The New Producers New York’s Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts Arrive in Puerto Vallarta

Teatro Vallarta recently announced the conclusion of licensing and testing procedures required by New York’s Metropolitan Opera and Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional, their countrywide concessionary, to broadcast the acclaimed Live in HD opera broadcasts from The Met in New York City, starting this winter season. For several years now, the Met has been broadcasting its Saturday opera matinees to select theaters and movie houses around the world, including other destinations in Mexico. The Met relies on decades of live broadcast experience, incorporating state-of-the-art high-definition cameras and audio equipment to provide audiences around the world an immersive experience that equals or even tops being center stage at the legendary New York concert hall. Therefore, venues that broadcast the series must adhere to stringent requirements regarding audio and projection quality to provide the audience the best high-definition surround-sound experience. The broadcasts themselves involve sophisticated direction, involving many high-definition cameras positioned at different angles and additional behind-the-scenes takes before, during and after the performances, as well as during intermission. Lead opera singers, conductors and stage designers are frequently interviewed, as well, to provide audiences with a more comprehensive experience of the opera being performed. Regardless of the language of the opera, all are subtitled in the language of the country in which they are screened, in our case, Spanish. Recently founded by four local residents, Puerto Vallarta’s new ACT II Entertainment (www.actiientertainment.com) promises to deliver five theatrical productions during the 2012-2013 season: two musicals, two comedies and one drama, all to be performed The Palm. The company’s focus is on giving the public a well-balanced theatrical season, striving for excellence in all aspects of production while drawing on and developing local talent to the maximum extent possible. Also launched this past summer, the Puerto Vallarta Men’s Chorus (www. pvmenschorus.org), under the artistic direction of local resident Bob Bruneau, will be performing a holiday concert at Teatro Vallarta in December, featuring a variety of Christmas and Hanukkah favorites in the tradition of many fine male choruses already established in large cities throughout the USA, Canada and the rest of the world. The recent relocation to their own space on a quiet street in El Pitillal has also allowed the Orquesta Escuela de Puerto Vallarta (www.facebook.com/ oepuertovallarta), the city’s youth orchestra under the direction of conductor Miguel Almaguer, the opportunity to spread its wings. Renowned for having given Teatro Vallarta its first fullhouse function when it first opened, the orchestra’s new and greatly improved facilities feature acoustically enhanced classrooms, a multimedia room where music students can further their musical development through audio and video performances, and a small stage where ongoing community performances and music lectures will be scheduled to complement their larger concerts at Teatro Vallarta.
