to put his hands in the pockets but to his surprise found none. He mentioned this to the tailor who asked him, “You’re a banker, right?” The young man answered, “Yes, I am.” “Well, whoever heard of a banker put his hand in his own pocket?” Hospitals report that the hearts of bankers are in strong demand by transplant patients, because they’ve never been used. Why don’t sharks attack bankers? Professional courtesy.

LAWS: 1.Law of Mechanical Repair - After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you’ll have to pee. 2.Law of Gravity - Any tool, nut, bolt, screw, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible place in the universe. 3.Law of Probability - The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act. 4.Law of Random Numbers - If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal; someone always answers. 5.Variation Law - If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now.

Random thoughts as we age .. The biggest lie I tell myself is . . .”I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it.” Old age is coming at a really bad time! Wouldn’t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for 10 minutes and come out wrinkle free and three sizes smaller?

6.Law of the Bath - When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone will ring.

Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven’t met yet!

7.Law of Close Encounters - The probability of meeting someone you know INCREASES dramatically when you are with someone you don’t want to be seen with.

I don’t trip over things, I do random gravity checks!

8.Law of the Result - When you try to prove to someone that a machine won’t work, IT WILL!!! 9.Law of Biomechanics - The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach. 10.Law of the Theater & Hockey Arena - At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle, always arrive last. They are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer, or the toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance or the game is over. The folks in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long gangly legs or big bellies and stay to the bitter end of the performance. The aisle people also are very surly folk. 11.The Coffee Law - As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold. 12.Murphy’s Law of Lockers - If there are only 2 people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers. 13.Law of Physical Surfaces - The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the carpet or rug. 14.Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible IF you don’t know what you are talking about. 15. Law of Physical Appearance - If the clothes fit, they’re ugly. 16.Law of Public Speaking -- A CLOSED MOUTH GATHERS NO FEET! 17.Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy - As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it OR the store will stop selling it! 18.Doctors’ Law - If you don’t feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor, by the time you get there, you’ll feel better. But don’t make an appointment and you’ll stay sick. 30 • FEBRUARY 2015

I don’t have grey hair. I have wisdom highlights - I’m just very wise My people skills are just fine. It’s my tolerance to idiots that needs work. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would’ve put them on my knees. I’m going to retire and live off of my savings. Not sure what I’ll do that second week. Even duct tape can’t fix stupid . . . but it can muffle the sound! Why do I have to press one for English when you’re just gonna transfer me to someone I can’t understand anyway? Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice. Oops! Did I roll my eyes out loud? At my age “Getting lucky” means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for. TIP TOP TOES

Hello, it’s Audrey the foot care nurse.....most of my telephone calls all start that. Today’s topic is a very serious one diabetic feet. Having diabetes puts you and your feet at risk for foot problems. It is important that everyone take care of their feet but imperative for diabetics. Blood carries nutrients and oxygen to your skin. Diabetes can cause poor circulation that can lead to dry skin, cracked heels, changes in nail growth, numbness and slow healing. Diabetes can cause decreased sensation therefore many will not be able to feel heat, cold pressure or any irritations to the skin. Regular exercise, walking and foot massages can stimulate circulation. Prevention is the key to healthy feet. Check your feet every day for blisters, ingrown nails, cuts, bruises, corns, calluses and signs of infection; also ensure you check between toes. I always suggest to my clients to buy a hand mirror and check your feet daily after your shower. Always wash your feet with a mild soap and not too hot of water. If you know what your feet look like prior to any problems you will be able to recognize when something is amiss. Avoid walking around barefoot or wearing toeless shoes. Cotton socks are best as they allow the material to breath. Shoes that are the proper fit with a wide toe are best. Skin that is well moisturized from the inside out is healthy and strong. Moisture is taken from the skin in the body’s effort to reduce blood sugar levels, it is important to use creams and lotions to slow the escape of moisture. It is also important to ensure adequate water intake is maintained!! Maintaining a healthy blood sugar level on a regular basis by following a healthy diet will also decrease diabetic damage to you feet. Stay healthy, happy and active and your feet will take you places!! And as always when in doubt see a foot care nurse like ME!!

JUST FOR FUN SEX AT 73. I just took a leaflet out of my mailbox, informing me that I can have sex at 73 I’m so happy, because I live at number 71. So it’s not too far to walk home afterwards. And it’s the same side of the street. I don’t even have to cross the road! Answering machine message, “I am not available right now, but thank you for caring enough to call. I am making some changes in my life. Please leave a message after the beep. If I do not return your call, you are one of the changes.” My wife and I had words, but I didn’t get to use mine.

The irony of life is that, by the time you’re old enough to know your way around, you’re not going anywhere. To ensure your energy needs are met, it is important for the components of a system to work together. A brief introductions to system components are provided below. Loads At the beginning of the system design process, it is necessary to examine the various items that will require energy from the future system and to determine their total consumption. Understanding your energy consumption will be essential in designing a system of an appropriate size. Loads may include anything from lights and stereos to water pumps and microwave ovens. When exploring each of your loads, consider does it require AC or DC power? And, what is the total consumption of the item? For each load, multiply the watts consumed by the hours run per week (watt hours per week ). Find the total weekly energy required from the system by determining the sum of all of the weekly consumptions for the individual loads. Power Source (i.e. Solar Photovoltaic Panels, Wind Turbines, Fuel Generators, Etc.) The mix of power sources that is ideal for you will depend upon your needs, but also upon the resources available to you. Knowledge of the amount and intensity of wind and sunshine at your location will allow you determine the appropriate type and capacity of your ideal power source. At Glenergy, we generally design so that the daily production calculated is about 1.5 times the estimated daily consumption. In residential systems, we definitely recommend including a

fuel-fired generator to provide power when the batteries are depleted from an extended period without renewable energy availability. Energy Storage (Batteries) Most alternative energy systems require batteries to store energy. For the most part, lead acid deep cycle batteries provide the best price/performance among the batteries available on the market today. These batteries come in a number of varieties including: flooded, sealed, gel or Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM). Size really does matter! Batteries are the heart of the system so it is important to make sure that they are big enough. A “rule of thumb” is to provide rated capacity equal to a week’s consumption. In order to keep batteries in top condition, we design systems such that the batteries will not need to be brought below 50% of their capacity. Power conversion and distribution systems In the alternative energy world, it is often necessary to convert direct current (DC) from batteries into alternating current (AC) to run appliances. The tool used to achieve this conversion is called an

inverter. While some appliances require the very high quality AC power provided by sine wave inverters, many devices can function very well with less expensive square wave or modified sine-wave inverters. Less expensive inverters tend also to be less efficient and generally do not offer additional features such as automatic generator starting, load transfer or battery charging. In some cases, it is possible to meet energy needs without an inverter by switching smaller loads to DC. A 12V DC system, particularly for lighting, can help you to avoid the relative inefficiency or expense of an inverter. Charge controllers Charge controllers are used to manage the charging of batteries and, sometimes, the discharge of batteries by the loads. Charge controllers vary widely in effectiveness, options and price. Some models can manage both wind and solar charging. At Glenergy, we carry a number of different charge controllers to suit the diverse needs of our customers.

BRIAN’$ CORNER

Buying your first home? Any time you purchase a home it can be a stressful and nerve racking experience. But maybe not quite as much if you make sure you deal with experienced professionals both in Real Estate and Mortgage Agents. They will guide you through the process and help take some of the pressure off. On the mortgage side, keep in mind if you go and get a pre-approval before shopping that document is more of an interest rate hold than an approval. Yes, you are pre-approved for a specific amount based on your income and credit record and ability to

service your personal and mortgage debt. But that pre-approval is subject to a number of things: subject to CHMC (Canada Mortgage and Housing or a similar Mortgage Insurance Company) approval if you have less than a 20% downpayment, subject to the property being a a good marketable property and worth the selling price, subject to you being able to prove your income and that you have sufficient funds for the down payment and the down payment isn’t borrowed funds. All the conditions on the Purchase and Sale Agreement and on the Mortgage Commitment have to be fulfilled 100% before you get the keys and title is transferred. For this reason the more experience you have at your disposal, the better your housebuying experience will be. Unlike your Bank, your Mortgage Agent will make time for you at your convenience and find you

the best deal as there is a whole array of Mortgage Lenders your agent can research to get you the best deal on interest rate and special options and added features. If you have questions about Land Transfer Tax or the Revenue Canada RRSP Home Buyer Plan this will be explained to you in detail and any other information you may need to assist in your buying experience. COUNTRY HAVEN RETIREMENT HOME Hello out there, from Country Haven Retirement Home, located in the village of Beachburg! Here at our Home, we passed a busy and enjoyable month- despite the deep freeze that we experienced in the Valley in the month of January! Fortunately, Groundhog Day is fast approaching, and our fingers are crossed that the little fella predicts an early spring for us! After all of the excitement of the Holidays, and putting Christmas to bed for another year, we had an enjoyable month here at Country Haven. We rang in the New Year in style, at a smashingly great New Year’s Eve Party to kick things off! The friendship and warmth that makes our Country Haven Family so special, filled the room, as we did the “count-down”, and partied our way into the

New Year! After a break for the Holidays, another event that we were looking forward to was our first Diner’s Club of 2015! Diner’s Club is a monthly fundraising dinner that we put on, with both residents and community members as our guests. The meal is always delicious, the entertainment is always fabulous, and the company is always superb! We had a completely full house in January, with 48 guests in attendance! Everyone who attends Diner’s Club leaves with a full belly, a warm heart and a smile! February is shaping up to be a lovely month for us here at Country Haven as well. Plans are underway for our annual Valentine’s Day Party, which is always a great deal of fun! Here at Country Haven, we take every excuse to get dressed up, and Valentine’s Day is no exception! Residents and staff alike, deck themselves

out in the finest of Valentine’s Day apparel for the day, as we gather together in the Hobby Room for a wonderful party! Our favourite band, “The Beachburg Connection”, accompanied by Tom, our Administrator, will be the entertainment for the afternoon; with this line-up, there is bound to be hands clapping, toes tapping, and a whole lot of dancing going on! From our Home to yours, we hope that you all have a wonderful month! Until next time...happy trails!
